Kuroshio Tank: A Thrilling Ocean Experience / Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium

The Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium is located in Motobu Town, Okinawa, about a two-hour drive from downtown Naha. It's best enjoyed as part of a self-drive itinerary. The aquarium is located within Ocean Expo Park, surrounded by facilities like a dolphin theater, a tropical botanical garden, and a beach, making it ideal for a full-day stay. Parking is free and ample, and the entrance is a 3-5 minute walk away.

Admission is 2,180 yen per adult, and free for elementary school students and younger. Pre-booking tickets at supermarkets or travel websites often saves a few hundred yen, making it a moderately priced and well-worthwhile experience. The aquarium's most famous feature is the massive "Kuroshio Sea" tank. The sight of whale sharks swimming freely is breathtaking, and with manta rays and other large fish circling overhead, the aquarium's awe surpasses that of other aquariums.

In addition to the main tank, there are also sub-areas such as the Deep Sea Zone, the Coral Sea Exhibit, tropical fish, sea turtles, and manatees. The sheer size of the aquarium can take two to three hours to fully explore. If you have time, we recommend attending the keeper's feeding session to gain a deeper understanding of the aquarium's operations. The dolphin show, a favorite for children, is held outdoors, free of charge, and has a lively atmosphere—a must-see. Overall, it's a must-see for any family trip to Okinawa.
