Delicious Greek Food and Great Value For Your Money!

By AnnieStormborn |

My friend and I went here for dinner, and wow, we had a wonderful time! We ordered a spanakopita, beef kabob platter (with rice, soup and salad) and baklava for dessert. Everything was delicious! Their house wine was also decent, and for only $2.25, they gave me a full glass. Service was friendly and efficient. The place was cozy, and perfect for a low-key night. I would definitely go back here often. I'm so glad this cafe is right in my neighborhood.

Very tasty

By John S |

First time venturing into the Hillcrest area. There was actually street parking! Anyway, Alexi's is for sure a small place. But the food is great. Went with my son, he had the gyro plate and I has the Mediterranean special. All the dinners come with soup and a small Greek salad. We were stuffed, no room for dessert unfortunately. Less that $25 soft drinks and tip included. Can't beat that for San Diego, or California for that matter. Great service too. Will definitely go back next time I'm in town.

Great food, great portions, very welcoming host!

We saw this place had great reviews so we decided to give it a try. The employees were very welcome and attentive and took care of us and our children. If you are looking for a great place that feels like home, and has great food, this is a place for you! We would definitely return!

wonderful Greek meal!

By Kendra00 |

We were visiting San Diego, found the great area of Hillcrest, and chose this place for dinner. It was great with kids, very well priced, and great food! The hummus was wonderful, the gyros dinner had great flavor, and the chicken souvlaki was excellent. A great choice for casual dinner!

Best cheap meal in town!

By Eurojet |

No visit to San Diego is complete until you've visited the hip and chic neighborhood of Hillcrest, where diversity is the name of the game. There are plenty of more expensive and frou frou options in regard to eating a meal there, but if you want some delicious, inexpensive, fresh, and hot food, then THIS is the spot. The owner/chef/server is a character worthy of his own sitcom. He never writes anything down, has, the driest sense of humor ever, and is never stingy with his use of feta. For less than a 10 dollar bill, you will leave satisfied, and perhaps even with a doggy bag of leftovers. This is a must see restaurant, and you will not leave disappointed.

Good Greek food in San Diego

By Gemin |

The small restaurant was excellent. The server was attentive to our needs and the food was good. We enjoyed the fish and chips, a filo/spinach/cheese dish and a chicken gyro. All meals came with lots of extras. They were used to small children and we would go back.

Great Original Greek Taberna Food

By Wayne G |

Try Alexi's on 5th Avenue in San Diego. The menu is inexpensive and has most of the Greek delights you would find in a Taberna in Greece. George, the manager and chef, makes the best Greek Giros and other delights imaginable. It's a great place anytime for a quick bite between 11:30 am and 10 pm everyday. Quality and prices far exceed the local Greek chains. They even carry Greek beers !!

What a find!

By Stevelor |

This place was found by sheer luck while me and my family were roaming around trying to find somewhere to eat. As someone who is part Greek i do often struggle to want to go to a Greek restaurant/cafe as my standards are set far to high for obvious reasons but this place drew me in because it served a soup i grew up on: Avgolemono. This soup, while extremely lovely, is difficult to find on menus so this place was special. For roughly $12 each we had a starter, main and drinks (be it wine or soda). The gentleman who served our party of 8 remembered everything we ordered, the food was prompt, delicious and the overall service impeccable. I really couldn't praise this establishment enough. For $12 a head to eat the food we had, felt uncomfortable but me more than made up for it with a good tip. Please give this cafe a go,you won't be disappointed. Ps- please serve Drahana!!!

The food and service are very good. It is not a high end restaurant but a small sort of cafe. It is perfect for stop and go meal.

Filling and cheap!

By SimeyTravels |

This cafe has become one of our favorite local spots. How can you not love a hearty meal for less than $9 in this day and age? Our first time visiting, we popped in and placed our order at the counter. It was almost empty when we arrived - just one family of 6 at a table - but the restaurant filled up to capacity while we waited. My first meal was the Greek Chicken dinner, and my husband got the Spanakopita dinner. My second meal was the Gyros plate, and my husband got the Mediterranean Dinner Special, which is chicken souvlaki and gyro. Now, that might not sound like a lot of food, but each meal comes with a cup of soup (of the day, we've had both the Avgolemono and split pea), a small Greek salad with just gobs of feta, fries, pita and rice. In *addition to* the protein you've chosen! It's a ton of food, and our meals have been fresh and flavorful. The only not-so-pleasant thing I've experienced has to do with their cucumbers. In my first meal, the cucumbers were so bitter I actually had to spit the piece I was chewing on out. My husband didn't have any issues with his, so I thought it was just a one-off thing. However, on our second meal, a tentative nibble of the cucumber piece was once again proven to be too bitter to consume. I'm not sure what that's about, but it's gotten to the point where I just remove the chunks from my salad without even trying to taste it. We've never actually eaten inside the restaurant - all of our meals have been to go. The place is kind of small - made even smaller by distancing restrictions - but I will say it seems to get very hot in there, very quickly.

Good food and value

The food was great. The prices reasonable. The owner provided good service. The falafel was tasty but a little hard to eat.

Delicious Mediterranean plate

By SGTL |

We were starving and just randomly saw this place so we decided to give it a try. It’s not anything fancy just a little family hole in the wall place but the owner was so friendly. The food was so good! Everything was made fresh and homemade. The tzatziki sauce was amazing. It was probably the best Greek plate I’ve had. I would recommend the Mediterranean plate. It has the lamb, chicken and pita bread with soup and salad with it. It was a good price too!

Huge Servings.

By Clio H |

The Greek Dinner Special included a small bowl of good split pea soup. Then came a Greek salad followed by gyros of lamb which was dry, souvlaki of chicken, spanokopita with taziki. This would have been enough however it also came with rice, chips & pita! I left these. This Cafe is like a little roadside cafe in Greece with the usual adornments. However it lacks the service...it is not owner operated. One experience is enough for me.

Good place for a tasty lunch

By ggcaiazzo |

Wonderful place for a quick bite. Reasonable and tasty Greek food. This is a no frills place but worth it. The staff is friendly and there is no doubt that most of the patrons are regulars.

Fabulous Greek food, easy on the wallet.

By SusanAndLance |

Authentic, delicious, inexpensive, fabulous! This is as real Greek food, easy to walk to, lots of locals, and oh so good! Wishing them well as the owner/chef/ busser/ host is a one man operation, but he does it right!

Great Greek Food

By johnmK4883LR |

I had the chicken kabob dinner and it was excellent. They also give a salad and soup with the meal, which was very cheap.

Great Greek!

We really enjoyed the dinner combination special. It included soup and salad. The owner/manager is friendly and makes the somewhat old atmosphere much nicer by his personality.

Great Deal for Greek Food

By Kathy D |

This place is so inexpensive, it's hard to believe because of the area of town where it is, which can be pricey. The man who I think is the owner and the cook, kicks butt. He never stops moving. And the service is fast. Good Greek food and lots of it.

Good, inexpensive Greek food.

By Kathy D |

I think this place is family owned and it has been here for a long time. We were there on a Tuesday night, and the place was packed. It is because you get a lot of food, good food, cheap! Dinner plates include soup, salad, entree, pita and tzaiki,(sp?) rice, and french fries. A lot of carbs, but you can take it home and eat it later. I have also had their Greek salads which are excellent.

Fast bites

Greek fast food. Local hangout, liked by expatriates. The food was okay, but they have a hard time with specialty needs like gluten free, or no lettuce.

The best value and most welcoming greek restaurant in San Diego

By mopsos |

The food represents the typical greek american style, beginning with Hero sandwiched to authentic greek offerings one rarely finds stateside. Alex offers the best lunch deal in San Diego, with a burger or hero, fries and drink for 5.99! Worth a stop.

Excellent value in a small urban Greek cafe

By davidcatcohen |

When I'm in San Diego, I like to stop at Alexi's for a great Greek meal. The food is top notch, the service friendly. All plates come with homemade soup and a tasty Greek salad. I like the chicken kabobs as well as the moussaka. Sometimes the owner's mother is there giving this place a real sense of character. All this at a bargain price. This one-man operation is a real find.

I could eat there everyday

By Paula B |

The prices are low and the food is o good. If the meatloaf is available try it. The owner who runs the kitchen is fantastic.

A Favorite Greek Restaurant in Hillcrest

By Wayne G |

From the time we lived in the neighborhood until now, Alexi's has been a favorite stop for gyros and Greek beer for lunch. They have an extensive menu of Greek items sure to please everyone. George manages to make your stay fun and tasty.

Real Greek Food- casual dining

By Mark D |

The food is delicious.. My wife cooks a lot of Greek food and she fully approved. It’s not a fancy restaurant. It is extremely affordable. George the owner is a wonderful man to talk to.
