Mile numbers

? Are the first 2 numbers of an address the mile number? Trying to figure out mile numbers so I can map out all our stops the right way along the overseas highway. Thanks!

In the Florida Keys, the “mile markers” are a key way to navigate the Overseas Highway (US-1). They start at Mile 0 in Key West and increase as you head northeast toward the mainland. Addresses in the Keys do not always correspond directly to mile markers, but many businesses and residences include the nearest mile marker in their address for easier navigation.

Regarding your specific question about the first two numbers of an address being the mile number:

  • Not necessarily. Some addresses may include the mile marker as part of the street number, especially for properties on US-1, but this is not a strict rule.
  • It is more reliable to look at the mile marker signs along US-1. They are placed at every mile and are the standard reference for locations in the Keys.
  • When planning stops, you can use a combination of the official address and the nearest mile marker for more accurate mapping.

Tips for mapping out stops along the Overseas Highway:

  • Use a mile marker map of the Keys—many online resources and tourist maps show all the Key locations with corresponding mile markers.
  • When visiting attractions or restaurants, check their website or Google Maps; often they will list the mile marker in their description, making it easier to plan your drive.
  • Keep in mind that Mile 0 is in Key West, and as you drive northeast, the mile numbers increase sequentially toward Key Largo and the mainland.

In short, the first two digits of an address are not a guaranteed mile number, but mile markers along the highway are the reliable method for mapping stops. Using a combination of mile markers and addresses will give you the most accurate plan for your trip.
