Northwest Hills Gem

By healinglove84 |

Growing up in Northwest Hills, you're used to the changes of restaurants throughout the neighborhood. One great change was finally putting in a delicious Mexican food restaurant. Azul Tequila was what we were all waiting for. Great food, good service, strong drinks and a beautiful patio area. I recommend the Mole enchiladas, one of the most authentic Mole sauce I've ever had! Even if it's busy you still have a great spot to sit, patio or their covered outdoor area. We try and go at least every 2 weeks, and every time we are just amazed at how consistently good the food is. The patio is our fav new place to sit, pretty lights, and sometimes live music! Come enjoy this northwest hills gem we adore!

I want this place to be good

By Ryan_s_phipps |

I’ve given this place so many tries and every time it seems to get worse. The entry smells like the pipes are bad, service is always slow and host/hostess’s and wait staff seems put-out to provide service. Food always seem to have issues... wrong orders, burnt food, sloppy plated and on to-go orders no tortillas every time. The clean up staff always seems to be the friendliest always smiling as they pass your empty glasses. Take the extra 5 minutes to pass this place to the next Mexican Food Restaurant.

Spicy Margaritas!!!!

By Rik S |

Was looking for a close place to take the wifey for lunch and just randomly drove past this place.. We will be back super fast service and omg the margaritas were so so yummy!!! I already know what I’m having next time we come! Great job guys thank k you so much. Really friendly staff and the food was delicious! I rate my Mexican places on how good the salsa is and this place has some GOOD SALSA!

Good Cabrito!

By 1st_WorldCitizen |

I attended an event at Azul Tequila this past weekend and when I stepped into the restaurant, it was dark and not very inviting however, I was directed to the patio where the event was to take place and believe me, it was a glorious transformation. The huge fenced in patio had bamboo and pecan trees, giving the ambience of a private home patio without the unsightly views of a parking lot and street traffic. There was also a stage in the patio where live music is offered at scheduled times. As I perused the menu, I sipped on a Jorge Negrete Margarita and decided on the CABRITO AL MAGUEY, South central Mexican style barbacoa, goat meat marinated with chile guajillo and spices slow cooked on maguey leaves, served with salsa verde, Mexican rice and charro beans. The salsa verde was a bit on the mild so I substituted the red salsa used for the chips and salsa which added a little more flavor and heat. The goat well prepared very well and satisfied my taste buds, however I was not too well pleased with my choice of wine, Lechuza Garnacha, a decent Spanish red but a bit too bold to pair with the goat. Our server Mari was phenomenal. I will without a doubt return to order the Mole Poblano which I got a sample from my tablemate and it was absolutely awesome!

Great food, but the interior is inferior.

We had been to Azul Tequila on Ben White a few years ago, and really liked it. There are many excellent Mexican restaurants between our house and there, so we never went back. We were happy to see that they opened a new location nearer to our house! I got the Cochinita Pibil at the suggestion of our server. From the menu: "COCHINITA PIBIL Spicy Mayan version of pork barbacoa, marinated with achiote sauce, cooked on banana leaves. Served with salad, pickled onions, Habanero peppers, plantains and black beans." The pork was very good, but the plantains paired with pickled onions was inspired. My wife got: "COWBOY RELLENO Shrimp casserole stuffed polano pepper smothered with chipotle sauce and topped with Monterey jack cheese." She liked it a lot too. Don't know why they called it Cowboy", though. For dessert, we shared a flan, which was very good also. The interior is spartan: cement floors paired with what looked like varnished 2x4s on the ceiling made for a noisy dinner. They have a deck outside, which we plan to use next time. We're looking forward to trying many of their dishes!

Good but not amazing

By Peter M |

Food was good but not amazing Service was excellent Clean Good portions and the price was reasonable

Good but uneven food quality and spotty service

By Jay F |

Had a great lunch here a month ago and found ourselves nearby at dinnertime and decided to stop in. Had a disappointing ceviche that was simply bland. A chile con crema was pretty good. The goat was very good, with excellent tortillas and good rice and beans. The quesadillas was almost good, but disappointing. And service was very uneven and very slow for ordering and picking up the credit card to paythe bill. Food was generally above average but service was pretty poor, resulting in the average rating. Overa.l, disappointed given our enthusiasm on our first visit.

Interior Mexican specialties

By Kathleen C |

My husband really enjoyed his braised pork served with plantains and pickled onions. The salsa was very thick with just the right amount of heat. The chips were also crisp and not too thick. I thought I'd try the flautas, even though they were baked. The chicken was well seasoned, but the shells were limp, so I just ate the meat with the lettuce and tomato side. There was no guacamole, which was a disappointment. The service was good and we were able to bring our dog onto the back patio, which had many fans to keep you cool. Stick to the interior dishes and you won't be disappointed.

Solid Interior Mexican Food

By CharlieinTexas |

Somewhat hidden restaurant, off 2222 headed towards Mesa. Comfortable, although modest interior. Nice covered patio, and even nicer uncovered sitting area with a small stage from Balcones. Friendly, prompt service. Varied menu of interior Mexican and Tex-Mex choices. Various tilapia dishes with different sauces were, as reported by my family, very good. Tasty frozen margarita. The shrimp and fish ceviche was just okay, as the fish was a bit mushy. I had the Pescado (tilapia) Yucateco, very tasty, as were the plantains. Cecila Criola just okay, according to my wife. She said she would not order it again. Reasonable prices. Certainly worth trying, and as this is pretty close to our neighborhood, we will be back.

Azul Tequila moved to Mesa Drive from Dry Creek in 2024. 2nd location in South Austin on US290/Lamar, next to Target.

By obrimark |

Great restaurant, decent food and portions, with potent Margaritas, but Azul Tequila moved from Dry Creek to Mesa Drive near Steck in 2024.

Food was excellent but place can be really noisy

By Texaslonghorn31 |

Food was excellent. Service was ok but somewhat slow (took almost an hour to get our main meal). Noise level was beyond loud - to the point that I could barely hear what the person across the table was saying. Also we were seated at a table right next to the bar and as I was in a chair with my back to the bar, all the people at the bar getting drinks or waiting for a table, basically had me blocked in my chair. I had to get two people to move so that I could back my chair up enough to get out to use the restroom. And there were several other open tables we could have been seated in. Also the parking lot is very small. Again the food was very good but not sure I would eat here again because of the other issues mentioned.

Good time...

Mostly enjoyed the atmosphere as provided by the band playing inside on a cold Friday evening. Food and drink was great.

A REAL Mexican Dinner

By russminton |

This is a Mexican restaurant with a difference. The feature specialties from within the heart of Mexico in addition to the usual Tex-Mex fare. The Cabrito al Maguey; marinated goat meat with spices is outstanding and well worth trying. The Pescado Veracruzano is as good as we have had anywhere; well prepared and presented and very flavorful. As a starter, the Ceviche Costeño is excellent with a fresh citrus bite. This is an excellent place for dinner; if you can find it. It is a bit out of the way, but well worth the search.

Very good interior Mexican cuisine

By Trail816834 |

Great neighborhood restaurant with lots of seating options and a very nice outdoor patio. A good friend who loves Mexican food and mole in particular says Azul Tequila has the best mole of any he's tried, and he's a world traveler.

Good

By PeterPakChong |

Tasty food with my daughter. Nice atmosphere. I liked it. Nothing was that outstanding but nothing wrong either. We had a nice time.

Unpretentious local spot - great food.

By John K |

Great little restaurant for excellent TexMex. Pork and banana tortillas yummy! Why go big chain restaurants when you can go local?!? Cold beer, great food, welcoming service. What more could you ask for?

Great Interior Mex.

By Jay F |

Went with friends for lunch and split 4 dishes. The chips are good but included a lot of small pieces. The salsa was very good. Then had the Sopes with blsck beans and chorizo, and Jalopenos stuffed with fish. Both were quite good. For mains we shared a Chile Almendrado (stuffed with seasoned beef) and Conchita (pulled pork). Both were good. Lots of interesting things on the menu. I look forward to eating my way through the menu. Our service was excellent. Recommended.

Cheap Tex-mex

By Jim N |

Nice neighborhood Tex-mex restaurant. Good lunch specials. Food Quality can be inconsistent some times. Nice outdoor seating area. Service is usually good. Small parking area but has street parking.

Real mexican good size plate food,

By Antoine D |

Comfortable place and nice patio. Our waiter was really, really nice with us. Their menu gives you a lot of choice for food, and for drinks too. Food was very good, fastly served, and good amount. Price is very raisonnable.

Fresh, fast and friendly

By dogstargems |

Love this local restaurant. The owner and staff are welcoming and the food is delicious. Great guacamole.Fresh chips. The typical items are on the menu, but many other choices are there to make it interesting. I like the steak with peppers and onions. The wine choices are just ok, but there is a good bar and the bartender is wonderful. They are open for weekend brunch from 10-2, but we have not tried it yet.

Salsa!!!!

By Joe D |

We had a team outing here for the company that I work for, and the salsa and cheese dip were both awesome! Careful on the salsa if you are sensitive to hot (spicy) foods, it is more at the hot level.

Good Not Great

By YIISD |

We had dinner on a Saturday at this restaurant and did not have much of a wait. The margaritas were very good and the food was tasty. Service lacked a little but overall was okay. The chips and salsa were the best part of the meal. The chile con queso was good also. We will eat here again if in the area.

Excellent Food and Take Out Service

By CharlieinTexas |

My wife and I have taken out from this restaurant three or four times during the past month or so. Fajitas are excellent. Portion sizes or very good. Black beans and refried beans are tasty. Ceviche is well prepared. Service on the phone and delivery to the car outside have been friendly and efficient. The mediocre or negative reviews are surprising. My wife and I think this place has really good food. Prices are reasonable too.

Casual, Good Food and Friendly

By Barbara-In-Austin |

This very casual, small, neighborhood restaurant does Interior Mexican food. We enjoy Sunday brunch there in the outdoor area when the weather is nice. Sometime they have musicians playing on the small outdoor stage. The wait staff is very welcoming and friendly.

Delicious - extraordinary service and food quality (neighborhood secret)

By Gwhized |

Tyler greeted me with a warm smile and thoughtful recommendations for a delicious early dinner. I chose the Cochinita Pibil and was completely delighted -- delicious plantains as a foundation for a lightly spicy roast port accompanied by handmade corn tortillas, black beans, and pickled onion garnish. The whole experience was gustatory excellence. I went on to sample the mole sauce -- perfecto! I'll be sure to come back on the weekend when there's music on the patio. Please don't tell everyone about this wonderful, quiet hideaway of tasty and authentic interior Mexican cooking? If you can find it, you deserve it. I hope to be able to get a table on the weekend.

Mopac exit 2222 head west. After big right bottom of right 1st light take right. Rest. on left

By Greg A |

My boss wanted to meet me for lunch and suggested this Mexican Restaurant I had never heard of. I beat him there and as soon as I sat I was presented with a big bowl of warm chips and a fabulous tasting salsa. For my lunch I ordered number 2 which is a chicken enchilada with rice and beans and something I have never tried, Tortilla Soup. When served the soup was so hot I waited and took my first melt in your mouth bite of my chicken enchilada which is a favorite and staple for me at any Mexican Restaurant. Then for the first time I had a spoonful of the tortilla soup and was shocked what I have been missing all these years. I have been a soup lover for years and that was even better than some of the soups I make using my Grandma's recipes. All this for $6.00 oh heavens yes I will be back.

Blah.

By Frankly T |

Blah food. Overpriced. Slow service. Forget it. Dull fish dish. Enchiladas were blah. Lunch food at dinner prices.

Solid Food

By Waunderlust |

Pretty solid Mexican food. The price is exceptional. I ordered the carne guisada and it was very delicious. My sister ordered enchiladas salado and she really enjoyed them. Heavy margarita is recommended.

Great Neighborhood TexMex and Interior Mexican in One!

By Warm Weather Traveler |

This location has been a myriad of things, including sports bars and family eateries, and all seemed snakebit. The new incarnation of Azul has finally gotten it right, and the place is now jumping. The concept is neighborhood, reasonably-priced TexMex...with a side of Interior Mexican and a wealth of tequilas...and it works. Definitely worth finding it hidden behind the Shell station on 2222 between Mesa and 360. Parking is horribly insufficient, however, so be prepared to walk from a neighboring side street.

Great TexMex in N Austin

By PenguinScott |

Was in town to visit the brother and his family, who live in the area. They say this place has been trying to open for some time and they are happy it is finally, having dined here a few times, they say the food is hit and miss, but has improved as they, perhaps, get the hang of things. The service was very nice and prompt. The atmosphere is decent, relaxed. They advertise their happy hour, which seems to be about average. I thought the prices of margaritas could have been a bit cheaper for happy hour, but they offered some apps for half off. Great chips and salsa, and we got the queso, which was nice and creamy. I had the taquitos, which exceeded my expectations. They were quite flavorful and had a wonderful texture. Great beans and rice, as well.

Great breakfast/lunch spot by the creek

By XTOS |

Enjoyed the huevos rancheros & chips & salsa. Good food at good prices. Nice outdoor patio area. Good service. Overall a good choice for lunch or breakfast.

Good food

By mr_larry_smith |

This out of the way Mexican restaurant is worth the search. The venue is unassuming, service excellent, menu diverse and food very good.

Great food and service at reasonable prices

By Mark A |

Really fine local restaurant. Tex-Mex and more, with fresh chips and salsa, excellent fajitas, and a surprising variety of options. Service is excellent, friendly, and helpful. It can get pretty loud in the main dining room, but there are additional rooms, and a lovely outside patio that features live music and nice shade. Prices are moderate, with happy hour appetizers and drink specials. You're likely to meet the owner, who really cares about your experience being the best.

Disappointing food

By Terrell |

We have visited Azul Tequila on numerous occasions for happy hour. The appetizers are good and the drinks ok. Normally we were there for lunch if other than HH. Last week we went for dinner. Not only was it bad, it was bad. The fajita beef wasn't eatable and the rice was just rice. We were charged extra for requesting onions on the enchiladas. The service was good as we went early. Go for happy hour but don't go for the food. Much work needs to be done there.

Good lunch spot

By SkeeterJ113 |

This place has $6 lunch specials that are pretty good and considering the area that's cheap. They get you on the $2.50 ice tea though. Service is usually slow and seems confused at times but the gal that tops of your drinks and refills the chips and salsa is amazingly fast and efficient. Foods above average and service is generally below average. Worth a shot just don't be in a hurry.

Delightful

By Joe B |

This is a quiet neighborhood restaurant with a great backyard. I prefer the interior Mexican dishes, especially the mojo de ajo (garlic tilapia). The Tex Mex is great too. I like the enchiladas, the tortilla soup and the tacos. Can't go wrong!

Very good Tex- & Interior-Mex

By Accrusion |

We've been here a few times since they opened in fall 2014. Our latest visit was very successful, and we expect to keep going back. I've had their brown-mole enchiladas in the past, and liked them among the best in town. My wife tried the green-mole on our latest visit, and liked it only medium well. I tried my first interior dish, the Chile Relleno en Almendra. I lovvvvvved it. Creamy & complex sauce; wonderful filling in the chile. Our teenage daughter always gets nachos, often to go. These are very competently done; great for kids; but not especially different from nachos elsewhere.

Couple of Yankees thought it was pretty good

By Thomas Z |

We used to live in Texas and now live on the east coast. That being said you can find good Tex-Mex and Mexican food almost anywhere. We did enjoy our meal there. My wife loves Pastor and theirs were very good. One of our friends had some type of shrimp swimming in a red sauce. Didn't look that great in the bowl but was delicious. Would certainly go back again. Good service

Not so happy "happy hour"

By luvplayacar |

I've given this restaurant a try multiple times and still am not satisfied. I went to "happy hour" and left with a $32 tab for 2 margaritas while splitting nachos with 4 friends. Ridiculous prices! Subpar food - the beef fajita meat wasn't even edible - I had to slip it into my napkin it was so tough. Skip this and go elsewhere! Maudie's, Santa Rita, El Dorado...

Great neighborhood restaurant

By Marcia K |

Azul Tequila is a wonderful new addition to the Cat Mountain/Mesa/2222 area neighborhood. An extension of the well known Azul Tequila on South Lamar, it offers the same great food, both Tex-Mex and Interior Mexican at a very reasonable price. It also has mariachi on the weekends, which is fun. I have eaten several dishes from both sides of the menu at different times and enjoyed them. One of our party had a fish dish that he thought was wonderful as well! The staff is very friendly there and very attentive to your table. My only drawback has been that the last two Sunday afternoons when we ate lunch after church, the food was very slow in coming out to the table. The restaurant was not crowded at all, in fact almost empty at that time of day (2 PM), but the food still took a long time. This has not happened at other times of the day and week, so I cannot say that it is slow all the time. but the wait is worth when you taste the food!!! We will still continue to eat there frequently.

Interior Mexican hidden gem

By Picky Sista |

I was visiting family in Austin and we went to Azul Tequila on a friend’s recommendation. This hidden gem is worth it! It is not just another Tex-Mex restaurant. There were 5 in our party and we all enjoyed our choices ranging from chicken mole to spicy shrimp. I will definitely dine here again next time I am in Austin!

Hidden away but worth a visit

By Tony H |

This relatively new mexican place is easy to miss, tucked away on a tight curve on the hilly, windy 2222 in north austin, but if you can find it, its worth dropping in. We were there for lunch and the enchiladas were good, if not out of this world. My wife had the mole chicken. Good mole sauce, mediocre chicken meat. We intend to go back and try out their happy hour and supposedly huge margaritas. I hope this restaurant can thrive in this somewhat cursed location. Good luck guys!

Service was poor

By Greg W |

Went here for a quick dinner after a boating afternoon. It took a long time to get our food and our drinks. Perhaps they were understaffed. The food was good, but nothing special. If you're looking for real good Mexican food I would select another restaurant. But if you was something casual that is downscale, this would be a decent choice if they get their service issues fixed.

Great authentic Mexican food

By Marianne R |

They have great interior Mexican food as well as TexMex. One page of their menu is devoted to authentic interior Mexican food and the other is traditional TexMex. You can't go wrong with either. Margaritas are excellent as well and so is the patio!

you will like this!

By 1jojo |

New location, same menu. Great quality food and service. interior can be loud, just drink more tequilla! selection is good, chili rellanos recommended.

Out of the Way But Worth the trip

By Jim T |

Located down a winding side-road, this place would never be noticed if you just didn't happen to be driving past it, and yet their small parking lot was full all three times we've been there. Service over our three visits was somewhat erratic, but always friendly and happy to help. One mark of a good place is it's chips & salsa, and the tangy sauce here paired with thick crispy chips satisfies. But don't fill up, because the extensive menu gives you plenty of choices, and we haven't found a bad one yet. Somewhat on the pricier side (most entrees run $11-13, appetizers up to $8) but not at all fancy. indeed their patio is quite casual and the inside bar adds to the ambiance of the room. The 'Ritas are good and teh food is tasty--do you really need to know anything more than that? We'll be back...

Mole!

By Doron B |

Mole like I remember having 50 years ago in the jungles of the Yucatan. Authentic and delicious. The mole poblano comes with a char grilled chicken breast.
