A sushi bar without hamachi?

By Catherine |

Not what we expected but served our needs on a rainy night. Think their customers eat more rolls than sashimi or Negri. Sat at sushi bar but had to ask twice for my maguro order and hand roll. The house cured saba was wonderful and quality of seafood great. Best bite was the shishito peppers.

Portland Sushi

By rrichardfamily |

Our Pedal Tour Guide Iraq suggested we try Bamboo. Wasn't sure how Portland did sushi but it was absolutely delicious. Being vegan I chose the Green Machine, the sauce was to die for. Also had the miso soup with mushrooms, excellent. Highly recommend

Well worth it!

Great food, excellent service, comfortable atmosphere. The wait can be long, but it's definitely worth it.

East Meets East

By ZenDark30 |

I'm continually amazed to see one restaurant close and another open in the same spot and not understood why one succeeds and the other went under. That's what happened to Bamboo Sushi. We used to go to what will remain an unnamed sushi place that is now Bamboo Sushi. It sits next door to Ken's Artisan Pizza which typically has a line tumbling out the door. Now customers waiting for pizza stand next to people waiting for poke and share the same restrooms. If you're craving sushi, expect a wait but know everyone is Portland friendly. On nice days, you could sit in one of the colorful outdoor tables or inside where it's a bit dark and noisy. Since we were pushed for time, we took the first open table which was inside. There are two menus; one for designer drinks including Sapporo on tap and the other menu for traditional sushi rolls, sashimi, and other dishes for non raw fish eaters. We opted for the chefs special priced at $55. and included tuna, salmon, shrimp, mackerel, and more. It was a delicious as it was presented. Whether you live on the east or west side of Portland, everyone knows that the east side has been inundated with a plethora of restaurants in recent years. For Bamboo Sushi east meets east and it's a blissful exchange!

Good service. Decent Menu

By Ann M |

The food was good, the service was quick. Many of the choices were unusual which is refreshing. I wouldn't say that it was any better than the other good sushi restaurants that I have been to.

Delicious!

By aliishappy |

Place is super packed on Friday 6pm, hardly found a place to park but after eating here obvious why, delicious! Even good gluten free and non fish options.

Eh

By JQTAI |

Portions are sort of small and if you'd had a lot of sushi, it really isn't that special. Almost fusion sushi, not sure but it didn't impress so we left after trying some small plates.

Sustainable, delectable, possible.

Great find thanks to TA. Amazing food, service, atmosphere and Bamboo Sushi uses 100% renewable energy. Get a bottle of Demon Slayer saki and order the albacore carpaccio. We dined at the SE location and really liked the neighborhood. Uber from PDX.

Wonderful sushi restaurant in SE Portland

By JanW |

What a wonderful find! While driving through our old neighborhood, we discovered this fantastic sushi restaurant. Our server, Nura, was excellent and helped us to choose sake, as well as sushi that included old favorites as well as new tastes. We look forward to returning soon. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Bamboo Sushi is a Wonderful Dining Experience

By envaughn |

From the time I got there to the time I left, dining at Bamboo Sushi was a wonderful experience. The hostesses her kind and welcoming, the server was very knowledgeable about the food and Sake. Their menu accommodates gluten-free diets. I loved their gluten-free tempura and White Crane Sake. I sat at the sushi bar, where sushi was being prepared by the chefs outside the kitchen. These guys are masters of their art. The food was beautiful and every bite delicious. They choose the finest products and utilize environmentally safe methods for manufacture. They have do wonderful work, on so many different levels and dimensions. Thank you again!

Fresh and Professional...

By 954duncanw |

We went on a Saturday night without a reservation. We were told we would have to wait 25 minutes, but only had to wait for about 10 minutes before getting a seat at the sushi bar. We weren't sure at first about sitting there but it was actually a great spot to sit as you could watch the hustle and bustle of a well disciplined team under Yoshi's supervision. The team worked quietly and diligently and were attentive and friendly. We got quite a few dishes between us. Really enjoyed the sashimi sampler, and okonomiyaki were agreed standouts. I have to say they got the balance just right. Highly recommended. Best Japanese meal we've had in years.

Delicious Chirashi

By MauricioBabilonia |

I had a great dinner at this restaurant. I sat at the bar, since I did not have a reservation. The bartender was very nice and took my order. I had the Chirashi which was delicious. I also had Ikura nigiri, also awesome. I would easily come back for a meal with my family.

Nice sushi and attentive servers!

By Enhan |

I had lunch today at Bamboo Sushi; could not remember the exact address of the branch I went to. The lunch set I ordered was fresh, delicious, filling and felt healthy. It is a pity that the people seating next to me was talking and laughing loudly. Well, that is life! I could choose my food, but could not decide whom to sit with.

Primarily sushi that's excellent and different

By haroldlflescher |

I rarely eat sushi where the menu is not "more of the same". Very fresh fish. There were some "cured" offerings which brought more variety than most places and were excellent. Many sushi restaurants serve pieces too large to pop into your mouth without taking a bite first, but these are the perfect size. The non-sushi menu was small but interesting. To start, at the sushi bar, before ordering you are given a small box of edamame and a plate with ginger and oshinko. I was happy to find this place.

Great Fresh Sushi

By travelinmen |

My wife and daughter, who have been to japan many times, love the sushi at Bamboo. Sitting at the sushi bar is the best and it is cool to watch the chef's work. They also have other item's on the menu for non sushi persons. Me. I have been to Japan 24 times in the past 10 years and no more sushi for me. I like the tempura vegiies and the have a yakitori type steak, which is so good. It is a little expensive but has quality sushi.

Good Food, Bad Service

By rcurtis948 |

I've been to both locations...Northwest Portland and Southeast Portland. The food is wonderful. The service leaves much to be desired. They have a bit of a haughty attitude. I mostly felt like I was tolerated. Oh well. There's lots more sushi in the city.

We had yakumi style sushi.

By jonny m |

I had not heard of yakumi style. I will not forget it either. I shall return. A total delight. Rating a sushi restaurant is tough. So not to embellish too much. Come here and eat. I can't see you not being totally pleased with your choice. yum. if you can't decide - Green Machine with Albacore while you wait for a vision.

Simply Amazing

By lesatho |

We didn't make reservations and just added to the wait-list one super busy evening. The wait was about double what we expected but SO worth it. The interior is gorgeous and the staff are so friendly and attentive. I did a full circle roll and my husband did the chef's choice sashimi and we were both blown away. Even before dinner started, having all the neat info available on the website about where their stock comes from and the effort they put into staying sustainable was very neat. I know I won't be able to hit up my favorite sushi place at home for a while because it's just not going to measure up for taste at all haha.

TOTAL NOISE FACTORY

By baywanderer |

The sushi was quite good. The service was mediocre. Big problem is that this place is super loud. If you are looking for a sedate sushi experience, eating here will be deeply disappointing.

More Fish...

By YinzGuy |

The Southeast location is small and there aren't many tables. The cocktail bar and sushi bar do take up quite a bit of space, but the décor is nice. The complimentary edamame beans (steamed/salted) were a real surprise. Forget the Vegetable Yakisoba dish at $13, it had very few vegetables and the noodles were like Top Ramen. The Grilled Shishito Peppers were tasty. We struggled to find enough of the Signature Rolls having fish in them and finally chose the California Sunset, Northwest Philly, and Lucky 13. The presentation for the first two was great, but the Lucky 13 looked as though it was hastily thrown together. They were all delicious. The wait staff was very good and kept our water glasses filled. We wouldn't hesitate to eat at Bamboo Sushi again, and the next time we plan on exploring their nigiri and sashimi plates.

Great sushi and atmosphere

By sainere |

Bamboo Sushi is a great restaurant with quality food and a great atmosphere. They offer many unique items on the menu, both food and drinks. We did not have a reservation because they do not allow reservations for just two people, but we only had to wait about 15 minutes. They then seated us at the bar, which was perfectly adequate. I was told they are quite pricey, but I will pay just about anything for a good sushi roll. I spent $26 for two rolls.

Excellent as usual

By LizaFly1266 |

This sushi place has quickly become our favorite for a couple different reasons. First and foremost, the flavors and freshness here are amazing. Fresh fish is brought in from all over the pacific and is different each time we visit. Their okonomiyaki (Japanese pancake) was the first thing with eel that I tried and made me an eel crazy sushi lover. The flavors are just ridiculous. Additionally, the ambiance is that of a good sushi bar in Japan with a sushi bar in the back and pillowed bench tables in the front. The place is cozy but not large and is packed each time we go. The servers are quite knowledgable and friendly. The place is expensive though but well worth it.

Best of sushi

By RatingDuo |

They have some very creative combinations. Plus the quality of the fish is one of the best I've tasted. It gets close to Tokyo quality. Must visit although slightly steep prices.

Sushi - Freshness in Portland

By TexasOne H |

Several 'locals' recommended Bamboo Sushi. We were not disappointed. The food was fresh and the service was outstanding. They also have a couple of interesting items worth trying.

Food was good, service was hilariously pretentious

By Matt C |

Bamboo Sushi touts a sustainable and ethically sourced menu of seafood and sides. All of the food is plated very well, serving sizes leave a little to be desired and the service is exactly what you would expect. The bartender (we sat at the bar) took our order and delivered our food, describing each piece of fish we were about to eat. We devoured our plates and put in a second order. We ordered raw quail egg shooters (along with an assortment of other yummies) and asked the bartender/waiter if the quail eggs were free range eggs. We did this tongue in cheek, playing off the Portlandia episode about free range foods. In an attempt to impress his costumers, the bartender/waiter corrected us and informed us that the eggs were actually wild-sourced. We thought he was playing so we asked if there were egg-sourcing companies out there hunting eggs in wild habitats- he was quick to defend his original claim, doubling down and telling us that there are wild quail all over San Francisco (where his grandparents lived) so it is not out of the realm of reality to be able to source wild quail eggs in urban Portland. He's probably right, but I bet one would violate any number of Fish and Game laws by snatching eggs from wild quail nests. Food was good- the services was hilariously pretentious.

Great food, AWFUL atmosphere!

By Patti C |

I've always loved this restaurant for casual get togethers and special occasions. After last night I don't know if I will return to this location. We were early and all was well for the first 20 minutes. Then the chaos began. The "music" was changed and cranked up beyond tolerance. I love Talking Heads-type music to energize me to work. It's however absolutely the worst choice for a nice dining experience with any hope of conversation. It was as if it was there only to energize the MANY workers who were all buzzing around as if in a mania. There was a pair of employees, assumably for training, who must have filled our and other's water glasses over a dozen times in the hour we felt was longer than our welcome! We had so may visits from different staff to remove every single dish as SOON as it was empty, I couldn't count. It was awful. The message we got was - get outta here fast. There was no line of diners waiting for tables. I just don't get what employees and managers think is the purpose of this restaurant. So sad to feel uncomfortable, rushed and unwanted ☹️

Best roll I ever ate!

By trynewstuff |

Get the sushi and enjoy every bite!!! It was fresh, best flavor combos and truly nice people. Green tea was authentic

1 hour wait when we were told an hour

By Dane94306 |

We are regulars who come here all the time, but made no difference when my daughter who came from London, jet lagged, had to stand around for 45 minutes due to misinformation, watching lots of folks get seated. Friends of the hostess, probably that's what rates.

Great, responsible sushi, chefs, and atmosphere

By CafeCentral4 |

Bamboo has really great sushi, a large and unique selection of food and sake, chefs that are adept and fun to watch, and the open design of the restaurant gives it a lite and easy atmosphere. They only serve certified sustainable (not over-harvested) fish species, as it should be. One of (the?) best bets in Portland.

BAMBOO SUSHI

By Sofia The Pineapple |

This is one of the best restaurants in Portland. If you love sushi this is the place for you. I recommend 3 rolls. All rolls are good but the green machine, sunset, and chasing the dragon are my favorites. The tempura is amazing. I don’t think you can order anything BAD at Bamboo Sushi. Now let’s talk desserts! My favorite is the spicy chocolate ice cream with toasted marshmallows, peanut butter brittle, and graham cracker chunks!!! It’s the BOMB!!!!!! Service is fair but not extremely fast. It’s not too fast because it’s so popular!!!! If you live in Portland and don’t know where to eat than go here. Trust me you’ll be back!

Good Sushi, Fun Atmosphere

By Pat D |

We had a very nice time at this restaurant. We were not sure how much to order so we ordered a series of small plates. I'm not a sushi fan, other than veggie, but my son and husband said the sushi was extremely good - very fresh and accompanied in some dishes with excellent sauces. If you are a sushi fan, this is a good choice.

First Time Sushi

By Dean C |

Visiting Portland for business. Took some people who had never had sushi before. It was excellent for beginners and sushi lovers. I highly recommend it.

Mixed emotions on this sushi restaurant

By Julian P |

I really liked the Sushi, but the California roll it was very strong in terms of flavors, I would said that the top tempura it's not nice for a sushi, the sashimi it's ok.

Drinks and a snack

By WhoWantsToGo |

Just stopped in with my friend for a couple of drinks and an appetizer on Sunday afternoon for happy hour. I am compelled to write the review because the bartenders were perhaps the friendliest I have come across. There was a man and a women behind the bar and they were both friendly, helpful and provided great service. We shared the eggplant and a roll and both were good. They came out in shifts but I kind of like that when sitting at the bar. And the drinks were very tasty too! We spent an enjoyable hour. Would go back for a full meal.

Excellent Sushi

By rollingwheel |

We have been here a number of times and never leave disappointed. By far, in my opinion, this is the best sushi in Portland. Although servings are bit small, they are absolutely excellent.

Appropriate sushi restaurant

By rtpana |

Good service and vibes. Presentation was good and fish OK. The top layer of the cauliflower appetizer was delicious but the bottom half was submerged in too much sweet sauce. The sushi rolls also had a sweet undertone to them but overall a good experience.

Delightful

By Christina S |

We happened upon this little Japanese restaurant while walking around the Pearl District. We went there for lunch and had a bit of a wait before being seated at the sushi bar. It was worth the wait. The food was delectable and fresh. They had some very creative custom rolls too.

Chefs special

By Ali Van D |

I went with a small group and did the omakase chefs special that lets the chef choose your food for you, you just pick a price point and answer a few questions on what you want most of. The sushi was excellent and they had some really unique rolls. We have a great experience here!

Best Sushi I have had ANYWHERE!

By Jesseebaez |

I have been around the country, and I have had good sushi, but this place blow all of them out of he water. The staff is very attentive, and the service is excellent. I sat at the bar, and the bartender took care of me. I am a adventurous eater, so I let him serve me what he though would be good and pair it with cocktails, and his choices were excellent. If you want to eat sushi in Portland, don't bother going anywhere else.

Fresh fish, great saki

By Sara R |

I'm a big sushi fan. In south Florida there are a lot of really great sushi restaurants. So after reading all the reviews, I was super excited to eat at Bamboo when we were in Portland...and so maybe my expectations were a bit too high, but i was a little disappointed. Everything was VERY fresh and i love that they are sustainable, however I really expected to be blown away. One of the rolls we ordered was loosely rolled and fell apart, the others were good, but not AMAZING. The menu is also a bit small and not very creative in my opinion but all in all, its great a quality restaurant and I would go back again.

SuSHE loved it :)

By tanderson11 |

I highly recommend the green machine!! I ordered 3 and ate them all! My sisters loved them too. My oldest sister eats here everyday....

Save the world, eat here

By bgsu1980 |

Read the reviews, this place is really really good. We had the rolls, highway 65 and California sunshine, sashimi bowl was awesome, great variety. Even the vegetarian in our group found a great noodle dish. And they have a great environmental friendly model, so you are going to get some fish you would never get anywhere else. Got to go.

Freshest sushi we ever had!

By World_traveler_mamma |

We stuffed ourselves with delicious sushi and sampled the happy hour options, an amazing deal for the quality of the sushi!

Outstanding

By Andy G |

Outstanding, original and fresh sushi choices. Big sashimi bowls, fantastic daily specials, superb avocado and cauliflower tempura. Friday the 13th rolls were my favorite.

Best spicy tuna roll!

By Kim G |

Finally made it in to Bamboo after much urging by a friend. I was not disappointed. It was a wonderful experience. The hostess and server were exceptionally friendly and courteous. There was a bit of a wait, so if you're going during a common meal time, be prepared. Also, this is in a busy area so, if you're driving be prepared to park and walk a bit depending on the day/time you are dining. The restaurant feels upscale yet casual, not stuffy. The spicy tuna roll could very well be the best I have ever had. It was light, fresh and flavorful. The tuna tataki was also amazing. They have an extensive menu for both food and drink. It took me a bit to decide, yet the server didn't rush. He thoroughly answered any questions that I had and made excellent suggestions.

Phenomenal Sushi!

By Lexi2000 |

This is hands down the best sushi we have ever had! We've had sushi on the East Coast and the West Coast, plenty of very good sushi, no one has done it this well! It is also sustainably fished! Our waiter was knowledgable and very helpful. The service was great and the restaurant was cosy. The selection of the salmon alone was amazing and the rolls were creative and so delicious! If you're one of those people who has a bucket list, Bamboo Sushi SE has got to be on it! I think I've said enough.

Great Sushi!

By Stephanie A |

Excellent sushi! They are sustainable, and their food was fresh and delicious. I would recommend the garden roll!

Awesome Sushi and Happy Hour

By Peter B |

Great drinks at the bar where an unexpected surprise. I had happy hour menu - specials. Handroll - crab, 4 piece sushi, and special roll. With two drinks I think I stayed under $25 and had more than I could eat. The fish was fresh and the chef specials did have that extra attention that usually comes with a daily special. I go back in a heartbeat

A new favorite

By Azucena |

What a treat. Food and drinks were all outstanding. Servers were all friendly and helpful. The flavor and freshness of the sushi was wonderful. I am lookong forward to our next visit.

Amazing!

By oliviasmom2016 |

Delicious and fresh. Awesome cocktails and sake. Lunch special mix and match is the way to go. Can't wait to go back.

Great food, friendly service

By Liz |

We enjoyed our meal here. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The food arrived fairly quickly. The portions looked quite small compared to the usual amount you get in American restaurants, but they were filling. It's quite expensive, and a big place that can get noisy, but if you choose a more quiet time it's definitely worth a visit. You can even learn some Japanese in the restroom.

Sustainable sushi = the BEST sushi

By MLG |

We enjoyed some of the best sushi ever at Bamboo sushi. We had a reservation and were seated at the sushi bar, where we could watch the chefs work. They were incredible, and truly are masters of their craft. We ordered a few rolls and several pieces, and were attended to by 2 staff members - one waitress who took orders for the kitchen (anything other than sushi), and one of the sushi chefs who prepared our rolls and pieces. He even let us pick which pieces of fish we wanted, and talked to us about which parts of a fish are better/taste different and why. Everything was incredibly fresh and delicious. Truly some of the best sushi we've ever eaten!!

Avoid the sake flight

By 2fussy2016 |

I have dined at Bamboo Sushi Southeast for a number of years and love the food and environment-friendly principles. However, in the last year or so the menu has changed/narrowed and a number of my favorites have disappeared, such as agedashi tofu and ononomiyake. Most disappointing is the presentation of sake flights which are now served as small offerings in huge tumblers that are as attractive as cattle troughs. Overall, a disappointing decline in offerings and presentation.

Excellent Menu and Ambiance

By Colleen C |

Great choices on a diverse menu; service was attentive and quick; atmosphere was relaxed; the best sushi we have had--and we like sushi.

#Good.

By Elyse L |

We went for dinner, and it was very dark, but the sushi was very natural tasting, and delicious. However, the Yakisoba was a little bit too salty. They also have mostly friendly waitresses, and the decoration of the restaurant was very japanese. Recommended....

Great Sushi

By slarty62 |

The best true Japanese food I've eaten since visiting Japan. They even had fried chicken, which I loved in Japan.

A very Good Sushi Restaurant

By reynoldbryan |

I went to Bamboo Sushi last night for a business dinner and was impressed with the food. I was somewhat skeptical when Sushi restaurants are not using Japanese sushi chefs and the American chefs are quite young. With that said I had a great experience at Bamboo Sushi last evening and since I ordered Omikase (leave it up to the Sushi chef to feed you) I was quite impressed by the choices of the fish this young Sushi chef served. I did not have any rolls but they looked fresh, creative and good. The Miso was good but not exceptional. The only complaint that I had was the waitress never re-filled my water glass until the end of the meal and she kept reaching across me while I was eating to remove the empty dishes. That is more of a training issue and manners than an overall service issue. My main server was very attentive and he kept checking in on me and it was not intrusive. I have experienced incredible Sushi all over the World and in the Pacific Northwest and this is a restaurant that I would return to in a heartbeat. Pleasant staff and fresh fish with some aspect of creativity and pride in what they serve.

Amazing!

By Jennifer E |

The sushi was the freshest we have ever had. The sushi chefs were also incredibly friendly & helpful. The green machine was the BEST ROLL EVER! Don't miss this place if you love sushi!

Unexpected

By Faran F |

My mom and I decided to make this our first visit upon arriving to Portland. We both are not city dwellers so parking was hard for us on that rainy night. Then when we got into the restaurant we were pleasantly greeted and told it was a twenty minute wait. Within five minutes we were at a table much faster then anticipated. The service was super speedy and the waitress was very patient with us. We got an order of the shashito peppers, and seaweed salad so yummy. Then I got a tuna dish and my mom got assorted sushi. All of the seafood was so fresh tasting and well prepared! The environment was awesome and the bathrooms were so cool teaching you Japanese!

New favorite!

By steaknife503 |

Amaizing service, excellent food, and stellar drinks. New favorite sushi joint is Portland. We will be going back for sure !

Delicious Sushi and Great Service!

By Courtney M |

My friend and I are here while we were traveling for work. We didn’t have a reservation, but they were able to seat us within minutes. The server was very friendly and knowledgeable. She was able to make good recommendations. She was also training another server, and the trainee was also doing a great job! The sushi rolls were amazing! We also ordered poke, which was a bit on the small side, but it was very fresh! I had the happy hour rose and it was great. My friend ordered the cold sake on happy hour and she really enjoyed it. Since we were on a work trip, we had to split the bill up and take itemized receipts, etc. Both servers were on top of our separate check situation and they handled it wonderfully! Please keep in mind the restaurant does not accept cash!

Outstanding!

By Lisa C |

We loved it. Absolutely the best sushi we've had. Basically stumbled upon this place not knowing a thing about it. Will come back here again and again. Great atmosphere. We were seated much more quickly than the 10-15 minute wait we were told. Great drinks too - we had a bourbon grapefruit somethings or other. Very good! Also had dessert - whiskey boudino, a whiskey pudding with sea salt caramel. Delicious!!

100% Sustainable Seafood

By sleepyhead8822 |

It's only a few places in the United States where you can eat Sushi and have it 100% sustainable. Bamboo Sushi is one of those places. I had the salmon sampler, the Alaska Coho salmon is tops in my book. A little loud on a Saturday night but the food is great.

Three times!

By AOneWorldTraveler |

Yes, we ate there three times during our 2.5 days in Portland! The sushi doesn't get any better unless you're in Japan or Hawaii. If you go during their Happy Hour the menu offers amazing prices for the same items. Have the Salmon Sunrise and Crunchy Tuna Nigiri and the local Albacore. OH, if you like mushrooms get the Japanese Miso Mushrooms. Great service and attention to dietary preferences and food allergies!

Fantastic friendly service and great sushi

By BeenThereEatenThat |

Delicious rolls and sashimi. Staff were extremely accommodating, doing everything they can to make our visit perfect -- particularly wonderful with our three year old boy. We ate in one night (busy) and ordered take out a few nights after. We would definitely return next time we are in the area. Given all the blurb about sustainable fish, it would have been so great to have an organic soy sauce option too. My only tiny bugbear! Thanks for an awesome experience.

Vacation in Portland

Beautiful decor, fantastic fresh menu options. Really enjoyed all of our choices. Would love to visit again when in town.

Dinner

By tr8lin |

This place was very cute, decor, waiters, staff, and atmosphere I would give them four stars. Only reason I gave them a three is because it took forever to get our food. We didn't get it together there were three of us. My friend got his appetizer and finished it before I got mine. My husband got his food before any of us and finished it before my friend got his first roll. This was in a span of 30 min. After my friend got his first roll I had to order another appetizer to hold me over till my roll got there. Which that worked my appetizer I ordered 30 min after my roll got to me before my roll. If you plan on going here go with the intention to mingle and have plenty of time to sit and talk with your friends. Don't come to hungry. It took about 45 min after ordering my food to get my one roll I ordered. All in all we were in no hurry and was fine talking and hanging out. Other than the fact that I was hungry.

Great food albeit overpriced

By Nicole C |

I went for happy hour and found the happy hour prices quite high, as well as the main menu. I did really enjoy the food and will most likely return!

Lake Oswego friends took us here prior to a concert. Wonderful sushi, various dishes shared among the 4 of us.

Right in the middle of downtown

By Greg W |

If you love sushi, you'll love Bamboo. Their sake selection is superb. They offer an excellent spicy fish egg with a quail egg on top. The sushi bar is also a great place to eat alone or with a guest. All of the sushi is super fresh and the atmosphere is very Portland.

Excellent, Creative Sushi & Friendly Staff

By Ben N |

Sat at the bar and enjoyed chatting with bartender and friendly foodie patron. I had a couple delicious entrees, but my bar-mate had a chef's choice selection of a dozen or more dishes. Everything looked great; he ate with pleasure and gusto, and I had food envy! Go, have a chef's choice meal and explore the flavors. Enjoy

the absolute best!

By lindamstern |

This is the best sushi I've ever had--and I could come here every night!! All their fish is sustainably sourced and incredibly fresh and tasty. And they do have other things on the menu--the potato box (sweet potato with feta cheese and crispy, little shavings of sweet potato in a yummy sauce) is out of this world, as is the truffled avocado. But you can't go wrong. If you love sushi, don't miss Bamboo Sushi!!

Simply amazing!

By Giovanni M |

Meat it's amazing, from wagyu, to the best sausage ever and various salame and mortadella. Really unique! I'll be back in few days with friend. Personnel very professional.

What a treat!

By Beoutdoors0723 |

My grown daughter and I arrived in Portland late in the afternoon on December 31, 2015. My son, who lives in Portland, surprised us with New Year's Eve dinner at Bamboo. Since we had all three lived or traveled in Japan, it was a delightful, wonderful surprise. The food is, to use an over used word, amazing! The dishes that we ordered had traditional Japanese flavors, but the presentation and combination of ingredients is unique. I hope to go there every time I visit Portland! That's saying a lot since there are so many outstanding restaurantants in the foodie capital of the world! Of special note, the sake menu is wonderful. Ask one of the servers for a recommendation.

Sushi Lovers this is the Place!

By Susan S |

In town for Mother's Day weekend with my favorite boys, we dropped in to Bamboo Sushi and it was a great experience. Fun, friendly staff, attention to detail and our plates of luscious foods arrived. We started with Miso which was great hydration after a morning bike ride. Chasing the Drago, Green Machine and Garden of Eden followed. All were delicious but my personal favorite was the Green Machine which consists of Tempura friend long bean and green onion, topped with avocado and cilantro sweet chile aioli. Must visit for Sushi lovers!

Bamboo

We walked in without a reservation (don't know if they take them) and waited at the bar for about 40 minutes for a table. Very good sushi, sashimi, and rolls with a nice selection of sake. Friendly service.

Great food, poor service

By Tiffany J |

My friend and I checked out this place last weekend on our weekend trip to Portland. We ate at the SW location which I believe is the newest one. We heard great reviews but unfortunately were disappointed. Our waiter (blond hair with a ponytail but didn't catch his name) wasn't friendly and appeared to be rushing us out of the restaurant. We placed our order for an appetizer and some rolls - but the rolls immediately started coming out within 5 minutes and before the appetizer. I had finished my drink yet he kept walking by and never asked if I would like another one. We were in and out the door within 45 minutes. The food itself was pretty good but cocktails were overpriced and just ok. I was disappointed with the overall service and unfortunately it's the one restaurant reservation I did not enjoy in Portland.

Just alright .... nothing stellar about it !

By JetSetJessa |

Visited bamboo sushi and really wasn't impressed . Some of the items were absurdly spicy like the cauliflower and the sweet shrimp heads . I'm not a fan of Cajun sushi lol so ya it really wasn't for me. As lots of places in Portland it tries so hard to be different and forgets how to just be good . Won't be back . Sorry Bamboo !

Amazing

By Stephy L |

I just dont know if you can find better sushi. Plus it's ethically caught. The only downside is no reservations and there is always a wait. But it's well worth it!

Best sushi!

By Guyba |

One of the best sushi that I have ever eaten! Everything that we tasted was amazing. The atmosphere is good, Great cocktails and good service.

Incredible

By Steve C |

Not sure what someone could have ordered here to grade the food as simply average. Having had sushi all over North America, this place ranks near the very top. This isn't about over-the-top presentation with flowers and other unnecessary decorations, it's all about flavors. Bamboo sushi is very unique in what they do. All I can say is, if you consider yourself a 'foodie', this is a must try stop in Portland.

Fresh sushi n great service

By imtedious |

I dropped n here twice for lunch and HH. Great fresh sushi! HH specials are exceptional. Bar service was attentive. I highly recommend this place.

Good enough

By dollypiamaria |

If your looking for good enough sushi. Nothing wildly exciting or memorable Bamboo is a sure bet. Service was was nice but a little slow. It's a busy centrally located venue.

Awesome Sushi

By NBrown18 |

Bamboo Sushi is the best! It's a way to eat delicious sushi and support sustainable fishing practices at the same time. Everything I've ever had there has been phenomenal. Highly recommend trying it!

Great Sushi

By emes9 |

Fresh sushi, service was good, the prices were reasonable, and in a nice location, easy parking - I'll be going back!

It's the Chef and the Server

By Chris0214 |

Go early so you don't have to wait in line. The line can be long and it grows quickly. We decided to let our server choose a variety of dishes that she felt the Chef was doing particularly well. It was a great decision and we had some of the best Sushi dishes we have ever had. In case you are wondering she did not just choose all the most expensive items on the menu. I think our experience was enhanced tremendously by our server. With each dish she placed before us she explained what it was and the best way to consume it. Tremendous experience!

Perfect Portlandia Experience but meh food

By Chris B |

Just got into town and saw this place, and decided to give it a try. The greeter whom told us we'd have to wait 15 minutes, despite 2 or 3 open tables and no one waiting, was perfectly dressed with high waisted pants and a nose ring. She took us too our table and we waited roughly the same 15 minutes for a greeting. Every sushi fish item had a description telling us whether it was line caught, pole caught, free caught, long line caught, net caught, trolled, naturally sourced, sustainably farmed, gluten free, etc, and when we asked about yellowtail or hamachi, we were roundly rejected with an "oh no, those fish or not naturally sourced and we do not serve them." Looked like the countless tables of long beards, and knit cap hipsters were enjoying themselves, but it was seriously an episode of Portlandia. If you are looking for a good normal selection of tasty rolls or just good nigiri, you won't find it here. Very precious food and weak wine list. Good selection of sake however, and even though the servers are gruff, you might have a good time laughing at the sanctity of the food and the cliche of the clientele.

Pretty Good Food Sake and Service.

By William C |

We had rolls. Rolls are rolls. Yes sometimes they can be sub standard but this was really pretty good. Great sake selection. Service was really good (they knew the sake list and let us sample several before selecting). And not overly $$$. If we return I'd like to try the rest of the menu ... I suspect they do everything well.

Special Seaweed

By h22101 |

I've been to a lot of special sushi restaurants and like this one better than most. It wasn't overly precious and the food was excellent. It wasn't even terribly over-priced. The service was also good - our waiter told us what we got when we got it. We didn't wait long for our table. It was ready earlier than estimated and we were able to stroll around for the half hour, which passed quickly on NW 28th.

Delicious Dinner

By Grimace58 |

Amazing service, sit at the sushi bar and had an amazing experience. Nicely priced and definitely a place anyone hitting Portland should visit!

Delicious!

By sinukas |

Fast service and delicious sushi! We didn't have to wait very long to get seated. Great variety of options for people with specific digestive needs.

Very slow kitchen

By Robert S |

We get that this place is popular but to wait almost two hours to get two orders of sushi was very disappointing.Servers were good and food quality good but kitchen needs to have a better system to prep and deliver the food.

Good Again

By 205LindaG |

Such a good variety it was hard to decide what to get so we got 6 different items and shared....some vegan, some vegetsrian, and an awesone hamburger.

One of a kind

By Rreed20 |

My partner and I stopped in for a quick bite and a drink while in Portland for a long weekend. We sat at the bar and Tiffany took care of us. She helped us plan the rest of our visit and was a pleasure to talk to. I’d definitely recommend stopping in!

Average

By Travellinglight81 |

Nice restaurant inside, good decor and friendly staff. Food however was average. There was a lot of tempura battered items, the sushi was okay, chicken karaage a bit dry. The portions were far too big, our waitress didn’t inform us that with a couple of our choices one order was actually enough for sharing and we didn’t need to double up as we had. This was quite annoying as not only did we end up with too much food, it was wasteful as we couldn’t finish it or take it away due to our travelling situation. A bit of a disappointment of a meal for us but we didn’t try everything on the menu. They currently offer a 15% off voucher if you sign up to their mailing list online.

Excellent sushi

By Javier C |

Let yourself be guided by the waiter, and he will delight you with an exquisite variety of dishes including Terigami, Sushi, and all your favourite Jap selection. We were in 12 and the waiter gracefully orchestrated a non-stop series of exquisite dishes. Bravo!

Tasty sushi in Portland

By thurstonbow |

The restaurant has a good vibe and can get pretty loud, as it is packed. Once seated, the dishes came out fast and the sushi was fresh. There are a variety of interesting rolls, but I stuck with the chirashi which provided fish, and shellfish. Overall a very good restaurant. Make reservations if you decide to go; otherwise you may be waiting.

Sustainable delicious sushi

By JeffroDubya |

This place is the beeez kneeeez guys. Ordered the Salmon Flight and I highly recommend the kombu salmon melts in your mouth. We sat at the sushi bar and had James our sushi chef was absolutely killing it. Downside to this place is the wait on nights/weekends, the host staff are unorganized and forgetful. Definitely call ahead and make a reservation you're going to need it.

World class, sustainable and utterly delectable

By Courtney S |

The chef's tasting menu was one of the best I have ever had. The albacore is so divine that words alone can not do it justice. I wish I lived closer because I would try to go here at least once a week.

Fusion of Oregon and Japanese

By FlyingInternational |

We walked into a dimly lit restaurant on 23th street: liquor bar and high tables/stools in front, dining area with tables/chair in the middle, and a sushi bar surrounding an open kitchen bringing up the rear. Water was brought out almost immediately. We waited a few minutes for a server wondering if there was a table mix-up in the service. Eventually, a server arrived to give us a bowl of edaname, menus, and take our drink orders. The menu consisted of Japanese small dishes and sushi rolls/nigiri. We tried the tasting menu, which apparently is a chef’s choice from the regular menu. Incredible: Wooded and earthy braised shitake mushrooms, thinly sliced smell-in-your-mouth albacore carpaccio, succulent miso black cod, amazing smoked mackerel cooked in a multi-layered bamboo steamer, white fish sauced in ponzu sauce, grilled shishito pepper sauced with miso/butter and bacon. Mixed: a rich-to-a-fault sea urchin crème brulee, poke sushi that could have been made tastier with half as much rice, a play on seafood pizza (okonomiyaki) that may be an acquired taste. Less successful: tsukemono of different pickled fruit/vegetables those colorful and artful display distracted from the lack of flavor differentiation, richly buttered Japanese yams topped with crispy yam threads which should have stopped at one piece per person for the tasting menu. Traditionally, the food comes to the table as soon as it is ready. In our case, the food came out rather too efficiently; sometimes before we were finished with the prior dish, sometimes two dishes would come out together; sometimes in a different order than the menu order; and usually some combination of the above. We felt rushed to get thru the meal, so it was distracting from trying to savor the food. Maybe if we had sat at the bar and not at a table, the service would have been smoother. In the end, we tasted the gamut of the menu. We surely had menu items that we would not have had if we tried to navigate the menu on our own. We found out what we liked and didn’t like, and learned to sit at the sushi bar next time.

Bamboo's newest location doesn't disappoint

By Valerie H |

I am always up for sushi and I can be very happy with conveyor belt sushi but this... this is another level of sushi. The several times I have been to the NW Bamboo has always been an excellent experience. Great service, excellent food and gluten free options that taste delish. For a night out with friends I decided to give the newest addition a try partially because NW is terrible for parking and they don't take reservations. The SW location took reservation via OpenTable and we parked across the street at the parking garage, walked in and sat down. Magical. Everything was just as yummy as the NW location and the service was excellent despite the restaurant being packed. Food arrived all together and it was an excellent night. Bamboo Sushi for the win. Highly Recommended.

Price was too high for quality

By Jessica R |

I love sushi and this place did not even top the cheap conveyor belt hole in the walls. Quality was poor at it's best for the price paid.

Amazingly fresh sushi

By Bigcrayon777 |

The sushi without saying is superb. Everything was light, fresh, and promptly served. I would like to give a gracious nod to the Sake menu. I really liked all their choices. An amazing dining experience to be had here.

best Sushi in Portland

By ThomasHome |

This is an awesome Sushi restaurant with a great menu and a very good sake selection. We went there with some friends of my daughter for her birthday and all of us loved the food. Some of my daughters friends are vegetarians and even they had a great time, there vegetarian Sushi was great. If you are there, try the 'Green Machine", an awesome vegetarian role. Having said that, the real reason to go there is their sushi, fresh and a lot of variety with quite a few types of roles I've never experienced before. Also the service was excellent, our waiter was fun, helpful and quick. If you are in Portland, go and check it out! Reservations are recommended.

Easily one of the top 3 sushi places in Portland.

By Kate H |

This place can get crowded fast, and they only take reservations for parties of 7+, so get there early! The food is utterly phenomenal. Must-tries are the Green Machine and the Pdx Roll.

Great food

By 57heinz57 |

Our family of six people and two children had a great time with wonderful food. We shared about nine different items and all of them were great.

Seriously dope sushi

By Miguel P |

Awesome fish, and amazing in house Manhattan's... Give it a try and see what your think. I recommend the uni with quail egg as well.

Sushi does not do justice to the food

By gyw |

Sushi as in rice topped with fish is not what this place is about. Imaginative rolls of tasty seafood along with great tasting appetizers like miso mushrooms and eggplant are the base of this menu. Nigiri is an afterthought after looking at the menu. Besides, can afford to skip a Wagyu 1/2 pound burger (sushi restaurant?). Ok, the nigiri is pretty good too but the rolls are what you will crave for a return visit. Expect to wait for a seat at dinner time but it is worth the time.

Best burger I have ever had.

By Gabriel W |

Last night, I went here and got one of their burgers. It was amazing probably, the best one I've had. And it was at a sushi restaurant. That says something

A nice dinner at the downtown location

By HomerWellsSD |

I ate here recently for dinner with my daughter at the downtown location. We came early so did not have to wait. We enjoyed it very much. We chose a number of the speciality rolls which were excellent. We have eaten sushi all over the US and enjoyed our meal. We sat at the sushi bar and the service was good. The price was reasonable. Would definitely eat here again and would recommend it to others.

Fresh and delicious

By Theresa M |

Very busy on a Saturday evening but worth the wait. Were seated at the sushi bar which made it difficult to conversant but fun to watch the chiefs make the rolls. Super quick service (once seated) and friendly wait staff.

Delightful meal

By hemmingway2016 |

We had a delightful meal at Bamboo Sushi on 28tb st in Portland. The service was not only spo on but the server was very helpful . The menu was eclectic and different. There were four of us and each had a different selection. I had scallops which were delicious, my husband had the Green Dragon and thought it was exceptional! The cauliflower spicy and amazing! The hamburger was incredible! Great place to dine!

Best service and Sushi

By Ann L |

Bamboo has some of the best Sushi we have ever eaten. They had a great selection of very unique specials. We tried several they all were amazing. Waygu Beef Carpaccio style was out of this world. Our server was super nice, very helpful. Can't wait to make another trip to Portland to eat here again.

Interesting sushi menu

By sjam2014 |

I love sushi and was not disappointed at all in the menu or the food at Bamboo. Cocktail menu has some interesting options also. A nice mix of hot and cold options too. Would definitely recommend booking at the weekend.

BEST OF THE WEST

By srfotog |

This restaurant pretty much shocked me as I haven't had great Japanese food outside Japan very often. I have lived in NY and LA and always find a good Japanese restaurant because it's my favorite food. I wish I lived closer to Bamboo Sushi. Wonderful, very fresh sushi, lots of traditional Japanese meals to choose from. I am in pig heaven every time I got there.

Very very fresh fish with service that exceeds the PDX standard

By EvanT543 |

We had tuna that had been caught that morning and a flight of four different salmon. The staff was extremely helpful with making selections and offered a cold sake flight so that we could sample some and make a more informed choice. The rolls are creative and I cannot say enough about the quality of the fish. A little bit of the Portland passive-aggressive attitude from the host, but that is to be expected here. Give me NY with the aggressive-aggressive attitude every time.

Delicious and Excellent Customer Service

By Stephanie A |

I love sushi, and this place has some of the best I've ever eaten. The appetizers are also wonderful, and should not be ignored. It's expensive to dine here, but my husband and I splurge a few times a year on date nights because customer service is truly 5 stars.

Made very good impression and food presentation

By lennytim828 |

Bamboo sushi - spicy scallop roll, garden of eden, spider roll - Atmosphere is relaxed with upbeat - - music in background - restaurant printed their mission as limiting their environmental footprint and only power their location with sustainable woods and non toxic chemicals - restaurant layout has a center island sushi bar and tables for the rest, spacious and airy - served hairy Japanese cooked beans as complimentary appetizer - ordered spider rolls/msc Salmon Nation Roll which is asparagus, cucumber, avocado and wrap in salsa and Lucky 13 which is crab, scallop, cilantro and cucumber - light, ambiance and salmon melts in your mouth

Great for vegans

By JasperMarks |

The Green Machine roll can be vegan and is beyond amazing. I also like getting avocado rolls, simple but delicious. My omnivore guests loved their sushi, and gobbled up some of my vegan sushi. Long wait times. Was told 40 minutes, but was almost double that.

Deliciously Gluten Free

By Madeleine G |

A great restaurant to go to if you’re looking for gluten free Japanese. The whole menu is gluten free, besides a few items that a marked with “Gluten”. The food was made fresh by the chef, standing across from us as we sat at the bar. Fantastic service, a great eat.

Best Sushi in PDX

By Patricia D |

Great atmosphere, amazing cocktails (try their signature manhattan) and the best sushi I've ever had in Portland. Their Happy Hour menu is worth making it in early and their additional locations makes them more accessible than ever.

Delicious japanese cuisine!

By EatWell2014 |

I'm very fussy about Japanese food. This was spot on. The rice is perfect. The agedashi tofu was the best I've ever eaten, the fish was amazing, and the decor is modern. Fantastic drink list. First time I've ever been able to order a glass of prosecco in a Japanese restaurant. Love it all!

Busy restaurant and delicious sushi

By Trip-chick80 |

Came here on a Saturday night and was a line of people giving their names for a table so had to wait about 15/20 mins. Was pretty sure that some youngsters jumped the queue and sat down before us! The waitress recommend some dishes for us which were all wonderful. Our friend who eats here occasionally recommended the 'green machine' which was particularly tasty.

Excellent Sushi, particularly good happy hour

By RIDPDX |

The sushi here is generally very good, and the restaurant makes a serious effort to be eco-friendly. You can read more about that within the restaurant. The happy hour has excellent value, and we tend to use that when we can. We have gone back often. Service has been occasionally mixed, mostly from confused orders or longer waits, but they always make it right.

Changes, not for the better

By 545Lisa |

There has always been wait time for a seat (at the sushi bar or otherwise) at Bamboo Sushi, but unlike past years this year (we have gone here for our anniversary for the past five years or more) we were told one could not order a drink from the bar while waiting. A drink wiuid have made things easier, since the process for seating people was chaotic; there were two parties waiting ahead of us (with varying numbers of people). There were tables--all cleared and set--for all three parties, including ours. All of us were eventually seated at the obvious tables. No one knew why, then, it took 15-20 minutes for any of us to be seated. Once seated at a table, we were not given the edomome everyone else was offered. We were told the chef's choice sashimi (one of past favorites) could only be ordered if one sat at the sushi bar. And one roll we ordered (marked gluten free on the menu, which is important since my husband is celiac) was not, we were finally told (after another five to ten minute wait), really gluten free. We were able to order something else, but the roll we were told we should not, after all, order--and which we did not get, let alone eat--was nonetheless listed on our bill. Finally, although what we finally ate wasn't bad, it was nothing special . . . as, in the past it has been. Alas, our go-to place for special occasions is no longer going to be Bamboo Sushi.

Some of the best sushi I have had!

By natatafish |

On the East Coast, it isn't easy to find fish that is sustainably fished. I was delighted to find that Bamboo makes eating in an eco concious manner easy and effortless. They serve really unique rolls and offer traditional sake service. I'm glad to have experienced this gem!

Phenomenal sushi!

By Tatyana K |

What a great experience. The freshest seafood and outstanding service. We had several appetizers and rolls. Everything was amazing. Outdoor seating was perfect on this breezy evening. We cannot wait to visit this place again.

Expected Better

By FransDavis |

I am from the east coast and could not wait to eat sushi at a west coast restaurant again. The rolls were tiny vs our restaurant that we frequent in Maryland. And when you order sashimi you get 2 pieces vs our 3. Fish was fresh, but way over price for the amount. Would not recommend to anyone. The person I went with was from the west coast and agreed with me.

WONDERFUL sushi

By ButBeuatiful |

We ate here twice, at the NW and SW locations during our week in Portland. Both were delightful. The food is wonderful, we ordered The Local and Kimono and both were excellent. Ate outside and truly enjoyed the weather and ambiance. Great selection of beer and wine. Highly recommend.

Yummy!

By Jenny D |

It was packed when we arrived. The four of us ordered a variety of sushi and saki. Every bite was incredible. Very good place for sushi!

My Family Loves Sushi

By rockhound94 |

We were 10 people with four teenagers. We were celebrating our grandson's birthday. This was his choice This is true sushi restaurant that prepares the each piece fresh. I can only list the choices we made - Amberjack Nigiri, Ora King Salmon, Coho Salmon Nigiri, Tuna Nigiri, Chasing the Dragon, Orient Express, Avocado Tempura, Vegetable Tempura, Steamed Bun, Green Machine, Dayboat Albacore and Green Machine with Albacore. I'm not generally a fish eater but I had a few bites but enjoyed a wagyu burger. There was nothing left on any plate.

I contributed to their high rent

By Andrew L |

The sad economic truth often pits practicality with quality. Yes it’s true that the cheapest meat: chicken thighs can be prepared so well that they are raised to become a sanctified and desireabke morsel. It requires a commitment and diligence and skill. The use of fancy sauces and ornate presentation can disguise fish that may not stand up to being in a basic maki. A three tablespoon cocktail for $10 and a bright color is not so interesting. Here we see the “pay the rent” sleight of hand at work. It looks good so pay the price. I felt like I got hustled. I recommend that developers who create retail space under the exorbitant condos allow the area culture to grow and survive and support your investment in the community by keeping retail rent low.

Delicate Perfection

By Katherine A |

Bamboo Sushi is one of the best places in Portland to have a perfect dining experience. The fish is fresh and the service is friendly. Try the Salmon Flight with a friend. My favorite combination is the truffled avocado with any piece of fish. Sorry there's a bite out if it in the photo... I couldn't wait!

Lunch

By sleepyhead8822 |

One of the very few 100% sustainable Sushi restaurants in America. Great sourcing, a lot of creativity in the kitchen, Bamboo is firing on all cylinders. I especially love their wild Alaskan Coho salmon. Great taste and a firm texture. They also have a fantastic Sake selection.

Delicious; a bit spendy

By GoDucks99 |

Great atmosphere. More creative menu than most sushi restaurants. Delicious food. I had two different specials. Outstanding. Good service despite a large Friday night crowd. Also, good drinks menu. For four, we spent $109 (with 2 drinks). Will return again.

Good not Great

By Ivonne B |

We went here the other day and while we enjoyed it I was surprised at its popularity for the price. It was good but not amazing. If budget is not a concern definitely check it out, otherwise I'd recommend skipping.

Late week day dinner

By Nancy S |

Bamboo Sushi late dinner is always a winner. Settle in with a signature cocktail. Your appetizers of veggie tempura and cauliflower will be served in minutes piping hot. The folks are a perfect combination and will leave little room for dessert. Always want to dine here when I’m in town.

One of the better sushi places in Portland.

By HikeBiker |

Surely one of the better places in Portland to get sushi. The quality of fish is great but the place is pretty cramped and the prices are pretty steep but it's worth it.

Slow service and just ok sushi

By Melissa B |

I went here because it was rated so high, however I was very disappointed. I ordered 2 rolls (via sushi chef) which came before my waitress even stopped by to take my drink order. I waited over 30 minutes to get my check and forget about a refill on my drink. Sushi was just ok. I've definitely had better. Very disappointed visit.

Really great sushi and great service. Recommended

By Journeyman78 |

Had a great meal here. The weather was nice so was able to take one of the outside seats. Really nice dining experience. The waiter was great. Well worth a visit if youre in Portland

Great sushi with wide variety

By PictureMom |

Got table for 4 without reservations on Friday night at 6 after 10 minute wait. Staff friendly, answered questions well, attentive and prompt. Loved the local roll. Lucky 13 was less well received. First time sushi eater enjoyed basic tuna toll. Trout sushi enjoyed by roll-only eater. Couldn't pass truffled avocado nigiri - yum!

If you Love Sushi, the Bamboo is a must

By debbill |

Heard about Bamboo on Tripadvisor and was planning a trip to Portland. We made reservations at Bamboo and we not disappointed. My husband who swears that he hates Sushi actually ate and loved every minute of the meal. The waiter was one the best. Made suggestions along our way. This is a definite must for anyone who lives in or is visiting Portland

Worth the wait

By bsimonis |

We had about a 30 minute wait on a Tuesday evening before we were seated. Table for two, service was friendly and efficient. We ordered two plates of rolls and nigiri. We've waited a long time at other sushi places, but not here. Our food arrived quickly and it was delicious. Flavorful, the right amount of heat in the spicy tuna and the salmon melted in your mouth. A return visit is definitely in the cards! And, if you're staying around the corner at the Mark Spencer hotel, you can order Bamboo Sushi as room service!

Excellent sushi and more!

By DennisG50 |

Wonderfully fresh sushi, great service, great sake selection and in a great downtown location! We enjoyed our meal....and everyone gets edamame to start! There is something for everyone on the menu and it is all good!

Pricey, but delicious

By ReineS |

The fish is delicate, flavorful and fresh, but the highlight of the meal came at the end when I ordered the sea urchin creme brûlée. Phenomenal! I've been twice and everything on the menu was wonderful. Wait staff is attentive and friendly. Highly recommended.

Best sushi I've ever tasted...

By 233BK233 |

Being from the mid-west, we don't get fresh fish. I don't know if it was that fact or the fact that this is just a great sushi place... but my wife & I enjoyed our Garden of Eden & Friday the 13th roll. Highly, highly recommended.

Please Eat Sushi Responsibly

By Bouzouki |

Sounds kinda funny that all these folks in this restaurant gorging themselves on sliced fish can be sustainable but at least they make the effort at taking some responsibility (see their website). It's always refreshing to see businesses with a conscience. Oh... the food. Very nice sides and apps with the exception of the mostly flacid tsukemono (pickles). We ordered sushi and rolls. All fish seemed fresh and delicate, though kinda pricey. I like to keep it rather traditional and elemental with sushi so I didn't like the signature or special rolls too much. Overall experience was positive and friendly although I detected much confusion at the hostess station causing a delay in our seating. Waitress was polite but couldn't be relied on for expert guidance. For that, I guess you need to sit at the sushi bar an chat with the chef!

Awesome food. Awesome Service. Great Ambiance

By LizaFly1266 |

While this place required us to wait for a table (on a Saturday night), the wait was comfortable and it was interesting to watch people come and go. There is a bar, a sushi bar, and tables. The place is fairly small, so it is a tight fit, but the ambiance is great. The food, while not the cheapest nor the most expensive was awesome. Especially the okonomiyaki (savory pancake with shrimp, mushrooms, parmesan fried oysters, aioli, and eel sauce) and the gingersnap and salted caramel powder (with chai ice cream and caramel sauce). We tried the sushi as well and found it amazing.

Celebratory Sushi and Sake Night

By Merry |

As one of my favorite neighborhood splurges, I adore the happy hour here. Over the past few years, the menu has changed repeatedly and the HH prices have declined to be quite as valuable, but the melt-in-your-mouth savory flavor satisfaction always wins. Most recently, I brought a date here for a birthday and was treated to a complimentary dessert, the Whiskey Budini pudding which was a delightful close to our sake, beautiful rolls and seared scallop nigiri. Popularity, however, rarely makes this a top choice if you are in a hurry to be somewhere after your meal.

Delightful surprise

By qilin037 |

Didn't expect to find this level of quality for Japanese food in this part of the continent, but what a delightful surprise Bamboo was. Top picks: pancakes and the yam posing as potato. Looking forward to eating there the next time we visit Portland!

Amazing sushi and nice selection

By Kathleen W |

Noisy fun on a Saturday night. Great energy and service. Lots of selections beside sushi. Trust the staff to recommend something. You won't be disappointed. Great sashimi, fresh and sustainable. Locations on NW 23rd, 12th St downtown and Alberta st so no excuses for not trying Bamboo.

Awesome Salmon Selection

By Cape_Cod_Antoine |

Bamboo's salmon selection was great and well paired with the sake flight that was recommended to me by the waitress. I'll definitely visit again when I return to Portland.

Felt like pampered regulars on our first visit.

By pat1955sf |

Best Sushi, Service, and Beverage selection ever. Everything was melt in your mouth delicious! The Tuna, Steak and Shrimp Pancakes were mouthwateringly great. Our Server was top notch and our wine selection went well will the mix-up of items we enjoyed. We will return soon!

Sushi and more

By Liav1616 |

Amazing fish. The sushi s done like it should. Nigiri and sashimi looks and tastes great. We sat on the bar which I would recommand. Great service. Good food. They also make a mean Hamburger. Very nice cocktail menu. If you like your fish in a raw manner then you have found your spot. With a cocktail it was about 35-40$ per person and we left the place full.

Attentive, knowledgable and friendly service and great sushi

By mjanack |

We had such a wonderful experience at this restaurant. Our server gave us a variety of sakes to taste and explained them all. And the food was phenomenal. Fresh creative and sustainably harvested. I'll be back next time I'm in Portland.

Pleasant Evening in Hawthorne District

By Mary A |

We enjoyed this restaurant with its floor to ceiling open windows so we could enjoy the outdoors without the sun. And a bonus was a table close to the front without a reservation. The tempura was good with a nice variety of vegetables. There was an interesting selection of special sushi rolls. Would recommend the Garden of Eden -- eight large tuna rolls nicely presented and enough for a full meal. Would highly recommend this restaurant!

Best Sushi in Portlan

By Kristi B |

I am a self-proclaimed sushi snob. I almost never love a sushi restaurant, but this one was incredible. The sushi was delicious, fresh and inventive. Our amazing server picked the menu for us. Salmon sushi was our only requirement and it passed my fresh salmon test. The rest of it was incredible and the sake menu is extensive.

this place was amazing!

By kokosandiego |

we literally stumbled onto this place, as our restaurant of choice was across the street and they had not space inside...were we ever glad of that! We LOVED Bamboo...great vibe, interior very eclectic Asian, great staff...................but the sushi, food, appetizers, drinks............ALL EXCELLENT....We go to Hawaii every year and think it is the best sushi anywhere...well guess what, Bamboo you guys hit the mark! Thank you for your philosophy of serving food that has a sustainable quality, of being careful of what you serve and from where you obtain it.. we will be there again when in Portland.

The Crispy Rice is unique and worth a visit to try this great dish

By ILMMCT |

Great food, atmosphere and friendly service. Unique rolls, wonderful flavors. The Spicy Tuna “Crispy Rice” was fantastic… well done Bamboo Sushi!

Birthday dinner for my wife.

By winjo1940 |

My wife and I were introduced to traditional Japnese food in 1970 in the San Francisco Bay Area. It became one of our most favorite foods from soups, to grilled food, and sashimi to sushi. For some unknown reason critiques raved about this place. There was not thing on the menu that was triditonal and nothing had a Japense name so ordering real sushi was nonexistent. Everything on the limited menu was based on where the seafood came from like Hawaii, Spain, New Zealand or Norway. It was suggested that I have the Albacore Carpaccio which was one of the most discussing thing that I have ever eaten. The place did not even know how to make a martini. Forget about eating at Bamboo Sushi because it is not Japanese but some event in progress.

Reserve a seat if you decided to go

To me this was an average based on my previous experience in Portland. Kitchen is good, tasty, but small variety of rolls in menu.

Great food, wrong bill, very wrong!

The food was delicious. The pics on this page are wrong: interior of a different restaurant I think. The bill was wrong: we had ordered each the omakase menu and the waiter had calculated one omakase menu and dor one all the dished separately (much more expensive) and when I asked here about it she said the bill was "no exact mathematics". Really? Hidden camera???

A gorgeous roll and tasty

I gave this a 5 because I travel so much and this place surprised me. The food was outstanding and the presentation was a true hit. It is an upscale looking environment with some unique sushi rolls, but the bartender was awesome to us even though we were not drinking. They were fun, and we were quite happy to eat at the bar and skip the wait. Great green tea and I would try anything off that menu. I will go back and recommend based on our experience in July.

My favorite sushi in Portland

The location is busy, so be prepared with reservations or to have a short-to-moderate wait. Excellent pork buns, and every roll from the sushi menu is beautiful and flavorful. Cocktail menu is nice, especially for evenings out with friends.

Great Sushi Bar

We loved this sushi bar. They had a wide array of fresh fish, including some not often offered in most sushi bars, and an amazing sake menu. All fresh, beautifully prepared and presented. The vegan rolls were exceptional. Not your standard cucumber and avocado slices. Very cozy and intimate restaurant. Two rolls, 3 orders nigiri and 1 beer for $50.
