Cambodia in Contrast: Angkor Wat & Phnom Penh
Few places in the world stir such powerful emotions as Cambodia — a land where ancient temples meet raw, recent history. In just a few days, I experienced awe, wonder, sorrow, and deep respect for the resilience of its people.
Angkor Wat: A Sunrise You’ll Never Forget
We began in Siem Reap, gateway to the Angkor Archaeological Park — one of the world’s most breathtaking historical sites. Watching the sunrise over Angkor Wat is a moment that stays with you forever. The sky lights up behind the iconic towers as their reflection dances in the lotus ponds below. It’s pure magic.
But Angkor Wat is just one piece of this vast ancient puzzle. Bayon Temple stuns with its massive stone faces, while Ta Prohm, with tree roots wrapped around ruins, feels like a lost world reclaimed by nature.
Entry Fees (2025):
1-day pass: $37 USD
3-day pass: $62 USD
7-day pass: $72 USD
Tip: Hire a local tuk-tuk driver and go early to avoid the crowds and heat.
Phnom Penh: Cambodia’s Painful History
After the beauty of Angkor, we traveled to Phnom Penh, Cambodia’s capital — vibrant on the surface, yet deeply marked by its past.
The Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum (S-21) was once a school, turned into a prison during the Khmer Rouge regime. Its cells and haunting photos of victims are deeply sobering.
Just outside the city lies the Choeung Ek Killing Fields, where a peaceful field holds unspeakable sorrow. The memorial stupa, filled with skulls, stands as a stark reminder of the 1.7 million lives lost between 1975 and 1979.
Entry Fees:
Tuol Sleng: $5 USD ($8 with audio guide)
Killing Fields: $6 USD (audio included)
These visits are heavy — but necessary. They honor the past and teach us the cost of silence and extremism.
A Journey of Contrast and Courage
Cambodia is a land of contrasts — ancient temples that inspire awe, and memorials that break your heart. Yet what lingers most is the strength and kindness of its people.
Come for the beauty, stay for the stories — and leave forever.
