At 12:10 PM, your guide will lead you to the official Baoding Mountain Rock Carvings tour. Admire the large-scale rock carvings of my country's late Tang Dynasty. The carvings on Baoding Mountain's cliffs date back to the Southern Song Dynasty. Within a 500-meter radius, Buddhist statues are carved throughout the rock. Famous figures include the Six Paths of Reincarnation, the Great Treasure Pavilion, the Two Holy Images of Huayan, and the Thousand-Armed Guanyin. This is a treasure trove of Chinese grotto art, integrating Buddhism, Confucianism, and Taoism. UNESCO has designated it a monument to Chinese grotto art. After your tour, visit Shengshou Temple at the mountain gate. Shengshou Temple, also known as Baoding Shengshou Temple, is located 15 kilometers northeast of Dazu District, Chongqing, to the right of the Big Buddha Bay on Baoding Mountain. Built during the Chunxi reign of the Southern Song Dynasty, it was a Tantric Zen monastery founded by the renowned monk Zhao Zhifeng. Originally known as Wufo Cliff, it took on its current name after expansion. The original temple has been abandoned, and the remaining buildings date back to the Ming and Qing dynasties.
At 2:10 PM, we'll head to the Beishan Rock Carvings. While the stone carvings here are relatively small in scale, they are nonetheless exquisite. The carvings began in the Tang Dynasty and continued until the Southern Song Dynasty. The small, delicate Buddha statues vary in form, showcasing both the plump and simple style of Tang Dynasty sculptures and the slender and graceful beauty of Song Dynasty sculptures. The most famous of these is the Chakravartin Cave No. 136, considered a representative example of Song Dynasty stone carving.
Return in time
The above itinerary may be adjusted due to weather, road conditions, etc. Please understand.
We'll pick you up from Chongqing's main business district between 7:00 and 7:30 AM. Our first stop will be the Dazu Beishan Rock Carvings. The Beishan cliff carvings date back to the late Tang Dynasty and continued through the Southern Song Dynasty. Located 2 kilometers north of Dazu District, the carvings are located on Beishan Mountain. Centered around Dafo Bay, they encompass five locations: Guanyin Slope, Yingpan Slope, Foer Rock, and Beita Temple. The cliffs stretch over 500 meters, each about 7 meters high. Sculptures are carved along the cliffs. From south to north, the cliffs are shaped like a crescent moon, with niches resembling beehives. There are over 5,000 statues.
Afterwards, we will visit the World Cultural Heritage [Dazu Baodingshan Rock Carvings] (about 2 hours) to admire the large-scale cave sculpture art from the late Tang Dynasty in China. The Baodingshan cliff sculptures were first carved during the Southern Song Dynasty. Within a 500-meter radius, there are Buddha statues carved on the rock. The most famous ones are the Six Paths of Reincarnation, the Guangda Baoge Tower, the Huayan Three Saints, and the Thousand-Armed Guanyin. It is an artistic treasure of Chinese stone carving art that integrates Buddhism, Confucianism, and Taoism.
Afterwards, visit the Dazu Museum (closed on Mondays). Located at 7 Beishan Road, Longgang Subdistrict, Dazu County, Chongqing, the museum covers 58.5 hectares and has a floor area of 18,000 square meters. It is a specialized museum dedicated to rock carvings. The museum primarily displays the Beishan Grottoes, Baodingshan Grottoes, Shimenshan Grottoes, and Nanshan Grottoes. As of the end of 2019, the museum boasted a total of 614 items and sets of works.
