Top Notch Traditional Texas Barbeque

By kjlanc |

A top notch traditional Texas barbeque restaurant. The meat is tender and flavorful. There is a good selection of sides and all are delicious. Even the relish station is excellent. The service is always courteous and efficient. We have been to lots of barbeque restaurants and this is our favorite.

Tasty and tender

By mshbnyehud |

I'm new to Dallas and searching for the best BBQ in town that's also reasonably priced and just darn good! Back Country exceeds what I expected for a great lunch near NW Highway. I thoroughly enjoyed the tender, juicy and tasty sliced brisket along with an equally enjoyable sausage portion. I chose BBQ beans and green beans as sides and was not disappointed. Texas toast accompanies the dinner plates, and the only complaint is that it's a bit greasy. But soaked in BBQ sauce, and you're in heaven. Can't wait to go back and try some of the other offerings here.

Dinner with the boys/men

By O1628YTedwardh |

Well, sometimes you just have to ask questions. The gentleman that greeted me turned out to be the “pit master”. Mr. Ernest has been with them since 1975!! I ordered the 3 meat combo (with brisket, ribs and sausage.) I helped myself to the hot beans, bbq sauce, coleslaw. As an ex chef/restauranteur, I was absolutely amazed at how incredibly good EVERYTHING was. The price was amazingly reasonable. I’ve driven by that place all my life and never stopped in. Upon leaving, I grab Mr. Ernest and told him my experience and I think we both were tearing up. I will definitely use them for catering events as well as dining in. My old tag line in my restaurants was “food comes from our heart, I hope it touches yours!” The pic I am showing shows nothing left!!! Thank you Mt. Ernest and may God Always Bless You

very typical Texas bbq place

Good food and nice people ~ the usual bbq fare and typical setting, done well, in the heart of Dallas.

Lunch time

By HotelGuruGirl |

My friend recommended this place and I ordered a two meat combo plate with sliced beef, smoked turkey, baked potato casserole, greens and toast. Both meats were delicious and tender. Definitely wood smoked. Baked potato casserole was tasty. The greens were not that great so I took off a circle. I was amused that it's called Texas toast in Texas. All in all. Delicious! I'd for sure order from here again next time I'm in Dallas.

Great savory BBQ spices and sauce.

Known the owner and his associate for many decades!!! This is a MUST TRY adventure on your list!! Lots of flavor. Spicey sauces... your choice. They will give you a taste while there! Enjoy~

There is better bbq in Dallas but Back Country does a good job & makes you feel comfortable. I'll be back

Great Barbeque and Sides

By DrDanDMan |

We have been dining here at least once a month for 20 years. Excellent, lean brisket, great ribs, sausage and chicken. Sides are served cafeteria style and all are consistently good, two varieties of beans, whole corn on the cob, potato salad, cole slaw, green beans, etc. Order very good okra or french fries and it is served piping hot by the time you are seated. Large baked potato with all the fixings also excellent. Not much atmosphere and the staff can be friendly to indifferent, never rude. Very basic casual atmosphere, comfortable but not fancy. Would like to see a spicier barbecue sauce option but I mix the standard sauce with some house-brand pepper sauce they have in bottles and it is very good. We have not found a better barbecue restaurant in Dallas in terms of the quality of the meats and sides.

Dependably Good

By slocumdave |

Food is always top notch here. Had the chopped beef sandwich. Not pre-mixed, but chopped in front of you. Good, lean brisket. They have the best hot links - Smoky Denmarks. Sides were good, I had baked beans and mashed potatoes. They also have corn, corn casserole, baked potatoes, cheesy potatoes, green beans, cole slaw, and salad. Sweet tea very good. Staff is always very friendly. Ample free parking.

Hands down the best ribs

By VegasBelt |

Always a great treat for my staff..... never fail to make staff happy.... I order here for celebrations or for no occasion. Always excellent quality...

Good food great taste

By Patrick O |

Very good tasting Bar B Que. Made for a great lunch. The place looks small from the outside. But once inside there is plenty of room. I had the Beef Brisket which was cooked perfectly and there sause is good as well. French fries are always good.

Good BBQ!!

By aybanks |

I love the smokiness of this BBQ and the sauce is pretty good. The ribs are tender and very good. I also love their frozen tea, GET A LARGE!!!

Good BBQ for this side of Dallas

By Cruising2by2 |

We've stopped here twice in the past month while visiting family and this is the best BBQ on this side of Dallas. It's cafeteria style as you order your meat. Brisket has been very good, nice smoke ring and tender. Definitely like there pork ribs, they have a dry rub that has a nice, different taste. Pulled pork is also a winner. Service has always been good and friendly. We will be back when we come to visit family.

Been visiting here for almost 20 years--get the ribs (beef or pork)!

By Patricia A |

When my husband and I lived in Dallas, we used to stop in at least once a month to pick up ribs. Now each time we return to that part of the Metroplex, we make a special side trip. Back Country has always had amazing pork ribs, but they started carrying beef ribs not too long ago, and those are also worth the drive.

Love this place!

By Philip R |

This is the best tasting BBQ in Dallas! The sliced BBQ beef sandwich with fries is my favorite. Always great! Friendly service. Clean, family atmosphere. We have NEVER been disappointed.

Bone-in chicken is very smoky

By tmcgeemiami |

The best! Bone-in chicken is very smoky. The Beef Brisket BBQ is amazing. I ordered the Three Meat Combo with ribs, hot links, bbq chicken, potato salad, fried okra, and Texas toast. The sauce is a personal preference, but we enjoyed it, The service is always courteous and efficient.

Great country eats

By Brent H |

Second visit, but it's been three years. Food was as good as I remembered. Service was speedy and friendly, had the ribs and there were tasty and meaty. I will go back nest time I'm in the area. Thanks!

Good eats

By TexasEagle |

Contrary to some of the reviews, the BBQ combo we had was very good..........brisquet was lean and tender, although not too smoky. Ribs were tender and had good smoke. Sauce is personal preference, but we enjoyed it, just enough spice and sweetness. BBQ beans were good as was the creamed spinach (havent seen that at a BBQ joint). Got a good chuckle from my servers when I asked for cornbread. They said "bbq joints dont have cornbread".. I informed them that eating in bbq joints for over 40 years, cornbread does go with BBQ. Owner/management might want to rethink that. By the way, my wife and I owned/operated a BBQ restaurant and we served cornbread.

For BBQ, as good as it gets.

By Travelingmelinda |

I just stopped at Back Country because they have the best potato salad, and i was not disappointed, but I had forgotten how good their barbecue is. I had a pulled pork sandwich with sauce on the side. The bun was soft but held up to the sauce and was toasted with crispy little edges. The meat was delicious and not fatty. Included a full condiment bar. I shall come again sooner next time.

Great ribs

By Terry H |

Very good BBQ. this is a great place, the ribs were fall off the bone tender. The brisket was tender and had good flavor. I thought it was a little dry. But put some of those good sauce on it and you have a winner. Beans were good also. I would enjoy visiting this place again.

A LOT better than Dickeys

By GorRey |

On a scale from 1-10 this is hands down a 40. Some of the best BBQ in Dallas. Worth the drive to have some. Good environment and good people

Good service but cold dinner

By Shefali P |

4 of us ordered. 2 combo meats. The turkey was awful - almost uncooked like. The hot links were cold. The only thing decent on meats was brisket. Vegetables were excellent. Made to order okra and onion rings. Enjoyed the creamed spinach. The corn was average. Overall I would not return if I had another choice of good Texas bbq

Meh, I've Had Better

By Jared K |

The name "Back Country" fits this place perfectly. I ordered the Three Meat Combo with ribs, hot links, bbq chicken, potato salad, fried okra, and Texas toast. My fried okra came straight out of the fryer, and had a nice crispy batter to it. You can imagine my disappointment when I bit in and realized that the okra was pretty much devoid of any flavor whatsoever. The potato salad had a great mustard flavor. Oddly, the potatoes were very finely diced, so the consistency was much more like egg salad. When I first looked at my combo plate, I was a little upset that it only came with two small ribs. Although, after I started eating them, I decided that they had probably given me two too many. The bbq chicken was cooked perfectly. My favorite meat of the trio was definitely the hot links. They had a nice char on the outside, so there was a good snap to the casing. Read my full review, complete with pictures: Google search "The Barbecue Fiend"

Best to keep going and try somewhere else

By Randy Thompson |

I hate giving bad reviews, because this seemed like a fine group of people running the place, putting the plates together, etc, but Back Country just doesn't cut it. The place felt dirty, or maybe grimy is a better word; like it hadn't been cleaned in a long, long time. The walk up stations did not look fresh, and the food was largely tasteless. There are just too many good BBQ places around to spend your hard earned money where it won't buy the best . . . or even close to it.

One of the top two barbecue restaurants that we have eaten in Dallas

By Jim S |

It was great. My wife and I had the chopped barbecue brisket sandwich which was fantastic, no fat, some chopped burnt ends which made it a little crispy and crunchy, which we like. The onion rings were to die for, and the baked beans were great. Service line people were very helpful and nice.

Very good BBQ since 1975

By StorminNorman50 |

Visited again recently for lunch after several years. Was near the restaurant and went back for lunch and not much has changed. Very good BBQ, quick service, really good people working there as usual. Generous portions, great taste, variety of vegetables. Clean dining room area.

Holy Smokes it's good!

By Sh R |

The Beef Brisket BBQ is amazing. The staff is friendly. Among the best BBQ I have ever had. It is located near the Geo. Bush Library and SMU.

Best bbq so far

By Salina S |

The receptionist at our hotel recommended this place to us and I have to say this is the best place we've found so far on our Texas road trip. They are so friendly here and the food is really good. I couldn't decide what I wanted so they helped with my decision by letting me taste a few things. All of it was yummy.

Serving great BBQ for more than 40 years!

By Ken J |

It is all about the brisket, which is always well trimmed and lean! This is not some "trendy" BBQ restaurant but a family owned and operated restaurant that has been cooking great brisket and ribs for more than 40 years. I've used Back Country for catering and cooking holiday turkeys for years and never been dissappointed. This is a great neighborhood restaurant with a loyal local following. Admittedly I eat just about the same thing everytime (chopped beef, slaw or potatoe salad) and I have been eating there as long as the owner has been in business.

Add Back Country to your bar-b-q favorites

By Kathy L |

Of course there are lots of great bar-b-q places in Texas in general and lots in the Dallas area, specifically. This was a new one for us (visiting for a reunion planned there). We'll go back in future visits to the area. Brisket and ribs were outstanding (I've had better sausage but this was good). The sides shone: I had the hot beans (perfect blends of spices and heat) and the spinach casserole (spinach, cream, sour cream, cheese, etc) j-- oh, yeah!

Best BBQ in Dallas

By Catherine |

We have done an exhaustive search of BBQ in Texas, this is the best. The brisket is cooked to perfection and the sauce is the perfect balance of tangy and sweet, will seasoned and not goopy. The backed potato topped with brisket is yummy and the okra fried to perfection. The potato salad is unique and best I have ever had.

Best ribs in america

By kevin b |

Ernest has the secret to the best ribs in the country. The meat just falls off the bone. If you are anywhere near Dallas and love ribs, you have to go here.

Very decent

By Erin483 |

Was at a nearby hospital visiting family on the weekend and the cafeteria was closed. We decided to try a close-by, non-chain restaurant. Usually you can never go wrong with BBQ. We got the chopped beef sandwich, potato salad, and peach cobbler (they were out of banana pudding.) The sandwiches were good size and had plenty of meat. Not much flavor but definitely good. The sauce was different, had a distinct honey taste or something. Not sure but it was good too. The potato salad I would pass on. It was more like egg salad with a little potato. LOTS of finely chopped egg, it made for a very weird texture. The peach cobbler was good, couldn't tell the crust from the filling but had a good flavor. If you're in the area just looking for a place to eat, would be worth the stop. If you're looking for the best BBQ around, I'd keep going. Was a little pricey for 2, $19 and change. We didn't even get drinks. The guys working were friendly and service was good.

Great Food + Bland Decor = Average

By Jane S |

Their ribs are great, so is the fried okra and the baked potatoes. Nothing wrong at all with the food - but I always get it to go. Wooden booths, formica tables - your usual bbq decor I guess. It's a little cleaner than some of it's sister BBQ joints, but I'd probably be willing to trade the cleanliness for a little more ambiance. Looks like what it mainly needs is a woman's touch.

Family loved the food. Staff super nice, friendly. Service quick. Will return.

By ELK_2019 |

My family stopped here while passing through, and we all felt it was the best BBQ we have had in Dallas. The dishes and sides were all excellent. Servings were generous. Price was great. My younger son said the creamed corn and banana pudding were the "best I have ever had" and asked to return the next day. The staff were also especially friendly, and the food arrived quickly at the table. The location is a bit unexpected for a place this good - modest sign, not a large parking lot - but I would definitely call it a "hidden gem." We will be returning.

To much spice, far too greasy

By OldArmySoldier |

The meat was just too hot or spicey. The french fries were cooked in old grease. It was a waste of money and time. Won't try them again.

Old school BBQ - yummy!

By Kathleen M |

Good basic eats old school style. There is nothing fancy about this place, but don't let that put you off. Come on in and enjoy a great home- cooking style experience. Line up cafteria style, grab your tray, pick your meats, your sides, pay and sit yoursef down. The staff were plentiful, friendly, and helpful. We really enjoyed the whole experience.

A place serve good food and banjo music

By tigr |

The Dallas banjo band plays monthly in this restaurant, and the schedule can be obtained from the website of dallasbanjoband.com. The BBQ also tastes great.

Always excellent

By slocumdave |

Super friendly staff, great barbecue. Hot links are Smoky Denmark - the best! Bone-in chicken is very smoky. Plenty of vegetables and desserts are great. Prices are typical for cafeteria-style bbq.

Best BBQ in town

By Catherine |

I have conducted a thorough review of BBQ brisket in Dallas, this is the best. The meat is cooked perfectly and the sauce is hands down the best on the planet. If you want sticky, sweet sauce - you won't like it. The potato salad is unique and tangy, the fried okra is crispy goodness. Why anyone wastes time at Pecan Lodge, I don't know. Back Country is real deal Texas BBQ, it isn't fancy - it's how it should be. Oh, the guys that work there are friendly and nice too.
