Never been
We are planning to visit Hawaii sometime next year. I have been to Maui and Oahu and now want to try the Big Island. Is Kona the best area. We would like recommendations for a resort that is on the beach. Thanks for your help!
The Big Island is an amazing choice for your next Hawaiian adventure, and Kailua-Kona is a popular destination on the western side of the island. It offers a mix of beautiful beaches, great snorkeling, historic sites, and a more relaxed vibe compared to Oahu or Maui. While Kona is certainly a great area to stay, there are other areas on the island you might consider depending on what you're looking for. Here's a breakdown of the different areas and some resort recommendations for you:
- Kailua-Kona:
Kona is a great base for exploring the island’s west coast. It has several oceanfront resorts and is close to many of the Big Island’s famous attractions, such as coffee farms, beaches, and historical sites like Pu'uhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park. Kona is known for its lively town center, where you can find shops, restaurants, and a laid-back atmosphere.
- Royal Kona Resort: This oceanfront resort in Kailua-Kona is a popular choice for its central location and beautiful views. It offers a variety of amenities including a pool, restaurants, and easy access to the ocean.
- Sheraton Kona Resort & Spa at Keauhou Bay: Located just south of Kailua-Kona, this resort is set on a stunning lava-rock coastline and offers excellent amenities, including a full-service spa and several oceanfront dining options. It’s great for snorkeling and watching sunsets.
- Four Seasons Resort Hualalai: If you’re looking for something more luxurious, the Four Seasons Resort Hualalai is one of the top resorts on the island. It offers beachfront access, multiple pools, and high-end dining options. It's perfect for a special getaway if you prefer a more upscale experience.
- Waikoloa:
Waikoloa is located to the north of Kailua-Kona and is home to several large, beautiful resorts. The area is known for its luxury properties, golf courses, and beautiful beaches. It tends to be a little more tranquil than Kailua-Kona, making it ideal for those who want a more relaxed stay.
- Waikoloa Beach Marriott Resort & Spa: This resort is located right on the beach and offers beautiful views, water activities, and a spa. It’s a great choice if you want a balance of relaxation and access to local attractions.
- Hilton Waikoloa Village: This sprawling resort is perfect for families and couples alike, with a variety of pools, restaurants, and direct beach access. It’s a larger resort with plenty of on-site activities, including a lagoon for kayaking and paddleboarding.
- South Kohala:
If you’re interested in more remote, pristine beaches, the South Kohala region (near the town of Waikoloa) offers luxurious resorts with direct beach access and is a great spot for relaxation. It’s quieter than Kona and offers beautiful scenery.
- The Fairmont Orchid: Located in the beautiful Mauna Lani area, The Fairmont Orchid offers a secluded beach experience with stunning views, spa services, and excellent dining. It’s perfect for a peaceful, luxurious escape.
- Mauna Kea Beach Hotel: Situated on one of the most beautiful beaches on the Big Island, Mauna Kea Beach Hotel offers exceptional beachfront access, stunning views, and a more tranquil, high-end resort experience.
Summary:
- If you want to stay close to the action and have easy access to shops and restaurants, Kailua-Kona is a great choice with oceanfront resorts like the Royal Kona Resort and Sheraton Kona Resort & Spa.
- If you’re looking for a more upscale, luxury experience, Four Seasons Resort Hualalai and Mauna Kea Beach Hotel are top choices with direct beachfront access and exceptional amenities.
- For a quieter, more tranquil stay, Waikoloa offers beautiful resorts like the Waikoloa Beach Marriott Resort & Spa and Hilton Waikoloa Village.
- For a secluded and serene getaway with luxury, South Kohala has properties like the The Fairmont Orchid and Mauna Kea Beach Hotel offering access to quiet, beautiful beaches.
Whichever area you choose, the Big Island offers an incredible variety of resorts to suit all tastes, from lively and convenient to tranquil and luxurious. Enjoy your trip!
