The most comprehensive guide to traveling the Himalayas! Explore Tibet and see over 20 sacred mountains.

Preface

The Himalayas are located on the border between China and Nepal, half of which is in Tibet, China, and half is outside the country. The main peak is the world's highest peak, Mount Everest, which we are familiar with. There are 40 peaks with an altitude of more than 7,000 meters and 10 peaks with an altitude of more than 8,000 meters.

From snow-capped glaciers to magnificent Tibetan Buddhist temples, from azure holy lakes to the wild animals and plants living there, they are all representatives of nature's magnificent scenery, bursting with vigorous vitality surrounded by magnificent snow-capped mountains.

The Great Himalayas

Cross-country trekking through the Himalayas, China-TravelNote offers this route for your pilgrimage:

Tears of the Blue Planet

Qudennima Glacier

The Qudennima Glacier can satisfy all your imaginations about glaciers - the ice tongue pours down like an ice-blue dream, crystal clear. You can also get close to the holy lake below the glacier, the temple not far away, and look out at the 8,000-meter+ mountains surrounding it. This is the most typical Tibetan landscape sketch!

Holy Lakes along the Himalayas

Baima Lingcuo

Baimalincuo, located in Shannan, China, is surrounded by the Kulagangri Mountains. In winter, the lake is frozen and covered with snow. In summer, flowers are everywhere, and in autumn, the leaves are colorful. Each season has its own unique and beautiful scenery.

Legend has it that this is one of the three soul lakes of Guru Padmasambhava. People with good fortune can see their past and present lives through the lake. If you come to Shannan, Tibet, you might as well try your luck and take a look at your past and present lives.

Pumoyongcuo

Pumoyongcuo is located at the junction of Lhoza County and Langkazi County in Shannan Prefecture. The sacred mountain Kulagangri is right next to the lake. The blue lake water reflects different lights under the sunlight. Pumoyongcuo in winter is like a huge sapphire abandoned on the earth. The endless lake surface, thick ice layer, and broken texture all exude a unique magnificence.

A sentimental mistake

The lake reflects the 7,326-meter-high Zhuomulaji Snow Mountain, one of the seven sacred mountains in Tibet, alongside Mount Everest. No one has yet reached the summit of Zhuomulaji Snow Mountain. On the other side of the mountain lies Bhutan, demonstrating the remoteness of Duoqingcuo.

Although Duoqingcuo is located in a remote and difficult-to-reach area, the scenery here is not desolate. The lake is surrounded by green and flat grasslands, which is even more charming in spring and summer. If you are lucky, you can even encounter wild animals living here. The snow-capped mountains, lakes, blue sky and red sun complement each other.

Tibetan Buddhist temples

If the magnificent scenery, from rolling grasslands to towering snow-capped mountains reaching into the blue sky, is not enough to attract you, then the vibrant Buddhist culture and the friendly and kind Tibetan people will also be one of the most exciting parts of this journey.

Rito Temple

As one of the three holy lakes, Yamdrok Lake is world-famous for its crystal clear blue-green water. Many people yearn for Yamdrok Lake, but when they go there to check in, they may overlook the Rito Temple, which is known as the "loneliest temple in the world."

Follow the China-TravelNote off-road team to Rito Monastery, where you can not only enjoy a 360-degree wide-angle view of Yanghu Lake, but also experience the daily life of ascetic monks in a short time. From the aerial view, Rito Monastery stands quietly, surrounded by an isolated charm.

Sakaguto Temple

Located 50 kilometers south of Lhoza County, the temple has a history of more than 900 years. Surrounded by snow-capped mountains, it looks very holy and solemn from a distance. The main hall of the temple is the Great Buddha Hall called Gawa Gyuni, which is nine stories high in the middle of the temple.

Tourists who enjoy humanities and history should not miss this attraction. The temple houses murals depicting the stories and figures of the Kagyu sect, as well as early murals of the Tibetan Mendang school and Tibetan Buddhist scriptures, which are of great historical, cultural and artistic value.

Himalayan Snow Mountain Feast

The snow-capped mountains of Tibet have always been a favorite destination for photographers. The world's snow-capped peaks are in full view. Here, life is nakedly facing the majesty of the world and the universe.

Mount Everest (8,844 meters)

On the sixth day of the trip, we drove from Dingjie County and continued west to the Lhotse Viewing Platform. From here, we could take photos of the world's fourth highest peak, Lhotse, at an altitude of 8,516 meters, and Mount Everest in the distance. We then climbed the layers of Mount Everest Road and took photos of Mount Everest, the roof of Asia, at the Gawu La Pass.

If the weather is ideal, you can also see four snow-capped mountains over 8,000 meters: Makalu (8,463 meters), Lhotse (8,516 meters), Everest (8,844 meters), and Cho Oyu (8,201 meters).

Lhotse (8,516 meters)

It is located 3 kilometers south of Mount Everest and is connected to Mount Everest through the South Col. The two are covered by huge glaciers, like a pair of twin brothers. With the highest peak, Mount Everest, on its side, many tourists will inevitably ignore the charm of Mount Lhotse, which ranks fourth in the world in altitude, but its majestic momentum should not be underestimated.

Shishapangma Peak (8013 meters)

Continue west and split off from National Highway 318 at the Nyalam Road junction. With luck, you might encounter Tibetan wild donkeys. Then you'll see Shishapangma, a sacred mountain known for its auspiciousness and at 8,012 meters. It's the only 8,000-meter peak located entirely within China.

Kulagangri Peak (7538 meters)

It is located in the middle section of the Himalayas on the border between China and Bhutan, standing on the main ridge of the middle section of the Himalayas. It is one of the four traditional sacred mountains of Tibetans - the southern sacred mountain Kula Gangri (the others are the eastern sacred mountain Wodegongjie, the U-Tsang sacred mountain Yala Xiangbu, and the northern Qiangtang sacred mountain Nyainqentanglha).

The main peak is 7,538 meters above sea level and is the highest peak in Shannan area. Although not many people know about it, there are always pilgrims who plan to include it in their future hiking trips, just because it is surrounded by snow-capped peaks and glaciers, and its magnificence is comparable to Nepal's EBC. On the south side of the peaks are scattered holy lakes such as Baima Lingcuo and Jiejiucuo, which are as precious as treasures on the plateau, and they complement each other with the magnificent snow-capped mountains.

Cho Oyu (8,201 meters)

Cho Oyu is a majestic mountain and the sixth highest peak in the world. It stands tall and majestic in the central Himalayas. Cho Oyu has five main ridges, with snow-capped peaks standing around the mountain and surrounded by valley glaciers.
