Jing'an Temple was built in 247 by the order of Sun Quan of Wu. It was located in a different place at the time, but was moved to its current location in 1216. It has a history of 1800 years, but the building was rebuilt after the Cultural Revolution, and its golden brilliance makes it feel different from Japan.
The way to worship is to hold incense sticks over your head in the middle of the grounds, bow three times to the north, south, east and west, and pray. In front of the Buddha, kneel and bow deeply three times. It's awkward if you're not used to it, but everything is an experience. It seems that Chinese people also have their own way of doing things.
It's easily accessible from the city center, so be sure to visit it when you're sightseeing in Shanghai.
Access: Right outside Exit 1 of Jing'an Temple Station on Line 2 and Line 7
Opening hours: 7:30-17:00
Admission fee: 50 yuan (you need to register with WeChat to enter)
Incense fee: 10 yuan
