A guide to paragliding without a power source – a must-do for your bucket list! Haining Dajianshan Paragliding Base offers practical tips.

Preface

"Life is made up of one regret after another. When you are finally about to face death, you will find that there are too many things worth trying in this life, but you have missed them mercilessly." This sentence from the movie "The Forgotten List" makes many people think about what they would most want to do if "tomorrow" comes soon. Therefore, many people have made "forgotten lists" or "life lists" to tell themselves to do what they want to do, become the person they want to be, make their lives meaningful, and leave fewer regrets in life.

I am one of the many people who make lists. "Snow mountain climbing, desert hiking, cave exploration, skydiving, live-fire shooting, snowboarding, deep diving, solo paragliding and small aircraft flying" are on my list of things I want to experience and learn in my spare time from work and life!

Fear comes from your ignorance of the matter. It is because of exploration that people have infinite possibilities - overcome fear and prejudice, and try things you have never done before!

About paragliding

The origins of paragliding

Paragliding originated in Europe in the early 1970s. French mountaineer Betten, who lived at the foot of the Alps, successfully descended from the Alps using a square parachute.

Since then, mountaineers have followed Betten's lead and have made further improvements to parachutes, combining the characteristics of parachutes with hang gliders to create paragliders that can take off from mountain slopes and soar freely in the air. It was not until 1984 that French mountaineer Philon successfully flew from Mont Blanc in the Alps that paragliding became famous.

Compared to skydiving, paragliding is a challenging, exciting, interesting and fashionable leisure outdoor sport. It is also the smallest and safest aircraft in the world.

Paraglider classification

/Paragliders can be divided into two categories according to the power method: non-powered paragliders and powered paragliders/

non-powered paraglider

Paragliding itself has no power, is calm and gentle, and has high requirements for weather conditions. The reason why it can fly is that in addition to the special shape of the canopy after it is filled with air (flying wings), it is entirely controlled by the pilot and combined with various characteristics of the atmosphere (aerodynamics) to fly.

Traditional parachutes can only generate downward resistance in the air, but no lift, while paragliders can generate speed and lift while flying in the air, and their speed and lift are far greater than their resistance.

The parachute rope is pulled with gentle force, without relying on any mechanical power. It is only through natural airflow and the cooperation between people and parachutes that one can fly freely in the sky and overlook the earth from a God's perspective.

powered paragliders

Powered paragliding originated in Europe in the 1970s and was introduced to my country in the late 1980s. It is mainly composed of two parts: a paraglider and an engine. There is a large fan on the back. There will be engine sound when flying, and the weather requirements are not high.

The term "paramotor" comes from the English words "paragliding" and "motor." As the name suggests, a paramotor is a paraglider equipped with a power unit. This power control ensures safer flight and a guaranteed flight duration. It can take off from flat ground and reach altitudes of 400 to 800 meters.

/Paragliding can be divided into two categories according to the playing method: recreational flying and competition flying/

leisure flying

The vast majority of paragliding enthusiasts around the world are engaged in recreational flying, enjoying the pleasure of flying in the air when the weather conditions are suitable for flying.

Competition flying

Competitive flying can be roughly divided into five forms: competition in landing accuracy - precision flying, competition in flight distance - cross-country flying, competition in flight speed - racing flying, competition in flight movements - aerobatics, and competition in the time spent in the air - hovering flight.

Precision flying has the largest number of participants and the most intense competition, as it is simple and easy to promote. Aerobatic flying has the least participants because it is difficult, requires various conditions, and is also very dangerous.

How to play paragliding

season

The areas around Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Shanghai have favorable conditions for paragliding activities, and as long as it does not rain, flying is possible all year round.

Generally speaking, visibility is highest during the monsoon season in July and August, and the scenery from above is breathtaking. September to May is also a good time for paragliding. The higher temperatures in September and October bring with them a surge of updrafts, allowing for higher altitudes.

time

The best time to fly a paraglider is between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. The sun warms the ground, creating enough updrafts for the paraglider to soar. If you want to soar the highest and fly the farthest, choose this time.

Secondly, between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. is also a good choice, where you can watch the evening scene.

Tips: Paragliding may vary depending on the region and terrain, please refer to local requirements.

Those who pass the professional base training will obtain the "Aviation Sports Flight Pilot License" issued by the China Aviation Sports Association and will be recommended to join the China Aviation Sports Association (issued a membership card).

Tandem paragliding experience

Tandem paragliding is a brand-new, trendy experience for beginners. The instructor guides you throughout the entire flight, controlling the parachute while you experience the freedom of flight. All you need to do is bring your best mood and your most beautiful posture, and soar to your heart's content. Experience a thrilling and innovative new way of life!

Security

According to the sports safety rankings published by the World Sports Federation (risk factor from high to low), paragliding ranks 47th, behind road cycling at 46th, while football has a risk factor of 7th. This means that as long as you strictly follow the coach's requirements and the rules of the sport, paragliding is safer than road cycling and much safer than playing football.

The tandem parachute is flown one-on-one by a professional instructor from Yuren, so safety is guaranteed.

Flight Notes

1. During the parachute launch and flight process, you must obey the instructor's instructions to avoid unsafe conditions.

2. Sports shoes: Because you need to run with the coach before taking off, you must wear sports shoes. Don't wear sandals as it is easy to fall while running.

3. Some coaches in the air will ask you to operate the parachute. Don’t panic, it’s exciting to experience it. If you don’t want to, you can greet the coach in advance.

4. Sun protection: Outdoor activities can cause strong UV rays, so please take sun protection measures. Wear long sleeves and long pants, a hat, sunglasses, a headscarf, and apply sunscreen.

5. During the flight, you are not allowed to remove any equipment (including seat bags, helmets, protective gear, etc.) without permission.

6. For safety reasons, do not bring your own filming equipment into the sky and remove any sharp objects.

7. Protective gear must be worn, including elbow pads, knee pads, safety seat bags, and helmets.

8. Do not eat on an empty stomach, do not eat too much, and do not drink alcohol to prevent dizziness and vomiting due to altitude.

Photography Tips

1. When shooting aerial videos, ask the instructor to help you find the angle. The angles they find are always better than ours. You can change them more often and don’t always shoot at the same angle. Pay attention to the light and look at the direction of the sun, otherwise your face will be dark.

2. Leave at least 5GB of memory on your phone. Downloading videos and photos is high-definition, so copying them takes up a lot of space. Alternatively, you can bring a USB drive.

3. If you have a high hairline, it is recommended to cover it with makeup, because the distance between the camera in the sky and your face is quite close.

4. Stretch your legs + close your mouth = better-looking photos. The more stretched the pose is, the better it looks. The more you open your mouth, the worse the photo will be.

5. Make sure to tie your hair tightly! If your hair is too messy, it may cause a lot of waste.

6. Choose clothes that are brightly colored or white, not too dark.

Conclusion

Everyone needs to fly once, to experience the feeling of looking down on the world. The advent of paragliding has given humans wings to soar, allowing us to experience the feeling of leaving the ground and soaring through the sky, savoring the tranquility and beauty of "escaping" the pull of gravity. This feeling is irreplaceable in other sports and is a must-try.

Ordinary life is too boring, why not try to be more free and easy, take bold risks and fly to the clouds.

Those adventurous dreams of yours, I hope someone will go crazy with you.
