German Bratwurst Food Cart in Portland

By ebcnaz |

We met the owner and a brat. She is from Germany. The Brats were ok, not memorable. It was interesting to get the story but the brat didn't light me up enough to come back.

The smell reeled me in...

As we walked around trying to decide what to choose from with many choices from the food carts on the block, the smell of the garlic brats would not leave me alone. I ordered garlic brat/grilled onions and my son had the garlic brat/kraut. We were not disappointed. The service is very friendly, the food was great! A fun and tasty afternoon in Portland

Highly recommended

We were encouraged to visit based on a Midwesterner's recommendation. The friendly owner offers small tables & chairs next to his truck. This is a plus as the pod itself has limited seating to enjoy a meal. My companion & I tried brat combos. The garlic brats and sauerkraut were perfectly grilled. Tasty, slightly spicy baked beans as well as mouthwatering German potato salad rounded out the combo. Highly recommended by we Midwesterners too!

Absolutely Awesome!

Best Brat

By Mike S |

Being half German I had to try the brat at Altengartz while cruising all the food trucks in downtown Portland. One of the best brats I've eaten; lean, tender and flavorful! Add grilled onions, kraft and spicy mustard and you've met heaven of the wurst! My vegetarian daughter raved about the vegetarian brat made from chickpeas and we'll seasoned. Pass by the other trucks and cone here.

That was really good!

- Single brat with grilled onions. Unique taste. Quite fresh. Much like I've found on trips to Wisconsin. Excellent! - Potato salad, American style. Yummy! -Four bean salad. Homemade I'd guess. Tasted that way. Really good. If it's sunny and warm, take your food over to Directors Park for a picnic lunch.

Brat'n in the rain

This was the first cart we saw as we crossed the street to the pod. We walked the entire block, and then came back for a brat. We got a single w/garlic and onion. The garlic and onion were nicely caramelized and added an amazing flavor. Opted for the stone ground mustard, excellent! I must admit that I usually do not eat bratwurst, I go along with my boyfriend who loves the stuff. This was different, it was so delicious..the combination of the flavors including a nicely grilled brat AND roll!!! Yes, roll!!! :) Will definitely be back next trip.

Probably the best bratwurst I've ever enjoyed

Stopped here for a quick lunch and after hearing a German dude comment on how good the bratwurst with curry ketchup was, I had to try for myself. Was not disappointed. This was the best brat I've ever had. Cooked perfectly with excellent flavor, plus the curry ketchup was fantastic!

FOOD CART AT THE FOOD CARTEL IN BEAVERTON - Best Brat in the Pacific NW

By Cindy F |

The first bite sent me back to Sheboygan County, WI where Jameson (owner) and I grew up. Most butcher shops there have authentic old world recipes for their own brats. If you want to know what an authentiic brat tastes like, this is it! The German Potato Salad is excellant and adds to the authenticity. He has 1 pound frozen packs to take home and grill - well worth the extra cost.

Love the Brats

I must say that itʻs almost impossible to get a brat prepared for you in Maui, Hawaii. In fact, all of the bratwursts Iʻve had were purchased at the grocery store and made at home. Having a brat made to order from Altengartz was the first for me and I was pleasantly surprised. Altengartz is of of the many food trucks at Washington and 9th in downtown Portland. Bottom line: Friendly workers, quick service, great tasting brat

This is what a brat should taste like

So good, caramelized onions, cheese and the Brat. added some Ghost pepper mustard and I could have eaten 2 more of these. they are so good, and Jameson takes his time and care with each order. Great experience, so glad we stopped!!

Altengartz is for Vegetarians Too!

My favorite place

By Kathleen B |

I first came to the food truck pod on the Tipsy Tour and sampled the brats. It was so good, I came back the next day for lunch, The food is great, and there even tables you can sit at. Jameson is efficient and friendly, and he's obviously a local favorite. People honked and waved at him as they drove by. Not sure you'll like it? Ask for a free sample! I regret not trying the German potato salad. I'll bet it's good. I'm mail-ordering brats from him, but I'm sure it won't be the same.

Fresh Bratwurst!

My Wife and I sampled a freshly made bratwurst after walking around the various food carts in Portland. Really fresh, tasty and prepared from scratch while you wait. What a great concept, very Portland! Very pleasant people, appreciated out business. Highly recommend!

Surprizingly good restaurant

This seems to be just a small darkish restaurant but is surprisingly good. Excellent food, better service and a nice atmosphere

The food was great. My son who lives in Portland recommended this place. It was so good that I bought another bratwurst.

The Brats are good quality and are cook well. A reasonable price and quick service. It is a favorite with locals. It is easy to find on the block with all the food trucks downtown. An easy walk from the downtown area. Friendly workers. Just a fun place to go.

BEST BRATS AROUND!

By lauren_wgnr |

Altengartz is one of the best secrets of Portland, Oregon. Its located downtown on 10th and Alder. This place has locally made AMAZING bratwursts. The people who run it are genuine and very friendly. I guarantee no matter what you try on their menu..you will not be disappointed. They even created their own vegan option. If your ever in the city I HIGHLY recommend stopping by the altengartz food cart. They also have a website that you can order frozen brats from..(great for holidays or when entertaining guests!!)

DEEEEE---liscious !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jameson is a very pleasant man to talk with as he prepares your food. All homemade and very tasty. When you take one bite and just go HHHHMMMMM or wow you know you have something good. The German potato salad was amazing as was the Hot apple cider. All and all this was one of the best stops we had made and found by accident.

Bratwurst Food Truck

By Ally G |

Popped into downtown Portland on a layover from the airport. Had lunch at the food truck area. Altengartz is a family run business. All Brats are pork and very delicious Gluten feee here means no bun but they will cut up the brat for you and add toppings. Only reason for 4 stars is I think it’s too expensive -2 brats with no bums and toppings is &12.

Double Brat on a Bun Perfection

By COparrotheads |

Walking by this food truck you are struck by the distinct smell of Bratwurst on the grill. Go Big or go home so ordered the double brat a on a bun. It was sensational with onions and stone ground mustard. Find a spot to sit and enjoy.

We stopped here on our tour of the food trucks in Portland. The brats were excellent. I didn't want to add the musts prod because they tasted so good alone.

Going to miss the 10th and Alder pod location

By David T |

I've been here several times - I understand the gentleman who runs the place is one of the original food truck owners at this (soon to be shut down) location. He was referred to as the "Podfather" in an article I'd read a while back. The brats are excellent - not done ahead of time, which I appreciate, and very much worth the (not too long) wait. The buns are toasted and all I've ever needed to add was a bit of mustard. I understand this entire cart area is being shut down to make room for a Ritz Carlton, which is too bad. I hope that I can find Altengartz my next time in Portland.
