Disappointed

By Christina W |

I was excited to have lunch here at the UVillage location because I typically love the Garlic crab noodles. This time I was very disappointed. My noodles were hard and the crab meat seemed old. It was very dry and fishy tasting. I also had the Singapore noodle dish. The noodles were overcooked and the chicken pieces looked not so fresh either. The only thing I did enjoy was the chicken wings they were delicious. Overall I give the food a 3 as I didn't enjoy most of the food. I feel like for the price the food should be much better quality.

Crab Dish very disappointing

We came here for lunch and I ordered the garlic crab noodles. I didn't think to ask if the crab was fresh...this is Seattle, known for fabulous seafood! The canned crab was hardly visible in minute pieces and not very tasty. I was so disappointed. My two friends, however, chose prawn dishes which they said were very good. Our waiter was professional and welcoming and our food came quickly. I might give this restaurant one more chance.

Very Seattle

Visiting from out of state, I found this restaurant a far better look at Seattle than joining the tourist crowds around Pike Place Market. The food reflects the Asian influence which is all along our west coast and we saw a wonderful blend of people enjoying a wonderful blend of flavors and foods. I went with a bowl of vermicelli noodles with grilled chicken and spicy shrimp - just great. Our daughter chose PhoGa - a classic Vietnamese dish. Loved the cold local beer, and the great outdoor setting though the smoke from CA forest fires is definitely visible this far north.

Worst Vietnamese street foods ever!

Our experience at the Ba Bar @ University Village is so bad that we don't understand why this place was rated so highly. As part of a 3 day Pho crawl in and around Seattle, we decided to order the Pho tai nam here... The bowl is super small and the broth was so bland. Little meat and the nam meat was so fatty that we felt like we were eating fat. Just a terrible Pho. We also tried a few other apps... the beef carpaccio, the Saigon chicken wings and the imperial pork rolls. The wings were super salty. The pork rolls were tiny (two rolls for $ 12). The beef carpaccio is decent. But again, very expensive, tiny portion... Definitely nothing like proper street foods...

Conflicted

Wanted to love this restaurant but came away disappointed. I ordered bun cha Hanoi style and I just didn't know how to eat it when it arrived. The bun cha I had in Hanoi (twice) came with everything on the side, but it was added to the soup, rather than eaten separately. The bun cha here was just messy and hard to enjoy.

Not bad but not great.

Great service, nice ambiance for indoor and outdoor dining. I was disappointed in the food and it was expensive for what you got.

Ambivalent about this place

By Wildwoodatheart |

This place looked really promising. It was busy, but we were seated quickly. The atmosphere is very modern and doesn't really invoke "Vietnam" or "Street". But it was pleasant. Our waiter was great, attentive. Our food arrived quickly. We started with the fried oysters. They were quite good. I had the spicy pork belly for dinner. I enjoyed that there was a lot of flavor, and it was nice and spicy. But, it was also quite greasy, so I couldn't eat a lot of it. My daughter enjoyed her meal more than I did, but I don't remember what she ordered. I had a shrub to drink, and it was delicious. I think I would have liked this place a lot more if my meal hadn't been so greasy. Prices are a bit high, but U Village tends to be expensive. I'd try this place again.

Walked In Clueless.

Used to go to the restaurant in the same space, different theme. They've turned to Asian Fusion. I'm a 'go with the flow' guy, so, let's see what we can order. I had the duck dish, my buddy had the all-in Pho. Full bar, so we had cocktails as well. Great service (we were on a time line), good quality. Wish I could add photos.

Service was GREAT!! FOOD was so-so

Service was GREAT!! FOOD was so-so. INTERIOR was nice. (dined for happy hour on 9.3.2024 at 4pm w/3 adults) -HH Ba Bar Sliders (ok) -HH Imperial Rolls (good! should've order 2) -10 Wings (ok yet crispy) -HH Chicken Salad (small and ok) Dined inside as it was hot outdoors.

Very slow service

By Pamela A O |

I've been there twice now, both for dinner. Food is OK. Service is exceedingly slow, even when the restaurant is not at full capacity. It's not so much the wait staff. It's the kitchen. Once you order, it can be a good half hour or more before your meal arrives. The food is OK, but I couldn't stop thinking that I could get the same thing, only better and cheaper, at small ma-and-pa type establishments in Little Saigon.

First Time Visit

What a great lunch experience with a friend! With this being my first time at the restaurant, I was not sure of what to choose. While I am not sure of her name, the receipt showed "S". I chose the prawn, cucumber & pineapple salad. Served promptly, it did not disappoint. I would recommend this place if you like Asian cuisine. And, our server was courteous and efficient. .

Excellent Vietnamese!

Ba Bar is one of our favorite Vietnamese restaurants in Seattle. They have 3+ locations now and this one, in the University District, has beautiful interior design and a nice ambiance. Great food as always and reasonably priced. Highly recommend!

HAPPY HOUR

By adeledupre |

The bartender Joe is SUPER versus an uppity female manager who didn't want to credit me for my frequent dining lunch card even though I told her I had already ordered three dishes through Uber Eats.Whatever! My noodle soup I had during Happy Hour was average because it was one of the most reasonably priced because I wanted to try this new place. I came back a second time for a soso lunch with a friend to notice that King County Health Department had posted a sign that said COULD IMPROVE ....Need I say more?

A well located restaurant.

It's a Vietnamese restaurant that is fairly pricey for that type of food. Atmosphere is good. They don't take reservations. Parking is free in the Village.

Gave it a second try

By Sandy N |

Busy, lively spot. Waiter was good. I was here once before and was disappointed. So a friend and I came back and I tried the Sai Gon Chicken Salad. It was OK, but not memorable. There was a lot of cabbage and not much flavor. However, I took my leftovers home and the next day, it tasted better. I think the herbs and dressing had a chance to flavor the cabbage a bit more. In the future, I think I'll head for one of the other restaurants in the U Village.

it was so good 10/10

It's Good But There's Better

I was intrigued by it's street food statement, because I've had asian street food which can be really good for not much money. In this case, it has a very nice atmosphere, friendly staff and OK food. This place fits in with the upscale shops and restaurants in the U Village. I had the grilled chicken bun bowl. It had a very nice presentation and in general the meal was good. The question in my mind was even though the chicken was warm, when was it cooked. It was grilled but it looked like it had been grilled earlier and warmed up. I've had the meal at other places and know what fresh grilled looks like. Anyway, the meal was tasty, no complaints about it.

Great experience!

This was my second time in a Vietnamese restaurant and I was pleasantly surprised. All four of us thoroughly enjoyed our meals. The food was excellent as was the service. Our waiter Bin was very friendly and efficient and enhanced our experience. The atmosphere was delightful and the music was nice and low enough so we could have a nice conversation. The lemongrass Beef and the Lemongrass Rockfish were excellent and very healthy. I had the pandan iced latte and absolutely loved it so we tried the pandan cake to share for desert which was also a wonderful treat. I would not think twice about returning. Reasonably priced as well.

"Street food" in an upscale environment....

By smccallister |

Ba Bar calls itself "Vietnamese street food" but the owners also argue against the cheap pho that's common in Seattle. So I guess we're in the "street food elevated" terrain -- which it turns out is a pretty good place to be. The spot in University Village is at the southeast corner of the shopping center, and the space is light and sports a bright blue exterior. The menu is varied and covers the usual bases such as vermicelli bowls and, of course pho. The beef pho has a wonderfully silky and subtle broth -- really outstanding. My wife had the vegan pho, and it was very good too, with two types of tofu and lots of vegetables. We had an app of pork filling in puff pastry that was very good, also. Service was quick, helpful, and unobtrusive -- what more can you ask? We enjoyed this place and will definitely return in the future...

Another outpost for my First Hill favorite

By beasleys-mom |

I eat a lot at Babar on 12th Avenue. That's mostly for lunch. For dinner I've tried this one. Because it is in UVillage there's free (and generally available) parking. Makes a difference on a rainy night. menu is pretty much the same--really reliable, if narrow, range of Vietnamese food. Dinner menu is different from lunch, but idea is noodle soups, noodle bowls and various other dishes. My only sadness is that they're light on vegetable dishes. (There are vegetables in the noodle bowls of course, so it's not like there are no vegetables.) Anyway, food is really good, comes pretty quickly. Was there on a Friday--place was packed. NO reservations so you just have to wait your turn. If you're all 21+ more options because of the bar. (Which reminds me, drinks are good, too.) All in all, a nice choice for a simple, not-too-expensive dinner out.
