Todaiji Temple is the main temple of the Kegon sect in Japan, also known as the Great Kegon Temple, the Golden Light Four Heavenly Kings Gokokuji Temple, etc. Located in the east of Heijokyo (now Nara), it is one of the seven great temples of Nanto. It has a history of more than 1,200 years and is the largest wooden building in the world today. It is a true world cultural heritage.
Since Emperor Shomu ordered its construction in 728 in imitation of the Chinese temple architectural structure, although Todaiji Temple has been damaged twice over the long years, its size was still as high as two-thirds when it was rebuilt in 1709, making it the best-preserved wooden structure in the world.
Todaiji Temple covers a vast area, 0.8 kilometers wide from east to west and 1 kilometer long from north to south. The central courtyard is spacious, and the main hall, the Great Buddha Hall, was 11 bays wide when it was first built, with a width of 88 meters. Its grandeur is similar to the Qianyuan Hall of the Luoyang Palace in the Sui and Tang Dynasties. Strolling through Todaiji Temple, you can easily feel the majestic momentum of the giant temples built by the state in Chang'an and Luoyang during the Tang Dynasty. It is the most representative of the many temple buildings in Nara and is definitely worth a visit! !
