Not Your Grandfather's Steakhouse

By The_Loup_Garou |

We have been dining at Alexander’s, well, since before it was Alexander’s, and Bacar occupied this space. When they closed, we were sad, until we discovered Alexander’s. We have been dining there for several years. Besides the lovely space, the great service and interesting food, it is also located close to my wife’s corporate office, and is a great location to meet for dinner, after her meetings – just a short walk for her. Alexander’s Steakhouse is not “your grandfather’s steakhouse.” Not by a long shot. It is open, and more contemporary, than “clubby.” There is a lot of stainless steel, and glass everywhere. If there is a section of dark wood around, I cannot recall seeing it. Then, there is the kitchen. Many Asian influences creep into the dishes, but it is not an “Asian Steakhouse” either. Really hard to pin down, but that doesn’t matter, as the chef is doing his own thing, and turning out great food. One does not need a label, or some term to describe it – it is just good. Alexander’s is part of a “group” (I hate the term “chain,” and with the negative connotations, would never use it to apply to Alexander’s), and though I have not dined at the other locations, it seems that each chef (Marc Zimmerman at this location) has a great deal of latitude in the creation of the dishes, for each, and that same latitude in the construction and delivery. Over the years, we have often done the Tasting Menu, but also ordered á la carte. On this visit, we did the latter. To help us with our reading, and decision-making, I ordered a couple of glasses of the J. Lassalle Cachet Or 1er Cru, Champagne NV. I started to go with the Krug Grande Cuvée, as we did a week of Krug, back in Dec – but could see that I was going to blow my wine budget in just a moment, so reeled it in just a bit. Besides, we had this particular Krug about 5 times, over that week – very good, but not inexpensive. I started our June evening with a bottle of the Philippe Colin Chenevottes Chassagne-Montrachet 1er ‘11. I was torn between it, and the Bruno Colin Morgeots Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru ‘10, but it seemed that we were drinking a lot of Bruno’s Montrachets lately, so chose Chenevottes, over the Morgeots. I try to not get into a rut, regarding my wines, and try to spread my choices around. I do not usually order wines that I have in my cellar back home. I try to not order wines I have recently had. I try to branch out, as much as I can. However, I make exceptions for the Burgs of Marc, Bruno and Philippe Colin (plus a few of their family consortiums). I just love their wines. With that started, we put together some eclectic selections for dinner: Hon Hamachi w/ avocado / serrano / cilantro / yuzu-soy / garlic / radish Kohada Sashimi w/ 2015 ramps / wild mustard / double-fermented tamari (2 pieces_ Duck Egg Chawanmushi w/ dungeness crab / golden char roe / pea mousse Wagyu Tartare w/ aerated curry cream / spring onion / pine-smoked ramp oil / pickled ramp* Magret of Duck w/ sunflower / honey / local wild mushroom Filet Mignon w/ bordelaise / chive Sides: Wild Mushrooms – yuzu / shiro shoyu / chive Brentwood Corn – corn dynamite / shichimi / furikake / smoked marrow I also had added a half-bottle of the Speri Amarone della Valpolicella “Monte San’Urbano” ‘10. I started to go with a big, new world Kosta Browne Pinot Noir, but am glad that I did not. After we left San Francisco, or travels took us to New Orleans, and the Kosta Browne Pinot Noirs were the ultimate wine to pair with dishes at 3 restaurants. The Côte Rôtie was excellent, and we’d have done 4 Kosta Brownes, pretty much in a row – see above about not liking to repeat the same wines. Fortunately, the wines in New Orleans varied from the Gap’s Crown to the Sonoma Coast, so not the same exact wine, but you get the idea. The Hamachi was very good, as was the Sashimi. The Duck Egg was interesting, but not up to the first two dishes. The Wagyu was very good plus. The Duck was the weakest course, but the Filet was a knockout. The Mushrooms were very good, but the Corn was excellent. I would have said “dynamite,” but that word had already been used in the description of the dish... * We had just had Beef Tartare at Fera in London, done with “coal oil,” so I had to try the “pine-smoked ramp oil.” Different, and very good, but the nod goes to the coal oil. Also, note that we got our USDA Monthly Allowance of Ramps – something that is not done easily, unless dining at say, Blackberry Farm, during Ramp season. We were seated in a booth (Alexander’s has tables and booths on the lower level), near the rear of the restaurant. Though the main dining room was busy, and the kitchen (across the room from us) is open, the noise level was very low. The booth, however, is very slightly cramped. I swear we have been seated in that same booth, but this night, it seemed a tighter squeeze, between the seats and the table. Maybe I dined too well in London in May? The table area was adequate, even with all of our wine. Service was excellent, even with the “booth” seating, and we were welcomed back by several members of the staff. That is always a nice touch. I applaud Wine Director, David Meneses, for the wine list. It’s breadth and depth is appreciated, as are the half-bottles. We often will go with 4 - 5 half-bottles, when it’s just the two of us dining, to sample a broader range of wines with our meal. While these wines are not inexpensive, there are enough “values” sprinkled in, to satisfy all but the most frugal of diners. And, speaking of “expense,” Alexander’s is not cheap, by any respect. However, we have always felt that the full experience: service, wine/wine service, food, and ambiance, make for an evening of “value,” at least to us. While we still miss Bacar, we love Alexander’s, and try to dine there at least twice per year. They always wow us, and this meal was no exception.

Great Ambience, Subpar Service and Food Quality

By John C |

The food was good but not great. The price is a little steep. I don't mind paying good money for great food and drinks, and I was just left lacking. There's better alternatives in San Francisco

Great food ruined by poor service

By bakerslincolnhouse |

A pleasant, though expensive evening, ruined by staff with attitude, coats virtually thrown at us, and the bill delivered before even finishing desert! We found the experience interesting but not great! Would not recommend to fellow well travelled potential customers looking for a truly great steakhouse! Not this one!!

A Different Type of Steakhouse

By David S |

While the main entree is still a cut of beef, Alexander prepares the steak and all that goes along with in in a different style. The side dishes are not your usual steakhouse ones, but an esoteric take on the dish, i.e. cream Brusell sprouts and not cream spinach. Shoestring fries with a dipping sauce and not ketchup. The lemon tart is a must have desert. The coffee and tea selections are phenomenal and the great way to end a terrace meal.

Nice experience

Went there for new years eve. We got offered 2 set menus which was a bit of a surprise. however, it was excellent and definetly on the candiate list to go again

Tasty contemporary food

Everything was good. Our faves were the scallops, beet salad, prime rib, and the high end wines by the glass. They surprised us with lots of dessert and our favorite was the bone marrow brownie. Eating here was a first class dining experience.

Great experience

Our evening with friends was excellent. We started with drinks at the bar - the martinis were well made. The edamame was a great starter and the steaks were perfectly cooked. The whisky selection was outstanding and we really enjoyed the nice touch of dessert at the end, which was offered by our server as our friends are regulars.

Great food, and wonderful service!

By M K |

Barry, and Joe were our main servers. We couldn't have been better taken care of! We were slightly early for a reservation, and it was no problem. Seated immediately. Ordered our appetizers, dinner and accompaniments and food started coming very quickly. Never felt rushed, food was excellent. Would go there again. The "small" prime rib my wife had was tender, flavorful and very well presented and prepared. I had an American waygu steak, which was tender, and served with a dozen different salts, to show off the different taste flavors to be found in the meat. Nathan the manager was friendly and warm making this a wonderful spot we will go back too.

Things that make you say mmhmmm

I had dinner with a business associate and two clients. I arrived early. The bar staff was very attentive and recommended excellent choices for drinks. If you need a freshen up on which Scotch or Bourbon is top knotch and suited for your taste, then ask these guys what would be good. The food was exceptional ! We had most of the appetizers as well as a mix of the Coby and regular steaks. Mouth watering meal ! The service was great and the food was over the top good ! Try the chocolate desert. Wow !

What a romantic night with stunning food.

My husband and I visited Alexander's Steakhouse to celebrate our wedding anniversary as part of a long weekend trip to SF. The sommelier and a waiter were very professional and more importantly wagyu steaks were stunning! As was the red! Highly recommended for a special celebration.

Alexander's Steakhouse in Cupertino, CA

By Milani1987 |

My husband and I went there for lunch on a weekday because we didn’t want to have to deal with the weekend crowd. Parking here can be a little tough because there are multiple restaurants in the same shopping complex. The location is in a new building. I thought the exterior looked a bit ugly and “retail-ish and low-end”, but once you get inside it is nicer. We were both greeted by a host in a blazer, which is a nice touch. We each had a glass of wine, which was not at a bad price of $15.00 each. We don’t really drink, so this was a major one off. If you are a wine drinker, the restaurant offers many many other wines so you do not have to worry about getting a certain high-end quality of wine. My husband wanted to order the tomahawk steak, however we were informed it would take 2hrs & 30 minutes to cook to perfection. But because of time constraints, I had to go back to work, we each ordered the three-course lunch with a side of lobster mac & cheese. They give the most perfect amount of food. What I mean is that, it is the amount your stomach is supposed to handle and they do not over feed you, which is what I like. Our host, I could see she was rushing around the restaurant, I wasn’t sure why. Maybe the servers were understaffed. She was nice and did bring us an extra free dessert to try. I would gladly go here again. If you decide to go here on a weekend, I’d give yourself extra time to find parking. I don’t know if they offer valet.

An experience not to be missed

I have been many times to Alexander's and it's never failed me. The food is great. The drinks and wine are good. And the service is top notch. I've had mixed luck with the dessert but that's all. The steaks are awesome. Their hamburger (I think available only if you ask or it's on the bar menu only) is excellent and pricey. I have sat in the bar area most of the times I've been there and it's usually a mix of people having their drinks before being seated and people having drinks and dinner as I do.

Stick to the steak

By grapeeape |

They know how to cook a steak. I ordered the 6 ounce filet and it melted in my mouth. Everything else surrounding the steak was just okay. We had mashed potatoes and carrots as sides. The kitchen loves sending lots of gifts and surprises (aperitifs), I would've preferred more bread instead. The wine prices are expensive. The service is wonderful, my water glass never dipped below a sip. Loved the decorations, exposed brick, industrial meets modern. I don't know if I would visit again in in San Fran, but glad I tried it this time.

A Lovely Dinner in October

By The_Loup_Garou |

A Lovely Dinner in October In October, wee were in San Francisco for business meetings for my wife. She had one evening free, and after her meetings that day, was able to join me for dinner at Alexander’s Steakhouse, a short walk from her corporate offices. We have now done that a few times - when she gets an evening free, that is. Located at 448 Brannan St, on the cusp of SoMa (South of Market Street) and China Basin Area, we have known Alexander’s, from when they first opened. We knew their space, when Bacar was located there. Back then, the neighborhood was still quite rough, but with the addition of Giants Stadium, and the related development, it has come a long way. Some things changed, regarding the décor, but not really all that much. It is still quite sleek, and I would typify the interior as “industrial chic.” It’s pleasing, and is atypical for most steakhouses. Now, neither my wife, nor I, are really big “steakhouse people.” We dine at many, but always as guests, or when dining companions select the restaurant. We love steak, but the traditional steakhouse is just not on our Top-10 Lists. However, Alexander’s is not your like most. In an earlier review, I stated, “Alexander’s Steakhouse is not “your grandfather’s steakhouse.” It does not look like it. It does not feel like it. And even though the menu is steak-centric, Alexander’s differs from all others, where we have dined. First, there are some interesting Asian influences, which pop up all over the menu, and maybe in a dish, but maybe in a preparation. Next, Executive Chef, Eric Upper, brings a background with Joël Robuchon in Las Vegas and Aureole in New York City, to the kitchen. It shows, and shows clearly. We were promptly seated at a booth - I think we have been in that booth, at least twice before. I thought that it was cramped before, but really found the seat to table distance to be uncomfortable, and even my petite wife felt the same way. Our hostess moved us with a smile, and no questions to a 4-top along the back wall, with banquette seating, and then a chair. My wife likes the chair, and the banquette seat allows me to see the Sommelier approaching. Something that I knew would happen often, during the evening. Maybe Alexander’s keeps a dossier, and had me marked down as “Booth X is his favorite?” Three other restaurants in San Francisco do have our favorite tables on record, and without a request, always see to it, that we are seated at those. On a few visits, we have ordered from the á la carte menu, but not on this evening. We opted for the Chef’s Tasting, which we have also done a few times. I tried to get my wife to indulge me in the “Hitachi Whole Cow” menu, but she declined, due to the number of courses. Instead, we had 5 courses, including Dessert, and I did the wine pairings, from Sommelier, Sean Widger. While we were making this determination, I ordered us both a glass of Chardonnay: the Jean Collet Chablis ‘17, Mount Eden ‘17, to help us decide. Service began with an amuse bouche course, and we sipped our Chablis, anticipating a culinary journey about to begin. Our First Course was: Hon Hamachi w/ avocado, serrano, cilantro and yuzu-soy - this is a signature dish, and excellent! It was paired with the Simmonet-Febvre Brut Crémant de Bourgogne NV, which worked very well. We were off to a good start. The Second Course was Chilled Corn Soup w/ yuzu koshu, chanterelle sott’olio - a wonderful, and flavorful soup on an October evening. This was paired with the Fred Prinz Jungfer Riesling Kabinett ‘15, but our leftover Chablis went well too. We had a choice for the Third Course, so did one of each: Sea Bass w/ San Marzano, Romanesco squash and squash blossom - the fish was very fresh, and cooked to perfection. The crispy skin just lifted off. This was paired with the Favati Fiano di Avellino Pietramara ‘17. And the Wagyu Cotechino consisting of A5 Hitachi beef, broccoli di cicco and Jimmy Nardello peppers - this tartare was wonderful, and the pairing with the Domaine Drouhin Willamette Valley Pinot Noir ‘08 worked beautifully. For the Fourth Course, we also had options, and chose one of each: Tajima Australian Wagyu (3oz), which came with a sort of muffin tin, with 12 salts - this was very good, and the salts were interesting, to say the least. Or, 8oz Filet Mignon - cooked very well, and wonderfully flavorful. I think that I might have liked it better, than the Wagyu? These came with Blistered Shishito Peppers w/ sambal, soy and ginger - great, but a large bowl. Mashed Potatoes w/ beef “craklins,” pickled horseradish and chive - this was the winner, and not too large a portion - interesting preparation, and it worked perfectly. These were paired with the Mauritson Wines Rockpile Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon ‘14, which was a very nice wine, and the big Cab cut the fat in the Wagyu nicely. Dessert was “Textures of Chocolate” with popping candy and fleur de lait ice cream - though not a real “dessert person,” this was both attractive, and tasty. It was paired with a Smith Woodhouse, LBV Port ‘04, which was a good compliment. Finally, there was cotton candy, and our server brought out the Table Safe, which was new addition to the payment process, and new to me, so I needed some instruction. Service was excellent, with no long pauses, and nothing rushed. The wine service, from two Sommeliers was both fun, and well-timed. I hate to get a wine in a tasting menu meal, that comes after the dish, or long before. The stemware was great, and varietally appropriate to each wine. Well-done, and great wine service. The lighting in Alexander’s is just about ideal, with lower general ambient light, and then enough over each table, to appreciate the dish full. Though there is a bar area, in the front of the restaurant, and then a semi-open kitchen, the noise level was low to moderate. Except for the booth, otherwise table spacing was good, and our service team had no issues with working our table. Maybe I have been eating too well, as I do not remember that booth being quite so tight? When we were finished, I got a tour of the wine cellar, and one of the private rooms downstairs - big Scotch collection too. That area had its own, separate bar. Years ago, my wife hosted two business dinners at Alexander’s, in private, upstairs dining rooms, but I have never seen those. Just an excellent evening, and at a steakhouse, no less.

What a lovely restaurant in downtown SF!

By Princygirl |

On our last night in SF, my husband surprised me by going for dinner to this lovely restaurant. He now knows my taste (great food, great service and great atmosphere/ambience), and this represented a great deal. The “welcome dish” they serviced us (picture of a tiny plate) something with mayo and vegetable I believe. I was really disappointed with the size, no matter what it was and how it tasted. So maybe this should improve for sure. After we ordered, things got better: we had fillet mignon (absolutely delightful); my husband had Hereford Striploin together with rainbow carrots and caramelized sweet onions. Concluding the bill/evening with chocolates and cotton candy. It was a really great experience. The service was nice, the restaurant’s atmosphere had a good vibe, the food was really tasty and really great food presentation. I felt I was back in London, and this is definitely a compliment. This option is on the pricy side, as not much on the menu could be looked at as a cheap option, but money worth it. Value: 9/10 Food: 10/10 Atmosphere: 9/10

Great steak, trribaley expensive, exteamly slow service

By Aaron M |

The steak was really good - I had the schmiz steak the sides we have shared at the table were very good as well the service was very slow - it was about 40 min until we got our food the desert menu is very poor in terms of selections the coffee we have got was not matching what we have ordered and the price - EXTREMELY expensive for this kind of food.

Value Can't Match Expectations

By Steve N |

We came with high expectations but were disappointed knowing that we were going to pay outrageous prices. The prices were outrageous and the menu was anything but what you might expect at another steak house. No baked potato or creamed spinach or traditional mushrooms or traditional salad. They have an awesome scotch menu but when i ordered a cheaper more immature scotch that was on the menu I was told that they couldn't find it. After ordering a more expensive scotch I insisted on trying the immature scotch and finally got it. Seems as if the staff was too busy to look the first time. Our food while not being what we had planned was superb. The prime rib was one of the best I have had. The wild mushrooms were good but not as nice as a traditional steak house mushroom side. The caramelized onions were delicious. The only thing we did not like was the butter made from the fat from the beef and honey. We found it almost offensive. We certainly won't be going back but if you like a creative steakhouse approach, good service and a nice setting and are willing to mortgage your house to enjoy it then this may be your place.

You think you already had the best steak?

By Andreas K's foodprints |

My local buddy Michael showed me this place with the words "this is the best steak you will get in town!" Now, as I don't know a lot of steak places yet in San Francisco myself, I cannot confirm that it's the best. What I can tell you is, that it was damn good and that I had steak all over the world and this is definitely in the top ranks. We've been there on a Saturday evening. A reservation is absolutely necessary. While you wait for your table, if you have to, there is a nice bar where you can enjoy a high class cocktail. We had a nice table with a view on the open kitchen, where you can see the chefs working their magic. The staff was very friendly and knowledgable. We had Filte Mignons with some nice sides such as sauteed mushrooms, curry cauliflower and glazed onions, accompanied by some delicious Merlot from the Nickel & Nickel Suscol Ranch in Napa Valley. For those of you, who like sweet dessert wines, I can recommend the Hungarian Royal Tokaji wines Alexander offers! This is definitely a fine dining place. The price range for meat starts around 55 USD up to around 300 USD (Kobe, Wagyu,...) It was a wonderful evening with high class food! Definitely a recommendation.

Went in a vegetarian, came out a carnivore.

By JaxunGrayder |

Kidding of course. I like eating good quality meat and this place served the very best. I ordered one of the top pieces of US meat and just to make sure, a very nice piece of Kobe beef. The US steak was brilliant and well cooked. Just perfectly crisp and moist and tasty. The Kobe was off the scale. I had eaten some pretend Kobe but this was just baller. The wine and servers were brilliant and helpful and made arrangements to increase my group instantly. I arrived with 8 instead of 5 and it was no problem. The pre-dinner drinks were also well prepared... and moisted the appetite bueno. If in San Francisco and you want meat, I would say, go here. Pricey? Yes. But if you are going to eat meat, may as well make it the best meat you can get.

Overpriced

By Martin d |

This came forward from TripAdvisor as the best steakhouse in town. We must be different, since we felt it was very high priced for small steak, too fast for a nice dining experience and in general 'trendy' but losing the steakhouse concept. Later we went to Harris and Morton's which offered better (less pretentious) service, better steak and an excellent value for money. Understand that there is a 'crowd' for this kind of restaurant, but if you are looking for a fine dining steakhouse, go elsewhere.

Best steakhouse in sf. Great

By Gsabourin |

Best steakhouse in sf. Great service, incredible food - perfect for special occasion. I’m a regular here and love the menu rotation.

Never again.

By 5heartfamily |

This restaurant has a contemporary/brick warehouse mixed decor, but it is overly expensive for the so-so service, poor advice of the staff, and food errors. Here are a few examples: 1) I requested a replacement glass of water twice, which never came. After my son gave me his, the busboy filled 2 glasses, left the 3rd (mine) almost empty, and didn't notice my son had no glass. 2) I told our waiter my highest priority was a tender cut of steak, but that I'd like to try something other than a ribeye or filet mignon (which I generally have). He suggested a Dry Aged T-bone, which I ordered medium rare. My steak was chewy and hard and over-cooked except for a narrow band next to the bone. By the time he inquired if everything was alright, I didn't want to wait for another - to be eating alone after the rest of the table was finished. My husband had the same cut and didn't care for it either, despite it being cooked appropriately. 3) Although the mushroom and onion sides were good, the curry cauliflower was overly strong. 4) The chocolate soufflé (which I only tasted) was bland and served with a bitter grapefruit sauce and an oily textured caramel at the base - unappealing. Note: Their prices for Wagyu are outrageous, even compared with other SF restaurants, and their wine selections are extraordinarily marked-up.

Some great food!!

A quintessential steak house. We had dinner there with a couple of friends. the service was very good although there were so many different waiters that we lost count after 5. the food was excellent. Had a beautiful filet.

Friendly Service but Grossly Overrated

By Wilmington A |

Went here on a recommendation and after reading some of the reviews. Decor was typical of a high-end steak place, decent wine and drink list. I ordered "A Study of Beef" option. Basically a 7 course meal that left me still hungry afterwards. The only thing that was very good was the 3 oz cut of Miyazaki Wagyu steak, everything else was beyond disappointing. My date had the filet and mash potatoes, carrots and a salad...have seen an tasted much better filets at less expensive establishments. Salad was a train wreck, hardy and tough as nails to eat greens with putrid dressing. Filet was overcooked and tasteless. And not to be outdone by the main entree, the choc souffle dessert tasted bland and looked like toilet residue. The only saving grace was the dinner was pre-paid for by one of my company vendors, otherwise I probably wouldn't have been able to sleep soundly that night after dropping $600 for 2 people. Dined at Farallon 2 nights prior and our bill was 1000 for 6 people, better overall experience hands down.

Off the Mark

By sfimporter |

The food here is good, served with a fine dining flare (one step away from placing micr-greens with tweezers). Don't go expecting the usual American-type steakhouse. This place has an Japanese edge - and as such, some of your normal expectations aren't available. I really wanted to start with a typical wedge salad, but there aren't any really normal salads on the menu. The closes thing on the menu was a dish of "Marin Roots Greens". The menu is heavy with foie gras, seafood, bone marrow - that type of thing. I'm not sure if I read the menu correctly - the chef's "experience" seems to be $300/person with optional $248/person wine pairings. Truly. There were a lot of staff milling about as we entered. And I get the impression that they are encouraged to interact with the guests. In fact, I thought the menu was geared toward that interaction as well. Our problem was that we had a bit of an awkward waiter. He only took the time to tell us what they were out of. The menu itself is more of a list of ingredients rather than an explanation of the dishes. For instance, my starter was the Duck Egg Chawanmushi which was merely described as "Matsutake / Roasted Sunchoke / Douglas Fir". It was essentially a soft egg-white served in the shell. Tasty, but the menu described nothing but the ingredients. Mains were petite filets. Hard to go wrong there. Though as every dish was presented, it felt like the deliverer was concentrating more on announcing the ingredients, rather than placing the dish. I almost got the impression that it was stressful for them to remember everything. Prices were high. Nice to have visited, but I can't see this being on my go-to rotation.

You can get better in SF fer shure......

By FashionSpeedTravel |

I'm a steak person and I like it straight-up without interference of odd "flavors"....but back to that later. The wine list and wines by the glass were varied, extensive, and worth going to for a glass. It's actually worth skipping dinner.... I went on business with a concierge of arguably the top hotel in S.F. This person did not announce whom they worked for but wanted to test this place out as referrals for their guests and dignitaries. The waiter took our order. He was curt, explained dishes when we asked specific questions, but never offered additional insight into the philosophy or background of the restaurant. Started out with the parsnip soup. A server came to the table and looked like he squirted hairspray/mousse into a flat dish. We waited to commence dinner until I received my soup. "That's your soup," he said, referring to the "C"-shaped foam on my bowl. Um, I didn't realize it was going to be one of "these" types of dinners. I am perfectly fine with it but "steakhouse" is a different connotation and expectation. The flavors here were heavily Asian-inspired, which brings me to my steak. I ordered a filet, rare. Yet, the steak had a slightly fishy, "umami" flavor that simply tasted different enough not to love. The quality of the steak, though, was wonderful. So it felt bad to leave much of it on the plate. Dessert saved the evening. Chocolate soufflé which was light as air but dense with flavor.

Check out the menu prices online first!

By Heather E |

Don't get me wrong, the food here was delicious but some of the steak prices were crazy and unless you are up on your knowledge of cow breads and take your steak eating as an art form, the menu reads as a tad pretentious. The food is cooked to a high standard and I can not fault the taste or presentation of our meals. The staff found us a table, which was a turn of luck as the place was fully booked with people waiting and eating at the bar. I think this place would suit for a nice special meal out for an occasion. It was roughly £400 for two. Small starter and two of the lowest price steaks on the menu with a side each and two soft drinks. If you like wine, there is a whole bible of a wine menu to look at.

New Fav

By Stewart C |

This is my new fav in SF. The service is very good and the dessert platter is outrageously good! I will definately be back!

If it wasnt for the over 1 hour delay to recieve our food, I would give it 5 stars

By Gary P |

We came here for a dinner for 4. This was our first time here. We were quite disappointed as we did not receive our food for over 1 hour delay!!!!Unacceptable. Unfortunately, the waiter did not even update us as to the status of our food. Luckily, the Manager made it right and comped 2 of the 4 entrees. I will through this visit out the door and will adjust my rating accordingly. I want to add that the food however was out of this world good!

Enjoyable Dinner

By Windwardmom |

We had just arrived in San Francisco -- were tired, famished, and, truth be told, more casually dressed than we'd hoped. We were warmly welcomed nonetheless and had a great dinner near the bar. Service was friendly and professional, steaks were well cooked and we really enjoyed our first restaurant in the area. ( The cotton candy was terrific as well!)

So Good!!!

By Mary C |

I've been to all other restaurants in the Alexander's group and finally made my way to SF. I've always been delighted and impressed by the food, service and ambience that each location provides and this new experience was no exception. We came on the Monday before Thanksgiving for a small birthday celebration and the restaurant was understandably quiet and relaxing. Good for us! We arrived early and were warmly greeted by the lovely hostess and Joe, the matre 'd. Our birthday girl was running late so we sat in the bar to wait and enjoy some French sparkling wine and their incredible truffle butter/sea salt edammame. This is a MUST ORDER dish! Service and food was impeccable. We started with Hamachi Shots (they call it Hon Hamachi at SF). This is a signature dish throughout the Alexander's restaurants but I've noticed that each executive chef puts their own spin on them. Personally, my favorite remains the ones from The Sea in Palo Alto but SF did not disappoint! We did our dinner "family style" so we could try a bit of every yummy thing. Steaks were on point and served with an international tasting of 12 exotic salts. We treated the birthday girl to the Miyazaki wagyu as she had never tried Japanese wagyu before. It was delectable and not too rich, as some prefectures can be. The highlight of our dinner was the white truffle pasta! House made spaghetti with parm and the most delicate and flavorful shavings of white truffles sung on our palates like a full blown food opera! Service couldn't have been better. Birthday girl received a hand written card from Joe at the start of our evening and they treated her to a gorgeous dessert bite, replete with a chocolate "Happy Birthday" message and a candle. Everyone on the floor that night worked together to give us an outstanding experience. Would I return? Absolutely!

Not the same

By NKPBerkshire |

As a frequent traveler, I have experienced a lot of steakhouses around the world. Alexander's was easily my favorite in North America, but my most recent visit was a disappointment. First, let's clear the elephant from the room: the cotton candy tradition is no more. Is this a big culinary deal? No. Is it a big experiential deal? Yes, yes it is. The cotton candy was a fun twist on the end of a meal that could be a wonderful but a little pretentious. There is no smile at the end of dinner anymore. Just the giant bill. And what a giant bill it is. You can't do Alexander's right and get away on the cheap. I have no problem with high priced meals... as long as the food and the service was worth it. This time, it wasn't. It also seemed the cocktails were over priced, even by high-price restaurant standards. The staff was uneven at best. Some seemed to care quite a bit while others were clearly phoning it in. The meal was good, but not great. If this were my first Alexander's dinner, it would have been my last. That pains me to say. The kitchen had trouble getting steaks cook properly, which is really job #1 at a place like this. We heard excuses, but no one took ownership for the fact that we were paying top dollar for food from a kitchen that couldn't deliver what was ordered. I will give Alexander's another chance since my prior experiences were so wonderful, but I fear that the demise cotton candy is just the tip of iceberg when it comes to changes at the restaurant.

Great steak, expensive wines

By DrLivingstone41 |

A colleague invited me to dinner at Alexander's. It's a little off track but nice enough decor / ambience if the hostess was a little underdressed but no harm there. I find steakhouses in the US generally have good steak (compared to Europe for example - the opposite is true for seafood) so I order based on size. A 48 oz Tomahawk was available but I ordered the 8oz filet, rare. It was very good, tender, juicy with a nice salty crust. The truffle fries were so/so. The waiter expended quite a lot of energy trying to pursuade us to buy some apparently rare cut of wagyu beef from cows that live in a snow climate. He was so persistent and unconvincing we had to tell him to stop or we would leave. The wines were also good but in my opinion off the scale. I finished with an Armagnac priced at $140 per glass at the insistence of my host. I didn't get to see the final bill but I can't imagine there was any change out of $600 for two. Good but not that good.

Top five prime rib of all time!

By THESUPERFRANK |

My cousin and I both ordered the 20 oz. prime rib. I eat at steakhouses regularly and in recent years, the prime rib is fair at best. This is true old school, high quality, perfectly cooked, mouth watering meal. The three horseradish sauces on the side were so delicious, but we hardly used them as the meat was too buttery delicious on its own. We ordered three sides for three of us which was way too much. Our server could not have been more helpful. Overall, one of the best meals in a restaurant I've had in years. Thank you Alexander's!

Wide selection of premium steaks... at a premium price

By Brad L |

We arrived early for our reservation time. No problem... we were seated promptly. We had a nice view of the open kitchen. We chose this restaurant because they serve multiple varieties of Kobe and wagyu steaks. We started with appetizers; - Hamachi shooters - excellent! - Uni toast - superb - Tempura short ribs - good Then entrees; - A5 kobe filet (3 oz) - Australian Wagyu filet (3 Oz) - US Wagyu strip steak (3 oz) - US prime porterhouse with bone marrow We wanted to taste and compare the different kinds of steaks side by side. This was a bit expensive ($95 to $145 per each steak selection). Service was excellent... (attentive but not creepy). Each dish was described while being served. Corkage was $35/ bottle. Their wine list was quite nice for those who wish to order at the restaurant. We really enjoyed this dining experience and would highly recommend this restaurant. The only down side was that the bill came to $800 for our table of 3.

Way over priced

By StationToStation |

Nice restaurant and the steaks were excellent. However, the focus is on very good high priced wines, Japanese cuts of steak that are priced out of this world and a gentle push to keep you spending and upgrading to more expensive options. It's just overpriced for even the very good food and attentive service.

Phenomenal restaurant! A truly incredible culinary experience! Impeccable service and staff

By Tom W |

Phenomenal restaurant! A true culinary experience! First off, the service is impeccable! Molly, Zara, Blake, Hugo were all beyond fantastic! Secondly, the restaurant is not your typical steakhouse, this is an open, inviting, and comfortable place that is designed for the besting dining experience possible. Start with the best edamame you will ever have. Next, the hon Hamachi is absolutely a must; absolutely delicious! I am typically not a fan of Asparagus, however, the asparagus salad and wonderful. Our table had the Schmitz heritage strip steak, the halibut and the most unbelievably delicious Hokkaido Japan Wagyu steak you will ever have the pleasure of eating. They present the steaks with 12 different salts. Lars and Molly described, in detail, the various salts and how they enhance the meat in 12 different ways; amazing! To top this delightful meal, I highly recommend that you order the chocolate soufflé. In addition to the soufflé you really must rely on your waiter to recommend one (or two) of the other exceptional dessert specials. Alexander’s Steakhouse is an absolute MUST when looking for one of the best dining experiences you will ever! You will love it!

Fantastic Steak - Superb service

By FixeRain |

This phenomenal restaurant is "Top 3" best steak I've ever had... and I consider myself an experienced connoisseur. Start to elegant finish, this was a sublime experience. Wagyu definitely A5, aged perfectly, prepared with intense attention to detail, and incredible service. Memorable. $600 for the 2 of us.

Outstanding beef and service

By 47suetravels |

More than your adverage steakhouse. You can choose type of meat from different grades of Wagu to speciality prime beef growers from all over the world. Every part of the dining experience unforgettable. Don't want to tell you too much and spoil all the nice surprise additions included in your meal. Will never enjoy a run of the mill steakhouse again after dining at Alexander's.

Dinner

By Sabin A |

Great food but service lousy. Snobbish Somalier. And staff not friendly. Also a cold draft that made our guests done with jackets and scarfs. We told staff they ignored us. So great food but not good staff. They think they are royalty

Fantastic restaurant

By SC2533 |

Great attention to detail - we told the it was our honeymoon so we received a card and a bunch of flowers. Very attentive service without being overbearing. Steak was fabulous. Great environment to eat.

Very expensive

By Antonella S |

Good steak, good food, snooty service. Overpriced. Waitress was sweaty and unkempt. Wine list was very good.. Steak cooked very well.

Private event

By dna7575 |

We were celebrating milestone birthdays for two friends. So, we had a private room on the lower level. The starters were okay, the mains were excellent, the dessert was dreadful, and the drinks were great. Overall a good experience, but be prepared...it's pricey!

Great place for delicious meal

By Alex R |

This is my second time in this place and again i really enjoyed all courses. This time I didn't order wagyu steak instead I decided to try fillet on bone with foie gras. Delicious! Same for starter and desert.

Absolutely Awesome Dinner

By Shu K |

I am a big fan of Alexander's - my wife and I have been to the Cupertino restaurant countless times since they opened, and we've gone to The Sea in Palo Alto a bunch of times too. I've even checked out their pastry shop in Mountain View. So it goes without saying that I had high expectations for this Alexander's in SF. It was a company party, so I booked the Boardroom, which is a separate room upstairs overlooking the tables and the bar downstairs. The coordination with the restaurant for the event was excellent, the service during the dinner was superb, and most importantly everyone loved it. The hamachi shots of course were a hit, the oysters were great. The main dishes were top notch, and as my vegetarian employee said, her food was exceptional. Altogether an excellent night! Location wise, there is a parking lot literally a couple of buildings away. The lot attendant leaves at 6pm, but it's a well lit, safe place, so no worries. And what's more, the restaurant is right near the major freeways, so getting in and out was easy. So now I've tried all the Alexander's restaurants in the Bay Area. I understand that there is one in Pasadena? We'll have to go there too! In short, this place is highly recommended PS: there is one major bummer. The restaurant no longer gives out the cotton candy at the end of the meal. This was a signature offering before the bill. I've had some of the best cotton candy - banana, passion fruit, chocolate... it was different every time. I'm hoping that we'll see a come back. And if not, I'll pay for the cotton candy for my dessert!

Amazing

By Alika N |

Well worth the price. Service was excellent, we had at least three staff servicing us at any point. I had the dry aged T-Bone, fingerling potatoes, and Brussel sprouts. Potatoes were okay, but the steak was the best I've had. Drink selection was top notch Highly recommend if in the area.

Superb & delicious food

By Adel A |

This is the greatest resturant with greatest food. The people who serve were very friendly and explained to us the menu in detail. The presentation of the ordered food was amazing and spectacular. Although it was expensive, it was worth for the quality of the food. It is highly recommended resturant in San Francisco.

All Hype and No substance

By aaronh3197 |

Great ambiance and the server was competent, but this place was all hype and not enough substance! When you claim you are a high end steakhouse and want to wear the crown, you are either going to be a 4/5 or a 1. Apparently this is supposed to be one of the best steakhouses San Francisco has to offer. That being said one would imagine that cooking a steak medium-rare would be pretty easy...apparently not for these guys. I went to Alexanders's on the 26th of last month in hopes of getting something MORE than just your average meal. While they like to razzle you and dazzle you with small plates and fancy cocktails, I think we all know what we are there for, the steak! Upon ordering 4 entrees (2 Bone in Filet's and 2 Ribeye's) and some sides we found that it was taking a bit of time to get the food out to us. No biggie as it seemed busy for a Thursday night and When my SO received her steak and cut into it, she told me to look at it. I gagged a little because I know how she ordered her Filet (Normal aka Medium Rare) and this was cooked WAY beyond that. After taking some time to flag down our waiter we finally got him to the table and instead of explaining to him what we thought the problem was, we asked him flat out what this cook looked like to him. He responded without hesitation and said "Medium Well" (Reminder : Medium Rare ordered). Without an actual discussion or apology he took the plate away and said he would fix it. This is when things for me brought this restaurant down to a 1 star. Apparently the "FIX" here at Alexander's isn't something simple like a cocktail or a glass of wine while you wait or a salad or quick appetizer or something taken off the bill. They basically think it makes sense to just throw lesser meat at you while everyone else is sitting there eating All of a sudden without warning a plate with a small prime rib just showed up and was placed in front of her. We protested as we had no idea what was going on and said we didn't want or order this. The waiter arrived after these individuals plopped it down without explanation and said it was temporary to make up for the issue with the Filet. We collectively took 1 bite of this thing and said take it away. The waiter stated he would hold it for us but of course we just left it there....why would we want it?!? Ok so let me get this straight. Filet Mignon was ordered because this individual...um....likes Filet Mignon. So your solution is to present them with something they DON'T LIKE in order to make up for your inability to cook a steak properly?!? Here...just fill your gut with this junk until we figure out how to cook what you actually ordered properly. Who is running this establishment?!?! I have been to restaurants and more importantly steakhouses all around the world and have never experienced this at a "high end" steakhouse like this. I can tell you I make frequent enough trips to San Francisco to know that there are plenty of options out there for restaurants. Don't believe the hype and stay away from this one and spend your money elsewhere.

A very special evening at a very special venue

By Eric D |

Let's get one thing out of the way - this is a seriously expensive place to eat. If everyone drinks don't be surprised at a bill over $200/head - and that gets a LOT higher if you're ordering the top cuts of Wagyu. That being said, this is also one of the best dining experiences you can have. From the Hamachi shots (I could have just had 10 of these for dinner and been happy), through the various mains to the best Wagyu I've ever had, finishing with artisan coffees that are unbeatable. Go here if you want a very special experience with professional but fun staff, and don't mind giving your credit card a workout.

Chef’s Tasting Menu

By Jun_Cruz |

Overall good dinner. The 5-course tasting menu is a pretty good deal even with the wine pairing. The size of each dish was more than expected, including a generous 8-oz filet mignon for the steak course. The steak was seared nicely but still juicy and cooked to the right temperature as requested. It’s always fun to receive the cotton candy at the end of the meal. One disappointment in the service towards the end. After the 4th course, I got up to the bathroom. When I came back, the desserts and the wine were served already. Nobody came back to explain what they were. As we were finishing up the dessert, nobody came to ask if we wanted coffee or anything else. Before I had a chance to find my server to ask for a coffee, he brought the check out. Also they use the SafeTable check system. It’s nice and makes your credit card information more secure, but it would have been better if they let us know that it’s self service system. I didn’t realize that until I asked.

Best Filet Mignon Ever!

By arhageman |

I was fortunate enough to attend a work related dinner here. I had some green tea before dinner which was delicious. I tried the Hamachi Shot, the Edamame, the Filet Mignon, and two desserts. The whiskey selection was amazing. I tried the Elmer T. Lee based on the servers suggestions. It was excellent. Great service. If you want to know all about the best beef in the world (and you don't mind paying for it), reserve your table now!

Beef tasting menu

By Zake |

Beautiful location and great service, friends and I tried the $248.00 beef tasting menu. Was it good-yes, very good. Would I try it again-no. Would just order off the menu. Everything was beautifully prepared and I like every course, especially the beef with 12 different types of salt, but it was a little over the top for my taste. Wine selection is outstanding and includes my favorite wines from Diamond Creek.

Best Steak Ever

By Paul T |

Quite simply the best steak ever. We had three 3 oz Wagyu steaks: 2 from Japan (Miyagi and Gifu) and the US Imperial Wagyu between two of us with confit potatoes and wild mushrooms. It is cooked to perfection. But with a starter as well (I think the best choice for sharing is the Edamame, although we both had HonnHamachi as well) and indeed two deserts this is an expensive place. Worth it? Without doubt.

Great restaurant

By Lucas M |

Fine dining type of place. Get a lesson on different types of meat from the waiter, and then get ready to decide how much to spend, because prices vary widely. Is it funny that my favorite dish was their appetizer with raw fish and not their famous steak?

Top quality in a relaxed ambience. Great wines and excellent waiters

By Peter B |

We had a business diner in this great restaurant with nice bar to wait in and open kitchen. We shared some wonderful finger bytes as a starter and went for the superb meat selection.

Great Steaks but?

By 665hughs |

In our first trip to San Francisco this was recommended and booked by Daniel the concierge at the St Regis Hotel. The first problem was that they did not have our booking. We did not find out why? Decor is good but tables small for two. The second problem and the worst it was freezing with air conditioning ridiculously high. We ate for the first part with coats on. We asked for it to be turned down which it was slightly. The food and the steaks were excellent however. The Japanese edge is good and the service was ok but not great. Looked to us like going through the motions. All in all we enjoyed our evening just!! I give it four stars just !! For the food.

Great restaurant with service excellence

By Blues_3000 |

This is a great restaurant with 5 star quality service. The price is expansive but for the quality of food offered and the attention to details service, I’m willing to go back whenever I’m in town. It’s mostly a steakhouse but it does offer fish for those who doesn’t eat the regular dishes. Very friendly and professional staff.

Do you wanna feel a princess? this is the right place

By Erica F |

High level restaurant... but sometimes you just deserve it. The prices are pretty high, but the food is more than excellent.

Celebration dinner for my "retirement"

By Brian Lillie |

Lovely dinner for my family and one friend at Alexander's. The food was very good, with the Hamachi shots being *exceptional* (a must order appetizer). The tomahawk chop steak was enough for 3 people, and was delicious with a great presentation. The only reason this got a 4 out of 5 is the service was a bit slow. Not the waiter's fault they are just understaffed. Plan on waiting for your food.

The Best Steak in the Bay Area!!!!!

By Tracey Rice |

My husband & I ordered our Christmas Eve meal from Alexander's Steakhouse (San Francisco location) and it was hands down, one of the best meals of my life! Working in the restaurant industry for close to 30 years, I am a foodie! We both enjoy interesting cuisine, prepared with thoughtfulness. We ordered their Prime Rib dinner and each bite was better than the next. The dinner ($199) comes with 3.5 lbs. of Prime Rib cooked medium rare, au jus, mashed potatoes, haricot verts, horseradish sauce & three delectable brownies. The package (we picked it up at the restaurant & there were lots of other people there waiting for their orders too) came with reheating instructions which was helpful, because we enjoyed our meal in EU fashion, later in the evening.... I highly recommend this restaurant & look forward to ordering from them again in the not too distant future. Thank you Alexander's Steakhouse!

A different take on steak

By Martin G |

Excellent dinner. 5 men, on business, tired of the typical steakhouse. We found it here. Every dish was different from what we expected. Different in a good way. From hamachi shooters to Kumamoto oysters with beet ginger gelee, this was the best. 11 grades of Kobe beef, plus several excellent steaks from the U S heartland. Fish, prime rib. Artfully delicious desserts. Excellent wine list, whiskeys, etc.

Steak they must serve in heaven

By Owen W |

Dined here for business and had the best steak I have ever had. Big statement I know but this was heavenly. Perfectly cooked, tender and the mushroom sauce subtle and amazing. This will not be the cheapest meal you have in the US but it will be the one you remember. We also had the corn soup which was also incredible.

Terrible experience

By Sunshine786177 |

I bought a voucher to eat at this restaurant from Travel Zoo. The voucher gave you the option to order a 20 oz. Prime Ribeye steak or a Wagyu Steak. When the restaurant called to confirm my reservation they told me my only option was to order a filet mignon. The original options were 45% higher in cost. I said that this was unacceptable, and that a manager would call me back. This never happened. When I got to the restaurant I mentioned this to my waiter, and he said he'd bring the manager over. She offered to give me the Ribeye, but I told her that my preference was the Wagyu steak that the option that I wanted. In a very surly way she told me I could take it or leave it. On the other hand our waiter and his assistant could not have been more delightful. Now as to the meal: The Hon Himachi was good The corn soup was fabulous The Seabass was awful. When you removed the skin the fish was mostly brown with very little white flesh and it tasted very fishy. The steak was very disappointing. I ordered it medium rare with instructions to err on the side of rare. It came out medium. The meat was tough and grisly. The steak had no grill marks. They put a very cloying brown sauce on top of the steak which very much masked the flavor of the steak. This was the worst steak I have had at a San Francisco Steakhouse. Elliott d

Disappointed

By Gaby K |

We were here before and really enjoyed it then. This time the steak again was perfect on the point but cold. The sides were ok. The restaurant is huge and the level of noise incredible. Maybe because the bar was also full, maybe because the music was turned up quite high. Service was ok, waiter made us not really feel super welcome. Maybe because we didn’t have any wine withe the steak?!?!? Desert was amazing regarding the taste the portion though was tiny - prices are high. We will not go there again.

A Great San Francisco Steakhouse

By George H |

Excellent food and service to say the least. A well run restaurant. The stakes and the sides turned out perfectly. We highly recommend.

Great steak

By Rod N |

I was hungry for a dry aged steak and was recommended to try Alexander’s. I was delighted with the meal. Many excellent choices of cuts; regular, dry aged and wagyu. Great choices for appetizers, salads and sides.

This place is amazing

By FunnyBaldGuy |

A whole new level of great service. The waiter was able to tell us which steaks we had last time we came (and that was 2 years ago). We ended up coming on back to back days this trip b/c a couple of us were dumb enough to not order a glorious Wagyu. We shared a kobe and each had a different wagyu as well. Amazing flavor. Wow. I'm ruined.

Wonderful

By elaine w |

Food and service were excellent. We had the Sunday prime rib special, Wagyu, and black cod, with mac 'n cheese and broccolini for the table. It was my son's birthday and they made it special with complimentary champagne and an amazing yuzu cheesecake. All the desserts were spectacular. This was a wonderful special occasion restaurant.

Best Dead Cow Option in SF

By Peter C |

One of the best steakhouses in the country. Variety of cuts from US, Australia and Japan is amazing. Best of all is the attention to all other courses and sides as well. Awesome bar and wine program.

Try a different location or another restaurant- service is horrible

By vivynyc |

Came here for a father's day dinner and was seated 30 mins past our reservation time. As you know with children, it tends to be a little more difficult to keep them waiting. A manager (asian) did come up to us to let us know we should be seated shortly. After seated, the waiter did not acknowledge us until 15 mins later. No settings, no menu, no water etc. As a big foodie, I wanted to know the difference between all the wagyu meats offered. The waiter failed to explain anything except for his favorite choices. I asked more questions and he was frustrated and flustered so he brought out the packaged meats to show us. Still he did not answer any of our questions. I ended up ordering blindly & was disappointed because of the taste and saltiness of the wagyu. Another issue with the waiter was he kept trying to upsell us. I know how much I can eat and same with the others in the party but he kept try to get us to over order. Aside from being dissatisfied with the food, the dessert was horrible. Lastly, when the check arrived, he automatically entered a 20% gratuity when I felt his service sucked. Is that customary for a party of 4?? All in all, I will never return to this location... spent way too much for a bad experience.

Great steaks and great service with it

By Andy S |

Went here for a business meal with 5 other colleagues the other night. A great 'formal' yet informal restaurant. Fabulous range of steaks on the menu and the service was impeccable. Waiters certainly knew their steaks and explained each in detail when we asked about a specific type. Good choice of wines, and our waiter recommended a particular one to try - and he wasn't wrong! Good atmosphere. Would highly recommend - but do book beforehand as it does get busy.

The best steak in 3 weeks in the USA

By Samantha W |

We had 3 weeks in the states, visiting many different states, including Las Vegas. Alexanders was the best steak we had the whole trip. The atmosphere, service and food were all top notch.

Great service good food

By xenoverse |

We went to Alexander’s Steakhouse for dinner while on a short trip to SF and we were please try delighted by our choice of the Chef’s Tasting Menu. The service was impeccable and the food was delicious. The items we received from the tasting menu were very good. The steaks themselves were a little too rich to my tasting but I wouldn’t blame the restaurant for that. Overall we had a wonderful experience there.

Pricey, but must be one of the best steaks in town

By Daniel D |

Visited this restaurant whilst on holiday in San Francisco. The menu offers a wide range of steaks, including some 9-11 types of wagyu beef. On the night, a special 4 ounce Tomahawk wagyu steak was available, and gave this a go - simply amazing! All other food (including starters) were of a very high standard, however, I must admit, the portion size of the Australian wagyu steak on the menu is pretty small and would expect that (since the size of this steak is not written on the menu), our server would have at least warned us of the size of this dish. Wine list in very vast, however wines are extremely prices here so watch out. All in all, an excellent meal, with great service and ambiance. Definitely watch out for an Alexander's Steakhouse if in the US.

Wonderful atmosphere!

By Fred W |

I loved the look of the inside, the staff was very good and best of all was the food. Really well done.

Nice and high quality steak house

By Wilson C |

It's surprise for me their cooking quality of steak can made such good quality, we had party for 6 and order different steak for sharing, all of them is good quality! Only bad thing in the steak house is their wine charge are extremely high ! Which almost 6 stars hotel you can imagine. Big wine list you can select but it's is difficult job for you to found your interesting wine with reasonable price you willing to order... Good luck and recommend to go, for sure I will go again if I have been SF again.

steakhouse with a lot of asian influence

By Uwe B |

after eating at BENU (good) and MANRESA (excellent) on day 3 of the San Fran trip we felt we want to eat a steak and went to Alexanders. beet salad as an appy and some small bites were all very good and my tenderloin was perfect. my wifes prime rib was a little cold ..so they had to warm it up again ...but it was a hugh piece and very good meat. the have a lot of wagyu beef and also omaha prime (for me the best meat you can buy) ....the manager osh was very nice and also all the stuff.

So-So

By EBP71 |

So So, Nice place from a design point of view. For my personal taste I didn't eat a great steak as was my expectations. The main room was too noisy for me. Service is great! A bit expensive considering the quality of the meet. In any case I will be back for a second chance.

Fancy, good food

By Platanonino11 |

We just randomly ended at this place. We knew it was a fancy restaurant. The portions are small as usual. Good bites, sophisticated. Steak was great, not the best I've ever had but all experience was very good. Dishes are nicely decorated. Br as is delicious and drinks very well prepared.

Superior service, food, wine list

By rbtvwestfall |

An insanely outstanding experience. The service was impeccable, the food insane, (get the edamame to start) and get the wagyu steak, an absolute MUST. we ordered ribeye's and filet's then a 3 oz wagyu to share at the table. By far the best wagyu i have eaten.

Fancy menu

By Kevin Parsakia |

We came heref for date night and it was a great spot. The filet mignon butterfly cut 6 oz cut is amazing. They give you many seasonal menu appetizers along the way so save the room: salmon tar tar, rasberry cotton candy, goat cheese cheesecake, etc. The service is absolutely amazing and you can make an opentable reservation. It can be a challenge getting to the restaurant in traffice so plan on leaving a little early. It's extremely pricy so come prepared to spend money. The chocolate souffle is really good and melts in your mouth.

Fantastic!

By RMA |

We had a lovely dinner amongst friends! The setting is stylish and relaxed. Excellent and rather quick service. The steak served was delicious and perfectly prepared. Easily amongst the top 5 steaks I ever had (and I have tastes a fair share of steaks around the world). There is also a very decent selection of wine here to perfectly accompany your meaty meal :) This steakhouse now is marked down as my new 'must go to when in SF' restaurant.

American & Asian Steak Experience

By Buck Rogers |

Business dinner with the team. Not for vegetarians! This was an end of the week blow out after several days touring the West Coast meeting suppliers. A real treat for meat eaters. The wine list was varied with a great selection of good wines, though at the higher price ranges. There were several options for starters with a mixture of sea food and Asian style dishes. These were excellent however be careful not to fill up as the real reason to go here is the Steak. Which was cooked to perfection and plentiful. There may have been desert but I couldn’t say as the meat sweats had set in! Service was outstanding and the atmosphere perfect for a lively dinner.

Pocketbook empty but belly full

By Penny W |

This is an amazing place but your wallet better be full! It is amazing food and fabulous service. We are from the Midwest and I struggled to know what was going to be served after I ordered but everything we received was excellent! Staff was very patient and helpful with our questions. It is a beautiful restaurant, it is upscale and I would not take young children there, but if you are looking for a night on the town with your guy and money is no object this is a must do!

Excellent food, good service

By ACKistner |

Again I could enjoy a dinner at Alexander´s. The food ist delicious, the steaks are done to perfection. So nothing to complain about. The filet Mignon is as wonderful as the NY Strip. SO if you love steaks, that is a great place to be. As it was a business dinner, we had a separate room (The wine cellar). The arrangement of the tales and chairs was not perfectly done. The waiters always bumped into my chair even that I was sitting close to the table. Overall a very good experience. I will certainly come back

Disappointing

By Campos2702 |

We came with high expectations and were totally frustrated. Even though the service is great the food was very disappointing, my husband's prime rib was cold and when we sent it to the kitchen it only came back after everybody was done. My daughter's side of French fries only came after we ask for it again and it she was already done with her meat. The New York steak wasn't tender and the side portions are very small even though we were told they were big and to share. They were nice enough to offer us complimentary dessert because of all the problems , but it was still a bad experience. compliment goes to the amazing service and to the cotton candy. But still overpriced for what they delivered.

Good.. not great

Good but certainly not great. If this is the best steak in San Fransisco then I'll eat meat elsewhere. Bar staff could not have been nicer. The place itself is warm and the music is a nice touch. They have a full stocked bar. I'm a tequila drinker and they have the G4 tequila but for reasons not explained the bartender told me he couldn't pour it. Odd to say the least. I ordered a bone in New York, medium rare. I asked that it be done Pittsburgh style with a hot charrred outside and a a warm red inside. Again, I was told no go as they have no way to get the steak that hot. It rang true as my steak was on the cold side. It was also a good 1/4 fat. They end the meal with cotton candy and a nice sweet chocolate. All in all fun and warm just not great food.

Pricey But Delicious

We had a great meal at Alexander's the other night. It was the third time we'd been there. I had prime rib and my husband had a steak (one of the "cheaper" ones at around $60). It was the best prime rib I've ever had, and everything else was good, too. We also had the mashed potatoes and the carrots with chorizo (nice combination) as sides, and chocolate souffle for dessert. All excellent. I'd also like to mention that our server (sorry I can't remember his name, but he told us he'd worked at the House of Prime Rib for ten years, if that helps) was outstanding. I have a severe food allergy, and he bent over backwards making sure that nothing I ate would be dangerous for me. Even the amuse bouche came specially prepared for me. Thanks for a great evening. Once we've saved up some more money, we'll be back! :-)

Are you for real???

We went there with a party of four. From 1 of the 5 regular steaks David the waiter told us only at the order that they are sold out:-( not a good start, the sommelier only recommended wines with highest price tags and ended up serving a $ 155 red wine at 12 degrees Celsius, too cold for established European taste and too bad for the wine itself. The steaks were fine but not phenomenal, side dishes very strange and not authentic. As stomachs were full we ended with a small espresso which was too burned:-( overall we paid >$ 500 for 4 persons and its not worth it at all! PS: serving techniques are a disaster: removing plates while others are still eating is an absolute No Go!

Fantastic steaks

By BayAreaTraveler6338 |

Even though their steaks were pricey, they were some of the best steaks we've ever had. My 20 oz. bone-in rib eye chop ($70) was cooked perfectly at medium rare and it was very tender and flavorful. I'm glad Alexander's doesn't offer A1 steak sauce because that would be an insult to the steak. Only complaint I had was my side dish of spring vegetables. At $16, they brought out a small serving of assorted vegetables, which wasn't even enough to share with others. Other than that, service was excellent and their wine list was pretty extensive.

Overpriced

Premium interior design but tables are dense and not much comfortable. Steaks are great in taste but overall restaurant is overpriced.

Amazing food and service

By stewarttownsend |

Wow, the steak is so amazing here and the service is non intrusive but totally balanced with the waiter coming out with random free samples to keep you refreshed and ready for the next course. I loved the candy floss at the end and you could go for a crazy $300 steak or a lovely $50 steak, either way a great experience.

Make sure your stomach is empty and your wallet is not!

Our concierge got us last minute reservations at this outstanding, but very pricey steakhouse after we were unable to get into a different, highly recommended restaurant that only served prime rib. We had no idea that it was going to be so expensive. Living near New York City, we are accustomed to paying high prices for good food, however, these prices were above Peter Luger's and Smith and Wollensky. In a word, exorbitant. The service was impeccable, the food heavenly and the steaks were cooked to perfection. My one regret is that I had not fasted for a couple of days or even all day. The meal was rich and and very filling, I could not even come close to finishing it even though I ordered the smallest filet. My husband had the dry aged strip steak and he was in heaven. We ordered macaroni and cheese which was decadent and mushrooms which were delicious. We passed on the fresh cotton candy after dinner snack as we were stuffed! Much to our surprise the waiter told us our concierge arranged for a hot lava cake. We managed to find just enough room for it, as it too was outstanding. My advice to those of you who don't mind paying a lot of money for a great meal, get ot you credit card and save your appetites, this place will not disappoint.

Worth every penny!

By 953julietaa |

I have been to Alexander Steakhouse several times but this last one was hands down the best meal and the best steak I have had in a while. We had the waigyu sampler and OMG I went to heaven and back...it was delicious and so tender the meat melts in your mouth. The appetizers are delicious as well, the fries are amazing and even the cotton candy at the end is great. The service is always top notch and that's why we use this restaurant a lot for business entertaining. I highly recommend this place you will not be sorry you paid all that money for your meal as this place is NOT cheap. However, like I said in the tittle, worth every penny.

New Kid in Town for me

By Al_K_GE |

Really good - great reception - 1a service /waiting - cool cocktail/drinks - beef quality right on. Like this Alexanders over the Cupertino on ;-)

Disappointing - great steaks poor service

By tonyjames4040 |

As always the steaks were great. The same unfortunately cannot be said for the service. My partner ordered an asparagus salad with her steak (actually a starter dish). What arrived was a small side salad which we sent back. There was barely an apology but they said the salad would be right out. When we had almost finished our meal we called the waiter over to cancel the salad. Again barely an apology. Then the bill arrived and there was the asparagus salad! We didn't even get offered a cup of coffee as compensation. The staff need to be trained to take ownership of a problem and sort it. Rather spoilt the meal and we will be going to other steakhouses in San Francisco in future.

"Treat yourself!"

By Ann60093 |

This was my second visit to Alexander's - the first visit was this past February and Rob and I decided to visit again since it was fabulous the first time. When we made the reservation we requested the server we had last time, "Mr. Peters" -- a.k.a., Blake -- since he was so professional and fun. (This is a high-end restaurant and the servers wear gorgeous suits and ties and the staff refer to each other "formally.") When we arrived, we learned that "Mr. (Blake) Peters" was the Maitre d. Upon our arrival he dashed over to apologize that he wouldn't be serving this evening and introduced us to Julio who turned out to be as competent and as much fun as Blake! We were off and running with complimentary glasses of Champagne and jovial chatter. We ordered perfectly-made martinis to start -- what goes better as prep for steak? Especially with 3 blue cheese olives ;-) To start, Rob "indulged" in the Uni toast and 3 Kumamoto oysters and clearly enjoyed them both. I selected the Mangalitsa pork terrine simply because it has bacon and English peas. When it was served it looked like foie gras! And, it was also delicious. The steaks and meats... there is a serious range of options across all price ranges: steaks, roasts and WAGYU. We both had filet mignon - one 8 ounce and one 10 ounce bone-in. Yes, perfectly cooked. For sides, we enjoyed the mac & cheese and one "healthy" choice of sugar snap peas. Rob paired this with a lovely red burgundy from an incredible wine list ranging from glasses to an unusually large selection of half bottles and full bottles from everywhere. Throughout our meal we were lavished with attention from both Blake and Julio -- and the rest of their team. Service was attentive, engaging, professional and, yes, fun! And the evening ends for all with a childhood treat: a signature serving of bubble gum flavored cotton candy. Is it pricey? Yes. Is it worth it? That's for each to decide; for us, yes. And we will come again!

A serious steak offering !!

By RGGold |

Located in the now fashionable South of Market ( SoMa) San Francisco area, this Brannan Street restaurant has a strikingly different approach to the norm when it comes to steak houses. The first difference, there is only steak on the main course menu !! Yes, "you can have the swordfish appetizer as a main course" but that's about it. You come here for a steak and that's what you're going to get and a pretty darn good one at that !! The restaurant has Japanese overtones evident in style and presentation in some first or second courses. This theme abounds on nearly an entire page of Wagyu from all ends of the globe that produces this style of meat but never, ever have I seen so many offerings from Japan itself !! But if this is too rich for your taste, and or pocket, you'll not be disappointed in their filet, conventional or bone in. They were cooked to perfection and of the highest quality. Cured foi gras and tomato tart starters were amazing but the uni toast, braised oxtail with marrow toasted brioche, was out of this world. Of the main course sides we ordered, the caramelized onions stood out so much so, that we had to re order !!! They have a very serious wine list and a Sommelier that thoroughly enjoys his job. This is a serious steak house with a difference. It sets a high bar and a high price with it Take the leap of faith with them, you will not be disappointed!!!

Not as expected

By Carlo P |

I went there to eat a Prime Rib Among the steak house visited , I’m sorry to say that the Prime Rib was not good at all. Full of fat , bad cooked ( I asked medium but was more medium rear) flavorless and cold. They don’t serve backed potato with the rib. The French fries looks like the Mac Donald . I was expecting something more original from a luxury and exclusive place like this. The bill was huge !!! 3 prime rib 20 oz , 1 beer , 1 edamame 221 usd dollars plus 39 tip makes 260 usd bills Other than that : the service was good and the place is beautiful ...maybe was my unlucky day

Hostesses need to be trained

By najataqil |

Food was good as always, but the hostesses were impolite and inefficient to the point that I don’t feel like stepping into this place ever again. This is a restaurant of high standing and I think they should be aware that their staff need training.

Magnificent!

By gwfritz |

We had dinner for five on Saturday evening of Memorial Day weekend. This was a long planned family event and was remarkable in every way. The bar has a wide variety of whiskey's including a deep selection of Bourbons. Service was good. The dinner that followed was outstanding. We the Hon Hamachi which is wonderful sushi dish with Avocado and Serrano. The following course included a Marin Roots salad and the extraordinary Foie Gras Terrine. We followed with the green garlic asparagus soup which is poured table. The group had a variety of steaks with the absolute peak being the selection of Wagyu beef. It was a revelation! We also tried the wild mushroom and fiddlehead ferns as sides. Both very good. The dinner concluded with a pistachio ice cream (not on the menu) and the chocolate soufflé. The perfect ending! The wine was a Pinot Noir suggested by the sommelier and it paired very nicely with the steaks. The finish had a hint of black pepper and worked well. The service was exemplary despite being a busy Saturday night. I strongly recommend the restaurant. It was unforgettable.

Very expensive for Quality

By mom3cat |

My family of 5 adults ate here before Christmas. Our server discussed the Kobe and Wagyu beef as though they were fine wines. I was the only person who ordered fish (black cod) and my husband and daughter agreed that my dish was the best. My son and son-in-law wound up with a steak that was twice the price they thought they were paying, and it was at least half bone. I admit I'm not a steak person anyway, but the sticker shock was major for all of us.

Steak lovers must try this place

By Katrina H |

First time to eat in Alexander’s and my friend and I enjoyed everything we ordered. The hamachi shot as a starter (just one piece as we wanted to save space for our steak) the truffle butter served with the bread was also good and our cocktails were flavourful and strong. Our server recommended the The Greater Omaha Prime Rib Eye (20oz) -medium doneness to share. It had the perfect percentage of fat to meat and was juicy and flavourful plus it went well with the bone marrow we added to it. Save space for the complimentary cotton candy dessert at the end. Pricey, but well worth it and I would come back again to try their other dishes. High recommended!

Exceptional wine at good prices. Excellent meet. We were a group of 4. We found the waiters very friendly and well informed about the items on the menu.

Overpriced

By Monica L |

Beautiful decor and well kept. Please note - the tables near the service table can get busy and unpleasant. Four of us spent over $600. A little pricey but I admit delicious. This place is definitely for very special occasions or for business meetings. Service was excellent. We were definitely pampered. Cork fee was $50 per bottle. A little hefty but the wine we bought was priced at $600 per bottle at the restaurant and to pay $50 for the cork fee was well worth every penny. As well, we had a birthday guest with strict dietary needs, therefore a special cake was ordered from a local bakery. The fee was $2.50 per person. The steaks were all well done. Attention was definitely paidl to the doneness desired and the presentation. We ordered the Wagyu Hokkaido Japan to share as an appetizer for $160. We were presented with palates of salts from around the world to try. Even though it was an expensive indulge but it was worth the experience.

Pricey Place

By debora p |

There was 5 of us that went Saturday night for a Birthday celebration and all of us were expecting the best, considering the kind of money we were about to drop. But it failed to impress me or anyone else in the group. The food took a long time and we were at the table a good 30 minutes before bread was even brought out. The sides with the exception of the fries were exceptionally small. When the food finally came, the steaks were all tepid. I will say that our waitress was very attentive, The staff was very professional throughout our visit, thanks for that! Overall, our dinner bill for 5 was over $1,000. If you have an expense account you may want to try it.

The Best of everything

We went for a birthday party this past October 2014 and we are still talking about the place. We have never ever had such wonderful service and the prime rib was well we will never have a meal like that again - anywhere. this place is an absolute gem and I highly recommend you go there. We all left an extra tip ! I'd go back in a giffy.

Special occasion ruined by a really bad steak

By goamazon |

We went there on a very special occasion , and thorouly enjoyed the long evening we spent there. The service was impeccable, and the waiters at least two at all times were very attentive to all questions and compliments. The appetisers, the salads, the display was out of this world, Wien list was extensive and expensive as was the menu. Don't come her if your worried about the cost. The unfortunate part for me was being uncomfortable about complaining in front of my guests that the steak they served me was almost inedible. Everyone had the Kobe of course, but I ten toward a good old fashioned rib eye best of the beef as I say. order a 16 oz rib eye rare and I expect it to be at least two inches thick. this thing was fatty, stringy, thin and over cooked. Embarrassingly bad . IF you go there, insist they bring the steak to your table before you let them cook it for you. I probably won;t be giving them a second chance, too many other places know better.

Very disappointing and crazily overpriced

By Martin J |

Visited a couple of nights ago. The restaurant itself was quiet and we got sat at a booth way away from other guests. The restaurant was freezing cold. An issue with the air con unit. We had to eat with our coats on. The starters were tiny and very, very expensive. We ordered 2 of the most expensive Wagyu steaks. The portions were ridiculously small. The whole plate including accompaniments was tiny. Smaller than even a child’s plate of food and for $169-$189 was just shocking. The service was good and friendly and we left a good tip accordingly. They did remove a side to apologise for the freezing cold temperature. Our meal cost nearly $600 for 2 people. We had 2 tiny starters. 2 tiny steaks. 3 sides and water… for $600. Absolutely crazy.

Very good steak selection.

By Lester L |

The steaks at Alexander's are very good and prepared very well. Sides are a la carte. They have a good selection of different cuts as well as a selection of Wagyu beef. The quality and level of food and service are delivered here.

Best steakhouse experience ever

By Thomas R |

I see some disappointed people which is really different from my experience. I was there on a Sunday evening. Ambiance: very nice, dimmed lights, not too loud, I like the open kitchen, there was a bit of a draft from the AC, but nothing we bothered mentioning. Service: absolutely perfect. The staff was knowledgeable about the food and wine. Friendly and efficient without being a pain in the axx, like you see at many U.S. High end places. Food: I had the 14oz prime rib and it's definitely one of the best pieces of meat I have ever had. Tender, juicy, perfectly seasoned...yummy! Price: expensive! But considering what we got in terms of food, complementary candy-cone and experience, it was worth it! I wouldn't go there everyday, but once in a while is ok. I will definitely go again though!

Mesmerizing and spectacular

By mlsrar |

The presentation of the food, the incredible variety of Wagyu they had on their menu, along with the constant stream of chef-compliment aperitifs made this an exceptional dining experience that I will never forget. Foie Gras is the best I've ever had.

Classy Steak Place in San Francisco

By Indian-Gastronome |

Been to this place twice in the last 6 months and really enjoy the steak, the service and the experience here. The steak choice is amazing, its cooked well, tastes divine. The place is expensive and you need to book in advance but the experience is classy.

Wow

Amazing food, impeccable service. The food is expensive but well worth it. Wine list is impressive...they have wines from everywhere.

Just Appearances...

By Anais A |

We booked a last minute New Year's Eve prix fixe dinner reservation, and you had to wonder why it was still open because for almost a thousand dollars, we had these tiny servings of food, which were not memorable - only the wine was. We got to taste a tiny morsel of Wagyu steak - it tasted like butter - if this is what you like of your steak, and a morsel was enough. Simply, just too rich to consume more. Not everyone like all that fat on their steaks. You will no doubt end up with a heart attack. The place's decor is average - not much to accommodate the expensive prices. I believe there are other steakhouses that would give you better value for your hard earned money. Not worth it afterall.

Great food

By danielhH2753LF |

Fabulous time and food. Must try. Desserts are modern and like nothing I ever tried. I will be talking about for weeks

Very good food, disproportionate prices and presentation

By Patangbaz |

Food without doubt is very good in this restaurant and the wine selection is also superb. However, i found the way the food is presented disproportionate (every morsel of side dishes can only be described as fantastic by the service) and the same adjective applies to the prices.

A very good steakhouse

By likeeat |

A group of us ate dinner here. The service was the high point of the experience. I had a steak that was cooked exactly as I asked and tender. But to me, there were a couple of negatives. First, the decor was bland (at least where we were seated). Second, the food is overpriced, even for SF.

Best steaks

By adrball44 |

The steaks and fish were very sumptous,Service was a refresher.Nice place to dine and relax and great atmosphere.

Surprisingly veg-friendly

By Sara |

A friend invited me to Alexander's Steakhouse. I was hesitant as a vegan because... well it's a steakhouse! But the staff accommodated my requests and even gave me and my friend (non-veg) special items just for us. The food was delicious, atmosphere was upscale, staff were attentive and friendly. The food was unique as it was visually appealing.

Simply the Best

By DavidVa999 |

I had the Kumamoto Wagyu and it was incredibly good. If you have never had Wagyu like this you have to try it. It is totally unlike a traditional steak. It does cost about $120 for 3 ounces, but it is an experience. The staff is unbelievably knowledgeable. Ask for them to bring out a few cuts of the uncooked wagyu for you to look at it and he will do so and explain the differences, where they come from, etc... That was part of the experience. The somm was amazing as well. We asked him how he would describe our wine and he went into the full somm evaluation process similar to the movie Somm. Another experience. I loved everything about this restaurant.

Very poor experience and food

By Manuel P |

Steak house??? Really? Steak is horrible, hard, smelly (like stable), over cooked. I had like 300 USD in 3 different cuts, none was good I mean not even a 6 from a 1 to 10 scale. Service was really bad! We had starters and 40 minutes after the brought our steaks! They said they had some basketball players on a big table !! So? I’m also paying the same !!!!! How can they say this? It’s absurd. Over priced, horrible steak taste and bad bad bad service. Don’t go there, you’ll waste your money. It’s not worth it. Desserts taste savory !!! We had a chocolate soufflé that tasted like omelette!!!! Very bad

Fantastic steak.. you must try it

By EnglandGrumpy |

It’s not the cheapest but the flavours were my favourite The service was great, servers had lots of energy and personality. Wine is pricey so pick wisely and safe

Delicious but expensive

By Sheriff60 |

The filet mignon was delicious, melt in your mouth and perfectly cooked. The sides are very good but extra. The other steaks on the menu were priced out of this world. Service was extra attentive and the ambiance very nice though the booths for four were cramped. Bottom line, if you're prepared for a hefty bill, worth the trip.

High End Steak House

By Bob L |

Gosh, This is one of those restaurants that pays attention to all the details and is definitely 1st class. Our service was outstanding. Steaks were excellent, wine the same. I will reserve this location for special locations. Very expensive. Traditional Oriental style. So don't look for a Caesar salad on the menu or a fresh bread basket on the table. Portions are small but high quality.

Lovely

This was an adventure

By kmckee3730 |

it was late on a Friday night and using a variety of restaurant apps, found this place, we actually found street parking - ind Downtown SF - it was 10:00 and the place was jumping - the food is awesome and incredibly expensive - but - once a while..... son Scott found a $35 filet as opposed to the $350 tomahawk whatever - they brought us amuse bouche to begin with and then another at the end of the meal. the best service ever. wait staff in suits no less and very professional.

Too many amazing restaurants in SF to be this mediocre

By pamela v |

I have amazing memories from when I went to Alexander’s over 8 years ago. The service was impeccable and the menu and presentation of the food felt new and interesting. I went with a group the other night to celebrate a special occasion. I recommended we go there because of my previous experience there. I regretted going there as soon as I sat down. We had a rotation of many different servers who were all wearing dirty, mismatched, ill fitting suits. It was almost like they all showed up and had to borrow someone else’s clothes. Which, who cares?! As long as service is great why would you notice those details? Because service was horrible. They kept bringing us dishes and serving the wrong person; steaks were not cooked at temperatures we had requested; drinks were not correct; one of our guests had to wait for 20 minutes while we ate because of the incorrect meal. If we were not paying $200+per person then I’d over look it and wouldn’t write a petty review. But if you charge for impeccable service prices and excellent food then you need to deliver that. And not only that but to add insult to injury our bill was incorrect and we were over charged! Oh yes...and the menu is outdated and reminiscent of what was edgy a decade ago. Cotton candy was cute in 2010. I’ll never go back and I am embarrassed I took my friends there. There are too many excellent restaurants in SF.

AMAZING in every way!!!

By Ric O |

We arrived a few minutes early from our reservation and was greeted so warmly by the hostess. We were immediately seated and greeted again for the normal set up - drinks, etc. Our server for the evening came and went through the menu and explained the processes of selections. He gave us time to decide and then we were served one of the most delicious steaks I have ever had. The atmosphere was romantic and quiet but not dreary in any way and it seemed a little overwhelming that the wait staff was as attentive as they were. I walked away having a great experience along with my husband having a marvelous time and one that I would recommend to anyone who is looking for the very finest dining and the absolute most delicious food I have ever had. I have dined at some of the finest venues in the U.S. from time to time but have never had such a lovely experience. My hat is off to the General Manager as well as the staff for providing such a nice event. Thank you.

Absolutely the BEST

By Nancy R |

OK, so if you have read some of my reviews, you already know that I like and appreciate many different kinds, styles of cuisine. That said, Alexander's is a steakhouse and is by far my favorite restaurant in SF. I know - steaks? - yes, because it is amazing. Not only do you get (and need) an explanation of the available steaks before you order, but there is always a twist on the banal. It is not your average steakhouse. It takes a meal to an entirely different level. True, it may be considered by some to be a bit over the top in terms of steak sold in 3 ounce increments, but honestly the Prime Rib (($50 when we were there) is to die for so you don't have to go for the most expensive cuts on the menu. The service is terrific and the wines both wide and deep in choice. This restaurant demands your attention at least once - and you will be hooked if you try it. A note, they do not have the cotton candy at the SF location any more (what a teaser, right?) but they do have it at the other locations (or so we were told). Also the appetizers and desserts are well worth a try (I dare you to choose just one!) Although Alexander's is wickedly expensive, and the clientele is obviously techy, it is nonetheless a wonderful venue for a special occasion or when showing out of town guests why no other city compares to SF in cuisine. Alexander's is my favorite Sf restaurant! Enjoy!

Amazing

By MeT1nT2 |

I eat a steak once a year so it has to be good when I do -- and this was. Great experience -- not cheap by my Midwest standards... But well worth it. Lots of little samples which were generally amazing (the duck fat custard not so much -- but three different breads in small portions, and the side of Brussels sprouts was amazing as was the twice scalloped potato). The waiter was knowledgable which was helpful -- they have a Japanese take and a selection of smaller regional wines. If you don't mind spending some money on a great dining red meat experience I don't think you can go wrong here!

R.O.

By Shelly B |

RIP off! Very over priced, the staff were trained like robots, they talked sooooo quickly couldn’t understand half of what they had to say. The food was very disappointing, I choose the squid for a starter, interesting flavours but cold and over cooked, the mains I choose the burger which arrived cold as well. They gave us a complementary dessert of a chocolate soufflé, when it arrived it looked very promising, they poured hot sauce over the top, theatrical but it was raw in the middle, and the green candy floss on a stick was really tasteless and unnecessary.

Excellent food, extremely expensive

By Federico G |

We had several delicious starters and a T-bone steak. The food was really fantastic, but the price was really really high. You must try it once, but I wouldn't return regularly.

Good steak!

By Winnifer L |

We love aged prime steak. So we have very high standard and expectation. Appetizers were so good. Service is amazing and love the passion fruit cotton candy at the end. They gave us a small desert to congratulate my son. Finally..what we came for - porterhouse steak is very tender but not as charred as I liked. But still tasty. Very pricey @$140 for porterhouse steak and it not for two people! Good to try none the less.

Best Prime Rib in America

We were visiting San Francisco and read reviews of this great dining establishment. We walked away very impressed. The prime rib was absolutely off the charts. Best ever. Highly recommend.

Excellent Steaks! Nice Wine List! Great Service!

By Tim K |

My family of 5 dined here and we had a great meal. We ordered the steaks and everyone enjoyed them. We had a round of cocktails before dinner and my manhattan was a nice pour. I started dinner with the red leaf lettuce with bacon and bleu cheese. For my entree I chose the 8 oz. filet and it was cooked perfectly. The bordelaise and chive sauce was a nice accompaniment. I also had a side of the chanterelle mushrooms which went very nicely with the steak. The wine list had Jordan cabernet which is one of my favorite wines. Service was impeccable. The decor is tasteful and not over the top. The restaurant was very clean. You can watch the open kitchen work from your table. We took and Uber to and from without problem. I would go back!

Wow, wow and wow

A friend brought us here when we visited SF. Excellent service, great food. A bit pricey, but definitely worth it if you can afford it!

Best fillet ever. Expensive but very good

By John |

Special treat with the wife who likes fillet and wasn't disappointed. The reception was great. Chris our server could not do more. Excellent shared salad starter. 6oz Kobi Fillet for the wife. Cooked perfectly and she loved it. I had the 22 oz bone in strip. Excellent. Side of green beans really good and fries ok but a wider choice would be good. Maybe big chips etc. dessert of soufflé was excellent. One small point is the wine prices. Ouch ouch and double ouch. Still otherwise great and will go back for another special treat. Packed so clearly popular.

Excellent Wagyu and staff

By Einar A |

I came here for one reason and one reason only. The Wagyu beef. This place is expensive and I would recommend reserving a table in advance. If you want to try the Waguy you should be prepared to spend at least a couple of hundreds of dollars on your meal. That being said, the staff was superb. Our waiter explained the history and geography of each type of beef, with recommendations and fun facts. The beef itself is tiny. For the Waguy you pay per 3oz of meat, so that is what I ordered. It was small, but super delicious. You get 12 different types of salt to try with your meat. The sides were tasty as well. Everything is ordered separately though. We had some starters too that were quite nice. I wouldn't say they expect a dress code here, but we did feel kind of like bums sitting there in only t-shirts when everybody else were in suits. They have some other, non-Japanese, steaks here too, but I didn't try those so I cannot comment on that. They are much bigger though, so if you are starving and don't have a bottomless wallet, you might want to get a normal steak. For a once in a lifetime and if you can afford it, I would try the Wagyu here.

Steaks just okay and very expensive.

By Chris F |

We park in the lot just up the street when going to games at AT&T Park (Oracle Park now) and walk by Alexander’s all the time. We’ve observed the menu and could see it to be very expensive but wanted to try it someday. We went on May 17 with our group of 5. We had some fresh oysters on the half shell and 2 small fillets of Wagyu to start along with a round of drinks. My wife ordered the NY Steak at $86 and I ordered the Porterhouse steak at $116. For sides the table ordered 2 mashed potato dishes at $26 each, sautéed mushrooms at $16, snap peas at $17 and a side of fries at $14. We thought the servers and wait staff were excellent and very informative. We thought the bartenders were outstanding as well. The price of the food was super expensive and was not that amazing for what you received. My wife’s NY steak was very good; the Porterhouse that I ordered was actually quite grisly. The sides were quite tasty but $52 for 2 small dishes of mashed potato is pretty ridiculous. We don’t regret going and came away with a memory but would not eat there again. The check for our party of 5 was around $950. Yikes!

No complaints, would definitely return again.

Good experience

Went with some business associates after Giants game. Parking was very convenient to the restaurant. Neighborhood is still a bit questionable, We were greeted promptly at the door for our 5:30 reservation but had to wait until 5:50 for them to seat people. We were only able to get water in this time as the bartender was busy. We were seated at a very tight table for four. Our server was courteous and made many suggestions. The Pinot Noir he recommended was excellent. The Maple Manhattan was very good. The signature cocktails are overpriced even for San Francisco. We each ordered a different steak off the menu and we were pleased with all of them. Service was definitely slow. There was lots of activity we could see in the exhibition kitchen so not sure what the delay was. Service at other Alexander's is much quicker. We ordered three sides that were good and we could not finish. We tried three desserts and they were artistic but very overpriced. The server made a point of telling us about the opening of their new unique restaurants in Union Square. It took three requests to get our check. The decor is interesting (upscale warehouse) and the tables are cramped. The restrooms are located up the at the top of a staircase. Interesting that the tables on the upper level were not being used this night. The bar was comfortable for seating and had many tables.

If your dinner doesn't give you a heart attack, the bill will!

This is a unique Japanese-influcenced steakhouse with attentive service, but it is not extraordinary enough to warrant the extortionate price tag. It is very easy to spend $200/person without even entertaining a conversation with the sommelier. Observations: 1. Declining the waiter's menu suggestions should not be met with an expression of utter defeat. 2. A three digit Waygu steak should not be served with a palette of a dozen finishing salts from around the world. It's cute - don't get me wrong. It is also overweening, unnecessary and gimmicky. How about stay on theme and serve it with some wasabi to counteract the richness of the steak? 3. The final course of the evening is a feathery cloud of cotton candy served with the bill. How apt that after finishing the wispy bits of sugar, you are left with a small paper cone - the perfect metaphor for all he money that has been funneled out of your wallet this evening.

Bad customer service and overpriced

We were a party of 6 on October 1. We had reserved for 20:00. As we were running late due to traffic, we called them at 19;45 to mention we would be a bit late and asked them if we could arrive at 20:30 instead of 20:00. We were strickly told that was not possible and 20:15 was the latest we could arrive. So we rushed and made it in time for 20:15 to realized the place was far from full...... Service was good as the steaks but appetizers and sides were ridicusly small and extremely expensive (as the steaks...) I am a regular client of american steakhouses but Alexanders is really way pricier and not worth it. I do not recommend Luc

Steakhouse

By jqbug |

My husband and I went to Napa/San Fran to celebrate my birthday. On our last night in San Fran we celebrated my birthday here and my steak and bottle of wine was delicious to say the least. I wish the portions of the sides would’ve been a little bigger and better selection of deserts. I do like the fact that day gave me and my husband a glass of champagne and handwritten card wishing me a happy birthday with tiny piece of desert that was a nice touch.

Good steakhouse, a bit off the beaten track

By JimSanDieg0 |

Great reputation and great service and wine selection. A number of us had the 50/50 filet, which was billed as an unusual combination of 50% Wagyu and 50% Holstein, which was supposed to make the filet even better than normal. Well, it didn't. I'd stick with the traditional options like the ribeye or the regular Wagyu (all are expensive here). I've had great meals here, this one wasn't quite up to that standard due to the recommended filet.

A Carnivor's Best Steak Ever

By H V L S |

Having made a small detour from London to Florida via San Francisco to see my stepdaughter, her family and their new house, I wanted to take them out for dinner to a good restaurant where I too would enjoy the food. Foie Gras and a good steak being among my fabourites, I picked Alexander's Steak House in San Francisco rather with a pin. This was no mistake. I had one of the best if not the best steak I had during a three week visit in the United States involving eating many steaks! We were welcomed and taken to a spacious table. I saw there was a a "Bite" of cold Fois Gras on the menu and asked if I could have a warm escalope which was not on the menu. There was no problem with this and I was given what was hardly an excalope but a rather large - if not too large - what should be described as a "lobe". It was delicious but could have done with being presented with a fig or some other sweet fruit chutney. We all had steaks of one sort or another, all stated to be really first class - I shall not single out any particular one: in any event the menu keeps changing. Starters and, puddings and service could not be faulted. I sincerely hope to visit again. Caveat: Aleaxander's Steak House is not cheap - certainly not by UK standards, and some of the steaks are very highly priced, but if you want quality you have to pay for it! With some pre-meal drinkks and but one bottle of a medium wine my bill came to $660 = £540.

Perfect Birthday Celebration

One of the best steakhouses in the city! Perfectly done prime rib. And amazing sides. The service was impeccable and over the top desserts and other added birthday celebration surprises for my friend, Pricey but worth it!

Alexander’s Steakhouse

By Thomas S |

Alexander’s Steakhouse has a warm and inviting decor. The service is good. Alexander’s serves imported Japanese A5 and A4 steak. The portions are riducously small and very expensive. The cost per person is about $200. Having eaten Japanese A5 and A4 steak many times in Japan the experience of eating at Alexanders left me feeling disappointed. The steak is excellently cooked and presented but thenserving the size of a piece of sushi was underwhelming. If you’ve never tasted real Japanese steak you can try it at Alexander’s. The cost of eating at Alexander’s is comparable to what you’d pay in Japan for 1st class Teppanyaki dinner. Alexander’s has a deep and expensive wine list. Lastly, the menu is alscarte. Alexander’s is interesting to try but I doubt that I’ll go back again mostly due to the serving sizes.

Extremely Disappointing... I do not recommend.

While on a business trip, I was very excited to try this restaurant. With all the wonderful reviews it must be good right? Wrong. Very Wrong. Myself as well as my Boss had very high hopes as we entered this restaurant scene. The location was fair and the building was very well designed. We sat down for dinner and were treated kindly, but as if we had never eaten a piece of meat in our lives. I can say the same when we were choosing a wine for our dinner; once again the servers acted as if we were children. We looked past this and waited for our first course. I can go on for hours about our story, I will make it quick and easy: 1. The salad was bitter and awful. 2. The meat was fair in taste but did not meet the size that was stated on the menu. 3. The glasses and cutlery were dirty and stunk. 4. The steak knives did not cut! 5. The portions were EXTREMELY small (not at all worth the money we paid). Overall, we were very unsatisfied with our meals and paid a hefty price for nothing more than a fun-sized dining experience.

Awesome Alexander’s, SF

By aresverde |

Three of us went last night—my younger son, who is a chef in his own right, his wife who is my daughter-in-law, and me. None of us had ever been to this restaurant. Turned out for all 3 of us to be one of the best dining experiences we’ve had in SF. By far the best steak dining. I’ve previously dined at Alexander’s Steakhouse in Pasadena 5 times with food and wine friends, with mixed results ranging from one super dining experience to several just average and one just plain bad experience. Mostly we had problems with the quality of the food and service at the Pasadena branch. Last night in SF was way better. We ordered and shared: appetizers of foie gras and soft shell blue crab, entree’s of filet mignon, Flannery Porterhouse and Miyagi Sendai Wagyu, sides of wild mushrooms and Shichimi fries. We brought and opened 2 bottles of wine: 2011 Raveneau Montee and 1998 Beaucastel, after starting with glasses of their nonvintage champagne. What was good: everything. But the Wagyu was most amazing, probably the tastiest I’ve had in the USA, incredible marbling and flavor, served with the equivalent of an artist’s palette of 12 salts. The Flannery Porterhouse was a huge double cut piece of delicious meat and flavor. The filet was another very fine piece of meat, tender and flavorful. Bread was served with incredible butter made with bone marrow and honey, Service started a little slow at first—they were fully booked—but ended on a high note. Food and wine servers were definitely friendly, knowledgeable, high quality. Ambiance is very fine—the space is large, a big noisy, and attractive—set in an old warehouse. The energy was exciting and upbeat. All in, we can’t wait to go back. Bravo!

Average

By cheflefranc |

The service is excellent and the Porterhouse for two is amazing. All starters and all side dishes were great as well ... but all the main dishes with the exception of the Porterhouse were average. The ribeye was so thin it reminded me of Longhorn and the fish fillet was small and lacked seasoning.

Extravagant but Great Steak

By R1KCX |

Recommended by our concierge. Impeccable reception welcome and service thoughout our visit. This is a top notch restaurant to cater for the more well heeled clientele. Wide choice of drinks, cocktails, wines on offer and the steak - the steak!! There is choice of the best cuts and meat in the world. I had a T-bone at $96 and my wife a filet at $70 and both were cooked and presented immaculately. Try the Macaroni Cheese and the Creamed Corn as sides, you will not be disappointed. This steakhouse competes favourably with the best in London (Goodmans, Goucho Grill) so if it's exclusivity and refinement you are after, this place is for you. Downsides? You are going to pay a minimum of $150 for two people but to really enjoy the experience (we didn't take a bottle of wine and just had mains and coffee) you are going to be lighter by $300 by the end. The cheapest available cut was Prime Rib 14oz or 20oz but this had 'sold out' by 8:30pm. This forced you to select another cut above $50 or $60. This did not include any sides. On balance, you get what you pay for and this steak house does do it very very well!

Exceptional

By david e |

One of my best steakhouse experiences - and I have eaten at a lot! A really interesting Japanese theme runs through the menu which really makes the food exceptional. The choice of beef cuts are rare and widely researched by the team here - check out the olive fed option on the menu. They have a whole page of half bottle wines which makes s solo dinner so much better. And the coffee is also really interesting (see photo) which keeps things interesting until the end. The service from the reception, bar staff and sommelier were exceptional and whilst expensive I left thinking I had for great value. Can’t wait to go back on next trip to San Fran.

The service is impeccable, but the food is not worth it!

By RomanzaAmore |

The service is beyond compare and that is why I gave it a three rating. The menu is very different. We started with the Mangalitsa Pork Terrine, I would not recommend it. It was a raw bacon blended into a paste. My boyfriend had the bone in filet, no better than anywhere else. I had the Wagyu Lone Mountain Ranch U.S., I have had filet mignon for half the price that was more tender and had more flavor. The sides were very good, but we were there for the beef.

Wonderful and expensive

By Alex S |

This is a place you want to go for a special occasion as it's very expensive (even for SF standards). Service is impeccable and the place is nice and cozy. Appetiser options were good bit nothing I would have died for. Instead, meat was excellent, with amazing cut of great steaks that you can possibly get lost in the choices. As for me, I rather have a succulent t-bone or great steak vs micro portion of Wagyu coming at 300$ per couple of bites. Worthing? Yes but maybe once per year...

A special romantic and tasty evening

My wife and me celebrated our 40th anniversary at this fantastic steakhouse. The steaks dishes were huge and excellent. The atmosphere was romantic and the service excellent as well. Recommended for special event (or open account...).

A steakhouse with style

By TStan91 |

The service is the best I've had in San Francisco! Great job. The menu was fascinating with all the different steak and where they came from. The wine list was excellent, the food was fantastic. The salts were incredible. If you have the means, this is an extravagance worth trying. Fantastic!

A great independent steakhouse

By tonyjames4040 |

This is one of those very good independent US steakhouses. A little out of the way but when you get there you are in for a very good experience. Couldn't fault it from start to finish.

Beyond 5 Stars!

By AbfSailor |

I eat at a nice steakhouse in every big city I go to. I have a very complex rating system for each. I'll leave out the finer details and keep the review at a reasonable length. This one earns a 5 STAR ... Here's why. The service and presentation at this restaurant was amazing. They were on spot with everything. Water choices, (free food, "compliments of the chef"), making sure we were okay, food timing and delivery, cleaning the table in-between courses, knowledge of the menus, seating us on time, food presentation, unique dish-ware, and a very friendly staff. The food was cooked perfect. The Australian Wagyu was amazing, I've had it before at other restaurants and this was very comparable to every other experience. Worth the price. The Wagyu steak also came with a variety of 12 salts that you could apply to it. They were great! (I applied a little bit of each salt to different slices.) Even though in reality it didn't need any salt. The steak was perfect as it was. The sides were big enough to split between two people. Same with the desert. There is to much to say, but overall... This place was in the Very Fine Dining category. It was very expensive, but I was okay with it. "You get what you pay for" at this place. I would definitely go here again. Thanks for the great food and service!

Came For My Wife's Birfday

Anybody who complains about this restaurant is either broke or used to Sizzler. Place was excellent...no pretense...fine dining without being snobby or condescending! Yeah if you come here be prepared to spend some money. If not stay at home that isn't a crime. Ask for Barry while you are here!!!!

Tasting menu

We opted for the tasting menu. Nice surprise and I ate things that I wouldn't normally have tasted! The meat is fantastic! Great taste experience in a beautiful setting with excellent service! The cotton candy at the end, I found that very cool!
