Check out the glaciers worth visiting in Tibet, and the niche glaciers are comparable to those in Northern Europe

Preface

Iceland is on many people's must-visit list. The pure and pristine natural scenery there can give people the most intuitive shock, including glaciers.

For those who have never been close to a glacier, when you see it, it seems as if you can feel the pulse and breath of the earth. The shock of the tip of the iceberg shows the magic and vastness of nature, and we are just a tiny drop in the ocean!

In addition to Iceland and other places, such magnificent natural landscapes can also be found in China. There are several in Tibet. Do you want to see them?

The most "down-to-earth" glacier

Tsogyal Glacier

The Tsogyal Glacier, also known as the 40th Glacier, is named after the No. 40 boundary marker adjacent to the border between China and Bhutan. It is located in Langkazi County, Shannan Prefecture, Tibet, at the foot of the northern slope of the Zhuomulara Snow Mountain, adjacent to Bhutan.

Glacier 40 can be accessed from both Langkazi County and Kangma County. We chose a more challenging route, starting from Kangma County, along the border line from Sabuse to Wajiela, crossing several passes, passing the Zhuomula Rikang glacier tongue, and reaching Glacier 40. This is the closest glacier known in China. After arriving, no professional equipment is required, and everyone can get close to it.

There are 40 glacier moraines, moraine lakes, glacier tongues, ice towers, ice stalactites, ice cracks, ice lakes, ice caves and other landform features that will surely amaze you.

We also attach great importance to the safety of this route. Our high-altitude modified off-road team with more than 10 years of experience will escort you throughout the journey without worries and let you travel with peace of mind!

The Third Pole of the World

Puruogangri Glacier

Puruogangri is located in the northeast of Shuanghu Special District in the northwest of Qiangtang, and is the core area of the national Qiangtang Nature Reserve. The discovery of Puruogangri proves that in addition to areas near the polar regions, there are also glaciers with huge ice sheets in the world. Its ice field area is 422 square kilometers, making it the third largest glacier in the world after Antarctica and the Arctic.

Starting from June 1, 2018, the Shuanghu County Government of Nagqu City, Tibet announced that the Puruogangri Glacier entered the ecological protection period. In 2020, China-TravelNote, in collaboration with the well-known expedition team Earth Code, became the first and only travel agency approved by the Tibet Autonomous Region to obtain official permission to enter the core area of the Qiangtang No Man's Land in a formal and legal manner.

Follow China-TravelNote and enjoy the wonders of the Puruogangri Glacier, including its ice walls and ice caves, up close. Standing beneath the glacier, the huge ice blocks remaining on the riverbed and the nearby mountains will make you feel how powerful nature is, yet how fragile and insignificant it is. Experience the most direct shock of the world's third pole!

Beautiful tears of the blue planet

Qudennima Glacier

Suppose there are 100 people traveling to Tibet, and only one of them has been to the Qudennima Glacier.

The Qudennima Glacier, once called the "Glacier at the End of the World" by China National Geographic, is located in the Shigatse region of Tibet. The Chinese meaning of Qudennima is "Diamond Sun God Tower".

According to legend, a pagoda shipped from India passed through this place, and the sun happened to shine on the diamond on the top of the pagoda, so this name came into being. There is also a legend that Guru Padmasambhava and the dakini Yeshe Tsogyal once came here and felt that this snow mountain was shaped like a vajra, so they named it "Dorje Choeden Nyima".

The Qudennima Glacier is composed of several well-developed glacier groups. There are glacial lakes under the three main glaciers, named Jinhu (East Holy Lake), Yinhu (West Holy Lake) and Tonghu, which are located in the east, west and south of the glacier respectively.

Follow us along the Himalayas to the Qudennima Glacier, where you will see large chunks of unmelted ice floating on the turquoise lake water, and a huge natural crystal glacier behind it. You can clearly see the texture carved by time on the fracture surface of the glacier tongue.

In addition to these three glaciers that have been introduced, China-TravelNote can also take you to lesser-known glaciers in other parts of Tibet.

The Mysterious Gate of Medog

Gaolongla Glacier

The Galung La Glacier is a must-pass place to enter Medog. It is divided into the Galung East Glacier and the West Glacier. The East Glacier is located on the east side of the Galung Temple, about 5.5 kilometers long, and its ice tongue has an average width of 400 meters. The West Glacier is located on the northwest side of the Dolar Pass, with an upper limit of 5,520 meters above sea level and about 5 kilometers long.

The bottom of the glacier confluence is a summer pasture with abundant water and grass. The herders' cabins are built at the end of the glacier. The dense forests, snow-capped mountains and glaciers, and ranch cabins form a beautiful picture of the snowy pastoral area.

The world's largest and most densely populated hanging glacier

Dew Glacier

In January 2016, the China Geographic Landscape Discovery Scientific Expedition Team discovered five giant, fully developed hanging glaciers in the Buga Snow Mountain at the junction of Dingqing County, Baqing County and Sog County in Qamdo City, Tibet.

Extending from the 6,328-meter-high peak of Buga Snow Mountain to the moraine lake at an altitude of more than 4,200 meters, the hanging glacier has a drop of more than 2,100 meters. This discovery also made it the world's largest hanging glacier, which is the Shurong Glacier.

The surface of the Turong Glacier is composed of a series of parallel ridges, much like the ridges on a washboard. The vertical compression from the glacier forms ice wrinkles and cracks, presenting an uneven shape. The bottom of the glacier is a frozen moraine lake.

Using an aerial camera to overlook the Rongrong Glacier, the surface of the glacier at an altitude of about 4,800 meters can clearly see the huge ice cracks on the surface.

The Shurong Glacier is still in an underdeveloped state. Perhaps compared to those ancient glaciers in Tibet, it is still in its "adolescence" and is growing vigorously, but for humans, it has witnessed too many vicissitudes and great changes, witnessing the magnificent Qinghai-Tibet Plateau rising from the ocean, and witnessing the ever-changing pulse and breathing of the earth.

The closest glacier to Lhasa

Kuqionggangri Glacier

Kuqionggangri Glacier Park is located in Geda Township, Dangxiong County, Tibet, at an altitude of about 5,500 meters, about 160 kilometers away from Lhasa. It is a unique glacier that integrates glaciers, snow-capped mountains, lakes and meadows.

Here, you can get close to the glacier and experience the joy of climbing. If you don’t have enough time for your trip, a day trip to the Kuqionggangri Glacier is also a good choice!
