Great chana!

By TravelinKiki |

I ordered the Chana Masala at "3 star" spiciness, Naan, Chai, and Kheer (rice pudding). The chana had some heat, but was not so hot that it destroyed all my tastebuds in its wake. It was excellent! Easily the best dish I had here. The Naan was slightly overcooked, but still yummy. The rice pudding and chai were disappointing since they were less flavorful than others I've had. The service was outstanding - friendly and quick. Overall, I would recommend this restaurant.

Good value Indian

By KLM |

We liked this place for the most part. We arrived for dinner at 6 and it was already very busy. Good value as far as wine/beer pricing and the food was very reasonable. Only slight complaint is that the food was not very spicy even though we asked for spicy. Would go back...

Loved it!

By Darci A |

We absolutely loved this place! It had several great reviews online and then my cousin recommended it as well and we were not disappointed! Nepalese/Indian food. The service was great, it was very busy but we got seated right away and everyone was nice and attentive. Had the fried veggie apps, cucumber salad, goa chicken and the another spicy chicken dish but can't remember. Had a red sauce. Good portions for the price and definitely recommend it. No problem taking kids, it's pretty loud in there and there was a younger girl there then my 5 yr old and they seemed to like kids. Try it out!

would not return

By Ronald C |

The food was way below expectation. We ordered lamb saag ,that was so watered down that it had little flavor and had very little lamb in it. The shrimp curry we could not eat . The shrimp were undercooked and it too had watered down sauce.A bad cmeal!!

Good, But Spicy Food

By hilo88 |

Reviews for Annapurna Café were really strong. We love Indian food so definitely wanted to check this place out. My wife and I also brought along a couple living in Seattle who has never been. Overall, we enjoyed our food. Here are my thoughts listed below based on this experience: Restaurant Wait & Space: The place was quite busy. We waited maybe 30 mins to be seated. There is some indoor waiting room upstairs in a narrow hallway. The restaurant is actually downstairs down a steep staircase and the tables are pretty close together. It was a little tight but that was ok. Service: The service itself was ok. We weren’t there that long but at the end of the meal, the server seemed to be trying to get us out. We wanted to get dessert there but took her rush-ness (I don’t know a better way to put it) as “just pay and leave.” We took her cue and got dessert somewhere else. Food: The food itself tasted good, but I consider their mild to be spicy. The people on our table also got a spicy lamb vindaloo though I didn’t try it. They said it was incredibly spicy. So for those with weaker stomachs, you may want to inquire about food spiciness before you order. I really enjoyed my rose lassi & my wife her mango one. Those were great complements for the spicy foods.

Nepal, Tibet and Indian UNIQUE, DELICIOUS, travel via Broadway cafe

By DogDaze55 |

This tiny cafe is in the basement, tucked under a street side bar on Broadway. Ample quantities, fast service, well prepared! Try the spinach momo appetizer with three delicious sauces. Best black eye peas ever in an authentic Nepal dish. Lots of unusual items, so plan on more than one trip.

Legit food. Great prices!

By Max G |

Couldn't have asked for more from this place. From the solid copper mugs that you drink water out of to the lady that picks up your dishes when you're done with them who doesn't speak English. This place is as legit as it gets! Prices were great for what we got as well. Pretty big portions, gigantic naan, well seasoned, lamb was the best I've ever had and has set a new standard. The only thing I noticed was that all the people working there looked a bit disorganized and disoriented. If I hadn't had made eye contact with a waiter he wouldn't have noticed we were a new table. Workers just walking around repetitively. It was kind of amusing actually. It looked like it was everybody's first day on the job. Needless to say, service was good, food was great and the atmosphere was fantastic. Will come back.

Huzoor! - excellent Nepali/Indian food

By sunny-jim-sunshine |

On a holiday visit to Seattle earlier in Sept 2016 (my first ever visit to the city), saw this place on Broadway. My English friend salivated at the tempting smells emanating from the door - i was more cautious - being from Mumbai & being a frequent visitor to Kathmandu (Nepal) - I didn't want to face disappointment. I am pleased to report the food was excellent - really delicious & not 'western style curry house' fare. The cosy joint was gratifyingly heaving with locals & visitors - really lovely to think Seattleites enjoying & appreciating proper sub-continental cuisine. The momos, pakoras, veggie & meat options (especially traditional Nepali dishes) were very good - as was the friendly service. The only reason for a score of '4' - my greedy disappointment that 'aloo achar' - a sensational Nepali potato 'pickle' (salad) was not available though on the menu.....my request to the owner & the Nepali chef - please have this as a regular dish - it is so yummy!

So, friendly, and really tasty nepali

By John T |

Adorable space, and really friendly people. Bent over backwards to take care of us and our bags (were traveling). Solid options. Naan was authentic, and crispy tasty. Curries were a highlight. Decent selection of beers. This place is a steal. We were stuffed, and felt like we had visited with family.

Adorable and delicious

Anna Purna is one of my favorite restaurants in Seattle. Delicious Indian food, fun cocktails and is so adorable inside. Great service too.

Great owners, great staff, great food. Spicy means spicy, but made to order, and the Lhasa Curry and Palak Paneer are two of my favorites.

Lots of vegan choices!

By Amanda B |

My table shared a variety of curries with both a mixture of vegetables and tofu at level 3 heat and they were all delicious!! We also had the roti and rice to go with them. This is a great place to go if you are vegan, a third of the menu is vegan :)

GET THE LAMB TIKKA FRECKING MASALA!

By Mel L |

It was unbelievable, guys. Hot damn. The saüce was made directly in heaven and the lamb cooked to tender perfection. Second, get the mater paneer and thank me later. Samosas? Yes. Garlic naan? Frick yes. Everything was so delicious I almost cried. Lastly, don’t forget the tamarind sauce. Get some to go and just pour it all over you.

Just ok

By Niran A |

I really love all types of regional Indian cuisine and had my hopes high when I read the reviews however the food sadly didn't make the mark. The tandoori grill was too dry along with the rice, the saag aloo and Annapurna mixed vegetable curry was devoid of flavor and tasted greasy. The only thing that I was able to eat was the naan. The basement restaurant needs some revamping, it smelled moldy. The service was friendly and fast.

WOW what a experience!

By Dennis W |

Some locals directed us to this place for diner. Looks like nothing from the outside, you enter a foyer and then down a flight a steps to the "basement" We were seated right away and then presented menus that were mostly Tibetan/Indian cuisine. Lucky for us we were with family that had spent a few months in India so some suggestions about bread choices (naan or roti), appetizer choices etc. were helpful. The menu items have good descriptions so you can take your time and read about what the dish is made of. We were a group of four, we ordered 4 different entrees and shared. All items seasoned so differently and all truly outstanding. The place doesn't look like much but the food was so different an sooooo good. Flavors and tastes that I have not experienced. Service was excellent, our main server was Roshan, but we must of had 5 different people at times filling water glasses and catering to our needs. Excellent experience!!

First Seattle dinner

By Clay R |

A great restaurant! The food was amazing, felt like I was back in India and Nepal! The atmosphere was enjoyable and intimate. There was a line and from what I have heard there usually is so plan extra time for that.

Excellent Indian & Tibetian cuisine

By IndianaAllinfan |

This is a special, hidden gem we found in Capital Hill. You are greeted by friendly staff with a "Namaste" and enter into a colorful restaurant with fabulous smells wafting from the kitchen. I am not typically a big Indian food fan, but I can honestly say, this is the best Indian food I have ever had. The Naan bread was fabulous and our party of 4 ordered 4 different entrees to share...all were superb (mine was best)! We tried the Jaipur Curry, Chicken Tikka Saag, Chicken Tikka Masala and the Fish Korma. We highly recommend this restaurant and it will be a Seattle staple every time we are in the city.

Great Indian food

By Mike F |

Visited here last weekend. Our son and his girlfriend love this place. We ordered several appetizers and entrees to eat family style. Would go back their again in a heartbeat.

The Yeti Lives!

By Michael H |

Stopped in for dinner but had a cocktail upstairs at the Yeti Bar. PHENOMENAL Staff, food and drinks. We almost kept going and didn't go to the restaurant. We Did! It was amazing. Get everyone of the breads and take them home. Get at least one dish as hot as they make it. It will leave your mouth blazing. We had everything from mild to blazing. All terrific. HIGHLY recommend this as a great spot.

Food is good, not excellent. Super service!

By iceqween13 |

Ate there last night. Promptly seated and served. The lamb korma sauce was a bit thick without the richness of spices. Naan bread was large but not overly flavourful. Really excellent service, and food was good.

Excellent curries.

By Morpheus Z |

Not much atmosphere here, but excellent curries. We didn't particularly like the samosa (heavy, dry shell) but enjoyed the accompanying chutneys. The Annapurna curry and Lhasa curry were both exceptionally good - nice flavor, well spiced, and decent portion. Very reasonably priced as well. Definitely recommended.

Okay I guess.

By Daro2 |

Mixed feelings at our table. Most of us loved the samosas. Service was a real mix between a couple fantastic staff members who kept checking on us, and other terrible staff with poor memories and terrible body language and coordination, right down to a full lychee martini being spilled all over me. It was nice of them to replace the drink of that guest, but, erm, nothing for me - no discount or comped drink or dessert or anything. Still, good atmosphere and average value and portions (curries come with rice, which is nice).

Excellent

By James W |

Great place for authentic Nepalese food. It is quaint and down stairs. Wonderful staff and a great selection of foods from Nepal and India.

Cozy, atmospheric retreat from the City in Capitol Hill

By IndigoB |

You take the stairs down from street level and enter, in some ways, another cozy little world. Interior is warm and atmospheric, evoking (and containing plenty of examples of) the magnificent mountains of Asia. I view the interior and decor, and the feeling it creates, as Annapurna's greatest strength. Standard Indian and/or curry-based dishes are abundant, along with not-so-common Nepalese dishes. It's a good place to learn about and experiment with the cuisine of these far-away areas. I did lunch and would think lunch and off-peak times would appeal most to those who want to decompress and slow down.

Wonderful!

By taikogirl1 |

Great food and wonderful atmosphere. It was busy so we waited in the Yeti bar upstairs till our table was ready. Nice bar as well. Definitely recommend!!!!

Cool dining area with fantastic Saag

By The Irish Samoan |

***Atmosphere*** Lovely little basement type dining area with cramped seating that's charming in a way. The lack of AC when eating spicy food like this in August wasn't the most ideal, but I'm sure its fine most times of year. They'll likely offer you a table upstairs in the bar area if there's a wait, but the wait is worth it. ***Food*** Very tasty. The Lamb Saag was as good as I've ever had, the Samosas were delicious and a good size, and the Vindaloo was a perfect spice level. Naan was delicious. ***Service*** Nothing fancy but solid service. Food came out pretty quickly, especially for Indian food.

My first foray into Nepalese food. Will definitely return.

Delicious Nepalese food

By Marcella W |

Delicious Nepalese food with a huge menu! I have never been disappointed by this place, and no matter what you like on menu, you're likely to find it here given the high number of options available. Portions, including servings of naan are generous, and prices are fair for the centrality of the property to the city. Plus even when it's packed, the food comes out very quickly! The only downsides I can see are the fact that the restaurant is awkwardly designed for waiting (so little space for waiting in general) and it can be pretty loud since it is a very popular spot with limited space.

Good food & service but ...

By doggone31 |

Bring bug spray! Unfortunately, during the course of our dinner we noticed 4 cockroaches crawling on the walls beside us. It's too bad because the service was very good. Up until we saw the roaches, we thought the food was very good as well.

excellent food lovingly prepared

By tom g |

We really enjoyed our meal and the setting. We don't get the cuisine of Nepal often and were pleased to do so. Don't miss the mo mo. The setting is hippy/Buddhist/Hindu in a basement location. Many candles, statues and shrines. if you want formal, this is not the place for you. The staff was warm, friendly and helpful. Surprisingly, there were ample meat dishes on the menu, I had expected vegetarian. We recommended it to friends who were visiting Seattle and they also loved it. We were only visitors to Seattle, only ate there once and, sorry, cannot answer the questions below. But, it was a place that warmed our belly and our spirit.

Wonderful food in a great setting

By RosannaHMY |

Absolutely delicious flavoursome food, friendly staff and a beautifully decorated space - what's not to like? So glad I stumbled across this place. I particularly recommend the vegetarian momos which come with three different tasty sauces. Great chai too!

Delicious Meal

By Kittygal 🇺🇦 🌻 |

I stopped here for dinner after a long day walking all over Seattle. I'd noticed it the day before and wanted to return. Very glad I did. I ordered a garlic naan (huge and perfectly done) and a spicy Nepalese lamb sampler, which came with puffed rice and two traditional sides. Delicious! There are menu items from Nepal, India and Tibet on the menu, and plenty of choices available. Seemed a very popular spot, even early on a Thursday evening. Will return on my next visit.

Quick, Hot and Yummy

By jcisler |

While visiting our daughter in Seattle I asked to dine at a local, ethnic restaurant in Capital Hill. She took us to Annapurna Cafe. It's located on Broadway. You go downstairs to a festive decor where there are more than a dozen tables. It's not fancy but it doesn't need to be. My son enjoyed the beer from India and my daughter had one from Tibet. We had delicious chicken dishes - Chicken Masala, Chicken Tikki Masala and Chicken Tandoori. All served piping hot and quickly! By the time we left all the tables were filled on a Sunday evening. Would definetly return.

Unique curry options, fun atmosphere

By Jason R |

This is one of my favorite restaurants in Seattle. It's casual but the food and service are excellent. The food is similar to Indian but different enough to be a uniquely Nepalese. My favorite appetizer is the momos, meat-filled pastries served with a variety of sauces. My favorite entree is the Lhasa curry - a spicy tomato-based curry with some unusual seasoning that's amazing. The decor here is all about Nepal and the Himalayas - mountain posters and images of Nepali life adorn the walls. It's pretty cool

Good for takeout. Food is sometimes too salty (esp. the Palak Paneer)

A great find in Capital Hill

By Christine K |

Delicious food and attentive service. Loved the eclectic decor. This restaurant was excellent at delivering the right level of spice (including very spicy when asked).

Flavor

By Meg W |

The setting is unique and gives this restaurant an unusual vibe, like being in a scene from when Indiana Jones finds Marian in Nepal. The communication with the servers was somewhat limited, so we guessed on what to order and weren't disappointed. The food was very flavorful--a chicken curry and a great mango lamb dish.

Good Asian Food in Seattle

By DCMike82 |

When I entered this restaurant I was a little apprehensive since it is in the basement of a building and I was not sure what I was getting into. The host at the door was very friendly and immediately found us seating. I had Himalayan Curry with Mixed Vegetables and my wife had Lamb Madras. Both dishes were quite good and properly spiced. The decor is quite nice with an emphasis on Nepalese art. The service is good.

First time to a Nepal food cafe. Will return.

By Brad M |

Looked like a great spot for a non traditional dinner. We only had time for apps and drinks. The MoMos were great. The lychee martini was wonderful. We will try for dinner the next time in town.

Good Tasting Indian Fare

By Doc2369 |

We ate here on Labor Day weekend and were not surprised that it was completely full. Very busy and somewhat noisy but it was Sunday evening and there were couples, families with children, etc. The food was good, not great, but each of us enjoyed our meal and so no complaints.

A Hidden Capital Hill Gem

By Midlifetrippin |

Staying in Capital Hill area and wanted to find some Indian food. Stumbled upon Anna Purna, which is tucked down Broadway beyond the primary storefronts. Initial reaction was that this is a small bar atmosphere, not a restaurant. That is, until we found the restaurant is located in the basement below. We checked in and were advised that a table would be available in 15-20 minutes. We were told that they would text message us when ready and we journeyed back up stairs to the bar. The bar service was excellent and the pricing on quality drinks and beer were very low. We enjoyed two 650ml beers from Nepal (KhuKhuri) for only $7 each. As promised and right on time, we received a text message regarding our table. Back down we went and seating was immediate. After chatting a bit with the waiter on which dishes he recommended, we opted for a Nepalese Lamb Curry, Chicken Tikka Masala, and Palak Paneer. Of course, accompanied by Naan and Rice. The meal was absolutely outstanding on all fronts, including excellent and prompt service. Simply put, I would be eager to return. It should be noted that the basement can be a little warm and it is a bit dark, but neither to the point of being uncomfortable. In fact, I would suggest that the lighting could actually be romantic, except the tables are a little close. But, no complaints. Anna Purna is a winner and worthy of your effort to seek it out.

A real find!

By volman73 |

You have to get down the stairs to find the place. But it's pretty well ventilated, and larger than you would think from the outside. Very busy! Terrific service, with many waiters bussling at the same time. Seemed very authentic. Spices a little different than I am used to. Lighter on the cream, which is good. A lot of vegitables, cooked down to tomato-based sauce. Price reflects the quality. If I lived in Seattle, would be here often. Oh, and the house Merlot is great!

An overrated restaurant

By Rajendra-Prasad Yadav |

The ambience was romantic. The service was fine. However, the food was average. Although we requested for "very spicy", we got "mild spicy". The taste was average. The price was too high, double of what we would pay for such a food and ambience.

Really good food

By Bruce M |

Food was really good, service was excellent. Very convenient location. Older basement building , but nicely decorated and very clean.

Fantastic Indian food with lots to offer

By deanc |

I'm a big fan of Indian food so this place had a lot riding on it..and they didn't disappoint. Its a small place off Broadway and you have to go downstairs to get into the actual restaurant which seems to be a combo of the food and then a small bar. It seats a fair amount of people with mostly tables for 2 and 4. They seated six of us immediately upon entering. They serve their water in these copper cups which was different and kinda cool. Servers were pretty good. Just a little bit slower service then I like but not a huge deal. Food was excellent. The chicken tikka masala was amazing. Typically Indian restaurants will serve their tikka masala sauce with a tomato base whereas this place did a cashew base. It made for a very creamy delicious masala. The chicken pieces were very soft and tasty. Be sure to try their basmati rice with that dish or any dish you may try. It's very good! Outside of the Indian food they also serve Nepalese and Tibetan food if you like to try new and different foods. Overall this place is a great find and a must try.

Good little spot

By kwtraveler |

Tucked away little "hole in the wall" with good food and excellent service. Enjoyed the paneer naan bread! Convenient to the light rail - next door. We wanted Indian food and this is the place our B&B owner recommended. we were not disappointed.

Great menu options

By Denise D |

First time in Seattle visiting family. Went to Annapurna for dinner on Saturday night. Staff were very accommodating. The menu has many vegetarian options. Spinach momos were excellent. Vegetable kofta was amazing. Would definitely recommend.

Tasty Introduction to Nepalese

By Scott W |

We stopped off for dinner here on a tuesday night. Seated immediately the servers were friendly and very quick to take our orders. The decor gives an authentic nepalese feel to the interior. The food was delicious. I went for the himalayan lamb curry which was bursting with flavour. All five members of our group thoroughly enjoyed the meal. Our server was excited to ask us about cricket and soccer when he realised we were british - nice guy. This was also the first time I've tried nepalese food. it was a great introduction to the cuisine.

Great vibe, excellent smells and good curry

By Beinman |

Although not the best we've had, this place has a good energy, the food is tasty and reasonable...fish curry and Nan, very good and we weren't rushed. The plus-side is the bar upstairs, if you have to wait. Fun appetizers and reasonably priced drinks.!

Happy surprise!

By Jonis7 |

Finally got to try Annapurna after being tantalized by the aromas every time we left the Light Rail Station next door. What a treat! Extensive menu covering India, Nepal, the Himalayan region. Started with wonderful bowls of soup (cold outside) and had two kinds because everyone is served a complimentary cup of a tasty bean soup to start. Shared appetizers - samosas and chicken dumplings - and Naan, and that was plenty. There's a bar (I think) on the main floor and the cozy restaurant is downstairs. Tip: we got there first, right when they opened at noon, and the place filled up soon afterwards. Also note there is no lunch buffet, typical in Indian restaurants around here, but the menu has lunch specials.

Subterranean garden of delights

By Clark R. |

I feel like an idiot, I've been walking by the place for years & always thought the extent of the Annapurna Cafe was the bar upstairs. Downstairs is just pure loveliness, the staff to a one were so hospitable, the food was dynamite. Great place for friends or something more romantic. Definitely gets busy even during the week, but the service never seemed to flinch. Can't wait to go back...!

Flavorful

By GROFREE |

This was my second time at this restaurant. Both experiences have been great. The food is very flavorful and great for sharing. We had a lamb curry, the meat was so tender!

Warm Service - Delicious Food!

By Einat N |

wonderful cozy little place tucked in under the hipster-ie streets of Capitol Hill, some wonderful food of the Nepalese culture served with great care and hot tea. would recommend the place for comforting healthy fresh food and some intimate conversation.

My Go To Indian Food while in Seattle

By METMEP |

I make it a regular stop to visit Anna Purna Cafe when I visit Seattle to visit my daughter and her husband. Great curries and their seafood dishes were really healthy and hearty. Good selection of local and Indian Beer. Nice Martini as well!

cosy, warm deliciousness

By blevans |

we arrived late for our reservation on a crowded holiday weekend saturday night and they staff did their best to accommodate us. the food was awesome, the smells led us down the stairs and into the warm and cozy, crowded rooms. the food was perfect and the patrons ranged from local students to indian families to tourists. it was our perfect last night dinner in seattle. (don't get the chardonnay.)

disappointed

By celested1016 |

I had read that this place had a 4.1 rating out of 5 so I was hoping for some grubbing Indian food. I was rather disappointed for a few reasons. First off, the place is very loud. Second, the food was rather tasteless. We ordered Paneer Naan and it tasted like flour. My friend also asked for a dish that tasted somewhat like Korma. what was recommended to us was nowhere close to Korma. The only plus was the service. the staff was on top of everything and very friendly.

Our favorite restaurant in Seattle. Period.

By Jill T |

No kidding, not just favorite Indian food! I have to say, not even the Indian food we had in Malyasia was as good as this! Casual and homey, the food is always delicious, and the service fast and friendly.

Small place with big tastes

By Robert S |

Annapurna is a little basement restaurant on Broadway in Capitol Hill. The cook is Nepalese and does a nice job with a variety of Nepali, Tibetan and Indian dishes. The small space has a community feel. They do have vegan options.

Pretty good

By Danielle C |

Indian is my favorite cuisine. After moving from San Diego, I am on a quest to find delicious Indian food. The bar was cool, the restaurant was busy, and the service ok. I guess I had higher expectations with the busy crowd. The food good, but not excellent. May date felt it was mediocre. I asked for it extra spicy, they made his spicy and mine bland. The samosas we’re ok, they needed salt. I’ll give this place one more try, but it has not been my favorite thus far.

Great Tibetan and Himalayan food

By Angel R |

Since our first experience with Tibetan food, we always look for it wherever we travel. This time was Seattle and it didn’t disappoint! Momos were awesome and the food had the right Tibetan ingredients, it didn’t feel like Indian food with a Tibetan flavor but rather the real thing. The restaurant is downstairs from the street ( there’s a bar upstairs but not connected) and the ambiance is very traditional Himalayan, Tibetan. Go experience it, highly recommended!

Hidden Gem

By explorer-0001 |

I've always wanted to try this "hole in the wall" but it always seem out of the way so one day while walking past the place, I decided to just stop in and grab a samosa. I wanted to see if the food is good. I was greeted by a stairwell that went downstairs. I was surprised and didn't expect this, I always thought the restaurant was at street level. I get downstairs and see that the restaurant was packed with diners! Was there something I was missing? It took less than 10 minutes for my order of samosas. Because the potato dumplings were fresh off the fryer, I had to let it cool down as I walked up the stairs and out of the restaurant. A few blocks later, my friend and bit into the most delicious potato dumpling ever! The spices were just right and it was nice and spicy (spicy hot to the tongue but not burning hot!). I have to go back and try more of the menu.

Incredible!

By Art4theAges |

I had the Mater Paneer which is the best one I've had ever (I've lived in the UK and Europe), really spicy. My husband had the Himalayan curry which was delicious. The naan bread was tasty, light, and fluffy. Service excellent. I accidentally left my purse and almost ran into the waiter sprinting after me to return it on the stairs! The atmosphere reminds me of great restaurants one can find at great ski towns. In short, loved it and will be back!!!

Good Indian, Nepal, and Tibetian food

By Alec D |

The location is super close to the new light rail station on Capitol Hill. The food is good and the service is pleasant. My favorite dish was the veg samosa's.

Average Indian restaurant

By Rama Jager |

We read nice reviews of this restaurant and had lunch there recently. The waiters seem to be bored and waiting for the work shift to end rather than waiting on the clients. The food is edible and mediocre. Nothing that will compel you to visit this place for lunch.

Awesome Find!

By joshdouglas |

This was excellent. Highly recommended. We tried the Jaipur Curry and the Tandoori Mixed Grill. Both were great. Good prices too!

Terrible white peoples Indian food

By Ali H |

The food was terrible. It seemed like microwaved grocery store Indian food. In fact the Trader Joe’s saag paneer is better. It was weak and salty and flavorless. We waited 45 minutes to get our appetizers and watched 3 other groups who were sat after us get their naan and appetizers before us because they were regulars. We asked for 2/3 spice and it wasn’t spicy at all. Tasted like uncooked vegetables. I came here on a recommendation and assumed it would be good but it was barely edible and took way too long. We paid $90 too for an entree and an appetizer because of the guaranteed service charge. Servers kept coming over and telling us that our food was on the way as we watched other people eat theirs. We got momos as an appetizer and they were cold in the middle which I can only assume means they’re microwaved which is ridiculous for 45 minutes. If you like white peoples Indian food then this is perfect for you, but I do not.

Big Added Surcharge

By WonderingNut |

Amazing food never had Tibetan food, but I’m glad we tried the place out. However, fair warning don’t give them a tip. They already add a $11.70 surcharge to the meal. Shocker! All said this is a pricey place.

Roaches

By trvlbum18 |

This was the second time I had been to Annapurna. I liked it so much I went back and brought my wife this time. The food was good. Service was fine. But there were roaches crawling on the walls. It was dimly lit so we didn't notice them at first. Sorry, but I can't eat at or recommend a place like that.

Annapurna Cave

By Raraavis1 |

Had dinner here last night with my son and his girlfriend who just love this place. Walked down 2 flights of stairs into the basement which was more like a cave with dim lighting in a good way. The walls are peppered with maps of The mountain regions of India and Nepal and other interesting images. We were greeted with big smiles and seated within 2 minutes even though the 2 rooms were packed with diners. Interesting and diverse people watching with a quiet but chatter filled atmosphere. The menu is extensive and is a combination of Indian/Nepalese food with lots of Vegan choices. Our meal was delicious and were given the option of mild/medium or spicy with every dish which I personally like because everyone's palate is different. Portions appeared to be on the smaller side but we could not finish what we ordered. Felt like royalty drinking from the heavy brass goblets which were constantly being refilled. I will definitely come back and next time bring other friends to share an experience. This is an area where parking is difficult but there is an outdoor parking lot a block away so no worries. Last but not least, the only thing I would do differently is order More spicy next time.

A Pleasant Surprise

By Brad D |

Our Seattle-based son recommended this restaurant to us while on travel. He hadn't eaten here, but walked by every day on his way to work, and said it smelled "heavenly." When we drove up, I was a bit skeptical. From the street level, it looked like a dive. But being brave diners (and watching lots of Food Network) we were ready for the challenge. Surprisingly, the front is just a front. You walk down stairs to a full on restaurant in the basement. And our son was correct - the smell was heavenly! We ordered a couple orders of Garlic Naan bread (yummy, light and flavorful). My husband and I split a chicken goa curry, flavorful with coconut milk, cilantro and fresh curry leaves. Our son and his girlfriend split a lamb madras curry, which was equally excellent. Annapurna features cuisine from India, Nepal and Tibet. Wonderfully authentic, robust and just plain wonderful. Wait staff is friendly and helpful and the atmosphere is as authentic as the food.

We were in the Capitol Hill neighborhood and needed a place to eat. We were pleasantly surprised by how good the food was here. We've been to a number of Nepalese restaurants and we've haven't liked it as much as Indian food. This place has mostly Nepalese food w/ a small number of Indian options. The food was amazing! The momos were best we've had- the meat was tasty and the sauces were delicious. We had the cauliflower appetizer and that was also very good- some people may have thought it was a little underdone but we liked how the cauliflower held its texture and flavor. Again had a delicious sauce. The main course called Sherpa Curry was full of chicken and unlike a lot of Indian curries which are just soupy liquid w/ a little bit of veggies, this was less wet so the vegetables remained intact and you can really taste them. The naan was very different in texture from the usual Indian naan but in a good way. You can taste how fresh it was. If you're on the fence, go for it! I agree the space is a little cramped and loud (possibly a fire hazard since it's in the basement) but the food more than makes up for it. The service was very good.

Not clean enough.

By Angela T |

This place smells really bad -Like a weird stink. When I asked about it they told me it was exhaust from outside. It smelled like natural gas but worse. There were also rats in the parking lot, enormous, remarkable, disgusting rats. If you want to go to a stinky place with a sanitation problem you should come here.

Amazing authentic Himilayan/Tibetan/Indian food

By busymumsy |

I was lucky to join a local at her favourite place. The setting is downstairs in a basement room, decorated such that you don't feel like you are down underground, just someplace unusual. The water is served in metal drinking cups and was kept refilled. I am no expert on Indian/Tibetan foods, but my friend loves it and loves this place. If you are looking for good Indian food on Capital Hill, this is the place. I even had texts from home requesting leftovers to be brought. The samosas featured a flaky crispy crust and tasty tamarind & cilantro dipping sauces. The Naan, both plain and garlic, was delicious; the Tiki Masala was tasty & tender and we tried their special paneer mango mezza, yum! I highly recommend this restaurant for this type of food.

Nice cozy place with great service

By Abhimanyu S |

This is a great place to treat yourself to some good Indian snacks and main course. We had Samosa and papad, both were nice and to compliment we had masala tea. It was overall a good experience. They have a wide bar menu. Service is very nice and has a cozy relaxing environment. Has loads of veggies options.

The food is pretty good...

By LoveTravel67384 |

The food is pretty good, and the atmosphere is really nice.

Was very surprised how good and cheap it was

By raskinco |

This was by far best value we had our entire stay in Seattle. In a town full of great food and especially vegetarian options Anna Purna was at the top of our list. We ate there our final night in town and walked about mile to the restaurant from our hotel downtown. We ordered a variety of vege dishes to share and they were all very good. Had a $14 bottle of Riesling to accompany of our spicy meal. That's right $14. Not the best Riesling, but far from the worst. It paired very well with our food. If you are near the Capital Hill area and are looking for really good food at good value, I would highly recommend

love this place

this was my third visit to seattle , this downstairs restaurant is funky and dated but thefood is very very good , I love the curry /yellow is the best for sure .

Fantastic dishes, drinks...

Fantastic dishes, drinks and prices. I've had better momos, but the entrees were all wonderful.

Delicious - Delicate & Satisfying. Great spot for families or dates!

By jennifer s |

A surprisingly successful blend of cozy and efficient. Clientele at Annapurna run the gamut from families to first dates - and it's very harmonious! The food here has more nuance than most local establishments serving similar cuisine. The palak paneer, for instance, has a very herbacious quality to it, being lighter and fresher than one typically sees in Seattle. It often seems to have been stewing for awhile til it's down to a mush, but not here. Very tasty ($10). Tikka Masala is tasty as well - the sauce is a little on the sweet side, slightly thin with a good nut flavor underpinning it because it contains ground cashews. The chicken is moist and cut into nice, large chunks ($11.25). The oft praised Spinach Momo could be described as a Tibetan steamed pot sticker - in a good way. The green dough is rolled fairly thin and stuffed with finely chopped spinach. Seems it could use a bit more filling, but they're tasty and fun to experiment with because they come with 3 dipping sauces - sesame, peanut and tomato ($7.25 for 6). Excellent service, water was incessantly refilled and plates appeared and vanished with speed and smiles, even though it was packed with people waiting for tables AND lots of take-out going on. As others note, Annapurna is underground - so the stairs should be noted for those who would have difficulty. Mostly the cave-like ambiance is a bonus because it is small & dark. Solid, straightforward choice for a casual date with your grandma, friends or your latest squeeze.

Best Indian Food

By Niccih8501 |

I love Anna Purna. In my my long history of coming here, I have only ever had one experience where the service was subpar and that was due to it being slammed and close to closing. Every single dish I've ever had has been amazing. Never an off night there. The apps are fantastic. The chicken tikka masala is incredible. The beer choices are great, fun cocktails, charming decor and friendly staff. This place can't be beat.

Fresh and Good--Nice Veg Choices

By Shelley B |

We ordered take out and they texted us when the food was ready for pickup, which was right when they estimated it would be ready. Good vegetarian choices. Good flavors, fresh vegetables. The naan is perhaps the best we've ever had.

Just like going back to Nepal!

By Parsis1 |

I was taken here to dinner by family in Seattle. It is my 8 year old grandson's favorite Nepalese restaurant - Nepalese food now being his favorite food. I loved the atmosphere and the staff was very attentive. We had a variety of curries and nan and tandoori. It is dark and a bit noisy but everyone seemed to be having a good time and enjoying the good food.

Not that great

By saradabhagavathy |

Had been here for the first time. They have Indian, Nepali and Tibetan foods. We had ordered, Naan, a cauliflower side dish, a herbal tea, coconut and pineapple ice cream, mango chutney, etc. Items were just ok; not that good. It is a small place, looks quite congested and they have dim lighting - I am not happy about that. It has a very low ceiling; so sounded very noisy.

Best Indian food ever.

By Colin C |

This place is fantastic. A little pricey but well worth it, and you get quite a bit of food. The atmosphere is great, and the food is delicious.

Pleasant surprise

By Thetaralife |

Found this place walking around and what a gem it is! The food was fantastic! Just the right amount of spice and they were able to sub for brown rice! I had the Dal Bhat Ra Khukura Ko, was the perfect serving for one person and had great variety.

Blink of an eye you can miss Annapura, WHY because you need to walk downstairs. I was transformed into another world!

By BBM M |

An India Gent recommended this place for home style cooking. It was the first for my cousin and I to try Nepali/Himalayan Cuisine. Well, it's a hole in the wall or shall I say, its a hole in the basement. But, to my surprise there were lots of customers. We selected the Kachumber salad, Annapura Curry and Himalayan Curry and side order Naan. Trying a different ethnic cuisine, I can't judge. But it was ok. The decor made transformed me to another world. Magazine like pictures are plastered on the walls, little canister filled with different spices were displayed next to our table that on the separates the kitchen. Lighting was dim; llke I was sitting in someone's home.

Amazing Nepalese and Northern Indian Food

By Robert C |

Don't be thrown off by the outside. This place is authentic Nepalese food that makes you feel like you just got dropped off in Katmandu. Also, don't worry if you are only familiar with Indian dishes like tandoori chicken or tikka masala. The menu is extensive and varied but the staff was very knowledgeable and helpful by giving suggestions. A group of us ordered multiple dishes to share. Try the Nepalese curries with lamb and chicken and you must order the fresh nan bread. We also split 2 orders of samosas for 5 people and it was plenty to share. Also, the dishes can have their spice turned up. They will ask you for 1-3 on their heat index. Unless you want to have your taste buds cauterized, stick to no more than a 2. After a day of shopping at Pikes Place market, this is a nice place to enjoy a good and not overly pricy meal compared to the expensive restaurants near the market.

Fabulous Indian and Nepalese Food with Terrific Staff

By Gail B |

I've dined at Annapurna a number of times and have always been pleased. The food is meticulously prepared and the host and wait staff are gracious and efficient. The quality of the food is far better than anything I had in Nepal or Northern India! The menu is varied and they lean over backward to please you and make you feel welcome.

Quaint Offbeat Dining Experience

By RAEnright3 |

I enjoyed this very unusual restaurant with a cavern-like setting. Unfortunately, I did arrive close to closing and wasn't as hungry as I might normally have been I had so much fun experimenting with some of the appetizers, I never got to an entree. It may be classed as an Indian restaurant, but the majority of the dishes are Nepalese or Tibetan, which I don't come across everyday. Very nice spice level, which is always of great importance to me!

Misleading, overpriced and disappointing.

By TrenholmeGriff |

Title says it all. Certain dishes are not what they are said to be on the menu. Besides Heat there was not a lot of flavor in the curry i got. Overall did not have a good experience. They do for whatever its worth have a good drink menu.

A fun experience, something for everyone

By wjsbellevue |

Our party of six ate early before a show on Saturday. By 6:30 there was a waiting line. It's in a basement which transports you to a different place with the wall to wall Tibetan decor. The water glasses are made of copper. Service and prices where good. The menu is extensive. Unless you only eat hamburgers, you will find an exotic Tibetan, Nepal, Indian dish you will like. I wish the menu indicated which region the dishes came from.

Good Napalese Food at a good price

By elyette |

This is a cozy place with great ambiance. My friend and I ate in the smaller room which has the best decor. My mango stir fry dish was unusual and quite tasty. This is one of the few places in the Northwest where "spicy" means "spicy." I was delighted with my fried tofu apetizer as well. The service is excellent too. I recommend public transportation to get to this location since it is on Capitol Hill and parking is tight.

Excellent food, good service

By DAEsmae |

Tried this place as it was on a list of best Indian food restaurants in Seattle. Near a community college, and kind of in the basement of a corner building. The menu offerings are extensive and include Indian, Nepalese and Tibetan dishes. Had spinach momos as an appetizer - served with three chutneys. They were excellent. Tried the vegetable kofta - these were very unique and unlike any I have had elsewhere - almost a sweet taste, and an absolutely awesome sauce. The garlic naan was great, and they offer brown rice or the more traditional cumin white rice. Service was very good, prices were reasonable. Would definately go back here and try many things off the enticing menu - it was hard to pick what to order as there were so many temptations.

Flavorful Fare

By Appreciative88 |

Rather a hole in the wall. You need to negotiate small set of stairs to reach the small dining room. The flavor and freshness of the food draws a regular stream of locals. Curry esp good.

Hidden yummy treasure !

By Chandrika G |

Yummy food with an unbeatable price And impressive ambiance - this place imbibed and reflects nepal and indian culture in every bit of its ambiance. PS: Never thought restroom entrance can look this beautiful :).

Great food, but long waiting times

By Marcus F |

Really great food - for veggies and meat-lovers... Good service, but very long waiting times after we ordered... And maybe it's just me (from Germany), but you should really NOT order the "Tajmahal Lager Beer"...

Sums up a great night.

By rikard p |

When I travel this is the kind of place I want to find. Fortunately my friends in Seattle are foodies and vegans who are always hungry. They don't mind that I eat meat and their choices for restaurants are of endless variety. The ambience here is perfect.

Great little place

By NeilFox007 |

The decor isn't the best but the food is wonderful. The owners storey is also inspiring.

Perfect dinner spot

By PennDale |

The tantalizing smells of this place will entice you in! If you are looking for a fantastic Indian restaurant in Capitol Hill, this is the place. We had the Annapurna Curry and Dal Bhat and both were delicious, as was the naan bread. Everything was perfectly seasoned and cooked. They don't take reservations so be prepared to wait or eat early.

An experience.

By fxsam |

Going downstairs to the basement, you are not quite sure what to expect, but it suddenly opens out into a reasonable size restaurant with some rather amazing decorations. I hope they dont try to update it, its half the experience. The other half is obviously the food, which was excellent. This is definately different to your traditional indian food, although they do offer much of the normal indian foods too. There is also an excellent Vegan selection too.

Noisy student hangout, delightful ambience, good value, decent food

By DEFWashingtonState |

Based on excellent TA reviews, I was looking forward to visiting Anna Purna. It is a sort of hole-in-the wall, down one flight of stairs, on a super-quiet block on Broadway. The ambience, mostly due to clever lighting and hand-painted Indian art murals, is enchanting. I was not prepared, though, for all the youthful (college student) noise at about 7 pm on a Thursday night -- similar to a campus 'pizza parlor' of my era. Not necessarily a bad thing -- it was just unexpected -- actually it was interesting to observe 'college students 2013' -- so it was not uncomfortable to be nearly 3x the average age -- just a surprise. The menu was quite different from the Indian restaurants I have visited, as it also includes dishes from Tibet & Nepal. I asked the waiter to recommend a curry dish - we settled on Annapurna curry chicken, medium-spicy. It had a pleasant flavor but was bland. Beer is $3 a bottle which may be related to the number of loud collage students. Bottom line, Anna Purna is an interesting place -- possibly a better understanding of the menu and knowing best time to visit could make it a fave.

What a epicurean treat!

By Teresa T |

We are unfortunate to not have very many Indian restaurants where we live and so I love to eat Indian food when I travel. Annapurna ranks very high in my list of Indian restaurants... in fact it is one of the few places I have been able to eat lamb. The naan was amazing, the flavors complex and spicy and the servers very attentive.

Great food!

By Sujatha J |

My husband and I wandered into this place for lunch on our first day in Seattle because our hotel was close by. We were so impressed with the food, we went back again for dinner the next day. They were packed but their service was quick and the food was great. What we liked best about this place was that the food, despite being delicious, is not heavy like some restaurant-cooked Indian food can be. My husband was reminded of the food he had had in dhabas when he was traveling in Northwest India. Oh, and their Chai is excellent. We are still trying to recreate it at home with little success.

Average food - Nothing special

By amitps |

I just picked up food from this "hyped" place. We ordered the Tandoori Chicken bites, Chicken noodle soup (Kathmandu chicken soup), and spinach momo. The chicken bites were just average and not sure how they were even tandoori, the soup was oily. The momos were decent. I do not believe I will be going back to this place in future.

Wow!

By Daryn B |

I travel all over US.......best I have had in the states! Quaint small place....atmosphere is awesome and food is ridiculous! We had four different dishes and everyone was off the charts!

As good as being there

By jo H |

We nearly didn't make it inside as we thought it was closed. However the bar on street level was closed. The restaurant is inside on your right and downstairs. A lovely space with some great pieces to look at. Food is exceptional. Very well cooked dishes with lots if layers of flavour. No oil on top as with some Asian establishments. We had the spinach momo and they were delicious. Daal excellent. Chicken Annapurna also v tasty and paneer. Good value for money with attentive service.

Yummy cuisine from Nepal & Tibet, crazy cheap

By Rob T |

There are a lot of Indian restaurants in Seattle, most of them pretty bad. Comparatively few places that serve food from Nepal & Tibet. Annapurna combines the best of all three in a healthy, tasty mix. Incredibly good, and cheap to boot. Don't let the windowless, basement location dissuade you, the atmosphere is surprisingly cozy and chill, dimly lit with great murals. A gem on capital hill that many people miss.

Better Indian food in Surrey,BC

By smilinggrace |

The food was okay. But just okay. The mango lassi would be the only thing worth going for to this restaurant. It does not compare to the good quality Indian restaurants you can find in Surrey, BC.

Great versions of Indian cuisine

By MovingMountains |

Three of us shared tandoori chicken, lamb curry, and a chicken Marsala. All were tasty and just as expected. The naan was crispy and great for mopping up the sauces. Lovely basmati with everything. Generous portions. Very friendly staff and proprietors. The food was moderately spiced, which just suited our tastes - the waitstaff inquired about our desired spiciness and it came just right. Would love to come again.

Enjoyable Meal

By brmusicman |

Looking for a change in flavor one night while in Seattle for business, I headed into Capitol Hill to Anna Purna. I am glad I did! The restaurant is unassuming--in the basement! But, despite the subterranean location, the ambiance was good--it was very busy with a great buzz and a nice mix of people (college students, young professionals, neighborhood residents, etc.). Service was a bit on the curt side, but attentive. Menu had a very wide variety of dishes, including superb vegetarian options. Flavors to suit palates ranging from low tolerance for spice to extreme spice. I didn't particularly care for my appetizer--not any fault of the food, just didn't love the flavor. But my salad and a stewed chicken dish were both delicious. Definitely a great option for affordable (but still restaurant-style) Indian food in a casual, authentic atmosphere.

Good Indian/Nepali food

I’ve been going to Annapurna for many years. The food is consistently good. I like the vegetarian dishes. A couple favorites are Saag Aloo and Mater Paneer

We had chicken tikka masala, sag paneer, an annapurna shrimp curry and some appies and accompaniments ... it was lovely. Service was low key but attentive, the place was bustling. Even though its underground it was a pleasant (if a quite loud) atmosphere.

Super Indian food with some Indian beer and great wine.

By David L |

We popped out of the Capitol Hill station and this was across the road and we were hungry plus we love Indian food. A perfect match and after a 20 minute wait at the bar upstairs with a nice glass of chardonnay our table was ready. Always a good sign when a place is packed on a Tuesday night. The food was excellent and reasonably priced. They have a good selection of beers but we went with a rather tasty Zinfandel.

I realy liked the food--surprise, because I don"t like Indian food

By gregp422 |

Nice out of the way Indian/Nepal restaurant. Not fancy, in the basement (below the Yeti bar which was, alas not open on a sunday night) but great service, nice selection and very reasonable prices. I LOVED IT! I got the annapurna special because I am clueless about this type of food. Relatively spicy but very good flavor. Great change of pace from other seattle food fare (fish anyone?). Right by the light rail station so getting to and from it is relatively simple. We took a cab and had troubling getting a cab back so the light rail saved me a multiple mile walk back to my hotel.

Colorful

By Stiv_Wa |

We found this on accident and thought it was great. The yeti bar upstairs is a good place to wait for a table... beverages include Nepal and India favorites. Know that the seating is limited and downstairs.. arrive and expect a wait. Service was very friendly and the food was fast and flavorful.

underground

By Kai C |

This place has a certain charm - it reminded me of a Tibetan or Mongolian yurt with its perpetual dusk. Nice colorful Tibetan decor; no WiFi. The menu is eclectic, mixing standard Indian fare (samosas, Tandoori, masalas etc) with Nepalese and Tibetan dishes (salads, dumplings and stews). I had the "Sherpa" lamb curry, which was OK and a Nepalese spinach salad, which was fantastic. It had a complement of herbs, spices and nuts that blended together as only authentic dishes do. Good Chai. Overall, it wa one of those experiences that you can only get in Seattle - or Kathmandu. BTW, I am surprised that Tripod has never heard of Annapurna, the majestic mountain but also the Hindu goddess whose name literally means "full of food" :)

Great food, friendly service

By MapChic |

My son lives in the Capital Hill area and had his eye on this restaurant for a while. So, he recommended it during our visit a few months ago and we had a great dinner. Last weekend, while visiting Seattle, we decided to try it again and had the same great service and wonderful food. The lamb curry was wonderful and the naan and papadum were prepared just right. Oh, and we love the chai!
