It is 130 kilometers from Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan Province, and enjoys convenient transportation. Established in 1963, the reserve, covering 200,000 hectares, is one of China's earliest comprehensive nature reserves and is designated a "Popular Science Education Base" and a "Patriotic Education Base" by both the state and Sichuan Province.

Wolong Nature Reserve is the third largest nature reserve in Sichuan Province. It is the largest, most complex, and home to the most rare plants and animals. Spanning Wolong and Gengda Townships, the reserve stretches 52 kilometers from east to west and 62 kilometers from north to south, covering a total area of approximately 700,000 hectares. It primarily protects the natural ecosystems of the southwestern alpine forests and rare animals such as the giant panda.
