Beiyang Mountain is also called Beiyang Mountain. Its highest point is 1,920 meters above sea level. The area has distinct features such as stone buds, stone forests, peak forests, alpine karst hills, karst gullies, sinkholes, blind valleys, dry valleys, small karst basins, caves, and underground rivers. Karst gullies and stone buds are all over the mountains, karst depressions, karst valleys and dry valleys are widely distributed, tiankengs and vertical shafts are distinctive, peak forests and peak clusters are dotted around, caves and underground rivers are crisscrossed, the surface landscape shows diversity, the vertical distribution of plants is distinct, the alternation of peaks and forests is quite distinctive, the alpine grasslands are flat and vast, and the river valleys are winding.

Beiyang Mountain is associated with the story of Zhang Liang, one of the Three Heroes of the Western Han Dynasty. Legend has it that after the founding of the Western Han Dynasty, Zhang Liang retired from his duties, practiced abstinence and Taoism, and lived in seclusion on Yangshan Mountain. Emperor Gaozu of Han, Liu Bang, was deeply moved by Zhang Liang and visited the area several times, riding across the Qinling Mountains and following the Qianyou River to Zhen'an. Upon hearing this, Zhang Liang, fearing the treacherous mountain road would tire his imperial entourage, sent men to intercept him at Zhuanghe Village in present-day Tiechang Town, hence the name Lanma River. Liu Bang insisted on meeting Zhang Liang, but Zhang Liang had no choice but to meet him at the foot of Jianfeng Pass in Yuexi Village in present-day Qingtongguan Town (the small ridge below Jianfeng Pass is known as "Shengjia Liang"). The emperor and his minister admired the picturesque scenery and discussed state affairs. They walked along Beiyang Mountain to the Shuige Pavilion, then descended the Guanting River and stayed at Gongguan (formerly under the jurisdiction of Zhen'an, now under the jurisdiction of Xunyang County). Zhang Liang hosted a banquet for the emperor and his minister, who bid a farewell. Later, when King Ying Bu of Huainan rebelled, Emperor Gaozu of Han followed Zhang Liang's plan and personally led the army eastward, thus achieving his great cause and leaving behind a legendary story.
