Payment on public buses

Hello, I’ve read contactless payment on Portland buses but just to make sure if understood correctly: my normal bank credit/debit card can also be used or is it just the App that passengers can download onto their phone?

Yes, Portland’s public buses support multiple forms of contactless payment, and it is not limited to just a mobile app. You can use your regular bank-issued credit or debit card as long as it has contactless payment capability (tap-to-pay). This makes boarding simple and convenient without needing to download any app.

Here’s a breakdown of the available payment options:

  • Contactless bank cards: Most Visa, Mastercard, and American Express cards with tap-to-pay functionality are accepted directly at the fare reader on the bus.
  • Mobile wallets: You can use Apple Pay, Google Pay, or Samsung Pay, which allows you to tap your phone or smartwatch directly at the fare reader.
  • Transit apps: The local transit authority may offer an official app where you can load funds or purchase tickets in advance, though this is optional if you are using a contactless bank card.
  • Traditional cash and tickets: Cash is also accepted on most buses, though exact change may be required.

When using contactless payment:

  • Simply tap your card or device on the fare reader as you board.
  • The system automatically deducts the fare, and a small indicator light or sound will confirm payment.
  • No need to open an app unless you prefer to use stored value or digital passes.

Overall, using your normal bank card is perfectly fine and is often the easiest option for visitors. The app is only necessary if you want to pre-purchase rides, store passes, or manage account balances digitally.
