Early dinner

By krk2san |

Nice atmosphere and really good food. We had onion soup and steak with lavender fries On top they had good Belgian beer Recommend this place for sure

Very good.

By Pasha2 |

Food was excellent and staff were very nice. If you like tarte flambé, it was authentic and well liked by both my wife and daughter. Would come back again.

This restaurant seems abandoned

By caudronhugues |

First of all the menu has changed and the quality is no longer at all good for the service there is always the same server for lunch and he does his best

Tip begging server

By Trésor I |

Pathetic! I have previously taken my girlfriend here for anniversaries and other little celebrations but tonight was just scandalous. The food was good as always, but after we had left, the server followed my girlfriend and her friend out and dared to ask for more tips. I am a server myself and I have NEVER seen something like this before. Tips are a the little extra you are to receive when the service was done right (YOU ARE NOT ENTITLED TO IT), and if you believe that bringing stuff form A to B & pouring a glass to the rim entitles you for more, than you may have to talk to whoever is paying you to be there, get a degree, or move on to another industry! We ended up giving him another 2 bucks for his pathetic but now after second thought, I will come down personally if her card is going to be charged for anything more than the food. Never again & au revoir for sure!

Wonderful dinner

By varulv |

Appetizer: bone marrow, which I have never seen in a restaurant menu before. The bone was split in two lengthwise and it tasted just like it should, if not even better, with crisp parsley. Duck breast, crust with honey, done just right, perfect vegetables, asparagus, snap beans, broccoli.

Expected More

By Great2TravelCA |

While I read many good revues about this French Bistro, one person speaking French does not make a French restaurant. While our steak au poivre and fish were cooked well, overall seasoning and the Foie Gras was much less than expected. Staff was very friendly and service was good. Would we return again? Maybe.

My favorite french food...

By Greekodyssey |

Great prices, delicious food, nice atmosphere. My only reasons for not giving it a 5 is that the red wine is served too warm (room temp doesn't mean san diego room temp) and one of the waitresses keeps openly flirting with my husband. It was a compliment the first time, the second time it was rude. Try the coq au vin - i'm not a fan of braised meats and i love this dish. Also the stuffed chicken breast. yumm.

Fab food, great prices excellent service

By tusonbird |

8 of us for dinner on a Friday night. One of the specials was cassoulet - excellent. Pate appetizer has three pates-nice choices. Ordered everything from steak to mussels to soup & salad and everyone was very pleased with selections. Portions are generous - small order of mussels is pretty large. No room for dessert - too full! Wine is fairly priced. Service was excellent - attentive but not intrusive.

Warm atmosphere, excellent food

By Breffni B |

My family gathered for a New Year's Day dinner and had just a lovely experience. The waitress was patient and helpful. Our reservation was at 4:15 so there was almost no crowd and things went very smoothly. An hour later it was pretty busy. For appetizers we ordered escargot, moules, French onion soup, lobster bisque, and a few salads. The moules were the most tender I have ever tasted! All the flavors were wonderful. For dinner, I had the steak frites which was perfectly cooked and a nice looking hanger steak with bernaise sauce, salad, and fries. Perfect. Also on the table was filet mignon, seabass, pasta with rabbit and a few others. Everyone was giving high praise towards their meals and the atmosphere and vibe. Our bill was $250 which for 5 people included wine for all, all of the appetizers, main entrees, and dessert (a flaming crepe dish that was to die for). Great value! If you're searching for a great French restaurant this one won't disappoint. We miss the exquisite Farmhouse cafe which was on Adams but closed. Blue Boheme is also nice and at times we visit Hexagone which we also enjoy. But I'd have to say that so far this is our favorite for an overall pleasurable dining experience. Enjoy!

Good Neighborhood Choice

By Ted M |

Went for dinner with a 7 pm Saturday evening reservation. Peak time, was busy but emptied out by the time we finished. Nice table layout, linen napkins. Good attentive service. Small reasonably priced wine list. Tried the French Onion Soup. Good size, a bit sweet (maybe from caramelizing the onions which could have been cooked a bit longer). Tasty cheese topping. Complimentary bread was nice, crusty, fresh. Mains were "Lapin a la Moutarde" (rabbit) with noodles and veggies. Nice flavors. Second was the daily "Venisson" special. Full flavor, tender meat cubes served over mashed potatoes in a rich sauce. Both dishes were large. Good Hillcrest dining option.

Wonderful French food in Hillcrest

By surfland_boulder |

We had a wonderful lunch at this beautiful french restaurant in Hillcrest. We flatbread and french onion soup to start which was perfect. We followed this up with a chicken baguette. This is one over the better restaurants we have eaten at in Hillcrest.

never tried the food the staff was so rude!!

By SanDiegoHootie |

Finally getting a chance to try this restaurant , we were greeted by an uninterested rushed person, who refused to let us sit at a small table for four. Now I understand if it's busy, but the place was half empty, and the Sunday "rush" was over! I asked again.. "are you sure we can't sit here...? The professional response was.." we save it in case people come in!" I guess the two people actually IN the restaurant didn't count! Then....while sitting next to three empty tables, still dirty and not bussed I was a little annoyed...but willing to hang in there....but when NO ONE came over to even take drink orders etc...we left. Funny thing a couple left just prior to us for the same thing!!!! Walked down and dropped good $$ at another place.....Too many great places to bother with this place.

"Do you enjoy being treated like a third class citizen?"

By hac0y7 |

We stood for a few minutes waiting to be greeted. I looked over the menu. The waiter geabbed it out if my hand. Extremely rude. It's a Sunday, all restaurants are prepared for the lunch rush. I haven't had French cuisine in a while. Unfortunately after receiving a table and never offered any drinks. We sat over ten minutes waiting and starving. We decided to walk. Make sure you are not hungry.

A real gem!

By Melissa C |

Au Revoir was the perfect choice for a quiet, feel-good lunch with my hardworking daughter. We stole away for an hour, but the ambience of this sweet French bistro and the attentiveness of its staff made us feel like we were settling in for a long, relaxing break. The menu took us by surprise. We each thought we were going to have a light little salad and call it a day, but delicious offerings caught our eye and we took extra time really reading through the list of delicious, mouth-watering tar tines, baguettes, mussels, salads and more. I appreciate a place that knows how to treat duck, and Au Revoir is such a place. The duck was tender and juicy and flavorful and fell away from the bone just right. Everything on the plate was special, right down to the freshest leaf of spring greens. They make great coffee as well, and here's the real gem for those who know how to value it: the cream for the coffee left a beautiful coating of white on the creamer! Uh-huh. You know what I'm talking about. Real cream! Now that's special! I can't say enough about the service which was careful, thoughtful and attentive while never intrusive. We'll be back!

Should have been five stars, but…

By Randall |

Food amazing. Service was superb. Atmos was a delight. Overall a great meal and a fun time. The Downsize… the table was grimy when I sat diown. The side plates literally stuck to the table and when I used my napkin to wipe the table it came up with black grime. Not appealing. Other than this a fantastic time and we do reccomend at his place for anyone that loves Fench food.

Many great menu choices

By S B |

Located in a strip mall, it is not a romantic venue, however once inside the atmosphere is pleasant, it is not noisy like so many trendy restaurants, and the staff is very attentive to you. We ordered two dishes, the lamb and the chicken, and both were wonderful. For such a small restaurant, it had a large wine list, many of them by-the-glass.

authentic bistro experience

By paul b |

my wife and i had dinner last evening after passing by one of our favorite restaurants and seeing the long line. we had just had dinner at a local french restaurant a couple of weeks ago and were underwhelmed with the entrees. au revoir was definitely not underwhelming. the moules in white wine and whole grain mustard sauce were spectacular and the rabbit was plentiful and quite tasty. the brioche we shared for dessert was delicious and rich. service was very attentive and extremely timely. we will be going back again sometime soon!

Good French food in the heart of Hillcrest

By Mark N |

Had dinner with several friends (one in town from the UK,) and had a very nice evening. We started with a French Pinot Noir which was very reasonably priced and quite drinkable. For my salad I went with the Caesar, which was good, but nothing special. Several of my friends had the French Onion soup and they were very pleased. For my entree I had the salmon and scallops. Delicious! Especially the scallops. Just the right texture and very flavorful. Other entrees that evening included the rack of lamb and the bouillabaisse. I didn't get a chance to try them but my friends were very satisfied. Will definitely go back.

An oasis of quiet and flavour in a busy district.

By lateleapagada |

My wife and I had just seen a film at the Hillcrest Landmark cinemas and were wondering where to go for an early dinner. We were driving by, the name plus our curiosity about their French cuisine helped us decide to park and try the place. We were not disappointed, the quiet ambiance in an otherwise busy and noisy neighbourhood, the varied French wine list, and the varied menu made a very good first impression. Our food choices confirmed our first impression. We had the onion soup, amongst the best we've had. The salad with red wine poached pears was extraordinary, and the steak frites sauce bernaise was tasty and filling. The creme brûlée was fair, but could have been a touch warmer and without the glazed sugar. Service was promp, helpful, and discrete. Price was fair. We will return and further explore their menu.

Fantastic Dinner

By Ric O |

We got here close to 9:00 not completely sure that they were open. Greeted by a very nice fellow who took us to our table. My partner had the beef stew and I had the salmon. Not being a huge fish fan I wasn't sure if I had done the right thing or not BUT, it was sheer perfection. My partners stew was delicious. The restaurant was clean and well appointed. The service was incredible. We didn't feel rushed. It was a great meal. Thanks guys. We really appreciate it.

Great Bistro!

By Silvia1700 |

My son and I, love this place!!! Great food and wonderful staff. Actually, very charming ...we love to hear their English with French accent(we also have the opportunity to practice and improve our French). "Magnifique"! We are "brunch people", so we stick with the breakfast type of food. The French toast is great. I had all the omelets and my favorite is "Ratatouille". Of course, love the Croque Monsieur and Croque Madame. The price is very fair. They have inside and outside sitting. Check it out!!!

Delicious

By tricialew75 |

I would like more on the menu but everything we have had has been scrumptious. It is relaxed, plenty of good wine to choose from, love the French accents from the staff, the food is excellent. We will return many times-everything from the soup to dessert is always outstanding.

Always wonderful, true French Bistro fare

By Richard V |

Sometimes I just can't get beyond appetizers for dinner. Their French onion soup: OMG delish. Their escargot (I know not everybody loves escargot), the garlic butter and snails are great! And, then you use your remaining baguette to finish sopping up the butter. Ahhhhh! Their salmon and scallops entrée, c'est magnifique. Daily specials are invariably good. Our fave French restaurant in uptown. And, that's saying a lot, because the Parc Bistro in Bankers Hill is fantastic as well. But Au Revoir is just a nudge better. And, at a slightly lower price point.

Good, not great

By RedBlkBlu |

We visited this restaurant on a whim after driving around Hillcrest looking for a bite. The menu looked appealing so we decided to give it a try. We started with escargot and it was lovely, although the puff pastry was a bit overdone. I had the croque Madame and it was decent. My friend had pistachio crusted halibut with asparagus and the fish was certainly overlooked. The coffee was very rich and the milk was steamed, which was a nice touch. The service, although slow at first, became better through the meal. I will probably not be back, but wouldn't oppose to eating here again.

STILL GOOD ... BUT NOT AS GOOD AS IT WAS

By Cary L |

I like going out to French restaurants and my previous experience here a couple of years ago was very good, so I gave it another go. It's still good, but a bit uneven. The onion soup (a good point of reference for any French restaurant) was pretty good, the fried calamari was very good, as was the creme brulee with lavender. But the duck confit with peppercorn sauce was kind of a weird flavor (they should stick stick to natural juices or orange sauce), and the mussels also had an odd aftertaste. In other words, the entrees, which should be the highlight of the meal, were a bit disappointing. I would still give it a chance, but be prepared for an uneven experience.

Excellent Service and Good Food

By HelenaGuerra |

Tip: a good place to have a meal if you are visiting Hillcrest area Pros: delicious food, fresh ingredients, good value for money, extremely helpful and nice server We had - Bread with aioli - Calamari Delicious - Mariniere Moules with fries Good - Coc au vin Very good - Creme brulee Tasty

Great French restaurant in Hillcrest

By AndySanDiego |

As Hillcrest locals, my wife and I try to eat nearby and support our community. Since it had been a while that we had eaten at Au Revoir, we decided to go back. From walking in and then all the way through to paying the bill and leaving, the service was attentive and friendly without being smothering. We started off with salads. My wife had the Salade du bistro (house salad), and I had the Salade de poulpe grille (charred octopus). Both were very good, and the octopus was extremely tender and flavorful. They're good sized salads, so you could easily split one. For the entrees, my wife had the Boeuf bourguigon, and I had the Steak au poivre. The stew was delicious and enough for leftovers to take home - (mixed into scrambled eggs the following morning provided a rather tasty start to the day)! My steak was grilled to perfection, but sadly, was to good to provided any leftovers for the next day - I polished it all off. To end the meal, we split a Brioche bread pudding (that's not the exact name for it, though). Being masters at making bread pudding at home, we're always on the lookout for a restaurants' to try, and this didn't disappoint. Sated, we pushed ourselves away from the table and waddled out to our car. Oh... by the way, don't let the little strip mall fool you; the food and service is excellent!

What a French Gem!!!!!!

A little déçu ... disappointed

By courtney a |

My husband and I were looking forward to trying this restaurant in the Hillcrest neighborhood of San Diego, after we read reviews on Yelp & Trip Advisor. We are both big fans of French bistro food. Unfortunately, we were disappointed and not really impressed by the food - I ordered the onion soup, which is typically a favorite of mine, and found the broth to be sort of funny, off-tasting, and overloaded with soggy onions, and burnt cheese/bread on the top. The bistro salad was flavorless, except for the candied walnuts. My husband had the steak frites, which was just ok - a smallish piece of meat for the price. The wait staff wasn't friendly, and were on their phones behind the counter a few times while we were trying get their attention. They had only 1 rose wine to choose from (which is odd considering the venue) and it was average. We will not be back.

Our favorite for special celebrations

By SandraF63 |

We love Au a Revoir and have never been disappointed! Mussels and lavender fries, duck, pork, cheeses, chocolate mousse, wines - whatever we order, no matter the time, it's amazing food!

Great Restaurant

By RoncLaz |

Food was delicious and out of the world but had a little bit of wait for service! Waited quite a bit for check. Had to get up and ask the waiter finally.

European food and service

By Cardiotron |

Great food, authentic french. Unfortunately the service is french-style too, they take forever! We sat for nearly 20 minutes waiting for the check before we finally flagged someone down-who knows how long it would have been. The food however worth it-nothing disappointed. The deserts were divine. The outdoor dining is in the parking lot-but inside it seems very french bistro-esque.

They lie

By Expedition223967 |

SayI just hate being lied to, just tell me the price and I’ll decide. On postmates the order was $15, but I was charged 23.!they blame pastmAtes .Postmates blaims them

Authentique French Restaurant with traditional dishes

By Alain L |

I am French and I also cook French cuisine, so finding a real French restaurant that is not a pale copy of what I am used to in France is hard to find. I go there regularly and sometimes with my French students. "Au Revoir Bistro" is an authentique French restaurant with a variety of classics dishes prepared in the traditional way, as it should be. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is because I believe that the price is a little bit over what it should do (after you have to pay 20% tip on top of this) when you consider the quantity the give you.

Cute bistro, delicious French food

By Tishlf |

I loved au revoir. The service was good but the food was heavenly. Try the steak and fries, the fish, the mussels, or the eggs Benedict, if you visit for Sunday brunch. Everything is yummy and not pricy at all.

New name, still worth the trip

By koalatraveler |

We ate at La Vaca, that was in this same space, many times when we lived in San Diego from 2002 to 2005. Always good, occasionally brilliant. Back in town for a visit, we decided to try Au Revoir for a large lunch. Greeted nicely. Seated outside (small space, but nice). Excellent mixed pate plate to start. Spinach salad as my main; duck tasty, spinach fresh,m dressing perfect. She had warm goat cheese salad w poached egg. Waiter was very good. One order mistake, immediately correct with a smile. Can't wait to go back.

Great Food, Disappointing Service

By ATBster |

This was my first visit to this neighborhood spot and, while I love French food in the bistro style, Au Revoir could be really fantastic if the service was not so disrupted. Five of us gathered for a birthday dinner, not an unmanageable number of guests. Escargot, pate, delicious soup, and ... my grenouilles delivered late (they seem to have forgotten about it). All of the appetizers were tasty, but it would have been nicer to have them brought to the table at the same time. Fast forward to the entree. Duck confit, braised lamb shank, tartine, and...my surf 'n turf delivered without the surf. Back to the kitchen and another wait watching everyone else enjoy. It all came together at dessert (pudding, creme brulee, and mousse au chocolate) all a hit and we all ate together. Will I give them another shot? Of course. Maybe it was the Chargers' loss to Denver that disrupted the service and vibe. There is a very nice, albeit limited, wine selection and the pricing is more than fair. There is even a parking lot where your ...carma...can be good.

Wonderful French Bistro

By TheRealDesertFox |

The old standbys you expect plus some unusual menu items seldom seen. We had the veal stew with mustard and the mussels with choritzo and cream. Both were fantastic. Salad of endive, blue cheese and sliced apple was very tasty. Good selection of reasonably priced french and American wines, with good advice from the lovely French owner. As this is our last night in town, we are returning!

EXCELLENT BISTRO FOOD

By Cary L |

This restaurant delivers solid French bistro food at reasonable prices, with excellent service. From the onion soup to the mussels and duck confit, it was all delicious and well-prepared. And the bread pudding dessert was fantastic. The only negatives are that the restaurant's interior is kind of plain, without much of an ambience, and parking is very limited since it shares space with other businesses in a small strip mall. Otherwise, it's all good and well worth checking it out.

Was I in the same restaurant?

By Connie S |

Very disappointed with our dinner. Came New Year's Day. We have been here many times and the food and service was always great. Tonight was a bad experience. I ordered the Lobster Bisque soup and found it too fishy tasting. Ordered the Ceser's salad and received the house salad instead. I accepted it and it was very good. The lavender fries did not have lavender in them, or so little you couldn't taste them. We have had them many times and these were not the same. I ordered the Tarte Flambee aux onions. Was advised they were out of the tarte and would serve on a baguette. I said ok, but the caramelized onions were not - they were raw and there was no Gruyere cheese at all. I scraped off the onions and ate some of the bread and bacon. I did complain to the waiter but the item was not taken off the bill. My husband ordered the pork osso bucco. The meat was excellent, but no tomatoes or pea vine to be found which were in the description. I ordered water and my husband iced tea. The waiter brought both of us water and charged us $1.00 each without letting us know. Tasted just like tap water served in a glass bottle. I don't think we will ever come back again.

Birthday dinner with friends.

Excellent traditional French food. Very nice atmosphere with fast, friendly, service. Menu selection limited to about six traditional items. Very popular restaurant in Hillcrest area.

Au Revoir Bistro in Hillcrest

By YogaGirl25 |

Are you looking for a quaint, lovely, French dining experience. This place is for you. If you go on the weekends...brunch is great. You have French servers so practice your French! Besides learning a new French word or two, the meals are extraordinary. The sauces and herbs are the best. If you are vegetarian or a meat eater. This is a great place to dine.

Bistro Extrodinair

By LMA942 |

Nate and I had dinner Saturday night at Au Revoir Bistro. Thank you Salon Antoine for the recommendation. We both agreed that it was the best meal we have had since we have been hear in San Diego. We started with the duck confit foie gras, then we both had the SAUMON ET ST JACQUES Seared atlantic salmon, diver sea scallops, roasted fingerling potatoes, brocolinis and creamy leek sauce. This was followed by us sharing the Bourbon Brioche Bread Pudding with vanilla gellato. Our dear friends, Mike & Jenny Jenny Freeman Sparks who love bread pudding as much as we do would have loved this. I can't wait to go back and experience more of their awesome menu. As a side note the prices were very reasonable for everything on their menu and it was a very casual atmosphere.

Great service

By MsWiley57 |

Stopped here to grab a quick nibble and glass of wine before catching a movie in the area. Loved the octopus salad and calamari. Just wish they offer anything other than tartar sauce with the calamari. The vinaigrette on the Saad was so light but very flavorful. Definitely coming back for dinner. Great to have off street parking available.

Always a hit - Great food, wonderful service and sooooo cute and cozy

By CindyClarkBar |

I brought an out-of-town guest to Au Revior for a nice dinner with great food and quiet ambiance, suitable for a good long chat. It was a hit from the moment we walked in the door on a Monday evening. Server gave good recommendations on wine and excellent suggestions for our mains. Friend ordered the salmon with two large sea scallops, fingerling potatoes, and delish sauteed spinach. I had the scrumptious butternut squash ravioli (sometimes it can be a bit too sweet at other restaurants, but this dish was perfectly prepared.) We both raved so much about our dishes, we ended up sharing and both were divine. Great ambiance, wonderful service, and really, really great food. Three days later my friend was still raving about that dinner.

Great as usual

By Happiness177643 |

It has been over a year since we dined at Au Revoir. It is still a great place for dinner, at a very reasonable price. The priced fixed menu is a great value. Great values on the wine list. We will be back soon. Service was very professional. Thank you for a fine dining experience.

DISAPPOINTING

By Cary B |

We decided to try this restaurant on our 30th anniversary, hoping for something a little bit special although not expensive. We both ordered the steak with lavender fries. The accompanying bread was dry and tasteless. The steaks were tough and tasteless (except for the garlic). The fries, which I generally don't care much for, were good. The salad was comprised entirely of lettuce, so wasn't very interesting. When the waiter asked about our meals, I said that I hadn't cared for mine. His response was "OK." Our response to that was to leave a smaller-than-normal tip and to decide we would never return. Others had apparently chosen to do the same, as the restaurant was nearly empty. Quel dommage!

Charming neighborhood bistro

By Marcia K |

Stopped by here for a light lunch. Charming place. French Onion Soup was outstanding! Came in small($5) or large ($8). For our entree, I had the small modules for $9 and my husband had the large order for $16. They were good but not fabulous. They also had a very interesting brunch menu on this Sunday at 1 pm but we didn't want eggs/crepes. Would come again for French Onion Soup, without a doubt

Excellent brunch experience!

By cblaiz |

This place is Hillcrest's best kept brunch secret. We happened upon this restaurant after being turned off by long wait times at other popular uptown establishments. Au Revoir welcomed us with no wait time, great service and delicious food. The French toast was amazing and the prices of most brunch entrees were around $10 or less . What a deal for this savory French food! I will be back soon and also want to try their lunch and dinner. Our waiter Rober was a charming garçon from Lyon with the best little accent, great attitude and excellent service. I can't wait for my next meal here.

Quality Meal - Friendly Service

By Beverlitza |

AU REVOIR BISTRO is the place to go for a quality meal and good bottle of wine in a casual atmosphere. The wait staff is friendly and very knowledgeable. The serving sizes are just right and the food delicious. My husband particularly likes their French onion soup, while I am in love with the lobster risotto. Will return soon!

Good Old Fashioned French Cooking

By SantaFeBenedetti |

If you long for the Julia Child days of classic French cooking, this is your place! Excellent food and service in a relaxed atmosphere and at moderate prices. Good wine selection, too.

Disappointing evening

By AndySanDiego |

For many years, Au Revoir has been one of my go-to restaurants for French food. It typically delivers good food with matching service. However, the other night, the food and service were subpar at best. I understand many businesses are understaffed, and it appeared that Au Revoir was the night we visited, but if you are knowingly short-staffed and the tables should expect much longer than normal wait times, CONVEY THAT TO THE GUESTS. A good way to turn guests against you is to remain silent if a restaurant is having an off night. Communication and an offer of a complimentary dessert/appetizer/glass of wine can go a long way to appease an otherwise bad situation. When the food was eventually brought out, one of the soups was barely warm, and it was returned to the kitchen to be heated. The returned soup was slightly warmer than the original, but not by much. Due to a malfunction in the kitchen, the dining room began to fill with smoke. Doors were opened to allow the room to clear. Unless we asked, I'm not sure if we would have been told why the dining room was filling up with smoke. Overall a disappointing evening.

Good bye forever

By Oliver S |

“Au revoir” is French for “Good Bye, or Until the Next time”. Well, in our case it was first time, last time! Fresh out of screening La La Land in Landmark Hillcrest, we plan to have lunch in an Italian place nearby, but run, by chance, into Au Revoir. The French portion of my blood (I'm a mutt!) makes me always wanting to taste French cuisine, even if I know that I'd be disappointed 95% of the time. This time is no exception. The board with pates is reasonably good but the Coquilles St Jacques au gratin, which we specified we are going to share, arrive without any utensils. Besides being too bland yet too rich. And overstuffed with mushrooms, I guess mushrooms are cheaper than clams... The wine we order arrives by substitute and we accept it, due to lack of choices: for a French place, this restaurant features too many Californian and too few French wines. The bread:supermarket quality. The worst surprise are the Moules Provencales. The best quality of Cuisine Provencale is that they cook with fresh ingredients ONLY. Mussels Provencales are supposed to be mussels, fresh tomatoes, garlic, basil, olive oil and wine. Mussels Provancale a l'Aurevoir arrive at the table with mushrooms (once again, the Chef must have something for mushrooms), no trace of garlic of basil, onions and some white substance that looks like feta cheese. The whole thing is watery and bland. Horrible. On top of that, the portion “to share” arrives without and plates and when we ask for some, we get bread size plates. Oh, well. Our Elf-dressed bus girl practices a wide range of face grimaces to meet each of our demands and the waiter, well, he's just making sure he smiles at everything, as if this would do it right... There will be no “Au Revoir” for us, for sure!

C'est très génial ici.

By TomS214 |

Smallish, comfortable place for a reasonably priced but very tasty dinner out. The food is quite nice, there's a very decent wine selection and the service is friendly. Host and servers are usually French or French-speaking (though you don't have to be). I love the trout dish but have enjoyed everything I've tried here. An added perk: this isn't one of those restaurants where you'll have difficulty hearing the conversation. Noise level is not at all out of control and that provides an atmosphere that's more relaxed than most places. Probably not the best place to bring children.

Whimsical and Unpretentious

By Kurt G |

This was small, intimate bistro in the European mode with a wonderful array of classic french county cuisine to which I can relate. I had the hanger steak and fries done in the french style. Lovely touches such as lavender oil and those wonderful thin fries. I also enjoyed sampling the beef bourguigon, braised beef shanks and mussels. Whats not to like? Simple and savory won me over. I will return.

ooooh, la, la... delicious food with a French accent

By Steve W |

Looking for a French bistro with a talented chef? The Au Revoir Bistro will more than meet your taste expectations. This restaurant is new to the San Diego dining scene. My wife and I and two other couples celebrated a special occasion together on a Tuesday evening at the cafe. The evening was the kind you like to spend with friends -- lots of laughter, tasty food, and no push to leave. The dress code was casual dressy -- no coats or ties, although neither would feel out of place. Now for the fun part... Each individual escargot ($7.50 for the order of 6) was topped with a tasty puff pastry cap. The Caesar salad (($6.25) was crispy-fresh and lightly dressed. My wife and I each ordered a house specialty -- Mushroom ravioli ($11.50) -- which was obviously delicately prepared by hand. Very nice presentation and highly recommended! Another couple shared the salmon special ($18.50) and a petite salad ($6.25) -- again, the entree was delicious. The remaining couple shared a calamari appetizer ($5.50), a summer salad ($9.50), and an order of French fries ($4.50). Obviously not a table of big eaters -- which is why the chef hit a homerun with plates that highlighted taste. After deciding she still had room for dessert, my wife ordered the chocolate decadence cake with fresh raspberries, blueberries, and whipped cream. Oooooh, la, la... All six of us ended up enjoying the delicious end to a an enjoyable evening. One final note... We brought a special bottle of wine with us for this special occasion. I very much appreciated the restaurant hostess waiving the corkage fee for our table. The restaurant obviously appreciates return business! Total bill for the evening (not including tip): $112 for the six of us!

A very pleasant surprise. Indoor and outdoor seating. Very nice and friendly staff. The food was very good and full of flavor. Great selection and nice dessert menu. A five star yum yum.

Love this place

By Susan M |

We enjoy this bistro and take visitors there frequently. The menu is not huge but the food is always good (don't miss the lavender fries). It's relatively quiet compared to other bistros, so we can hear each other when we chat. We especially enjoy the French onion soup, but everything we have tried has been good. The wine selection is good as well--it's nice to see a Sancere on the menu. Good French food but not super-expensive.

EXTREME DISSAPPOINTMENT!

By Kumonski |

This place USED TO BE GOOD; NOT ANY MORE! Service was horrible; waited for over an hour for a simple sandwich and the scallop dish. Observed customers being waited on; orders taken from those whom arrived after us. Same diners ate and left before us. Waiter ignored us, and when asked about the delay, he argued, "it hasn't been an hour"! Then when the food arrived, he pointed to the scallop dish and said, "that takes a LONG TIME TO PREPARE"! WRONG! Scallops are one of the quickest food items to cook! Insult to aggravation; chicken had no flavor; scallops had no flavor! OVERALL, DON'T GO HERE!!!

Cute French bistro. Go hungry!

By Live2traveldaworld |

Away from the tourist traps of downtown, this cute little French bistro in Hillside is charming and filling. The menu has traditional French favorites including mussels, lamb, escargot and rabbit. A fine selection of wine, cute atmosphere and friendly service topped off a pleasant night. The portions are large so be prepared to eat. The escargot is delicious and garlicky. The scallops and salmon had a lot going on but was tasty. We had no room to even consider dessert.

Bienvenue Bistro!!

By fdkmd |

Small bistro in the center of Hillcrest (former La Vache restaurant) offers a variety of well prepared French dishes at a very reasonable price. Try the prix fixe menue on Tuesdays for $30 PP. I had escargot for an appetizer (you may replace it for salad or soup if eating snails gross you out), grilled flank steak with their signature French fries for an appetizer, and Crème brûlée for dessert. $30 for a bottle of French Malbec is reasonable at any restaurant. The setting although not very sophisticated is quite charming.

Epic fail

By Nancy882 |

I went last night and the service was appalling. I can only guess that the kitchen forgot to cook my plate, because my three dinner companions were served and the waiter walked away. Somewhere between 7-10 minutes after my friends were served I went to the kitchen window where the waiter was (he had not be back to check on us) and I asked where my food was. He told me that it was on it way. One table of two and a solo diner were served. After nearly ten MORE minutes I was finally served. One friend was completely finished and the other two were 3/4 finished. When I asked to speak with the manager, I was told there was not one on duty (no surprise) and in fairness I was not charged for my meal. This is further proof that terrible service can truly ruin good (not great) food.

LOBSTER and CHAMPAGNE!

By Johnny Trekkie |

LOBSTER... CHAMPAGNE... BRUNCH... Three of my favorite things combined into one! CHAMPAGNE...$12 Unlimited Mimosas. A single glass is $7, so you'll definitely want to spend the extra $5. We ended up drinking 4 bottles of champagne between the 4 of us. Needless to say, we went for a long walk around Hillcrest before driving anywhere. LOBSTER...$11 for a 3 egg scramble with up to 5 ingredients, and lobster happens to be of the choices! My other ingredients: mushrooms, brie, steak, and truffle shavings...a freaking exotic and delicious egg scramble that only set me back $11. This also comes with sides of potatoes and fresh fruit. Did I mention it was only $11? I also tried my friend's escargot($9 for 6), which I thought I would hate but learned that I love these chewy, garlicky, and buttery snails, yum! The mussels($16 large) here are also fabulous too. BRUNCH...I've been living in San Diego since 1998, and I've only now discovered fabulous French bistro...I'm definitely comeback here again!

Felt So Special

By vagabondginger |

This place was recommended to me by a local otherwise it is off the beaten path and rather nondescript from the outside. Because of the 2020 summer of the pandemic I was looking for a special place for my birthday and this was it. Outside seating along the building between a railing and sidewalk. This is authentic French cuisine and it took me back to a birthday I once shared with my daughter in Paris. Started with the buttery garlic escargots that were topped with crispy pastry puffs. I wouldn't let him take the tray away when my baguette arrived as I wanted to sop up every drop of this rich sauce. Also enjoyed the Grand Moules Marinieres in the garlic and wine broth for more sopping up. The Lavende Frites with rosemary are delicious with the champagne. The bottomless mimosas meant a carafe of OJ which I drank separately and then finished off the whole bottle of champagne with my meal. My server Sergio was attentive and surprised me with a lovely chocolate mousse with a strawberry rose for dessert. The presentation and service was impeccable. It was a special meal and a lot of food but I was on foot so able to walk afterwards. Because of the pandemic and the need for outdoor dining I did make a reservation. Additional tables have now been set up in the parking lot. Loved supporting this family business.

Lunch/Brunch review

By Suzanne s |

We had the best time at our brunch on Sunday 2/09/2020. The server was very pleasant and had small talk which was awesome. WE did not feel rushed at all. We had a glass of wine from a good selection then started with a generous portion of the French Onion Soup which was fabulous. Then went onto the Steak Frites which we split and it was enough for the both of us after eating that soup. The fries were excellent and the Bernaise sauce was fabulous. The steak was not a big portion but enough for the both of us. Then I splurged with the Creme Brule which was the best I've had in a long time. WE spent nearly 2 hours there and never felt rushed at all. I highly recommend this cute/cozy bistro.

Hillcrest's Pleasant French Bistro

By Ken H |

The interior of the restaurant is subdued and pleasant, although because it was a sunny day, on this lunch visit we chose to sit outside. The waiter was friendly and helpful, although when I ordered the soup of the day, he brought me their signature onion soup. Since it was piping hot and its aroma was inviting, I did not complain and ate the soup he brought. I enjoyed the soup's rich flavor--the perfect balance between onion, the crust of bread and the melted cheese on top. My warm goat cheese salad, however, overdid the greens and bacon bits and skimped on the goat cheese. I did like the poached egg on the side--a very nice touch. The bread pudding, a large creation of bread, topping, and sliced strawberries, proved almost a meal in itself.

Very nice small venue with very nice food and staff! Perfectly comfortable and relaxed atmosphere. Go there for a nice experience.

Welcoming restaurant!

By Teri M |

Really nice atmosphere, excellent service (very friendly staff), food is wonderful! We were able to try French dishes we had never heard of and some that we have wondered about like Escargo! We definitely messed up a few words but our waiter was so friendly and encouraging. Made us feel right at home.

The little things can make a difference

By Oebersole |

First time guest. Although the food very good, I'm not sure I'll return based upon the little things that bothered me. The server asked if we wanted water. 3 of 4 of us said yes. When the bill cane, we noticed we were charged $3 for water. When asked if we wanted water, the server, Thomas, should have told us there was a charge for water. We also took our own wine, and certainly didn't expect a corkage fee of $20 per bottle. Went to Ruth Chris the following night, and their corkage fee was $15, and they had the wine we brought on their wine menu. Au Revoir is not a fine dining restaurant, and a $20 corkage fee is too much. Sometimes it's the "little things" that will keep a guest from returning. Service was just ok... nothing special.

Délicieux!

By Tishlf |

I keep on coming back to this neighborhood bistro. Do not expect to find a ¨nouvelle cuisine¨ trend here, it´s confort French food at its best. The atmosphere is warm and cozy, a true French bistro ambiance. The service is diligent in general, except when it´s very busy, but it´s always friendly. The mussels and fries, steak et frites, salmon are very good. If you come fro Brunch don´t miss the Eggs Bénédictine and mimosas. My favorite item in the menu: the Lavander French Fries. Bon appétit!

Pretty good for x-mas eve

By Judy G |

This tiny bistro was so kind to be open on the holiday. Service was uneven but that's to be forgiven on Christmas Eve. The sea bass was outstanding as was the salmon. Be sure to get the lavender fries and the bread with garlic butter. If you're like me that's a whole meal. I was disappointed they would not serve me cheesecake for dessert because they were "saving" it for diners who ordered off the pre fixe menu. That was wrong...in my humble opinion.

One of my favorite places in San Diego

By Larry W |

Absolutely love this cafe. The food is delicious and the service is always wonderful. I try to go here each time I'm in SD.

Great place

By David B |

After reading some reviews, and were in the neighborhood, we decided to give it a try. We're glad to say that we have to agree with the reviews: this is a great place and deserves the positive reviews. It has a "neighborhood feel," and it seemed that most of the patrons were regulars. It also had a little of the feel of what one would experience in France, or, at least, it reminded us of our experiences in France. The service was pretty good, sincere. I had a strip steak with green peppercorn sauce. Ample portions. There was a glitch, and the way it was handled speaks volumes: my wife ordered a rack of lamb medium rare, and it came medium well. They did it again, but also medium well. The couple next to us also had the rack of lamb, and said it was cooked perfectly, medium rare. My wife, rather than give them a third try, ordered something else, which was excellent. When the bill arrived, we were charged for only one entrée, mine. Also, during the meal, they also poured my wife another glass of wine, on them. (The wine she ordered was quite good, and I would suspect that the other wines on their list were quite good, and appropriately priced). When I pointed out to the waiter what I thought to be an error, he told us that we were charged for only one entrée, because it was unthinkable that they would charge for my wife's dinner, considering the problem with the rack of lamb. Au Revoir is on our go-back-to list, hopefully soon.

Great service and authentically French tasting food

By socalmom2013 |

Their fries are just like Europe -- and the lavender adds a nice kick. Everything I tried was great. The two-table was tiny though, and the atmosphere not really memorable.

Great brunch, awesome service!

By cedricellis |

I was walking by this place waiting for my seating (45 minutes wait) at Snooze and saw a customer eating French toast and decided to skip Snooze and eat here. This place was awesome I had salmon Benedict with Pomme Frits and bottomless mimosas. It was outstanding. The Hollandaise sauce was awesome and on point. My server, Cecile (sorry if I spelled it wrong) was outstanding. Charming place. I’m glad I skipped the hype of Snooze and went here.

Classic French

By lawinmtn |

This bistro is in the heart of Hillcrest-- small, quaint and inviting. The food, on the other hand, while well prepared, was in the classic French style which, at least on the night we were there, was too heavy and far from the modern trend toward lighter French nouvelle cuisine. The priced fixed menu was reasonable offering an entree choice of quail, salmon or braised short ribs. The first course was a predictable choice between onion soup or salad (or a pate plate). The dessert was also a choice between the equally predictable creme brulee, poached pear, or chocolate mousse. It did seem as if the recipes could have come straight from Julia Child's Joy of French Cooking a la the 1960's. A little innovation and use of fresher, lighter ingredients would have made the experience more than average. The service, on the other hand, was slow and inattentive. Although a Beaujolais should have paired well with the entrees, the wine chosen as "pairing" with the dishes fell short of really complimenting them. The wine, however, may have just been overshadowed by the dominance of the dishes themselves. All an all, a good, but not necessarily repeatable experience.

Bienvenue à la maison

By Tom E |

A place where you are made to feel at home. Family, Couples, Individuals. Good French comfort food. Inexpensive. Well stocked wine list. Servers that pull up a chair and chat about the menu. Do not overlook the Catch of the Day. The other night was Black Cod and the serving was very generous. The Lavender Fries are a hit. And the real surprise of the evening was the mousse au chocolat for dessert. Rich and delicious.

All good but the bread

By Jay A |

We frequent this place whenever we are in Hillcrest. The menu, which you can checkout on line, is varied and wonderful as is the wine list. There is one problem, a big one. The bread is not French, it is Italian. It is white bread with a soft crust and a crumb that is absent any personality, taste or texture. Very disappointing to us. It is a French restaurant. French artisan bread is really not available here in the US but we can get close. Using Italian bread is ridiculous since Bread and Cie is practically right down the street and they make a pretty good baguette. Please, stop with the Italian bread. We will come too your Little Italy restaurant for the Italian like bread but keep the French in Au Revoir.

Never again - disappointing food and service

By Taylor I |

We have been there twice now. The first time was awful service but the food was good so we let it slide. It was also a few days after valentines so we figured maybe that was because of the proximity to the holiday. Last night solidified things as this place being a “never again” restaurant on our list. We were a party of 6 who were one of two parties in the entire place for at least the first hour of our reservation. Our server knew we had to leave by a certain time because we had theater tickets. It started with little things - lipstick left behind on a water glass served to my brother in law, the salads and appetizers rolling out to people at different times. Nothing awful but just off. Then came our wait. It was an hour for entrees to arrive. When we asked our server why people who came in after us were getting their meals, we were told it was because of our party size and they wanted everyone to be served at the same time. More waiting. And more. Finally 5 entrees showed up (one of which was covered in mushrooms even though it was explicitly ordered without). My husband’s duck was missing. I’m not sure if our server only wrote down one of the two orders or if the kitchen read her ticket wrong, but we were missing a dish. My husband watched the whole exchange - despite what they said about his being out soon, there was no duck and they were rushing to make one. This is when our server got incredibly rude. I don’t know if it was her mistake or the kitchens, but it wasn’t ours. We sat down and ordered food at a restaurant my mother in law and father in law visit somewhat regularly. But, rather than apologize for the restaurant’s mistake she said she was “sorry we are having a bad night.” How that makes any sense, I don’t know. She slapped a to go bag down in front of my husband. It left everyone with a sour taste in their mouth. Even with the service issues, the food was just fine. The puff pastry on my escargot was chewy instead of light but the snails were fine. Not good but not bad. My father in law loved his sea bass. My sister in laws raviolis were covered in mushrooms despite her ordering the dish without. My moules were okay but nothing to rave about. The salmon was a huge serving and was “fine.” Basically - we won’t be back nor would we recommend it to anyone.

An authentic experience

By Roxanne L |

Went with another couple yesterday. We all loved this restaurant. Excellent food. Excellent wine and beef. Excellent service. Can't ask for more than that. We tried an appetizer on the daily specials list - frois gras - and a French cheese board. For dinner we tried traditional dishes such as coq au vin and coquettes de lapin ( rabbit). Also sampled a huge double pork chop and duck. Very nice authentic French waitress. Reminded us of Bergamonte Cafe in Paris.

Very acceptable bistro in San Diego

By nurealam |

As SF Bay Area people and French food lovers in particular, we're admittedly difficult. Au Revoir is very acceptable even for relatively picky people. Understanding that it's a bistro as the French mean it means you won't expect the fanciest restaurant in town. Food is excellent. We got in with barely an hour's notice (tho the restaurant is not large). Parking could be a problem, I imagine, since this is a very popular neighborhood (Hillcrest) and the parking area in front of the restaurant is quite limited. Good entree selections, acceptable wine selections. Price is fine--even low--compared to elsewhere. A good choice. Do not hesitate to eat here.

Charming, Flavorful, Authentic, and a great Value!!

By Tanya |

Not sure how it is that I haven't written a review on Au Revoir yet, but here it goes! Every French restaurant owner in America should come have dinner here and learn some lessons to apply to their respective restaurants. My boyfriend (who is French) and I (who has been to France nearly 10 times now) can't stop raving about Au Revoir. In our opinions, it is the perfect combination of atmosphere, good cooking, and very REASONABLE pricing! This is why: The portions are just right -- not too big (American style) and not too small (over-priced French restaurant style.) The atmosphere is authentic, charming, and cozy. The thing about French restaurants in France is that they are usually rather small and intimate, not big and "elegant fancy" like we see at places like Tapenade, Bernard O's, or Mr. A's. The walls are brick, the lighting is dim, and the decoration is just super cute. The food is GREAT! Creative (last time I had duck breast in a chocolate-port sauce), perfectly done, and fresh. They always have new specials so we never get tired of the menu. The servers are actually FRENCH! This really does make a difference for me, and you know you can trust their recommendations. Plus it just adds to the "depaysant" experience. Last but not least, the prices are SO reasonable, I wonder how they can even make money on a $19 duck breast in chocolate port sauce with fingerling potatoes and haricot-verts! Hopefully they're making enough to stick around for a looong time. I think the word that sums it up best is AUTHENTIC. We have reservations again in 45 minutes with 4 other people that have never been there yet. Can't wait! Au Revoir, je t'aime!

Dinner Review

By jrdyer |

Great food, reasonable prices and stellar service makes a great combination. We had the fromage and charcuterie appetizer with lamb and boeuf borginone entrees and bottle of Pinot Noir. Everything was full of flavor and served quickly and efficiently. Will return again on our next visit to San Diego.

Authentic Bistro fair with flair!

By SurfC108 |

My wife and I were looking for a new dining experience. We were in the mood for French cuisine, so Au Revoir it was. It was a Tuesday, and their prixe fixe menu was available. Great food for good value! The baguette with aioli was spot on. We added the cheese plate. A nice selection of cheeses with candied walnuts for texture. The mixed green salad was nicely dressed with vinaigrette, and the escargot had little puff pastries on top to soak up the butter and garlic sauce. I had a generous serving of mussels, and my wife had the mushroom ravioli. The mussels were swimming in a white sauce with bacon, and the ravioli were toothsome and tasty. The Creme brûlée and apple tart left us quite satisfied, as did our server Selin. She was attentive but didn't hover. I highly recommend Au Revoir for a casual night out.

Really fantastic

By Jaime |

I walked around Hill Crest looking for a nice restaurant. And fortunately I found this place, where food was amazing (really french food), service attentif and nice ambiance. I will definetly recomend.

Great little restaurant

By Mike F |

In the mood for French fare while visiting San Diego, we happened on this neighborhood gem. Our lucky day! The food was very good and the service friendly and (like France) not hurried but rather designed to allow diners to move therough their meal at their own pace. We selected the escargot and frog legs as starters and the steak frites and cote du proc as entrees. Each was a delight to eat. Would we here longer for a return visit to sample other menu items.

Bonjour to Au Revoir

By jbrodydhh |

We missed La Vache, and we're please to find it has been replaced with an even finer French bistro. From the family of Arrivederci restaurants. Located in Hillcrest, a vibrant, artsy community in San Diego. Amazing lavender fries, moules, sea bass, salmon and saffron risotto. The fish was done perfectly, and oh the sauces! Stop by and say Bonjour to Au Revoir.

Disgusting food

By Coast G |

Horrible food served here, even made us feel sick, beer was hot, did not change plates or silverware, mushroom soup was all milk, tartare steak disgusting who knows what meat they used, some oil on salad no salt, dessert was out of a can like, all plates were bad

Bistro - French

Small and intimate, good for business or for leisure. Menu more or less typical French provincial, good flavours, and good choices. Good service, and good value.

charming service, good food

By Tony C |

We try a different San Diego restaurant every Friday evening. This week it was Au Revoir Bistro. We'd walked past it many times but hadn't gone in because it doesn't look promising from outside, being located on a busy corner in a tiny strip mall. The mall does have a few parking spaces; we were able to get one, which is a good thing, because parking is a challenge in this neighborhood. The service was delightful--attractive, attentive young men from Marseilles, Lyon, and Vera Cruz (the last is studying French). In fact the service was the best we've experienced in San Diego. Thomas (Lyon) sat down with us so he could take his time answering questions and telling us about the specials without hovering. The onion soup and butternut squash soup-of-the-day were excellent. The steak frite was very good, but the accompanying fries were dry, too salty, and filled half the plate. Salad with pears was delicious. Coq au vin was less successful--the vin overpowered everything else with its powerful flavor. The menu must have changed since some other reviews, since neither beef bourguignon nor trout were on the menu. Fish of the day was yellowtail. Rabbit, lamb, filet mignon, and others were there. The set dinner menu mentioned in another review seems to be available only on Tuesdays. We didn't have wine; I think I would have enjoyed the dinner more if I'd imbibed , but then our bill would have been even higher. They charge for water, which surprised us. Thomas explained that it's extra special; we didn't appreciate it. The music is unobtrusive, the decor pleasant. The view out the big windows--parking lot, busy streets, drab storefronts--slightly diminishes the romantic possibilities. Because of the traffic, I probably wouldn't choose outdoor seating. Next time I'll order onion soup and a salad, then go straight to dessert. The dessert menu was tempting, but we were too full to indulge.

Delicious, authentic, and not over-priced!!!!

I love french cuisine butcan never find an affordable good place. I saw au revoir in the aaa magazine and decided to try it. The moment you walk in you feel like you are in france. Most of the staff speaks french and they are all very attentive. After my first time there I went back almost every weekend and took friends and family with me. No matter what time of the day brunch, lunch or dinner I have been pleased with everything.

Dog friendly bistro with great crepes!!!!

We were not sure where we were going to eat since we don't know Hillcrest that well and since we were with my BF's dog. We just happened upon Au Revoir Bistro and I checked my Yelp app to get their number. I called and they said that they are dog friendly! We were here for breakfast. I ordered crepes and they were very good!!!! The coffee was great too!!!! We had outside seats so I was very happy as I enjoy people watching!!!! What can I do without at Au Revoir Bistro? Nothing!!!! What stands out at Au Revoir Bistro? Great crepes in a dog friendly place!!!! Five stars!!!! Au Revoir is really, really ridiculously great!!!!

Great French Restaurant

By TheAnvil |

In the mood for some superb food while visiting San Diego? This is a great choice, if that's the case. Excellent wine selection. The steak au poivre was superb. The creme brûlée was the best I've ever had, anywhere, and I've been around France a bit. Awesome choice if good food is what you seek!

Authentic French and will always delight your visit

By BachelorNumberOne |

Our stay had ended at a 4 Diamond Resort in Rancho Bernardo and I wanted a French dining experience. The authentic food along with simple atmosphere was outstanding. My first clue of my great experience was that many locals were dining at Au Revoir 90% had made reservations and the rest were walk-ins. The Beet Salad was so amazing with the goat cheese, pine nuts and a few mint leaves I did not use any salad dressing. I then had the Mussels in besamel and grainy mustard, Fantastic. The Pomme tort with a side of simple vanilla ice cream and double Espresso. Note the dining room filled to capacity in 45 minutes and the staff was well in charge of the rush of guests. Thomas the Manager and staff all attended to all of my needs and more.

Overrated!

By skagittraveler |

Egad! I can't believe the ratings on this place. Showed up with another couple. All of us love French bistrot offerings but this was beyond a disappointing evening. The building is a standard SoCal strip mall so we sat at the typical floor to ceiling glass wall next to a parking lot and had difficulty with the setting sun. No relief. No biggie. The wine list was OK. We bought a bottle off the list and brought one of our own. That went smoothly except our server wanted us to use the first bottle's wine glasses and acted put out that we asked for fresh. The wives figured the tip for this person at around 10%. She was difficult to find, murky in her descriptions, and not a good representative of the house. To the food. One of our party ordered the French onion soup and a tarte a l'oignon. Unrecognizable as standard FB dishes. The gruyere on the soup was so massive that it prevented penetration to the soup which looked like it was less than a half-cup. Cheese was melted down every side of the bowl. Monster piece of bread. Unacceptable. The tarte was also unrecognizable. It consisted of two pieces of baguette toasted, buttered, and sort of smeared with what looked like sautéed onion. Astounding. We wondered what it was. It resembled bruschetta. When we called our server over she said, "Oh. We ran out of the dish. Don't you like this?" When our person declined she took it off our bill. The other three of us had ordered the duck magret. We should have been forewarned when we saw it was Maple Leaf but I've had excellent duck breast from that supplier other places. This was far from it. Overcooked. Dry. Tasteless. Even though we'd ordered it medium or less. We paid up, got out, and aren't returning. Hope your experience is better.

A terrific neighborhood find!

I really enjoy this bistro. Delicious food, very courteous staff, low volume music, charming atmosphere and if you're lucky, off street parking!!

Arrogant waiter — stay away

By detchmike |

I asked for two glasses of white "house" wine ($16), mentioned something light "like" a Sauvignon Blanc and got charged for a regular Sauvignon Blanc of $24 + $4 tip (paid for by my first-time-to-USA visitor from Rome before I could watch the oversight) in a quick mid-Saturday afternoon stop. The waiter was rude, arrogant and admitted his error (about my request for a house wine) but did not offer to correct the error. My friend was quite SHOCKED. Go somewhere else and avoid this deceitful waiter. There are plenty of great restaurants in a two -block area.

Good food

A fine catch!

By Mel M |

If you're looking for some good French cooking, and a pleasant relaxed setting, Au Revoir is going to be your kind of place. I've eaten there for lunch and dinner a total of five times and it's always been satisfying. The food is very well prepared, sometimes the chef has his own take on a traditional recipe (like the cassoulet) but it's never a disappointment, and the service is friendly and pleasant. They do like to close on time, so be sure you allow yourself enough time to sit back, relax and enjoy the after tastes of your dinner. Don't miss the creme brûlée: it's the real thing!

We enjoyed a quick and simple meal on a Thursday night, moules mariniere, boeuf bourgignon nf fabulous lavender frites. Very well priced, fast efficient service and would come again. The food was excellent and well presented.

Trying too hard

By Larry196860750 |

I thought the meal was average, service was fine. Too much going on with the food; too many different flavors. I took leftovers home and the meal was better the next day! Things calmed down. May be just me and not the chef. It was the pork belly and duck entree. My wife liked the beef bourguignon.

Not top notch and only French influenced - but good value

By 0591TimS |

We arrived at 5pm on a Sunday for an early dinner. It was far from busy so we were able to pick a table near the open patio doors but out of the sun. Our waiter was very friendly and attentive. We started with the pate selection to share. Very good. I was a little disappointed with the Rhone red wine we picked, a GSM. Rhone reds can be quite variable so perhaps we should have asked our waiter to make a recommendation. The wines are moderately priced and our selection was one of the more expensive choices. It was drinkable. We had a duck breast special and the steak frites. Both were quite good. We finished with crepes suzette which were very good. At $116 for two this was good value. We will almost certainly try this restaurant again. The location is not particularly classy put there's off street parking and we parked right in front - but it was a quiet time and could easily be filled up at more regular dinner periods. There's a patio but it doesn't have a sidewalk cafe ambience at this location. The decor inside is somewhat bistro with a bar and wooden tables, most against a wall with plush benches on the wall side and a few free standing in the middle of the room.

A great alternative in Hillcrest!

My son and I had dinner at Au Revoir in Hillcrest (San Diego neighborhood) last week. Very nice wine list, with not only California wines (we live in San Diego), but many excellent French wines, too. He had onion soup and the steak/frites and I had raviolis stuffed with wild mushrooms. All dishes were very tasty, and the service by our French restaurant owner was subtle and charming; i.e, no hovering but there when we needed her. Almost best of all: the meal was so reasonably priced, unlike many (if not most) overpriced French restaurants in the US. I highly recommend this bistro!

Wonderful choice for our 30th wedding anniversary

We ordered the lavender french fries for an appetizer and they were great. Came with what seemed like a house made mayonnaise with a touch of mustard. Great! My husband ordered the pork chop special and said was one of the best he has had. My filet mignon (medium well) was excellent. The mashed potatoes were prepared without a lot of heavy ingredients. Both of our vegetables were done nicely. The service was great. We were seated right away on a Saturday night. Prices were very reasonable for the quality of food. Restaurant was not loud and soft music in the backgrou d just right. We will definitely put this on our list of favorite restaurants.

I walked out without ordering...

I decided to try this place on a Sunday evening - looking forward to some French bistro food. The restaurant was about half full and I was immediately seated. After being seated the staff never acknowledged that I was there with a "be with you in a minute" or "thank you for waiting". I waited for a very long time which allowed me to hear the people next to me complaining about the service and also allowed me to watch the table across from me get their appetizers served while they were eating their main course (with no apology). Then after watching a waiter bring plates to large table across from me and having no knowledge of who had ordered what or how any of the steaks on plates were cooked - I decided to leave. As I was getting up to leave a snotty waiter asked if I wanted some water. I told him that I was tired of waiting and he (with major attitude) told me "well you just have a great night". I won't go back to this place...if this is typical of their service I don't know how they stay in business.

Like Eating in France Without Leaving San Diego

By CAPainter |

After visiting France many times, I have found somewhere to have authentic French food and bistro atmosphere in San Diego. The food was delicious, the bread tasted just like in France and the waiter had an authentic Parisian accent. I will return again to try the soup. This visit I had Salad Nicoise and would have given a 5 star review except for that my salad had sardines substituted for anchovies.

Tuesday Special Rules!

By SallyAnn W |

We always stop in when we're visiting San Diego and if it's a Tuesday, even better because they have this awesome $30 special of an app/entree/desert that can't be beat! This time we had escargot/confit duck/apple tart and pear salad/steak &fries/creme brulee. We were disappointed in the deserts as they seemed old, but everything else was very good. Great by-the-glass wine selection.

Outstanding French Bistro

Great Food, Excellent Service, and friendly atmosphere. They only serve wine and beer

Great little French Bistro

By Cora W |

My husband and I went for their Tuesday night special. We both had the French onion soup - very good and just the perfect amount of salt not overly salty like a lot of restaurants serve it. I had the salmon and my husband had the steak. The salmon was done to perfection, and my husband's steak was good. We both had the creme brulee, and it was the best one I've had to date. Would definitely recommend it.

An Excellent Lunch from the Beginning on

By PalmDeano |

We had lived in San Diego for a number of years, but moved to Palm Springs about 15 years ago. We have rarely returned, but a friend invited us over, and took us to lunch at Au Revoir. It was a truly wonderful experience. the wait staff was great, the food so good, and the atmosphere so French. When we go back to SD we will certainly make sure we get to Au Revoir again.

Delicious Dishes and Charming Bistrot

By sobaytravelguy |

I've had lunch here twice and was impressed both times. The chicken & brie sandwich was so superior to other sandwiches, with carefully grilled chicken and tasty ingredients. The salad nicoise was also a notch above others I've had at other places. Very fresh and nicely presented! The prices are quite reasonable and there is some parking. I'd give this place five stars if the service was a bit more attentive.

Not very good

By JCarlson1 |

I went for brunch on a Sunday because from the street I was attracted it by the location/building/decor. I do like the fact that the server was french, made it very authentic. The service was excellent, however the food was not that good. No bechamel sauce on the croque madame, and the flavor of the nicoise salad was not very appetizing. Probably the best mimosa I have ever had, but that's about it.

Delicious food

The food came out hot, delicous and timely. We had dinner from the Tuesday night fixed price menu. A little expensive but the food quality was on point. Canard confit-miam!

Surprise!

we happened upon this restaurant when we were in San Diego last month. Went to the Artist & Craftsman Supply for some art supplies and decided to have lunch. Au Revoir was right across the street so we decided to give it a try. I was so pleased! I had lobster ravioli that was excellent. Our waiter, Luciano, was so personable and solicitous. i have already recommended this restaurant to someone who was looking for a restaurant to take visitors.

Great prompt service, easy parking, Menu/food/desert 5/5

wine list was good as well, quaint old town area with true french cafe ambiance, fine dining without pretense - will be back- what else is there?

French gem in Hillcrest area

By jorgito715 |

This is another small restaurant in the Hillcrest area, kind like a neighborhood place. Started with soup of the day, cream of zucchini, delicious. I had my sights on the Boeuf Bourguignon and it was exquisite!! Really tasty, well seasoned and perfectly paired with a California red. A memorable dish, highly recommend. Spouse had the almond crusted sea bass with creamy risotto. Good wine selection, actually our waiter Cecilia did a mini wine tasting to select the right one for each of us. We shared a blueberry pudding with ice cream for dessert. Both waiters, Sergio and Cecilia were wonderful and made us feel at home.

Good find

Small French Bistro in Hillcrest. Great service and really good brunch menu. Everyone was really happy with their choices. Some parking in front but more in 5th (street and pay lots) also had good Bloody Mary.

Outstanding!

We had a fabulous dinner at this French bistro in the Hillcrest neighborhood. Everything was excellent and the frites were to die for. The menu offers a good variety of choices at reasonable prices. Nice wine list and again reasonably priced for quality. Service was first-rate. Decor is simple and charming. Highly recommended.

A Neighborhood Gem

By mittyc2016 |

This 30 seat French bistro is located in the funky Hillcrest neighborhood and well worth going out of your way for a visit. Food is classical French, they have a nice wine list and the prices will leave you smiling. For example, the set dinner menu with 3 courses is $23. We love their onion soup, beef bourguignon, duck, trout, etc. Service is low key and friendly. Give them a try.

Great French Bistro

Absolutely lovely. Wonderful atmosphere. Attentive and courteous staff. Delicious food. Squash raviolis with mushroom sauce and a more than generous house salad. Warm bread and a lavish dessert menu. Tops on my next visit to San Diego.
