The Good, The Bad and The Ugly of our first visit to Backwoods Brewing!

By Jgmills |

The Good: The selection of beers was very satisfying for this IPA-loving, sour-loving beer girl! The atmosphere was fun, and the selection of t-shirts was fun too. The Bad: For my pilsner-loving husband, the selection was less satisfying for him. I would have preferred to get a 4-pour flight instead of a 6-pour. The Ugly: Not a thing! It was great!

Food is fine, service excellent

By Leslie J |

Was a little smaller than expected, Food and drink were good, but nothing amazing. Food combos were unusual. Service was excellent. Food arrived quickly. You pay at your table.

Nice Brew Pub with Good Beer choices, friendly Staff

By TIM B |

Stopped into this location while on recent Portland trip. The bartender was nice and we had the beer sampler with six self choices of their tap options. We did not eat any food, but others were and it looked good. The place seemed to have a more relaxed vibe and was cheaper than the nearby Deschutes Brew Pub that we visited first. Would like to go back to try food here.

Hit The Spot

By Kerry J |

After roaming the aisles at Powell’s Bookstore we needed a place to sit and refresh. The beer was great, Trailhazer was our favorite. Really good burgers, sweet potato fries, club sandwich, and tots. Friendly service and we were with friends and stayed awhile and they didn’t rush us. Very relaxing.

Great brew and burger

By RichardN28 |

We ate here as a family of four and each enjoyed the large juicy burgers we'd ordered. The food was excellent and the bar / restaurant had a great atmosphere. The craft beers were excellent too

Great local brew pub. Good drinks and excellent food. Friendly servers

By Cengiz G |

Excellent local brewery that serves good pub food. Ordered the El Cubana and a flight of beers and ciders on one night and the Pastrami sandwich the other. The flights were good and the sandwiches come with crispy tater tots (crunchy and flavour-ful). Great service (food came very quickly) and servers are very friendly.

Amazing Food, Great Beer

By codyhansen360 |

Awesome Lunch menu! Great Prices! Food portions were large and the flavours were great! Beer prices were cheap and the staff was amazing. Large selection of Swag as well! We will return here for sure!

Tater tots!

By Surfsandsunnfun |

Stepped in here for an appetizer and beer after a couple of hours exploring the pearl district.( Aside - don't miss checking out the Powell bookstore, claimed to be the largest new and used bookstore in the world). Wasn't hungry but wanted something greasy with my beer so ordered the tater tots. What can be said about tater tots that hasn't already been said? It was the sauces that made those nobby little suckers so yummy. Dipped them in garlic with aioli sauce so tasty. Also had some super spicy habanero sauce too. Not for girly men-had a serious kick. Chased them down with the trail haze ipa, my new favorite beer. Big fun bar. Will probably never return cuz we're just visiting and there are SO MANY fun looking eateries and drinkeries in this sweet town.

Wide selection of craft beer and tasty gastro-pub food

By TravelMamaBear |

Deshutes and 10 Barrels were way too busy! Didn't feel like Rogue, again. So, we decided to try Backwoods. Wow! Their Brewmaster(s) have produced a wide-range of beers; I don't like "hoppy" and found 6 unique, low IBU brews for my tasting flight...while my husband had 6 ales and porters in his flight. Our daughter enjoyed a fresh brewed iced tea. The Brisket sandwich was insanely delicious, pulled pork tater-tots were a hit with my daughter, and my husband raved about the Pa 'Dale sandwich. The staff were very attentive and the food was served quickly after ordering.

Great Stop for Beer

By BRDman7 |

While in Portland we stopped in to sample some of the local beers and enjoyed our visit at backwoods. Good beer and service in a downtown location.

Backwoods #1 in Pearl District

By BilGriz |

Backwoods is awesome We are from Montana and luckily found “The Backwoods “ Full bar: awesome beer; and the food is 10 (way beyond bar food) Nice atmosphere and great staff We will be back!

Look forward to going back

By Tim Eaton |

We were running a little late and wanted a bite before a show we were seeing at the Armory. Everything in the area was busy so went here and got seated right away for starters. Had the Trailhazer IPA and it was a tasty beer. Had the small chef salad to eat. The small was quite big and their twist on it was interesting and made for an incredibly tasty salad. Look forward to going back for some of their other offerings. Server was nice!!!

Poor service ruined an otherwise good meal

By hammerhd44 |

My daughter loved her burger and was shocked at how large it was and I was happy to find a brewery offering flights again, although I didn't particularly enjoy their beer. We were both shocked at how unfriendly our waitress was. She wasn't friendly and when I asked for a copy of our check so I could review it, she seemed to be very irritated with me. I can't think of this ever happening to me at any other restaurant so I don't get why she had the bad attitude with me about this. I almost always tip 20% but not this time.

Great Food-Fun Place

By Tricia L |

New to Portland -Pearl Dist. Great brewery, my husband enjoyed the beers. Food was great, had the hummus plate and garlic tots. Enjoyed the variety on the menu healthy options to choose from. Not just good beer,Bloody Mary's were good too! Fun atmosphere. Great service!

Great Food

By PollyannaDreamgirl |

This restaurant was recommended to us by the Hampton Inn, where we were staying. It was an easy walk from the Hampton Inn on 9th Avenue. We enjoyed their burgers and salads - delicious!

Good selection of craft beers

By Neil_Ferreira |

Had some beers and a bite to eat here over the Labour Day weekend. Good selection of craft beers holding true to Portland's reputation for outstanding craft beers. The pulled pork nachos were delicious.

After dinner drinks

By Linn H |

Stopped by after making a visit to nearby Deschutes Brewing Co. Backwoods was friendlier and more personable on beers than Deschutes. Enjoyed the atmosphere and personalization. Lots of great beers to try. Ridiculous variety. Flights are pick- your-own.

Beer and good food

By rologo |

We went for beer and grabbed a sandwich. It was delicious! The service was excellent. Steven was very friendly, knowledgeable, and we had a great chat. If your not into beer, try the Pinot Noir. We felt very welcomed there talking to a "local". A great experience. The pilsner was terrific!

Great Brewing Company in the Pearl

By bitler |

We hadn't been to Portland for over a year and so we were pleased to find this spot. We used to live in the Pearl part time and this place was new to us. We had a great mid afternoon lunch. The food, brews and service were all great. Cheery place with friendly folks. It seemed like a lot of locals were there when we were. They have an early happy hour if I recall correctly. Give it a try!

Brews & Tots

By TheJimmyco |

Nice patio service and beers. We ordered way tooo much food, tots, smoked salmon nachos, Buffalo chicken wrap... all was very good.

Great food, excellent service, nice sidewalk seating

By TrvlTheWorld2 |

We've eaten at the location in Carson many times and this one trumps that location in all aspects. Food selection, seating, customer service. They delivered it all! We were looking for a place with outside seating and stumbled upon Backwoods. They have a very large, diverse menu. My husband ordered the 1/2 salad and it was plenty big. I ordered a burger and ended up only eating 1/2 of it because it was huge. The meat was good quality and cooked perfectly. Good beer selection and great service. We will definitely go back.

Good Burgers & Beer and Salads also...good staff

By wiensch77 |

5 of us had dinner here recently never having been here before, but it was recommended to us by someone we knew. It was a good experience, reasonably priced with good food, salads and better beer. Definately try one of the IPAs when you visit. We shared the Pretzel (2) which washed down with the beer very nicely. Worth a visit.

Nice spot for a drink

By Brendon P |

Stopped by to taste the local brew. Beer flight had 6 different samples. Only $13 so good value. Friendly and knowledgeable staff.

Their flights have 10 beers!!

By Djlittl73 |

Stopped for beer tasting and lunch. We were originally seated at a long table with another couple but when some friends of their arrived the waitress graciously let us move to another table with more space. Got the flight which included a 4oz pour of each of their beers - loved being able to try everything even though some weren't my style there were all good. Also grabbed some lunch while we were there. Really nice place, great vibe, and I'd definitely go back.

The salads are great

By Melanie T |

Ordered delivery to our hotel at almost 9 pm when our original order at a different restaurant said it was delivered, but it really wasn't. Appreciate that they were able to accept our order so late. First off, I want to say that I almost never order salads because 1. If I'm traveling, I would want to try whatever food that that city is popular for 2. If I'm at home, I feel like I could just make the salad myself. But the salads at Backwoods are next level. They are combos that you wouldn't really think of (though now I may try to steal their recipes). And you probably wouldn't even think to order a salad at a brewery! You would normally order a burger and fries, or some pub food - but don't sleep on the salads, people! We ordered the NW Fiesta Salad (mixed greens, tortilla strips, black bean and corn salsa, red onions, pico, cheese and avocado, jalapeño lime ranch) and Trail Grazer Salad (Italian kale, organic quinoa, tomatoes, cucumbers, banana peppers and house made candy walnuts, citrus vinaigrette and garnished with cotija cheese and balsamic reduction). Both salads were great, but we ordered the entree version (I guess because we were trying to be ambitious and eat our greens on this trip) so unfortunately, we couldn't finish it all - which by the way, the entree sizes are HUGE! So if you are two, or maybe even three people, you could share one as a starter. We also ordered the Cuban Sandwich (pulled pork, pastrami, Swiss cheese and pickles with mayonaise and mustard on Bianco bread) because we thought we needed carbs - again, I didn't realize how large those salads actually were. This was an interesting take on the cuban but I didn't care for it. It tasted mostly like pastrami, and the bread was floppy, but I don't know if that is a take out issue or if that's just how their bread is. It does come with tater tots though (and lots of ‘em) so at least there’s that. Wish I got to try their beer, if it's as good as their salads!

Go for the beer, not the food

By Me C |

Positives: friendly service; a full bar for non-beer drinkers; offered a flight of beers for those who want to taste beers; backwood salad was tasteless and wilted like it was left over from the night before. Pretzel was large but accompanying cheese dip was overseasoned with horseradish. .

Dinner before show

By UaFlaitbeartais |

We had dinner at Backwoods Brewery downtown. We had the amber beer, which we enjoyed since we like low IBU beer. We had the Fiesta salad with chicken and the small one was plenty big. It was very good. We also had the pulled pork sandwich with a side salad. Both were very good. Friendly wait staff.

Lively Pub

By Patrick Y |

Ate dinner here while on a business trip. The bar staff was very friendly and the service was good. The Backwood brews were good and the Oktoberfest burger was pretty awesome! Good place to post up at the bar, have a beer and watch a game.

Good range of beers and decent food.

By nodrama1 |

I had the "flight of beers" giving me 6 small beers to choose from. A good way to do beer tasting. The staff were friendly. Fun / loud atmosphere. I had the pulled pork burger which was pretty good.

Great intro to brewpubs!

By Arlene Z |

Coming from Florida, the entire brewpub experience was new for us. This was just great! Nice vibe and atmosphere, great service. We had a beer flight of 6 that was terrific. Also some terrific food - reuben sandwich with tater tots (I hear tots are pretty standard fare in brew pubs?) and a Mexican salad. Everything very fresh, friendly and reasonably priced. I wish we lived closer!

Great food and service!

By bjminparis |

Local restaurant, I’d say elevated bar food. Looked like a lot of burger choices which my husband got, I had a grilled chicken sandwich with tomatoes, avocado and more which was delicious. You could add a salad and the salads were good portions and really good. They also have tater tots and sweet potato fries. Lots of beer selections. Service was great.

Great Beers - Disappointed that an Oregon Brewpub did not pour imperial pints

By NWOregonTraveler |

Loved their beers and was not disappointed. They opened only a month ago in the Pearl and their new NW Portland venue is really nice. I've read reviews on other sites and the opening pains that other visitor experienced were long gone. Service, food and staff were great. I was disappointed that as a NW brewpub they didn't pour imperial pints. Deschutes, Breakside, 10 Barrel and most if not all brewpubs pour 20 oz. imperial pints in BrewVanna of Portland. I hope this oversight will soon be corrected.

Good Beer, good food and good service

By SeattleKarl |

This brewery located in Portland’s Pearl District has great beer and good food. We had a S’mores Golden Stout and a Ridge Run Stout. We both liked the Ridge Run Stout, but one of us who is a traditional stout drinker, didn’t like the S’mores Golden Stout because it was finished with chocolate, marshmallows and vanilla giving a sweet flavor. For lunch we had a Chicken Caesar wrap and a Philly Steak sandwich, both were very good. Our server was friendly and attentive. We would definitely go back.

Lovers weekend

By tlynnsevern |

C Decided to come across the street from Deschutes just to give it a try. OMG, best hot cocktail I've had in awhile. Beats the hot toddy I had. Extremely friendly staff. Made sure we were taken care of

Tasty burgers & great craft beer

By Jess C |

We visited for lunch and ordered a beef burger which was absolutely delicious, my Caesar salad was really unique with cranberries and candied walnuts- yum!!!! And my partner was a huge fan of the beer. A highlight of our trip to Portland!

Good food and service

By Yankee33 |

To be honest, I was not feeling well when I came here so I can only say my chicken sandwich was ok. I tried 2 of their house beers and did not like them. There were no options since they don't sell any domestic beers. My wife had the chicken tortilla soup with tortilla chips and enjoyed them. Service was good.

Worth a second chance

By Kristi W |

Ordered food delivery to hotel. The venue didn't provide napkins or cutlery. The patty melt was not cooked and lacked flavor. I'm told the bbq pork sandwich and mac-n-cheese were really good.

Easy dining

By Laurabob52 |

We had lunch with of course beer. Menu selection was excellent lots of choices. My wife and I shared a pastrami sandwich and salad both were delicious. Beer selection is extensive and priced reasonable. Waitress was excellent. Good place to watch sports has a large bar.

only place open and worth the wait

By familytraveler812 |

We arrived in historic heat - this was the only place we could find still open. It was worth the small wait to be seated. Staff was very helpful and friendly. Food was good - beer was great. Able to do a quick taste test before getting a full glass. Thankful for the staff being around and the business staying open in such weather.

Unique Beer

By William V |

Got lucky. We were just walking around and saw this place. Great service with good food. We went back two more times.

Great Spot in Downtown Hillsboro!

By California K |

GREAT spot in downtown Hillsboro. My wife and I are not beer drinkers, but they seemed to have an excellent selection. Food was very good and service was excellent. Great place to chill and watch a football game. We'll be back.

Lunch with a friend

By Delores T |

I had a club sandwich served with tater tots. Sandwich was very good but greasy. The butter on Texas toast and oil from cheese made for greasiness. There was a choice of sweet potato fries or tater tots. My friend had a burger. It was huge and had everything imaginable on it. Service was fast and waitresses were attentive. Restaurant and restrooms were clean and well laid out.

Friendly

By Mark F |

Great range of beers and a friendly laidback team on site too. Way better than across the road, where I couldn’t get served and walked out thirsty after 10 minutes. Good range of pub food on the menu and big portions too. Nice outdoor seating as well.

Love backwoods!!

By spurtee1978 |

Delicious food, great service and good beer! The ribs with blue cheese mash potato’s and veggies was delicious!

Awesome Brewery!!

By KC_Traveler--66062 |

Stopped in around noon after a morning of exploring the Portland downtown and Pearl District. This place was great. I had the Little Town Burger and the house Pilsner (ok, two of them)....fantastic!! This was a great midday break. The bar staff were friendly and attentive. The patrons at the bar were equally interactive. I would absolutely recommend this brewery to anyone visiting this area. Cheers!

Great beer, food and service

By Queenjjd |

Prior to going to this location, I’d had Pecan Pie Backwoods Beer, which was recommended by my daughter. I was excited to get to the actual pub/restaurant. It was really busy but they were able to seat us quickly and the server was at our table immediately. She was very friendly. Our order was taken quickly and our food came out hot and fast. The food and beer were excellent. The server checked on us and made sure we had water. My daughter had the brisket sandwich. I had the pulled pork. My daughter’s friend had a burger. All were wonderful. I can’t wait to go back and order the brisket! We also had sweet potato fries which were well seasoned.

Great food and beer!

By Tanzy123 |

The food and beer was very good. The server was efficient and friendly. Food arrived quickly- I recommend this restaurant!

Good beer decent food

By hawntjam |

A pub I haven’t tried. I had a few beers there and sandwich on one time and a pretzel the next. They have free WiFi so it makes working and having a few an easy thing to do. The Ruben I had was well made, not too over grilled the bread was hard as many do. The tots were great.... I love tots. The pretzel was typical for a pub nothing bad or outstanding good filler when having beers. The beers are pretty solid, they could use a bit more hops, it is the PNW for Christ sake. I visited twice on this trip so that says I would go again.

very creatively done nachos

By benthere |

'Backwoods'? Anything but. Located right in downtown Portland near Powell's Books, it's an enjoyable place to stop with friends for lunch on a busy day. Great service: attentive, friendly server who saw to our every need. I must comment about the nachos I ordered to be a meal in itself, rather than just as an appetizer, since I was not that hungry. Well, it truly is a meal in itself, piled high, with easily enough to feed 2 people. At least 4 different cheeses applied and creatively done. So from this I conclude it has great bar food.

Two small slices of bread is NOT a fresh baked baguette

By KarenAzinger |

I got a glowing recommendation from a local for this brew pub, so we were excited to eat here, but the food fell far short of expectations. The pizza was only okay, the brisket was dry and when I ordered a 'fresh baked baguette' as a side I got 2 very small slices of bread. Two small slices of bread for $1 a slice is NOT a fresh baked baguette! Very disappointing. Not good value for the money.

Great Lunch

By Kelly |

This is a great lunch spot in the Pearl District. They have a large menu with salads, sandwiches, burgers, and beer. They have options for kids too! Service was great.

Was here 3 times in 3 days

By FromAway67 |

On a business trip, we stopped here 3 times in 3 days. The beers are very creative and the two IPAs were very good. The food is typical bar food, but the pork nachos were very good. The bartenders were very friendly. My only complaint is they close too early.

Hidden Gem

By AW487 |

After a long day of travel and hiking we were looking for a satisfying dinner when we stumbled upon Backwoods Brewing. The service was great, just like their beer selection and fun pizza options. We sat outside so it was a tad chilly with the breezes coming in - bring a coat.

Fun Place!

By jautrey21 |

On vacation in Portland and was looking for a place to have a couple of beers before dinner and came here. Nice selection of beers and friendly bartenders who were very helpful to us in making selections. The Pecan Pie Porter was especially good!

Goodm Beer Selection

By Mikpar |

This brewpub had a very good beer selection. Service was fairly fast and the pints were $6.00 each. It is close to The Armory for plays, if you are going to one.

Better than others nearby

By Shelbie D |

We stopped in on rainy Black Friday. Boy, are we glad we did. The staff is super friendly, the beer is a must and the food...amazing. Warm, delish and perfect. The atmosphere is exactly what we were looking for. We had stopped at a nearby brewery, but after looking at “new” menu, we are glad we bailed and had lunch at Backwoods

finger foods and beers

By Vincent84110 |

we were there on thursday 4pm. We had some beers , and finger foods. good choices of beers, especially the ones from the local breweries. service is good, food is ok, nice place to go in Pearl district

Great Beer

By RLD808 |

I'll be honest, we only went here because the first place we were going to was way to packed and didn't want to wait or be around a crowd, but we are very glad we ended up here. The crowd was a mix of 20's somethings on up to seniors. It was busy, yet not crazy packed or noisy with loud patrons. Just people having a normal afternoon of drinks, food, and casual conversation. Very relaxed overall vibe and pleasant all around. Both the host and server were pleasant and professional. No wait at all to be seated and our server followed almost immediately after we were seated. All seating was about the same and positioned nicely throughout the place. The big windows gave lots of natural lighting and a view to watch the street activity. They offered beer flights in quantities of 6 which made if fun and a great opportunity to try different types that you wouldn't ordinarily think of ordering or braving to try. You simply wrote what you wanted on a numbered paper and then they brought you the flight in the order of what you wrote so that you can remember what you like or didn't. Food offering was mostly typical bar foods, but we chose the smoked salmon spread just to have a bit to munch on and didn't want anything heavy or greasy. It was huge. There was enough for 4 people easily to dig into. I was very happy we ordered it as it gave some heathy options and nothing to weigh us down to much before dinner time as were there for afternoon drinks. We liked this place very much and will be back next time we visit Portland. It is recommendation in my book if you are looking for a brewery experience. Cheers!

Fun vibe, very good beer

By roadtrip_ken_2017 |

I stopped in for an afternoon beer while visiting Portland's Pearl District, and sat at the bar. It was a pleasant brewpub atmosphere in an airy open interior, with sports on several TVs. They had about 10 beers on tap, and although I might have liked to try the sampler flight of six of them, that was a bit more than I wanted to have at that time so I opted for a pint of their Hazy Nelson IPA. I really enjoyed it and bought a couple of cans to take home with me. Although I just stopped in for a beer and not a meal, I enjoyed the experience and I'd certainly consider going back the next time I'm in the area.

Great brew and atmosphere

By Marshal M |

Caitlin is the sweetest and kindest bartender. She makes this place. We loved the River Pig and Into the backwoods.

Fantastic Place!

By Brian F |

We walked by and quickly walked back. The atmosphere looked great from the outside, so we went in. Seated by the Bar and we where not mistaken. Great Service, Beer and try the Brisket and wings. Pretty packed on this Saturday for Lunch. Free guest WiFi. Will be back if in the area.
