Nestled among the mountains of southern Anhui, the Ruoling Ancient Road winds like a sleeping dragon between Shexian, Jingde, and Huangshan Districts. This official road, originally built during the Sui and Tang dynasties, was once a vital link connecting ancient Huizhou with the outside world. The deep and shallow hoofprints on the bluestone slabs tell the stories of countless merchants and travelers.

Built over 1,400 years ago during the Sui Dynasty, this ancient trail is one of China's top ten ancient hiking trails. The entire trail is Y-shaped, and this hike covers the upper "V" portion of the Y—the Jingshe Ancient Trail and the Sui and Tang Ancient Trail sections. The three ends of the trail connect Jingde County in Xuancheng, She County in Huangshan, and Huizhou District. The Jingde County section is known as the "Jingshe Ancient Trail," representing the upper right section of the "Y." Within She County, the "Ruoling Ancient Trail" remains the lower half of the "Y." The Taiping section in Huangshan District is known as the "Sui and Tang Ancient Trail," representing the upper left section of the "Y." However, these three sections are all one ancient trail. The ancient trail served as a crucial route for ancient Huizhou merchants transporting grain, salt, and mountain products. For thousands of years, officials traveled through this route, scholars took provincial and imperial examinations, merchants transported goods, and ordinary people exchanged family ties.
