Went here because it was recommended to us. Felt like a very un-LA-style restaurant. No frills, counter service, nothing fancy and a small menu. Had a burger and fries. The burger was good, but the fries were very average and kind of tasteless. Had an apple pie for dessert, which honestly was rather underwhelming. I do not really see what the hype is about with this place. I do not think that I would go back, given the other good options for food in LA.

Simply the best. Try to go early, we could be waiting in line. From the outside we would never guess how good it is. The place has been there forever. Great burgers and Fries. Make to sure to leave the room for the Apple Pie.

Picnic area is nice, but it’s the counters that make Apple Pan historic. They told us they are replacing the floors and inside will reopen in about a month. We had a burger, egg salad in a lettuce wrap, fries and the pie outside. All good, but better inside not wrapped in all that paper.

We were a little overwhelmed by the lack of seating, the number of people waiting, and the chaos at first. Within 5 minutes though, 2 spots opened at the counter and as we sat down, the owner/manager asked, "Ready?" We weren't but he was patient and it only took a minute to see the small selection of items offered. We went with the original steak burger with cheese-$9 and fries. (Highly recommended). It was served in less than 5 minutes and we were out in about 15. Their pies looked delicious but we weren't hungry enough for dessert. It is CASH ONLY but this "throwback" dinner was a wonderful find.

I've been eating here for decades. The burger is always amazing. The fries are fresh, real potatoes, and also amazing.

Since it had been raining there was no one sitting in the back patio area so the inside seating was packed. I ordered a cheeseburger to go, then seats became available. We sat down and ordered a coconut cream and a banana cream pie. The cheeseburger was good but it had way too much lettuce. The banana cream pie was delicious and had better flavor than the coconut.

The Apple Pan has been a landmark spot renowned for its burgers, fries and pies. You must go to experience the ambiance of this simplistic yet well oiled food machine. No reservations taken and depending on the time and day you go, there could be open seats or a wait to be seated. The menu is basic with either a hickory flavored burger or a steakburger. Either one is made with fresh meat and have great flavor. Basic and delicious.

American burger culture reportedly started in Southern California, and this is one of the places that started it. The Apple Pan ash been slinging burgers since before World War II, and I'm fairly certain that they've kept their menu the same over all that time: burgers, a few sandwiches, milk and sodas, and pie and ice cream. The only drawback? There's usually a line out the door, but I think that it's worth the wait. I lived in L.A. for eight years, was back in town to visit, and made a stop here a priority. I forgot that they're closed on Mondays, but came back and managed to score the rare night when there was a seat available right away. Love this place, and if you like burgers, I think you will too. ... Doing this write-up is like getting to go back again... good times!

I have been going here since 1980 and nothing has changed! The same waiters even! Don't even THINK of ordering anything but the Hickory Burger with cheese! It is the best hamburger I have ever had in my life; and I LOVE hamburgers! Great fries too and ALL of the pies are out of this world! The coffee is even fantastic! The service is quick and attentive! Just a wonderful place to go!

A step back in time to the counter service days, where quality and service mattered. Place thankfully hasn't changed much. Same burger I ate over 40 years ago. The prices have changed but high quality ingredients do t come cheap. While In n Out appears modeled after this establishment and serves up a good product, the Apple Pan Hickoryburger is in a class of its own. Yes get the fries - they're great. I hear the other menu items are winners as well. And the pies, fugedaboutit. Great great great. Please don't change a thing.

My tuna salad sandwich was expensive but was it ever good! My husband loved the egg salad sandwich. Beware that it is cash only and nothing over a $50 is accepted.

Think McFly at the old-school diner counter - " Lou, Get me a Milk...Chocolate" This place oozes with history - but is still immensely popular as we discussed with our waiter that Lady Gaga had been in the night prior. To the chagrin of the locals - our family ordered a tuna sandwich and a ham sandwich - huge portions and really very good. Awesome bread! The apple pie was fantastic and we enjoyed great counter-service. One of the locals told us his story of visiting regularly since his grandparents first brought him 40+ years prior and how the area had developed around the restaurant - with the owners always turning down opportunities to move or expand from this original location. You have to appreciate consistency, doing something really well for a long, long time and the pride and tradition of this place. Bring your cash (only) and carry-on the Apple Pan tradition!

The Apple Pan has been THE PLACE for a great burger & fries for my entire life - first went there in the early 1970's and went back a few days ago. It hasn't changed a bit and is still fantastic. This is an L.A. Institution for a very good reason - the food is terrific. Any "debate" about the best burger in L.A. is just a PR stunt - Apple Pan is the absolute best!

Love, love, love the original decor and ancient cash register. Super nice wait staff - fast and friendly. Very very clean. Fast service but no one rushes you. Banana cream, chocolate cream and pecan pies are amazing. We had between us tuna on rye, hickory burgers, steak burgers and fries. All great. No one asks how you want your burger, not that type of place. Even so, excellent flavor and quality. They don't stint on sides or accompaniments or coffee. Reasonable prices, great atmosphere and great food. What's not to love?

Haven't here in 3 years.. I was in the neighborhood so I stop by.. All I can say it was like going there for the first time.. Steakburger with cheese...yummy. Got the piece of apple pie to go....If you are visting or just move to LA this is must.. Forget the Shake Shake or Burger Lounge the is a trip to the 50's. If you don't eat meat anymore they have a great tuna salad and egg salad sandwiches.. Dang Its worth the trip for the Chocolate cream pie lol..

Honestly was not too impressed. Felt very rushed, but kind staff. I would rather get a McDonald's burger.

Happen to be on Pico coming from Santa Monica when the stomach began to growl...FEED ME! Arrived to fine us a spot in there small parking lot and proceed to fine a duce spot at the counter. Able to see the baker making fresh pies the the huge glass window. Killer Banana & chocolate cream pies being topped with fresh real wiped cream. Apple and pecan ready for a scope of Danish ice cream too. Ordered the steakhouse burger ( Tillamook Cheddar. 50cents extra) with a side of crispy fries. Secret sides yellow chilies and sweet butter pickles for the asking. Cash only. Great service by a whole contigency of Mexicano crew--cooks and waiters..so you know the place makes some jamimg awesome fresh eats. Still an awesome eatery.

Remembered seeing this place featured in a UCLA football game on TV as a Bruin pre-game tradition. A must eat place. Classic, classic classic from the original environment to a great burger and apple pie. Highly recommend.

Two of us stopped by for lunch on a Friday and, despite the tiny size of the restaurant's U-shaped counter, quickly bad seats and orders in. A shared order of fries, two hickory burgers, and house-made banana cream pie arrived, each well prepared and good enough to order on multiple visits. Add to that the charming, retro ambiance and wallet-friendly prices, and how could you not love it?

The perfect , best classic cheese burgers with a delicious fries and the seating are like classic bar

I have been eating at Apple Pan for 50 years! For decades because it was the best burger in town, and for the last decade because of nostalgia, but my most recent visit will sadly be my last. I have accepted the tired atmosphere of the restaurant and its unfriendly service because I refused to allow my better judgement to out-way my sense of nostalgia. The restaurant is dirty, the stools loose, uncomfortable, and sticky, and the floor greasy! The service unfriendly. The hickory burger is still an exceptional burger, but when my skin is crawling with "yuck" while eating no burger in the world is worth it! Good bye Apple Pan

They make the pie/whipped cream and the boysenberry was delish - we will just put that up front. The hickory burger and fries were good. Service was quick. I bussed there so didn't have to worry about parking. The counter seats about 20 people maybe and they cook right there in front of you. I really enjoyed the feel of the place.

Now I don't like Apple pie never have done, but my partner does. We drove past a few times and thought lets have a look. My partner was in heaven. For a small business to service 70 plus years is amazing. The service and the pie was fantastic.

Place is small they make burger infront of you but your smell will be like oil, its nice burger like we do it in home, try their apple pie so delicious

You grab a bar stool around a horseshoe shaped counter and can see your food being prepared. I tried the hickory burger - try it but ask for less sauce - and fries, very enjoyable. The service is attentive and personable. They even pour the ketchup for you on a separate plate. Cokes come from a can and are poured into a paper cone cup. The apple pie is baked in the bake but was a little less than expectations, still recommended as part of the experience.

I loved this place. They only take cash and have a limited menu. Best egg salad sandwich that I have had in my life. It was perfect. They are known for their hamburgers and pie. We had a banana custard pie… they divided the pie into two pieces and didn't charge extra.. the pie crust was excellent and the pie was very very good…would go back and would recommend to others…

The Apple Pan is a mid-century (mid-20th century, that is) diner in a once-trendy area of LA. You won't find anything gluten-free or paleo here, just the food your folks ate when they were teens. Hamburgers. Cold cuts in sandwiches. Water in paper cups with pointed bottoms that sit in specially designed chrome holders. Catsup (yeah) poured onto a paper plate so you can dip your fries. And what fries! Best you've had in years, and they arrive hot from the oil. The apple pie a la mode (which is the only way to have it) is okay. Lots of cinnamon, thin layer of apples. Good crust. The tab is higher than it was in the 1950s, and the place is a bit worn, but it's worth the trip. Do it.

This is simply the BEST hamburger and the BEST french fry spot in LA without a doubt. The is great competition, and Belcampo in Santa Monica comes close but this is the original and still the winner!

Great Hickory burger. Sliced in half with a coke. This is the real old style done right. Apple Pies is truly the 9th wonder of the world. Ya hafta wait until seat opens as there's limited seating. Luck you open very late.

Limited menu but great burgers that are really tasty. Fries are fab and the service is wonderful What a throwback---never change please

No reservations, stool seating, no fancy amenities..Just wait for a stool to open up, sit yourself down, order a burger, fries and pie and leave with a smile on your face and a belly that is happy.

Good food and quality! It is like going back in time to the Richie Cunningham days to a horse shoe bar and paper hats. It is small and busy so expect to wait but it is well worth it. A true Los Angeles instituion.

From the U.K. and really wanted to try this place out as have seen things about it online and George Motz (Hamburger America) recommended this place. I cook burgers and other foods and have a YouTube channel. The burgers were decent. The tuna sandwich was decent. The ham and cheese toasted sandwich was OK, but overpriced at $15. What really let the place down was the fries. $5 per smallish tray and we all agreed the worst fries we’ve ever had. Kind of stale, dry and no flavour. Overall for nearly $100 with tip, we were left very underwhelmed. Wish we’d gone to In N Out where the fries are 10 x better, burgers similar, and it would have been about half the price.

Take a step back in time to an easier life and you will find yourself at The Apple Pan burger bar. If your expecting tables and chairs well fogetit his is authentic 1930’s diner with bar only. Even the coffee machines are original. So when you’re in town don’t forget to stop in and have burger, fries and of course apple pie.

Amazingly good burgers and amazingly good pie at this “blast from the past” diner style restaurant in LA. It’s pretty simple but often the best places are. The size of the burger is really good and be prepared for a ton of fries. Sitting in back on a nice night is pretty much as close to perfect as you can get in this crazy world. Don’t expect amazing service, but the awesome food makes up for it.

Having little to do with apples, go to the Apple Pan for their burgers. It is a small place, all counter and you will wait. It is worth it. Locals flock to the place and it is tourist friendly. They make the best burgers and fries. The menu is limited so if you hat burgers I would go elsewhere. The service is friendly and fast. Parking is a bear, there is a small lot, always full, so get ready to park on the street and walk (and mind the meters and the parking signs). It is just the best.

I went to Apple Pan because I saw it on the travel channel. I liked the old feel of the restaurant. It's really small with no tables and only about 20 places to sit. I bought a burger and a piece of pie. The service was real good but I thought the food was only ok.

Excellent burger. Imagine a backyard cookout burger at its best. The hickory sauce is great and the pickles are amazing. A bit sloppy as it definitely needs the paper wrapping. Bun had a nice butter flavor. Patty seasoned well and seared heavy but still a bit pink on the inside. Probably top 3 burgers I have had and I eat a lot of burgers. Chocolate banana cream pie was a great compliment for desert. If it had a graham cracker crust instead of traditional crust it too would be 5 stars.

Stopped there for dessert after a movie at the Landmark. Counter seating only! Seats about 30? You walk in, wait for people to stand up, and then sit. Menu is basically burgers, fries, and pie, but that's okay. Shared fries (perfectly cooked) and a couple of pieces of pie. They serve the sodas from a can into cone shaped cups in silver holders. wish i had taken a pic. Worth a stop at least once.

Ok, the Apple Pan will never win a Michelin star but it's still the greatest. This Place has not changed a thing in over 70 years because it just doesn't need to. After all, why mess with perfection.Great burgers, fries, and apple pie.I can recommend it only!

My family and I have been coming to the Apple Pan ever since I can remember. Heck, there were (are) weekends where we'd make the drive from San Diego to Los Angeles just to dine at our favorite burger joint. This place is held dear to my heart as it holds many fond memories of my childhood and not to mention, my favorite burger in the world. My grandfather came to LA back in the day before its blooming. A restaurant owner himself, he knew the owner and the staff that still remains there today! They always remember our names, story, order, as soon as we walk in. I've always gotten and will continue to get the unsurpassed Hickory Burger with a classic cone served Coke, fries and Banana Cream Pie. Delicious! Fresh everything. Crisp lettuce, zesty pickles, melting cheese, and that one of a kind sauce! Definitely the kind a place I see myself bringing my kids to some day. Also worthy of mentioning... I've spotted a great deal of celebrities here including Joe Jonas whom signed my napkin. Be on the lookout!

Great old school place to have an old school burger. Pies are delicious as well and huge slices. Make sure to get a slice as take away to eat at home later. Burger was good, well packed and fresh.

Opened at 10801 West Pico Boulevard in the early 20th century, and under the “same ownership and management since April 11, 1947,” it was an odd set of circumstances that saw The Apple Pan serve two unexpected guests on Friday, yet despite a tumultuous twelve hours the persistently-packed diner managed to brighten spirits with fairly priced food and good service. Built on legendary Burgers and a staff that has called The Apple Pan home for longer than many guests have been old enough to chew, it is from parking behind the building that diners enter to find a U-shaped counter, all two-dozen seats filled with at least ten folks waiting and limited time necessitating a to-go order. Free of gimmicks, a well-culled menu of Sandwiches, Fries, Pies and Drinks offered from 11:00am until midnight or later on ever day but Monday, it was in exchange for $33.80 Cash that three bags were presented, everything prepared and packaged with care by a Hispanic gentleman who moved with efficiency. In-and-out in fifteen minutes, time to soak in the nostalgia unavailable, it was atop newspaper boxes outside that dining took place, hand-cut Spuds impressively crisp beneath an 85-cent slice of melted Cheese and the Hickoryburger juicy with a fine grind plus plenty of smoke that plays well off thick Iceberg Lettuce, Pickles and House Sauce that is like Ketchup with added spices. Remarkable without marketing, signage dating back decades, it is going back even farther that recipes for The Apple Pan’s Pies are dated, the eponymous Fruit less sweet than most even after adding a sidecar of cooking liquid while toasted Pecans on a bed of Georgia-style Jam offer good balance to Corn Syrup, Brown Sugar and Butter.

The "Yay! I'm a fan" is STRICTLY for the hickory burger. I'm so disappointed the name of the place is "The Apple Pan" since the apple pie was mediocre at best . But this old school vibe is so cool! When you walk in it's a counter service only. You look around and notice the old school register. Wow! It still works. Your sodas are served in these cone paper cups. The place is pretty straight forward with their menu. The menu is limited but the Hickory burger was yummers! The meat is not frozen which I think gives you a really fresh flavor to your burger. Your condiments even come with old school style service. They actually pour the ketchup for you. I absolutely love the vibe and ambiance, it's a cool blast from the past. We had 2 burgers, 2 fries, 2 sodas, 2 pies and It was 40 bucks. So old school services doesn't have old school prices.

Old classic burger restaurant We sat on the table. The kitchen was in tge middle of big square table. They cook th3 burgers in front of us. We pay in old classic cashier machine The burger was average Avarage price Enjoyed the experience Recommended

Any time we head to LA from Orange County we look to see if our destination is near Apple Pan, or if we can stop there en route, and yesterday was one of those days! Arrived around 12:15, inside dining was about half full, so we grabbed stools and ordered our lunch. My hickory burger with cheese, her egg salad, and a huge side of fries we couldn't finish. Service is always good. As are the prices and the history. Too bad they don't have the metal holders with the paper cone shaped cups in them for drinks anymore

Not sure who to blame first, the Apple Pan or their RUDE customers. Tried to eat lunch there today. If you are unfamiliar with the Apple Pan, they only have a "U" shaped counter with maybe 24 stools. No tables, booths, etc. We showed up with about 8 people standing against the front wall. Sign on the wall says "1st come, 1st served". OK, I get it - we'll wait. After a few minutes a couple left and the couple standing at the left end of the wall took their place. I though, "Ok, that the system." Soon afterwards another couple arrived and took their place to the other side of us. Next, a lady comes in and takes a place on the other side of those people. About 5 minutes passed before anyone else finished their lunch. When the next two seats were vacated, this "lady", who came in well after we did, just sauntered over right passed us and the others waiting, and sat her ass down. I could not believe it! Why does the Apple Pan not have a process to manage this so that stupid rude people aren't allowed to act that way?! By the way, Marie's Italian one block down was very good!

It doesn't get more classic. This diner-style restaurant does its burgers, fries and drinks the same way as is has vor dozends of years. The burgergs are perfectly tender, in a basic bun with some classic BBQ sauce. It's amazing how "uncool" everything is, and still you feel welcome all the time, get to enjoy great food and pay little.

Apple pan has been here forever. Good burgers cooked as you wait. Better fries. Have never tried the pie. Burgers served in wrapper. It's not the best burger but this burger in that environment takes it to above average. Drinks served in a can with a cone paper cup. Fries on a container with catsup squirted for you on a different plate. Pleasant staff that have worked there for decades. Parking is a challenge but meters all over. Be prepared to wait if it's close to noon---worth the wait. If you haven't tried this burger...Try it! This burger in that environment takes it to above average.

This is a popular spot for locals and where nostalgic eaters come to dine. I ordered the steak burger with added cheese, regular fries, and a slice of banana cream pie. It was busy when I arrived and after receiving my order I went to eat at the rear large open patio, no indoor dining at the moment due to the C19 pandemic. The burger is okay and has more of a salad taste than a burger taste. The fries are large and standard greasy spoon fare. The pie was good and flavorful but nothing over the top.

I am used to visit this restaurant once a week and quality of service and food is always super. I'm all about their pies, the best is the banana cream pie, burgers are very good as well!

Been coming to this place for years. No longer a hidden gem but still a gem. A bit pricy on the burgers but the banana cream pie might just be the best your ever have.

My wife and I are big fans of old LA school dining establishments for the atmosphere as long as the food is good too. We’ve been trying to get to the AP for a long time but for whatever reason, it just didn’t work out as it’s on the other side of LA. We finally got to visit yesterday. Recap: It’s small dining room with a luncheonette counter. Luckily, we were able to get two seats as soon as we walked in. This definitely is old school. Only two burger options, sandwiches, fries and pie. We ordered one each of the two burger with me having the Hickory burger and my wife the regular. Both with cheese. We also had an order of fries and shared a slice of apple pie. Verdict: - We loves the old school atmosphere. Soda came in a can but served in a paper cone with aluminum holder. Took me back to Woolworths (for those old enough to remember, if you aren’t old enough, google it). Waiters wear white shirts and white paper caps. Registers are the old analog, stick the receipt in so they get stamped. Classic. Close your eyes and it’s like the 1950’s. - Cheeseburger: Honestly, I have to admit that I had a low level of expectation even knowing that this is a mecca for burgers. I was skeptical of how good this could be. Well, I was shocked how good it was. It came out wrapped half in paper, ala In-n-Out style. No plates. Very simple - regular bun, lettuce, tillamook cheddar, mayo and the hickory sauce was subtle. The meat was perfect. Crispy on the edges but super juicy. The cheese was perfectly melted and the lettuce perfectly crunchy and fresh. My wife loved hers as well and the relics sauce was very tasty. Both sauces allowed for the meat, cheese and lettuce to standout. Has to be in my top 5 list! I’m convince the flavor comes from decades old flavoring from the grill and high quality ingredients. 10/10 - Fries: perfectly crispy and potatoey. I’m glad to ask for well done. I wish we ordered individual portions. 9/10 Pie: Crust was definitely hand made. Thin, and right texture. Apple filling good, but a little loose. 7.5/10 filling. 8/10 crust The sandwiches looked really good too, especially the ham sandwich. We definitely will be back with my children next time as I want them to experience this classic joint. They showed why they’ve been open so long and why there is always a wait. Tried and true. I hope they will never go out of business.

We were told that the lines are long but went early enough to be able to get a seat at the counter immediately. Ordered the cheese burger and fries. It was served faster than the time it took to order. Burger and fries were cooked right in front of you. Excellent burger. Love that they don't salt the fries. Definitely worth the wait when there is one.

I saw this on TV from a show with Emeril Lagasse on it. He highly recommend it. Apple Pan is a retro burger joint, small, tasty burgers, yummy apple pies but after all that I paid over $21 including tips. For a burger, coke and a apple pie ala mode I think it was too pricey. Yes, it has a nice atmosphere and decor reminds you the yesterdays of old but next I will take that $21 and go spend it at a nice Thai restaurant.

If you're lucky enough to get a seat at the counter, chances are, you'll have one of the best burgers (or one of the few sandwiches they offer) you ever had. It's a no frills place that just serves good, old fashioned food. And don't forget to have a piece of pie!

We picked up two Banana Cream Pies for a family dinner and since it is my Uncle's favorite he wanted that instead of birthday cake. OMG these beauties were at least half way full up to the top of bananas, the perfect amount of whipped creme topping and even the little kids gobbled them up!!

Forget the good apple pie, this is a place to come for a Hickory Burger and fries, which i do regularly.Sit down at the old school counter and just enjoy a special burger and awesome fries which people have been doing for over 60 years.

If your tired of the same old burger joint you have to try out this LA staple. Its completely not what you would expect for a burger place on the west side or anywhere else in LA these days...There's a sense of nostalgia and community that you just don't get anymore due to its old time charm and cozy seating arrangement, its so unpretentious I love it. Go for the Hickory Burger with cheese, fries, and a coke...and a slice of banana cream pie...the menu is limited and on weekends you may have a wait a few minutes to get a seat. Know what you want asap, because customer service isn't that great but its speedy, its part of its overall charm so don't feel slighted just go with the flow because everyone else gets it and don't be the one snob who doesnt..You won't be disappointed by the food, parking sucks, bring CASH and don't forget to tip.

Apple Pan was rated as one of the nations best burgers in the recent past. I wholeheartedly agree. Order the burgers as on the menu and you will not be disappointed. Fries were perfect, crispy but not overdone. Don't forget the apple pie a la mode for dessert if you have room!

We ventured here on our last night in LA because I found the place on a list of places to eat pecan pie. You walk in and instantly step back in time a few decades as you are met with a large u-shaped table surrounding the kitchen and serving area. The ancient cash registers (and yes this place is cash only) are vivid reminders of the years of history etched into this awesome little spot. The burgers and fries were both delicious and plentiful and the pies were out of this world. The menu is super simplistic but each item is served with the love of a business that has been operated by the same family for 70 years. This is a quintessential diner experience and one to put on your LA foodie bucket list.

Very fun to enjoy a steak burger at this LA classic burger counter. A throw back in time. Not many of these places left. While not a great burger, it more than satisfies.

Okay, so if you're here reading this review, you already know. This is by far the best burger in the entire world. There's no better. The fries? Also amazing. Oh yeah, and the pie ain't too bad either.

Have been going to the Apple Pan since 1970, always went with friends during high school and then college, and it was a tradition, went a couple of times a week, ordered a couple of tasty hickory burgers and topped it off with the famous apple pie (without ice cream, but if you like a la mode, go for it). All counter seating and the guys that wait on you have been working here forever, and their service and style is an art form, just awesome to watch. You often have to wait for a seat, so just stand behind some people who look like they are close to finishing. Totally worth the wait. Went with my wife a few weeks ago, and she loves it too, sat next to other people who've been coming for 20 years, so not that long...jajaja. They love it. How could you not?

This is a family-run concern that has kept the 1940's feeling in decor, food and old time friendly service. It's worth a visit if only for the place itself but the pies are the real star. You may have to wait to find a place to sit but that's part of the charm.

I called to ask if there were tables as I was planning on bringing my 10 month old baby. The two men I spoke to pretended not to understand the question "do you have tables or just counter seating?". They proceeded to tell me I could not make reservations then asked me for my order, then placed the phone on the counter and took other orders.Clearly they speak English but continued for 10 minutes to keep me on hold. Institution or not a business needs to act professionally.

My husband and I ate here on a recent trip to L.A. I had the steak burger and he had the hickory burger and fries. The burgers were good and made to order. The fried were nice and crispy. I felt it was a bit expensive for what you get, but I guess you are paying for the old time experience. It is counter only seating, which I wasn't expecting. The seating is very limited so this is a good place to grab a quick bite. You basically just have to wait until a seat opens up to sit down. It is cash only as well. Parking was limited too, but we ended up parking in the Westfield Plaza parking garage right across the street, the first 3 hours of parking are free.

We tried Apple Pan based off recommendations for their burgers and it was worth it. If your in Westwood head to Pico and try one. The only warning is the restaurant is small and only has counter seating. We tried the steak burger and hickory burger and both were great. We were served incredibly fast with excellent service The server gave us a wetnap wipe to clean up. We would go back.

The Apple Pan is my favorite place to eat in LA--the simplicity of it and excellence of the never-changing menu makes it a welcome change from trendy LA eateries. Since the 1920's this place has served wonderful burgers and sandwiches with their famous apple pie to a never-ending line of happy customers. It's first come first serve and often you wait behind someone eating at one of the bar stools until they finish and you can take their seat. I highly recommend the Hickory Cheeseburger, the coffee and the pie, and you will imagine Humphrey Bogart might walk in at any moment.

One of the best burgers I ever had and also one of the greatest apple pies! The only thing is they don't accept cards. Ok, it's vintage but unnecessary. I love classic/traditional places and this is certainly one of those. Be aware of places to seat. Only bar stools, I've been there with wife and two kids and was not easy to get places for four together.

We just love Apple Pan. This place has been around for years. It is small, with great counter seating. You can eat there or get the food to go. They make the best hamburgers on the West Side of Los Angeles. It is family owned and the service is just the best. Some of the waiters have been there for years. They make pies that will make you blow your diet without care. Their fries are fresh and just super good. Every burger is made there while you wait and they are so good. You have to go to the Apple Pan. It is a must stop for anyone visiting LA.

Only counter seats but food was good and staff was friendly. I had a hickory burger and water. No complaints here.

This is a great restaurant with incredible burgers and pie. The burger is the best I have ever had. The banana cream pie is also the best I ever had!

Every neighborhood has a burger place like this. As I'm "Coming From TO (Toronto)", it has to be Johnny's Burgers - at least for us east end boys. In this part of LA, it's clearly the Apple Pan. This is a pretty straight up diner style, counter service, kinda place. Minimal menu and with quick service that comes with a practiced edge to it. Minimal words - just get it done. And it's all pretty good. I really enjoyed the hickory burger and lovely bride said that she enjoyed the cheese sandwich. The fries were a little under done but a comment about that and they disappeared to come back a few minutes later a nice golden brown. The drink service seems to be their thing. A metal cup with a paper liner filled with ice. Never seen it before. Not sure that I get it. Maybe it minimizes dishes for them. The apple pie looked good but we didn't got for it. A tad expensive for what it was.

Funky atmosphere and just love the whole grungy diner feel. You order, get your fries asap, and then your burger gets there. This is where the problem was. I remember a much better burger. I had not been in years but craved a burger. The only burger, the Hickory burger, was smothered in the sauce, more like a sauce sandwich with meat. I also ordered cheese on it. The first bite had cheese and then nothing. As it turns out, the rest of the cheese had melted right off the burger and ended up in a pile at the bottom of the wrapping. All very disappointing. Also, parking is spotty in back when busy and street parking can be tough. Geographically. location is good though.

I’ve been wanting to experience The Apple Pan for a while and have made numerous attempts. The restaurant only has one U shaped diner-counter seating, so the first time I came with my baby before I knew that, it wasn’t an option for us. Now a toddler, I tried again but couldn’t find seating. But we ordered take out! The burger was very good as was the pie. The apple relish on the burger is what makes it unique. I struggled with whether to give this place 3 or 4 stars. I LOVE the vintage sign and retro feel of this place, but I can never find a seat after multiple attempts. They should put some corner tables in. So what good is a place I can’t get into? While very tasty, the food wasn’t enough to push it up to a 4. I’d try again in the future.

Decent hamburgers. A lot of hype beat little place and good but not great hamburgers. I love in n out burgers so very hard to beat. Is an la institution though so check out for yourself. Kinda reminds me of Johnny Rockets chain. Really good fries also

Super simple, very cool experience. You basically seat yourself on the honor system, order, eat, pay and leave... Burger was great, as was cream soda. Highly recommended!

I must admit I have dined at Apple Pan many times so far; however I think I end up eating there more for the atmosphere that is so wonderfully 50's than for the food: the customers all sitting around the counter, the old cash registers, the waiters in their uniforms... I feel like I am in an episode of "Happy Days" every time I go there. To tell the truth, though the food is not that great. Not only is the number of options very limited (which can be a plus sometimes), but the quality of the food served leaves me with a sense of dissatisfaction. The french fries, for example: they are usually overcooked and too oily. I like my french fries golden yellow, not yellow-brownish! Things don't improve when we consider the burgers. The bun for example always tends to crumble while you are biting it and that is no good because it makes me think it is not that fresh. The beef patties they use are too thin and the sandwich looks big only because they put in it a huge amount of lettuce (which to me it seems not really fair). The place is famous for its apple pies (hence its name, I suppose), but unfortunately I have never tried them. The only time I asked for a (too pricy) slice of apple pie, they said they didn't have any because they ran out of apples... One last note: there are not so many seats, so it is not a place where you want to go with many friends altogether (and yes, you must be patient because the line can be quite long).

I spent my childhood through my twenties as almost a fixture at the Apple Pan. I knew all of the waiters by name and they taught me about burgers and pies. The Pan was and still is crowded during lunch and dinner time. It's counter only and seating was done on the honour system with the first to arrive was the first to be seated no matter where one stood. I can't vouch for that anymore in this day and age. I went this last April to find that the burgers and fries were as good as they ever were and the good sized pieces of apple pie were as delicious as ever. I will return to this place of my childhood for the good food and the wonderful memories.

The Apple Pan is an institution! It is classic LA...unchanged after decades and serves up one of the best burgers I have tasted anywhere, ever. All seats are bar style, around a U-shaped counter with the "kitchen" (grill) in the center. You wait your turn to take a seat, and there is limited seating (about 30 or fewer seats in the entire place). Apple Pan is a 5 star experience - but know in advance it is very simple...a short menu that delivers the best of the very few things it offers. It is ideal for an amazing lunch complete with awesome burger and decadent pie. The menu is severely limited (two kinds of burgers, a couple sandwiches, awesome french fries, and great pies). These items are their specialty and they deliver on them to perfection. You owe it to yourself to try the Hickoryburger...it is AWESOME! The burgers are served on fresh buns, with mayo, a unique hickory flavor, tons of pickles and sauce, and a perfectly fresh, crisp, thick stack of lettuce. The fries are crispy and hot, and the service is great (as in, efficient and anticipating your every need). Outstanding burgers...worthy of 5 Stars! Highly recommend!

The Apple Pan is famous for having the same owner and management since 1947. They pride themselves for their simple foods made to perfection using the highest quality ingredients and I couldn't agree MORE! They say, if it ain't broke, don't fix it and this place has got the right recipe for food, service, and atmosphere locked down! I visited here for the first time today. I went solo for an afternoon lunch trip. It felt very much like stepping back in time.I entered into the small space with bar stools and counters surrounding the small kitchen. Every seat was filled and people waited around the edge of the room for a stool and counter space to come available. The server and cooks dressed in white with white paper hats. They use an old fashioned cash register. All of this was very much like a diner from another time, and I loved it! There was a friendly and super efficient gentlemen who took orders, distributed food and drinks, and also handled the CASH ONLY payments. He was a wonder to observe, especially when preparing the drinks in old fashioned cone paper cups and metal holders. The menu is simple, just a few burger and sandwich options, French fries, pies made in house, and soft drinks. I tried the hickory burger and fries. For me the taste had a sort of nostalgia reminding me of my Godmother's famous homemade burgers. So, it was not only delicious but also had a familiar and homey flavor. The fries were superb as well! Cooked crispy and served hot in a paper plate with a separate paper plate for your ketchup. Food came quickly, I savored EVERY bite, and enjoyed it VERY MUCH! If in LA area, visit this place and confine to support a long-standing locally owned business. Don't forget your appetite and your cash, they DO NOT take credit cards.

This was such a fun food experience. We got there before opening and waited patiently. An older couple also turned up to wait the 5-10 minutes. We ended up sitting next to them and they had come here back in the 50's when they lived in LA. They confirmed it hadn't changed much in all that time. Got talking to our server (how professional are they all!?!) and he'd been working there since 1979! Nearly all of my lifetime. It was a real pleasure to eat here, and the food was delicious. I went with a healthier option of a ham sandwich (I'd read that they bake the ham themselves) and it was delicious - but huge. I took half of it home. Partner had a burger and we both had fries; and despite me not finishing my sandwich we shared a piece of banana cream pie. The metal cups and cones that you get your drinks in are fun, and the whole experience is just ... joyful!

So I ❤️ burgers. I consider myself an expert. I heard about this place from a foodie show. It’s been around for over 40 years. It’s CASH ONLY so be aware. And it’s worth every penny and more! The seating is counter service only so if there’s more than one of you, it might take you a few long minutes to find a seat together. I was solo and I waited a good 10 min before I nabbed a seat. Most of the guys working the counter have been there since it opened! I think that says tons about the owners. :) they move fast there so you won’t wait long for your food once you order. The food. OMG, the burger is HEAVENLY! Juicy, great flavor, savory and it stands up! Lol trust me it’s worth every dollar (and they are not pricey) and minute you spend there!

Apple Pan is an important part of the West Side as a long-time family run business. The new owner promises to keep it that way and the locals will confirm if it the promise is good. Go now before time changes anything about the original process used with the hamburgers, fries and excellent pies. They don't bat an eye if you ask for cheddar cheese on your apple pie either. Yum.

Apple Pan is My all time favorite Classic Retro Prime Burger Diner place . Been around Since the 1940’s . Homemade Pies that are soooo satisfying . Also a celebrity hang out for over 40yrs . Counter only seating that’s fun to watch longtime Waiters and Cooks serve up your food , and serve you ketchup On a plate next to your yummy crispy fries . Also the best Tuna Salad Sandwich I ever had . Coffee is great and served with real homemade cream . To die for is Saturday Only Cherry Cream Custard Pie! One of Los Angeles’s classic Must Eat diners On The West Side on Pico across the street From the Westside Pavilion Tom

We called into Apple Pan on the recommendation of friends we were staying with in the Culver City. What a cool set up I've not been into a place like this which I guess is a very traditional style setting. Although we were only ordering food to go the place had a nice feel to it and service was swift with helpful staff. Burgers were spot on as were the fries which were plentiful (1 portion would've been enough) The apple pie was great too. Unfortunately I'd parked in a permit zone along the road (not intentionally) and even though I returned to the car minutes after ordering leaving my partner to pick up our food the parking snipers had nabbed me. Gutted is an understatement! Anyways the food made up for it......I'll be sure to take more care if I return when I'm back in LA

Been going here for decades. The place is always packed but worth the wait. It's quite the scene to watch the counter guys and the cooks crank out the food. Service is attentive and matter of fact. Burgers of course are amazing but I crave their white meat Tuna sandwich along with well done fries, olives and sweet pickles. To die for! All sorts of pies for dessert and ala mode is the only way to go. They don't serve tomatoes FYI on any sandwich and it's a cash only place. No credit cards. It's pricey but hey....it's Apple Pan, a Los Angeles destination.

I mean the burgers were OK, but with the hype I got before I went, I was expecting the world. I'd definitely opt for In'n'out instead.

The Apple Pan hasn't changed at all for 30 years except that the energetic and intense servers I still recognize have a little more grey hair. I don't understand the lounge" zealots and the "in and..." Zealots and all the other nuvo-gourmet burger lovers when you will find the absolute best burger in Los Angeles, every single time at Apple Pan. Fresh generous portion of meat perfectly cooked and hot topped with a mound of crisp cool iceberg lettuce and your choice of trimmings. The Hickory Burger, to me, is to die for. Fresh tasty fries that your server will smother with ketchup right in front of you if you wish. Melts and other options available but it's all about the burger, I think. And the Apple pie a la mode. Don't miss that either. Only counter dining is available. There are no tables. And there's barely enough room to stand and wait for a counter space. But that's part of the fun. And there is an etiquette that only catches newbies off guard and can anger regulars: there's no name taking and no numbers. You are expected to look around all three sides of the U-shaped counter to see who is already standing and waiting for a spot. Those who come in after you are expected to do the same with you. Even if a spot opens up on the opposite side of the room and there's somebody waiting right behind it, they are supposed to let you walk over and take that seat if they came in after you did. The servers don't keep track and they don't arbitrate arguments. The assumption is you will be honest and kind. That can lead to arguments. In fact I'm surprised there aren't more. It's almost a religion that they continue this potentially free for all system but you come to like it because it's unique. It's nice to educate newcomers instead of yelling at them, but there have been times where I've just backed down and let someone sit before I do even though I came in first because it's not worth the fight. You can bypass the whole process, of course, by ordering to go. The cooks and servers are multi/tasking machines, known for their lightning speed movements (whether pouring two sodas at once or serving up a slice of pie while simultaneously dousing fries with ketchup. And watching the cooks is like poetry in efficiency. It's like a show from every seat since the cooking is done in the middle of that u-shaped counter. They serve until 11pm or midnight (late nights are Friday and Saturday) now depending on the day -- much longer hours than they used to have years ago, and are closed on Mondays.... Which brings a big smile to my face because it seemed I always used to show up on Sunday's back in the day when they used to be closed on Sunday's. There's nothing more disappointing than anticipating an Apple Pan hickory burger and then finding they're closed. Try one and you'll see why!! It's a Los Angeles treasure. Don't miss it!

Went there with my kids for a late dinner. The place was almost full I really liked the retrostyle of the place and the burgers were really good with crisp salad.

This is one of the best known restaurants in LA-- at least to locals. It's original from 1947... little has changed except the prices-- which are still fair. U-shaped counter, built-in barstools, burgers served wrapped in paper, fries on small paper plates, and the same guys behind the counter for 30-40 years! It is my favorite burger place on the planet. Fresh, ground there... the hickory cheeseburger is my #1, but the tuna salad is also really good. Fries are excellent and you can get them well-done if you like. I'm from Louisiana and we have legendary pies there, so I've never been impressed with any pies in California, but the apple pie there is pretty good (pumpkin too when in season.) But most folks love their pies, especially banana cream... so who am I to judge?! There will be a wait on weekends and most weeknights (except winter) so be prepared to hang out for 10-15 minutes for when it's your turn. (It's the honor system... you have to pay attention to who was there before you.) I used to live on the west side and went there often (weekly)... now it's only a few times per year. But I make sure that anytime I'm in the vicinity I find a way to be hungry!

I pulled out my Los Angeles file of articles and an old issue of Lucky Peach before I left. The Apple Pan showed up several times. Plus People magazine named it's banana cream pie the best in California. I picked up my rental car in Burbank and made a bee line to this LA institution. There are a few parking spaces and I was able to snag one at 2:00 p.m. It is cash only, but if you arrive with only a few bucks in your pocket like I did, you can walk across the street to the ATM. Even after the lunch hour, there were only a few open seats and as soon as people got up, more people walked in. The seats are all along a U-shaped counter surrounding a grill and kitchen. The long-time staff are attentive and friendly, but no time to stand around chatting as it is very busy. No worries, the people around me were friendly and willing to answer questions about the menu. Both people on either side of me were regulars. The steak burger and fries were yummy, but I saved room for my focus: pie! And I am so glad I did.

If I'm driving by Apple Pan, and by driving by I mean heading North or South on the 5 or 405 at the right time of day to avoid traffic, then I'll go the extra few miles to get a great burger & piece of pie. Parking can definitely be an issue with the location, so plan on circling the block a few times if you don't manage to get one of the few spaces available. If you're a burger lover, Apple Pan is a must on the list of the best there is.

This place is an experience. I’ve never been to any restaurant just as it opened and this was totally unintentional. The service was nice but I felt rushed the whole time I was there. Disappointingly, the burger was just ok. I had my first taste of apple pie and it didn’t disappoint.

We was there yesterday, and the burguer, fries and apple pie was...delicious!!! And furthermore the waiters were so kind... If I go again to Los Angeles I will go again!!

Walking distance from Westside Pavillion. Open seating, not worth the apple pie, liked burger/fries.

We stopped off here on our way back to LA from Laguna Beach on a Saturday lunchtime. It is a few minted away from the 405 / 10 junction with a small parking lot. We read about its excellent burgers on goop (Gwyneth Paltrow's blog). It's a very simple c-shaped diner style bar with the kitchen at its center, within a, well it's a shack really. We were lucky and only had to queue for a few minutes but I guess that it sometimes gets murderously full of development executives from Fox up the street, all trying to figure out exactly what "development" is. I have attached the menu to the review. $50 for two burgers, a sandwich and a slice of pie seems ok for a popular place. You decide.

I don't understand what the big hype is here. It tastes like a an average burger. With lots of ketchup on it. I'd rather go elsewhere to get a better burger. Just a simple burger I guess. Not what you would call a gourmet burger. Parking here sucks. The parking behind the restaurant is very limited and fills up quick. Cash only.

As many others have written, this is one of the iconic hamburger stands in all of Los Angeles. Just be prepared to wait behind someone for them to finish. Don't leave without trying the apple pie.

Being a European, I’m all for anything vintage American food. This place is seemingly exist since the dawn of time. The menu isn’t too complicated, the few items probably hasn’t changed for decades. The Hickory Burger and fries were awesome, but the APPLE PIE... I’m glad I bought two, since one was clearly not enough. Totally recommended, next time I’ll try the cream pie too...

This small, retro burger joint is a neighborhood stalwart. Push through the swinging screen doors and wait politely for a stool to become vacated. Everyone sits at the counter facing the middle of the diner, where the short-order cooks do their thing with aplomb. The menu is short and simple, but the thin burgers are of good quality (my pick: the hickory burger, smothered in tangy hickory sauce), the fries are very hot and not too greasy, and the prices are reasonable for a sit-down meal (come prepared—it’s cash only).

Old school doesn't have to be a bad thing but in this case they have let it go to their head - too cool for school. The counter is a novelty in this day and age and so is the cash only policy. However what they have forgotten about is the customer. What once made this a can't miss is now an always miss. Forget about hello, let's just start with some simple communication that goes beyond a grunt and groan. The service is awful, the place is filthy and that's been standard for some time now; but when you aren't able to duplicate the great burger you once served there's nothing left. It would be great if they could keep the recipe and lose the filth and attitude, until that happens there's far too many places in LA to get a really great burger.

This is a great old school burger joint! The food is great and the service is beyond attentive! The venue is somewhat small given the design specs of 1946, but that just adds to the charm in my opinion. For those on an exploratory travel plan this is definitely a stop for you!

Sitting at the counter- that's all there is - and looking out the window, you almost expect to see an old street car role by. The Apple Pan is frozen in time in the most wonderful way. A Los Angeles institution for over 50 years, who knows why it took me all of them to finally take the time to go there for lunch. I having been missing out - the steak burger was delicious with a secret sauce much more complex than the secret sauces touted by others. The fries were crisp and creamy. The banana cream pie full of fruit not just cream. The prices are a throwback and the cost of a whole pie a real deal. Perhaps the most striking part was the gentleman who took care of us - a gem who has been there so long he deserves a star named after him. Bring cash as they hold to the days before credit cards were invented - as they should.

Amazing burgers and tuna melt! The pies were next level and Rowan was doing the most she was so patient with our ordering and answering questions. Best customer service. Thanks so much from the New Zealanders!

After seeing this diner on many shows, my wife and I decided to try it while we were in LA. She got the steakburger and I got the hickory. After we were done we both agreed we have had many better burgers. While it's not bad at all, ingredients are fresh and made right in front of you. I was expecting more since all the hype. If you want to try for yourself, go early. Place gets very busy.

We visited after watching this restaurant highlighted on a food network show. It was overpriced and underwhelming. The place was busy and we felt rushed.

Typical american restaurant counter type. Very simple menu (hamburgers and pies) It seems that this place has been there forever, people come and go waiting for a seat to be free. Hamburgers are good, pies are excellent. You do not come here for a gourmet experience but for an authentic location with some past and spirit.

What can you say about a institution. Apple pan has been doing it for years, No frills just good food at a good price. Sit at the counter & enjoy. The burgers are great the tuna is great. Fries are a must

Stopped here for lunch by myself on a recommendation. I normally am not comfortable dining alone but in this place I didn't mind. I went for the hickory cheeseburger which was very good, and very filling. The fries looked great but I abstained, but I did have a Dr. Pepper which I haven't had in years- love the cup holder they have. This isn't the place for diet food! I really wanted to try a piece of pie but I was so stuffed I passed. Quick service, it's obvious the guys have worked here for years and know what they're doing.

This is an old-fashioned diner that specializes in burgers. I love them. They may not make the "best" burgers in L.A. (that's a waste of time argument if there ever was one) but they make consistently delicious ones.

This classic little diner serves up classic food. The Burgers are very good but the pies are the real deal. Drinks are served in Dixie cups and the servers add a whole nother experience. Fun place, worth checking out.

Deep pockets for overpriced burger and pie. Twp people burgers , fries , drinks piece of pie $ 40 plus tip nothing special Not worth wait or crowd definitely LA spot for all locals

My burger was soft, wet, and flavorless. A slice of apple pie was equally wet--practically apple soup!

For many years, growing up in LA, my family and I used to go to The Apple Pan every saturday. By the time we sat down at the counter, the waiters already had our "usual" orders ready to go. After moving to NC, every LA trip we made was always capped off by a Hickory burger, a root beer, and fries with extra hickory sauce. For my siblings' and my bar mitzvahs, each of us got a framed Apple Pan menu. This is the most uniquely delicious burger joint you will ever encounter. Bun Appetit!

Hickory Burger, Apple pie, and the Tuna sandwich are always good. Apple pie is always great, and the coffee is excellent.

This is simply and seriously the best burger joint in town, I am loving this! Take out or eat in if you can, and don't forget to take home a pie 🙏

WE have been eating at the "pan" for more than 60-years. It hasn't changed at all. It serves great burgers (we prefer the hickory burger but the steak burger is also very popular. In addition, the tuna salad and egg salad sandwiches are outstanding. All their pies are equally outstanding from the apple pie to the berry pie. Just remember to obey the customs! This is a counter restaurant so you must wait (if there is one) for stools on a chosen side until one becomes available. If one opens on the opposite side the people waiting on that side get the seat.

Had been recommended by a local. What a wonderful experience from the old fashioned cash register to the bar stools to the quick service to the outstanding apple pie a la mode. A must visit.

I came here after i have seen the great reviews about the historical The Apple pan, we ordered the steak cheese burger witch was better than the hickory burger, it was not hot as expected and the favour is mild the patty was thin and i figured out the restaurant now lives on the old Héritage even the famous Apple pan pie was less than expected

Years ago I worked at the mall across the street from The Apple Pan. We used to go there at least twice a week. I was in the area today, so I decided to see if I could get a seat without waiting too long. As luck would have it, I grabbed one at the end ot the counter. FYI - All they have is counter seating (maybe 25 seats), so it can get crowded fast. I had the famous Steakburger, fries and a drink. It was very good. Plenty of fries, they even put the catsup on a plate for you.

This place has very very limited seating. It's all counter. We were lucky enough when we got there to find two seats right away. And this was on a Sunday night. Others after us had to stand around behind us and wait until a seat opened up. Service is fast and friendly. I don;t think they really want you to sit around and BS after you;e eaten. The turnaround in here is crazy. The food was very good. It's a true dive burger joint. I hear the pies are pretty impressive but I just didn't have room. Some parking out back but not a lot. Worth a visit.

Went in search of Apple Pan on the strength of Frommer's and Fodor's. Quaint setting with bar seats around a horseshoe shaped counter. I don't really care for sweet sauce burgers so have taken the rating down by a notch. My friend who did not mind it thought her burger was good. However we did have both the apple and pecan pies. The pecan pie was so good we ended up buying a whole pie to takeaway. :-p My friend wanted to just takeaway a slice but I said we'd get the whole pie and then our waiter smiled with me for the first and only time :-) So the pie took the rating up by one notch to the 4* average. Total bill was $55 including tips and the $20 takeaway pie.

We've live in the area for 30 years & eat at this casual neighborhood gem at least 2-3 times a month. BEST hamburgers, Tuna and Egg salad sandwiches and delicious French Fries. It's been in the same delicious location since 1947 and in the last few years, it was purchased by a new owner. Thankfully, they've maintained the same delicious quality food and even adding Pecan pie to their dessert menu. My favorite desserts are Chocolate & Banana Cream pies. (not a fan of apple pie.) Haven't tried their Pecan Pie yet. It's normally crowded, best to go there a little early. They've created a nice patio back of restaurant (formerly their parking lot) or you can eat inside at the counter, if seats are available. We have many friends and family that have moved out of California. When visiting LA, the first place they "need" to eat is Apple Pan.

After spending the day walking around the nearby Getty Center, this really hit the spot. The hickory burgers and fries are excellent. The pie is very good too. It's all over-priced but I will definitely return when in the area to try another item on the menu.

Quick fast service and simple food. Giving you a fun experience as you sit at the counter and enjoy your meal

Since 1950 we would go to the Apple Pan on a weekend many times. I grew up at this place! The best burgers in town. Same decor, some of the original staff !! Everything is made on the spot. Pies are apple, banana cream and the list goes on. Nestled between the big business buildings you will find food from heaven. Round barstools and counter only, best to order pick up. Really busy all day.

Saw Matthew Perry there so It must be a good place. The hamburger was above average as well as the service. It's been here for a long time in LA

This classic spot reminded me of the LA Farmers Market -I go for the history not so much for the food. I loved this old burger joint-super fast service and nearly full 5 minutes after opening! My steak burger had a clove heavy ketchup sauce and the pecan pie was pretty standard. My favorite part was the old building, quick service and old fashioned paper cups like I remember from my childhood. Had better burgers and pie elsewhere but you just can’t beat visiting a spot that’s been a part of LA since the 40’s! I really recommend a visit.

I like the fact the menu is very simple and the service is great but here we again with people claiming our burgers are the best. We had burgers and fries. Nothing special. Is it better than In and Out...I say yes! It is better than Counter I say almost! Is it better than other places like Five Guys and Fat Burger. I would rate it better than Fat Burger but comparable to Five Guys but with a little style. It is worth a try for something different but note this place is very busy and you have to be quick to get a seat. I was impressed but I would not run to this place. We did try the Pecan Pie with Ice Cream it was awesome and seeing the Pies coming out of the oven was also cool.

Apple Pan is a throw back to another era. Take a seat at the counter and it might be fifty years ago. The burgers are good, prefer the hickory burger myself. The french fries are excellent and a large portion is standard. Served by a friendly team of guys who stay on top of everything. A big city like LA is bound to have plenty of cool joints, and this one is a great place to start.

Really tasty burgers. The place is different in a good way. It really worth a try. I really wanna try it again. Good place.

Ok this place is seriosly a hidden secret known only to the locals. Best burger and pie spot to have ever existed. Get the Hickory burger and apple pie and u will not be dissapointed. Restaurant has a cool vibe as its a wrap around counter seating only. Service is always fast and servers are exceptional.

We're from the East coast and have to visit LA for my wife's doctor at Cedars Sinai. Every time we come out we have to visit the Apple Pan. Nothing fancy but incredible hickory burger and fries. All the pies I've had were equally delicious, especially the Banana cream. The guys behind the counter are always nice but on the ball.

We visited The Apple Pan opened in 1947, it is one of the oldest diner places in Los Angeles, for family lunch and the experience was very pleasant. The place maintains that classic diner style, with a U-shaped bar, simple atmosphere and a retro air that makes it unique. We tried two of its more traditional options: the original 1929 Steakburger and the Ham & Cheese sandwich. I highlight the steakburger arrived juicy, well seasoned and with that characteristic smoky flavor of the griddle, typical of the old style of the place. The service was quick and friendly, and everything flowed smoothly, ideal for an informal family lunch. The Apple Pan is a classic Angeleno offering simple, quality food in a retro atmosphere full of charm. A perfect place for a quick family meal with traditional flavor. Quality forever!!!

Following a Dodger game and a cocktail this appeared out of thin air as a vouched for and viable option. We all had steak burgers , fries and waters. Despite the late hour it was packed but we secured seats at the counter immediately. The food came quickly and it was fresh and quite good. The fries were just “ok” but the burger was solid in a Shake Shack style. Had I waited, I might have been disappointed but as it was, it was worth it and today I can face my early flight with the life saving grease tucked away.

The Apple Pan is an authentic 1947 diner serving burgers, fries, and pie. You eat at a large U-shaped counter and wait for an opening to sit down. I had the Hickory Burger and it was excellent. I shared my fries with my wife and then portion was plenty. We shared a piece of apple pie, which was tasty. It was a hard choice between that or the cream pie. We were served by someone who looked to be in his 70's, but he was more efficient and animated as someone in his 20's. In the age of chain restaurants, the Apple Pan is a treat. Please note, because of the limited seating, you may have to wait patiently while standing until you get a seat. And this is the type of restaurant where you sit down, order, get your food, eat and pay - don't procrastinate because customers are waiting.

Loved this genuine place, and was more than happy with the loovely hickory burger and the fries, but also the deco and around the counter arrangement. The banoffee pie was not bad either! The men working there is another reason for going, such cool guys. Actually had to come back for a second burger before leaving LA.

We went to Apple Pan because of its history and because so many lists have it among the best burgers in Los Angeles. I have to say I found it really ordinary. And far too expensive. But you only know if you try. The place and staff, though, really great.

Apple Pan has been at this location since 1947, and not much has changed in all those year. Clearly they're doing something right! The steakburger is their signature dish, and it's fantastic. Everything is fresh, and it's served wrapped up in a tight paper package like a gift from the kitchen. Fries were perfect: pipping hot & great flavor. Service is lightning fast. In fact, don't expect to linger over the last few bites of your meal. The waiters know how to keep the seats rotating for the next wave of customers. One caveat: there is only counter seating, and it's a big horseshoe. If you come with a big group or during the middle of a busy time, seating will be difficult.

I’m Los Angeles, for a family run hamburger joint to survive for 70 years they have to be exceptional. The Apple Pan is an institution and transports one back in time. They have two types of burger, the Hickory & Steak, each with their unique fresh sauce. You can order double patties with extra pickles or cheese but I would suggest try the original one first. The bun is spongy, but not to sweet. The lettuce & pickles very fresh, the Pattie is thin and reminiscent of a burger as it was intended to be. They make fresh pies on site, the apple , banana cream and pecan being the most popular. Seasonal pies also make appearances on the menu every so often. If you are in Los Angeles, you must visit the Apple Pan apart from the food, for the experience of going back in time.

We met friends and went early for the great experience of the Apple Pan. Hickory burger almost as good as we remembered, and apple pie and chocolate pudding met our cravings. Parking was easily available by going early. Can't say traffic was anywhere near what we remembered. Worse than ever, coming from Westwood.

This place tries to create a nostalgic atmosphere that plainly lets them get away with bad service, mediocre food, and crazy prices. This is a perfect example of a place where people show up and let themselves get taken advantage of because they want to feel special about going to a place that is unique. Read any review, they all say "old style" or "it's like that because they've been that way for a while". So stupid. Cash only, you get rushed, and a slice of pie is like $5. Burger was meh, pie was decent. An In n Out double double is a third of the price. Think about it.

After hearing for so long from so many sources that this is the finest hamburger in the city, I found myself in the neighborhood yesterday at the right time and decided to stop for lunch. Parking is difficult, but a lot of folks say it's ok and it's worth it. Lunch counter and cash only gives you an old time feel. The burger was good, they gave me a diet coke in one of those old fashioned paper cups with a metal holder, so if you don't like the taste of paper, just drink it out of the can. It was good and quick, I guess I got lucky because I didn't have to wait, but I have to say that a $7.95 burger at this place isn't any better than the one that costs a lot less at In N Out

Classic burger stand kind of place. No fancy waitress and table cloths. Had a slice of pie after my burger and left on cloud 9.

If you are hungry and craving burger, then Apple pan's burger is the answer. Their burger is so yummy and the beef is cooked well. I tried their barbecue burger. Delicious yet I was full I didn't order their pie.

Thanks to Huell Howser's great review we decided to try this place and we were not disappointed. Great food and quick service. Only bad part is how you get your seat. You have to stand behind people and wait for them to finish eating and then grab their seats when they leave. Wish they had a sign in to eliminate the "jockeying for position" type feeling I have when I get there. Many employees have been there forever and sometimes the stop and chat with you but they are so busy that rarely happens. Enjoy

We tried this place after a recommendation from our son. Very good old fashioned burger. I thought the prices were a bit steep for the fare but it was good. Other places are just as good at quite a bit lower cost.

It had been years (20+?) since I last sat on a stool at the always-filled-counter of this shack. Same-old same-old menu. Burgers and pie and a few others. Pricier now, but worth it. Very fast service, comfortable, even with people standing behind you awaiting an open seat. There are perhaps 20 stools, no booths or tables. Friendly, pleasant old timers serving. Smalltown in the big city. Great burgers. I'll revisit the pie (baked on the premises) later.

Certainly not the best burger in town given all the competition. Burger is good, especially with the stack of lettuce they put on it. It's also not inexpensive. I think the burgers are around $8 plus fries it becomes a $12 burger and fries. It is still a fun place to go and is deep in history.

As a foreign, I felt at home! This place is simple, but very cozy. Try the burger and the apple pie! But be sure to get there early, after 9PM you won't be able to have a piece of apple pie. I will definitely visit this place if I am in town.

Cool, orginal LA vibe. No AC, the place probably has never changed and that's what makes it great. Ham & cheese sandwich was huge. Apple pie with ice cream a must.

The Apple Pan has been virtually unchanged since it opened in 1947. Counter service ONLY, and if you are there during the lunch or dinner hours, you will have to wait. Want your burger medium rare? FORGET IT! They make the burgers the way THEY make them and that’s that! The best apple pie and ice cream anywhere. Fantastic “coffee shop” coffee with REAL cream. This place is one of a kind, and it’s my kind of place! Hey Hector, YOU are the man!

Tiny hamburger wit hickory sauce ...mostly lettuce and white bun. Uncomfortable counter, only, seating.

Worth the wait, the tables are available on a first come first serve basis. Delicious steak burgers and home made pies served at their round counter top tables. For full review and more pictures please visit the link in our profile.

We love the Apple Pan and have been going there for over 30 years now. It never changes. The food is great, the menu limited, and the service fast and super nice. Due to Covid, right now, they only have take out and delivery, but if you get a chance get the take out. It is hot and ever so good. They also have a nice selection of pies. Their Hickory Burger is the best. Have fun. Parking can be a pain, but you will find a spot. Mind the signs. There is limited parking in the back of the storefront.

Pretty fun experience eating at Apple Pan. The U shaped counter adds a diner feel to the restaurant and queueing for seats is fun with everyone confirming who is next before grabbing open seats. The food is terrific. Burgers were excellent, fries were hot and tasty. The pies topped off and excellent meal - we couldn't decide between apple and banana cream and still can't. Service is phenomenal.

A diner that has been around for many decades but the main event here is the burgers and there's little else on the menu. The joint, which only has counter seating, gets crowded so be prepared to wait but it's worth it. Are these the best burgers I've ever had? No but they are good and the hickory sauce is unique and tasty. The best reason is to come here is the authenticity. This is not a Disneyesque retro diner -- it's the real deal.

Full review and video at Cineclast dot com Oh boy you are in for a mouth treat with this segment where we go meat deep into the historic Apple Pan in Los Angeles. Old school charm, easy on the wallet, and an explosion of taste, you really cant do better for a lunch date then this joint. Rumour has it that The Apple Pan may be closing it's doors soon after over 70 years of continually serving up tasty meat pucks so get in there quick! BONUS TIPS: First off, dont shy from the hickory sauce which if you ask nice you can get a side cup for to dip your brown gold in ... but theres much much more... OFF MENU SECRETS ... like tuna melts, cheese fries, root beer floats and even lettuce wrapped hick burgers for the Keto crew.

Make sure and order the fries with cheese. Both their burgers were great, will come back to try the apple pie next time in LA.

Covid casualty. Missing their best pie by far: Boysenberry - bring it back. ASAP. Need to open counter service again. Like the outdoor seating, but inside is what made this place legend.

I was taken here by a friend who has be going here for over 40 years. I hear that it hasn't changed a bit and you wouldn't want it to. You have to wait in line for a while. Then you sit around the cooking area. The guys are friendly and funny to interact with. The hickory burger was majestic. Go and check it out

It has not changes in over 60 years. 3 side counter that maybe seats 40 to 50 folks. The soft drinks are served in a paper cone. Steak burgers are served the Hickory is the go to and the fries are great. If you you can get a parking spot then get a seat it is worth the stop. Don’t forget a piece of pie and Bring Cash
Burgers, Just Burgers
Great counterman sets the scene. The place is a throw back to the 1940's in the best way. Everything is fresh. Limited menu. Save room for dessert.Great burgers!
