Just like the Original Anchor Bar (mostly)

By cecil547 |

Have gone to school in Buffalo for 5 years, I became accustomed to quality Wings and Weck. I even visited the original Anchor Bar several times and by the end of my college career was an expert on Buffalo Wings. This Anchor Bar location has the food down pat. The wings are done and sauced correctly and the beef on weck is great. The decor is interesting, but OK. What is a little off is the VOLUME of the music and by necessity, the conversations. If you go here thinking you're going to be able to talk to anyone more than 2 feet away, that's not going to happen. They did honor a request to lower the blaring music when I was last there for lunch, so maybe they are getting a clue that blaring nise should not be on the menu.

Not so great

Tried this place for the first time because it’s near our house. Had their cheese dip appetizer and then a burger and wings. Appetizer wasn’t good. Wings were overcooked (burnt in some parts). Burger was dry on the edges and WAAAY over-salted. I ate a few bites and couldn’t stomach any more. Plus the kitchen got my order wrong. The restaurant is loud and you have to yell at the people at your table to have a conversation. Won’t be going back.

Amazing Wings!

By Tamusa2016 |

This place was recommended by a coworker, and being a fanatic of buffalo wings we decided to try their wings! I must say that I was not disappointed, we arrived shortly after they opened and the restaurant was dead but at 12 pm it got extremely busy with almost every table full. Service was great, our server Jackson, was very attentive and very sweet with our table. In regards to the food, the wings were great! I personally, and my mother were full with only a snack size order of wings, which comes with 5 wings. I loved the fact that your are able to customize your wings, they give you a choice of rubs and sauces, and you can do both! Being a fanatic of spicy food, we decided to get five suicidal wings (suicidal is their spiciest sauce) and five honey sriracha. Jackson was nice enough to bring us samples of their sauces before ordering their wings and we were very pleased with the wings. The wings were excellent, even the suicidal ones, very spicy but very yummy! They were also toasty and scrumptious. Although, we got very messy we were very pleased! In addition, with the wings you are able to get broccoli, fries, or wedges for an upcharge of 2.00 which is not too bad. Prices were not bad at all. Overall, I was very content with my visit to this location, service was great, staff was great and I am in love with their wings. Thus far, the best wings I have had in San Antonio.

First Time

We stopped in for an early lunch during the week and parking was no issue. This location has been several different restaurants over the years but this was our first visit to Anchor Bar. When we entered we immediately noticed that it looked much better than previous times when it was different places. It has an open air outside bar with a neat rock/wire fence and tables under an oak tree along with tables under a covering. There are several TV's outside. Inside there is a very long full bar with seating and two areas with table and booth seating. Along all the walls are a multitude of TV's, maybe two dozen or so and on different channels. We were seating immediately and our waiter took our drink orders quickly. The music wasn't too loud and although the lunch crowd started filling in, mostly guys, it was still not too noisy. They have a lunch menu with pricing in the $9 range. We ordered the Buffalo Chicken Salad which was suppose to be mixed greens but if it was it was limited to iceberg and romaine with some tomatoes and a tad of red cabbage. It was a very large bowl though and you have your choice of an array of buffalo sauces for the chicken. The Honey Bourbon BBQ sauce was a tasty flavor but little overpowering of sweet. The other ordered the 7" pizza with side salad. There are several toppings for the pizza at $1 each. It was a good size but very greasy and on the soft side where you could fold a piece over. The side salad was lots of core and white and wilted iceberg with slightly overripe tomatoes. The place was very clean though and has a good selection on the menu if you are into wings and sauces. They do have a HH menu which offers like $1 off drinks and $2 off appetizers from 3-6 pm. We might go there again when in the area and try something else on the menu.

Buffalo Wing Supreme

By Jimmtronzaur |

As a giant buffalo wing fan and diehard chile-head, I've always wanted to make the pilgrimage to Buffalo NY and visit the original Anchor Bar. I did so two years ago and have been longing to go back since I left the parking lot. With the original location holding a special place in my heart, I had very high expectations and hopes for this new location. I was not disappointed. The quality of chicken and wings is orders of magnitude superior to any other chains in town. The sauces are perfectly tossed and the "suicidal" level brings the perfect combo of slow onset heat and excellent flavor. Great selection of beer at the bar and although I personally didn't eat a pizza, several pizzas were on tables around me and they looked tasty too. I'm so happy this is here and I can't wait to go back!

A little bit of Western NY

By nannyg264 |

My husband, who grew up in western NY, and I got to the Anchor Bar as quickly as we could once we heard they serve Beef on Weck there. We were not disappointed. No, the rolls are not quite up to WNY standards, could use a coarser salt and more caraway seeds. But the roll was fresh, the beef was high quality, plentiful, and delicious, and the sandwich was served with the requisite horseradish and au jus. A very satisfying experience we will be anxious to repeat.

Great!

I went into Anchor Bar for the first time and I was impressed. The food was delicious and the manager was on top of things when I asked for a change station on one of their tvs. The place is not big but does have good ambiance. I think they will have seating problems once Football Season starts. The server was very attentive and offered suggestions to my liking. I started out with the Pizza Logs. They were cooked well and I didn't realized how big they were but if you have a table of 3-4 this would be a good appetizer to share. I then followed up with a Buffalo Chicken Wrap. It was good. The sauce had a nice kick too it. I couldn't finish the whole thing because of the size of the Pizza Logs. Next time I will go for the wings.

Average wings

By Johanne H |

Was really excited to try this place. However, the wings were no better than wingstop- they were pretty small. The carrots and celery were warm and soft because they were mixed in with the wings. As noted in other reviews, it's quite loud in this restaurant/bar. They do have a good selection of beers on tap. I'll stick to my favorite spot for wings- Buffalo Wings n Rings. Their wings are significantly larger and tastier. Kudos to the manager though who checked on us when we arrived- we had waited 15 minutes and no one had shown up to get our orders started- he comped our first drink for the delay.

Lunch Stop

By Art O |

We decided to stop by for a first time experience. Their 8-wing combo was everyone’s choice. Between the 4 of us, we had their buffalo lemon pepper, honey bourbon bbq, honey garlic, & sweet & sour. First, the wings were nice & crunchy. All of the sauces were coated nicely with excellent flavor to them! They have a good variety of sides (love their tots!). They had a ton of tv’s to watch games as well. Last, they include an outdoor patio. We’ll be back!

Best wings

By NixB |

Really good selection of wings options, it is the third time we have visited and it never disappoints. We haven’t tried other options on the menu.

Will be a regular place for us

By Michael G |

We were looking for a good place to eat and ran across the Anchor Bar. The wings were some of the best I’ve had on long time. Plus the server Aleesha was super sweet and quick with the ice cold drinks. I thought she was gonna get mad at us for being loud, but she kept us happy even though it was super busy. We’re gonna make this a regular place. Go see Aleesha! Try the Wings!!

Finally !!!

By Misterbunns |

Finally a taste of WNY. The wings are made correctly, crispy and saucy, not a soggy mess. Also, we got to indulge with another WNY favorite, beef on weck. Although the rolls are a work in progress, the final product was still great nonetheless. The only thing lacking in the rolls is the crispy crust on top. We definitely will be back to indulge in other varieties of wings. My wife stated that it is nice to be able to enjoy wings again.

You can tell this restaurant's origins are from upstate NY

By Evan C |

Awesome wings, let me just get that out there up front. I am from upstate NY and this is about as close to what it's suppsed to be while being in Texas, Atmosphere was good staff was friendly and attentive, and food quality was really great. We tried four different flavors, all of which were excellent. My definite go-to place for wings in San Antonio!

Anchor Bar

By Linda S |

Amazing food. Great choices in wings. Wings are plump and cooked just perfect. Great place to watch ball games. Sports bar. Excellent service and great draft beers. Will return. They opened one in Schwartz Tx as well

Best Wings!

By Lora D |

The Anchor Bar has the best wings we've had in San Antonio. We tried the hot, mild, and honey bourbon, and loved all three. They have several beers on draft, we had Guinness and Blue Moon, it was nice and cold. We are looking forward to going again, Kurt our server, provided excellent service, ask for him when you go.

Good And Very Loud

By clsm929 |

I went here with some friends for "beer night". My friends have wings and beer and I, because of my diet, stick to iced tea and salads. My friends related that the wings were actually better than other well known places, especially the ones with a rub vs a sauce. As typical for me in recent years, I had a Cobb salad with grilled chicken. Salads are not the focus of sports bars, but this one was a cut above the average. The service was excellent and prompt. This is a sports bar and there was a preseason football game offered to those in this establishment who had jerseys and strong opinions. Went we were first there it was easy to talk, but it got so loud that it was hard to think, let alone talk. If you are comfortable with this scenario, this is a good place for you, even on game night.

Debbie is a delight, food is good

By lindakerr8 |

We took my son/family to this restaurant, very large sports bar atmosphere with large tables, outdoor seating and a plsyofir the kiddos. We were immediately greeted upon our arrival by Debbie who was combination hostess, server and bartender (she did it all)! Our seven person meal was delicious, cooked to perfection and served with a smile. Debbie was a whiz at serving all of us and the 7 other tables…wow!! Lastly we have a Service zDog…no problems or hassles, always a plus…..military discounts given!!! A must for good food and a great experience

Food chaos

By Laurie |

Total chaos. Wait staff, kitchen, bar - no one knew what they were doing. Food passable at best. Beer was good. They’re trying hard but missing the boat/

My favorite wings!

By AmericanExplorers |

These wings are so good, they keep us coming back - I haven’t really tried anything else because the wings are so good that I don’t want to deviate. ;) Habanero Ranch with Lime are my favorite! The bloody Mary’s are really good too- nice & spicy! It does get loud when there are games on but that’s part of the fun!

Great wings!

By LaJana Y |

Well I have to say that I normally don't love most bar food. I never eat wings because I HATE soggy saucy gooey wings... and that's what you get in most places. Anchor Bar is the exception... (I normally ONLY eat wings at Monkey's Uncle Tavern in Jacksonville FL... LOL! I know that sounds nuts... but it is true...Bippy style wings there are the greatest!), I love their wings! I really like the dry rub... ranch or the habanero are my favorite... order them extra crispy and there will be NO soggy grossness... they are delicious! The have a good selection of beer... for my beer snob husband... and the fried mac and cheese balls are bar food at it's best! I would also like to note that the manager on duty stops to talk and check on you... very nice. In a world sadly lacking in customer service skills that is a very nice touch! I admit it... I love the rowdy and loud football watching crowd! Go here... you will get great wings, great service and you will have a ball!

FINALLY!! REAL chicken wings in San Antonio...NO MORE Parakeet wings!

By ABE49 |

SOO glad that the ORIGINAL Buffalo chicken wing franchise came to San Antonio. Wife and I had them at the Buffalo/Niagra airport a few years back and loved them. Nice SIZED chicken wings served "crisp" not soggy like so many place serve them. Your choice of rubs and sauces. Wife and I will go NOWHERE else for chicken wings now!! Between NW Military and Lockhill Selma on the North side of 1604 is the place. You OWE it to yourself to get REAL chicken wings!! See you there!

Excellent Sports Watching Venue

By pecken |

Have only been there for Game Days. Very loud so not a good place to talk with your table mates but, an excellent place to watch the game! Lots of TV's, better than average bar food, fair prices, good service.

Had to check it out

By RussellK1653 |

Being from the Buffalo area we had to try out the new Anchor bar in San Antonio. I ordered the Beef on Weck and my son got a double order of wings (20). I was excited since gavent had beef on weck in 20 years. All that disappeared with the first bite into a cold sandwich. Told the waiter and then the manager. They brought a second sandwich which was not even riom temp. The juice was cold as well. The fries were really good and the wings were great. Big and meaty and hot was actually spicy. They comped the sandwich so altogether it wasnt a bad meal.i will try again someday.

Bad Service

By Robin D |

Very disappointed today. Went with my daughter and ordered single bites. They brought out snack wings. The wedges were correct but 15 min later they brought me the same cold wedges with snack bites. They weren’t good! Daughter had a dry buffalo chicken sandwich and didn’t eat half of it. I came with a friend last week and the chicken sandwich wasn’t good. Frustrating to tell two people my order and it was still wrong. Even more frustrating that the food is going downhill at a place I liked and frequented.

Great food with so-so service

By Reed |

I was visiting San Antonio recently and I have never been to an Anchor Bar, so we had to give it a try! Inside you will find a very cavernous sports bar type atmosphere, lots of big tables and lots of TVs. On the positive side, the food was very good - the wings were yummy, hot and well flavored and the pizza was surprisingly good as well. Service was a bit more challenging with multiple mistakes with our parties order and challenges getting drink refills. Overall it was a good experience and the food makes it worth the trip.

Saturday lunch

Hubby comes here all the time for lunch during the work week with his coworkers. We were out and about today so he wanted to bring me. I opted for the buffalo salad. It was a huge serving but pretty good.

A Real Wing Experience

By DonnyTheOracle |

If you like wing and things you'll find this spot worthy of a pit stop. A good combination of wet sauces and dry rubs. There is something for everyone to partake from the menu. Competition is stiff in the wing sector and location will make or break this spot.

Extra crispy, extra small

By Ralph P |

The newest wing joint in the San Antonio area, this place bills itself as the inventor of the buffalo wing back in Buffalo NY. That seems hard to fathom considering that their wings pale by comparison to any of the wing chains like B Dubs or Wingstop that have McDonald-ized the wing restaurant business. I'm not knocking B Dubs or Wingstop. Just that if your place was the home of the first wing, then it better be the best darn wing that I've ever had. It wasn't. Not even close. Aside from the wings themselves being VERY small...nibble sized vs bite size, the wings themselves were so over fried (extra extra crunchy wasn't ordered, neither was extra crunchy) that any semblance to chicken had long since disappeared. It was more like a deep fried wing bone with sauce. As for the sauce itself...average but definitely not worthy of "home of the original buffalo wing" sauce. Lastly, and not that I expect much in terms of carrots and celery sides...but these were old and had lost their crisp. Maybe I should have ordered extra crispy celery and carrots instead.

Original Flavor the Best!

By mikel68 |

We've been to the Anchor in Buffalo, NY and this is really close, service is slightly slower, but is was a packed Friday night. Like other wing places there are meals and al la carte offerings. Al a carte can get pricey. There were four of us and our orders were all over the place. One person ordered tenders/bites, one just original, then my son and I together eight different flavors. No waiter blunders, he got it all right, which I wasn't expecting. Good Job. My favorites were Original and the Lemon pepper rub. Teriyaki was also ordered, but the sauce was uncharacteristic of the others. It was really gummy and thick, which I cannot stand. However the Teriyaki flavor was good. Maybe don't cook the sauce down so much...or was it from a bottle???? hmmmm?? My guess all the sauces are from a bottle, not homemade. Overall about the best cooked wings in San Antonio, and for the Original "Buffalo" flavor. If you like thick, gummy, messy sauces the the others are okay as well. I've been eating "Buffalo" wings since about 1993, it took a while for them to get to Texas.

Worst ever

By stephen s |

Went to Anchor Bar to watch a football game. Could not get service for well over an hour. Finally asked manager for assistance and she gave a vague excuse for lack of service. No apology. Worst service ever!!!

Always pleased!

Best wings in SA area! Great loaded tots. We really enjoy the pretzel dessert also. The salads are HUGE and fresh.

Average rating, average experience

By LVSquared |

We can't say anything captivated us - besides a good sized chicken wing - but the rest was so not extra. Service, ok, drinks, less than, bathrooms, bad, on tap options fine, location, ok. Won't be back around, but for some, it might be an option to watch a sporting event.

Neat little sports bar worth the stop

By mericksonjr |

We had heard how good this place was, and we were not disappointed. We started with the buffalo chicken nachos. (by the way they say this small chain was the start off buffalo sauce for wings at their store in New York.) The backs were huge! I had the Mac and cheese burger. The bun was actually made from Mac and cheese. It was amazing. My wife had the buffalo wings Mac and cheese and said it was good but had a little too much Blu cheese on it. Son in law has the wings said they were fantastic and my daughter has the buffalo chicken salad and said it was great. We would definitely go back. They have indoor and outdoor seating. They make you take your temperature with a forehead scanner when you first come in. The staff was great and the overall atmosphere was nice. I would recommend this place to anyone who is looking for a great sports bar atmosphere. Burgers wings and beer how can you not like this place.

Just like the Orginal in Buffalo

By dinealot2017 |

Took our friends who were raised in Buffalo to see how this location is to the original one.. they were not disappointed.. wings were crispy moist and tasty. The fried fish was great as they use haddock. Fries were crisp and good. Beef on wick good but sliced beef was tough. Manager apologized and brought tender slices. Will definitely go back
