Wondeful Pizza

By SHELLYandBOB |

So by nature I am a Chicago style pizza lover but Appiza Scholls does an excellent job of having a thin crispy crust under the toppings and a satisfyingly substantial crust around the edge. I had a 1/2 Amatriciana and 1/2 Bacon Bianca. The amatriciana was the best of the two but they were both very good. The leftovers traveled well and rewarmed well. Make sure to make reservations! It is well worth a visit.

15 mi utes to put our name on wait list then told 45 minutes wait. Give me a break.

By skirafthike |

Went on a Saturday evening and expected a wait. Stood in a line for 15 minutes just to put our name on the "list". Folks were also in this line to get a drink while they waited. When we got up, we were then told 45 minutes to an hour for service. Really, get someone out in the line to either get your name on the lust and how long a wait and the have a bar line for drinks. Went to Ken' s instead. Can't imagine this place is that good. Too much hype usually means less than overwhelmed. May try again but... They need to figure out their flow first.

Great pizza!

By jeffe82 |

Being from the East Coast, I'm used to great pizza. However, friends who live in the area said we had to go here. We tried a few pies and all were very good. The capicola pizza was great as well as the bacon and red onion pie. Wow that one was great. I will say that the prices seemed a little high though for pizza. But service was great as well. Overall, a very good experience and would definitely recommend.

NYC style pizza.

By jgbtravels |

This is New York style thin crust pizza. The crust was crispy as NYC pizza should be. The service was very good and we only waited 10 minutes for a seat at the counter. A table would have been 30 minutes or more. We chose a "build your own" pizza with mushrooms and red onions. They only have 18 inch pizzas so come prepared to eat or take leftovers home. The down side is there are not as many options to choose from compared to other pizza places. We washed this down with a porter and a hard cider. $39 plus tip was the cost. By the way, there is only street parking available. We were fortunate to find a spot across the street.

Good Pizza, High Price

By JLDCA |

Its good, we had two large pizzas for $26 & $30 and four of ate there for $111 plus tip. We did have two beers each and then topped it off with a pitcher (probably should not have driven home). I am probably going to be back here but it was not the treat I expected at this price. Service was good but there will be a wait at dinner most week and weekend nights.

The Best Pizza in the Northwest USA!!!

By Lance H |

There are two things that I obsess over in my travels throughout the country...Art Museums and Pizza!!!!!!!! I have visited almost every major art museum in the USA and eaten at almost all the best pizza places in the USA from DiFara's, Frank Pepe's L & B, Lou Malnati's, Giardano's, Sally's Apizza, Totonno's, New Park, Joe and Pats, Modern, Patsy's, Lombardi's, Gino's East, Pi Pizza, Pizzeria Credo, Grimaldi's...well...you get the idea and Apizza Schools ranks up there among the best in the USA. The service was Great and the pizza is EXCELLENT. A must visit when in Portland, Oregon!!!!

What a disappointment!

By 1040ez |

I know this place is supposed to be great but my experience was totally contrary to other reviews. First, our waiter was totally rude! Second, I asked for an iced tea refill and the waitress that was delivering food to the table gave me a dirty look! Then when she brought it to the table she slammed it down. The pizza was over cooked. The only good thing about this place was the Caesar salad. I suggest if you want pizza to look for a better place.

Great NY Pizza

By Jeffrrey F |

Great experience, with great pizza, salads, service and value. It is nice to get your anticipations meet. One nice thing was we couldn't decide what two pizzas to get for our group. We narrowed it down to 4 choices . The waiter suggested we get a half of each. So we had 4 flavored on two pies. Nice!

We travel over an Hour for Pizza Scholls

By GoodFood |

Great old school pizza. Husband is from Brooklyn, NY, so he is a bit of a snob when it comes to Italian food and Pizza. Pizza Scholls passes with flying colors and that is why we drive over an hour for their pizza.

Mouth is watering just thinking of it!

By Marilou25 |

Amazing pizza. The crust is perfect , never soggy, a little crispy and chewy at the same time, with great charred bubbles!!! The sauce is very flavorful and other toppings are high quality. The pizzas are large and it is easy to over order so ask for half and half if you can't decide.

It ain't

By Old Pro |

A man sitting across from table from me was talking trash about the pizza joint I was sitting in that the time. He raved and raved about how good Apizza Scholl's was so, of course, I had to try it. I did my research and found that there's often a long line and heard two different versions whether you can make reservations or not. As it turns out, you can. I didn't need any on a rainy Tuesday night. I was told this was a neapolitan-style pizza, which the establishment makes quite clear that it is not. Some people refer to it as Neo-Neapolitan, according to the menu Which it ain't either. As I said many times before, usually the toppings on pizzas are all the same. Its the crust that makes a difference. With few exceptions. I must say that it was refreshing to find out that the housemaid sausage was not overly salty like most places. And although the meatballs looked a little antiseptic in their perfectly round slices but, the overly peppered meatballs how delightful texture. That's about the best things I can say about this pizza. The sauce didn't jump out and grab me in any way except for the fact that it was really heavy on the garlic. Good or bad, you decide. The crust had me baffled at first. It's definitely not a neapolitan-style crust and it wasn't until I got up and went to the restroom and saw a metric tons of bread flour stacked up in the hallway that I realized what this crust reminded me of. With its well fermented, almost sour taste, I realized it was basically french bread! Or a rustic Italian, take your pick. The menus readily admit that they over cook their pizzas a bit and I found this to be the case. I imagine this is necessary in order to keep their dough stiff and crispy. An adjustment to the recipes would probably be a better way to do this but, to each is own. Unfortunately Pizza overall reminded me when my daughter was little and I took her to daughter Chuck-E-Cheeses for her birthday. It's really no different than that except this pizza is cooked in a wood oven and left in there a little too long. Don't get me wrong, it's a pretty good pizza. It's just that there are several other places in the area that are better, Neapolitan or not. Be prepared to bring your own beer cuz they serve there is way too warm. Give it a try and see if it's the kind of pizza you like. And if it is, keep going back. I know that I will probably not return because there's so many other choices between here and there

Excellent Pizza

got Tartuffo 2 via delivery. Quality ingredients, perfect crust, great mix of flavors. A slice of heaven, soooo good!

Best pizza in Portland

By Rick+Jan |

Come to Portland to visit our son. This is our "every trip visit" restaurant. You have to go early as it opens at 5:00 and there is always a line outside by 4:30. They close when they run out of doughšŸ˜€. They don't let you change to much on what's on the menus, buts that's o k as the pizzas are so good you are just happy to get in. Wine list is not the greatest but again it's still o k because THE PIZZAS ARE SOOO GOOD! If you are a pizza person and in Portland you MUST go!!

Did not live up to the reviews

By MargaretArizona |

I was disappointed. It did not live up to the reviews I read. I expected a different ambience. The pizza was good, not out of this world, and expensive.

Still really good but not like I remembered.

By James A |

The pizza was really good and the place was pretty busy but I remember there being a line last time. I don’t think the pizza is quite as good as I remember but can’t complain. Staff are great and the service is really fast, price is good. Maybe just the nostalgia wore off. I would definitely go again.

And, I thought pizza could not get any better

By margaretcov |

A friend took me to this fabulous wood fired pizza restaurant. Because the pizzas are only in two sizes, 11 and 18", we shared the bigger one since we thought we were that hungry,. Luckily we had leftovers to take home (still yummy the next day). Our choice was a house special of meatballs and onion and it lived up to the word, special. Although it was early evening we did have a 30 minute wait and ended up at the counter. We did not know that they now take reservations so you can plan ahead. Wine selections are limited but we did not care since the pizza was the star. I want to take back the grandkids.

Don't have to return to New York for good pie

By bigleemo |

Very good pizza dough, balanced ingredients, super hot oven makes for good pizza and they don't just make them in New York where I grew up...in Portland, now I can save the airfare. Along with traditional Margherita, Marinara(without cheese) and other uniquely flavored pizzas, fresh and well-flavored salads, fine selection of brews, what else could one want?

Best pizza and fun place!

By Mil B |

Light and fresh.... thin and healthy. We had half margarita with arugula and the other half margarita amore. Served piping hot on tall plates. Perfect blend of sauce, cheese and topping and NOT loaded with garlic like so many pizzas. Absolutley delicious! Staff was outstanding especially Liam!

Great pie!

By PghTravelGirl87 |

I heard there were long lines at this joint and I just happened to be there at the right time... I was able to hop in at the bar and didn't have to wait at all! A line was starting to form, however, after I got there (Sunday night). I tried a pie with some of the house-cured bacon and mmm boy was it so yummy! They have a really hot oven so that the crust only takes a few minutes to cook! Very tasty, glad I was able to try!

It's Worth Getting Chubby On This Pizza!

By Bryan H |

Arrived a little before six p.m. on a Wednesday night. We were seated after a minute or two in a nice nook in the main dining room. Our server was a relaxed, non-pretentious guy who was easy to deal with. Pizza options were limited -- especially since we don't eat meat or seafood. We ordered half Diablo Blanco, half Margherita. It's not cheap for 22 o 24$ a pie. But, the pizza is big, and more than enough food for two people. We were glad we didn't order any salad to go with it! In addition drank some tasty marionberry cider while we waited for the pizza to arrive. (Not a short wait!) By seven o'clock, every table in the place was filled -- as we finished up our food. Even though we were stuffed, it felt good to stroll home from this neighborhood institution . Crust was rustic and a bit burnt in places, but it tasted good overall.

The Best

By joliverkatz |

If you are from the New York area and yearn for pizza in Portland, the only place to go is Apizza Scholls. The Caesar salad is perfect and the pizza is well, NY pizza. Forget Ken's, Oven & Shaker, Taste Buds and the rest. It's Schollerrific!! Note, they take and honor reservations.

Good pizza… but "the best?"

By CariocaBonito |

I had the basic cheese pie. Crust, tomatoes, cheese. Good, yes, but the cheese sauce, because of the thinness of the crust, didn't hold its own. Salads: okay.

Good pizza

By julshopper |

We ordered delivery through caviar delivery service. The pizza was great and our delivery guy was quick as well as friendly and polite. If I ever go back to Portland, I would definitely order from them again.

Overrated!!!

By Matthew D |

This place got excellent reviews online and when we saw the spelling ā€œapizzaā€ we thought perhaps this might be a place with good New Haven style pizza. We were wrong. The pizza was mediocre. It looked like it had been cooked in an oven at high temp, but other than that I have almost nothing good to say about it. Taste was off; cheese was scanty. Too much dried oregano. We had a half and half pizza, and the half with white sauce was even worse than the half with red sauce. Honestly, I would rather have a Domino’s pizza.

Old School Pizza

By jautrey21 |

This is the kind of pizza I grew up on in the same kind of establishment as those pizzerias. Neither were fancy, but I kept coming back. I was visiting, but if I lived there I'd come back. Several of their pizzas boast non-tomato sauce and it was quite good for a change of pace. Servers were friendly and helped with selections. Again, it's not fancy, but if there were an example of "comfort" pizza, this would be it.

Some of the best pizza I've ever had.

By Nicole F |

Went here on a whim... was a little bit outside of where we were staying in Portland. Super packed, very busy, long wait, limited staff.... BUT IT WAS WORTH IT!!!! The Pizza was amazing. Two words... FRESH BASIL

SATISFIED NEW YORKER

By RobertDean W |

The pizza here will satisfy any north easterner who wants to visit or live in Portland. Sodas with cane sugar and a lovely wait staff will sweeten your trip to this pizzeria.

Exactly how pizza should be

By David B |

The only negative about this place is that it sets the bar incredibly high for everybody else. Amazing crust -- crispy and chewy at the same time -- and the freshest ingredients. It's easy to pile a bunch of stuff on and call it pizza, but it's a real art to use few and very high-quality ingredients and have it turn out so well. We had the pizza margherita and fresh heirloom tomoato caprese. Well worth the wait to be seated. We can't wait to go back.

Awesome pizza!

By Jon K |

From the pizza capital of the US and this is some good stuff! Would definitely go here again if in area. We had the Sausage and Pepper pizza and was delicious!

New Favorite Pizza

By mtnpkepic |

outstanding pizza. The crust is perfect and every topping is better than the last one. Even the left overs we take home are more amazing the next day, yes Pizza is always amazing the next day, but this pizza is great.

Best pizza ever

By BNI W |

Had the Apizza Amore. Yum! Flavorful. Crunchy chewy crust. Capocola, garlic, basil, variety of cheeses. Life is good! Travelled from San Antonio, TX to sample the best. 5 Stars!

Good pizza, friendly service

By 7Brian A |

Evenings busy. My wine friends way they have good ones. I like to come on a winter weekend afternoon about 1:30 (open 1130 am 230 pm sat sun) and work my way through an 11 inch sausage and mama. I dont feel like 10 people want my chair, and i can use my phone.

One of the Best Pizza's You Will Eat

By yellowpixels |

This is one of the best pizzas you will eat. Pizza Scholls is not a tiny place but it is not a big place either so make a reservation, come early or expect a wait. The salads are quite good too. It gets full marks for the pizza.

Excellent artisan pizza

By Mark H |

They take their artisan pizza seriously, with several 'rules' regarding ordering their Neapolitan pies. And street parking was difficult to come by on a Saturday evening, involving several trips around the block in an unfamiliar neighborhood. We had about half hour wait for a table, but enjoyed some nice microbrews while waiting. In the end the pizza made up for any perceived difficulties. Light airy crust and nice balance of flavors on the toppings. Don't expect all your usual pizza joint toppings here, but you won't regret venturing away from the norm here. Just a really excellent pizza, hard to say anything more. Definitely worth a visit if you are in Portland.

Decent pizza, I wouldn't queue for it.

By Hamish M |

Not really sure what the fuss is about this place. Pizza is decent but mostly about the crust, which apparently is supposed to be charred. Toppings are minimal although interesting. Didn't find any combinations on the menu that really appealed. For you are in the neighborhood and it is not too crowded then give it a try. But I wouldn't drive across town or stand in line for it.

Very good; not great

By harthamm |

We were visiting this area and heard of this pizza restaurant. We had a margarita Pizza with half mushroom and half sausage. The crust was excellent: crispy but not overdone. The sauce was very tasty as was the cheese and all ingredients. There was, however, a little too much sauce and skimpiness on the cheese.

Great Pizza and Caesar Salads

By Daniel D |

My wife and I have been wanting to go here based on reviews and word of mouth for a while. First off we had the Caesar salad for 2 people. This was an absolutely delicious Caesar Salad, but I would recommend just splitting the Caesar for one person as the two person one was huge! We then got half of a Bacon Bianca Pizza and half Salami and green olive. We love that they will do half and half of any kind of pizza not just the Build your own. I'm glad our server let us know this as it isn't clear on the menu. The pizza was really great. The dough is great and they have quality ingredients. We went on a Tuesday night and walked right in and got a table at dinner time, which was nice. I think if we went back we would do this again. The service was also really great. My only complaint would be is that I am just not sure it was worth the price. For one Pizza, Caesar Salad and two beers it was $55 with tip. While the food was great, you can get great Pizza for much cheaper elsewhere. It would be tough to justify going here very often. Overall we enjoyed our meal and would definitely go back.

Best Pizza in Portland!

By Shelly |

I loved everything about this place. It was packed with locals. The hostess was friendly and nice. The pizza was amazing. We ordered 1/2 margarita and 1/2 sausage and pepperoni.

Best pizza place in Portland

By carlib36 |

Great thin crust pizza. Limited toppings but well worth the traffic, line and wait. Try the Margarita pizza and make sure to take one home for the next day

Talk about delicious!

By Beth Kellum |

It was SO good! The pizza was amazing! We ordered the amour. It was a happy dance kind of pizza. We drank a bottle of wine and two glasses of beer. My beer was fab! The weight was over 45 minutes. It's a small place, but it's worth the weight! Go!

Great, but the best?

By eJo |

I read that this place has they great pizzas in Portland. While good, I'm not sure how one determines the best.

Portland's best pizza

By John Sowell |

Apizza Scholls serves outstanding pizza, the best in town. They understand that a minimal of ingredients beats a sogged-out pie because other joints load the ingredients on. Order a custom pizza and you're limited to three ingredients beyond sauce and cheese. That ensures the pizza bakes evenly in their super-heated oven. My favorite is the Amore, a classic Margherita with added capicollo, a spicy Italian ham.

Apizza is afriendly aplace.

By PlainsHiker |

My son traveled down from Seattle for my birthday dinner. He suggested Apizza Scholls since I have not eaten there in my 10 years in Portland. The food was fantastic. The facility is not huge and the tables are cozy, but the employees hearts and the food they prepare are enormous. There is a down side: I took my wife there the following Friday but at 8:30 pm the dough was all sold. You know it is fresh if there is none left before 9 pm. So go early and go often, it will be worth the trip.

Great Pizza - No Lines!

By John E |

Apizza Scholls has always been a great food destination but opening at 5;00pm always made it a struggle to get a table without a wait. Just found out they are open Saturdays & Sundays for lunch. My wife & I went in on a Sunday & were seated immediately. Each had our own personal sized pizza - mine was the house made Italian sausage with Mama Lils peppers - outstanding & my wife Cheryl had the pepperoni - as always perfect! We shared a Caesar Salad as well & it was made with romaine heart whole leaves, dressed perfectly & garnished with shaved parm & optional anchovies. Tremendous. Add a craft beer & it was the perfect pizza lunch. Without a doubt we'll be back - for lunch!

Big pizza, big tastes

By Wilma L |

Well if you are visiting Portland, do take time to visit the best pizza shop in town. Massive Italian tastes and great customer service, make sure you arrive early to get a seat, this is a very popular local spot

I'm not sure what I missed

By Steve Taylor |

I'm not sure what happened. I've had good pizza in NY, Chicago, and Italy. What I received was nothing like any of those offerings. The size and cut like a NY pizza with a crust that attempted at something like Italy. But so horribly chewy and flavorless that I'm still experiencing tooth pain. And it arrived cold. I don't mind cold pizza, and I realized I took the risk by having it delivered, but wow...cold and almost impossible to chew. And to make it all worse, it had no flavor. So, I won't be getting a pizza from here again.

A pizza place with rules..?

By James A |

This place has amazing pizza for sure, but I've never been to a place that has rules before. You can only order three toppings and I believe one meat per pie. The pizza I had was amazing so definitely worth it. Service was very good as well. Get there early if you want to dine in because it's very popular. Enjoy!

Great experience!

By Mary Makowsky |

We come to Portland every year and try to visit places we've never been. This was recommended by a suburban resident who said it was a good place it we are looking for a "Portlandia" experience. Atmosphere: Very casual. We sat on the bar side. Large wooden booths with tall backs for good privacy. No cushions so not incredibly comfortable but not uncomfortable either. Good crowd. Average noise level for a casual bar/restaurant. Service: Excellent. Our waiter was very friendly, attentive and knowledgeable. Food. DEElicious! Very flavorful caesar salad - though it could have used a few more croutons. The pizza is fantastic. Crust is thinner and great for folding New York style. Everyone in our family loved it and we tend to have different pizza tastes. Beer list: They didn't have a ton of micro drafts but the ones they had were good. Decent bottled selection as well. It's also in a fun, funky part of town. Highly recommend!

Amazing pizza!

By Deborah M |

Definitely worth a trip - will likely go back again and again. Being from NYC, I wasn't expecting one of my favorite meals to be pizza, especially in a city like Portland which is a foodie paradise.

Worth It

By Nikaela B |

Staff is very friendly at this no-nonsense pizza joint. Menu is straight and to the point. No more than 3 toppings. Specials or build-your-own. Crust has great flavor and texture. Not like floppy NY pizza, more crisp and holds up well. Not greasy and they use quality toppings. Didn't have the Caesar Salad, but EVERYONE else did and it looked fantastic. They also have good beer and wine selections and cookbooks to read while you wait. Only open for lunch on weekends. They take reservations now per their website.

Good Pizza in SE

By JustinWoj |

Ordered a half margarita/half mushroom pizza. Pretty tasty and a nice portion size for the price. Also the Cesar salad was very appetizing.

Best pizza I have had, Must try if you want pizza

By frieser |

Pizza is all over Portland, but we tried this on a visit and we will not try another pizza place. We will keep returning here for pizza. Had a bacon Bianca and a sausage mama, had three people and each took home two slices. Great place!!

Visit Portland and meet Brian Spangler @ Apizza Scholls.

By Thomas C |

My family and I travel across the country and try pizza at every stop. This place does not disappoint! Hands down, the best pizza in Portland Oregon. Brian Spangler gave us a tour of his place, showed us the pizza oven and even gave us 2 souvenir hats, a true class pizza act. His pie, toped with Grande cheese and a DiNapoli/Stanislaus sauce, was absolutely delicious. Airy, crispy and light, we loved the semolina touch as we savored every last bite. Can't wait to come back!

Delicious, chewy pizza

By rspswrl |

No wait on a recent Friday evening. We shared a fantastic Caesar salad, a bowl of olives, and a build your own pizza. The pizza was fantastic, my favorite kind of crust. My only complaint is that the music was very loud, which made conversation difficult. We visit Portland at least once a year, mainly to overeat and rarely return to restaurant because there are so many choices. If I lived in Portland though, I would probably return.

Their pizza is the best!

By Greg W |

We come here every time we come to Portland. It’s a must stop. And every time the pizza is even better than I remembered. This time we had reservations. I’d highly recommend it since it lets you avoid a 1 to 2 hour wait for a table.

Incredible pizza

By EspressoZen |

Usually I don't expect a lot from a pizza restaurant, but the Amore Pizza from Scholls is simply a must. The service was superb kind, and loved the place. Great local beer too.

" I'VE BEEN EATING PIZZA FOR 60 YEARS - THIS MAY BE THE BEST"

By SOUP313 |

Mouth watering pizza, period! I've eaten pizza all over the globe, this may be some of the best I've ever put in my mouth! Love, love, love the crust, sauce, cheese and toppings. Only wish they were open longer hours, 5-9pm. This will be the First place we stop on our next trip to Portland! 5 JUMBO STARS!!

Dinner Reunion

By ericjon B |

We read the website talking about reservations and the amount of dough they needed for the evening. Once we arrived I couldn’t orderā€sitā€ a beer at the bar, only in the designated waiting area. Kind of caught me off guard at first since my first impression with every other restaurant in the USA allows you to go to the bar and wait till your party/table is ready. However, hostess did her best to provide workaround for their designated eating areas. Once we sat down we ate great pizza and had good wine/beer. Great selection of beer and wine. Waiter had a great balance of timing through the night and even though we stayed well past our welcome no one came to let us know they were closing. Overall, if you can make reservation here know how many pies your eating and order your beer with hostess.

Best crust ever

By williamh1002016 |

Seven of us split three pizzas, a combination of white and tomato sauce based pies...but ended up taking the equivalent of one home (which was partially by design). All were mouthwatering delicious. Crust is amazing!! They were able to accommodate our large party with a very reasonable 5 min wait at 6:15 on a Thursday night, but the restaurant very crowded with longer waits by the time we left. Great beer selection too.

Best Pizza outside of Italy

By Greg W |

I make this a must stop on my annual visit to Portland and they have never disappointed. Be there at 5:00 when it opens to avoid a long wait, but even with a wait it's worth it. If you've never been here you must go. They have classic video games to keep the kids and yourselves occupied while you wait. Pizzas come in one size (18") and you can order different pizzas on each half. No more than 3 ingredients per pizza.

Not one of the best pies in Portland

By _tomnguyen001 |

We ordered a pepperoni, sausage, mushroom and Margherita pie. Just average pizza at best. Key for a great pizza are crust and sauce... Crust is just average - good char but tasteless...(expect a bit of sweetness - none). Sauce is decently tangy but nothing special. Way too much meat toppings and that caused a real imbalanced taste. Can't say this is one of the best in Portland! High price point and they automatically add tip - beware

Pizza Perfection in Portland

By Michelle R |

We ordered a pizza and a salad from Apizza Scholls after seeing them on a list of top Portland pizzerias. They are takeout only so we picked it up and brought it back to our hotel on our last night in Portland which was perfect. It was definitely one of the tastiest pizzas we have had. I loved that you can split the pizza as 2 different varieties, it let us get 1 pizza but still have variety. Would highly recommend and would definitely return if we find ourselves back in Portland.

Quality pizza and beer

By joem32082 |

Go early or prepare for a wait of about 25-30 minutes. They did allow drinks to be ordered and enjoyed while one waits. Beers were around $5-6 and has a decent selection of drafts. Generous pour for taste was nice. Street parking fills up fast. We arrived Friday night just before 6 and parked a minute down the street. We were immediately seated at the main small bar area. After 6 there were at least 3 parties waiting at all times. Very casual Atmosphere Seems many local people and families eat here. Very pleased with helpful and friendly staff. Pizzas are 18" price range $20-$26. One can build your own but FYI There's a two or three meat limit. We ordered a 1/2 pepperoni and 1/2 of their home made sausage. Pepperoni side was generous but sausages were slightly sparser than I preferred. Sausage was mild and placed in small quarter size balls. All are thin Crust and was nicely done with just right chew and exterior crunch. Cheese and sauce was about right amount. Ranking about 8 or 7 out of 10. A single pizza would serve 3 normal people easily

First proper Cesar Salad I've had in the states...

By juanfa1988 |

Of course one needs to start with the pizza: we had half "Diablo Blanco" and half "Tartufo2", they were both incredibly good. One of my friends asked for honey and balsamic vinegar.... wait for it.... He poured a bit of honey in his plate, added a few drops of balsamic vinegar, mixed it, and dipped pizza crust on it. I was VERY skeptical, and it's just incredible (their honey is surprisingly good). Credit goes to "Chris" in case you want to try this experiment. Now to my main surprise, the Cesar Salad: it's VERY rare to see a proper Cesar Salad, usually it has grilled chicken, fried chicken, whatever... which don't get me wrong, goes beautifully well with a Cesar, but it's just not it. It seems these places add chicken to conceal the fact that their salad is just not good enough. Well, Apizza Scholls has an amazingly well seasoned Cesar, with no chicken (you can ask for anchovies if you like the original Cesar dressing recipe), homemade mayo, romaine lettuce, parmigiano... just perfect. Trust me and order it before your pizza.

Happy LA Pizza lover

By curiousfishy |

BEST PIZZA EVER! Reputable pizza lovers, such as Anthony Bourdain and Rachael Ray, have praised the pizzas at Apizza Scholls. After dinning with them, I can understand why they have an amazing reputation – the pizza was one of the best I have ever had. The greatness of the pizza here is not due to anything innovative or complex, but rather it is due to the simple quality of the ingredients. First the dough is handmade in the kitchen and baked to a crispy-outside and a tender-inside perfection. Second, you are only allowed to add three toppings to the pizza (no more). This is because they believe that a true pizza should be judged based on the bread, cheese, and sauce. I choose to have pepperoni, sausage, and onion – it was spectacular. Additionally, it was recommended to me to try the ceaser salad as well and boy was I glad I did. The romaine lettuce was chilled and crunchy and the dressing was creamy and flavorful. It complemented the zesty pizza very well. As for the dĆ©cor of the store, it is rather plain. In fact it seems like it was two stores with a door in the middle. You must enter the door on the right to put your name down for a table, and then when your table is ready, you have to exit that door and then enter the store from the door on the left where you shall be seated. It’s a bit goofy but I get the sense that the owner doesn’t care about the dĆ©cor but rather focuses all his attention on the pizza, which I actually appreciate because the moment I took a bite of that pizza I felt like I was in heaven. Overall this was the best pizza in the city.

Our Family Loved It

The employees were friendly. The pizza was delicious. The service was pretty reasonable. The decor / ambiance was charming. Really great experience. Recommend making a reservation. Good spot with kids. We loved the build your own pizza option best. Would absolutely return.

OK Pizza, but there's no reason to wait on lines for it

By Alexander P |

Portland has a few places which mysteriously attract lines way out of proportion to the quality. Apizza Scholls falls in this category. Its OK pizza-- mine was too salty, but if I lived in the neighborhood I'd get take out. Its not remotely as good as Portland's best-- Lovely's 50-50, or other quality contenders, like Heart Pizza. So there's nothing wrong, service was quick and friendly, pizza was OK . . . but I wouldn't hurry back or wait on line.

Can I please give Apizza 6 stars?

By Ronald H |

We live in coastal North Carolina - we are pizza deprived. This was the best US pizza I have had since I visited New York City. The crust was firm, crisp yet had the right chew. The toppings were all just excellent starting with the sauce and cheese. We had left overs and they reheated in the skillet just fine.

Rudest management ever!

By lrwalker6986 |

Four of us stopped in on Jan 15th for pizza. Apizza Scholls was a little busy that evening and they did not have a table at the time. There were a few tables outside the normal eating area where the customers wait for their take out orders or waiting for a table. So there was a 45 min wait for a table. We were told by the hostess we could go ahead and order our pizzas and and appetizer. We were told we could eat in the waiting area that it was considered open seating. So the appetizer was delivered and they also brought out plates and silverware for us. I also ordered a picture of beer with no complaints from anyone. Soon after we ate our appetizers our pizza arrived. Keep in mind we were still setting in the open seating/waiting area. We started eating the pizza and got about half way through and an employee named MARK came up to the bar across from us and started yelling at us like a total crazy person! He explained that the area we were in was not for eating but waiting on a table or take out and we were offered a table and we refused it. (Which is a total lie) He was screaming at us so loud that everyone in this place stopped eating and turned to look at us. We were so humiliated! He then come from around the bar to confront us face to face. We were just dumb founded at his behavior. He said it was against company policy for anyone to eat in that area but never explained why they brought us silverware and plates with our order. He also went on to say it's not fair to the other customers. I looked around and there was only two others in this waiting area. I don't understand then why there were tables also in this waiting area. We then told MARK he had no reason to speak to us like that and if there was a problem he could have just come and told us nicely and respectfully. I have NEVER been spoken to so rudely or with such disregard for respect of your customers. So we gathered our things and promptly left in ate our pizza on the trunk of our car. I will never step foot in Apizza Sholls again in my life nor will I recommend it to anyone.

Worth the Wait

By Jeff F |

My new favorite pizza place in Portland. Please make reservations unless you have one or two hours to wait. We made reservations for two and it was two weeks before we could get in due to it being a Saturday night.Customers that were in checking in when we showed up had to wait almost two hours but they do have a separate place that serves as a bar to wait. This is the only place I have ever seen this and it is very cool. The place is small and not a ton of seating but the food and atmosphere are worthy the wait to get in. We were here on a date night on a Saturday evening at 5:30 and lots of folks waiting to get in. I also saw people getting pizzas to go.The menu is fresh and local as most good Portland restaurants are becoming. The service was exceptional, the staff friendly and the music was some mix of 70's and 80's rock with some other stuff mixed in. I thought it was perfect for the crowd and set a great mood for pizza and beer. They had about eight local beers on tap and several more in bottles. I did not look at the wine list since we are beer lovers so sorry. The pizza was fantastic, what more can I say, thin crunchy crust cooked in a really hot oven with fresh ingredients. I will be back.

Very good pizza

By Arctic_O_Ring |

Really good New York Style Pizza, Crust is great and seems to be a brick oven style but was told No, ovens made to cook at 900degF. Good beers and wines available. Service was just right, always there if you wanted something.

Lives up to the hype!

By Jennifer G |

There's a reason they call it Portland's best pizza. Definitely make a reservation, can easily be done online, and come on an empty stomach. We tried three different varieties and all were excellent.

Might be the best pizza in town?

By srohrb |

Located in limited parking East Hawthorne area, we arrived at 7pm (they close at 9:30). Things looked pretty busy there, but we were still surprised to see the sign on the door telling us they wouldn't be taking anymore customers followed by the smug comment that all of their "dough has been accounted for". Seems even take out was sold out. Too many other good options out there to take another chance on this place.

Yum!

By Lindsay R |

Dropped in here on a work trip. The pizza is absolutely delicious! Great service at the bar - lots of fun to talk to and meet regulars. Really busy so go early!

Best. Pizza. Ever.

By Cindy N |

I love pizza. I eat it a lot. Without a doubt this is my favorite. Don't expect to load up on toppings. The limit is three with only two being meat. The crust is the star--chewy with a crisp bottom and absolutely delicious. Bacon bianca is the best!

Pizza in Portland

After having seafood for several days we were looking for pizza at our vacation stop In Portland. We found the right place. The Amore pizza was awesome. Great crust, sauce and fresh toppings. It was busy but we were seated promptly. In a neat restaurant area of Portland.

You'd have to go to Italy to get better pizza

By Greg W |

At age 65 I've eaten a lot of pizza over my lifetime. I can say unequivocably that this is the best pizza I've had outside of Italy. It even compares with those pizzas. If you are in the Portland area and you like pizza this is a definite must stop. Be prepared to wait though, we got there at 5:30 and there was already an hour and a half wait even though they open at 5 o'clock.

Amazing

By D L |

This is without a doubt the best pizza I have ever had. I love it! One size, two toppings...........pretty simple but its outstanding. The restaurant itself is a little Portland funk, with a very cool and hip crew working. Friendly, informative and just downright nice. We the sausage and pepper..........again amazing Enjoy

Excellent salads and pizza

By ToddandKaren |

Had the caesar salad and a large cheese pizza. Fresh ingredients on the salad and the pizza was cooked perfectly with a litte char on the crust. Sat at the bar and watched Monday night football on their very large screen. Service was friendly and very attentive.

Delicious

We were taken here by relatives and they were right to do so...the service was so friendly and the choice excellent..delicious pizzas and great atmosphere.

Apizza, amazing

By journeywithbuster |

We were recommended Apizza Scholls by a fellow foodie in one of the food trucks and as Matt is a mad pizza lover and we had a car, we made the trip over. To say we weren't disappointed is an understatement - the pizza was incredible and the service friendly. The house wine, at $6 a glass was lovely and perfect with the pizza. We're not surprised that it's so popular and packed out from 5pm. We manged to book a table, for 5.15 earlier that day, but you can go without one.

Best pizza in Portland and closest to Brooklyn available here

By ThePmizzle |

FANTASTIC. I am a pizza nut. I have gone on pilgrimages to Italy, taken classes in New York, have three pizza cook books and love all styles in their own way. And based on that I will say...If you like Brooklyn-style pizza, this may be as good as it gets in Portland. (I say this because I have only had Forkish's pizza by the slice at Pine Street Market, so until I have fresh pie, I can't count Ken out). And not just the best around here, it is just plain excellent. Crust was perfect, a crunch on the bottom, but a retaining bready integrity that held together if you folded it, giving it the same texture as the NY greats like Lombardi's or Grimaldi's. Same high-temp oven with light scorching to give the crust a bitter burn that balances with the yeasty dough perfectly. One area that was a little different, when you got to the crust ring, and tried it sans toppings...well, if you closed your eyes you could believe you were eating rustic bread at a country French restaurant. A little different that Brooklyn, but it worked for me! Toppings were great quality as well, awesome pepperoni and very solid fennel sausage, which seems unusually hard to find in Portland. Sauce was excellent as well. The balance of toppings, cheese, sauce, and the complex crust is perfect. And don't worry, they won't let you mess that up, they limit toppings you are allowed to make sure you get a good pie. Now, that might seem a little 'big brother' but is definitely worth putting up with their rules and general haughtiness (service was great, not rude at all, I just mean the "we don't seat people until everyone is here, and if you aren't on time, we give your table away" attitude). Besides, the three topping rule is one you should follow for this type of crust, even if it isn't enforced, and Lombardi's in Manhattan has the same rule for the same reason.

While in downtown Portland we decided to grab a couple Ubers and make the 10 minute drive from downtown to Apizza Scholls and I can tell you it was well worth it I love pizza and this place ranks in my top 10 we had a group of 11 people so I was able to try an assortment of pie and everyone I tried was great even the mini pepperoni. The also have a vintage video game room where yours truly set the new record on Ms Packman. Overall a must in Portland if you like pizza.

Sunday Lunch at Apizza but Ran Out of Pizza Dough....

By Sylvie R |

We were looking forward to having Apizza pie for lunch Sunday Nov 12, 2017 so we took a Bus from Downtown only to be asked to leave because they ran out of Pizza Dough... We arrived before 2.00PM and according to their website they were closing at 3.00PM. We will not be coming back from Montreal to try their Pizza... Disappointing and rather Poor Business planning.... You definitely should call if they ran out of Pizza...

Awesome pizza

This is a great place for pizza in a town full of great pizza. Very busy at night and they close the place when they run out of dough. Never seen that before...

Worth the Trip

My brother in law had been raving about this place as having the best pizza and he was right! We ordered 4 flavors halved into 2 Pizzas and I loved the Margherita best! Paired well with the a glass of Oktoberfest beer! Definitely worh the 2 hour drive from Seattle and 12 hour plane ride from Manila!

Go Someplace Else! Many Better Options!

By Tony F |

Would love to say that I was able to give a "full" review of the food but I can't as I was not able to eat anything. Walking in on a Saturday night at 8:25, I was quickly asked if I had a reservation. I did not. I was then rudely told that they were out of pizza. Wait a minute.....hold your horses... OUT OF PIZZA???? You mean to tell me that a "PIZZA JOINT" is out of "Pizza" and on a Saturday night??? I'm sure you can imagine my surprise hearing this. So I promptly left and went to an amazing pizza place. At the end of the day, any restaurant that has rude staff and poor operating practices, should be avoided. I'm in the area often but will make sure this place is never on my list.

Finally!

By nvmd55 |

Having grown up in New Rochelle, NY, I have a good idea what pizza should taste like. After 45 years of looking I finally have found the pizza I remember. It was cooked perfectly with just the right amount of bend to the tip. Apizza Scholls not only has a true NY pizza, but an excellent wait staff. Will return whenever I’m in Portland.

Still the best pizza in Portland even if it’s just carry out.

By Rick+Jan |

Miss going in and having a bottle of wine with our pie but at least we were able to still indulge in the best pizza in Portland. You call in and pay then do pick up. We had a 6:00 pick up time and got there 7 minutes early and our hot pies came out at............ you guessed it 6:00. Got to give them credit. They figured out how to do it the best way possible during COVID. Great job people. See you inside soon.

Slipping...and I have no ax to grind

By HLW648 |

We are from Hawaii and have always looked forward to a stop at Apizza Shoalls when in Portland. I have to say we found the service excellent, we shared a tasty caesar salad; but the pizzas themselves (we ordered two for our group) were just not as we remembered them. The crust was thicker and less crisp. On the one with truffle oil, the taste of the oil was markedly absent. The NY Red lacked flavor too. I think there have been changes here that we just don't know about. This will no longer be on my "must" list when in Portland. (Could it be that on the weekends they have a different staff cooking? We were there on a Monday night this time.)

Apizza Scholls keeps on rocking!

By rlcolley |

2nd visit here. This time with some friends from Alaska. I can't say enough about their pizza. Perfect crust, fresh toppings, cool vibe. My party shared an amore pizza, pepperoni, and margahrita pizza. All were excellent. I was bragging hard to my friends and they were not disappointed. Apizza Scholls is the Portland place for pizza, get some!

Tasty thin crust pizza!

By Travellover6128 |

I would highly recommend booking in advance, otherwise you will be waiting 30+ mins for a table a peak times. It's a small cozy restaurant, serving excellent pizza, which comes in one size.....large! They recommend a max of 3 toppings per pizza, which is good advice, as the base is extremely thin. We had the Apizza Amore with Olympia Provisions Capicola on the top, which was very tasty. Prices are on the slightly high side and the tables are extremely close together but its a great option for pizza lovers. Go hungry and you will still leave with a to go box !

Great Pizza, fun and attentive staff

By John M |

The pizza was great, even the "white" with out sauce, that I voted against ordering. They had a decent selection of local draft beers also. The staff was great and very patient, putting up with our large group who could not decide on what to order. A fun and casual atmosphere and reasonable prices. They recently doubled the size of the place and it was still pretty busy for the Tuesday night we were there. And the salad was good too!

Great Pizza...Worth the wait.

By Julie H |

We visited Apizza Scholls June 2016, after reading some reviews about the "Best Pizza in Portland". We love to visit new pizza places and almost always make that one of our stops while we are out. This place lived up to the hype. There is a place outside to start the line on the sidewalk. They open at 5:00, and we got in line on a weekday about 4:30. There were several locals who were regulars in line with us, and even in this large city, they chose to wait in line out on a sidewalk to get into this place. The pizza was great. Woodfired style. Good cheese and we really liked the sauce. Our favorite was the cheese with basil.

Just the best pizza ever!

By Gengis25 |

The pizza was just amazing. I love pizza but most of all I really want pizza that have a thin base and these did just that. My first experience of a massive American pizza and it really hit the mark. I did a half and half with my wife and the pizza was perfect in every way. They had an extremely think base, crispy crust, generous and well flavoured toppings and it went great with the amazing Caesar salad. Out of all the places I ate in on my trip to Portland it will be this pizza I will miss the most!

I Thought the pizza was good.

By Cait Wudruf |

We went to dinner here to have pizza, the salad was like just lettuce and i wish they should've cut it into pieces so I don't eat so awkward. other than that the pizza was good.

Best Pizza in Portland

If you want the best Pizza in all of Portland then look no further than this place. Loved the quick fired crusts and base and a large selection of toppings to choose from.

Lives up to the hype

Six family members went to Apizza Scholls on a busy Friday night for a birthday celebration (mine and son-in-law). Fortunately we had made reservations in advance -- the wait for walk-ins was close to an hour-and-a-half at 6:30 p.m. Our booth was ready in a jif and we scanned the small, but tempting menu -- we were all hungry so everything looked good. We quickly settled on large orders of a classic Caesar salad and their fresh greens with apple, roasted parsnips, peppers and other goodies. The two together were more than adequate for the six of us and we cleaned our plates. The Caesar was especially notable with large leaves of cold, crisp romaine, large shavings of parmigiana reggiano and plenty of anchovies for all. The main attraction was the pizza -- two 18 inch pies with superb tomato sauce and fresh mozzarella and parmesan cheese forming the base. We added Canadian bacon and red onions to one pie, and sausage, pepperoni and mushrooms to the other. The restaurant allows a maximum of three toppings per pizza -- perfectly fine in my book as too many toppings can hide the fresh, spicy goodness of quality ingredients. IMHO, both pies were top-notch. Each pie was cut into 8 slices -- we devoured 13 of the 16 and I plan to enjoy the leftovers this evening! We brought two bottles of wine from our cellars -- two NW Italian varietals from area wineries we enjoy (a Tuscan blend and a barbera). Corkage is a modest $10; but the well-selected, but small wine list is also nicely priced with bottles from the low 20's to about $40. Some of the best pizza ever -- especially welcome since our former go-to place in Falls City has quit producing pizza on a regular basis. :-( Apizza Scholls can certainly help fill that void. Outstanding!

Great Pizza!

By Hayley Rose |

Come in hungry because their pizzas are HUGE (18 inches), but they are great! They have a lot of specialty pizzas, but we stuck to the classics. They were great.

Incredible

By Nancy A |

We ended up going for lunch on a Sunday-they serve lunch on Saturday and Sunday. The pizza was unbelievably delish-had the Sausage and Mama pizza and split a caeser-which was also excellent. Great experience.

OMG - So delicious!

By hcmc_taylors |

We kind of stumbled upon this pizza joint. We had just arrived in Portland and gotten settled in our apartment and were ready to eat. We talked with the landlord and mentioned we were going to a different pizza joint and he indicated that this place was right down the street and if we drove by and didn't see people waiting outside then to give it a chance because it was good pizza and close to where we were staying. So that is what we did. We drove by didn't see a line and stopped. Upon arrival we were immediately sat at a table and given some water and menus. After numerous questions to understand how we could order and different options we decided on 1/2 pizza as make your own with choices of arugula, garlic, mushrooms, green olives, and house made sausage AND the bacon bianca. My dinner companion also got the salad. We each had our own choice of wine as well. Everything was delicious. The wine was chilled and smooth. The pizza was hot and so good. It was very large and we had to take a few pieces back home but our favorite was the bacon bianca. The bacon was so great - I wish they sold it separately as a take home item to cook. I would definitely go back to this pizza joint and recommend it to others.

Best pizza around

By spdunk |

Visited Portland and heard this the best in town. No doubt - it was great with their own house made sausage and bacon. Great crust with a fresh taste and crispy bottom. One pizza easy feeds three and maybe four. The wedge salad was good too with a green creamy dressing.

Big tasty pizza

By Lee T |

This is a very popular place as people were lined up at the door before they opened. Service was fast, pizza was very good. 3 people, 2 pizzas and lots left to take home.

Apizziation!

By Yvonne H |

Fabulous find! We were in the Portland area for the day and we found this place by some reviews. They open at 11:30 am and there was a line waiting for them to open, that was a very good indication of things to come. I got a traditional margherta and my hubs got a PBJ. Pineapple Bacon (Canadian) and jalepeno. Fabulous fabulous fabulous. We will definite return when back in the area! You won't be disappointed if you love pizza like we do.

Still outstanding.

By Jefftimb |

There have been rumors that it has slipped. Without question those rumors must have been started by either the competition or non pizza lovers. My wife and I have been a fan for years. We had a delightful pizza experience last night. Yes , you may have to wait for a table, but in my humble opinion it is well worth the slight delay in soothing your pizza craving. We sat in the bar enjoying a glass of the house red, within a short time our table was ready. Our server,Erin, was prompt in getting our order. We devoured the Caesar salad, fresh lettuce, proper dressing, just the right amount of cheese. We ordered the blanco pizza with house cured bacon. Simply one the best pizzas around. The crust was perfect, just right amount of char ,coupled wth chew. The cheese and bacon blended perfectly, creating a great pizza. We spend half the year in Phoenix, which is the home of Pizza Bianco ,by reputation one of the best pizzas in the country, Apizza Scholls gives it a run for the title of " best pizza".

Great Pizza!!

By jessZ91KV |

We were in Portland for a couple of days during our vacation and we had seen this restaurant on a cable show months before coming and took note to visit. Glad we did. This pizza is great. Trying to find parking in the area was tough and it took more than 20 minutes to finally get parked about three blocks away. We had their Bacon Bianca and then chose our own toppings for our second pizza. Both were delicious and the crust is amazing. If you are in the area check this place out. They don't open until 5 weeknights so make note of that.

Best Pizza in Portland? Not sure about that...

By Dawn N |

After visiting Portland numerous times and moving here permanently 4 years ago, we finally got around to visiting Apizza Scholls, since realizing that they are open weekends for lunch. We arrived a few minutes before 11 on a Sunday, hoping that we wouldn't have to wait in a huge line and were rewarded with a parking spot right out front and a place behind one other person! Yay! (There are too many wonderful places to eat in this town to wait in a huge line, IMHO.) We were seated promptly as they opened, and taken care of by the friendly server. We had checked out the menu online prior so knew just what we wanted plus their limitations for weekends (11" pies only) and their restrictions (a maximum of 3 toppings per pie.) I had meatball with red onion and husband had Italian sausage with fresh garlic. The beet salad sounded interesting, but we were there for PIZZA! I'm a meatball fanatic, and these house made yummies did not disappoint - sliced, well seasoned, nice texture and the red onion complimented them. The Italian sausage is also house made, tasty and generous. Husband reported that he couldn't really taste the garlic, however. He was disappointed in the amount of char on the crust edges and bottom (he called it burnt) and would have liked more cheese. Both pizzas were a little heavy on the char to our liking. We're hearty eaters at lunch, but even though these pies are thin crust, we each had a couple of pieces left to take home. We could definitely have shared with an appetizer or salad along with the pie. And at $13 per pie we felt the price was right. All in all, a quality pizza but probably wouldn't return - we like Ken's Artisan better...Now if only Ken's was open at lunch!

Tasty pizza, great drinks!

By FABJourney |

Very authentic pizza experience. Always very crowded, but you can grab a drink while you wait. Good selection of local and international beers.

Baffled by the Lines

By restats |

One would think this was a pizza place that is sooo good that people will wait hours to get in and have a pie. Some have even learned that order it to go and come in and take it home - no wait. We came here when it first opened and it was rally good. Then we came one Valentine's day and voila, no wait. It seems people don't do pizza with their sweethearts. So rather than wait in line we stayed away for a few years while we enjoyed pizza elsewhere. Well, we went there last Sunday after 6PM and waited for a half hour for a seat at the bar and ordered a Sausage and Mama pizza. When it arrived it was overcooked, burnt crust and with so little sausage we wondered how they could call it a sausage pizza. There was a crumb of sausage on each slice, come on folks for $24 you can be more generous than that. The tomato and cheese were minimal but the peppers were lovely and plentiful. All in all, this was not the great pizza we had loved in the past, a disappointing pie. So, no more waiting in line for us. I just went on their site and found they now take reservations of which we were not aware. So, if you have to go, do that.

Best of the west!

By Villager |

Simply the best pizza I've ever had west of the Hudson - and I've had a lot. Delicious crispy, yet chewy crust, fresh sauce, cheese and homemade toppings. Caesar salad was tops as well. Service was on point. The pizza is so good that we were talking with neighboring tables about it to debate what style it most resembled (New York? New Haven?), and what aspect of their preparation had the biggest impact on the quality. I lived in SF for almost 10 years and often traveled in Southern California. Nothing in those places comes close. Nice work, Portland.

Delicious!!

Being from the Northeast, I thought I knew good pizza. This was some of the best pizza I've had! Very busy on a Friday night but worth the wait.

Excellent Pizza, Condescending Inattentive Service

By CondeCox |

Ok, I live walking distance from what is generally considered the best pizza joint in America's best foodie town---Portland. And the pizza is excellent. But the service is generally and too often condescending. Even when walking there to pick up a $30 pizza pie to go, and ordering an $8 beer to sip on while I wait, I was told to leave the bar and go sit by the front (cold air) front door, for the stated reason that the bar is reserved for not-to-go patrons. I picked up my pie after sitting in the corner sipping my beer, and in the meanwhile no one had sat down at the bar---it remained empty. This seems like a place that has lost its local connection in some respects. The owner seems generally not to be in residence very often. Indeed, when east side Portland restaurant owners are in residence, their presence is felt in many ways. Apizza Scholls seems less and less that kind of place, and I predict, without a change of heart and presence by the owner, this place will close within 3-4 years.

Lives up to the hype!

By BallardGirlForever |

So this is one pizza joint that totally lived up to the hype! We had the salami and green olive pizza and it was the perfect mixture of fatty, salty salami, creamy whole milk mozzarella with a crust that was both chewy & crisp. I think the photo says it all. I also need to mention the staff, everyone was gracious and friendly without it feeling fake or "forced". I HIGHLY recommend reservations, they make a limited amount of dough and are known to run out. I made reservations 3 weeks ahead and even then had a very limited selection of times to choose from.

Best pizza ever

By Laurie P |

It's very difficult to believe that there is better pizza in Portland than in Italy or NYC, but it's true. Crisp crust, fresh ingredients and savory choices. We love it so much that I actually brought an entire pizza on the plane from PDX to Washington DC for my husband. The owner signed the box for me. Every time we visit, we go to Apizza Scholls even when its not geographically convenient or we don't have time.

The best pizza I've ever had in my life

Not sure what the couple of bad reviews were all about. What a joke is all i can say. I think anyone that can't taste the best pizza should just go get a Domino's that's what you deserve. The people that run and own this place are amazing and they have the best pizza I've ever had in my life and I'm 56 years old. Been to New York had pizza sent from New York and this place has the best flavors and most incredible crust ever not another place can hold a candle to my Favorite pizza place in this whole world, I"m a super foodie and I can't wait to go visit my son that just moved to Portland from Ca.First place I'll hit on the way back from the airport.Thank you to all the great people from the bartender to the waitress and the guy that brought out our pizza. Best pizza... ever.

By Scott |

We figured we've had a pizza a week for 30 yrs (approx 1500). From crappy $2.99 frozen, to 'slices' in NY, to the famed Moose's Tooth in our home (ANC). We've had them in every corner in North America; and we make a terrific home-made. But... last night's was the best we've had. Thin crust cooked to perfection, and the best part, the customer might be wrong. That's why they have rules for how they'll prepare a pizza. There's definitely a minimalist approach to how many ingredients they'll put on a pizza; but it's because they do know better, and they are not going to sacrifice their product. Service is great and fun. It's easy to see they have a system. That may not work for all, but we'll go back.

As a East Coast native, this pizza ain't too bad

By Liz K |

Apizza Scholls has prettyyy good pizza and quality food. As someone from the east coast - born and raised - I'm a bit picky with my pizza. But, I'll have to give it to Apizza Scholls - definitely solid pizza. Great crust and awesome choice of toppings. There's a line though - so I'd suggest going 15-20 minutes before they open to snag a seat!

Excellent Pizza and Atmosphere

By S-Helix |

I've been wanting to take my kiddos here for quite some time and the stars finally aligned to make it happen. Expect a long line if you didn't make reservations. Expect helpful staff for first timers. Expect your kids to ask repeatedly to play the coin-op retro games they have there. Expect full happy stomachs after the visit. It all happened, I swear. We ordered the Half and Half as suggested by our wait staff. I think her name was Margo. It was delicious, and the Ceasar Salad was excellent as well. It was the first time my kids asked me when we're coming back to this place. I answered. "Soon... Very Soon".

Great food - make a reservation!

By Arpana01 |

My family wanted pizza so I looked at Trip Advisor and I heard about this quirky pizza place in Portland, It did not disappoint. I tried to get a reservation on their website, but they were full for the evening. So here's the thing because of the 24 hour process behind the pizza dough, there are only a certain number of pizzas they can make each day. Then that's it folks, so a reservation means you get the dough and you need to look at the website to make sure if you want 1 or more pies. It's quirky but worth it. Make sure to get the Caesar salad - the best dressing hands down ever! We had a basic pie with the addition of garlic and red onions, amazing! The crust is crunchy, you can taste the fresh ingredients. It was a really good pizza. The 18 inch pie fed three including a teenager with 3 slices leftover. Try this local spot, but make a reservation or go early in the evening.

Found hair on my plate. No response from the restaurant about that. Been a patron for years and years. I'll be going to Ken's pizza from now on

Best pizza in town.

By Keller_Kat |

We went to Scholls last night and loved it. The Pizza dough and crust was baked to perfection, the tomato sauce on the pizza was really tasty and the size of the pizza? HUGE. We shared one pizza and it was plenty. I would recommend to order one pizza for two people, or one pizza for three girls ;-) anyway, Scholls pizza is super tasty. I want to go back soon - like now. :) it’s not a fancy restaurant. It’s a restaurant to go to with friends and family. It’s very casual.

Delicious pizza

By MoniqueAWP |

We ordered 2 pizzas. My favorite was the truffle oil pizza, yum. We waited weeks for a reservation and finally got in for dinner. You can order wine/drinks, but also can bring your own wine and pay corkage. The pizza tastes even better the next day.

Tartufo2 has my vote

By lilicedt |

5.0 star rating 10/21/2016 1 check-in Now that, my friends, is a freaking pie! Came here for a pre-birthday dinner with new and old friends. We were 4 couples (8 people) and shared 3 pies and a salad. Everything was perfection. THE VIBE Intimate, family-run pizzeria feel. It's upscale for a pizzeria, but still very comfortable and casual. There's usually a line, but we got in for a table of 8 with about 15 minutes wait on a friday night -- not bad. THE SERVICE Service was friendly, casual, and funny. Everyone's down to earth, and happy to make honest recommendations. Food and drinks came out fast and correctly. THE DRINKS Shared 2 bottles of the house cab and it was the perfect way to wash down our slices of heaven. Others got the many delicious beers on tap; it is Portland, better get your beer on! THE PIZZA HOLY CHIHUAHUA. This pizza is delicious, and I really really love pizza. The crust is chewy to just the right amount, with a little crunch but not enough to hurt your mouth. The cheese is in perfect proportion. We had 1) the bacon bianca, with full strips of bacon on top; 2) the Tartufo2 The Electric Boogaloo, with mushrooms, sea salt, and truffle oil on top; and 3) the Apizza Amore (margherita pizza with cured pork shoulder). All were amazing in their own ways. I always love a margherita base, and this one was delicious. The star of the night, though, and the reason for this 5 star rating, was the Tartufo2 pie. It. was. perfect. I am a sauce girl, and this no-sauce pizza is my favorite one I have ever had in my life. The textures and melding flavors were spot on, and have me still drooling! And if that wasn't enough, It's right next to QuarterWorld.

Great Pizza

Quest for great pizza in Portland has been satisfied. This is one of the best pizzas we have found. Located in the Hawthorne area, there is only neighborhood street parking but is well worth the walk. Pizza crust was excellent, thin and baked to perfection. The place is small and crowd large so large parties need a reservation. We were lucky to sit at the bar and have personalized service. Price is right and menu is eclectic and delicious. You won't regret the trip

Delicious!

By Heather K |

We read the reviews and made sure we were in line at 4:30pm to secure a spot at a table when they opened at 5. The restaurant is tiny with only 6 tables, so we ended up eating at the bar, as the larger tables are reserved for groups of 4 or more. It was definitely worth the wait, the pizza had the perfect cheese to grease ratio and the toppings were fun. Yes, it doesn't compare to pizza from Italy, but it has been one of the best pizzas I've had in North America in a long time. The staff were also super friendly and service was quick!

If you enjoy paying over $35 for 1 badly burned pizza , eat here!

By Amy C |

I guess places that enjoy a cult following dont have to be goid, ethical or take pride in the quality of the food the send out. You already have everyone hoodwinked.so poor fools like me get excited to finally get to try a legendary pie from Apizza Scholls and it is burnt to a crisp with that acrid aftertaste everywhere. Not well down and browned but charred. Who enjoys eating burnt food? What kind of restaurant serves obviously burned , ruined pizza that even managed to somehow end up cold. Do not recommend but I'm sure you don't care. I see what you think is ok as y to serve the dumb masses. Pictures do not come close to fully showing how bad this pizza was.

Amazing!

By Vegas Gar |

Saw this place on No Reservations and wanted to give it a try. This was probably the best pizza I've ever had! We had a pizza with Canadian bacon, mushrooms and onions. The flavor was unbeatable!l The big deal about this place is the handmade crust, and there is no exaggeration, it is incredible. They go easy on the sauce so all the flavors can be tasted. There are rules here about how you order your pizza, so don't get your panties in a twist if they tell you you can't order a pizza a certain way. The Caesar salad was amazing and the dressing is handmade. Plus, they have a vintage video game arcade in the back so you can have some fun while you wait for your pizza. This place does not disappoint, so come check it out.

great pizza, excellent crust

By Sondra G |

APizza Scholls is without a doubt the best pizza I've had. The crust is flavorful, and with just the right amount of brown and chewiness. The toppings are top quality. The number of toppings are limited, and the result is a pizza with lots of flavor, but not overloaded so everything falls off or the dough is soggy.

What a pizza should be

By lsc_Denver |

Three of us shared their pig-and-pineapple pizza and loved it. All their pies are 18", thin crust, with well-proportioned toppings and balanced flavors. This isn't the place to go for fresh veggies (they do have 2 salads) but if what you want is excellent pizza, this is for you. Their selection of wines by the glass and beers kept us happy, too. We had only a short wait on a Monday evening, but they take reservations and that would be the thing to do, especially as the weekend approaches. Thanks, Trip Advisor reviewers, for letting us know about this great spot.

Apizza Shoals shines

This is some damn good pizza. Judging from the mass of local Portlandians there I know this was a good coice. Love how they bake the crust, truly a must.

Hurry up and eat your pizza!

By roopsharda |

I'm likely on the fringes of reviews of this place because although the pizza was good, I really don't feel that the food itself or the dining experience match the buzz. We visited Portland with our two children over 4 days, this is an annual trip for us. I repeatedly found during my restaurant searches online that Apizza Scholls is where I need to go if I want the best pizza in the Pac NW, so this was a no brainer! As described by previous patrons there was a line up before the place even opened so I got in line withou my family-I left them in the car to spare other people in the line up from having to hear my kids ask, "are we there yet." At the front of the line I was told I would need to go to the back of the line because my entire party was not present....despite them being in the car parked parallel to the restaurant. When we finally got in, the pressure to order food made me forget that I was even hungry. The waitress was surprised each time we asked for some more time to look at the menu and didn't offer any suggestions for what she thought might be a good pizza to start with for folks who are not return customers....so I closed my eyes and pointed to be a good girl and the pizza was good....not spectacular. But maybe I was just trying to eat as fast as I could to avoid having to deal with the woman who basically was looming over our table to entire time watching for the first site of the bill so that she could jump at her turn to be seated. I felt like offering her a slice of our pie just so I could actually chew the peice I was holding myself... I'm not into high pressure dining and acid reflux from gobbling my food down....but if you are, this is the place for you! Enjoy :)

Best. Pizza. Ever.

There is nothing else left to be said besides...BEST PIZZA EVER. And we have tried a LOT of pizza in our lifetime :) Be sure to make a reservation!

Apizza Scholls. My new favorite pizza place!

By James P |

I was visiting Portland for the first time and we ate at the Apizza Scholls. I love all types of pizza and am always looking to try different places. This was the best pizza that I've had in a long time. I ordered the Sausage & Mama pizza. The crust was a little blackened and crispy. The sauce and toppings were perfect taste and quantity. I will be back the next time I'm in Portland!

No. 1 and it's not close.

There's always a wait. But there's a reason it's always crowded; it's simply the best New York style pizza on the West Coast.

In the top 5 pizzas ever

By Rick+Jan |

Have not been back in 3 years. Visiting our son and it was so good last time asked them to take us back. Just as good. Must get there early as when they run out of crust they close. They do not take reservation and there is usually a line out front to get in. We travel the world for business and this is in the top 5 pizzas ever to go in my face.

What is the fuss all about?

By WilliamEBerry |

I read the food reviews in the Oregonian regularly and this place consistently gets voted the top pizza in Portland. Why? We went a year or so ago right after they'd won yet again and thought it was OK but certainly far from the best pizza we've had in Portland - and we eat pizza EVERY Friday night. So, we found ourselves on Hawthorne again this weekend so we thought we'd give it another chance. Same. Pretty good crust, but the rest of it was average AT BEST. Just does not live up to the hype. Get out and try other places, people.

Very good and unique pizza, worth the wait.

A friend recommended we try this place and the it was worth the wait. The pizza menu isn't your traditional menu and I really enjoyed the

Best NY style pizza in Portland (although they are from San Fran!)

By Rhea B |

If you ever want really good pizza, chewy, crispy, amazing sauce, cheese, large slices (that you DO NOT EAT WITH A KNIFE AND FORK) then this is the place. We go at least every couple of months -- it's a family fav. Being from the east coast, this is the type of pizza we crave. Get there early and expect lines! Or go at off times (later eve on a Sunday is idea or mid-week lunch). Worth the wait.

Divine Crust

By Timothy C |

Returned to this top-rated pizza palace last night, and was rewarded with the perfect pie. Again. In addition to using the best ingredients, this place consistently delivers pizzas with crust baked to perfection. Good wine list and taps with local craft beers.

Portland’s best

Yep. Super great. Strongly suggest the truffle oil. Great chewy crust. Tight race with Ken’s Artisan pizza. You can go on your own pizza tasting your and decide. Caesar is fantastic.

My first time here. There's a lot of hype about Apizza Schols. Most of it is accurate. Not my favorite crust in town, but the pizza was solid.

We always make time for Apizza Scholls

By Steve S |

We visit every time we're in Portland. The pizza (especially the crust) is never disappointing. Good wine and beer selections, with video games for the young and young at heart. Be prepared to wait...

Enjoyable pizza

By Ready2Travl2 |

We didn't have reservations and it was no big deal (just a 10 min wait for dinner on a weekend). Now that we live in Portland, we wanted to find a good pizza place to call our own...as close as we can to our old Neapolitan pizza place (surprisingly, it's pretty limiting). We went to 4-5 different pizza places so far (all disappointing) and this place at this time is top pick. Pizzas here are ridiculous size (18 inch pizza, sheesh)....on but 1 pizza is more than enough for 2 people to share. They have no prosciutto pizza, but we ordered Pizza Amore (with Capicola). It was good - dough has flavor (though risky to have pizza so huge as it can make the dough a bit dry), toppings were generous but not overdone. Good char consistency. It definitely was not true Neapolitan pizza, but it was enjoyable. Suggestion: smaller pizza size so you can achieve better cooking consistency of the dough. We'd return for sure (or just take it to go).

Pig and Pineapple

By Life_Foodie_Seeker |

Most important tip... try and make a reservation, if not get there early. We stole two seats at the bar and were happily greeted by our server. The beer selection was small but satisfied the pizza and beer relationship with a few good beers. The pizza is crispy and the cheese has the good kind of chew that leaves you craving for a whole bowl of just the cheese. The pig and pineapple pizza matched well with the red onion. I was a little bummed I couldn't create my own with more than 3 toppings, including the tree but the little piggy didn't disappoint. Not my favorite pizza ever but hey it might be someone else's. Great customer service and great pizza, make it totally worth the trip.

One of the Best Pizzerias in Portlandia!!!

By DavidWhitefieldJones |

So where do I begin? I guess I should describe myself as a pizza snob since TripAdvisor does not allow foul language. Suffice it to say I love food but am also a heartless reviewer when it comes to a restaurant falling short of the mark in any way. So with that qualifier out of the way, we begin. What is Apizza you may ask? Apizza is the style of pizza served in Napoli, Italy, arguably the home of pizza. So it would appear the owners of Apizza Scholls are sending us a message about their commitment to tradition. As far as the Scholls part of the name you are on your own but it ends up on everything from towns to streets and even ferries around these parts. Apizza Scholls is one of those curious places that is not going to change from what they see as a successful approach, and I for one am glad. Success shall not spoil Apizza Scholls although many might want changes such as a bigger venue or making more dough each night for goodness sakes. Yes you heard me. These people only make so much dough each day and when it is running low, they come out and cut the line off. I and my son have twice been right at the cutoff and begged to be allowed some small thin crusted pizza only to twice have the person with the distasteful duty of cutting folks off from pizza heaven tell us we are good and cut off the folks behind us. Is this genius marketing or something Portlandic about dough making sustainability or just a problem with dough mixer bowl sizes? I know not. BUt suffice it to say that when you have been cut off...you want that pizza all the more. It happened to me the first time I went there. Yes. I was cut off with no pizza and no appeals were granted then. So it may have effectively clouded my judgement for all times. Dunno, but on to the pizza. The last funny quirk about this shop is that if you want to pile on the toppings you will be dismissed and denied as a pizza fool. Apparently this is for your own protection as the pizza perfection they are seeking to produce for the aficionado and fool alike is a crisp crust, properly cooked and textured pizza, which does NOT occur when a pizza has been ignorantly over loaded. Do not despair. Save disgruntled for somewhere else. This really is an altruistic move on their part. Just cooperate and reduce the toppings because you are about to get a very good pizza with a real super chew and crust all in harmonious balance with sauce amount and toppings to make a single thing, a pizza, rather than a limp crust topped with many slipping and sliding ingredients, each tasted and seen as individual elements. No this is a melded unit. The good stuff. Start with a Pizza Margarita, an excellent choice to judge the ability of a pizza house, and enjoy. Apizza scholls makes one of the best I have ever had. I wont talk much about the quirky wait, the waiting area, trying to get to your table next door, bar seating etc. You'll find that out once there. More importantly, all of the pizzas I've tried have been among the best in Portland and they make a wicked Caesar. You can order a bottle of wine and start on it while you wait. Just don't get there after 8:30 or they may cut you off Bro.

Best ever

By soloman9993 |

I already reviewed this place, but want to add one note. For 30 plus years, the go to date for my wife I is pizza. We have eaten pizza all over the world, including Italy. My wife said the mushroom pizza here with truffle oil was the best she ever had. Pretty high praise. Service, beer and wine were good. Very busy, so be prepared to wait or eat at the bar, which is what we did.

Excellent Pizza - Great Service

By Richard F |

I'm from New Jersey where I thought we had the best pizza but Apizza Schollis beats our pizza. I think this is the best pizza that I have ever had, including pizza in Naples, Italy. Great Pizza and Great Service. A special thanks to our server Margo.

That is some tasty pizza

By RileyZarko |

My son, wife and I headed over to Apizza Scholls and gorged ourselves on pizza. This place is comfortable and fun to hang out in, my 15 year old son enjoyed playing the vintage Donkey Kong machine. The pizza is fantastic, perfectly sauced and balanced flavor. The Caesar Salad was cold and crisp. We arrived promptly at 5:00 PM and immediately grabbed a booth.

Excellent Pizza

Get their 1/2 & 1/2 pizza! We got red sauce on 1 side & white sauce on the other & it was wonderful. The crust was perfect, the atmosphere was fun & it was a great place to eat on a Tuesday night!

Lives up to the hype!

By Sarah M |

My boyfriend and I are were visiting Portland for a few days. We wanted to try some local pie. Heard great things about this place and stopped by. We immediately lucked out and found seats at the bar, seemed like there was quite a wait for larger parties. The staff was very friendly and helpful even though they seemed to be quite busy. We ordered the Amore, it was delicious! You could tell they used quality ingredients, the crust was cooked to perfection. The combination of cheeses literally melted in your mouth. The two of us almost ate the whole pizza, and I’m not even embarrassed about it! This pie competes with pizza I’ve eaten in Italy. Will definitely return next time I’m in town.

Still the best

By soloman9993 |

It is takeout only ubtil it runs out of dough, but it is still the best pizza I have ever had. Miss the in-house dining, which is supposed to return soon.

Well Deserved Reputation

By Chuck K |

Their pizza is among the best I've had. The homemade crust was flavorful, thin and baked perfectly. The toppings were first rate and also homemade. We had a half-and-half since our trio couldn't decided on just one option. Our choices were pizza amare (w/ homemade bacon) + sausage w/ peppers. Our favorite, though it was a close call, was the sausage and pepper combo since the meat's spicy zest was perfectly balanced with marinated pepper slices. One of the delights of this restaurant is the speed at which their pizza is baked (about 10 minutes from order to delivery) and the obvious pride that the chefs take in their work, personally delivering each order to the customer's table with a certain amount of flair. Scholl's is well known in Portland so reservations are a good idea, and can be mad via the internet.

Better than Napoli pizza

By Larry E |

We moved from Portland knowing pizza from Apizza Scholls would be one of the top things we would miss.Still true. In Italy, evev in Napoli we didn't find pizza to rave about. I know this place has gotten a number of national reviews. That has been evident in the number of fellow diners who have come to Portland to taste Apizza Scholl, among other of Portland's culinary delights. If what you like is deep-dish or mile-high toppings, go elsewhere. This is proper thin-crust pizza with limited toppings. The owner has been accused of being a pizza nazi because there is a strict limit on the number of toppings. We always order the classic Margarita with added anchovies. Never found better. We have a nearby pizza place in France that comes close to Apizza Scholls' thin crust, but we have threatened to bring our own jar of anchovies to add! Apizza scholls also offers an excellent Caesar Salad big enough to share with two or three. Go here unless you fear becoming pizza snobs like we have become.

Tasty and abundant food in a lively and energetic venue

By CaFoodRepublic |

The pizza here is great--a limited menu, but sizable portions, thin and crispy crusts, and superior ingredients make this a wonderful place to share a meal with a handful of friends. Ample seating, but the later you come, the longer the wait, and an hour or more is not uncommon. However, video games, conversation, and a well stocked and reasonably priced bar will more than keep you occupied. There is an option here for every dietary restriction (of which my group had some), but everyone will leave filled, happy, and cosseted in the comfort and welcome of this intimate restaurant not far from the Powells book store. Eminently worth the visit.

Hands down the best pizza I've had in Portland. Even better, the wait wasn't too bad (I've heard it gets packed!) and service was great. We had a plain pie and a surf & turf and one build your own and it was all excellent. I wished that there was more room in my belly so that I could consume more!! I highly recommend!

Battle for Best Pizza

By Marthapel |

Apizza Scholls is a two-room restaurant that regularly generates hour-long lines out the door for a chance savor their famous pies. The standard margarita pizza is a favorite, particularly topped with fresh arugula. Their caesar salad is excellent - chilled full-leaf romaine with fresh parmesean and a garlicy dressing - my favorite in Portland. There's nothing particularly fancy about Apizza Scholls. (They recently added a back room full of 1980's classic video games.) But their service and quality of food are consistently excellent. No wonder they have won the latest battles for Best Pizza in Portland. Best advice is to get there before they open and get in line. Otherwise, get comfortable, because it's worth the wait.

Dinner at Apizza Scholls was excellent. A short wait (15minutes) and we were quickly into a very fresh Caesar salad. Beer/wine selections were solid. And the pizza. Wow. It was spectacular. Crunchy crust, excellent sauce and super fresh ingredients made for a fun first dinner in Portland.

Good Pizza

Great Pizza. Thin crust, a little char, good ingredients, delicious. Would recommend. We sat at the bar and waited minimally, but others waiting for a table took awhile to be seated. Staff was fine.

Great pizza! Great with kids!

Pizza and salad were outstanding. Crust was crispy. Caesar salad was fresh with Parmesan reggiano. Kids ages 9, 11 and 13 loved it for the food and for the retro arcade games. Super fun night out with the family.
