I lived in San Antonio back in the early 90’s and Alamo Cafe was our go-to place for Mexican food in a city full of outstanding choices. Each time I visit or drive through the city it is a must-stop for me and my family. We always go to the San Pedro location because it’s closest to the original location. Our food choices are simple. A large queso (the best I’ve ever eaten), flour tortillas (to die for) and beef fajitas. I’m sure their other menu items are good, but this is our same order for the last twenty-five year. I went twice in two days on a business trip this week and the food was awesome as usual. The only reason it receives four stars is for the service. If it had been only once, I probably would have given them a pass. But both times our server was a little slow, inexperienced and not very attentive. But if I was in San Antonio today, then the serving experience can’t outweigh the delicious food. I shall return.

The food is good here but it is so loud I could not even enjoy myself. I swear my ears are ringing. And it does seem like management does not care.

Biggest disappointment was ordering two huge containers of queso and did not get any tortillas. That is Alamo's trademark, and can't believe they don't come with any order. I was picking it up for a surprise party and it was 15 minutes late in preparation. That could have been a disaster. The food we got was good and all eaten, but the problems made it a no go for me.

My spouse and I went there Saturday afternoon for a meal. Everything was very good. The service was excellent and the food very good. I plan on going back there soon!

We had a party of 11, arrived around 8pm, were seated almost immediately at a long table. Our server was courteous and got all our orders right, some orders were very explicit too. No long wait for the food, everyone was very satisfied with their dishes. The hot tortillas were amazing!!! Best tortillas EVER! They give you complimentary chips and salsa, which was tasty, not overly hot like other places. Even the chopped chicken in the chicken avo salad was moist and delicious. It was a fun and lively atmosphere. Glad we went there.

We met friends this Friday, November 16, 2018, at the Alamo. The wait was 45 minutes. The results of the wait were the worst meal my wife and I have had in 30 years in San Antonio. I ordered the six ounce chicken fried steak, gravy on the side, mashed potatoes and green beans. My wife ordered, at the recommendation of the wait person, the grilled fish tacos. Both dishes Alamo Cafe are famous for.... in the past. The cf steak was an industrial circle of mostly crust, the mashed potatoes were lumpy and cold and the gravy was clearly from a large can from some institutional kitchen. My wife had difficulty finding any fish in her tacos, they were chocked filled with slaw and some dressing. Oh, the good news, their flour tortillas were good, and my wife said the small margarita was very good. Summary: Alamo Cafe should stop their food service and turn into a massive bar. They are certainly no longer a feel good restaurant with good food. They are a warming agent for Sigma or some other food prep organization.

The food wasn’t bad, it just wasn’t my favorite! My enchiladas were a bit bland and our queso we ordered was so lumpy it definitely hadn’t been heated well. My husband said he enjoyed his street tacos and the tortillas were very good. We probably won’t be going back though, there are to many great places in the area to just go to an “okay” one.

Alamo Café, the San Pedro location, is a "don't miss" spot for locals and tourists alike. The atmosphere is excellent, whether siting inside, at the bar, or on the patios. Very good food at a surprising low price. Margaritas = A-, tortillas = A-, fajitas = A+, hot sauce = B, friendliness & service = A. This place is busy noon and night, however it's a large restaurant so the wait time is usually very minimal. Family oriented, great spot!

Busy place for a Sunday lunch but we were quickly seated. Without any contact with the food server, fresh hot tortillas and salsa appeared at our table. Even though it was extremely busy, the server was there and checked back frequently. Food portions are good and the menu prices are reasonable. Tasty food with good salsa. Highly recommend.

Anytime we take the grandkids to San Antonio we always eat one of our evening meals at the Alamo Cafe! Over the years we’ve tried many Mexican restaurants in San Antonio but this is not only our favorite but truly stands out as the leader by far! Their fajitas are Fantastic, moist and tender with an excellent flavor as well as other dishes we’ve had the pleasure of enjoying! A trip to San Antonio is not complete without a great meal to be had here!

We arrived at 1pm- a busy Saturday time I understand- but to be still without food at 2:15 was ridiculous. My shrimp enchiladas were tasty although pretty sparse in the shrimp department. My sons chicken tenders were fairly over cooked. Good salsa and chips fortunately kept us from walking out!

First of all our server Kaleb was GREAT! Our drink glasses never went empty and he could not have been any nicer and accommodating. Thank you Kaleb!!..., our fajitas were very tender and juicy. They bring you plenty of tortillas. The beans, rice , and pico de gallo were delicious. Our food was hot when brought to our table. Our friends also loved their food. We were seated right away even though it was busy. The restaurant is very clean. You will not be disappointed in this restaurant.

Visitors to San Antonio who prefer traditional Tex-Mex will like this place. It is also popular on workdays at lunchtime because they consistently serve good meals in a timely manner. While I like their homemade tortillas, their quesadillas are a little disappointing. The street taco quesadillas had very little cheese. The spinach and mushroom quesadillas were better, but I do wish they were a bit more buttery on the outside. Friends and family I have brought here liked this place. They are fixing up their patio, which is beautiful. Service is pretty good. I should have asked for water along with my beer.

Highly recommend the Carne Guisada at this restaurant. The gravy is thick and spicy and the meat is tender. Also price in line with other entrees.

This was our first trip to the Alamo Cafe, we went with friends and it was a great time. There is evidently always a little bit of a wait, but you can watch the fresh tortillas being made right there and that is a very cathartic experience. The staff was all very friendly and nice, the food was good Tex Mex, and the tortillas were just great. The salsa was "ok", a bit too much heat without enough peppers / onions and other things, but that's just my personal preference. The house beans (their recommended specialty) were great, and everyone enjoyed their meal. Prices are reasonable as well.

GREAT SERVICE I was hesitant to eat there on our visit to San Antonio because the restaurant was so large. I assumed the service would be slow due to the large number of patrons. But boy was I surprised! Good food and ever greater service. Noemi S was our waiter and she did not disappoint. So nice to be around someone who is so full of joy.

Love the homemade tortillas they bring every table. I could make a meal out of those. The rest of the food is average. Salsa just tastes like pureed tomatoes. No real flavor. Did not care for the enchiladas. The puffy taco was alright. Service was not attentive. She never came back to see how we were doing or how the food was.

I drop in to San Antonio about once a year to visit family when I am taking a break from my many travels. The one place our family has made a tradition when I come home is the Alamo Cafe. There is a decent amount of parking with handicapped spaces in the front which is needed for my Mother. The place in general is handicap friendly. The exterior seems like a hacienda or a small mission. The interior is well done. One of the best jobs of decorating a place I have seen. They have the sky painted on the entrance ceiling. Little canals passing through the East side of the restaurant and several different rooms and areas, indoor and out, to have your dining experiences. The wait staff is OK. They are mostly what appears to be high school or college kids trying to make a little money so in that regard you are not going to get 5 star service. The kids will usually do their best though to take care of your needs. The place does get busy and on occasion you may find yourself waiting a few minutes but it is usually not long of a wait. The food in general for me has always been average. Most of my siblings feel the same way. There is nothing special about the food compared to some more authentic mom and pop places I have been to throughout the southwest that will blow your socks off. The food here really is "meh". Just this past trip my Mother herself who raves about the place commented that the food was average this time. In short if you need a place you can trust for a meal that wont disappoint then you can rely on Alamo Cafe. If you are looking to impress your discerning guests with true quality and flavorful tex-mex cuisine I might look elsewhere.

There is lots of competition for mexican food in San Antonio, but this is one of the best. It has a good atmosphere with friendly servers. The combo plates are large portions, fresh and always tasty!

Ordered the Street Taco Quesadilla and Half Appetizer Combo to go. Got tortillas, chips, and salsa too. Fajita meat in the quesadillas was fabulous. Really tender and full of flavor. Salsa had a really nice tomato flavor. And I’m the queso was really good. Lots of flavor. Dip you tortilla in for an extra special treat.

I used to love this place when I lived in San Antonio so I had to go back when we visited. It has changed significantly and seems to be more focused on volume with inexpensive prices versus food quality. Food was just ok but no where near what good Tex-Mex should be.

This restaurant not only has great food, we had the mix fajitas chicken and beef with shrimp for two! This was an excellent choice! Not only did we both leave full but had enough leftovers for Roger to have lunch the next day! It’s about a 12-15 minute drive from down area but well worth the trip.

I went to Alamo Cafe last week for a professional luncheon. I only had 4 selections to choose from, all carb-laden. Although I paid over $20 for my lunch, I could only eat the grilled chicken on the fajitas....beans and rice were thrown out. I don't believe there was a small side salad either. Unfortunately, they didn't offer to make any exceptions.

We've eaten here, everytime we make a trip to San Antonio, but our visit today, left us wondering if they just had a bad day, or if after 40yrs, they've run their course. We went at lunch on Friday. Not a long wait. Seating is spread out, so it makes for less tables. We were seated at at table that had not been cleaned. Still had food, water and the previous check on it. We thought they would come wipe the table, but we ended having to do it ourselves. Waitress was great. Kristin attended to every need we had. We had the fajitas, combo. They make their own tortillas, so they are always good. The fajitas were just average. The beef was dry and almost, jerky like. The chicken seemed to be moist. I know everyone can have a bad day, I just wish it wasn't on my day. I'm not one to complain unless it's just uneatable. With the cost of food, I felt a like we could have had better quality. We will skip the Alamo Cafe. Will look for a different Mexican eatery.

Went here on Christmas Eve and had an absolutely horrible time. First, they did not take reservations, so our party of 13 had to wait an hour upon arrival. Service was TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE and nearly ruined our Christmas Eve evening. The server was unbelievably slow starting with bringing drinks. Then the food took longer than it should have. A large party came in well after us, ate and left well before. The worst part was trying to get our checks. The waiter failed to identify we were finishing up and it was time to ask if we wanted our check. A family member had to get up and locate the waiter. He then comes by and says “im going to take their (another table) order and I’ll be right back. First of all, never mention you are doing something for another table first, especially if they had to locate you to ask for the check. Secondly, after waiting another 15 minutes, I personally went to the host stand to let them know of the problem, that we just needed our check. I asked to speak with a manager and the host just basically told the waiter. I could have done that. No manager ever came. No body in the restaurant cared AT ALL. It’s not what happened, it’s how it was handled. If the waiter was clearly trying and apologetic, I wouldn’t be writing this. He, the hostess and management couldn’t have CARED LESS. This experience with my family that I NEVER see on Christmas Eve was so bad that I will be contacting corporate.

Any and every time we're in San Antonio, we must visit the Alamo Cafe, right off of 281. They have remodeled the front entrance and added an outdoor patio and restaurant area that looks like it easily seats an additional 100 people, so nice for those busy weekends! We were there the day before Thanksgiving, so no crowds for us. We got adventurous and tried the Prickly Pear Margarita, frozen with a sugared rim. It was delicious, as was the chile con queso dip with meat and guacamole!

We went here for a family dinner. Poor service and the food was substandard. I got the chicken avocado salad and tortilla soup. The salad was dry as if I’d had been sitting all day long and had two slithers of a mini avocado. The tortilla soups was chicken broth with a tortilla covering it. This is the worst Mexican I have had.

Lots of Mexican food eateries in San Antonio and this one stands out. Very large eatery with multiple levels and outdoor as well. Lots of free parking but numbers of people of people so great that parking is at a premium when busy. Wait at these times is expected but not long. Menu varied with Mexican food as well as popular Texas foods like chicken fried steak. Excellent friendly service even when really busy. Very nice experience.

Seven of us for lunch. Each item was what we each expected and we each like our food. The place was a bit noisy though.

Homemade tortillas and food was made to order. Great service by all. We had a party of five and everyone was overly satisfied.

The food was great, but go for the half serve. It was so large I couldn't finish it. I don't regret anything though.

Not really authentic Mexican food but good none the less. The tortillas and salsa are worth the price of admission.

Heard about this place for years Very disappointing. Other than the flour tortillas Nothing authentic. Fried beans tasted like they were from a can, chicken Laredo was like eating a piece of wood. My business partner said the puffy tacos were tasteless. Would not revisit this one

Food and atmosphere were great. Great service too. It was a bit noisy during lunch hour, making it a bit challenging to have a business conversation, but it turned out ok.

Very good food!! The enchiladas had great flavor! Love the warm tortillas and fresh chips! The salsa was very good. Great atmosphere and cool interior decor! The only thing I didn’t care for was having to ask for a menu (I have poor vision). They encourage using the kiosk at the table to order from. I’m sure due to Covid.

The Alamo Cafe was recommended to us by a worker at The Embassy Suites Hotel, San Antonio Airport. My husband and I arrived at 4:00 Monday, February 6, 2023. The atmosphere was casual and family-style. We ordered the Chile Rellano dinner, the Southwestern Cobb Salad, and a Puffy Beef Taco. The best surprise was the hot tortillas delivered to our table. I recommend getting the hot queso dip to go with them. They were delicious! My husband had the Chile Rellano dinner. It was a large Chile Rellano, beans, and rice. He said the beans and rice were better than our local ones back home. The Chile Rellano was terrific. I ordered the Puffy Beef Taco and the Southwestern Cobb Salad. The salad was fresh, with chicken strips, black olives, cheese, tomatoes, and lettuce. It was large enough for two people to share. The Puffy Beef Taco was hot, and the tortilla was soft and delicious. We were too full to order dessert. The server was excellent and kept our drinks refilled.

We lived in San Antonio in the 1980's and were in town on vacation. I remembered the Alamo Cafe from our days here, and really looked forward to trying their legendary chicken-fried steak again. Absolutely terrific, and just as good as I remembered. I got to wash it down with a tall Shiner Bock beer, and added a couple of their delicious home made flour tortillas. Service was friendly and prompt. What a great lunch! It's busy, since it's so good, but we didn't wait long for anything.

Inferior quality food and lousy service. The Wait staff brought the meals and quickly left without asking us if we needed anything else. The servings were skimpy and the food flavor was marginal. My experience was not even close to what it was back in the 90's The Wait staff was jovial, upbeat, asked what else they could do. The food was plenty and delicious too. You left with a belly full, happy to be there and knowing I would gladly return. Mow the flavors fall flat and the portions are minimal. But since the flavors are mediocre, it's ok they don't serve so much. Quality ingredients and love for the customers. A passion for cooking, paying attention to cooking details.

The Alamo Cafe was busy at lunch time but we were seated quickly and service was good. There isn't a lunch menu which was surprising and it took awhile to read the large menu and determine what we wanted. Many choices. The chicken quesadillas were tasty, included small sides of tomatoes, sour cream and lettuce to put on the quesadillas. The salads as a meal were good sized and very fresh. My husband had enchiladas and he liked them. Fresh corn and flour tortillas are provided. The ice tea glasses are large which is great in the hot Texas heat.

The enchiladas, rice, beans, and sopapillas were delicious! The atmosphere was cheery, wall art and architecture was beautiful, and the water feature was so fascinating! I would have given 5 stars but an incident happened in which I had to clean up a container of wet tortillas that was put on our table. I don’t want the server to get in trouble for it, so I won’t detail what happened. Our server was so sweet and kind. I would eat there again if I ever visit San Antonio again.

Air vents are still dirty. The handicaped parking was moved from the front to the side. There is a side door but it has stairs and no handle on the outside. Instead you have to walk from the side the length of the restaurant. TRYING TO HIDE THE HANDICAPED PEOPLE IN THE BACK. Better choice if you have to have alamo cafe is to go to the one on Hwy 281. They have handicaped close to front.

I visit this location anytime I'm in San Antonio. The food is always tasty, and the service is consistent. Last time, I had cheese enchiladas, and they were good. The endless supply of chips and salsa is dangerous! :) Alamo Cafe can get crowded, so consider that when you plan to go there. It's good for families, kids or couples.

well fist off waited on drinks too long food was longer beer was flat..yuk wine is almost as thick as one of my fingers what a rip off then they forgot my order then burnt it when it came. They should just close down this is last time I go there they are just crud. .

My family and I went to Alamo Cafe for the first time in a long while yesterday and found the food ok at best. The tortillas chips were hard and cold, the enchiladas were bland, the rice was hard and tasteless and the puffy tacos were loaded with grease. To top it off, my son found a fruit fly in his fajitas. On the plus side, the tortillas were good, the guacamole was fresh and tasty and the waitress was attentive but we will not be visiting this restaurant again.

Is this the best place for Mexican/TexMex? Probably not but it is pretty stinking good. The beef fajitas my wife were a little salty but had really good flavor she loved them. The beef quesadilla the kids had was very good. I had the brisket tacos and a side puffy taco. The brisket was tender and nicely sauced very good. The puffy taco was outstanding....maybe because I’ve never heard/had one before. It’s a corn tortilla fried...become puffy then open faced filled like a tostada. I folded it in half and devoured it it definitely hit the spot with a super cold beer. Staff was very friendly. One negative is the computer pay station that sits upon the table. I know people love these because you can pay and leave without a word. For me I hate them, the bill is usually your last face to face chance to say thanks and let them know how they did. Don’t like using the cold computer survey exit approach.

Great Tex-Mex and cold margaritas. They make their own tortillas so they are always fresh, soft and warm. Their beef/chicken fajitas combo is my favorite fare here. We go about once a month to get our favorite. It will look like there are a lot of people when your arrive in the parking lot, but the place is huge and seating and service go pretty quickly. Enjoy!!

Took our family for a true Tex Mex dinner and not disappointed. From our margaritas to the homemade tortillas all was so well done. The cheese enchiladas are yummy. The chips and salsa were so tasty. We return here whenever we get back to San Antonio.

easy to order online (did it while out of state from Texas); food ready when we arrived (got email updates during the day). Fajitas were excellent(beef, chicken & shrimp). Chips and salsa were excellent. Highly recommend.

During this very stressful time in our nation, Alamo Cafe is "stepping up" with their take out service, curb side and delivery. They are providing jobs for their valued employees and making their customer's lives a little happier. They have always been a family favorite and will continue to be.

We go here every time we are in San Antonio and this time we went twice. My son loves the fajitas. It has a nice atmosphere. Can get loud at busy times.

One of the places I planned to visit on my visit here. I remember the fresh, hot tortillas. Of course, the service was very good as were the fajitas and queso dip. I like the atmosphere, food, service...all rolled into one. This is just like yesteryear when I used to visit San Antonio.

Went there this past week to eat with my wife and my nephew who was in town on business. First thing, the iced tea was off, poor flavor. My wife had tortilla soup and a something like a chalupa. She said it was the worst tortilla soup she has had in quite a while. Chalupa was nothing special. I had chicken quesadillas- they were decent, but nothing outstanding like the Alamo Cafe we were used to. Service was average.

First time I have been there - the food was good (didn't try the margarita though). This was a private party for a fairly large group - we were there for three hours celebrating a 80th birthday (family member). Felt the staff did a very good job dealing with this large group.

Been here dozens of times and it always hits the spot. The tortillas have been awarded "best in San Antonio" multiple times and they live up to the hype. I always spring for the cheese enchiladas and my wife rotates between chili rellano, chicken ensalada and tortilla soup. Great fajitas for two and the queso is my favorite in town. The beer is cold and the margaritas are a nice option too. The service can be a bit slow sometimes but it's always packed so it's understandable. The new bar add-on is a great addition to the restaurant. I'll always have a spot in my "tummy" for Alamo Cafe!

Very little flavor & zero soul in anything at this restaurant. Even the extra spicy michelada was bland. This restaurant is always very busy. I go there only because others choose it for social gatherings.

I'm reviewing a restaurant. If you follow my posts then you are not surprised. This time it is a Tex-Mex place. The experience all started when I walked in. The hostess was immediately helpful and nice. She gave me a choice on where I wanted to sit. That was pretty neat, but it was most likely due to the restaurant not being full. I went right before the lunch rush (11:45 when I arrived). I was immediately helped by Nate. A fast, friendly, knowledgable, and polite waiter. Ask for him if he still works there. I ordered a queso. It was slightly spicy. Really nice! Although the only problem was it was watery. Not a big deal. It was still tasty. The restaurant gives you tortillas and chips. The tortillas are made there. You can smell them cooking. That is a bad thing. They are so good and warm that you want to just eat those. Yes. They refill them. I ordered the street tacos. They are not the usual ones that you get because there is a sauce on them. That does not mean they are not good, but it is different. I like different. The dish is served with charro beans, Pico, onion, cilantro, and lime. A great combo. I would get the street tacos again in a heartbeat. The beans were flavorful. They were not spicy. They come in their own bowl so it does not soak the rest of the food. They also have chips y salsa. Yes those are refilled too. The salsa is fine, but I would order the queso. I did not have to wait long for my food, and the food tasted fresh and hot.

My famuy and I visited on a Satuday for early dinner. The hostess asked my how many seats we needed, she told her for 5. The hostess told me they did not have a table for 5 and turned away to give the menus to the seating hostess. They sat us at a booth, for 4 and placed 5 menus down. It was about 3 minutes before out waiter came by. We asked if we could get a chair for the 5th person and he brought one. He took our drinknm order and about 8 minutes later we got our drinks, then our waiter took off to help other tables without asking if we were ready to order or if we wanted appetizers. 8 or so minutes later the waiter came back and took our order. Food came out about 10 minutes later, but my wife and i shared and our order was incomplete. So we ate what we had until about 5 minutes later when the rest of the order came out. Everyone elses food was good. The beef fajitas were a bit tough, the rice was hard and room tempature. It was very busy, so not sure if that is a reason for the poor servuce and not so great $ 25 fajitas. This is the second bad experience for us within a few months. Probably not going back.

What a great restaurant totally authentic food preparation tortillas are made in house you can see them being made as you walk in Lots to choose from on their extensive menu. Enjoy

Had lunch here today. Tortillas are really great . Personally I order something Tex-Mex and the Chicken Fried Steak. The beans are really good .. Stuffed Jalapeno's not bad either . Finish it off with a Margarita !!! FYI I don't recommend the I 10 location .

A bustling place on a Friday night! Even though the restaurant was packed, our wait wasn't too long. Our server Robyn was quick and efficient. I had the poblano soup and it was delicious - I'd definitely order it again. We went for the queso and it was wonderful, as were the homemade tortilla chips and tortillas. Saw other people buying tortillas to take home. The prickly pear frozen margarita was great!

If you are looking for bland and tasteless food, this is your kind of place. The best part of the meal was the tortillas. We were very disappointed and could not even report it.. saw our waitress one time.. Definitely will be removed from our go to places when we come to town.

Crappy management bad food. Management's does not care about there customers.. will never come here again. Don't come

We were staying at the Comfort Suites within walking distance. This was recommended. Absolutely great place. VERY reasonable. Huge, can sit 600 but we got right in both nights. Big variety of TX-MX and country favorites. Service was great. Pick a table or booth. Doing so well they are expanding. They have combo plates and since I'm no expert on MX food I picked dinner #2. So good I got it both nights.

I have heard of this place forever. What a let down. Our friend called to “get on the list” for a 545 table about an hour in advance. When we arrived at 540 they were at the hostess desk and things didn’t sound good. They didn’t have him on the list. Said he was concerned when as he was hanging up he heard the girl on the phone say “how do I.....”. So we went on the list with the assurance it won’t be long. 30 minutes later 3 or 4 parties of 7 were seated. Friends wife goes back and again. We aren’t on the list. After the manager is at the desk we are finally seated. They got their revenge, we got Vanessa and she wasn’t happy about a damn thing. Service was terrible. Ask for honey for the tortillas, she brought a pestal type bowl of honey. No spoon. When asked for a spoon she looke really put out and told my husband “most people just pour it out”. He insisted on a spoon. I ordered a shrimp avacoda salad. After searching for th avocado I waved down the bus person and asked her to send Vanessa over. She immediately found Vanessa , pointed to our table. Vanessa looked our way and went and filled every tea/water glass in her section and finally found her way over. I asked if the salad wasn’t supposed to have avocado? She returned with three SLIVERS of avocado. My friend and I both looked in the bowl, at Vanessa and said really. She asked if we wanted more, I assured her thank did. I understand that she didn’t get the avocado but she damn sure knew that she had less that happy customers so she should have told the kitchen “more”. Oh, forgot about the queso. Ordered a large queso for 7, she brought one large bowl, no plates, no spoon. Vanessa was damn n at refusing to bring plates when about 3 of us insisted. If you manage to get your table and get Vanessa. Leave. Won’t go back and the food wasn’t bad.

As a former regular I now live out of state and would sell my soul for their salsa recipe. Any takers?

The food was very good and brought out in only 12-15 minutes even though the restaurant was very busy. Good chips and salsa and we couldn't stop eating the flour tortillas. Overall the meal was inexpensive for two people. We will definitely be back!

I liked the old-style neon sign out in front of the restaurant, and definitely loved the fact that they made their own tortillas! The restaurant is fairly sizeable inside, with an open-air design to the entire place (although it wasn't that noisy, which is good). The food is standard tex-mex fare as far as variety goes; I ordered the fajitas, and they were flavorful, with a large order. All in all, this was a good lunch, and would definitely return.

We had not been to Alamo cafe in many many years as living out of the country. Have to say the good was exceptional and the service was very good. Would definitely recommend to anyone. Bring your appetite though as portions are big!!!! Very very good

Went to have dinner with a friend. Due to the remodel, the awe effect of the sky ceiling of the restaurant is gone. Such a shame since it is such a nice feature of the building. We were on our way to see a movie so to avoid the wait, we decided to sit outside. The hostess tried to seat us at a table covered in leaves then moved us to another table. Kids were playing in the open space next to the patio and they came running up to our table a couple of times. The waitress took a long while before coming to greet us and take our drink order. We ordered sweet tea and a frozen margarita. She came back with an unsweet tea and a margarita on the rocks. She replaced the margarita. She took our food order. I saw her write it down. We ordered enchiladas and chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes and green beans. After a lengthy wait, another waiter came out with our order. The chicken fried steak had fries instead of potatoes. He came back with the side of mashed potatoes. And the world famous tortillas? We never got any. The place is not what it used to be. Parking is difficult to find close to the entrance. I had a line of cars behind me as I waited for a couple to finally leave their parking space. As we left, cars were lined up again as the area by the entrance gets clogged easily. Not inclined to go back after this experience.

Since we had been here before this visit we just had dessert and coffee. The sopapillas were wonderful as were the apple espanadas. The problem with this place is the acoustics. When full of people you can barely hear across the table. It is very interesting to watch the cooking area where they make fresh tortillas.

Lots of Mexican food in San Antonio and Alamo does not stand out except the home made tortillas brought to your table on arrival. Tortilla chips and very average salsa brought as well. Although an extensive menu, this is solid Tex Mex with typical “fiesta food” abundant in this area but not traditional “Mexican”. No reservations needed on a Monday night. Pleasant service throughout our meal. We had Eight in our party and no raves but no negatives. My experience was poblano soup- very good; fish taco flavorful and regular size; chicken enchilada, while meaty, the sauce was like tomato soup, poor. In fact every item lacked seasoning. I found Alamo Cafe average food, average value and good service.

We visited here for a late dinner with friends. The place was still very busy. My wife and I had fish tacos. They were ok; not the best we've ever had. Enjoyed the chips and salsa and the fresh corn tortillas. They are great. We would probably visit again.

Wow! Has this place fallen. Food was medicore, at best and to top it off - it was COLD! Since it took soooooo long to get it, in the first place, I wasn't about to send it back. Server wasn't very efficient. Just an extremely disappointing experience and the worst I've ever had, here (and we have been here, many, many times). Probably not on our list to eat at, again. Rather go to Chuy's.

First time visit was a success and we will definitely go back. Our food was really good across the board, and the 3 of us each ordered something different. To minor things that prevented me from giving 5 stars: the meat for the fajitas when they were brought out were lukewarm (we got the steak shrimp and chicken) and our second drink order took so long to get to the table that we were about 3/4's of the way done with our meal before they got there. Other than that, the staff was great, everyone was friendly and smiling, fun atmosphere. We will be regulars here going forward.

After patronizing another Mexican restaurant for several years, we decided to try Alamo Cafe. Service was fine, my chimichangas were terrific, but the beef fajitas were not very good. Dish lacked the grilled peppers and onions which are the usual accompaniment, and the marinade was weak.

Was feeling hungry and was running errands with the family. Saw the Alamo Cafe and decided to stop. Had not been here in a while. There was no waiting in line and were seated pretty fast. Got there before 5:00 pm. The waitress was very friendly and courteous and took our order. The chips and salsa was mild and not too hot. We got some hot flour tortillas before our order came in. They were great and with butter it was even better. Our food was hot and we were very satisfied with our dinner. I ordered the Carne guisada and it was great and a bit spicy. I would come back again as they have a great menu selection.

Arrived at 8:00...told 10 min... Got a drink at bar...After 20 min went to check and we aren't on list... Finally seated...and 10 min later placed our appetizer & drink order...got drinks at 8:45 and placed our food order...Finally got our food at 9:10...wife's enchilada was cold...food was OK, but not up to normal Alamo Cafe standard.

Went with a large group and the waiter was great. I didn't get his name but he was very good at keeping up with everyone's drinks which a couple people our group are hard to keep up with. He also made every effort to assist with any requests and suggested things that would assist some in our party to take leftovers with them as they wanted to. Great food and good staff. Well worth a stop.

This is a great restaurant to eat tex mex. You get freshly made tortillas & tortilla chips at your table. You can watch them make the tortillas right there. The staff is friendly, professional & knowledgeable. The ceiling in the lobby lightens & darkens every ten minutes or so like the Texas sky. The food is great! You can order the food to go if you want.

Chris our server was very friendly and courteous. Our drink glasses never went empty. The bottled beer was ice cold!! All of our food was hot when delivered to our table which was really nice. The corn tortillas were very good. The food was all very tasty. The restaurant is very clean as are the bathrooms. You will not be disappointed.

Great atmosphere. One of the coolest settings a restaurant could have. The food is just classic TexMex with a bit of American home cooking. We stop by every time we are in town. I wish they still had one in the Dallas area.

Loved Chimichanga made with Fajita Chicken followed by Chips and Salsa. Fresh Avacado with all other sides on side helped me avoid most of Sour Cream while using avocado and salsa. Great food.

Great for groups! They can accommodate large groups. We had 10 and everyone ordered what ever they wanted and they got everything correct. It was delicious. I had a combo #2. It had guacamole, a taco of your voice and an enchilada. It was great and my husband likes their chicken fried steak and enjoyed every bite. It was served with mashed potatoes, gravy and green beans. We will all go back.

We’ve visited this place several times over the years and found the quality has declined, especially this last visit. The service was very inconsistent and food order was incorrect for two of us. The food tasted ok, but the fajitas were just warm, even on the “hot plate”, and the tortillas were delivered to our table about 10 minutes before the rest of the food. I would have rated our previous visit a 3, and it has went downhill since then. I’m sure that was our last visit...time to find another place for Mexican food.

We ate at Alamo Cafe on San Pedro twice during a recent trip to San Antonio. We had the chicken fried steak & it was delicious. Second time, we had the panchos with beef. They were so good. Both times, we had the flan for dessert - great!

We have been to Alamo Cafe several times. We used to love it but the food wasn't nearly as good this time. I had an enchilada and a puffy taco. The enchilada was ok, nothing to write home about. The puffy taco was greasy and almost impossible to eat because of that. We did love the fresh tortillas. The service was just ok. We had to ask for every refill on drinks and chips. Nothing was automatic. There are so many choices in San Antonio. I think this one won't be on our list next time

First of all our server DJ was great. He has waited on us before and knows how to take care of the customer. Very knowledgeable and friendly. The enchiladas, chalupa, rice and beans were delicious. You get plenty of salsa and chips. The corn tortillas are also delicious. The beer is ice cold which is nice. The restaurant is very clean as are the bathrooms. You will not be disappointed in this restaurant

Great food, very busy server was great paid attention to my 10yr daug didn't have to ask for anything.. tipped 30%

We timed our arrival to be just after they opened so we could avoid the lunch rush. Our timing was perfect. We were seated immediately. This place is huge and was really beyond our expectations. Our server Brandy took great care with us. My reviews of Mexican/Hispanic restaurants usually center around the fajitas and this time is no different. Overall, my fajitas experience here comes in at number 3 overall. The thing that kept it from number 2 was the lack of decent green peppers and I’ll leave it at that. The tortillas were absolutely fresh and delicious. The salsa had a nice depth of flavor and a little kick. The birria queso was creamy and rich while the steak was perfectly cooked. The overall experience was very good. I had a couple margaritas that were tasty and put a smile on my face. I will not hesitate to pass along my recommendations to our traveling friends to visit when in San Antonio.

Alamo Cafe was excellent as usual. We always eat here when we are in town. The service we received from the staff was really good and all the food we had was excellent. We will be back the next time we are in town.

I’m so excited to be back in San Antonio because I can get my Alamo cafe fix. Great food friendly staff and omg, the tortillas!

We have been eating at Alamo Cafe since 1993 and this will, more than likely, be our last meal. The service was horrendous and the meal sub-par. The server could have cared less that he got our order wrong and the resolution came from another wait staff. The fajita meat was dry and with little flavor and we continually had to ask for our drinks to be refilled. Very disappointed as this used to be my favorite.

Worst Tex mex I’ve had in SA Tourist lure terrible service Better food at any local taco spot Cheaper too Avoid

The Alamo Cafe is unique in not only do they give you chips and salsa but also homemade flour tortillas that are fresh and warm. My wife and I had the beef and chicken fajitas that were tender but could have been a little more seasoned. The rice and beans were exceptional along with the guacamole and pick. The mixer margarita was very tasty. We finished up with the Flan with caramel sauce which was delicious. The service was excellent and we never needed to ask for anything as or waiter was always ahead of us. It is always a treat to eat at the Alamo Cafe.

Great Texas menu with a mix of Mexican and southern. You get chips and salsa plus flour and corn tortillas. The flour tortillas are made right in front of you and delicious. Also great salad options. It gets busy at lunch. Get there early like 11:30. Two locations are convenient. Chicken Laredo is my favorite.

Really love the service here. I’m especially happy with how the kitchen will ALWAYS make it my way. They leave the squash out of my veggie fajitas when I ask.

We had a large group (14), so I'm willing to cut this place a little slack. But one person waited over 15 minutes longer than the rest of us for dinner. Most of us were done with our dinners by the time that he was served. And he ordered the same thing that several others had ordered. I don't think that it was our server's fault, but there didn't seem to be anyone who thought that this was odd. It would have been nice to have a manager apologize, but there was no one in sight.

This is a regular place for us when visiting San Antonio. Upon entering the restaurant, your immediately sat at your table. If waiting, the wait always seems short. Service was excellent and food was delicious. Tortillas are homemade and awesome. Food was quickly served and our waiter was constantly appearing before drinks were half empty. Chips and salsa were constantly resupplied and fresh. Food was hot and tasted great. Highly recommended

I know this place is very popular but its not one of our favorite places to get enchiladas. We like the tex-mex and they use an enchilada sauce that is not chili con based. Should have just gotten the fajitas.

Met a friend and his son for lunch. Beef fajitas were very tasty. Guacamole, rice, refried beans were good. The homemade flour tortillas were delicious. I enjoyed lunch. Large venue. Friendly service.

We were in San Antonio the first week-end of Fiesta and Mexican food sounded really good on a cool evening. We all had margaritas and they were really disappointing! Mostly fluffy ice with very little flavor or kick! I substituted a puffy taco on my combination dinner, but it wasn't like puffy tacos that I've had in San Antonio before. Disappointing! The enchiladas on my dinner were very good though! We all enjoyed the chips and the very tasty salsa, and the freshly made tortillas were wonderful! My husband really enjoyed the street tacos! We were seated very quickly surprisingly - not even enough time to order margaritas. Our waiter took our drink orders as soon as we were seated and our food was served promptly. We hadn't been to this restaurant in a number of years and were pleasantly surprised by all of the improvements on the facility - it's stunning!

Stopped for dinner after leaving work at Lackland AFB. I always try to stop here whenever I am in the area. This has always been an excellent restaurant and have enjoyed this place each time I have come here. Food and service were both excellent! A must stop if you are in the area.

Had a good meal here about 18 months ago so we decided to try it again. We were seated promptly. The waiter was very polite and food was prepared and delivered quickly. Unfortunately, it was not all that tasty. I had the shrimp, chicken, and beef fajitas and my wife had a combination dinner. Will probably not come here again.

Came here on a recommendation from a local and pleased we did. We arrived at about 3:30 on a Thursday and there were cars all over its parking lot. Thankfully, it is a very large restaurant that can accommodate a good number of people between their multiple rooms of tables and booths, upstairs dining area, in addition to outdoor offerings. They bring chips and salsa to the table, as most Tex-Mex do, and they were good. However the real surprise for these newbies was that they also brought freshly made tortillas to our table. They were REALLY good and convenient to use for cleaning our plates later. My son ordered their Brisket Taco Plate ($14.29) and was very pleased. I chose to go with Dinner #3 ($9.79) since it said on the menu that it was a favorite. It included two enchiladas, a tostada with queso, rice and beans. It was good, but I would probably try other things if visiting again. My wife selected Mushroom and Spinach Enchiladas ($9.99) that came with rice and black beans. She loved it, and I would agree as she let me try a bite. Overall, grateful for the recommendation as we enjoyed our meals and would return if in the area.

Visiting San Antonio, stopped for dinner. Restaurant is shabby and dirty on the inside. Our waiter did not know anything about specials I saw on board in lobby and did not offer to find out when I asked about a dish. Brought our drinks in a styrofoam cup with little ice. We ordered fajitas. The beef fajitas were so dry and chewy you could not eat them. Chicken fajitas were burnt. We had to continually remind waiter of forgotten items...like plates! I do not recommend eating here.

house margaritas are bad, food is okay. Next time I want Mexican food, I'll go somewhere else.most Mexican restaurants in San Antonio have great house margaritas.

Large restaurant, perfect for our group of 30. Food was delicious and plates were filled with bountiful portions. Homemade tortillas and the hot sauce was the Bomb. Our waiter was a little overwhelmed with all the orders, but did fine. Will certainly return when we visit San Antonio again.

Nice and modern restaurant with ample menú and delicious margarita jars. Rangel of specialities, somos, tex mex and dinners to satisfy all apetites and personal preferences. Appettizers upfront and kind service who listens to questions and provide helpful answers. Ability to extend order while seated so that dinner can flow without having to make new órders as time goes. Young clients, business grups, friends and families. All can find a good fit in this restaurant. Not an exquisite cuisine but very competent. Excelent valué for money in all angles.

This place will conquer the cravings of a couple that have different tastes. My wife had the street tacos and they were excellent. I had the chicken fried steak which was also very good. Service was second to none. Only complaint was that the chips were the harder variety and not as tasry

Needed a quick lunch with a Tex-Mex flavor - we were lucky the wait was not too long. This is a busy place with lots of seating. We've eaten here before and always had good service and good food. We happened to be here during Spring Break; our server stated that she had been very busy; she was cheerful and chatty, but not too much so. Had a pleasant lunch.

The best chicken fried steak I have had in awhile!! The home made tortillas were awesome too! I didn't have the mexican food.

So my family and I went to eat at what use to be one of our favorite Mexican Restaurants! My son is in the USAF & is visiting home and really wanted to have a great meal! Our waiter Nick was not friendly with our group of 12 at all! When we asked if they offered a Military Disc he responded really rude. As a US citizen he could be trained on being a little more respectful with a simple response instead of the flat out no, we don't! He also took a very long time to get our drinks! When we ordered our drinks he brought them all on the same sized cups but being that we ordered a kids meal as soon as he learned that he took the tea back to get a smaller cup i told him that he is just going to have to make more trips this way and he responded that he would... well, he didn't. He also failed to give our table your warm tortillas after asking him like 3 x's ! He did not bring them out till a minute or two before the food was brought out! He was very short on his answers and making faces after each request. Then the food was brought out and my plate which was Carne Guisada had more fat and gravy than meat! Rice was dry!!! My husband said that he would have rather cooked than eat the food that we had that was cold snd spicy. There were 3 plates of Carne Guisada and 3/3 were all bad! And everyone in our group could not stop talking about the rudeness of our waiter Nick and the attention to great service & food that Alamo Cafe use to be. So sad!

Alamo is one of the number one picks for locals. It has a nice atmosphere with both inside and outside dining. Love their relleno, flour tortillas, chicken fried steak, and their salads. Enchiladas are just so-so and fajitas are good, but not best in town. Kids love their queso.

Alamo cafe is the first stop we make when we visit San Antonio. The tortillas are made on site and smell absolutely heavenly. Whatever you order is made better with fresh tortillas. Even the tortilla soup, with chunks of chicken and slices of avocado, makes for a real Texas treat. No dressing needed for salads, just use their amazing salsa. We love Alamo Cafe!

Whenever I come to San Antonio I try to make it to Alamo Cafe. I have been here a number of times over the years and have never been disappointed. Food was excellent, service was excellent and I certainly like the remodeled appearance. What a great place! A must stop if you are in the area.

Been here a few times and every time is always a great experience. The food is delicious, the service is great and the environment is awesome. The employees are fantastic and welcome you and bid adieu when you leave. Tortillas are incredible and all the portions are awesome, definitely will be back.

environment are so fresh and good all the time and workers are so kindly, charming i have passed through their page i realize that everything is available at alamo cafe,,i really like and i give 5 stars.

Went there for lunch accompanied by family. Frank was our server; he was on the spot with making sure 3 tables were taken care of simultaneously. Great job!

I had not eaten here for many years. It was still just as good as i remember and it is busy. So plan on a long wait unless you get there early.

They are known for their homemade tortillas and they do not disappoint. Beef fajitas are very flavorful. Beans are great. Rice is not good. Chips, salsa and queso were great. The service was great and quick seating.

We had not been to Alamo Café in over five years and it did not disappoint. The food is still delicious and hot! I recommend the Puffy Tacos and be sure to eat one of the fresh made tortillas when they are brought to the table. The tortillas are being made in the front of the restaurant as you enter the building. This is an excellent meal at a very reasonable price. In addition the facility has been updated and outfitted with flat screen televisions to make sure you do not miss the latest sporting events.

We have been eating at this restaurant for decades - this was the last time! The service was extremely slow, non-attentive, and failed to deliver tortillas or refill chips. Found a manager to get help with chips and tortillas. One tortilla warmer for a large 7-person table. Contacted the manager again when food did not arrive. The food finally arrived and the sizzling chicken fajita skillet actually had charcoal pieces lying by the meat - see photo. The pico de gallo was non-existent and unripe tomatoes. Contacted the manager for a third time and he agreed the charcoal was unacceptable - replaced the chicken and comped the fajitas. It was about one hour too late to fix this horrible experience. There are a million Mexican restaurants in San Antonio - for goodness sake, go to one of them.

Beef enchilada my husband ordered was good, and I'm not usually an enchilada fan. The fish taco I ordered was very fishy tasting (not good) and I had to send it back. Server understood and promptly removed it from our bill. The other taco I ordered (I can't remember which) was good. Chips were ok but the salsa was too spicy for me.

Service was amazing. Rosie was so very attentive to the group, total of ten people. Everyone had a wonderful time.

The flour tortillas are real good. The decor is cheesy San Antonio. The fish tacos, soup, beans, and rice were very very bland

Can't leave San Antonio, without taking back home some homemade tortillas from Alamo Cafe. The fajitas and queso are also great!

I love this place I have been here before. This is a great location and restaurant. I love their food. This is a great place for special occasions.

Atmosphere was authentic Mexican and it was very crowded with people. Our group was upstairs on a balcony(enclosed) but we were able to ride the service elevator. This helped accommodate my wife since she has a hard time climbing stairs.

This is good, solid Tex-Mex food. The salsa is excellent and not too hot, perfect for those out-of-towners who aren't ready for something as hot as Texans might be used to. The chicken-fried steak is big and tasty. The beef fajita panchos (like nachos with beef fajita meat) are very good and a half order is enough for most people. The chips they bring to the table automatically (with salsa) are warm and salty and the tortillas, made on-site, are awesome! The rice and beans are good, as well as their crispy beef tacos and enchiladas. The decor is pretty and atmosphere friendly. Expect a short wait if going at peak times like noon and supper time, especially on Sundays.

Attended A party at the Alamo Cafe. I ordered the Sizzling fajitas plate and I got the fajitas plate without the sizzle!! The fajitas were served lukewarm, the fajitas were not trim, and some of the fajitas were tough to chew. I tried the tortilla soup and it was bland and watered down. The best part of the meal was the tortillas, but that not enough to get me to come back.

My husband and I go for Mexican food every Thursday. Our neighborhood restaurant was closed for Halloween so why not Alamo cafe. We each had tortilla soup & split order of beef fajita Panchos. Service was horrible & restaurant wasn't 1/2 full. Our waitperson didn't bring us coffee refills until 30 min after we asked. Tortilla soup is way overpriced for what you get. Then to add insult to injury 15 minutes after we got home we both got very SICK! NEVER AGAIN

I've been coming here since the 90s...well actually they used to be on San Pedro so not this exact location, but for a long time! I love this place. We go about once a week because my son can play on their beautiful lawn, we can have the best tortillas and I love their vegetable fajitas. This place is a staple in our family. The service has been on and off since covid but that doesn't deter us:)

How can Alamo Cafe have a guy like Rene as their manager/host/greeter? He doesn’t smile. He didn’t say hello. He did ask, “How many?” When I tried lightening up his mood, he just continued to scowl. I asked if I could have a booth...he scowled. Then after he sat me in the direct sun and I asked my waiter to let me move, Rene stopped in his tracks, stared at me, then looked where he sat me previously, then stared at me, then back to the previous table...this went on for an agonizing (kinda like this review) 10 seconds! He finally asked, “Did you move?” Uh, yeah. The waiter moved me. Then he turned and scowled (mumbled). What a butthead. This is supposed to be their leader? Doug was a great waiter or I would’ve rated one star. Oh yeah, and the quesadilla was soaking wet with grease. And I had the veggie quesadilla!

This was our welcome meal...timed our door dash order so we'd be in the room when food arrived. No one had complaints other than they forgot cutlery 🤦🏻♀️ I loved the chicken poblano soup. Mi familia loved their enchiladas, beef fajita tacos, and davy dip!

Ordered a family meal today and it came within 30 minutes to my house. We had the enchiladas and crunchy taco family meal all beef with beans and rice. The sides were very small and the ground beef was pretty salty even in my davy dip. Crunchy tacos was made below average and could have got the same thing from jack n the box for cheaper. Enchiladas were ok but nothing special either. Don’t know if their taking a lot of orders or got minimum people working due to the virus but I wasn’t happy with the quality of the food and wasn’t worth $64 including the tip. I doubt I’ll try again or maybe we ordered the wrong thing.

Went here last Saturday after a local athletic event. Yes, we had a very large party. The restaurant fit everyone in, even if squeezed into a corner. Not sure why they couldn't open the area next to the bar and use some heaters. That would allow more space for more clients. Anyway, we were assigned one waiter for the party of at least 40-50 people. I'm not sure what his name was, but he was very efficient, considering he was pretty much the only one helping us. We were asked about drink orders, which was good and we were served many refills of chips and salsa. My issue was the fact that my dish was the last dish to come out at my table. My dish (soup and salad, mind you), came AFTER all other eight diners at my table were finished. I thought surely I would be compensated in some way for the complete lack of service, but no...no compensation on the bill. I don't care whose fault it is, but I do think a good manager would have discounted or made the one dinner completely free. However, not wanting to make a scene, my husband paid and left a generous tip. The waiter did work hard and it was a difficult situation with everyone paying separately and with kids sitting separate from their parents. The waiter was very responsive to adjusting bills, just not for the extremely late dinner. Except for the fact that we went with a large group, we would not come back to this restaurant. The food is mediocre at best and not representative of real Mexican food. Relying only on its past reputation, not its current state of poor management.

If you are in San Antonio and you want a true Tex-Mex experience this is the place for you. Alamo Cafe is a true South Texas gym, with fresh Tex-Mex food at its finest. I love their chips and salsa and their queso is to die for. We've had birthday parties, a rehearsal dinner and many family functions at this wonderful establishment. Flour tortillas are homemade right here in front of you. The service is outstanding. It's a family must visit for us!

Lived in SA in the late 80's and used to eat at Alamo Cafe often. Great food for a reasonable cost. Was in town with my son and we stopped for dinner. Fajitas are still great, great salsa, tortillas, tea and service. You feel at home here.

We came here for lunch. We were promptly greeted by the hostess who offered us a table right away. The table and the cushioned seats were still dirty from prior patron. I asked the waitress to be seasted elsewhere who then delegated this task to one of the managers. The manager grabbed the menus and proceeded to seat us at a different table which turned out to be as dirty as the first one. We waited on him to clean it with the help of another person. Our waiter; Eric, was very slow... it took several minutes to get water and several more minutes to bring salsa and then he was absent for a long period of time... We placed our order upon his return. After a long, long wait we finally got our fajita order. Just a couple of observations which I hope management take into consideration: 1- Please provide your staff with clean towels to clean tables with... maybe even Lysol wipes instead. 2- Please instruct your staff to remove such towels from their rear pockets... this is very unsanitary and unsightly. I personally won't be back and can't recommend it... there are way many other TexMex restaurants to chose from.

We stopped at Alamo Cafe for lunch and had an wonderful experience! Our server kept up with our drinks and timed our appetizer and lunch perfectly. The food was hot and fresh, we had great dining experience.

What a great place for lunch. The ambiance is awesome and the service is excellent. We enjoyed Corwin as our server who had a great sense of humor. My choice was the Carne Guisada which was amazing. Get there early because the place is very popular.

No trip to San Antonio is ever complete for me without visiting the Alamo Cafe. Nowhere else have I ever found flour tortillas like they serve here. You can watch them being made while you wait for your table. Once seated, they bring nachos and dip, and a container of flour tortillas. They are to die for. They are hot, THICK, and oh so tasty! Oh, and the other food is excellent, too. I have just never had a tortilla like they serve here. This is a great restaurant for so many more reasons, like the great decor, and the excellent service. I love this place!

Food quality is very inconsistent. Some days it's excellent. Other days it sucks with queso the texture of water, refried beans more like runny squashed bean soup, and food way over salted. I order delivery and they're running about 50/50 good/bad. It might be better dine in where you can return the food and order something else. I've given them 7 months now, with no improvement. Time for me to find somewhere else to order from.

I really expected more from this restaurant and was left disappointed. The food, beverages, and service were sub par. The hostess was nice and friendly. The tortilla chips were stale. It took 20 min for us to be acknowledged by the server. 10 minutes for water to reach the table. Luckily the food came out fast.. 35 minutes later. Well... that should of been a clue. Food was cold. Beverage order was taken incorrectly. Fish was very metallic tasting. Chicken tenders, nuggets unpalatable. We spent 2.5 hr at the restaurant with a tired baby. On the plus side the interior was nice. Unfortunately, I would not recommend this restaurant.

This is one of my usual stops for lunch when I visit San Antonio. One of the things I like most about it is its consistency. Always a good meal prepared the same way every time! Staff was friendly and the restaurant is sporting a new expansion with more seating, a bar, and covered patio. Great Tex-Mex!

This place never fails us. I had a taco salad and my husband had enchiladas. they were very good. Also the tamales are excellent!

Alamo Cafe is a favorite restaurant for Tex-Mex is San Antonio. They serve good Tex-Mex with the best tortillas all at a reasonable cost. They recently upgraded their entrance with much needed seats for those waiting for a table. . The menu also changed a little bit. However, the staples were there and of course, fresh chips, tortillas and salsa were brought to us as we sat down. The atmosphere is family friendly. Our food was brought to us quickly and it was very good as usual. My husband had a cerveza while I enjoyed a great margarita. Still a great restaurant !

I used the online system to order my family's dinner so I cannot speak to atmosphere or wait staff. When I got home we realized that one of the tostadas and one taco was missing from the order. My wife had elected to add queso to one of her enchiladas for an additional fee. She did not get the queso. The a la carte tamale for $3.50 was an embarrassment. Needless to say, this was not what I was expecting. Save your money, fast food would have been a tastier choice.

If you're looking for good, consistent, classic Tex Mex with great prices and friendly service, look no further than the Alamo Cafe on San Pedro (281 North)! In addition, the Patron Margaritas are delicious...I'll take a 20 oz please! :)

We revisited Alamo Cafe. Still no signs telling customers where handicapped parking is located. It is NOT IN THE FRONT BUT ON THE SIDE NEAR THE BACK. We went inside and ate in the booths in the bar. Looked up at ceiling it Still has moldy black air grills. CANNOT SEE ANY IMPROVEMENT WITH FACILITY BUT SERVICE WAS BETTER.

We tried to fine a place to park. They took away handicapped parking. But left special parking for pick up. The air vents were dirty and full of black mold. See photo Food was ok. Didn't get tortillas until we asked 3 for them. Better places to eat.

This is our go to Mexican restaurant when friends come visit from out of town. We were seated right away although it was pretty busy. They give you plenty of chips and salsa and will give you more of you ask. The corn tortillas are hot and tasty. The enchiladas and chalupa are very good as are the rice and beans. The food comes to your table nice and hot. Mike our server was very friendly and courteous. The restaurant is very clean as are the bathrooms. You will not be disappointed in this restaurant.

The best thing in this huge restaurant is the fresh tortillas. Drinks, chips & salsa were OK. Don't get the sangria. Margarita was good. Tamale was dry. Grilled fish taco and chile relleno were quite good. Michelle was the best. She gave great recommendations.

Good time for large group - pitcher of margs and chips and salsa - great street tacos served ready to eat and hot! Had separate checks for large group of people - 20. Katelyn was our waitress and she was fantastic! Will always go back when in San Antonio!

I had a house margarita, frozen. They are really clearing out the well liquors for that drink. I would rate it as a 1. For dinner, I had the veggie enchiladas with rice and beans. The veggies were basically raw. The rice was no better than Knorr’s Spanish rice. The beans lack flavor including salt. While I am only visiting and will likely never to return even if it was a good place, this one should be a hard pass.

Great place if you're in SA! Tons of great food choices. You have to try this place! We love going here every time we visit.

Back in San Antonio for work. Decided to hit one of my old faves. Didnt disappoint. Food was simply outstanding. Drinks were strong and well done.

We brought the family here for legendary brisket tacos and the Alamo cafe did not disappoint. It was spectacular as usual . Thanks Alamo cafe.

If you want the equivalent of a fancy taco bell, only not as good, this is the place for you! If you want authentic and exceptional mexican cuisine, there are a multitude of terrific restaurants in San Antonio. This is not one of them. Our daughter in law, who has the worst taste in restaurants wanted to go here - I hadn't been in a number of years. It did not fail to disappoint. The highlights. They brought me the wrong dish which I decided to keep. It was mediocre. Most disgusting were the kids meal chicken nuggets, a mushy mess of god only knows what chicken components. Their taste was as bad as their texture. Do not eat here, I insist!

We went as a group of 16 (SIXTEEN!) The waiter may have cringed at seeing us but he, Nathan, did FABULOUS! He did a fantastic job and everything was timely. The only negative thing I would say is to not order the tortilla soup. It is not good.

The brisket quesadillas were delicious. The flour tortillas were up there with the best I've ever had. Chips and salsa was good. But that is where my recommendations end. The restaurant is HUGE! Several large dining areas and many large groups celebrating birthdays very loudly in the echoing room! We could hardly talk at our own table. The carpet was nasty and the bathrooms gross and out of toilet paper. The margaritas are mostly unflavored ice. The brisket quesadillas and tortillas were good enough to make me overlook all that and want to go back again!

The restaurant is a bit over-hyped. The food was just OK, and the service was slow. A little disappointing.

Went for a home delivery and was surprised by the quantity. The food was good, price was decent. Ice cream quantity could have been better. Overall worth it.

I always make a point to eat at Alamo Cafe every time I come back to San Antonio! Alamo Cafe was my favorite restaurant when I lived in San Antonio & it's still my favorite restaurant in San Antonio. The staff always make you feel welcome & wanted. They are always friendly & professional. The food is great! While you wait for your food they will bring endless chips, salsa & tortillas made right there. Corwin our waiter kept our drinks full, our chip baskets full & our tortilla warmers full. I told our waiter Corwin I would like to take a few tortillas back with me to Tulsa later that afternoon when I flew out. A few minutes later Corwin came back with an entire to go container of fresh tortillas. Corwin went above & beyond my expectations! I Highly recommend this restraunt! I will Definitely be back when I'm back in San Antonio!
Once a SA Institution, Now Tired and Sad
I started going to Alamo Cafe over 30 years ago when the business was just north of 410 on San Pedro. I went there a LOT. My girlfriend even worked there. I spent a lot of time eating my way through the menu. It was decent Mexican food (what we call Tex-Mex), the chicken fried steak was solid, and the tortillas were great. My, how things have changed. The sprawling location several miles North of the original was appalling on almost every level. The crowd was dressed extremely casually—I’m taking sweat pants and flip-flops. The room was dirty, humid, and had a fetid smell. Many let their children run feral between tables and in walkways. The room was so loud I had to ask my daughter, seated next to me, to repeat herself often (I have good hearing). Over five tables remained un-bused for quite a while, and lastly the food was incredibly sub-standard—the beans were too thin, the rice was sticky, the chicken fried steak seemed straight out of the freezer, the salsa tasted canned, and the skinny margaritas were a mix or pre-made. The server was fine—doing what he could given the circumstance. I guess a tourist might like the kitschy decor, but my family will not be returning. It’s a shame to have lost what was once such a good, local choice.
