Fabulous brunch

By rrosepetal |

Chanced upon this little gem in a San Antonio suburb. Little Portland style restaurant with limited seating. So worth the wait though because the food is amazing! Our party had the Caesar salad, fried chicken(party in your mouth), pizza, baked eggs (won't believe how good this is) and the pancake with bacon and maple syrup. Nothing was mediocre.....all nine of our party were more than pleased with our food. Sit at the bar, service is better.

Unique pizzas that amaze and drinks to match!

By Dana C |

While I enjoy the really inventive pizzas, I love the atmosphere. This is a warm restaurant that could be my favorite hangout, if only I lived in San Antonio.

Unfriendly, poor customer service and atmosphere

By LifeisBeautiful1626 |

The pizza menu is confusing. We had to ask a lot of questions, their build your own was very oddly priced too. Toppings for small pizza is different than the price for toppings for the large. Nonetheless, we ordered one of their specialty pizzas..When it was brought to our table, we all noticed it was nothing near how the waitress described, The waitress stared at it then said she thought we were made the wrong pizza. We waited to hear a resolution from her but she just walked away..We saw her go over to tell her manager and we kind of waited... for him to come over and maybe offer to make us the correct version, Nope. he gave us a weird glare and he did not approach our table whatsoever. To say the least, customer service is this joint is horrible. On top of that, its got a VERY negative weird unfriendly vibe! All of us felt uncomfortable just being there. we did not call any attention to ourselves, just ate the pizza we did not expect and became anxious to finish and leave. The manager was staring at the guests from the bar area, not smiling, seemed overall unhappy about being there. We paid and left. None of us will ever go back.. This place is weird and a bit grungy.. It's clear they have their "regulars" that come in and hang out and get all the attention and take over the place. its like everyone else is unwelcome. We will never go back.

Great Pizza

By Jill V |

Great pizza, lots of unique options. Small and dark, very limited seating. Good service, great happy hour. Limited parking. We went on a Monday night loved the pizza. Nice little trendy spot if your looking for something different.

Gem in Monte Vista

By DonDon7 |

Really enjoyed a spectacular lunch with friends at this restaurant in the heart of Monte Vista. The prices are extremely competitive and the wait staff were very attentive for our early lunch crowd (we were so early that our waitress was not aware of the soup of the day yet). We elected to split the lunch special sharing a large pizza (anchovy and arugula) and the kale salad with with pumpkin seeds and grapes. Really delicious and we still had enough left to ask for a "to go" box. They have an extensive wine and beer selection as well. This restaurant is a "keeper" and will be in business for years to come. Great service, prices and yummy food makes this place a winner.

Best brunch in San Antonio

By RRay |

Barbaro is our favorite Sunday brunch hangout in San Antonio. Awesome & diverse brunch menu with great Bloody Mary's. Pizzas are unique and very tasty!

Best option for late night

By Ruben M |

Though food is not something to write home about and staff is just friendly but not extremely attentive, this is surely the best place to have a decent late dinner in San Antonio. Speciality Pizzas are original and good. Wine list is limited but existant at least. Luckily if it's beer you are craving the options are much better Parking may be an issue, however neighborhood seems safe and you can leave the car around and walk if needed Regards

Great Pizza

By Peter B |

During our stay in Monte Vista we visited three times. 1st for a drink, back that evening get for dinner and again a week later for lunch. Each occasion had a different crowd and equally different feel. The place is very good with quality wines by the glass and the pizzas are very fresh and clean. Great value for money especially lunchtime specials.

delicious pizza- great drinks!!!

By needstogo |

what a great place to go unwind! make reservations or it'll be hard to get in. The pizza and salads are out of this world...may be the very best pizza in town. The bar is awesome as well. Great place for friends.

Best pesto pizza ever!

By Sandra B |

This place has a very hipster vibe, it was kind of noisy and they have some of the most interesting drink combinations I have ever seen. That being said, I absolutely love this place. They have the best pesto pizza I have ever had! My husband got the mozz pizza with ham and hot sauce, it was not my favorite but my hubby loved it. The staff were all very nice, we got to talking with the bar tender and he was very helpful. If we lived in San Antonio I would be absolutely be regular!

Great pizza

Amazing pizza & drinks!!! Neapolitan desert was da bomb! The waitress were helpful in making sure they answered all questions...

Used to come here, not any more

By SuperTraveler2014 |

Used to come to Barbaro and the food was great. Visited it again and was sorely disappointed. The beer is still good but the food was terrible. The pizza was burnt, oily and covered in way too much cheese, it actually made us feel rather sick. Sadly will not be visiting again - sorry Barbaro.

Pick Y our Superlative

By OmniEpicurean |

The food was fresh and so was the conversation of friends over rounds or craft beers, pizza pies, and even a can or sardines that one of our group had as an appetizer. Yes, a can of sardines served with lemon wedges and crackers. Just in case this diner decides to leave a review, I won't opine further. Our waitress, Amanda, was cute as a pixie with service that kept up with our lively pace of consumption (mostly of beer). Great personality and the ability to connect with the customer. Catch her now folks as she is only there for a couple more weeks. A forgotten (by me) new feature of Barbaro had me ordering a cold-as-I-like-it, 32 oz. schooner of brown ale. That was just the wind in my sails needed to finish off a very good pizza that was half eaten by one of our party as he had scarfed my pizza on arrival by mistake instead of his own that was delivered to me some minutes later out of the kitchen. Being the good guy that he is, he replaced the slices that he had eaten with two of the fresh ones. I actually liked his mushroom pizza a little better for the flavor than my Benton though both were good and I got to try two different pizzas as a result. No complaints there. Once again the easy, comfortable ambiance of the place made for a most enjoyable lunch with good buds, good food, great service, and some very good craft brews. [Pick the superlative phrase from the appropriate commercial and insert here such as: "It don't get any better than this", or maybe, "Priceless!"]

Overrated

By guitarspeak |

Id heard about this place for awhile. That it was a good italian and pizza place. the pizzas not bad but its way more expensive that you think it'll be. Plus they seat you alley style so you'll be right next to others. some like that I guess. I don't. dark and overrated.

Great food, lousy service, too loud music

By dihi24 |

This place was hopping. We were excited to try the food, but that waned after being seated and having to wait more than 10 minutes for someone to give us the time of day. Our scantily clad, rough looking waitress with tattoos all over and a nose ring barely greeted us and just asked what we wanted. The fried mozzarella was delicious and fresh. We split a pizza and spaghetti with meatballs. Both were yummy. At no point were we asked how our food was or if we needed anything else. We had to flag our server down a couple of times and couldn't have gotten out any faster if we tried. The atmosphere is loud lounge lizardish. It feels dirty and the music is so loud, don't expect to have any kind of conversation. Really disappointing experience.

Friggin fantastic

By RCTALLEY |

Whether it's happy hour or a muffaletta pizza this hidden gem on McCullough is a fun and vibrant place to relax with friends, enjoy specialty pizzas and great cocktails and/or special Texas beers.

Amazingly good breakfast

By DAEsmae |

We ate here for Saturday morning breakfast and it was stellar. Good service, great food. The Parmesan biscuits with butter were super, exceeded only by the chicken and donut holes. Best chicken I have had in years!!! Truly superior, I almost went back for more the next day. Wish I could have tried more things from the menu but the portion sizes are generous. Good coffee as well.

Great neighborhood place

By Chas F |

Travel north from all the riverwalk tourists and land here in an ecletic historic residential district where this place gives locals a place to hang. And the perfect pizza crust makes it worth seeking out. Thoughtful selection of world wines at good prices. The grilled asparagus with oil oil drizzle was the best i've devoured. Avoid the sunchoke unless you liked your mother's breadcrumby cassetoles. Pizzas was very good!

Great Space, Great Bar, Good Pizza (will hopefully be Great soon)

By Frank |

The new Barbaro restaurant in a space that was formerly occupied by a Coffee Shop, and before that an art Gallery did not disappoint. I was amazed at the look and feel of the place. Its quite a pretty and comfortable restaurant. Updated lighting, and attractive Bar and efficient and friendly service are likely a key reason why the space appears to be jam packed each time I pass it. It was with high hopes that we visited recently, and overall were not disappointed; although the place didnt hit on all marks. We loved the look and feel of the space. Chosing to sit at the bar, we enjoyed a couple of well made cocktails, although I do hope that they consider adding Absinthe to their alcohol selection. My date and I disagreed on the Pizzas. She loved hers; one of the house specials, I liked mine well enough but was disappointed primarily on two fronts. Although we both ordered individual Pizza's in order to try a variety of offerings, I thought the pies themselves were tiny! (the individual Pizza would be considered smaller than 2 slices on a more typical pie elsewhere). I also was disappointed that the ingredients on my pie (a simple Mushroom and Sausage) were scarce. The overall flavor was good to very good; but please consider not being quite as skimpy on the ingredients. We will be back, in part due to the appeal of the space itself and in part due to the bar and friendly staff. The Pizza; I have high hopes for and will give it another shot.

Excellent Brunch!

By Sarah L |

Best kept secret for San Antonio brunch. Amazing food with short wait times. We tried the skillet pancake with syrup & bacon and egg souffle. Good portions and fresh flavors. We also loved the atmosphere.

Becoming a local hangout

By 09erDiner |

Becoming a "local hangout" means it's getting it right most of the time and when it doesn't either the service or the food makes up for the deficiency. I've been here 3 times now and twice on Sundays and would say the service has been pretty good if not always spot on. The Sunday brunch is a good menu and the skillet molasses pancake is awesome. On the downside I will say the kitchen and bar can be too slow at times and I wish their wine and drink prices were lower. Definitely worth a try for pizza during the week.

San Antonio Hidden Gem

By Lori A |

Visited Barbaro's for brunch. Great food, service was exceptional, quaint atmosphere. A brunch menu where everything sounded good - even for my teenaged children. Pastry selection, however, was weak. Not crowded.

Just ok

By lacymo |

Pizza toppings were good but crust just ok, very crunchy if you like that. We got 1/2 & 1/2 pizza then were charged fully for both toppings, they reluctantly took it off the bill after we asked. Neat place/ambiance but we won’t be rushing back.

Will be back for the sunchoke

By ecjammies |

I wanted to not like it because our waitress came across as a little snotty, but the food was delicious and eventually the waitress warmed up. Guess she might have been just busy. Loved the sunchoke (never had that before) and the cauliflower au gratin. My husband really liked the pizza. Cozy atmosphere. Didn't mind the food taking so long but the service could have been better.

All they keep saying is CAN'T

By Robert B |

I want the pepperoni pizza with no onions- response- you can't. I want the bacon pizza can you add peppers- response- you can't. They let you order a special pizza from a list of ingredients. I want to order a pizza with x,y,z and can you add bacon (which they clearly have as its an ingredient on a pizza they have)- response- you can't. Guess what? I CAN write about a bad experience on Tripadvisor and warn others.

Gas station food

By Rose P |

Cool bar/gas station food - they charged me $47 for eggplant parmesan that looked like a completely different dish from the picture on their website and the pizza was on par with a $5 frozen pizza :/

Hipster bar with bar food.

By TravelingSouthTexan |

It’s confused if it wants to be a restaurant and serve quality food, or a bar. It should stick with bar and offer bar food. I had the eggplant Parmesan and it was 4 patty-like giant thick slices of eggplant with a side of thick brioche bread. That’s it. For $14. And it wasn’t even done well. For heaven sakes give me some pasta or mashed potatoes or something. But again. They are confused with how they can serve bar food but restaurant quality. Newsflash. You can’t. Skip it unless you are Gen Z looking for a hipster bar.

Best pizza in town

By Aunttabby |

I love their thin crust authentic Italian pizza. They have very upscale toppings, from big chunks of sausage to kalamata olives. Do get the extra cheese topping as the regular is not very cheesy. They have great salads, my favorite is the arugula which has just enough dressing and extras to make it a standout. For appetizers, the pizza balls are tasty but some other kind of balls we ordered were not that flavorful. For dessert do try the donuts which come in balls with a butterscotch sauce, yum! They have lots of great beer and if you are unsure which beer or wine to choose, the bartender will give you samples so you end up with something you like.

Great Pizza and Driinks

By LJRoadWarrior |

The pizza is awesome. This is actually a great place for date night. The bartenders do a great job offering up new and exciting drinks and the atmosphere is cozy but very inviting. I wish the appetizers were a big bigger for the price but, in several visits, we have yet to find something we don't like in the taste department.

Simple and chic

By Donald H |

This is the new place in the neighborhood that draws you in for food and drink. Because of its small size one should plann accordingly. We sat at the bar rather than join the line waiting for tables. It is a limited food menu based on their delicious pizzas. But, martinis of all types constantly flowed from the bar. Everyone seemed happy to be there. The wine was fine and complemented our simple pizza with mushrooms. We will go back but pick a time when we can get a table.

Fantastic Brunch with Breakfast Pizza and Skillet Pancakes

By Mith |

Try the Breakfast Pizza and the Skillet Pancakes. They were just we needed after a 10 mile hike. They do great cocktails too, especially the bloody mary.

Best Happy Hour in the City

By Matthew S |

I go to Barbaro frequently for happy hour and the drinks are spectacular. I mention happy hour because the drink prices are insanely cheap for what you're getting. Top class cocktails for $5, $3 draft beer, and I'm not talking about domestic lagers, their happy hour red wine is Evening Land Pinot Noir... Nuts. Their pizzas are excellent and experimental. The place is a trendy upscale bar and they do it very well.

Decor great, Service great, Pizzas... OK

By jerruu |

The interior decor is really enjoyable: muted lighting, high ceilings, clean, open, and quirky decorations. The service is great: friendly but not intrusive, helpful, and quick. The pizzas taste pretty good, but the topping prices are a bit high, in my humble opinion. For example, it's $2 or $3 (I forget which) to add pineapple, but they literally put only *one* single cube of pineapple per slice of pizza. I'm not usually one who wants my meal "supersized", but that seems a bit overpriced given the cost of a can of pineapple cubes at HEB... Overall, it is a great experience. I am glad I went, and I am sure I will want to go again.

Nice location, good food, bad time management

By BoardingPass470907 |

Positive: - nice, cosy location - very tasty food/ drinks Negative: - had to wait about 75 minutes for a pizza (at a time (9:30 pm) hardly any other person ordered something to eat). That is much too long.

Great neighborhood restaurant

By olenodak |

Our party of three tried this restaurant for the first time. We had the chopped salad, cauliflower salad and a pizza along wiht draft beers. All were excellent. The pizza crust was done to perfection. The atmosphere was warm and inviting.

Excellent bistro

By Ric H |

Neat little bistro just outside downtown. Quick Uber ride from the river walk. Excellent food, tapas etc, their arancinis are out of this world. Many different wines and mixed spirits. Staff is super friendly and knowledgeable. One bartender in particular was on it, too man, you can tell he loves his job and loves the service industry. A most to visit, not far from the Riverwalk. Food is reasonably priced.

Exceptionally Slow Service

By Thomas N |

The pizza and salads here are great, but ONLY sit at the bar! Two waitresses and 60 customers in the dining room is a recipe for disaster. Although they only have one bartender and many "craft" cocktails, the service at the bar is much better.

Great Food

By Michele A |

This place has great pizza and calzones. They have a great beer selection. I had a beer with the name Betty in it. It was delicious.

Good pizzas and prices

By astaplet82 |

Went with my wife's brother, his wife, and their 2 kids. The place probably wasn't kid friendly - at least not 2-year-old friendly. Staff was great, but the other patrons weren't too amused by the distractions they caused from time to time. A hip crowd with the "don't have kids or hire a babysitter" mantra. But again, the staff was great, and the pizzas we tried were really good and unique.

Appalling service and average food.

By Sarah B |

We were a party of six who came in on a busy Friday evening, so sat at one of the benches out the front. We ordered a salad to start, which came quickly and was delicious, and five pizzas. We waited for about thirty minutes before we started wondering where our main courses were - the couple at the table behind us had come in after us but received theirs, although we think the woman knew the chef, as he came out and said hello to her. We went in to enquire about the wait and were told that the pizzas were being cooked and were coming, so we continued to wait. During this time the couple behind us had some sort of problem with their food - possibly a wait issue too - as a server came out and gave them a long apology and promised he would “sort everything out” for them. Our food finally came out after about an hour, one of the pizzas was overdone - we should’ve sent it back immediately, but we were so hungry by this time that we just wanted to eat. The pizza was okay, nothing special in my opinion. During this time, the same server came out and gave the same apology speech to the table behind us for the second time…either they were really sorry about that particular table, or he’d been meant for us! The plates weren’t cleared and the bill was brought out, which included everything and had gratuity added. One of us went inside to have the service taken off, and again voiced our upset at not the service itself, but the speed and lack of response to our issues. He was told that the staff had done everything “to company policy” and asked if he would like to speak to the owner, who would say the same thing. He declined on account of the fact that they clearly couldn’t care less, so he assumed the owner wouldn’t either. Such a shame, because apparently the happy hour here is great, and the food would be worth it if it came in a timely manner, or was accompanied with good customer care and a genuine apology when things went wrong. I wouldn’t recommend or go back, except maybe just for drinks.

Love this place

By San Antonio member |

This is one of the places we eat at most often as it is walking distance from our house. Food is outstanding. Great pizzas - try some of their creative suggestions. The toasts and salads are also really good and different. Craft beer selection makes my husband happy and a decent wine list. Only negatives - service is good not great and they could use nicer wine glasses and cutlery. But the food really shines.

Bottom notch service/Needs major improvement

By SA Foodie 210 |

Wife and I stopped in for a late dinner on Sunday 6/30/19 around 10pm. It took roughly 10 minutes before we were greeted by our waitress. The waitress that helped us was the same one we had on our last visit and her service was absolutely TERRIBLE. I figured we would give it another try since Barbaro is such a charming restaurant. On this visit, she seemed bothered by us and it appeared she was just there to be a body-just going through the motions. There are ways to make more money as a server and she executed NONE of them. The food took 36 minutes to get to the table from the time we ordered it. Not once did she let us know that out food would be out shortly. Apparently that takes too much effort. The servers at most restaurants are your front line soldiers and are a representation of your business. I recommend this server do some advanced training or get the heck out of dodge. She was rewarded with a .32 cent tip for her crappy service and that's about .31 cents too much. I'm not sure if we'll return to Barbaro based on our last 2 visits and I'm not sure we'll recommend it to anyone.

Great pizza!

By Arodzull |

Small, cozy restaurant with delicious pizza and great drinks! The service was great with very friendly staff. Good recomendations for drinks from waitress.

Awesome lunch

By JANNETTE E |

This restaurant was recommended by a friend and we were not disappointed. Our server Brice was well versed on the type of beers that they have on draft which is actually a pretty good selection. I had the smoked gouda pizza, it was amazing. my husband had a goat cheese, arugula, and mushroom Pizza which he really enjoyed . their lunch menu was limited but more than one needed for that time of day, looking forward to trying dinner.

WORST SERVICE AND ATTITUDE EVER!

By Soutpaw |

WORST SERVICE EVER! The female bartender was rude, uninterested and obviously disturbed when asked about the menu. Stay away!! This is the first negative review i have ever wriiten. I was compelled due to the total lack of understanding who pays HER (bartender) paycheck. Your evening and hard earned money is better spent at Bombay Bicycle Club. Superior servive and food at Bombay Bicycle Club.

Not your average pizza

By Jane E |

Our local hosts took us to this wonderful little gem. It is in an old building that has been restored in that industrial chic vibe that is so popular now. There are many pizzas to chose from, all very tasty. They also have an excellent choice of salads and sides to go with them. I recommend the kale salad and or the grilled vegetables. We ordered several and shared them. We were there for the Happy Hour all night special so drinks were cheap and they have quite a variety of unique cocktails. This is off the beaten path for tourists, but it was packed with locals who know good food. Search this one out for an excellent meal.

Fun spot outside of Downtown

By E S |

If you are visiting San Antonio, particularly if you are near downtown, this MonteVista locals' spot is a great place for a casual meal, a drink, a break. The food is delicious, lots of local brew and very laid back atmosphere. Perfect after a hard day at work or a night out with a great friend.

The pizza knocked our socks off!!

By John B |

Super fresh ingredients, thin crispy crust,, absolutely delicious. Nice $3 wine during happy hour. Good craft beer selection. Cool vibe too. Highly recommend this place.

Great Pizza, Service Could be Improved

By MeghanAnnRose |

The pizza here was really great. I will definitely go back. The one complaint I had was our waitress(es)--it was confusing who was even assigned to us--were too quick to leave our table after someone made an order. With a large group, its key not to run off immediately as someone else might need something.

Good pizza, terrible service.

By Dominic23 |

I wanted to love this place. I really wanted to. I’ve been there three times now and every time I’ve been let down. What happened to service with a smile? What happened to being nice to the customer? The pizza and drinks were pretty good but the staff, especially the female bartender, was rude, abrasive, and not once asked how we were or even asked if we needed anything. Some of them (not all) act as if they’re doing you the favor of serving you. It’s sad because I’m sure the ownership has worked hard to make this place succeed. I won’t be going back and I’m sure most of the staff couldn’t care less.

Pig in lipstick

By CJW |

Attempt at recreating a 'hipster' Williamsburg/East London 'hangout' in San Antonio. Succeeds on all levels if you have a penchant for morose, sullen ambiance and distinctly average overpriced food. Barbaro may well be a cool place to be seen, but for those of a similar disposition to myself who pay homage to great food and attentive service over pretentious culinary narcissism I suggest you avoid. Bearded barman - check, quirky waitress - check, exposed ceilings - check, communal table - check, weird ornaments - check, deconstructed over complicated menu in terms of ingredients - check, malnourished menu in terms of variety of content/choice - check. What makes this restaurant even more of a hipster restaurant is that it probably doesn't think it's a hipster restaurant which makes it even more so one of the aforementioned restaurants - check.

Neat vibe

By TexasPaGal |

We really liked the vibe of this place. The food was good but we thought it was a bit overpriced and the drinks were definitely expensive. They do have a 1/2 off Happy Hour from 3-6 on some drinks so that is likely when we will go next time and a $10 lunch special, which would be worth it. It is next to a great cookie spot:) Lily's Cookies. We enjoyed seeing that part of San Antonio as it is a very different and older neighborhood with lots of character. Glad we went.

Unusual Atmosphere

By PurplePaloma |

Barbaro is not typical of San Antonio, but a very unusual place on a corner of McCullough. It used to be a laundry, then an antique shop, etc. I like the atmosphere. It is rather dark and mysterious. They have a lot of us usual things to drink. The thin crust pizza was very good. Salad was good, but expensive for what it is. I will go back because it is 'algo differente', something a little bit different.

Great Pizza!

By Jorge R |

Good appetizers and the clam pizza was great!! I love the thin crust and fresh ingredients. Good wine selection and place was very nice

Yummy

By skgcdl |

The drinks with house soda were yummy. The pizza , salads , potatoe bacon soup were all good. Eclectic place

Really good pizza and salads

By Dave D |

First time visit. Walked in, it was dark and uninviting. But really enjoyed the place when seated. Service was nice and food was really good. We had salad (chopped) and pizza...great. If you like thin crust, this is the place.

Poor Service

By eaobien |

We ordered the Fried Mozerella, the olives and peppers, and a small Clam pizza. All of the food was wonderful (although the olives could have been much better, in my opinion). The only issue is that we specifically ordered a small pizza, and the server brought us a large. We ended up being charged 50+ dollars for an incorrect order. Would recommend for the food, but not for the service.

What a hidden gem!!!

By DOMINARJVC |

Passed this place 100 times as its in my route to work and had no idea what it was...this is top on my radar now!! Amazing hand crafted cocktails that are better than any I have seen in this town. I had three starters...the heirloom tomato, avocado, salsa verde with bacon...omg...watercress salad with lemon vin and goat cheese...so perfectly balanced and then the lamb sausage, crispy fried with smoked olive oil...spot on! Never even got to the pizza which they are apparently known for. Put this on your "off the beaten path" destinations...great craft beer selection too...very impressed...can you tell?

A MUST for Piza fans!

By Dominic23 |

Truly a great surprise! Barbaro is a great looking place with great food, period. The minestrone soup is some of the best, if not the best I've ever had. The Italian Sausage pizza was made just right and the crust was excellent. My business partner had the ham pizza which was also amazing. Of course, the service was on-point. I highly recommend this place!

Who says you CAN'T get good pizza in Texas?!

By Gus_Sanchez |

As recent Connecticut transplants we were warned that neither pizza nor Chinese food would be as good out here in south central Texas. Well, I'm happy to tell you that's not true (at least not for the pizza part - Chinese food review coming soon...ish)! I concur with many of the previous reviews: Cool interior (if even a bit hipster-ish), attentive (but not necessarily engaging/friendly - in our case - not that it took away from the experience) staff, great cocktails (Negronis for us) and super delicious food! My wife and I shared the broccoli/bacon/honey-mustard/Parmesan salad which was heavenly. We ordered a custom pizza with caramelized onions, sweet peppers and mushroom. Again, delish! - Now, the only thing that had me teetering between a 4 and 5 star rating was price. With tip, our dinner came to $60. That's pretty much NY/CT-type prices and part of the reason for coming here was that the cost of living was supposedly lower. So, a little disappointed in that and something you can keep in mind, but the experience/food was worth it. You will not be disappointed.

Dissappointed

By PS3 |

The first time we went here I really liked it. We went in for an early dinner. The atmosphere was great. The cocktails were generous and the pizza was really good. Our server was sweet and attentive. Today we decided to go in the middle of the afternoon. They were still serving a brunch menu until 3 which we arrived 15 minutes shy of. The server handed us a brunch menu which included pizza with all the ingredients - just not a list of their signature pizza's. My wife told the server she really liked a certain signature pizza she had last time (she found the name of it on the google) and asked if she could have that one. The server said dryly, "Uh,, that's not available". Now mind you, brunch ends in 5 minutes by this time. My wife ended up ordering a build your own pizza as close to the ingredients as the one she had wanted. My thinking is - If a repeat customer comes in and orders something by name, you go back in the kitchen and make it. You know how. You've got all the ingredients. Why do you have a popular restaurant for any other reason than to make it more popular. You should do your best to give your customers exactly what they want and do it with an attitude that you're delighted for opportunity to do so. Would it have been so tough to do? The brunch menu is about to be pulled, and replaced with the regular one. What IS the problem? We didn't complain, we complied but I was not impressed. Twenty minutes later the server brings out one pizza and tells my wife that hers was put too far in the back of the oven and was burned so we'd have to wait a little longer for hers. I said, "so that pizza will be free right?" The waitress snickered. I said, "I'm serious". When she brought the bill she had charged us for two cheese pizzas -no topping charges. Still not impressed. As many restaurants as I see closing their doors for good everyday you would think owners and managers would do everything in their power to make sure the customer has a great experience. Especially around Barbaro there are just too many other places to go and have a better experience.

$10 pizzas on Mondays

By Hsphoser36 |

They have happy hour each night that ends at 6 but they also have a special for $10 pizzas on Monday nights. We tried two of them, whatever is he second and third listed on the menu. One of them was like a carbonara and the other some sort of a spicy Pizza. Both were pretty good with thin crust. The service was good and the deal was better. If I were a Local I would consider returning on this.

Unprofessional Management and Bad Service

By Jay S |

DO NOT EAT HERE Hour and a half wait for a pizza when no one is in the restaurant. We were told by Steven, the manager, that the "place was full and everyone is waiting an hour" when the restaurant was half empty. Lol. Seriously? Contradict the customer? Steven clearly lied to our faces and was very rude, condescending and unprofessional. No one over the age of 25 works here, Therefore, all you witness is unprofessionalism and favoritism. We witnessed several people getting served their food before we did after waiting an hour and half. This place only serves their friends, family or regulars before anyone else. This is clearly discrimination. **** we have had issues with this place in the past in regards to service and food quality and stayed away for over a year. We decided to give this place another try again today and it was a BIG FLOP again. DO NOT EAT HERE

Hipster, at a price

By Bruce56k |

We enjoyed a concert in downtown San Antonio and looked for a nearby pizza joint; Barbaro came up in the search results. Unusual toppings for pizza with slightly higher prices than other places. We did order the Crispy Mozzarella as an appetizer; what a letdown. Three mozzarella balls about the size a golf balls for $10. The "large" Carbonara pizza is about 14 inches, and a very thin/dry crust for $18. We forewent the dessert because it seemed over-priced. The place was relatively crowded, with mostly 30-somethings drinking wine and beer the entire time we were there. The short tables seem to be for food and the taller tables for 30-somethings to drink and holler - and holler. It was quite noisy, and hard to hear your own conversation with all the loud laughter. Seemed more like a bar, with food on the side, than the pizza joint we were looking for. Of the three of us, no one felt like we would return.

Fabulous place!

What a great repurposing of a historic building. The rustic environs added a unique quality to the meal. I enjoyed the pesto cheese salad immensely! I also tried the gorgonzola salad and pizza. Excellent quality. I will be back very soon!

Neighborhood hidden Gem

By sel6090 |

Shhhhh, my family & I tried this Neighborhood pizza restaurant for the first time and really loved everything. The restaurant is in a historic building and just done wonderfully. Nice wood warm interior with a very romantic low lighting dining room. The pizza crust was sublime, thin, chewy and difficult to describe, but trust me, you must experience it... interesting pizza topping combinations that JUST WORK! The large pizza is just about right for two people. We had the broccoli small plate as an appetizer and wow, simple but delicious and healthy, I want the recipe! We shared a neopolitan for dessert that was shockingly excellent. Service was friendly and efficient. I want to come back for drinks at the cool bar. Park along neighborhood streets and walk, it's safe & worth it. They do take reservations. Great date night restaurant with very fair prices. Highly recommended!

Unique cocktails

Enjoyed the atmosphere and the food was great! The three of us all tried a different specialty drink. Definitely unique cocktails!

Beautiful Evening, Great Pizza

By TeddyDean |

We sat outside this evening and it was delightful. The IPA's were tasty, the servers were efficient, and the pizzas were delicious (vegetarian and carbonera). An understated, but quality experience!

Wonderful neighborhood place

By San Antonio member |

We love the food here. Try their special pizzas. I never would have thought a hot sauce cilantro pizza would work - but it does. Only downside is service which is okay but not outstanding. They could be a bit friendlier. We don't eat out that often, but this neighborhood gem is on our regular rotation.

Inventive and interesting menu

By Margaret W |

Considering it's a pizza place this restaurant delivers a much more interesting and varied menu than most. The venue is lovely with a spacious modern, quirky atmosphere. It's old style with a contemporary twist, we liked the bar and it was lit for a romantic evening. I would say we were a tad cramped in one of the booths but that was preferable to sitting at the high tables on high stools. Had we wanted to just have snacks and cocktails I'd say the bar looked very comfortable with plenty of stools. One other caveat on ordering food, it came when the kitchen delivered which meant our pre snacks, starter and then my main all arrived almost immediately; my husband's pizza came later. I would far prefer to have things arrive in the right order, if we visit again ww'll only order one thing at a time. We're staying in an Airbnb and our host recommended this place which is just around the corner. I would say it's off the beaten track but well worth seeking out because it really was exceptionally good food and, as I said, so much more interesting than you'd expect from a bar serving pizza.

Relaxed local pizza and wine

By KundaNomad |

I passed this place many times on my way home from my office and since it says Pizza I did not bother stopping. Luckily my curiosity got the best of me and I stopped one evening to check it out. I was pleasantly surprised: it has a very pleasant and welcoming atmosphere, inviting for a drink at the bar with friends or for a meal at one of the tables or booths. We ordered a meatloaf and a pizza with a glass of wine. The perfect end to a buddy day. We have gone there now a few times, after work, after the symphony and even for lunch. The food is good and the pizzas are A rated. The booths could use some work and they could use at least one more waiter in the evenings to improve the demeanor and time to attend of the current ones. But all in all this place is a great find.

casual,relaxed spot north of downtown

By dkmkakektk |

This small and casual eatery is a great spot for a quick bite and glass of wine. Located near Trinity University and the Monte Vista historic district the fare is limited but good.Wine list is interesting and worth a look.

Must experience if your from out of town!!!!

By Wander577407 |

We were in San Antonio for a couple of days with the family. We decided to try this place because we wanted pizza. It was by far the best decision we made. The place dose that have much parking but it is worthwhile. The service was excellent. And pizza was amazing we had a clam pizza (must try). We also had the Neapolitan ice cream dessert OMG IT WAS SOO GOOD. Over all of you want to experience something different you should definitely try it. Oh and the $$$ is affordable.

Classic unassuming place - good food and athmosphere

By Bertha_SAT |

Great athmosphere - old-remodeled building, high ceilings, low light. Went there on Monday - pizza special. It was great. They have home brewed beer. Service was good and friendly and reasonably priced.

Not quite sure what all the fuss is about

By inncpsanantonio |

We sat at the bar for a quick bite to eat one evening and decided to try the pizza that people have raved about. The pizza was pretty good but the wait for the pizza was well over an hour. As we were leaving to walk home, we saw that they only had one guy doing pizzas out of one oven. That made the wait more explainable since we must have seen 6-8 pizzas being delivered to other guests before ours. Yes, popular pizza but something should be done about their method of preparation and delivery.

Great Place!

By Austin_Baja |

Tried Barbaro the other night based on a "suggestion". Very glad we did. Great little restaurant/bar. The vibe is very cool and feels good. Great bar, where we had drinks and ate dinner. Bartender Steve was awesome and he is the reason we will be back, best drinks snd service. Great pizza, great drinks, great service and a great atmosphere!

No recommendation!

By Thomas D |

I ordered a pizza and garlic knots with Uber eats. As the food arrived it was cold! And the so called sicillian pizza had nothing to do with a pizza. I received a greasy dough with cheese, onions and mushrooms on it. I never would reorder!

Awful customer service

By aaron |

This place is a joke. Second time our order for takeout wasn’t fulfilled. After waiting 45 min and receiving a confirmation text and email that the order was received we were told that “somehow the order wasn’t printed and it would be another 45 min”. What they should have done is rushed the order though. Clearly the management hasn’t trained their staff.

Great neighborhood hang out

By Ticorsa |

Located in the Monte Vista area this is a great neighborhood hangout. Limited menu but nice atmosphere and bar, with a more than acceptable wine list. The later in the evening the more crowded. You never know who will be dropping in. Worth a visit!

Creative pizzas, cocktails, local beer on-tap

By Chris Jay |

My wife and I walked to Barbaro from our Airbnb room nearby, just because it looked promising. Barbaro serves creative, slightly upscale pizzas, salads and small plates and manages to do so without feeling too precious or pretentious. As a visitor to the area, I was looking for a selection of local beer on tap, and they had about nine brews from Austin and San Antonio. My wife and I both ate and drank (we had three drinks apiece - we were walking, and it was our last night in town) for $65. We experienced really great service, as well. I'll definitely return on our next visit to San Antonio.

Great Place for Pizza & Beer

By MobileResident |

This neighborhood restaurant is off the beaten path for most tourists. My wife and I ate dinner here earlier this month. Everyone who worked here seemed happy to care for us even though we weren't "locals". They had an extensive selection of beers. The thin crust pizza was well prepared and tasty. The parking lot is fairly small but it looked like one could park on the streets nearby. Barbaro is a great option if you want to have pizza & beer in an inviting neighborhood setting.

Delicious, and outstanding service

By arhie |

The food and creative cocktail menu are a little unusual and very, very good. Our server knew the menu inside out and gave us outstanding recommendations. Pizzas are thin crust. Reservations are available but were unnecessary at 7:30 on a Saturday night- possibly because the daily (even weekends) happy hour from 3-6pm is so excellent. I will definitely be back!

Rosewater panna cotta & a Benton's bacon pizza

By Johnny H |

Barbaro has a streamlined menu, it is small but that is good thing as every item is well thought out. If your food is outstanding you don't need a huge, cluttered menu. If you are looking for mass produced, stuffed crust, gimmick laden pizza please go elsewhere. If you are looking for something a little different, with great ingredients and cooked with skill by all means get a table at Barbaro. I stopped here for lunch with my wife and our notoriously finicky, toddler and we all loved it. We ordered a small taleggio, hash browns, kale and honey pizza. I will admit to being a little apprehensive of honey on a pizza but, obviously the chef knows what he is doing. Everyhting came together beautifully on this pizza, the creaminess of the taleggio, the crispness of the hash browns and kale were complimented by the hint of sweet provided by the honey. Fantastic! We all enjoyed it, especially my son. We also ordered a large Benton's bacon, carbonara, black pepper and Gran Padano pizza. Wow! Again, these ingredients combined to make the perfect bite, my description couldn't do it justice so, I won't try. If you've never tasted Benton's bacon, stop reading now and go to Barbaro. Two pizzas were plenty for three of us and we had a few slices to take home with us. Save room for espresso and dessert you will regret it if you don't. We ordered the rosewater panna cotta, and two espressos. I am extremely hard to please when it comes to coffee. As a result, I am almost always disappointed by restaurant coffee. If done right it it is the perfect ending to a meal. If done wrong it can mar a meal that was otherwise excellent. When the espresso was served I was delighted to find a nice, golden crema resting on the top, a sign of a well extracted cup. The rosewater panna cotta was nothing short of divine. Seriously, I would come here just for this dessert. I will be back, soon and next time without the kid because the cocktail menu here looks as fantastic as the rest!

Pizza is best in San Antonio

By pigletpuff |

This pizza became my instant favorite and I will definitely go back if only for take out. It reminds me of pizza in Boston's North End. The sauce and crust are delish! But the parking is awful. Be careful entering the parking lot that is adjacent that apparently is only for patrons of the cookie shop, the bottom of my car scraped the pavement which is way too steep. There is a sign inside or perhaps I read it on a paper that cautions late nite patrons to not get too loud in consideration of the neighbors in this mostly residential area called Monte Vista which some consider still prestigious. The servers and greeter are very hospitable and I found the place welcoming and comfortable despite the self-conscious hipster vibe. My server didn't write down my order and my pizza got messed up but I still ate it without complaint and it was very good. In future I will only go for take out based on the poor parking situation and I will probably stick with the plain cheese or cheese and pepperoni.

Looking for pizza and beer in San Antonio? This is the place to be! Awesome atmosphere!

By Chelsea F. |

After tirelessly searching for a place to dine in on the 4th of July away from the RiverWalk, we found this place. BY FAR, some of the best pizza I’ve ever had. We had an amazing server, GREAT drinks/spirits, and the atmosphere was amazing. Dim with candlelights, and 90’s grunge.. what more could I ask for?? TOP NOTCH. Out of all the restaurants we tried on our short trip to San Antonio, this is definitely one of the places to remember and to visit. I can’t wait to get my hands on another Carbonara pizza. (Best one on the menu, trust me!) Also.. try the Eye of The Storm cocktail! 5/5 for sure!

Date night

My husband and i are making more effort on joining our local eateries and were not disappointed at Barbaro! From the friendly greeting, delicious eats, and drinks will bring us back!

Best pizza in stylish digs

By Scott I |

This is probably my favorite pizza place in San Antonio. Not sure what the crust is, but it's nearly as good as the toppings. Wood fired pizzas, interesting and tasty salads, and a great bar (With helpful bartenders), all in a rustic yet refined atmosphere. They also have outdoor seating. I almost gave it 4 stars because the host and wait staff can be less than welcoming, but they make up for it in efficiency. It's a small space and reservations are highly recommended, although they can usually get you in if you're willing to wait.

Great neighborhood hangout

By Ronald W |

Stopped by at 11p (sorry Max's, you lost the late night crowd) and found the local neighborhood vibe to be quite pleasant and enjoyable. The thin crust 3 mushroom pizza was good and the rhubarb mule was very good. The dessert was only ok, but the whole effect is quiet pleasant and enjoyable

Best pizza ever!

By Amy L |

This is the best pizza I have ever had! The crust is a perfect blend of crunchy/chewy. I always choose from the specialty pizzas, as I feel the chefs know what they are doing! The service is exceptional....this is a must try while in San Antonio!!

Check your receipt for parties over 6

By PoompasDucks |

Extremely overpriced (added a $15 extra charge for gluten free pizza) and way too loud to hear yourself think let alone carry on a conversation with the person sitting next to you. The food is ok but nothing to get excited about. As others have mentioned, it seems to be a bar that wants to be a restaurant when it grows up and is mostly for the under 30 crowd. Staff was friendly, courteous and attentive. I would suggest checking your receipt before they run your card though. The place is really dark and in extremely small font so it’s easy to miss is the disclaimer they add gratuity to parties over 6. Even though they added gratuity to our bill, the lighting is so dark all you can see is the larger print on the receipt for the signature and tip line. Needless to say, the server received a HUGE tip.
