Ayutthaya was the ancient capital of Thailand. The Ayutthaya Dynasty lasted 417 years, the longest dynasty in Thai history. It once annexed the Sukhothai Dynasty, the Lanna Kingdom, and even played with the Angkor Kingdom.

During the Burmese invasion in the 18th century, Ayutthaya suffered damage and many Buddhist temples were destroyed. The remains of broken walls and headless Buddha statues are scattered throughout the city, which was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991.

Take a train (20-345THB depending on the type of vehicle) or a minibus (70 THB), the journey takes about 1.5 hours.
