A diner-style bar and restaurant with a passion for eggs

By Taylor B |

Ever since Au Cheval opened its doors in Chicago in 2012, the diner-style bar and restaurant with a passion for eggs has been a popular destination for locals and tourists from all over the world. Located at 800 West Randolph Street in the West Loop neighborhood, it built a reputation for producing an award-winning double cheeseburger. No matter what survey, no matter which food critic, Au Cheval's burger always ranks among the top five in Chicago. With or without a fried egg. Order a single (two beef patties) or a double (three beef patties) topped with Kraft cheese singles, dijon and house-made pickles. Add a fried egg or thick-cut bacon if desired. With French fries and a root beer float or a glass of lemonade. I started with a Kale Caesar salad with garlic sourdough bread crumbs, parmesan and classic Caesar dressing with chicken breast. Meanwhile, my wife was delighted with a chopped salad with bacon, egg and ranch dressing and General Jane's honey-fried chicken with chili, sesame seeds and cilantro withs hash browns. Open from 10 a.m. to 11:15 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 10 a.m. to 10:15 p.m. on Sunday, Au Cheval is a no reservations, first come, first serve operation. With a passion for eggs. And the best double cheeseburger in town.

Fantastic, absolutely fantastic

Visited whilst on a short break in Chicago with a mate. Granted, it was a Monday afternoon but the restaurant was busy. Front of house very helpful so minimal wait time. Food was awesome and surroundings, spot on. You gotta eat here!!

Well... it was good.

Oddly enough; the price of the bacon egg cheeseburger is what enticed me to try it and yet it’s the price that prevents me from trying it ever again. The burger was pretty good. Couldve used more salt, pepper and dijonaise. The end of my bacon was so tough I almost spit it out. The brioche was kind of dry. If you used an angel biscuit and put some of the sauce from the chicken on the thick cut smoked pork belly and broiled it on, you would have a big winner that was worth the high dollar. The fries were spot on, including that great garlic aioli. The salad would have been better if all the salt hadn’t of gone to the bottom. I'm being tough on you guys, but for the price, i should be. The fried chicken was really good. I would go again to try the bone marrow, fried bologna sandwich and maybe a dessert. It’s a smart call having a fairly small menu. All in all; well done.

Burger

By Alisha A |

We wanted to try this place all weekend, but couldn’t get in. So we decided to make it our last meal in Chicago and went at 10am. They will not seat you till your whole party is there. They told us there was a 5 hour wait over the weekend...insane! Although I would Never wait that long for a meal, it was good. We had the single burgers and added egg. The french fries were excellent with the garlic sauce!!! Good food, we will recommend to friends.

Very much over-hyped

By Richard B |

If you want to be able to tell your friends you waited 3-4 hours for a table or that you went to this hyped up place, this is definitely the place for you. If you want a very good burger, turn the corner and go to Shake Shack.

Hyped hubris & overpriced horse sh*t

By Dimitri D |

In the Chicago Haymarket, there choices for a hamburger; avoid culinary hubris and arrogant service served in this establishment. Cheers

Phenomenal

By ltcoates |

An amazing burger. Expect a wait but it’s worth it. Also, come hungry because this is not a small meal.

Long wait overpriced my burger

By M Richard M |

Long wait overpriced my burger was served cold. Fries mushy. So if you want trendy food and don’t mind being treated poorly eat here. The burger was average at best. Same style cooking as five guys. Press on grill. However when I went in there were about 15 pre made burgers on a rack. If you don’t have a cell phone. No menu. Can’t pay without cellular. Not worth the money nor the time. Eat across street no wait better burger

World class cheeseburger

By Angela1011 |

Apparently the best cheeseburger around and I’d have to agree. No reservations and the place is quite small. We were told it was a 90min wait but got taken in 45mins. We sat at the bar area which was great watching the chefs in action.

Very good food

By Isabel C |

We ordered a soup and the house burger. Both delicious! I highly recommend it. We arrived at night and it seemed like it was closed but we looked in a tunnel for the access door and we were able to enter! I was surprised by the number of people there and how quickly the waiters serve you.

NEVER AGAIN

By Joacoymascosas |

NEVER AGAIN. This is a highly recommended restaurant but is a poor recommendation. Don’t recommended, not at all. After a waiting list that kept us outside for THREE AND A HALF HOURS, they moved us to the bar where the cold wind continually entered and let us frozen, and they didn't want to change seats. They think they make the best hamburger in the country and they are just "common and ordinary". The service also leaves a lot to be desired. I imagine that time will put them in a much lower place than they are now. NEVER AGAIN.

Essentially You Are Here for the Burger(s)

By Marshall V |

"Would you for me to add house bacon or a fried egg on that burger??" I don't know chronologically, if Au Cheval was the point person with that, however, the bacon is great and worth the trip, some times they run out!!! This is a gastro pub's gastropub, plain and simple. A pretty good helping of hipsters and local business folk are the customers. If you aren't very familiar with Randolph St. in Chicago, it houses some of the busiest urban hip fair around the Midwest, and there is a literal ton to choose from, all within walking distance. This is a place where custom ground chopmeat forms into griddle patties, crisp and juicy, always. House Bologna I have had before, as I digress, its good. Fries are extra, basically sides are 4.00 and up. Local Beers and Artisan Drinks, yes. Tough to get into, sometimes. A possible non cozy feel from being received at the door, probably because they are always moving patrons into queue. It is Big City hustle and bustle, they food is very good folks. Burger is 14.00 and up!!

I feel ripped off

By PEDROWINE |

I visited Au Cheval in 2015. In that time I wrote a review in TripAdvisor rating a poor 1 star. I returned to Chicago last week, and wanted to give this place a second chance. Funny! I read my review of 2015 and it is 100% valid for my second visit, and I will not change a comma. Overrated restaurant! Good, only good burger. But the helpless long wait, load atmosphere, uncomfortability, and far too expensive price (65 dollars for a burger, plain fries.. and no drink!!). Waste of time. Waste of money. I do not understand the popularity of this place.

Worst experience, go elsewhere

By mgantman |

The burgers taste of nothing but salt, the “bacon” just makes it even worse. However, as if paying $20+ for a terrible burger isn’t enough, the staff acts as if they are better than everyone else and like the entire experience is all about them. Do yourself a favor and go to any other great burger place in this great city and avoid this disaster of an Instagram picture.

Rude hostess

By Stan A |

Never been treated this poorly in a restaurant. The hostess clearly didn’t want to seat our family of four, made up a 2h30 wait and had the nastiest attitude.

Banging Burger, great marrowbone

By G4UET |

Au Cheval, some say the best burger in the world, so let go see what the fuss is all about. We didn’t have a booking so signed up for an indoor table, wait, about an hour. Over the road is a microbrewery/pub so we settled in for a few drinks, waiting for the expected text message, which arrived within the promised time. I had been browsing the menu for two weeks, hoping we could come and visit this temple of American greats. A straight burger, with fries was ordered, along with the Roasted Marrow-Bone with braised short rib marmalade, yessssss. The service was slick and professional and before long the food arrived, it looked amazing. I was with some work colleagues who were going to share the ‘bones’ served with a thick cut slice of brioche toast, it was absolutely stunning, perfectly cooked and the mix of marrowbone and braise worked perfectly. Onto the burger, I don’t have them very often, but have had both night street chain and artisan, this was good, really good, no amazing. The bun was slightly compressed so you didn’t get an overload of bread, the patties cooked perfectly and the sharp cheese, cutting through the rich fat, it was spot. I am not sure I am qualified enough to state it’s the best burger in the world, but it’s the best I have ever had, and that’s good enough for me. Highly recommended, and chill in the bar opposite if you have to wait.

Considered by some to be one of America's best burgers

By Brad 🇭🇰 |

Au Cheval on West Randolph Street has been cited by a few food publications for having one of the best hamburgers in America. They are open from 11am to 10pm daily and have a fair-sized indoor seating area. However, given their popularity, expect a fairly long wait to be seated during normal dining periods. We stopped by around 5.30pm midweek and found the wait to be around 1 hour for a table. They will take your phone number and call when you are within 5-10 minutes of being seated. Thus, you can go to a nearby bar like Haymarket across the street for a drink while you wait. Menu includes a few other food items but everyone comes here for the signature cheeseburgers which they churn out fairly quickly. We tried their single and double cheeseburger with bacon. Not sure if these are the best in America but what was served was really good, a nice balance of beef, cheese, special sauce along with the slab of maple glazed bacon. You can order with egg as well. Burger was served with dill pickle. Fried ordered on the side were just ok. They have a good list of cocktails and handcraft beer to pair with the burgers. Environs are rather snug and fairly loud as this is a bar & grill. Staff were really friendly on the evening we dined here, service timely. Overall, this was a fairly pricey but really good burger experience, one worth trying if eager to know what some consider one of America's top burgers.

The BEST burger in Chicago - probably the best burger in the whole world!

By marikagoes |

Au Cheval is one of the best burger restaurants you can find in Chicago! The restaurant is located very popular area in the Fulton Market just about 30min walk from the downtown or you can pink or green metro line and hop off at Morgan stop and walk just a few minutes. Au Cheval does not take reservations, so be prepared for a long wait. Walk in and give your name and number to the host who will add you to the wait list. Good tip is that if the wait is super long, hop in to the next door brewery (Haymarket) to kill some time and have a drink! Au Cheval cheeseburger is must have! Notice that single cheeseburger has actually two patties and double cheeseburger has three patties. Add bacon to your cheeseburger it will be a game changer, the bacon is legit! The other must have is the chopped salad - comes with bacon, egg and ranch dressing. General jane’s honey-fried chicken is super good and highly recommend to try and share. Don’t forget the fries! One of the best fries - comes with super good aioli. Make sure you try their own root beer from the tap - refill is free so drink as much as you can! :) or make it float! :)

A Chicago icon ,with reservations!

By steverA8718SU |

Very popular and said to have the best hamburgers in Chicago . Not for me . The choice of only doubles with medium or well does not suit me or a good hamburger . Medium when they are thin is well done . No flavor or juice. I could do just as well an Mickey Ds . Service was excellent and the place is very popular . Well what do Chicagoan’s know about Burgers or Pizza . Maybe I’m wrong as people I’ve this place !

Small pub, BIG taste

By DevWatson |

A small pub so get there early. I highly recommend the Double Cheeseburger (which is really 3 patties). Awesome flavor!

Long wait times, tiny inside.

By Sarah |

Au Cheval is one of the better burgers places out there, so it came as no surprise when it was a must eat when I was in Chicago. I was struck with how long the wait is, 3-4 hours on a Sunday evening. We ended up going there the next day right when it opened and there was still a 30 min wait. I’m not surprised though, the inside is small!  I got the ‘must have’ single cheeseburger (2 patties) with the added egg and bacon. It was yummy but very rich and heavy. If you plan on ordering appetizers or sides with your burger, there a good chance you might not be able to eat all the food. The portion size is decent. The roasted marrow bones with beef cheek marmalade and toast was delicious, but a hit or miss on the bone having a decent amount of morrow on it. The beef cheek marmalade was the star of that dish and has so much flavor. I wanted to just put the marmalade on everything. If you guys are a fan of pickles, I highly recommend ordering a side of bread & butter pickles to munch on with your order. It help cuts out the richness and adds that much needed acidity for their dishes. Everything is rich, rich, rich. The root beer float on draft is another must have for those going the non-alcoholic route. Bubbly, smooth and not overtly sweet. Overall, Au Cheval is definitely a place to try when in Chicago, but I wouldn’t wait more than 2 hours to eat here. Service was decent.

Delicious comfort food - perfect for a night out with friends!

By Chris |

Delicious food in a fun setting! Friday night was a bit loud for date night but great with friends. Must order the burger (with bacon), General Jane’s chicken wings and bone marrow. Great cocktails, too.

Don’t believe the hype

By MGarlan123 |

I really dont get what the hype is about this place. Super disappointing and I heard another diner say the same thing on his way out. Fries arrived well before the burgers. Burgers were completely average. Adult meals came before the kids. Omelette and salad came even later. Two hour wait for a $150 meal (before tip!) that was so subpar. Definitely not kid friendly. Do yourself a favor and save your money. Overpriced and not worth it.

WHAT A BURGER !!

By Laura Fiallo |

This place was recommended by some friends, and how ON THE SPOT they were. I am not a very big hamburger eater, but this is one of the BEST I have ever had. Very juicy and tasteful. A MUST STOP in Chicago.

Not the best burger, but very good

By BLtrvl |

So the rep is a long wait for the best burger in town...the wait wasn't actually too bad (about 45 minutes), but can't say this is the best burger in town, or certainly ever. No doubt it's good but not equal to the hype. Pro tip: Have a beer or two down the street at Lone Wolf while you wait. Also, get a salad - we shared one, went very well with the burger.

No title does this justice

By Tyrone H |

Without a doubt the coolest venue and best burger that I have ever had (except for when I make them). Simple but cooked to perfection buy an expert crew. Be sure to have the eggs and bacon on the burgers and starve yourself for a day before you get there so you have room for this great indulgence.

au Cheval for dinner

By Ken M |

Service was prompt and friendly. The burgers were GREAT! Good beer selection. Dessert of puff pastry with vanilla gelato was stunning.

Great Burger & Garlic Aioli

By shereenbourne |

I enjoyed the burger and garlic aioli that came with the fries. Large portions. Highly recommend visiting!

The Best Burgers EVER!!!

By pattycake0421 |

I was told this place had the best burgers in Chicago & this is undoubtly true! You will be missing out if you leave Chicago without eating here & if you are going to a Cubs game you should stop in either before or after the game. Oh & did I mention they served me the best Bloody Mary I have ever had. I cannot stop gushing about this restaurant!!!

Fun Neal and Great Server!

By CharlieinTexas |

Had a great lunch here with a friend. Great vibe, lots of activity and amazing service from a friendly server that was also a good conversationalist and knew the menu very well. My friend’s matzoh ball soup makes me wish I ordered it as it looked fantastic and he said it tasted great! I had the chopped chicken liver, which was OK, but quite honestly nothing special. We each had a burger, which was excellent, although I am not going to say it’s one of the best burgers I’ve ever had or the best in the country, which is apparently the mantra for the burger. French fries were actually disappointing; very ordinary. Two additional comments. See the picture of our server, but sadly, I forgot his name. Sorry about that young man. And, the bloody Mary was one of the best Bloody Mary’s I’ve ever had! The overall experience was wonderful and I would love to go back and try something else next time.

Worth the wait time!

By Cew00 |

No pre-booking option but very efficient system they have in on-site booking. They will advise you on places to go to in the area to wait for the booking time. The food is delicious and the service is great. By all means a must visit on a trip to Chicago.

Passport to Heaven

By Gutom Jones |

One of my favorite restaurants in downtown Chicago. There’s always a line though but they will text you when a table frees up. Last December we waited an hour. We always get the cheeseburger with bacon. Their aioli sauce that goes with the fries is heavenly. My visiting daughter from California says it’s the best burger ever and she’d always visit this place whenever she’s in town. Great staff and service.

very yummy cheeseburger and fries with egg

By Jessie |

I really enjoyed eating the food here. Went here around midnight after an event we attended. My comment was the reservation part. It'll be good to have an online system since they're too busy to pick up the phone. We had to go there twice just to check the queue. The menu prices are definitely a little higher than your average burger btw.

Hands Down Best Burger

By Casey J |

This place was recommended to me by a local and so glad I went. I had one of the best burgers I’ve ever eaten at Au Cheval. Just a warning….They do not take reservations, so you may have a wait, but it’s so worth it. I had the burger with egg and bacon. The garlic aioli that comes with the fries was really good too. The staff was friendly and we were served fast.

Garlic aioli for the win

By hrminella |

For all of the hype around this resturant, I went in with very high expectations. The resturant is small and bustling with hungry customers, who all seem very happy. If you come here you should only get the burger and fries. It sounds like something no one should pay almost over 10$ for but trust me, it's worth every penny. The party is flavorful and topped with the best American cheese blend I've ever had, pickes, garlic aioli, and a small amount of lettuce. And the bun is so soft yet seared on the cook top to have a nice crunch. And if the burger isn't intcing enough, get the crunchy fries which are topped in melted cheese, a fried egg, and have garlic aioli on the side. PRO TIP, get a double burger, you won't regret it. The staff is nice and friendly and the food came very quick. Only 1 star lost because it is a pricey burger, but totally worth it!

Not worth the wait

By neals879 |

We were visiting from out of town. Our friends said that we have to try the burgers at this famous burger place in the neighborhood. The burgers are great (fries average) but I have had equally good ones elsewhere. There was a three hour wait but we were staying close and you have 15 minutes to show up. When we we were texted that our table was ready, we were supposed to get the next table. Inexplicably, another group was brought in who were definitely lower on the list. Even if that party was a friend or relative of the manager, it was wrong. We waited another 45 minutes. I suggest that a reservation system would make more sense.

Best burgers I’ve had in Chicago

By Islandre |

Friendly staff, quick service and great food. Best burgers I’ve had… and those fries with aioli were incredible. A bit tight indoors so we chose to eat outside, staff didn’t miss a beat! Will repeat.

Damn Good Burger

By LindyLa02 |

This is definitely one of the best burgers in Chicago if you’re up for a 2 hour wait during busy times. They don’t take reservations, so I recommend putting your name in and then getting drinks at any of the great west loop restaurants and bars nearby.

We came for the burgers, but I fell in love with a salad.

By Jil R |

Me and my friends went to Au Cheval for the burger and fries, and they were good, but I ordered a kale salad with chicken, to go. And OMG I think it’s my favorite. I’ll be returning there soon to order salad take out. We munched on wings too. Six of us shared a dessert and it was light but filling, we all enjoyed it.

Very good Burgers

By 84u2c |

I believe that this place ind over rated. IO have had many burgers better than here, which is not to say that they are not good. But the reputation exceeds the food performance and the noise level inside the restaurant is near the pain threshold. You cannot talk and hear during the busy times. Service is very , very average and sometimes lower than that.

Best Burger

By Kevin Corbett |

The waiter was excited to explain the menu options and when he found out we were gluten free he shared there was a perfect option. Single means Double patty . Double means Triple patty. It was towering on top of hash browns, smothered in cheese covered with amazing peppered bacon and a fried egg.. just take the recommendation and get the original burger. Place looks like a speakeasy all wait staff fast super helpful. Full bar with period themed drinks. Excellent

Great Burger, Meh Fries, Terrible Service

By H M |

My husband and I ate at the bar on a Thursday night. The decor was perfectly suited to a hamburger place. Nice, but not too pretentious. We ordered two drinks and our server promptly came back with the beverages. We placed our order, two burgers with fries and another drink for my husband. The double burger with fried egg was better then expected. Perfect bun/burger ratio. Nice pickle crunch with the perfectly cooked fried egg on top. Delicious. The $7 fries, were just your average fries. No special seasoning or anything that made them memorable. We were finishing up with our dinner, when my husband realized he still did not receive his beverage. After having to wait for over 10 minutes for another beer, he asked the waitress as she was walking by, "Excuse me, but I'm not sure if you recall, but I ordered another beer." Her reply, an annoyed, "I know." When our check came, we noticed we were charged for 4 drinks, when we only ordered 3. When we asked our waitress about this she just said she would take care of it, offering us no apology. I understand, mistakes happen, things get forgotten, but there is never any excuse for not owning up to your error. Tis a shame.

Upmarket burger restaurant

By jpvin |

There was a vibrant, young vibe about this popular burger restaurant, and it was certainly busy on this Thursday evening. Upon arriving without a reservation, we actually had to book a table and return after an hour. I had a double cheeseburger; my partner the fried General Jane’s Honey Fried Chicken, and they both went down a treat. With some of the best fries I think I’ve ever eaten! The serving staff were efficient and personable, and the dining room was comfortable and cosy, albeit a bit noisy (I guess I am getting old). Certainly recommended.

Worth the wait but not the best

By JRDurden |

This is one of the best burgers I’ve had in my life however it’s not the best in Chicago in my humble option. Yes it’s worth the lengthy wait & you’d struggle to find better however I’m a foodie & I know where to get the best. In all honesty this is a ranked as the second best burger.

Just Incredible

By Josh S |

I will keep this short. This is a must. Best burger I have ever had. The quality of the meat combined with the candied, pepper bacon, and the most perfectly cooked egg on top makes this a must. This beats any Wagyu burger any day of the week. Not to mention the great atmosphere and extremely informative and helpful staff.

Gluttony in all it's glory

By Blake P |

My first night in Chicago and memorable one at that. Although the wait time for a Thursday night at 7pm lingered around 2-2.5 hours long (with 18 parties ahead of us) we found comfort next door at Lone Wolf. As for the eating experience, expect a dark, candle lit, cavernous aurora with rich, fatty, meat smells emanating from the open grill. I opted for the single cheeseburger with added Foie gras and egg. Absolutely one of the best burgers I have had; patty cooked to medium rare. This was paired with a dragon’s milk stout , a strong 11% beer with dark-chocolate and cherry flavours which complimented the rich burger. I will return when back in the states!

Cheeseburger paradise

By Sheena F |

Worth the wait, definitely get the hype behind this place. Best burger I've ever had hands down. We were fortunate enough to sit at the bar which overlooks the line. It was so cool to see the food being cooked and the different entrees as they came out.

Not worth the fame

By Ioannis D |

I went for the supposedly best burger of Chicago. The burger was tasty, alright (although there are much better burgers in Europe nowadays, and the American -burger-dream is only an illusion). However, for this mediocre environment/ambience, this mediocre service and this (not exceptional) food quality, the price one has to pay is much too high.

Best burgers in town!

By Randeelou |

Great Burgers. Must try to get in here if in Chicago and you live be burgers. Go at 5 if you don’t want long wait. Add bacon, life changing Fried bologna sandwich was awesome too

Incredible.

By Gavin B3RWY |

This place is famed for its burgers. They are amazing. Perfectly balanced. Not too much bread. Not too stodgy. Amazing flavours. And the fried chicken is awesome too. The side of hash browns is a must! And I had to have the matzo ball soup too! What a place. You must go. Tip. Go outside of core eating times otherwise you will queue for hours.

Burger And Bloody Mary For Breakfast? Absolutely!

By Mobile798284 |

Unquestionably The Best Burger Ever ! Very Cool, Industrial Style Restaurant. Great Music As A Backdrop ! Expect A Wait . Just Fantastic!

Believe the hype! A must do in Chicago.

By Rena W |

Both my husband and I agree -- the best burger we've ever had. Great experience, great service, great food! As suggested by others, we got there early on a Tuesday evening and put our names on the list. We were quoted a 45 minute wait, but it was more like 28. Walked around the cool neighborhood and had a cocktail and stood outside waiting o a cool beautiful night. Seated in the back, which was great. We both ordered the double cheeseburgers; my husband added bacon. Also had one order of fries and a side salad. Next time will split a double burger. Music is lively and with the exception of the first few songs which fell in the rap category, we were OK with the music and overall scene. A must do in Chicago.

Good burgers, but...

By Luis T |

Restaurant where the main protagonist is the burger. Good meat, tasty, good bread, and if you pay extra, very good bacon. Two things, we had to wait more than an hour to sit down. To their credit, they have an automated system where they call you and you have reasonable time to arrive. The second, and the compelling reason for my score, is that I ended up paying (with tip included) over a hundred and thirty dollars for three cheese burgers with bacon and three beers. Too much!!! Very tasty, but they had nothing to differentiate them from other tasty burgers, except the bacon, which was thicker than normal. Too much money for a simple meal in my personal opinion, of course.

Good but not great

By Matthew C |

We waited 1hr 40 minutes. Good experience but food is not worth the wait. The burgers did not make my global top burger list - see https://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g187147-d6575305-r795109912-Il_Etait_Un_Square-Paris_Ile_de_France.html Cool vibe though.

Best Burger in Town!

By jcpp0310 |

I came to this place about 3 months ago, and was blown away by their absolutely delicious burger, so much that I went back this weekend straight from the airport. It is definitely a must every time I'm in Chicago!

Worth the wait

By IF121824 |

Get ready to do 1.5/2 hours in a row before having a table available. We went there at 5.30pm to be able to eat at 7pm. Cute place, the interior is a bit chaotic because it is small and with very loud music. Really good burger, fast Service and very friendly staff. Prices as high as in any American city, but worth it.

Good burgers but a bit over-hyped

By Greg C |

Not sure it was the best burger I ever had, but it was certainly very good. The bone marrow was interesting -- but both it and the burger were very rich. I found it frustrating that they don't provide more information regarding their no-reservations policy. I went by at 2:00 on a weeknight to try to put my name in for 7:00 and they would not let me. They suggested I come back at 6:00 and put my name it, which I did, but by then they said the wait was 1 1/2 hours. Unfortunately that grew to 2 hours.

Definitely one of the best burgers!!

By Cindy M |

I came here a few months ago (after having been to Small Cheval a few times), after a friend came in from out of town. She has dietary restrictions, so she just picked this place off the map, since it was close to her hotel. She had no idea how popular it is though! LOL! So another friend and myself were more than happy to finally try it. We met around 5 p.m., and put our names on the list. We were able to hang outside while we waited. But they do use the system that texts your cell phone, so you could walk around the area if you wanted. Plus, you then have I believe 10 minutes to reply that you're on your way back. We had to wait about 30-40 minutes, but it was so nice out and we had fun catching up. The place inside is small, hence the long wait. But the food is delicious!! Our friend was able to order her burger without the things she can't eat, including the bun, and they gave her plenty of lettuce to make it into a kind of a wrap. And she agreed, it was great! We also enjoyed a couple of root beer floats! Oh, and we ordered 2 sides of fires, but there was a lot, so you could really share. It's definitely a place to check out if you're in the area. Oh, and the hostess was super nice too, had a great time chatting with her as they cleaned our table.

The best burger

By José Manuel Miranda |

The best burger I’ve had so far. The music was quite pleasant, and it’s an excellent atmosphere for conversation. I absolutely loved it

Get bacon at a minimum

By Kevin B |

Is it an amazing burger? Yes. Is it worth the price? No. But I would still probably treat myself a few times a year to it. The bun is great with a little Dijon/mayo, onions and pictures. The show stopper is the bacon. Thick cut, smoked, and peppery. Borderline candied bacon. Egg also beautiful. Wish the yolk was a tad runnier but still creamy. The thing that surprised me is they use frozen patties. Normally frozen patties you are cooking to medium well so they defrost enough. These still came out a warm medium so kudos to the chef. On principle $27 for frozen patties as an element is nuts. Still delicious and well executed.

All About the Burgers!!

By MKTBE |

We love burgers, and when on holiday, eating a good burger is a must! Our Chicago host put our name on the wait list, and we stayed in AC until our table was ready. It was great as the line was very long, but we were able to be seated immediately. We did dine on the outdoor patio, so we can't comment on the ambiance of the restaurant. Our server was amazing. He was so personable and engaging (I wish I could remember his name). The Hamburgers & Fries were great. Just make sure you order a single! My husband wanted to try something different, so he decided on the Fried Bologna Sandwich. There was a lot of Bologna, and only the outside pieces of Bologna were fried. He did not enjoy it and definitely wished he would have ordered a burger! We will return! 🍔 🍟

Sublime burgers!

By Anne & Dennis |

Best burgers we have had - and we have had a few.....Great staff as well and the lady who took our booking was delightful. Very efficient system, we gave our name and number and they texted us an hour later. We took a stroll around Fulton working up our appetite so it worked out pretty well. Cosy restaurant with cool air conditioning and funky vibe. The Bologna sandwich was amazing but pipped to the post by the burger. Brioche buns were divine. Will be returning before we leave Chicago!

A Dinner With A Mean Burger.

By Conny Wylie |

Au Cheval is located in the Chicago West Loop neighborhood. It's walls are mostly exposed brick and a long bar with counter seating that takes up the primary dimension of the eatery's footprint.. It has a dinner style menu but it is taunted as having the best burger in Chicago....America for that matter. So I broke down and ordered one of these monsters.......they are right .....this is one gem of a burger. I washed things down with a root beer followed by an amazing mille-feuille.......a mountainous concoction of pastry and creme. This is a great dinner with a mean burger.

A classy cheeseburger

By Anthony B |

I've read many a great review in many publications, so on this trip I decided it was a must visit. Fortunately being a solo traveller I was able to get a seat immediately at the bar. Though being ticked up in the corner where staff nudge away as they put clean glasses there didn't make for a comfortable experience. The bar man took my order which was a positive as waiting for anyone else would have left me starving. I went for the double (triple cheeseburger) with bacon and egg. It was huge, a full mouth full, which I loved.

One of the Best Burgers I have ever had......

By Osweg0 |

In Chicago for business and were recommended to Au Cheval. It lives up to all the hype. Classic Cheeseburger was amazing (we added egg and bacon) and shared fries. Arrived about 6:00PM and wait was 45 minutes which was worth every minute. Service was excellent and had a great drinks/beer menu including Non-Alcoholic Beer choices (Einbecher in a bottle)

Perfect breakfast

By Giles O |

Just had a near religious food experience here for late breakfast. Foodie heaven. Great cocktails, unique food options, great service, and a nice space for an incredible breakfast experience. Duck heart gravy. Yes!

Tasty burger and great beer

By Jessica N |

We had read that Au cheval has the best burgers and We were not disappointed. We had a seat at the bar, next to the large assortment of beer. We ordered a double cheeseburger and a fries to share. The waitress recommended a perfect match of beer. The burger was really juicy, the cheese perfect melt. Aioli to the fries was really tasty with the perfect amount of garlic not to much, just perfect. The burger is really large, and a single one would have been enough, and yet-i ate it all, just because it was SO GOOD. The atmosphere is nice, and people in all age was eating -all with a smile

Bad experience

By Miguel T |

I had a very bad experience at your place. I was on the waiting list for one hour and half, stepped out for 10 minutes, after waiting for one hour and 15 minutes to help my girlfriend in and while I had a tap opened at the bar, another couple who had just arrived there, took our seats. I complaint and while I had an open tap, the manager told me it was my fault. There are better ways to handle this things. For example, ask questions to your guests about their experience. When I arrived, I was told the host seats at the bar also and granted me a spot. One would figure that if there's an open tap for an hour and 15 minutes that it would be respected for 10 minutes. What's if someone was using the restroom for that time? One would lose their chair? Of course I will never recommend nor eat there in my entire lifetime.

Wonderful

By Tim Z |

I was pleasantly surprised to find an available seat at the bar right away on a lovely Sunday morning around 11am. It was such a fun experience to sit there and witness the talented cooks in action, effortlessly creating delicious dishes. The fried bologna sandwich exceeded all expectations - thinly sliced, generously stacked, and absolutely mouthwatering. As for the burger with added bacon and egg, it was truly outstanding. And let's not forget to mention the fries, which were incredibly tasty, especially when paired with the amazing garlic dipping sauce! I am eagerly looking forward to my next visit.

Most salty burger ever!

Thought I was going to have the best burger ever, but it was the most salty burger I ever had! Starters were good, but burger was so bad! Was never offered dessert. Visit 16 October 2019.

Been in all states, tried all kind of burgers, but this, this burger is the best I’ve ever had. Its ingredients are suitable and their cooking makes it the finest in the country. Great experience, better service.

THE hamburger

By Mauricio Q |

Unbelievable burger, it felt unreal and it wasn’t pricey, which was a plus. This place came highly recommended and I was not disappointed. Be aware there are no reservations at this restaurant and waiting times may be long

Best burgers in Chicago!

By -Daniel- |

This was the best burger of my life! Just like most of the others who have come here on a normal day in a windy Chicago, we came with high expectations and had to wait 40 minutes on a table (ask to be on the sms list so you do not have to wait just outside and can go for a walk instead). However, the food was worth both the wait and the too loud music. The burgers were perfectly cooked not a lot of unnecessary on but just really good ingredients! Tips please try Hashbrowns! Well worth the detour and wait.

Had their delicious burger after a late night out. It hit the spot, it was as good as I had heard. Au Cheval come to New York.

Be hungry or go home

By Michael G |

Wow just about the best burger I’ve ever had. It’s a must for anyone who wants a burger in a restaurant for lunch or dinner. Well run, high quality restaurant that I would go back to again and again.

Hot ticket!

By Simon B |

Au Cheval was recommended to us and doesn't disappoint. Great burgers! They don't do reservations. They open at 10 and we got there at 5 past and there was no line but the place was almost full. With in 10 minutes there was, so be warned it's popular!

Worth The Visit

By Dealmaker |

Reading the reveiws on Au Cheval made this restaurnat a must since I was visiting the area where Au Cheval is located. I arrived at 5:30 PM and was able to grab a seat at the bar and watch the cooks at work in theopen kitchen. Normally wheh I get thin patty burgers they are dried out, but not the regukar (2 patty) burger. The burger was moist and excellent, The fresh made french fries were crisp and hot, Loved the sauce that cake witgh the fries,.I want to go abck and sample some of the other items on the menu as everything I saw looked great, When I left the line to get in was out the door.

If you love burgers this is a must try!

By cruzegirl |

I only eat burgers once a year but while visiting Chicago on business our Uber driver highly recommended we visit Au Cheval and it did not disappoint! Levi and Dillon added to our experience making us feel like we were one of the locals. Definitely arrive early and hungry, we had the double with the egg and bacon, a side of fries with the delicious aoli Dippin sauce and the bread and butter pickles. They have an extensive beer menu and some craft cocktails. Shout out to all the cooks who work tirelessly with smiles on their faces feeding a very hungry crowd. I would definitely go back and highly recommend you give it a try!

Equal to the hype

By Lorrin K |

Prepare to wait at least 45 minutes on a good day, otherwise 1-2 hours, but the experience is worth it. Servers are personable and seem to take pride in their restaurant, like they’re a part of something special. The rye cocktail I had was delicious. The cheese burger was as good as you see in reviews, and the fries were excellent...among the best in texture and flavor as I’ve had around the country. Au Cheval is worth going out of your way for in downtown.

A must visit.

By fwinei |

The place is absolutely flipping amazing. Whatever the wait is...it's worth it. If I were you I would request to sit at the bar. It's like a meal AND a show. Let's start with the basics. The food is absolutely fantastic. We had the chicken livers, a burger and eggs with fries. All 10 it of 10. Server was great too. I think his name was Joshua. They were crazy busy and he was on top of everything. Now, why sit at the bar? I've run restaurants my entire life and I'll tell you there isn't a more professional group than these guys. Chef is expoing and if he has to jump on the line for a moment out of nowhere someone else steps into the window and and drives on. They had a new guy in the line and he was clearly learning but the guy in the egg station, I think his name was Juan Carlos always had an eye on him. Julias almost drops something, JC is right behind him, he puts something in the wrong place and he is gently corrected or hands on corrected. I only wish some of the folks I worked with in my youth were this good. No one raises their voice everything just runs smoothly.

Good burger

By Ali Van D |

Really great burger that has a lot of hype. So much so that my first experience I wasn’t sure but the second time I went it was amazing. The fries with an egg and cheese sauce are also great. You’ll have to wait awhile because it’s a small place but it’s pretty worth it

Absolutely incredible and worth the hype!

By LCopley |

One of the absolute best burgers we have ever had. My husband had looked up best burger in America and saw that this spot was rare #1. When we decided to make a trip to the area, this was our first spot and it definitely didn’t disappoint! The burger was perfect amount of juicy, the wings had incredible flavor, and we couldn’t decide on the potato side so we ended up with both fries and hash browns. If you’re torn between the two, they’re both good, but go with the hashbrowns. I cannot remember our server’s name but she was so bubbly and great and was helpful in helping us navigate the area as well. We can’t wait to return!

Amazing

By Katrina G |

Au Cheval is our must-do restaurant whenever we are in Chicago. The burger is the best I have ever had and worth every penny. The service is always fantastic.

Well renowned burger! You have to try it!

By Matias B |

We love burgers and needed to visit this place when in Chicago. OMG amazing! Have to say though that the wait is never-ending. They do take your number so you get notified when a seat is available. But still, too much. We went back to our hotel, monitored in a link the expected time left, and then went back. Still, we almost didn't get in as they were closing. But just be patient and eventually they will call your name. We don't usually enjoy eating at the counter, but this time I'm glad we did. The process behind each burger, how they cook the eggs (a specialty), how clean and meticulous they are. Just impressive. First-class service, and amazing food!

Amazing experience

By Pani Bożenka |

Hands down the best burger i had. Full of flavour and spice. DEfinately worth the wait outside :) Reservations only

All hype, no bite

By Sisyphus |

Food is good, but actually getting a table is hard and clearly the restaurant likes to have people queuing and/or being turned away at the door to create ‘hype’. We tried numerous times to get a table. On each occasion we were told there was a 45-60 minute wait despite numerous (25+ tables) inside and outside. When we politely queried why there were empty tables, we were told ‘these are for people on the waitlist’. Those people were not present. We, and others, together with our wallets, were. Clearly ‘the wait’ is part of ‘the brand’. Fair enough but the food and atmosphere aren’t worth it once you finally get it.

Lives up to the Burger Hype!!

By Gigglesbubbles |

Au Cheval lives up to the Chicago burger hype!! It was so delicious!! Best burgers we ever ate. Def get the bacon and egg on burger. We will be back. We came in for lunch at 2:30 and got a booth immediately. It was a slow Wednesday afternoon and actually came when there was no wait. Last time we tried it was a Friday night with a 3 hour wait. Timing is everything.

BEST BURGER EVER!!!!

By jedokids7 |

We had to wait about an hour -- but sooooo worth it! Literally - the best burger I have ever had in my life - hands down!!!

Very decent premise burger

By blinkentrip |

Arrived around 4:30 pm, already a queue but very friendly seating service outside. Got a seat at the bar ~15 mins later and it was good fun watching the crew prepare all the orders - like a clockwork. Did the classic single with eggs, bacon, and a brew. Great service, marvelous burger (the egg is runny and the squish never gets old) with a particularly pleasant cheese to beef ratio. It’s a premium burger that is delightfully unpretentious so definitely worth the wait but if you’re in Chicago anyway: Portillo‘s plain cheeseburger is an excellent contender at a third of the price and prepared within a couple of minutes.

Best Burger

By Emily C |

Quite literally rendered speechless. Couldn’t talk while eating. Not kidding when I say it’s the best burger I’ve had, and probably will have, in my life.

Awesome

By Mark R |

We tried to eat here last week after the auto show. 2.5 to 3hr wait. Ugh. We arrived just after they opened and we were seated immediately. 1+ hr drive and worth it! Also, fabulous fries.

That was some Cheeseburger

By Ladye A |

They do not take reservations, so walk up and get in line and they will text you when it is time. While you wait go next door to the Lone Wolf, have a drink watch a game until they text you to come on. We enjoyed the Cheeseburger and the gorgeous Fried Bologna Sandwich. The french fries were also very good. Bee's Knees was better than I make at home. Hubby loved the Rootbeer on tap. Tight eating area, but worth it.

I have seen heaven. And it is a burger from Au Cheval

By Kentuxan |

I came here for a lunch with colleagues while in Chicago for business. Au Cheval was recommended strongly by a coworker, so we decided to check it out. I got the burger with bacon. My life will never be the same. I can still taste it today. The bacon was insanely thick and delicious. The patties were juicy. And, they make their own root beer. SHUT THE FRONT DOOR. It was awesome, especially on a day that resembled a blast furnace.

Not for vegetarians

By hanhayes |

OK I get it .... it's cool to cook things in duck fat or lard (why I don't know). But really? A friend took me, and if I were on my own I would have left. As a vegetarian my options were a grill cheese sandwich (no fries ... beef fat) or kale salad. I asked about the chiliquiles, but even the tortilla chips are cooked in beef fat. So I got them without chips and the server was nice enough to cut the price. But they should really have Beef Fat in their name.

Won't go to Chicago without going to Au Cheval

By Edyn |

This is wholeheartedly the best burger I've ever had. Every time we go to Chicago, we always make a stop at Au Cheval. Highly recommend the single burger + egg with bacon on the side. Also, any place that serve a bag of Fritos with their chili deserve 5 stars. Never had a bad bite here.

Should try Au Cheval's burger at least once

By ptintin |

Good restaurant! The burger was really good, especially with the bacon, which is not only special because of its texture (more like an additional piece of meat than a crispy slice) but also because of its sweet flavor (may have some maple sauce when cooked). The fries were good too, thanks to their sauce that has a strong garlic flavor. The salad wasn't my favorite (didn't find anything special in it and found it a little overpriced), but I know the restaurant is not defined by it. I would recommend it if you're not too hungry and want to try the burger with fries and salad—maybe share it with someone else.

Pre-Game grubbin!

By dchaka |

Met up with friends before the Cubs game had burgers and fries that were awesome. Gave the chicken tenders a try and they did not disappoint either. bartender was attentive and it was a great time highly recommend!

Perfect. No, amazing. Both.

By RyanPeggy |

Our first adventure in the West loop this morning led us to coffee shops that didn’t have breakfast. High on caffeine and a donut we were scrambling for breakfast. We stumbled across Au Cheval as we were looking for a diner that has closed. Their exterior is non descript with outdoor seating in front. They have an all day menu that includes breakfast items. It was a beautiful day so we sat outside at the picnic tables. Our wonderful waitress, Maria, informed us they are known for their burgers. So for breakfast we split a single (two patties) with egg. We added a side of thick cut peppered bacon. My wife calls this style of burger “classic”. It was perfect. Look at the photos, amazing and perfect. Both. The inside of restaurant has a swanky bar feel. On top of all that Maria brought us a “welcome to Chicago” scoop of gelato. Yumm. burger, bacon, two beers: 40$

Must-eat if you're prepared for wait

By Christine F |

Do not show up here without a game plan. I arrive at 4:50 prepared to put in our names, expecting a 2-3 hour wait. The girl ahead of me in line to put our names in (which took less than 5 minutes) was shocked and irritated at the 3 hour wait and stormed out. Okay. I gave them my name and number, and promptly received a text via Resy. I was able to text back and monitor our wait time all night. I had made a reservation for drinks at the Aviary ( a couple blocks away) for 5pm, so we walked over there, checking the line every 30 minutes or so. When the numbers started dropping, we headed closer, to Cira, as you have 10 minutes to arrive. We were seated at the bar about 2.5 hours later (your wait time is less if you're willing to dine at the bar). What can I say that hasn't been said? The food is amazing, and incredibly inexpensive. We shared the bone marrow, cheeseburger (a single is really a double! ask about this), and fries with a side of cheese sauce, with a root beer to finish as "dessert". Very inexpensive. The whole night was fabulous and dining at the bar, which I usually hate, was actually its own experience. So good, well done!

Delicious cheeseburgers

By emiliacosmo88 |

The cheeseburgers in this restaurant are delicious and indeed legendary. There is an open kitchen and the chefs use a nice variety of ingredients from bologna to foie gras.

“I need a card”??

By Heine Husted H |

Burger restaurant on top of their game. By far the Birger I had this time in the US, double cheeseburger with egg. Is may not be all that, but it was. The real deal though was the bacon…. Not in the burger, but as a side😳 marinaers in sirup and fried with Black pepper, not crispy, but TO DIE FOR…. The bacon deserves 6 stars. Unfortunately the door policy in the place is from the 90’s. The door man refused to accept international electronic ID, and we were not allowed back for s second visit. So 4 stars only

Very good burger, really terrible management

By WillEdHolmes |

We were so, so disappointed by the way in which our evening was handled by management and some of the staff at Au Cheval. We arrived late (around half 6) on a Friday night, and were told that there was a 5 and a half hour waiting list. That in itself was not a problem - we knew there would be a wait. We went away and were texted at midnight that a table was ready. One of our friends was unable to come with us, so we set off without him, hoping he would meet us there. Once we’d arrived, we were told that without all three of us, there would be no table and we would have to join the back of the queue. We agreed that we would sit as a pair, and sat in a booth for four people. We ordered - a couple of burgers and some sides - and almost immediately our friend texted that he would be on his way - we apologised to our waitress/the manager, and explained the situation. The manager was completely unmoving, and absolutely refused to allow our friend to make an order - the order would have been a single burger, whilst we sat in a booth for four. We were “allowed” to have our friend join us and share our food, but not allowed to order for him. I understand that the restaurant has processes and policies. But it is clearly ridiculous to refuse point blank to allow an order for a single burger, given that the table space was already taken, and given that our friend had waited for five and a half hours for a table - which was originally booked for three. It completely ruined what would have been a great meal and evening. Our burger was very good - though I have to say not the best burger I’ve ever had, and not worth such a long wait - and our sides were really delicious. You cannot treat your customers like we were treated. Your processes and policies cannot be so immovable as to result in you refusing extra money for no extra time or space. Really disappointing.

Great burger and fries!

By dblang1 |

Great cheeseburger! Fries were also amazing! Fun to sit at the bar and watch all the food being prepared. $3 tall boys for those that appreciate a deal.

Burger heaven!

By wanderawr |

Honestly didn’t even know about the hype for this place before we decided to come for an early dinner on a random Thursday. No reservations, no wait, so we had no inkling how popular this place actually was, but after having one of their signature burgers I can believe in the hype. I had a single cheeseburger with bacon and egg, and each bite was full of artery clogging goodness. A single burger actually comes with two patties, so it was more than enough to keep me full for the rest of the night. It’s been over a month since we went, but I’m still drooling thinking about that burger as I write this. Definitely worth trying when in Chicago.

Worth the Wait!

By Slydog9 |

With all the hype the last few years it can be difficult to get in here in a short amount of time. Good thing is there are plenty of places to drink and wait for that text. And when it comes you get excited and thankful at the same time. If you go with a mod size group get some things to share in addition to the BURGER. That amazing best I’ve ever had burger. Prior to my visits here I never tried an egg on a burger. It just didn’t seem right and I’m not a big fan of eggs anyways. Go with the egg. Go with the cheese. And go with the bacon. You must! Grab the fries and the delicious sauce that go with them. Seriously the burger is amazing and I cannot wait to go back. Seating is tight but service is good. Clearly they want you to get in guzzle a drink, eat and then bounce but that’s ok. They deserve the hype and it is worth the wait.

Big burger ever! Worth the wait.

By ParkeGreenfield |

My son and I visited Au Chavel, and we both had bacon cheeseburgers. We both agreed that this is the new standard for burgers. They hash browns were also memorable. We stopped by at 6 PM on a Sunday night and were told the wait would be 1.5 - 2 hours. We got in in 1hr 20 minutes. We went door to the Little Goat and got drinks at the bar. We asked if it was worth the wait. And, without hesitation he said yes. He was not wrong. We will be back!

Excellent burger!

By Norris A |

Sometimes we are in the mood for a simple burger and fries. Au Cheval has a reputation for their burgers. We have a reputation for eating them. No way were we interested in waiting hours for a table as seems to be the norm. We ordered delivery through Doordash and had a couple of burgers with fries waiting outside our apartment door within the hour. The burgers travel well but the fries were too cool to eat upon arrival so we had our oven at 400 degrees and turned the heat off to bring the fries to temperature for 10 minutes. The burgers went in for 3 minutes or so. Well the burger was excellent indeed and because our cheeks were stuffed like squirrels we did a lot of head nodding in approval. Good quality meat with a fierce sear locking in the juices topped with some melted cheese and pickles in a garlic aioli. Not a grease running down your arm and scalding your armpit burger, just a well executed patty of flavor in a nice big bun that didn't fall apart. The fries weren't greasy either and would best be eaten in situ just out of the fryer. On the reheat which is our tried and tested method for delivery warm-ups they remained crispy but very dried out in a "these must be those new cardboard potatoes" kind of way. In the restaurant they would surely get a big thumbs up. The burger will definitely be ordered again!

Can’t miss place!

By Glenn E |

The food was spectacular. We had adult beverages, chicken liver and fried chicken appetizers, burgers and bologna sandwiches. Love it. Every time we go to Chicago this is a must stop place.

This burger is an elixir!!!

By felipe torres |

If it's not the best burger I've ever had in my life, it's very close. Excellent! It's not cheap, but it's worth it.

So good, so good, so good!

By mdagarwal |

I love hamburgers and I'm pretty picky. Our driver told us about Au Cheval on the way to our hotel. This was so good! I got the double which is four patties. Being from California a double is usually two patties. Menu clearly states what it is, but I didn't pay attention. It was amazing! I'm a petite female and I ate almost all of if. Delicious! I had good memories of the "Drake Burger" at the Drake hotel from 24 years before. This blew it out of the water and it's a don't miss on my recommendations for a visit to Chicago. It's a small space so we went off hours and was able to get seated quickly.

You must try the bacon!

By Jazzgal67 |

My daughter has been raving about eating at this place for many months. After a 90 minute wait, we ordered cheeseburgers with a side of pork belly bacon. The bacon was delicious! The hamburger was very good but it was truly a hamburger that we could’ve eaten anywhere. The atmosphere was very nice and the people are very friendly. It didn’t live up to the hype of being the best burger ever to me. But it was very good.

Must try burger in Chicago

By Bader J |

Hello, The restaurant offer different food other than burgers but the burger stands out, single burger is actually the conventional double cheese burger, the ambiance is busy and could be loud and it’s hard to get a table in case of walking in, so it’s better to book if you can, the staff was great and efficient. I tried the single cheese burger, this is my third time, i noticed in my last couple of visits that because of cooking tens of burgers Patties on one go and preparing the sandwiches together all making sandwiches served not as hot as you want your juicy burger to be, this is my own experience and it’s definitely an iconic burger joint must try once in Chicago.

Best Burgers

By Feekas |

We visited this place for good burgers and we were not disappointed. Burgers and fries what we ordered for diner in this small packed place in Chicago. The burger was just right, not too greasy not over cooked tasted great. The only downside is the long waiting list to get a seat at night, but I guess that proves the place is worth a visit.

Fantastic Service and Delicious Food!

By Hento H |

Every dish was bursting with flavor from beginning to end, and the cuisine was just delicious. Throughout the evening, our server, Luca, was incredibly kind and attentive, and the service was excellent. Both the chicken parmigiana and the seafood risotto that we had were exquisitely prepared and cooked to perfection. The tiramisu, which was light, creamy, and flavorful, was the perfect dessert. Everything was better than we could have imagined! We had a great time here tonight.

Not worth standing in line for

By Dan de Padua |

Seriously overrated, I have to say. The dark interior and furnishings make the place look expensive, but for all the hype, the burger tasted like something from Shake Shack. The fries were, in the end, unremarkable. We got in at 11:00 a.m. on a Tuesday, which was good because I would have hated standing in line for the food I was served.

perfectly tasty!

By Grace58 |

Highly recommended. Paid for parking in nearby lot. Expected wait time 90 minutes, so I planned to explore neighborhood, but a seat at the bar opened in 30 minutes (yay)- text message notification available. Quick service considering how busy it was. Watched organized chaos and spoke with friendly manager while waiting; saw my own meal prepared. Excellent burger w/bacon, fries, salad; no drinks ordered .Learned that there is also Small Cheval in another part of town. Will definitely return.

Good atmosphere if you are willing to queue

By jet7r |

Burgers are certainly good! Not the best I had but the atmosphere adds to it. A bit of a queue to get in so of you're hungry don't expect immediate seating on the weekend.. Wine celectiin was not bad! Good place!

Interesting

By Twinsmom99 |

I’m not a burger eater but my husband said it was a good burger. I had the omelette which was fluffy with roasted peppers. We had the pasty crème dessert which was interesting as well. Glad we tried it. I don’t know that we’d go back.

disappointing - par for Chicago

By Michelle H |

The burger is good, but over hyped and over priced, like so many restaurants in Chicago. We sat at the bar, and the expo was reaching over me throughout the meal (not his fault, but maybe don't shove an extra seat there). I ordered fries, which never arrived, and the server didn't check on us until we were finished with our meal. I genuinely don't understand what all the fuss is about.

So good

By John E |

Took my teens to eat here for a late lunch on our last day in Chicago. My son said the burger was one of the best he's had. I had the crispy hash with duck sauce and it was phenomenal. The waitress even brought me a bone marrow as I had a hard time deciding between the two. If you can sit at the bar and watch the cooks go to town.

Rude hostess, but good food and table service

By Antityco |

First of all the burger was as great as everyone else said. The table side service was excellent and professional. However, the hostess was curt and rude. I first approached her with a question and before I could finish it she barked out to me what their policies were. On top of this they charge a "Covid fee". This is the first time I've seen a restaurant attempt to cash in on the pandemic.

Lives up to the hype. Amazing

By wolverine114 |

Lives up to the hype. Amazing cheese burgers and fries. The bacon is an excellent addition on the burger. The wait is worth it!

Flavor failed Hype

By Pranamama |

While on a 45 minute wait I asked the couple ahead of us on line if they were locals and if it was worth the wait. They assured us if we liked burgers, this was the place and worth the wait. Our burgers did not live up to the hype. They lacked flavor. I’ve had better tasting burgers at a take out drive through. Maybe they are the best burger in Chicago- my sympathies Chicago.

Best burger I’ve ever had

By marisa m |

Wow! Worth the wait, we put our names in, went and had drinks at lazy bird, two hours later we got a text on a Friday night our table was ready - walked over sat at the bar and we were blown away!!! This is a MUST have spot!!! The burger is something I will dream about.

Best cheeseburger in Chicago

By Taylor B |

You wouldn't expect the best cheeseburger in Chicago to be produced at an upscale restaurant/bar that also features chopped chicken liver, roasted bone marrow and a fried house-made bologna sandwich on its menu. But here it is, at Au Cheval, a cheeseburger that is ranked No. 4 in the nation by one discriminating food survey. Located at 800 West Randolph Street, at Halsted, in Chicago's West Loop neighborhood, Au Cheval is a celebrated upscale diner-style restaurant and bar that works with ingredients from bologna to foie gras and a passion for eggs. In other words, it elevates traditional diner fare to another level. And the dimly lit room is special, too, with lots of dark wood paneling and dark leather booths with a big zinc bar wrapped around an open kitchen. What makes Au Cheval's cheeseburger so special? It contains two patties of high quality ground beef or three if you order a double cheeseburger. It is topped with American cheese, Dijonnaise and a few slices of pickles and served on a soft toasted bun. Thick sliced bacon and a sunny-side-up egg are optional add-ons. With an order of fries, you can wash it all down with a root beer float with Berghoff draft root beer and Zarlengo's malted vanilla gelato. For dessert, don't pass up a portion of Zarlengo's gelato, malted vanilla, mint chip and milk chocolate. If you aren't in the mood for a signature cheeseburger, you should try the honey fried chicken with crispy potato hash or hash browns. Au Cheval is open from noon to 10:15 p.m. daily, plenty of time to sample the best cheeseburger in town.

They don't accept reservation and always have a line. Since I was alone, I found myself sitting at the bar and it was mega fast. Good service. I ordered a single cheeseburger and a portion of fries. Everything came fast and warm. Simple and tasty snack. I loved it. Music a little loud (it's a diner). It's worth it

The food was out of this world.

By Alicia S |

The food was out of this world. My husband said it’s the Best Burger he has EVER had and that’s a big deal. The wings were so good. My new favorite drink is the “bees knees”! It was a great food experience for this foodie and her husband. Will definitely go back next time I’m in Chicago. By the way the customer service was excellent!

Cheeseburger

The cheeseburgers here were fantastic. I thought this was a fine French restaurant so when I heard about the burger I had to try it. You will not be disappointed.

Holy Heaven

By Shannon Marie |

The burger is to die for....no joke! The flavor is devine. If I still lived in the city, this place would be a weekly joint. The drinks are limited but we all found something we liked. Oh and don't forget to get a side of fries!

Fantastic restaurant!

By Inga P |

I love this place! Honestly is the best hamburger I have ever tried!! I’m very picky with hamburgers and this is a solid 10. The single burger comes with 2 meats so that’s a lot! I recommend adding the extra of egg and bacon because it’s so good you wont regret it! The hamburger is huge so you could easily get fries and share fries and the burger with someone else. This place is always busy but it’s worth the wait trust me. The French fries are a must as well, it’s pricey like 10 bucks for just the fries but it is worth it. For the single burger and the fries you’ll spend around 40 dollars. I came twice when I was in Chicago! Loved it!

Best Burher in Chicago

By DDorris |

This small restaurant located in the heart of the Fulton district has probably the best ham burger I’ve ever had. I am an almost fifty year old man that loves a good burger, so I write that statement with a bit of credibility. The menu is limited, but when perfection has been achieved, diversity becomes moot. The beef is perfectly seasoned and cooked. The toppings are classic, but expertly proportioned and prepared. The bacon is heavenly. My wife and I ordered a side of the bacon for snacking and topping our burgers and it was the best each of us ever tasted. The atmosphere is cozy and lively. It’s a place where one can let their hair down with a group, or just eat and chat as a couple. I highly recommend Au Cheval. I will be going back.

Outstanding Burger

By Anthony B |

IMO probably the best burger in Chicago. Which unfortunately means I never try anything else on the menu (which looks good). The double burger is actually 3 patties, which with fries is enough. No need to look at starters. On this occasion I got to sit by the pass. This allowed me to enjoy the banter between the staff, all of whom were great fun. Seem like a real team working the kitchen.

Best Burger in America

By Chris H |

I've wanted to come hear Since seeing it win Food Channel's 10 Best Burgers, as the #1 burger in America. It is really a hole in the wall. It's one long room, with a long bar top with the chefs behind it cooking. There's small booths along the other wall. I was lucky to get in at about 15 minute wait due to I was alone a could get squeezed onto the bar. I ordered the Double Cheeseburger ($17) with an egg ($3). The double burger was actually 3 patties. The burger definitely deserves it's #1 ranking. Wow was that burger good. I don't think I needed to chew, I could have let it melt in my mouth. I did not put anything on my burger. I just ate it with the egg and a tomato. It doesn't need anything else. The beef that use is spectacular. Not sure how the do it, but keep it up. The egg was also amazing and oddly pretty. The service was outstanding. From the hostess, to the waitress, to the chefs, and manager they all work flawlessly together to creat a master piece. I sat right next to where all the food goes out and they put on a show. Plus I got to see all the different meals and they all looked amazing. Especially the Fried chicken and surprisingly the salad. Overall a 6 star review. Would I return? I will be very unhappy if I don't.

Be prepared to wait, it's worth it

By Anthony B |

I've never deviated from the double (triple) burger, and don't know why I would. Though on this visit I saw what looked like chicken wings, and very tempting they were. The 45 minute.wait for a stool at the bar goes quickly as there are plenty of shops in the area, and places to have a drink. My only complaint is the amount of salt on the fries.

You have to try it

By Life2Travel |

Over hyped? yes... over priced? yes... but it is still a great burger and you have to try it at least once. Our burgers were hot and juicy and just what we were in the mood for, glad we were able to get in without much of a wait.

Best burger ever!

By Daniela A |

This is the most wonderful burger I have ever had! Along with the fast and great service this is the most delicious burger ever! Try to get early so you don’t have to wait in line! Don’t leave Chicago without trying it!

Deserves all the accolades!!

By Robs’reviews |

Single Cheeseburger - Believe the hype. Juicy, flavorful, excellently cooked—everything a burger should be. Melted cheese, soft bun, and just the right amount of messiness. You’ll wish you didn’t share it!! The bacon is a must order!! My wife isn’t the biggest fan of bacon and we ordered a 2nd side of it!! We also had a great server - make sure to get to Quebec City! The vibe is cool, and the flavors are unforgettable. Au Cheval lives up to its reputation—simply, absolutely delicious.

Bone marrow and beef tallow fried fries= Yes! Burger=meh:( 1 hour wait

By sh51287 |

Bone marrow probably the best I have ever eaten...the Texas toast was perfect accompaniment:) Fries which were so yummy we had to ask what made them taste so good/different. Answer: fried in beef tallow as oil. Hubby disappointed with the burger...more like a smash burger. He was expecting a thick juicy meaty burger. So many people had hyped it up, never thought to ask about the patty type beforehand. And FYI- a single is 2 patties and a double is 3 patties-go figure!?! Also: THEY DO NOT TAKE RESERVATIONS! Expect to wait. Inside is reminiscent of a loud, dark, cramped British pub. Grill is open cooking area in plain view behind bar. Our server was fantastic! Great personality and professionalism. He even took our picture (several poses :)

Vacation

Not sure what the rave is about this place. It’s average at best. I can make a better hamburger at home. Sorry but I just don’t get it. And it’s so expensive. $25 for a hamburger with bacon and an egg on it.

BIGGEST HAMBURGER EVER....

By Laurie K |

We were in the city for a long weekend and we decided to come to Au Cheval as my son raves about the place. We had a wait of an hour and a half as the place is small inside maybe 15 tables. So they tell you they will text you when your table is ready and you have 15 minutes to get back there after you are texted before they give your table away. We sat in the back corner and ordered the double cheeseburgers which is really (3) beef patties with cheese, bacon and an egg on it......you better have a big mouth to get it over this burger it's HUGE. We also had the fries whgich come in a cylinder. The bacon is super thick but so soft and chewy the weirdest bacon I have ever had but sweet and yummy. Our server was Back AM S ??? She was very nice and she kept checking on us as busy as she was. We did ask to move into a booth but there was a bigger party that needed the booth so we stayed put in the corner, a bit cramped but we made it work. Be prepared as we were stuffed to the gills when we walked out OMG big food for sure, was so worth the wait, get there early and put your name in you won't regret it !!! We also did what is called the Chocolate Martini Shot which tasted like chocolate milk and they were yummy, put us over the edge on being full for sure. This owbner also owns several others restaurants throughout the city and I'm told the food in each place is delicious. Be prepared though look at your bill a restaurant surcharge is added to all bills but may be removed upon request. Just extra money they are charging you on top of high tax and tips, things are pricey enough without extra charges

Awesome Food. Worth the wait!

By Andrew Haze |

My wife chose this restaurant after seeing the race reviews. We arrived to a 2 hour wait time. 😱 No problem we put our names in and got cocktails at a nearby bar

fab little spot

By JOHN W |

Up and coming Fulton Market District is full of restaurants, Au Cheval is a little gem. Not much bigger then a train car, lots of character, great service, w/ great food and drinks. Crispy potatoes with duck gravy is worth the CTA trip. The bartender Gavin, is also the manager, makes an excellent margarita and the cold fashion was the best. Somewhat hard to find as it is tucked on the corner and looks to be part of a bigger restaurant next door. Be prepared for a wait, Its worth it

Fried chicken !

By ilovecorndogs |

Fried chicken MIGHT be better than the (delicious) burger Don’t need the bacon or fries, both good not amazing Fried chicken wow. Interior of place is very cool also

Disappointing overly hyped burger

By Frank |

Two burgers, one shared order of fries one beer and a coke, no free refills. Fries and garlicky sauce were good. Burger was nothing special or different. They put this weird tasting stuff on it that is not good. Total was $104. When u pay thru the app they force u to pay 20%or more for a tip. This is not ok, especially when there is no real service provided. Disappointed but glad to know how not amazing and fairly hyped this place is. Go to Kumas instead. So much better and not pocket gouging.

Best burger in town or country...

By wanderlustgirl77 |

You will be hard pressed to find a better burger anywhere. All else will fail to compare. Be sure to get bacon - it’s marvelous. It has a coffee/sugary coating on it. We also prefer to get our burgers “gluten free” style which means they put your burger right in a hashbrown. Oh my!!! Sooo good. Being that they have such good burgers they could short change you on drinks or even the hashbrown but all of it is done so very well. Interesting drink choices and a solid beer list. You’ll wonder if it’s worth the wait but honestly - it really is. There are plenty of places to grab a beer while you wait for your table - they text you when your table is ready....the system lets you check in real time where you are in line. So you can go out and about in the neighborhood while you wait for your mouth watering burgers!!!!

Worth the wait!

By HJ09876 |

We checked this place out on the recommendation of a friend. The roasted bone marrow with beef cheek marmalade was amazing; we weren’t sure if that’d be enough to make a full meal so we ordered that as an appetizer to share and each ordered a sandwich (burger, fried bologna - side note: the bone marrow IS enough to be a meal in itself!). Everything was so incredibly good that we came back a couple nights later for round two (splitting the bone marrow and General Jane’s chicken that time around)! Be prepared for a long wait (we had 1.5 and 2hr waits), but it’s soooo worth it!

Consider booking or going early

By Luis Guimon |

The place was highly recommended to us and it looked very good, but I think that for the same reason, there were a lot of people and the place is not very big, there was a wait of 1 hour, and the truth is that we were already hungry and we couldn't wait, we stayed with the desire, we recommend going early or making a reservation

crowded. noisy and all food delicious

By ElAzul |

this highly rated "every day" restaurant deserves its plaudits. It was crowded out the door when we arrived about 11 am after a 1.4 mile walk at 34F in breezy Chi town. They told my son in law it would be between 30-60 minutes of wait time before we could be seated and they were right on the money at about 35 minutes. All food was very attractive, huge portions and every dish we tried as a party of five was delicious. It was worth the walk but we took an Uber back to the hotel!

Terrible experience

By Cory C |

Love love love their food. I've eaten at this location and New York location multiple time. It's my favorite burger around. The way that I was spoken to tonight was surprising. Out of left field. So bad that the host made sure to let me know that i was on camera! For how bad he spoke to me. He told me to go f myself. I asked about the wait, there was no one behind me, he told me 1 and a half to 2 hours wait, there was no one else there. i said "really!," and he said "go f yourself." As good as the burger is, I will never go there again or any of their affiliate restaurants. I've regularly dined here and at 4 Charles prime, & RH Rooftop, and am surprised by the demeanor of this employee. It's deplorable that they think they can talk to customers that way.

Great food and atmosphere!!

By VegasMEO |

Awesome burger and better bacon. Had to wait about 45 minutes for a table but it was well worth it and the bar next door made the wait okay.

BEST BURGER EVER!!

By Anne C |

Perfect spot for an amazing burger. Casual, superb staff, amazing draft beers! Was best early dinner for a slight hang over- the burger was insane!! Jena is amazing waitress and made us feel welcome and ket us hang out at her table while we waited for train.

Definitely not worth the wait

By Nirolevy |

Good hamburger, but simply not worth a 3 hour wait. Should give people option to reserve a seat and not waste our time waiting for a hyped hamburger.

Still at the top

By Alamills |

As I don’t live in Chicago, I can’t go to Au Cheval except on vacation. So it’s been a while but I can say their burger is still one of the best. Eating outside because of the pandemic was fine with me. Service was just as good.

Amazing Burger Experience

By Santiago F |

The place has an amazing ambience and the food is delicious. It is perfect for a relaxing from reality. For a better experience I recommend sharing ;)

Not the best

By TheDadDiet101 |

We came for the burgers since we are all burger maniacs. Final verdict. The Loyalist is a better burger. The problem with the Au Chevral burger is that the bun is too big and dense. You taste bun and not the meat! Much tastier after taking the top bun off. Still second best in Chicago

Best burger ever!!!

By Khoi N |

This place has been on my list for a long time. Stopped by here for lunch and had to wait almost an hour. If you plan on coming here expect a wait at all times. We ordered the double cheeseburger, roasted marrow bone with beef cheek marmalade and a side of toast. Everything on the burger was delicious from the bun, meat to the egg. The meat was cooked and seasoned perfectly. The bone marrow was amazing and one of the best dishes I've ever had. Very rich in flavor and the combination of the marmalade and buttery toast was heavenly. Overall, this place puts extreme detail into everything that they do. Flavors and textures here are on point. If you are visiting Chicago this is a must wait and dine in restaurant. Seating is very limited and not meant for large groups.

Worth the wait!

By janettekamedula |

There’s always a wait, but for good reason. First of all, a shout out to the host, and Wes, the bartender! They were so kind, and absolutely made my Au Cheval experience outstanding! The food is obviously incredible, you can’t go wrong with any of it. Great craft beer and cocktail selection! Try to leave room for dessert!

I initially didn't understand the line at the door, but after eating the burger it was explained. Too good. Waitress was not very happy to receive part in cash, part on card.

Tasty giant burger

By CHENG Y |

I had a cheese burger with an egg, it was just like what I expected: fatty, salty and huge. It's perfect for ppl who are hungry or fancy for a bite after a few drinks. The fries are great too, crispy and fresh. For me the taste is a bit heavy but surely a true American flavor. We got there around 7pm and waited for 90 mins to be seated. Strongly suggest to reserve in advance or put yourself on the waiting list as early as possible.

Worth the hype

By Bharati M |

The wait was worth it and it lived up to the hype. You cannot leave Chicago without trying it. Sit at the bar if u can, it’s actually fab to watch all the chefs moving in action in complete coordination

A Touch of Dill

By vspagnolo |

What a lovely meal we had at Au Cheval Restaurant. Our family has very diverse tastes and there was something on the menu for everyone. Each dish had unique and distinct flavors with fresh herbs and seasonings. What stood out most was the hint of dill in the the Matzah Ball soup. The waitstaff was incredibly flexible with our request for seating and the service as friendly as the food was delicious.

It's worth the wait

By Taylor B |

Legend has it that a customer once waited five hours for a table at Au Cheval and said later that it was totally worth it. He must have waited for the double cheeseburger. Located at 800 West Randolph Street, at Halsted, in Chicago's West Loop neighborhood, Au Cheval is an upscale diner-style bar and restaurant with a passion for eggs, an open kitchen that works with ingredients from bologna to foie gras, and has an impeccable track record for producing the top-rated burger in Chicago. Check it out. Whenever you see a survey of the top 10 burgers in the city, Au Cheval usually is No. 1. And people literally line up for hours to taste it, to see if it's as good as advertised. It is. It consists of two beef patties with melted American cheese, pickles and dijon between a buttery bun. Add bacon and/or a fried egg for emphasis. With an order of fries. While I expressed delight with my burger, my wife enjoyed a plate of crispy potato hash with scrambled eggs and bacon and toast. Don't pass up dessert. Love the root beer float with Berghoff draft root beer and Zarlengo's malted vanilla gelato, a tribute to the the drive-in restaurants of the 1950s. My wife preferred a bowl of Zarlengo gelato, malted vanilla, mint chip and milk chocolate with hot fudge, a tribute to the 1950s and Hart's Drug Store in our hometown of Blue Island, Illinois, a Chicago suburb. Au Cheval is open from 11:30 to 10:30 Monday through Saturday and from 11:30 to 9:30 on Sunday, plenty of time to savor a double cheeseburger.

Person on door needs a personality transplant.

By TrevskiY |

The person managing the door needs to get off their power trip. Service inside is great. Food is very tasty. Person managing the door is totally weird and rude! We arrived early, told them we had a party of 6 and they said it would be a 45-60 minute wait. We were fine with this and went for a drink next door. We received a text telling us we had 15 minutes to get our table. No problem, we go and tell them we’re ready but one of our party is unsure if they can make it. Their response was, “We need your whole party to seat you but your table isn’t ready anyway.” We were confused. Did we need the 6th person or was our table not ready or both? We waited. No update. So we asked if we could be seated. Our table still wasn’t ready. Why send us a text telling us to come get our table? Our friend couldn’t make it so we told them we had 5. “We need all six or you can’t be seated.” They were so rude and dismissive with no care whilst so many groups just entered and loads of tables were empty. We waited 30 minutes. Eventually we’re told that our table is ready. Why be so rude and treat people like this? The food is good but is it worth being abused?
