We order delivery from August Moon frequently and are amazed every time by how fast they are (and we live in Sylvan/Forest Heights area, not downtown). The food is quite good. I've tried several of my favorite standard dishes so far and all have been very well prepared. They have some interesting things on their menu too, like a szechuan lamb dish that we really like (I'd never seen lamb on a Chinese menu before).

We were given a recommendation from our Hotel but we regret taking their advice. We should have realized something was up since there was only one other party in there and all the other restaurants we passed were crowded..We ordered a pupu platter and could not eat anything on it except the shrimp because the rest was disgusting. The beef skewers were definitely made from spoiled meat as they tasted sour...There were five of us and not person liked their meal. The waitress was not friendly and seemed to be annoyed that she had to serve us..My advice is keep walking past this place.

The lunch dining experience was great the food was very reasonably priced service was great and overall a wonderful lunch experience at a very good price and I have lots of choices on the menu pretty nice clean place to stop.

On an absolutely gorgeous day in Portland, walking lovely 23rd St.(with ALL it's eating options), appetites sharpened by all the fresh air, sunshine and exercise, we looked around us and said "how about that Chinese place over there?" and walked into August Moon. I'm sorry it gets such a bad rap. On a chilly, sunny fall day in the early afternoon, Chinese sounded so good--and it was! I think the trick here is to harken back to your childhood (especially if you grew up in the 60s), and just order a combination plate like you used to get when you went to your one and only local Chinese place with your parents. You can't go wrong with noodles, rice, and something comforting like egg foo yung and fried shrimp. It was tasty and not at all greasy, the regular menu prices (it was Sunday) were reasonable, the service was fine, and we left happy.

Great food and excellent service! Don't miss the sesame chicken! Great prices too. I also had salad rolls which were really good too.

Lame service.

Wife was shopping. Meeting here for dinner. Like others, no business on a beautiful busy Friday should have been all I needed to see. I told sole server I would be waiting a while. No response. I had to ask for beer. I finish it and she walked past me 10 times and never looked my way. I'm too old too have to work to give people money. Paid for beer, let her know the problem and left

And one out of every few orders they will drop the ball and it will be very late and they will lie about it.

Noticed “Zagat Rated” placard in the window (Year 2013) while walking this great neighborhood earlier in the day so decided to try dinner here later that same day. When we arrived we were the only people in the restaurant. Not a good sign. Service and food were OK, but nothing special. Definitely not deserving of a top Zagat rating. Lots of other restaurants in the area, so would probably not return for a future visit.

We love this place. It is one of Parker's original restaurants. Great food! Everyone is so friendly! Great place for dinner before ta movie.

We like this restaurant because they deliver. Except when they take 30 minutes longer than promised. And bring the wrong order. And it doesn't taste that great. Some nights everything goes great and we love their food and prompt, friendly delivery. And then there are other nights...

Wife and I and a Friend just got in under the 3 P.M. lunch wire on a Wednesday and were "treated" to an indifferent, unfocused waitress who we literally had to drag into her role as someone connected to our food and beverage needs. Nonetheless my wife and I ended up with a pretty decent lunch consisting of a wonderful, heaping dish of Szechuan green beans that we shared along with seperate entrees of lo mein noodles and mushrooms and spicy eggplant and fried rice all for $21.60 including a glass of burgundy. Not a place we would particularly look to return to it was nevertheless not a complete bust.

Order dumplings that were more dumpling then filling, won ton soup was excellent, BBQ pork fried rice was awful leaving me to wonder .., where's the beef? Can't recommend

Food was rancid! I ordered from Ubereats the orange chicken, salt and pepper prawns white rice, and fried rice I received were all not edible. The service was fast but the food was expired. I’ve never experienced being served rancid food. The smell and taste were traumatic. I need a refund. Beware before ordering the pictures on Ubereats are NOT accurate with what you receive. I don’t know how they have a 4.5 review rating on ubereats. It’s completely not accurate.

I walk by this restaurant a lot when I shop in 23rd ave, but I just never make my way into this restaurant until one day my friend Jove visited me. Restaurant is more than 20 years old, so the environment can't say great but still pretty comfortable with warm lights. we ordered 5 dishes that night, all of them turned out to be quite good. If you like chinese food, you should try this restaurant. btw i am a chinese.

The lunch hour group appeared to be late in arriving, that should have been a warning! Our foursome chose our chairs, sat down and began reading the menu. All of my favorites were there, Pot Stickers – Hot Sour Soup and General Toas Chicken. My wife said she was going to try the Shrimp dish. Those words were the only semblance to my favorites, the words on the menu. The Pot Stickers were over done, the Hot Sour Soup while thick enough the taste was questionable. The Chicken was not close, mere Bar B Q sauce masquerading as the real deal. Food quality was mediocre at best. Service was Spartan. One lone female waitress showed us to the mostly empty dinning room. Returned many, many minutes later to take our order. We sat waiting and discussed the menu during the waitress’ absence. The small talk soon turned to where is our food. The Stickers arrived with an abundance of Teriyaki sauce. The sauce was the only discernable taste. The soups arrived many minutes later and were literally thrown into our laps. Glad she had accurate throwing skills! The Hot Sour Soup was not OK, more tofu then anything. The entrées were brought to the table one by one. The sauce on my plate was more like thin and re-flavored Bar B Q sauce. In closing- I talked with the other dinners at my table of this date and not one would rate the meal better then just OK. They held the same views as to the poor service. Perhaps this was a bad day for the restaurant. I sincerely hope it was just a bad day. Unfortunately, my plans do not call for me to return to down town Portland, at least any time soon.

We were the only customers in the restaurant on Labor Day, with hundreds of people walking by the window. Our fellow eater ordered the Peking Duck, as soon as we arrived, because it takes about 30 minutes. His arrived way before the rest of our requests. I ordered the Happy Family, scallops, shrimp, BBQ pork, chicken and veggies. The scallop tasted like card board, the shrimp was very fishy, the veggies were good, was afraid to eat it, took it home, threw it away. Service was very slow, considering we were the only diners............Would not suggest this place.

We live in Washington and have seen this restaurant several times when in Portland, but the timing wasn't right to stop and eat. Well, the timing was right today, but this certainly was the wrong place to eat. It was noon when we walked in and there was one other diner. We stood there waiting to be greeted and finally a woman came out and said "Can I help you". We said there are two of us and we would like to eat lunch. "Go sit down, she said". We ordered and the food was reasonably priced but had absolutely no flavor. I don't like really spicy food, but this food tasted like it had been rinsed in dish water and then put on a plate. We ate some of the food and pushed our plates aside hoping to get our check and leave. We sat for 10 minutes waiting and finally got up and went to the counter and paid. At this time there were only 3 other parties in the restaurant. As I said "don't waste your time for money". There are plenty of other good Chinese restaurants around.

August moon is a little hole in the wall, blink and you miss it restaurant. It is very popular with locals because the food is amazing. The woman who runs the place, and has for years, is a little cold with not much of a sense of humor but somehow it adds to the charm. Every dish I have tried has been delicious so it's hard to pick a favorite! The portions are large and well worth the price. Their lunch combos are also very satisfying and a great value!

This restaurant is a hidden gem. I had a delicious meal there and it is very well priced. Service was great and the food tasted fresh and was served very hot.

... when we first moved to portland my children were young and we lived around the corner from august moon. we now live across town, but it's still our go-to chinese restaurant of choice. i love booths and the family that runs the place; it's cozy and i've watched their children grow up as have mine. truth is general tso chicken is probably not a very original chinese dish; but if you like something some place else i'll be you'll love it here. and their scallion pancakes are the main reason my daughter won't let me get take out from closer to home. and the way they do their sesame chicken... not breaded... is unique and wonderful. if you find yourself in the rain on nw 23rd and a little hungry, duck in here. but don't expect to be hungry again in an hour. the portions are great and the service is too. chances are you'll become a regular, too.

I thought the food was very good here. I had the Mongolian beef which was appropriately spicy. It came with a small bowl of soup (I had hot and sour), a sprig roll, fried rice and a fortune cookie. All for under $9. My wife had the curried chicken, and it was delicious. This is a traditional Chinese place -- probably nothing on the menu you have not seen before, but they really execute the old favorites well.

Not the best I've ever had, but palatable Chinese American fare.

The lemon chicken is simply divine. Juicy meat, crispy coating and the tasty lemon sauce, all combine to make a delicious dish. Paired with the Szechuan green beans and veggie fried rice, make a meal to remember, and onecthst you’ll be eager to have again. The steamed potstickers and hot and sour soup, are also wonderful.

The food is consistently good enough. Service is always slow since there's only one person serving. I've never seen it busy. The kicker was today not getting water when everyone else did, the broccoli beef tasted like kissing someone with bad breath and the sound of nails being clipped coming from behind the counter or kitchen area. Free entertainment outside though when the drunk man started dancing at the bus stop on 23rd!

I'm a fan of GrubHub here at work. This is a summary of multiple orders I've placed and actually dining in. While I love the wide variety of restaurants available this is always my go to place for Chinese. I've ordered from other restaurants and some are faster, some are cheaper (August Moon is in NW PDX which has pricey rent), but this one just fits for what I'm looking for in a lunch when I want a treat. Portions are healthy - always have plenty to take home for dinner. I use GrubHub and sometimes put in special instructions like substituting noodles for rice and I like that the restaurant always calls me to verify exactly what I want. They are a little heavy on some of the sauces sometimes, but have found that when I ask them to add veggies to a dish that is primarily meat - WOW - it's like they raided a neighborhood garden. Seems not to matter when I order - delivery is going to be 1 hour - LOL. I have also eaten at the restaurant itself (about 30 minutes wait) - hosts are gracious and I like the family atmosphere, with little one(s) sitting in back booth working on coloring or homework(?) and family checks in on them frequently. Older tables / booths, so if you want flash" you need to head somewhere else - this is a little funky, where your parents went, kind of place. Perfect place to settle in for bowl of soup and an entree or potstickers on a rainy day!

They delivered late night when I was running out of options so in that sense I was grateful. The person who took my order and delivered it were both nice. We had the cheese wontons which were mostly wontons (not nearly enough cheese). Also has shrimp fried rice which was good and some rice noodles which were good too. We also ordered a tofu dish the order taker recommend and it was just tofu floating in a bland brown sauce. No veggies, no real flavor. I was pretty surprised it was their recommendation and sadly I dumped it out. Never done that before. I wouldn't choose this place again unless I was in a pinch.

I went with a friend, and we tried some of the vegetarian options on the menu. We had the vegetable egg foo young, green beans with mushrooms and vegetable fried rice. The food was very tasty and plentiful, and they don't use MSG. I recommend this place for vegetarian and omnivores alike.

I really wasn't impressed. Atmosphere and cleanliness are plus. Service was poor. Crab Rangoon was not good at all. We were never asked what we wanted to drink.

Good Chineese food for Portland

I have had excellent Chinese food, good Chinese food , average Chinese food and even mediocre Chinese food but rarely have I had bad Chinese food..... until now. I really really dislike giving a bad review and I wish there was one dish we ordered that was good, but i really have to say that nothing was good and only one or two dishes were palatable. Maybe it was a bad night ? I ordered on line and showed up 5 minutes after the order was to be ready and it had not even been put together yet. The place was not busy, only two tables were filled and on one else waiting for pick up. The crab rangoon had barely any filling at all , it was mostly fried dough. The wontons also were just wet dough wrappers with nothing in them. The soup was bland, the crispy tofu and vegetables was soggy and overcooked. The chicken with orange flavor had none. Sadly to say I could go on and on. We ate enough to fill us up and threw the rest away. This is one place I will not try again and it is too bad because it is right in my neighborhood and they do take out and also deliver. I really would like to know if this was a fluke or if this is their usual quality ? Sorry August Moon !

traditional chinese food in a quiet friendly neighborhood restaurant. Food ok. Service please tell. Good parking in the evening in a hard to park area. If your looking for something special Portland has some great Chinese food in Chinese neighborhoods on the east side of Portland. On the other hand if you are looking for Chinese food in an unpretensous neighborhood restaurant this conveniently located pleasant restaurant, modestly priced with friendly service will fill the bill nicely. They also do take out and deliver.

Always good.

I happened to be in Portland on the snowy day,i checked on line my food delivery options and came a cross of this Chinese restaurant. I ordered on line ,the food came on time that they promised,it was delicious, the portions were great and i was very happy.

This place carries the Tang Ho Quality Award for the Chinese Catering Industry in America. No MSG. Just healthy cooking here. Located on 23rd in the Pearl district. The streetcar is your best bet for transportation.

I should have known better than to try a place that was basically void of customers on a lovely summer evening with lots of people out and about. Upon entering, the place has a dingy feel, empty of but 2 or 3 customers at other tables. We were seated at a dirty table ! Service was terrible to absent. There was hardly a soul in the restaurant and the waitress was no where to bee seen. Finally we managed to get some attention and ordered. We should have just got up and walked out The food was cold and tasted and looked like leftovers from lunch. We had to flag down (with difficulty) a food server to bring our table some dipping sauces for the fried shrimp and when she finally did, she then brought our table of 4 people, one small personal sized sweet and sour sauce to share. No hot mustard, no sesame seeds. Really, the whole thing was pitiful and cold and old and awful. She acted as if she was put out to serve us. That is my experience here. I do not suggest going here. Unless you like bad service, old and cold food. I do not know how this place is still in business!!

No delivery fee for either of their locations and the prices aren't bad. It wasn't too greasy and they got it to our remote location in 45 minutes!

I lived in the neighborhood for 12 y but had only had lunch there once. The lunch wasn't very good but I went back b/c I heard their General Tsao's chicken was rated one of the best in the city (not hard considering the quality of Chinese food in Portland is not great) and it was very good. They had General Tsao's tofu which I had never seen on any other menu so my daughter who is a vegetarian was able to enjoy it too. The sesame shrimp was very good. All very fried so don't go if you're on a diet. The service is pretty slow so don't go if you're in a rush. The ambience is non existent.

The restaurant looked nice from outside and true enough, once we went in, the look was not bad. We came during lunch, so the lady just gave us a menu for special lunch. There were quite many varieties of food with prices around US$ 6.00 including one soup and one egg roll. The lady of the place seemed trying hard to be nice but I guess she was not the kind that is good at making small talks. She wrote down what we wanted while all she said was "okay, okay". We ordered twice cooked pork, moo goo gai pan and shredded pork with garlic. The last was the best but the others were not bad either. The only thing we think would be better is if the spices are stronger and braver. But we will come here again if we visit this area in the future
Don't order for delivery
I was in the mood for Chinese and used a restraunt ap to order food for delivery in my hotel. The food was just over an hour later after I ordered. I ordered 2 sodas for $1.50 thinking they are 20oz bottels but surprised to learn they are 2-8oz cans, which on the appartment there is no size indicated. The delivery driver digs into a bag to hand me plates and chopsticks and then the fork and spoons which were unwrapped. I take my $32 order and begin to open bag to learn not all the containers are closed. Some of my broccoli beef spilled out and all over in the bag, saturating the other food containers. The peppered beef was cold and not appetizing at this point. What was not cold tasted ok but would have been better if the other food was properly closed and not cold. I do not recommend delivery from this place.
