Beaches nearby

Hello.

I will be in the area in the beginning of December, in order to visit the Kennedy Space Center. I also think that I would like to visit the Merritt Island Nature Reserve.

I am interested in exploring a nice scenic pristine beach as well. I have read about Playalinda Beach, but USD$25 for a brief one-time visit seems excessive. Can anyone suggest other (equally nice) alternatives in the area that are free or less expensive?

I’m also considering going to Port Canaveral to see the cruise ships. Is that recommended? Is it easy to do, easy to get to and parking is not outrageously expensive (if at all)?

Thanks so much!’

If you’re visiting the Cape Canaveral area and want to enjoy scenic beaches without the $25 Playalinda fee, there are several excellent alternatives nearby that offer a more relaxed experience.

Beaches to consider:

  • Canaveral National Seashore (Parking at Titusville/Kennedy area): While Playalinda has a fee, other access points in Canaveral National Seashore are either free or have nominal parking fees. The area is known for its pristine sand, natural dunes, and less crowded atmosphere.
  • Jetty Park Beach (Port Canaveral): Located at the entrance to Port Canaveral, this beach is scenic, has picnic facilities, and a fishing pier. There’s a parking fee, typically under $10 for a day, but it’s much less than Playalinda and gives great views of the cruise ships.
  • Mandela State Park / Cocoa Beach Area: Cocoa Beach is popular but sections like the south end near the Minutemen Causeway or Patrick Air Force Base Beach are less crowded and free. You get classic Florida beach vibes, surfing, and plenty of space to relax.

Regarding Port Canaveral:

  • It’s definitely worth a visit if you enjoy watching cruise ships and maritime activity. The cruise terminals are easy to access, and the area has several spots for parking, often free or under $10 for short visits.
  • Jetty Park, as mentioned, is excellent for this purpose: you can park, walk along the pier, and watch cruise ships, cargo ships, and ferries depart. Facilities like restrooms and snack bars make it convenient.
  • Traffic can get a bit busy during cruise embarkation days, so planning your visit mid-morning or early afternoon is best.

Overall, if your goal is a scenic, less crowded beach experience with options to watch cruise ships without breaking the bank, Jetty Park and select sections of Cocoa Beach or Canaveral National Seashore are your best bets. Combining a beach visit with Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge makes for a full, nature-filled day without spending $25 at Playalinda.
