Bread pudding...WOW!

By Mjl34 |

I travel almost every week for work and we stop at a Mexican place in EVERY city we visit. Avila's was our choice for Dallas and was probably top 5 in our all time list. Got guac, brisket tacos, chile relleno, and bread pudding. Chips and salsa were great...margaritas were great...entrees were great...bread pudding was amazing (plenty to share). My wife says "fly to Dallas and order bread pudding ASAP!". Food came fast. Prices were very reasonable.

Great Food

By Michael M |

I stop by for lunch one day and then for dinner one day great food. A place to stop when you are in Dallas Tx. Great tex mex good specials.

Yummy!

By happygapeach |

Can't rate the actual service as we had food delivered to our hotel. But I can review the yummy food! The black bean enchiladas were delicious! My son had the spinach enchiladas and said they were very good too. Side of spanish rice was very good.

Second-Hand Experience

By J L |

It was our second visit and was extremely disappointed. We went back To Avila's a second time because the Enchilada's were the best we tasted in years. We got our food the second time and we got some white sauce enchilada! We did not know there was white sauce in the first place since the waitress did not ask us. She changed the order to red sauce. The sauce they gave us was terrible. It tasted like spaghetti sauce. Something happened! They either ran out of sauce or ??? The other person we were with got the carne asada and it didn't have the red sauce it had last time either. We did question this but the waitress seemed preoccupied. She forgot our drink, etc. Everything seemed in disarray. Not sure what was going on but very disappointed to say the least.

Getting better

By John Focht |

This was my second visit, this time for lunch. Salsa is fresh, and spicy hot. I like mine spicy. I ordered lunch #5, and it was very tasty. Portions are good - I will be back!

WORTH TRYING

By AidenJMolloy |

Saw Avila's on DD&D, so this was the first place we ate on our Dallas trip. The restaurant is small, but very cozy, in a sketchy looking neighborhood. Don't let it scare you away though. The staff was extremely friendly and made our time there very enjoyable. We were seated promptly and everything was fast, efficient, and fresh. Not sure if we had mentally hyped the place up, but we were a little underwhelmed. The salsa was DELICIOUS, but a little too hot to eat much of. (Maybe for the best, so there is room for your food. Lol). As for the rest of the food, it was GOOD. Good enough to return for, but not good enough that you're going to run home raving about it. Would I go back? Absolutely. Is this going to be my new Dallas fave? I'll give it another shot and get back.

Great chili relleno but my coat was stolen

By Clarene11 |

The chili relleno is the BEST! No batter just pepper stuffed with cheese. The salsa was spicy and flavorful and the beans and rice were good too. I left my coat there at closing time and when I called the next day to ensure it was there so I could pick it up on my way to the airport they said there was no coat. :( I will likely not go back due to the coat fiasco.

Real deal TexMex from real deal people

By Allen727286 |

Wonderful Mexican food with good service in an unassuming environment. Salsa is very hot with a long tail on the heat; habit forming. Menu has all the usuals plus a few of their own twists. Look forward to more meals there.

Yummy hole in the wall

By mski1988 |

Read about this little dive on trip advisor....glad we took a chance! Delicious brisket tacos, fast and friendly service. The salsa is fresh but SPICY. Try the mango margs - they are great! Very affordable and true tex-mex.

A little bit of Mexico

By jinniferw123 |

I saw this place on Diner's Drive In's and Dives and had to check it out. I am so glad I did. Their handmade gorditas stuffed with brisket are wonderful. The salsa is pretty spicy so beware but you wont be able to stop eating it. It is a pretty small restaurant and worth the trip to Dallas.

Guy was right!

By genglertNorfolk_VA |

This place is pretty close to the airport, and the parking is limited (we backed into a space, and were so glad since the lot was full when we left, and we would have had to ack all the way out of the lot), it the service is terrific, and the food is delicious. I had the gorditas with brisket, and my husband had the brisket tacos. The servings were generous. The brisket was tender and flavorful. I am so glad we took a chance on this little treasure.

Great food, quick service, lively atmosphere

By Hugh S |

Avilas is a great intimate Tex Mex place. Very popular with locals. Quick service and great food. The atmosphere is energetic and could be a bit on the noisy side but not nearly as much as many other places. I love the Chile Relleno. The salsa is pretty spicy so be prepared. Parking can be tight so be prepared to park across the street.

KAPOW!!!

By Timothy Tittley |

Wow. This place was great. About as tasty Tex-Mex as I've ever had. Portions were great. Presentation was spot on. The brisket Chile Relleno with Ranchero sauce was phenomenal!!! Will strongly recommend.

Pretty good, among best in neighborhood

By John Focht |

I just finished dinner - beef fajita enchiladas (2) with queso, Spanish rice, refried beans, pico de gallo. Chips are okay but not great, salsa is of the smooth, blended (not chunky) style - and pretty hot and very good. Plate presentation was really good - striped layout. Beans were tasty not pasty, rice was pretty good, queso and flour tortillas fresh and tasty, and the pico was excellent. The beef had a good flavor, but was way too dry. I learned what great fajitas taste like at Mama Ninfa's on Navigation in Houston in the early 70's, well before they became popular. These had potential but were overcooked. While I was a little disappointed, I will try this place again. It has the potential to be a great place.

Highly recommended but fell short

By Richard G |

Reasonable Mexican food. This is Dallas. They could do better. Service was poor, no follow up.Food was bland, but salsa was spicy. We had a bilingual group and the staff could not be bothered talking to us in either language.

Very dissapointing

By Mragan22 |

This is the first time that Trip Advisor has let me down. We went there because of the great reviews. My whole group was disappointed. The margaritas were good but the salsa was so hot no one could eat it. The queso was like a chicken and cheese broth. The brisket tacos were ok. Our waiter had zero personality. I would skip this place.

ZERO STARS

By Cirū |

ZERO STARS. The manager and establishment is COMPLETELY unprofessional. I ordered food online and was charged and never got it. I received 3 emails about my food so I called up there. Nancy stated she thought I was coming to pick it up but I paid the $6.00 delivery fee. She asked me to call back around 1:30 or 2:00 pm when Paola or Katy was in. When I got there some old man without a mask was there claiming to be the manager. I explained to him the situation and he agressively stated he had nothing to do with it and he never charged my card however the money was already deducted from my bank account. He kept stating over and over he never charged me and would not be refunding me. He didn't even care to look at the three emails I recieved. I pulled up their website and asked him if this was his website; he said yes. I asked if this was his phone number; he said yes. I asked if this was his address; he said yes. When I asked how this was possible he stated he didn't want to argue with me and went and sat in the corner. He said he was going to call the police, and I asked for what. I will NEVER RETURN TO THIS UNPROFESSIONAL ESTABLISHMENT A DAY IN MY LIFE.

GOOD TEX-MEX!

By 81claire626 |

Avila is highly rated on TripAdvisor and similar websites, so my sister & I thought we would try it. The parking lot is very scary at night. They are very generous with the large sized guacamole. I ordered the Avila Special- two different kinds of chicken enchiladas, a cheese enchilada, rice & beans. It is very good.

Yummy!

By sweetthingphat |

I am a huge mexican - tex/mex food fan and I decided to give this place a try after reading all the great reviews. I was not disappointed! I had the chicken chimichanga with the sour cream sauce. Also had the bread pudding which was so good. The serving size of the bread pudding was so big, I was able to eat a slice of the bread pudding for 2 additional days. Was a great addition to my morning coffee. The restaurant is really small so when looking for it, if you blink you will miss it but it is definitely worth a try. Can't wait to take my friends and family over for a meal. I know they won't be disappointed.

Good food and service, served fast

By Tracey P |

We went to Avila's during a trip to Dallas. It was good food, although not the best enchiladas I have ever had. The service was good (I had asked for a brisket enchilada and they accidentally gave me a chicken enchilada, which they had fixed in just minutes). The food was served up very quickly. The hot sauce was nice and spicy. I am a big fan of spicy food, so I really appreciated the good spicy hot sauce. A big negative for me was the it was very loud, even though there was only 1 other table with people sitting at it. All in all I would recommend the restaurant.

One of my Favorites

By tahass |

I've been frequenting Avila's for almost twenty years now. My two favorite items are the pozole soup and the picadillo stuffed chile relleno. Also .... be aware: the salsa is not for the faint of heart. SPICY!!!! But, you can't stop eating it!

Heard About It, Finally Tried It

By DallasMeetingPlanner |

Several sets of friends have talked about Avila's for years. We finally had lunch there yesterday. The salsa is spicy hot, but good. The queso was a little watered down, but good. The enchiladas were just average. The margarita was decent. Just seems live average Tex-Mex. I may give it one more shot, but need to find the specialty dishes to try to understand why it's loved.

So cute!

By Christine S |

It's this tiny little place on Maple. If you blink you'll miss it. Don't blink! Delicious food. Fast service. Salsa that will clear your sinuses. If you're in Dallas and want the Real Thing, check 'em out.

Great food

By Armando G |

Great home made style food, fast and excellent service, prices are reasonable, not easy to find but well worth it.

Must have when in Dallas!

By Samantha L |

I was curious where I could find some good taco's while in Dallas. After searching, I found this little gem and was so glad I stopped. Initially, I was wondering where I was headed. The restaurant is tucked away, and actually in a little old home. The place was quaint and clean. I asked the gentleman what I should try, he informed me the Brisket Taco's were his favorite. When in Texas, always try the Brisket! These tacos were packed with amazing flavor! Customer service was great, food came out very quickly. I would be a regular if I lived in Dallas! Later, I discovered this restaurant was actually featured on Guy Fieri's Diners Drive-IN's, and Dives! I highly recommend checking this place out.

The best bread pudding ever

By krisntrev |

you would think I would comment on the tex mex but It was the bread pudding that blew me away. We were in from out of town and was told it was THE place to go for TEXAS tex mex. I thought the food was fine but nothing mind blowing. A big party came in and the owner needed out table so they asked to move us and offered us free bread pudding. We were done eating so we didnt' mind moving. This bread pudding was so delicious...melt in your mouth, i've died and gone to heaven bread pudding!! This is what gets my vote!

Best food ever

By kal p |

Not only is this the best Mexican I've had, it's probably the best meal. We were helped in the ordering by the American lady that works there. First the salsa they give with the nachos is hot, but very tasty. Don't get full up on that, it's very easy to do. We got the pork tamales and ground beef chimichanga, with half queso and tomato sauce. Absouloutly delicious. It was the first time I had tamales, they were ok. I need to learn how to make it at home.

Tasty Authentic Mexican Food

By robbiefitz |

Quickly seated and great service! I was happy to see the Diners, Drive-ins and Dives combo on the menu after just eating down the street at Maple & Motor (another Triple D spot) I did not have much room; but I was able to try everything featured on the show on one plate. The fresh made salsa is on the spicy side, the brisket in the gordita was a little dry, the pork tamale had great flavor and the pozole soup was a homerun!

Great brisket tacos!

By Ronnie Robinson, Jr |

Glad I took the chance on this place, what an awesome lunch I had! Jose was my server and did an awesome job he did! Highly recommend that you try Avila's! !

Good food, okay atmosphere

By Ed T |

We went for the food: three adults and two high school students. Everyone was happy with the food and service. ALL the dishes were great. Nice variety. Small place. Clean. Nice wait staff! Would definitely go again for a quick meal.

Fabulous Mexican Food

By MJM84 |

We visited Avila's because it was one of the places near our hotel that was included on the "TV Food Maps" app. I don't recall seeing the DDD episode with this place, but am glad we went. The food was fantastic as was the mango margarita. I had a vegetarian black bean enchillada dinner while my husband tried the brisket tacos. We were both impressed by the quality of the food and the attentive service. We would go back there the next time we are in Dallas.

Excellent food, but watch out for the red sauce

By TomT |

I was visiting my son, who lives in Dallas. He suggested Avila’s for dinner. When I walked in, I almost called him and suggested we meet somewhere else. Ambience is not Avila’s strong suit. The food and drinks we had were excellent. I had a brisket tostada and beef enchilada with chili sauce. Both were well seasoned, but not hot. Even the traditional rice and beans had additional flavors. The service was quick and responsive. A word of caution. The red sauce that accompanies the chips at the start of the meal was hot. My son advises that it is made fresh daily and ranges from hot, to hotter, to very hot.

Great place for Mexican food in Dallas

By nojosh |

Avila's is my favorite Mexican restaurant in Dallas. The place is small and the food is outstanding. You have probably already seen the great reviews so I will list my favorites from the menu. my top 5: 5. Papito's Special - I don't know who this "Papito" is but he likes variety. A good meal if you can't decide. 4. Beef Fajitas Quesadillas - not much to say here but they are great. 3. Pozole - I'm fat and hungry so I get the large. 2. Gorditas (ground beef) - this was a battle for first. They are always fresh and hot and I usually get 3. Get a side of shredded cheese. 1. Taquitos Don Tavo (all beef) - these are classic fried tacos that come 4 to an order. be careful because they're hot. The breakfast/brunch is good but I'm coming for the fried stuff. *** The salsa is spicy and that's the way it should be *** Get some Queso if you can't take the heat of the salsa. Finish off with some sopapillas and cry later about being stuffed.

Not what I expected

By jennifer m |

We hunted down Avila's because of Diner's Drive-in's and Dives. I ordered the triple D meal because it was created after Guy's visit. It came with Pozole, 1 pork tamale, and 1 brisket taco. I have read several reviews on here about how good that brisket soft taco is but am really surprised. It had zero seasoning. I wouldn't have even known that I was eating something mexican. It tasted just like a beef roast that had cooked in a crock pot. Very tender but just tasted like plain beef. The pozole was good.....tastes like taco seasoning in a soup. The tamale was also a little odd in that the masa didn't give a nice corn flavor, the masa had no flavor. The ambiance is nice and service is great. It gets good enough reviews that I would possibly try it again but definately not order the things mentioned on Diner's Drive-in's and Dives.

Dallas Anniversary

By Scott L |

Very attentive and welcoming staff. Definitely a tasty version of “TexMex”. Be warned the basic salsa is fiery. Not sure if they had a milder version since we like fiery. Smaller restaurant so be aware if you’re going in a large group. Definitely would return when we are back in Dallas

Great service, but food just so-so.

By bapa11 |

Decided to try this restaurant with family while at a conference. The beans and rice were under seasoned. The beans were bland and to be truthful I've had better from a can. We all had to eat the chips without red sauce because it was HOT and no other sauce was avaliable. I didn't eat my food because it was spicey. There was a lot of food left uneaten. And from the look of the plates of the two other diner's next to us they didn't like the food much either. However, the service was excellent. Too bad the food was not.

This is my 4th DDD

By Kiwikane |

My friend Jack is a Triple D addict and so we went to check it out and I enjoyed the food, the Triple D menu item was awesome

Excellent food and service

By Kaptx |

Simply, we think this is the best Mexican food in Dallas. The queso is great and the rellano (not fried) is outstanding. The server was attentive to us and very polite.

Not worthy of Triple D status

By HaveJetWillTravel |

Found this place on Food Network's website. Diners, drive-ins, and dives said this was one of the best places to go with tons of flavor. Well, I didn't find any flavor. To start, the chips and salsa were pretty decent. My wife ordered enchiladas, one with red chili and the other with queso. The Red chile sauce was pretty good and smoky, but the queso was just runny and bland. I had the Triple D combo with a soup, tamale, and gordita. The tamale was dry and brittle and the pork inside was unseasoned and bland. The gordita was the same bland pork sandwiched between two oil soaked pieces of bread, and the soup was ok. The service was lacking and the place was not friendly at all. I have no idea how this place is still in business.

Excellent Mexican food by medical district

By Erica D |

Staff extremely friendly and attentive. Close to the medical district in Dallas. Hot sauce is really good and addictive but beware is hot. I've had the chimichanga, fajita nachos and brisket tacos.... all which I recommend. Always busy.

amazing mexican!

By Emery |

my family and I go here on sundays after church pretty often. they have vegetarian options and amazing queso!! couldn’t be better, highly recommend

Food Was Good, Service Okay, Surprise Charge on Account Was Not

By ladyyluna |

I am really picky about Mexican food and, in that respect, they certainly delivered a good meal. It was flavorful, the service was a bit rushed but courteous, so that made up for a lot of things. Now, I'm an OCD-accountant-type individual. I know every charge, every tip I ever add--budgets and all. I remember the total after tip because it was a funny coincidental repetition of numbers, and when I check my account, the charge was over what I had signed for on the receipt. After additional math, we figured someone doubled the tip amount. The food was good enough to let it go as a mistake, but as good as the food was, I am not going back to a place that cannot be trusted to manage the receipts the way their customers sign them. So, recommendation for those on a budget, and those who don't check their account statements as often: pay in cash when you can or be ready for a possible oops here and there.

Mixed Reviews

By JoInTexas |

The tortilla chips were thick and crunchy and served warm. The salsa had an awesome "kick" of flavor. The soft corn tortillas were fresh and thick and served piping got. The queso was very tasty with cheesy creaminess and loaded with peppers. The water must be filtered as it did not have a nasty taste like in ALOT of Dallas eateries. The rice and beans were only average. My hubby really liked his beef enchiladas. I did not care for my cheese enchiladas because they were really greasy and just had no flavor except when I covered them in the queso and hot salsa. I guess I should have ordered something else.

Pretty Good

By Iowafive0 |

Came here with a couple of coworkers. Pretty good food. They were busy, but the food was FAST. Be careful.... Don’t fill up in chips and salsa, YEA... it’s that good. We’ll definitely put this place in the rotation.

A great find in D

By Kaptx |

A bit of a whole in the wall, but great food and service. Both of us had the relleno, with the sour cream and the tomatillo sauce. The queso is very good and the chips are light and crisp. Overall, an outstanding meal and authentic.

Awesome brisket tacos & salsa!

By H00sierFan |

We had a delicious meal on a Sunday afternoon. Food was excellent & service was speedy. Fresh salsa & chips. Took some to go. Yummy brisket tacos. Highly recommend!

Best chile rellenos ever

By byethebays |

Our hotel shuttle driver recommended this tex med restaurant and it was excellent. Place is not fancy but food, drink and service were all wonderful. Best chile rellenos I have ever had. A lot of food for a little money. Thanks Darren for recommendation.

AMAZING!!

By Ironguy22 |

For my first experience having Tex-Mex in Texas, this place was excellent. Service was great, however, kind of cramped inside. Prices are reasonable and the salsa was sooo good.

Very good food

By GLS6434 |

During a recent business trip to Dallas, we found this restaurant on TripAdvisor and since it was highly rated, we thought we'd try it. It's a small, cozy place but the staff was very friendly and the food was very good. They had a large menu to choose from and everyone found something to their liking. Portions were good size and the queso dip was excellent!

Not as amazing as I anticipated

By Tirzah D |

SOOOOO I have to start off with saying the service was TOP NOTCH. The staff were all so friendly and the food came out SUPER quick. I couldn't believe how fast our food was served after we ordered. The only thing I was disappointed in was the taste. I expected something fabulous because it was featured on DDD. The queso and salsa were great, but my brisket tacos were not so great. I used my left over queso to give it some flavor.

good food and service

By azucarnegra_dfw |

Out for lunch and found this little Mexican restaurant. Lots of other young professionals stopped in for lunch. Good atmosphere. Crispy chips and salsa. Can't remember what we ordered but I know it was all great.

Don't let the exterior turn you away

By comingtoyourcity |

I read all the reviews and our group decided to try it out (we are all from out of town). We arrived and the parking lot was empty and two people in our group we not sure of the neighborhood. Three of us wanted to stay because there's no way all the reviews could be wrong. We turned around and left and then turned around and came back. There were only 3 people in the restaurant when we sat down. It was full when we left. Great margaritas. Spicy salsa. Good guacamole (wished it had cilantro). Food was good and plentiful. Service was amazing! Bread pudding was awesome. We left and everyone was glad we came back and stayed.

Favorite Mexican Restaurant in Dallas

By Gary L |

Avila's is our favorite Mexican Restaurant in Dallas. Their hot sauce is fantastic and very spicy. Favorite is Black Bean Enchiladas.

Disappointed

By LoveLifeMusic |

Food was good quality but service was extremely poor. I had to chase down a waitress or host for everything. Asked for napkins and even having a toddler at the table was given only one. Repeatedly tried to remove my plate before I was finished. When I asked to have the items that were removed I was charged extra for them. I used to really like this place. It’s a hard no for me now. I gave chance after chance and all 3 individuals working that day for really bad

Mexican Done Right

By KHansard |

I tried this place a couple of days ago and upon entering had a feeling that the food was going to be good, as despite a rainy drive to get here, the place was packed and the waiter was hurried. Sure enough, starting with the chips and salsa and through the beef taquitos, I learned the food was actually GREAT. Avila is a new favorite spot for me!

Toooooo Bland for Me!

By Jim D |

I guess I over expected after reading the glowing reports on TA. We were a party of eight and the general consensus was that it was disappointing. The food was bland, served luke warm. Service was excellent. Very difficult to carry on a conversation due to the poor acoustics (an old house). A bit pricey forbear you get. DDD, you were off base on this one.

Disappointed

By Kenny M |

Salsa was spicy and pretty authentic. Price is high based on quality/quantity, but area drives it up some. We ordered an appetizer of layered dip. Basically some queso with guac and sour cream in it. Then we had our meal which was really slow to come to the table. All the food was not cold, but not hot either. They forgot about it is the what happened. Anyway, not what I expected with a 4+ rating.

Not impressed

By ewk791 |

Host sucked, waiter was great, food was average at best and over priced, 3 tacos for 8 bucks, Mjl34 if this is in your top 5 places anywhere in the US then email me and i will personally invite you to my house and my wife will easily be #1

Good but not great

By mummabear80 |

We visited Avila's after seeing it featured on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives with high expectations. Unfortunately we found it to be good, not great. The salsa was good and spicy and the chile relleno was tasty. The brisket tacos weren't the best we've ever had but overall not a bad dining experience. I think we were anticipating more because of the hype.

Simply the Best!

By Luv2dryv |

Homemade delicious Mexican food, served in a friendly atmosphere. Sure it was a bit small, but that added to the "homey" feeling of this place. Highly recommend!

Home cooking at it’s best

By Ignacio A |

Finally ate there and not disappointed; we had three dishes of good old fashioned Mexican food that brought back memories. Our moms made similar dishes and these had similar taste, appearance and flavor. Try it, you won’t be disappointed.

Finally an all around classic, mexican restaurant - gotta love tradition

By Real-Insight |

Hole in the wall says it all. Next to an auto shop near the medical district, it was such a great surprise. Great service, friendly and all the classics you love - tamales , great spicey salsa, everything homemade. Don't expect a wine list or fancy cocktails, just great food in a casual friendly environment.

Great place for dinner

By osanida |

Just had a business dinner of sorts with some colleagues. The chicken mole was great. The service was good too. I highly recommend this mom and pop small restaurant

Five stars!

By Joe |

Well - I believe this may be the best Tex/Mex food I've ever had! Eating Pepito's Special right now. The salsa is awesome, chips are fresh. Service is outstanding and fast. Prices are great. Waiting to figure out what the catch is!

Impressive

By cmbeingreal |

True and authentic mexican food! Even though some pics show a bar, it isn't a full bar. Margaritas and wine is the main offerings. The lunch special fajitas was what i ordered and it came out on a huge plate. Portions are worth the prices which are midrange. If you go durring lunch hour, be prepared to wait. My coworkers and i never been here and were greated by a wait. The place is packed because they are so good!!! Worth a visit if you are in Dallas TX!

What happened to this place?

By MVSICSPHERES |

I’ve had previous visits and the food was great. Today the rice had a funky watery taste to it. The flan was good.

Great food

By Kassandra O |

We were very happy with the quality of the food. I had awesome enchiladas and the rest of the people I was with also loved it! An awesome place we will go to again. The salsa given with chips is a little on the spicy side so be warned!

Most excellent restaurant

By MVSICSPHERES |

This restaurant took me by surprise. I was in Dallas on business I googled "Mexican Restaurants" and chose the closest one near me. From the outside I thought am I in the right place? it didn't look like much so I figured I'd give the place a chance. Boy was I surprised their food was fresh and tastefully delicious... love this place.

Bread Pudding was to die for

By Aubrey L H |

The ONLY thing that was bad, its a small family restaurant that is LOUD. Of course if the table beside you has 12 folks, all drinking delicious 'Rita's, then your going to have to talk as loud as them. FOOD: 5 stars. We had a two enchilada plate and a three enchilada plate. Both we Delicious. Heard the Bread Pudding was equally as good. IT WAS. Wife does not typically eat BP, but she ate two large slices of this one. Its worth the trip back, just for it. Fast Service, Great Food and easy to find on Maple Ave.

Tex-Mex at its finest

By scottishbum |

This place has been a North Dallas staple for as long as I can remember. ALL their food is fantastic, but if you go at lunch be prepared to wait. Try the Patricia’s.

Mole worth a trip for

By Chi-charter_cruiser |

Had lunch here with a couple of colleagues. Food came out really fast at lunchtime and was excellent. Now on my regular list for Dallas.

The best in Dallas

By Kaptx |

We think Avila is the best in Dallas. Starting with good chips and salsa and make sure you order the queso. Excellent. We both had the Chile rellano, which is not breaded. A speciality of the House. Good sides of beans and rice. Good selection of beers. Great service.

Good Tex Mex, disappointing Salsa

By Cripey |

We tried Avila's while in Dallas for the day after finding it on the Food Network ipad app and seeing that it had been featured on Diner's Drive In's and Dives...one of our favorite shows. It's not in the best part of town, but those are usually the best, right? Well, I guess not always. The restaurant looks like a house actually, and the small amount of parking is located in the back. The inside of the restaurant is very small, but they weren't too busy at the time so our party of 6 had a table immediately. Good thing, because there's really no place to wait inside...you walk right into the dining room upon entering. The service was so-so. Not very friendly at all and when one of our party asked for a cup of coffee, he was told no because they didn't have anymore. 5 minutes later though, the same waitress came from the kitchen with a steaming pot to refill the cup of a man at a table next to us??? We stopped her and asked why we couldn't have one???...she brought one, and made an excuse to us, but it was in Spanish and I didn't understand. Strange. We were brought a large bowl of chips and cups of salsa...I was not impressed with the salsa at all...not a good flavor, just spicy and boring. I like spicy, but I want flavor with the spicy too, not just the burn. I ordered the Papito's special...gualcamole tostada, rice, beans, cheese enchilada and cheese soft taco. All of the items were good, but nothing special...standard tex mex. Another in our party ordered the brisket gorditas...I had a bite and they were pretty good. Again, nothing special, but decent. I didn't try anyone else's food at the table, and while no one complained, no one really raved either. Everyone agreed that they had pretty good rice. I felt the prices were a little high for the food quality, location and service, but not astronomical. I probably would not choose to come here again on a future visit to Dallas just because it seems like a pretty standard Tex Mex place...which are a dime a dozen here in Texas! I'm not sure what made it such a stand out that Food Network chose to feature it on DD&D???

Triple D

By grootvr |

I went here because it was featured on diners drive inns and dives. It did not disappoint!!! Got the DDD special which featured posole tamale beans rice and some pork sandwich. All you can eat chips and salsa. Chips were the thinnest and crispest I have ever had, salsa on the spicy side.

Average American Mexican food

The typical Americanized Mexican food. If you're looking for real Mexican this ISN'T it..same old beans and rice with chips and salsa. Sad really

Best Fajitas Ever

By Stewart E |

The best fajitas I have ever had. The salsa was really hot/spicy but tasty. The layered queso was excellent. I had both the steak and chicken and coupled with the queso I was in heaven! I will be back.

Average mexican fare.

By James |

Heard about this spot on Diner's Drive-In's and Dives, but was unimpressed. Not bad, just not great. Good for a quick lunch if you're in the area, but don't expect anything more than standard tex-mex.

Really that good!

By Ryrimom |

After seeing that it made DD&D on tv, we knew we had to try it. So glad we did! The reviews I read were spot on. A restaurant located in a slightly sketchy part of town ( yet only a mile from million dollar condos)! Parked in lot adjacent and prayed it wouldn't be towed ( but saw lots of very nice cars so figured it wouldn't be). Very small place, greeted and sat immediately. Wonderful friendly service. Brought drinks and chips/ hot(and I do mean hot) sauce out. We ordered queso and it was delicious. I highly recommend the brisket chili rellsnos with tomatillo sauce! Also bread pudding to die for!! Can't wait to go back!

Brisket Tacos and Burritos Rock

By ThemeParkMom |

Guy Fieri from the Food Network loved this restaurant and so did we! Hubby had the brisket and I had the fish tacos - awesome! Would never have found this place on our own - neighborhood and outside of place is a bit sketchy - but we were so pleased with the food, the service and the price!

Greeted by a roach before we ever got to a table.

By Jennifer H |

We were in town for a convention at the Hilton Anatole and like to visit small places that are not chain restaurants. I chose this place because of the trip advisor reviews as I feel they give the most honest feedback. When we arrived it looked like it may have been a house converted to a restaurant. We walked in (5pm) and it was kinda dim. There were a few tables filled. Before we could be seated (less than 2 min of waiting), while standing at the entryway my daughter was greeted by a large roach that was coming right towards her feet. My son noticed and told me there was a bug and I saw it moving towards the door and the wall divider that separated the entry from the seating. I told my husband we had to leave and he told the waiter we changed our minds and left. Now I know bugs happen, but we were in a high traffic area, lights were on, during day time hours. This roach was not scared. I can only imagine what the roach activity looks like where there is an abundance of food available in the kitchen.

Not enough stars

O.M.G. This dive on the outside, is sparking clean on the inside. Had the best food I have had in years and was cheaper for us two than my own dinner the night before. Authentic and delicious. My recommendation, as the server their favourite and have it. A-MAZ-ING

Nice #Hole in the wall"

By Rene I |

So very pleased to have dinned in this wonderful place. Yes it's a hole in the wall but the food is darn good. Order the Chile Relleno wow so good. The service is also great and the staff very friendly. I love this place.

Loved it!

By Tim F |

I had the Triple D and was very happy with it. Large portions, the soup was the best. The salsa has a bite to it, but is very good. B had the fajitas and they were out of this world. Will have a return vist. The parking is a little cumbersome but manageable.

Good Mexican in Dallas

By Caren L |

We had the chicken fajitas and the beef enchilada with cheese. Expected it to be good and it did not disappoint.

Dans Burritos

By psu449 |

I came here before leaving for the airport and it was some of the best Mexican food I've had. The salsa was pretty hot/spicy!!

Best Authentic Mexican

By Marmoore66 |

We were treated by friends to this wonderful restaurant. Every dish was prepared to perfection, and the authentic spices and preparations added to our special evening. The food was fresh, each bite was thoroughly delicious, and you can request how spicy you would like your food. The restaurant is not large, but holds enough people. A reservation might be in order, though. The ambiance is totally Mexican and pleasing. Service was outstanding and friendly. It is a must to try this special restaurant.

Dinner in Dalles

By Debbi F |

When you drive up to this DDD you think...huh. I read the reviews and hoped everything is as good as the locals say. IT WAS! They served us hot chips and salsa homemade. I ordered the queso dip. It was good. Haley ordered the quesadilla. I ordered the chili relleno...no surprise. Howard's enchiladas we're delicious. Haley liked her quesadilla. Me, I LOVED my CHILI RELLENO. OMG.. best Chili Relleno ever. I ordered the poblano sour cream sauce. It was amazing. I am so impressed by the difference in the way different regions prepare and serve their chilli relleno. This was not your typical battered and fried fare. It was stuffed with delicious cheese baked and smothered in the most delicious poblano sour cream sauce. The "mushy beans" were delicious. That's the way refried beans should be. I loved the food at this place. Do not hesitate to stop by and eat. You will not be dissatisfied.

Holy mole

By Rick R |

Wow great food. Went for diner. Had super quick service. My wife had “pezole” soup. It was sooooo good. She also had Chile relleno that was one of the best. I had chicken mole and it was really tasty. Serviced w beans rice and tortillas it made for a great meal in a comfortable atmosphere. Enjoy!

BEST HOT SAUCE I'VE EVER EATEN!

By Gbusiek |

Great Tex-Mex! I wish I could have eaten every thing on the menu. I had Beef Fajitas, some of my wife"s enchiladas, layers queso, and several margaritas! It's definitely a come back...and often!

a little unusual setting, but yummy and comfortable meal

By Danielle M |

We were only in town for one day and wanted to find a place off the beaten path. Once we figured out the parking situation, we were well on our way to a great meal. You couldn't keep me out of the salsa bowl - deliciously spicy, it was a perfect introduction to Texas. I always gravitate towards enchiladas so I tried a sampler platter, and the bf had the triple D. Wish we were locals so we could try one of everything

A Triple D Mexican Dive In Dallas

By Darwin D |

This is a real Diners, Drive-ins and Dives dive. The Mexican food is just average. Two of us had the Triple D Combo, which included a tamale, a gordita, pozole, refried beans and rice. Parking is a bit of a problem. The service is friendly but very quick........they want you out as soon as possible....... for more customers. Two of us found it surprisingly busy.

Good food fast

By Rachel M |

I came here because of triple D and because its fairly close to the airport. I was seated quickly, and after i ordered, was served quickly. The food was good but not amazing (sorry, i dont remember what i ordered). The chips were good though and the salsa quite spicy. If you are from out of town please know this place is small and tables are spaced closely. Not a place to go for quiet conversation. Also the parking situation is a bit odd for a first timer. Its to the left of the establishment. I was concerned that Avilas might now be a tourist place (thanks to triple D), but the place was filled with locals in on there lunch break. Would i go back? Maybe. Since im from out of town i would probably try some place new. Would i recommend it? Maybe. I dont think its worth going out of your way for but if you are in the area (or heading to/from the airport) check it out.

Don't be fooled from the outside, this place is legit!

By briangreer300 |

We went to this location on a recommendation from one of our friends that this is her favorite Mexican restaurant ever. Do not judge this place by the outside as it looks like a small house from the outside. The food is standard Mexican fare. When we got there, we were told of the specials and brought chips and salsa. This was the best table salsa (and the spiciest!) I've ever had. Seriously, do not underestimate the spice in this salsa as it packs a punch. The queso was just okay. All of the meals were amazing and everyone was full at the end of the meal. Refills were brought quickly when asked. I have a favorite Mexican restaurant of all time back home and this place was right on par with it. If I lived in town, I would definitely come back multiple times for great food!

Better than most

By Aud7oaks |

They have a good menu, wonderful servers and fresh ingredients. I had the taquitos don tavo and they were wonderful. I loved their guacamole as well. Their salsa was a little spicy for my taste but others in our party enjoyed it. My husband had the flautas and they had good quality meat and weren't greasy. I'll definitely go back!

Now that I'm gone...

By James L |

I'll admit, I didn't review Avila's while I was in Dallas - so I could keep the secret to myself. Not a big place to begin with VERY limited parking and seating. The food is incredible and service to match! Without a doubt this place will be on my "must stop" list when I'm in town. Even the leftovers for breakfast were fabulous!

Just what I've been looking for

By Texmarc |

I have had a severe case of TexMex deprivation for a few months. So a trip to Love Field in Dallas gave me the best excuse to look for some great TexMex cuisine. The lady on my cell phone said Avila's was one of the best in the area. When I pulled up I found a small almost Toddle House looking building with several cars already in the parking lot (11:15 AM). I was greeted bye friendly staff and seated quickly. They took my drink order and promptly brought me a basket of chips and hot sauce. I ordered the number five lunch of a chile enchilada and a cheese enchilada covered in queso with rice and beans. The plate came out promptly and it was just what I was looking for, a good Tex Mex lunch. I am old enough to remember the original herrera's on Maple and Avila's carrys on the the tradition of good Tex Mex at a good price. Next time I'm making a trip to Love Field I will also make a stop here.

More TexMex than truly authentic but still very satisfying fare

By A L |

The tough thing about going to any Mexican place in TX is the reality that a restaurant is either a good Tex Mex or decently and authentically Mexican, but few restaurants can be both. You can't burnish your claim to making a proper cochinita pibil while also slathering scoops of sour cream over your chimichangas. Avila's is a venerable Tex Mex restaurant in the barrio that manages to stay above the fray and serve delicious dishes and good margaritas to satisfy a happy crowd. It isn't a huge place but you're welcomed like you just stepped into the Avila family house --literally since the front door and walkway look more residential than commercial. I started my meal with a top shelf margarita ($9.95), which was sublime and deeply flavored. They have happy hour specials from 3 til 7 pm on weekdays and all day Sundays. I ordered a couple of things before my entree just to see how they fared with them. The first was a steaming, deep red cup of chicken pozole. Served with a small plate of traditional condiments like chopped red onion, slice of like and oregano, this cumin infused elixir was extremely delicious and reminded me of my Christmas mornings. It also told me that I need not have pozole only once a year! The second side was a pork tamal ($3.25) which was fine -- a tad soggy and filled with shredded pork. I would have liked a little more sauce either inside or on top but overall it was very good. My entree was the pollo en mole ($11.95), a pretty good deal for something you find more often at a "real" Mexican joint and not at, say, El Fenix or worse, Taco Box. The mole was dark and thick, sprinkled with sesame seeds and mounds of rich and moist slices of chicken. Thankfully it was not too shredded up, so the meat was still intact and I even found a wish bone -- and that's a good sign. I tend to prefer actual chicken pieces -- leg and breast or even thighs but this version was very satisfying nonetheless. The sauce was very good and it didnt taste like it came out of a bottle of processed mole from the supermarket. The tortillas? They sure tasted homemade because they were moist and just thick enough to sop up the sauce. One other small but helpful note: upon sitting down you'll be presented with a container of fresh salsa that really is delicious but man oh man -- does it pack a punch.

Disappointed

By Kiasun711 |

Decided to go here after hearing this was a must for Mexican food. We ordered queso to start and was never served it nor was the side order taco. The salsa was very hot, which I liked, but not for everyone. Had to ask for refills on our drinks. It seemed like we were bothering them to even be there.

Great Mexican Food

By Joel S |

Found this gem and really loved the food. The queso was excellent and the salsa spicy!! I had the shrimp tacos and they had great flavor. Everyone at the table liked their food! The service was fast and prices great!!

The best in Dallas - Ft. Worth!

By Alice C |

We have been to Avila's several times a have never been disappointed! Those in our group ordered several things......Avila's Combo, Chicken enchiladas, tacos......all were great! The salsa is as referenced in many posts.....a little kick but simply outstanding. On this visit we finally tried the bread pudding and I am guessing we will never leave Avila's again without ordering the bread pudding. I do not recall ever eating bread pudding that was better than what we had at Avila's......including many places in New Orleans! The food is great with a cozy atmosphere that makes Avila's a great experience!

Very tasty

By pollymonster |

I had black bean enchiladas, my husband had the pork tacos. Both were delicious, and his side of beans was truly yummy, with really deep flavor. Staff very nice too.

Awesome food

By michell80g |

Great food and service. Drove from garland and wasn't disappointed. The salsa was great and the whacamole was fresh.

Lucky Find

By Kelly G |

We were on the way back to our apartment and asked Google Maps for restaurants in the area. We would have never found this place just passing through. What a find! It's a small place, family run. The food was excellent. The service was excellent. My chili relleno was beyond your typical restaurant. This is now our favorite Mexican Restaurant in Dallas.

Fabulous Brisket

By TravelerEdie |

We asked a cop where we could get some great Mexican food and she recommended Avila's. The chips and salsa were great…the salsa had a nice burn. I would have been happy with just that!! I had brisket tacos and they were wonderful! It was really flavorful, moist, and tender. I wish I could eat more now! My husband had a combination with tamale, gordida, and taco and he loved his food as well. I would go back in a heartbeat. Super friendly wait staff as well.

DDD Bucket List

By Diann O |

Excellent food and friendly staff. Can't say enough about how delicious the food is. Salsa is on the spicy side; but, you can't stop eating it!

The taste let-down

By mctraveler2 |

This was a late lunch. Although the fajita's were on special, the fish tacos was my interest for this visit. My first taste, the garnish was fresh and flavorful. My tastebuds were excited at this point, now, what about the rest of the story? Here comes the fish, well, ooops, yes, dry, fishy, and not much flavor was all that remained as I finished the bite. For the rest of the details about my visit, check out my blog at: http://dramblinman.blogspot.com/2014/09/the-taste-let-down.html

Absolutely amazing

By kcnicolehardy |

Oh my word! As a Tennessee transplant born and raised in Arizona, I’m always on the search for good Mexican food. This is the best I have ever had. You can tell everything is homemade and fresh. Everything we ordered was so fresh and flavorful. The complimentary salsa was hot but so delicious. Highly recommend! I can’t wait to come back to Dallas and eat here again.

Authentic Texas Mexican experience!

By j_s_lacroix |

This started by the most spiced Salsa i ever eated. After 1 min, i has getting sweaty but wanted more! Tacos and enchiladas were great. The neighbourhood is a little creepy!

In a word, outstanding!

By Lalo_de_Mexico |

Imagine trying to establish a Tex-Mex presence in Dallas, and then imagine trying to be outstanding. The Avila family did that, 40+ years ago, and those of us fortunate enough to partake after all this time can only count our blessings. Everything I've had in my few visits has been delicious; I plan to try much more from this kitchen. As much as we like the atmosphere and the friendliness, the emphasis is where it should be: the food. Parking is easy, and prices are right. If, like my companion on my last visit, you have aversions to onions, peppers, etc., please ask before ordering. I'm sure they will explain and, probably, adjust. Iconic. Historic now. Wonderful.

Great Mexican food near Dallas Love Airport!

By amynurse |

Don’t let the outside looks of this place fool you! It is GREAT food and wonderful service! Some of the best Mexican food we have ever eaten. We got a combo plate, queso and beef fajitas. Really flavorful, super spicy salsa, too. Great pre-flight meal before heading out of Dallas Love....super close. We will be back.....delicious!!!

Breakfast

By JAIR E |

Good food. Breakfast and lunch. Mole was okay but the enchiladas were awesome also the chorizo with eggs... Relaxing place to eat and great service

Great Mexican Food

By Jennifer U |

This is not an upmarket restaurant but looks like a family run business. The food is excellent and is authentic Mexican. The menu is huge and no booking was required although it was early. Drinks are a very reasonable price and so is the food. Service was quick. The waiter recommended a meal which was excellent. It looks like a small house front from the street but does have car parking at the side. This casual restaurant is one of the good ones.

Pretty underwhelming

By Tray V |

This highly-rated, almost revered, Tex-Mex joint left me disappointed, from the ho-hum food (not much better than the other Tex-Mex I've had) to the miserable service (our cutlery and drinks were virtually dropped onto our tabletops, which were so uneven it was like dining at sea). Nothing special, in my opinion.

What happened to this place?

By Five15 |

We have travelled all over the USA and the shows like Diners Drive Ins and Dives has not led us astray once, until tonight. Parking round the back was vile... the smell of rotting food bins made me gag and invaded the car when we got out so we ended up having to drive for miles with the windows down when we left. Being a Saturday night we expected it to be busy, places featured on shows like DDD usually are, but not tonight. We were seated at a tiny table by the counter so we could hear the phone calls and the guy who worked behind it coughing and clearing his throat every few minutes, nice. On sitting we got salsa and chips, we liked the salsa, it was very hot. good chips too. We ordered the food suggested by the shows, and the Pazole was nice, but not stunning. The brisket Gorditas were dull and chewy and tamale was 'old' and dry, like it had been sat for a long time, it was also chewy. The sodas we ordered came without straws, making them hard to drink down as the ice falls forward spraying you with drink. No one asked us if we wanted a top up at all. So, all in all this was a wash out of an experience, it is no longer the place that Triple D reviewed and while it may proudly show off its 'top 50 mexican restaurants in Texas' award, it clearly is not in that league any longer. Such a shame. Avoid this one... I can still smell that bin smell.... :(

Fresh Mexican Food and Great Service

By Stacey H |

I love this restaurant! The drinks and food are amazing! My personal favorite is the Limon Margarita. The only one in the area that I know of and taste like no other. I enjoy coming here because of the casual atmosphere. Also, the bartender and waitstaff are very friendly. The food is delish...I always order the brisket tacos. This is no ordinary brisket tacos, it is perfect ration of brisket, tortilla, pico de gallo, and guacamole. It will make you a believer. As and appetizer we order the flour nachos. There is no other restaurant in Dallas that has does them better then Avila's If you have not been to Avila's, I highly recommend you make a trip soon. It is hands down the best Mexican Restaurant in DFW.

So worth the trip

By Jules77788 |

This place was some of the best Mexican food of my life. It's a tad sketchy from the outside if you have never been in the neighborhood before.. but perfectly safe. The food was top notch and the service was great. Sometimes a bit too attentive... but that's better than being ignored! The sauces are homemade and so delish! Just like grandma used to make!!

Delicious enchiladas!!!

By tulsatravelbum |

Don't let the small parking lot fool you! The food is so fresh and delicious and there is a nice variety of foods to choose from on the menu. I had the brisket enchilada with queso sauce and chicken enchilada with the mole sauce. The rice and beans were also tasty. The service was also prompt and courteous.

Flavorful

By TXCarolT |

We were near Dallas today around lunch time so I searched for a restaurant that had been on Diners Drive-ins & Dives. Glad we chose Avilas. Good thing we have GPS or we might've passed the location. It is a remodeled house (I'll add a photo of the outside so you know what to look for) but doesn't feel too small once inside. Nicely decorated inside too. I had read that the salsa was hot and oh boy it was like fire ants in my mouth and they didn't have any milder option. The staff was friendly and attentive. We started with guacamole (mostly to cool off our mouths) and it was a small portion but good. My husband ordered chicken fajitas. He said they were very flavorful and would definitely get again. Generous portion and fresh tortillas. I ordered the Triple D, which was passato soup (? never had that before and it was quite tasty and flavorful), beef gordita (was ok. I opened it up and added the pico and guac for more texture and flavor), and last but not least a pork tamale (I rarely eat them but this was one of the best and flavorful I'd had). After my lunch I wanted to order the bread pudding but instead ordered a brisket taco (because I'd read they we're good & was curious). So glad I did- it was very good and will order again. So in closing : flavorful and we will return!

Hole in the wall - hidden gem!

By amissa |

This isn't a touristy kind of restaurant; this is where the locals go! When you arrive, where you can park may not be clear. There are a few spaces in front, a few in the back and there are more to the left of the restaurant, through the fence. The restaurant is converted from a house, but don't let that put you off. The food is fresh, delicious & served promptly. The salsa is spicy, so you may want to wait for your drink before you dig in. If you like queso, try Dan's Burritos - two burritos covered in queso, lettuce, pico de gallo & shredded cheese. You may want to split it with someone. Then split the bread pudding. This restaurant tends to be on the loud side, but not so deafening as to discourage all conversation. It's great for hanging out with friends. The staff is attentive, so your drinks are not often low. The tables turn quickly, so if you arrive when the restaurant is full, you won't have to wait for long (~10 minutes). It's a fixed-up hole in the wall, but definitely a hidden gem in Dallas. If you want to eat where the locals eat, this is one to try!

Outstanding food and service

By Kaptx |

Went on a Saturday night. Kept it simple as we both had the chicken rellanos. Excellent Tex Mex. Service, considering the crowd, was attentive and polite. A good value for a wonderful evening.

Good Food

By THK1971 |

The Chille Rellanos Was Very Good The rice Was Ok But I Prefer Eating At Other Places In Dallas For Tex Mex The Restaurant Is Very Clean And Service Was Good The Location Is A little Out Of The Way But This Place Is Very Popular Just Not My favorite I Prefer Mia`s Or Mi Cocina

Good and Busy

By UtahJerry |

Good food, Good Service and busy. This is a small converted house that was packed but the service was quick enough that there was no waiting for a table. The salsa served with the chips was a little too spicy for me, but we ordered their queso and it was very good. I ordered their Triple-D Combination to get a little sampling of several dishes and enjoyed everything. The pork tamale was a little dry, but the flavor was good. My friend ordered beef fajitas and the beef was very tasty. It's another Diners, Drive-ins and Dives spot I can mark off of my list and I am glad I went, but even if I lived in Dallas it's not a place I would go back to unless I lived in the neighborhood. It was good, but not outstanding enough for me to pass up some other Mexican food places in Dallas to drive to.

Best in DFW

By G Wallace |

Since a friend introduced me to Avila's in 2006, this remains my first stop on every trip to Dallas. Management and the service team remain the same and outstanding. The Avila Especial enchilada plate with truly spicy fresh salsa and a cold Pacifico cannot be outclassed. The tortillas are hand made fresh daily - few TexMex places do this. What also impresses me is that Avila's remains a home for both business dinners with guys pulling up in Range Rovers, for couples out on a date, and families... the converted house is small and intimate yet social and festive. Avila's is a special place.

Excellent food and service.

By Kaptx |

Across the board, a very good evening. Service was excellent and very quick. The food was spot on. Had the spinach enchiladas, the relennos, and the enchiladas 3-ways. Would have all again. Not fancy, but a good pour on the wine and a good beer selection. One of the best Mexican/Tex-Mex in Dallas.

Quality Tex Mex in a nice atmosphere

By Stavmar |

I take business colleagues and friends when I am in the area. The food is flavorful and consistent and I really like the red carne sauce on any enchilada. The quest was also stellar with some amazingly spicy salsa with fesh and crisp chip an essential part of any tex-mex meal. I have had the fajitas and the enchiladas for lunch and have yet to be disappointed. I rexcome a Avilas for consistent TexMex fare with a nice quaint atmosphere.

Best nachos anywhere

By Harry Z |

Great little place that works if you just want goo food and friendly service. Not much on ambiance, but who cares when the food is that good? Actual steak (or brisket) on the nachos and perfectly proportioned.

Classic Tex Mex

By KenVOttawa |

After a long day travelling we stopped in an hour before closing on Sunday night. Friendly service with chips and a nice spicy salsa was brought to the table promptly. Got some guac which was very tasty the way I make mine. We shared a steak quesadilla and brisket taco plate. The top seller the two beef brisket tacos was great with shredded tender brisket nice beefy flavor all in a soft flour tortilla accompanied by refried beans and rice. The steak quesadilla was perfectly seasoned with sautéed peppers and onions all between a crisped up flour tortilla. The kicker was the white chocolate bread pudding with cinnamon liberally sprinkled about if anything a special trip just for this treat..

Best Mexican Food I've had

By sunsurfer_728 |

Our dinner at Avila's was a revelation. I can say with confidence that This was the best Mexican food I have eaten. The enchiladas were perfectly prepared, the rice and refried beans likewise. The tortilla chips and salsa were equally as good. The margaritas were also perfectly executed. Dinner for 3 was around $70. Fabulous.

Great food, friendly staff

By Kevin C |

Ordered chile relenos with brisket and pablano sour cream sauce. My MN lips are burning a little, but in a good way. Very good food, cozy atmosphere and a friendly staff.

Super-Fantastic Tex Mex

By James M |

This is close to Love Field, so we stopped after our flight in to Dallas. Avila's had great reviews and we can confirm that the food is excellent. Prices were also reasonable. I recommend the pulled pork tacos. The salsa is on the spicy side. Worth the visit!

Great Fish Tacos

By Amanda S |

The fish tacos were amazing! quick service, fresh ingredients! Totally worth finding if you are in Dallas

By somuch2csolilx |

Had the Beef Brisket corn tacos. I was disappointed. It seemed at though the brisket was boiled and someone forgot the seasoning.

Good, Simple Mexican Food

By Sherif A |

This restaurant is a favorite of mine and my colleagues. It has simple Mexican and Tex-Mex favorites. It also has a lot of good vegetarian food. I highly recommend it. The only negatives are the parking and the size of the restaurant. It is quite small and gets pretty crowded at lunch.

Holy Bread Pudding Batman!

By missamandajones |

Boyfriend and I were looking for tex-mex after just arriving in Dallas. I found Avila on TA with good ratings so thought we'd give it a try. Not until after we ate there did I realize it had been featured on the Food Network - so no biased opinions! Salsa was very spicy and used fresh cilantro - not from a jar! Entrees used very fresh ingredients and homemade sauces - just brings simple tex-mex up a notch. We both have a sweet tooth so decided to try the bread pudding - the BEST I have ever tasted. Made with a white chocolate sauce - not too overpowering on the chocolate - just the right amount. It was UNBELIEVABLE. The portion is huge and you could share with a table of 4. Great tex-mex but bread pudding was the highlight of the meal!

Always a favorite with fresh food!

By Ethan B |

I love both the brisket tacos and chicken mole entree! The salsa is super hot and the staff is friendly and helpful.

Great place.

By Duke1424 |

Very good. Could use a little work on the refried beans but salsa, rice and enchiladas were outstanding.

Worth the visit

By Gustav M |

Great authentic Mexican cuisine. Really lives up to its reputation from being on Triple D. The salsa was spicier than other places I’ve eaten at. Waitress spoke little English so Spanish speaking is a plus to eat here. Would eat here again

Relaxing authentic Mexican restaurant good eats!

By Kathleen C |

Burritos, beans, rice, enchilada s, all good..it's the flan that made an excellent ratings delight! Chips an dips appetizer try it, all your favorites...it's the flan that stands out!

Very good from start to finish

By KleenKarCO |

The bread pudding was the best I have ever had. It's enough for two people. I had the triple d plate and would get that again. The waitress was very helpful with the menu and the service was great. I'll go back for sure next time in the the Dallas market.

If you like Mole…

By Terry P |

If you like Mole, then this is your place. Outstanding. Margarita’s are really good. The salsa is hot. Delicious and hot. Staff/owners were great.

Delicious!

By bonnefemmemaine |

This is a small Mexican restaurant in what looks to be a former residence. It is homey and the service was great and fast. I had the queso, enchiladas, and chile relleno and everything was soooo good. So glad I found this place on my Dallas trip.

Unbelievable Bread Pudding

By Rebecca L |

Good food and great service but don't come here without ordering the bread pudding! Some of the best bread pudding we've ever had! Simply delicious!

Small restaurant with big flavor, reasonable prices

By gotravel47 |

My husband and I enjoyed a meal here on a recent Thursday night while in Dallas for the Cotton Bowl. We chose this restaurant after reading Trip Advisor reviews and we were glad we did! The food was excellent and our waiter (the owner's grandson) was most helpful and friendly. He recommended the brisket taco and paired it with a tamale and an enchilada. Didn't eat the rice, so don't know how that was. Hubby loved his meal and the waiter talked us into trying bread pudding (that I never order). It was a HUGE piece, so best to share it. We still didn't make a dent in the bread pudding after that large meal. We will definitely go back to Avila's next time we are in Dallas.

Amazing Find

By Mspatsfan |

We were searching for Mexican food in Dallas and stumbled upon this gem! The service was pleasant and the owner's daughter was attentive and had wonderful recommendations for our table. From the homemade and deliciously spicy salsa and fresh, hot tortilla chips to the brisket tacos, Dan's burritos, the tamale, Chile rellenos, and the deliciously prepared beans and rice; this place did not disappoint. Find it and try it. You will not be disappointed. We're so glad we got lucky in finding it!

Wow- delicious everything! The margaritas, tamales, enchiladas, brisket taco, queso, and flan. Nothing disappointed! We look forward to coming back when we are in Dallas again. The service was also excellent- can’t rate it high enough.

Best place around d an they are opening another Avilas White Rock lake area!

These dishes are authentic, tantalizing is the Flan... Best dessert every nite mouth watering delish! Spinach chicken quesadilla, burritos, soft taco combo all dishes were great! Plenty of chips salsa offered too

One of the best in Dallad

Very rustic, but great food and service. The chips are very good, and the salsa has a good bite. The queso is excellent. One of the featured entrees is the roasted poblano. Not battered, and very good. Also, very large pepper. Great dish. A place to return to often.

Authentic

Very good food. Solid Mexican, not TexMex. I had the chili relleno and chicken enchilada. Salsa great. Only complaint is food a bit sweet and the chili relleno was not battered before fried.

Not disappointed!

You must try the brisket stuffed jablano pepper!! Very good. Don't judge a book by its cover. It looks like a tiny little house. If you blink you'll miss it. But it's very clean. Very good service. Triple D got it right!!

What did I miss

I walked here from the Hilton Anatole, as I was planning on making a grocery visit to the nearby Kroger’s. It was neither a pleasant nor easy walk (i.e. don't recommend it). I arrived around 4:45 pm. The restaurant was empty, and I was greeted by the bartender who was sitting down and doing paperwork. Two other Triple D fans (it was featured in 2016) arrived a bit later but that was it while I was there. I got the beef fajitas with a small side of guacamole. The food was average Mexican cuisine - nothing special in my opinion. Refried beans were without any lumps of beans, and the sour cream was one tablespoonful (as was the pico de gallo). Portion size was relatively small but then again I was not hungry when I left (I can't believe, however, that someone said it would feed two - if I had to share it, I would have left hungry). I did not eat the chips and salsa, so cannot comment. Perhaps I did not order the right thing, based on prior reviews. However, the price was cheap enough. Despite being empty, service was slow, as the server hung out in the kitchen rather than the dining room. Had to wait quite a while to get my check. They do take credit cards.

Oh my this was a wonderful meal!

We have been trying for two years since the Red Iguna in Salt Lake City to find great mole, and this is it!! The outside was odd but once inside we knew everything would be great. There were business men in suits and folks in shorts. The mole was sooooo good as were the beans and rice. We had to try the bread pudding because of all the reviews and very glad we did, this was the best bread pudding I have ever tasted and it is plenty to share, if you really want to :)

Wow.

Off the beaten path. It well worth the drive. Working class neighborhood. Not a lot of parking but spaces next door to use. Amazing brisket tacos! Watermelon margarita!!! We found it on DDD website and made the trek. No regrets.

Great homey Mexican food

Decided to give this place a try after searching for restaurants to go to while we are in town, plus Guy from DDD has been here, so it’s gotta be good! It’s located in a small house but is very clean. The chips and salsa are so addicting, even though it’s spicy. Great queso as well, although it’s a little too runny. I had a yummy prickly pear margarita. Both our entrees were good- my husband had the brisket tacos and I had the plate with a taco and cheese taco. The rice and beans (the beans had an amazingly smooth texture but not runny) were also good. Glad we tried this place!

Very good (or better) Mexican food, just like our local neighborhood joint

We have a favorite, comfy, homey, little, family-operated Mexican restaurant near home. Avilia's could take its place and we'd have no complaints. I had the posole (nice little spicy zing) and a pork tamale. My wife fell in love with the brisket tacos (super moist and tasty). In this case, the "Very Good" rating is mine. My wife would have given it an "Execellent." We would definitely go back the next time were in Dallas. Warning: Avilia's can be hard to spot while driving. The street addresses in this neighborhood are inconsistently posted. It's also on a busy street that doesn't allow for many opportunities to drive slowly, like the tourist you are, while looking for the place.

Top notch food with a very comfortable interior

I came here with a party of 5, and we all ordered different meals. With a little taste of everything on the table, we were all deliriously happy with all of the tasty combinations. There are several stand-out meals here, and no way to get the order wrong. My personal favorites were the ground beef dishes. The tacos and enchiladas were very savory, with perfect seasoning. Considering the prices, the bang for the buck is fantastic.

Great food and drinks!

We found this place on Yelp during a business meeting and it was the best choice! The drinks were amazing and the food was even better. The homemade tortillas were some of the best I've ever had. The staff was very friendly.

Great hole in the wall tex mex in Dallas.

Service was great, we were greeted an seated immediately. We both ordered margaritas and they arrived in minutes. The salsa is spiced perfectly, and the waiter made sure we had fresh chips every chance he could get. Def visit again.

Decent over-priced food, thieving staff

Tried this restaurant for a Friday night dinner with friends and was quite happy with the salsa/chips, somewhat happy with the food, disappointed in our incompetent waitress and outraged to find out a week later that my credit card was charged $3 more than I authorized. The waitress (who appeared to be a manager or owner) got our checks incorrect not once but three different times, making us wait long after we had finished our meal. When I finally got the correct check I left a small but reasonable tip to reflect the poor quality of service received. Management refused to resolve the issue when I called. I reported this to both my credit card company and Dallas PD, and will NOT be returning to this establishment. Stay away!

Great restaurant

We still think the best Mexican in Dallas. The service is very good. As to the food, excellent. The rellenos are a standout. The queso is outstanding. Decent chips and salsa. Good drinks at happy hour.

Great Brisket Tacos

By Scott Michaels |

This place is a great mom and pop Tex-Mex joint. I started with the chips and salsa. A word to the wise....the salsa is hot. For the entree, I had the brisket tacos. The meal was very simple, filling, and the brisket was bursting with flavor. This was the first time I've had brisket in a taco and it was superb. If authentic Tex-Mex cuisine from the food to the atmosphere is your thing, Avila's should definitely be on your must visit list.

We were in Dallas and wanted Mexican food. I looked up Guy Fieri's website and found a list of all the restaurants he reviewed on his TV program. One old program mentioned Avila's on Maple Avenue. We decided to visit. The food was great. The best was the tamale with this fantastic sauce. The chili relleno was very good. No beers on tap, but the usual bottled beers from south of the border. The restaurant was full of people so the word is out that it is the place to go. The restaurant is worth the trip.

Eat, Reflect, REPEAT!!

Delicious Mexican food....worth telling your family & friends about!! We will definitely be back. Cannot believe we are from the DFW area and have never experienced this hidden treasure. Don't miss it! Exceptional service & food. Cannot wait to get back to eat more delicious salsa & queso....and the best chicken chili relleno ever!

As good as Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives said

Great little restaurant, with friendly service and good prices! Fresh ingredients and sumptuous taste. The salsa is actually spicy!

Outstanding food and service

Stopped by for lunch. Outstanding food and service. Not the fanciest place, but who cares. The rellenos are roasted without batter and are great. Very good chips and salsa and the side of queso is excellent. Good skinny margaritas. Excellent and quick service. Inexpensive. Parking is a little crowded.

just as good as Guy Fieri said it would be!

We decided to make a special trip to eat at Avila's after seeing it on Diners Drive Ins and Dives. They showed the brisket tacos and posole so they were on our must eat list. It's a small place that hasn't changed or been updated in years but don't let that out you off. The place was very clean and the employees super friendly. We had a small queso that was enough for several people, chips were crisp and fresh. Brisket tacos were the best I have ever eaten and stuffed full. The brisket stuffed poblano was one of the best ever. Our son had the basic crispy beef tacos and they were very good. We shared a small cup of posole and it was just as good as my real deal homemade. The beans and rice were the usual nothing special. The. Negro Modelo was frosty straight from the bottle. Our bill was right at $50 including tip for three. We live an hour away but would definitely go back again!
