I stumbled upon Kakurega (The Lair) in Chinatown and was instantly drawn in by its secretive charm. It’s tucked away on Smith Street, and stepping inside felt like discovering a hidden izakaya in Tokyo. The space was cozy and atmospheric—low lighting, wooden interiors, and just the right amount of buzz.
I ordered a few signature bites. The gyu tataki was one of my favorites—thinly sliced seared beef that was tender and full of flavor. I also tried the scallops with cheese, and it was so satisfying—fresh, melty, and well-balanced.
Their dried fish bar snacks like Eihire and Kawahagi added a nice salty chewiness. What stood out most was the relaxed pace and ambience. It never felt rushed. I could take my time, enjoy the flavors, and just unwind in this little hideaway. It’s the kind of spot I’d go back to for a chill evening with good food, drinks, and conversation.
It’s a gem in the city—definitely a spot I’d return to for another quiet, flavorful escape.
