4-Day Hiking in Western Sichuan | Crossing the Tagong Grasslands and Pilgrimage to Yala Gongga

Day 1 Chengdu → Danba → Zhonglu Tibetan Village

All day

Meet at Exit E of Wenhuagong Subway Station between 7:30-8:00 in the morning (the specific time is subject to the tour leader's notification). After the number of people is counted, take the bus to Danba [Zhonglu Tibetan Village]

There is no special itinerary today. The driving time is quite long. You can prepare some snacks and neck pillows.

After passing through Luding County, we will have a light lunch and then arrive at the foot of Zhonglu Mountain. We will then take a local bus up to Zhonglu Tibetan Village.

Enjoy Tibetan cuisine in the Tibetan village for dinner and fall asleep under the stars in the countryside.

Since Zhonglu Tibetan Village is only about 2,500 meters above sea level, it is a good transit point for those who are new to the plateau to adapt to the altitude, so you don’t have to worry about altitude sickness.

Driving time: about 6 hours

Hiking: Accommodation Altitude: 2500

Day 2: Zhonglu Tibetan Village → Suopo Diaolou → Wadain Road → Bamei Town/Tagong Town

All day

At around 8:00 in the morning, we packed our gear, had a simple breakfast at the B&B, and prepared to warm up and start hiking.

Starting from the B&B you are staying at, follow the country road to the highest point of the ridge, climbing all the way. Everyone should pay attention to control the pace of walking and not rush forward too fast;

Take a short break at the highest point, eat some food you brought with you, and then go down the mountain towards Suopo Diaolou.

After arriving at Suopo Village, take the local transfer bus back to the Wadan Road, transfer to our bus, and go to Bamei Town to check in.

<Suopo Diaolou>: Suopo is the place with the most ancient watchtowers in Danba and even in the whole world, with a total of 84, including the only pentagonal watchtower in the world, whose value is self-evident.

<Old Road of Dongnu Kingdom>: Before the construction of the Wadain Road along the Dadu River, except for the road from Xiaojin to Jinchuan, communication between villages mostly required crossing mountains and ridges. The pass that was crossed to enter the ancient Dongnu Kingdom also became a bridge for the dissemination of culture and materials.

Note: During holidays, the hotel you stay in will be adjusted according to the actual accommodation situation. You may stay in Bamei or Tagong Town.

Driving time: about 3 hours

Hiking: Hiking distance: about 9km Estimated time: 6h Altitude climb: 550m, starting altitude: 2500m

Day 3 Bamei Town → Balangshengdu Village → Tagong Town/Xinduqiao Town

All day

Today is one of the hardest days of hiking.

Depart at 8 am. After breakfast at the hotel, try to prepare your hiking gear one day in advance.

We arrived at the Balangshengdu transfer bus point between 8:30 and 9:00 and took the transfer bus to Balangshengdu village;

From a corner of the village, we walked along a meadow-covered hillside path towards the ridgeline. When we reached the top, the entire Tagong Meadows stretched endlessly like the undulating Kalajun Meadows. The little-known mountain path extended all the way to the sacred place of faith [Tagong Temple], where there are only three life-size statues of 12-year-old Sakyamuni in the world.

The route sees slight elevation changes along the way, passing the Balangshengdu Viewing Platform where you can see the vast meadows of Tagong. The journey ends at Tagong Temple, where you will complete your journey (depending on your parking location).

After changing to the bus, return to Xinduqiao Town/Tagong Town hotel to check in and rest.

Note: Accommodation in Tagong Town or Xinduqiao Town will be arranged based on the actual housing availability in the town.

Driving time: about 2 hours

Hiking: Hiking distance: 14km Altitude gain: 500m Estimated time: 6h Starting altitude: 4000m

Note: Since this is a single-day crossing, it is recommended to carry a small backpack with a meal and spare snacks, drinking water for the day (about 600ml-1000ml, depending on your needs), and a spare warm layer.

Day 4: Tagong Town/Xinduqiao Town → Honghaizi → Mugecuo → Chengdu

All day

After breakfast as early as possible in the morning, depart from the hotel around 7:30 and head to Honghaizi

Along the way, you will pass by the Qingraoshan Observation Deck (you will not pass by if you stay in Xinduqiao), cross the Yala Pass and arrive at the Red Lake.

After paying a certain fee, we entered the Red Lake around 9:30 and walked down along the lake. In the distance, the Bijia Mountain dotted the sky.

After about 4 hours of hiking, we arrived at the Mugecuo Scenic Area. After buying our tickets, we toured the scenic area as usual.

After leaving the scenic area at around 3:00 PM, we took a bus back to downtown Chengdu and dispersed at the Cultural Palace subway station around 7:00 PM.

Note: As hiking time in western Sichuan varies from person to person and everyone's level of skill varies, the return time may be delayed. We hope that tourists will understand this. If you need to return on the same day, it is recommended to purchase a large transportation ticket after 22:00 to avoid delays.

Driving time: 6 hours

Hiking: Hiking distance: 10km, altitude descent: 350m, estimated time: 3.5h, starting altitude: 4200m

Note: Due to the different directions of Xinduqiao and Tagong, the driving routes to the Red Lake are also different. The scenery along the way depends on the actual situation.
