Question on Amap

Hi all,

I was wondering does the Amap shows our own position on the map as we walk around in the city, like Google Map does ? Would be helpful to know where we are on the map.

Thanks.

Amap, also known as Gaode Map, is one of the most widely used navigation apps in China, similar to Google Maps. It does show your real-time location on the map as you move, provided your device has GPS enabled and you grant the app location permissions.

Here are the main points regarding Amap's positioning features:

  • Real-time location: Amap continuously updates your position on the map as you walk, drive, or cycle.
  • Navigation: It provides turn-by-turn directions for walking, driving, and public transportation, showing your current location along the route.
  • Location sharing: You can share your real-time location with friends or family, similar to Google Maps’ location sharing feature.

To ensure accurate positioning, make sure your phone's GPS is on, location services are enabled for Amap, and the app has permission to access your location. Indoor positioning may be less accurate, especially inside large buildings or underground metro stations.

Additional features that can be useful when exploring Beijing:

  • Offline maps: You can download offline maps of Beijing to navigate without using mobile data.
  • Street view: Some areas offer street view, helping you recognize landmarks as you walk.
  • Public transit routes: Real-time bus and subway information is available, showing where you are relative to stations.

Overall, Amap functions very similarly to Google Maps for real-time walking and navigation in Chinese cities, including Beijing.
