Cool spot for tapas style and drinks

By Leslie F |

We barely made it in time for happy hour but enjoyed their seasonal margaritas and tapas plates. My husband had the steak which he said wasn’t his favorite, but we also had the brisket cannelloni which was amazing and a chocolate dessert that was incredible. The ambiance is cool too.

Great Tapas place

By sanleesaenz |

We enjoyed the Tapas we ordered, the shrimp with garlic, the Barlata Paella, and 2 bottles of wine. Others order cocktails which they said were great. Barlata never disappoints!! Our waiter was great, very helpful with suggestions

Outstanding options in food and wine

By James Frinzi |

The wine and cocktail selection is impressive. In terms of tapas we probably tried 8 different options. All very impressive! If you like tapas, and the diversity in dining, this place is great. I also had a cocktail that I think we disgusting, and undrinkable. The waiter took it back, no questions asked, and brought me something much better and enjoyable. They really seemed to be invested in enjoying the experience at Barlata! It was really a fun place to eat, and I look forward to going back! Woo!!!!!!

So very impressed!!

As I've written before, I'm in the restaurant business and have been fortunate to travel through many great cities abroad and here in the states....had all kinds of tapas. I was simply overjoyed to find this gem, from moving our reservation time to letting us know that if we sat at the communal table we would be able to enjoy the happy hour beverages and menu, win win! Blair (sp) was our server and was amazing at assisting with selections and keeping the happy hour clock in our minds...spot on service!!! We enjoyed the duck, pork belly, roasted potatoes, calamari, paella, octopus ceviche style and grilled with fennel and a couple others the sangria wiped from my memory. This will always be on my list of places to return next time up in Austin!!

Bravo Brunch

By Wendy S |

Our first time there, we made reservations for right when they opened, but started as their only customers. We ordered the shrimp and patatas bravas off the tapas side of the menu plus the paella barlata, along with mimosas. Everything was delicious! The mimosas has more bubbly than orange juice and wasn't overly sweet. The shrimp was nicely seasoned and perfectly cooked. The patatas bravas was the highlight of the meal - the aioli was to die for! The paella was very rich, the shellfish was also perfectly cooked. They had free parking up to 3 hours on the side of the restaurant, which was very convenient for that neighborhood. We had great service and will definitely go again!

Best Tapas Ever!

I have been to Barcelona and this takes me right back. Great atmosphere, wonderful food. I promise you will enjoy.

Authentic Spanish Dishes

By JDSoui |

While on business made reservations and was not disappointing. The service was attentive and great ambiance Ordered a series of different tapas - cheese plate, patatas bravas, shrimp and a soup with garbanzo beans and soft-boiled egg. Each did was well seasoned and savory. The meal ended with a pleasant cheese cake that was not the traditional, dense texture. The consistency was more whipped than a thick cake making the dish lighter than expected. Overall a very good place - would go back when in the area.

Just like Spain

By Chach63 |

I get powerful hankerings for Spanish food. Arrozes, Paellas, Salmorejo, gazpacho, pintxos, tapas, tortillas! You can find it all here along with an excellent wine list. Perfectly prepared and delicious. The Jamon Iberico is perfect, the beef short rib canelones are YUMMY. I like the atmosphere, I like the servers and the seaters and bussers. Everyone is knowledgeable and seems happy to see you.

Instant Favorite

My husband and I loved Best New Restaurant on Bravo, so when we saw Barlata on the show we knew we had to go on our next trip to Austin! We absolutely loved Barlata and would be there every day if we lived in Austin! The food is outstanding and according to my husband very authentic! He was in Barcelona for 2 weeks and he was so excited to share this culinary experience with me. He said most of the menu was exactly like what he had in Barcelona. My husband even said, "I feel like I'm back in Spain." He was also thrilled they had the "official beer of Barcelona FC" on tap. We had the cheese plate, which of course, had traditional Spanish cheese, ceviche, croquetas of jamon, and calamares. The only unfortunate part was that we ate so many small plates that there was no room for their famous paella. Next time we will definitely try at least one of the paella. We would definitely order all of those dishes again! Everything was cooked perfectly and you can tell everything is made with great care and respect for the traditional Spanish tapas plates. The service was outstanding! We were even able to meet the owner's wife, who was on the show. We told her we came because of the show and she thanked us several times and said the show was a great opportunity for them. She was at the front cleaning off menus when we met her, which show how much they both care about the restaurant. Her husband was back in the kitchen, which was so refreshing to see the owner in the kitchen cooking with the staff. Our server made excellent recommendations and there was always someone clearing plates and re-filling water. We can't wait to return to Austin and this amazing restaurant! Thank you, Barlata!

Fun Flavors

By Strategy |

We were headed over to catch some live music nearby, and decided to try this spot. Rather delicious (they even had a hamachi selection, which surprised me inTX for a non-sushi spot). I definitely recommend the rib infused paella...might sound like you should get something more “authentic,” but this was the hit of the evening.

Amateur Night or Losing Its Mojo?

By Wmhtx |

I really like this restaurant: the food is varied and tasty, the menu interesting, and the room is comfortable. The service has always been a little uneven. Last night, we had unexpectedly bad service--everything was "good" in our waiter's book, but time lags, lack of follow up, forgotten items, total lack of coordination and some absolutely goofy communications. It all started with the water- we asked for Pelligrino, but alas, only flavored versions were available; no other sparkling water. But, the waiter said they had "Vichy" water, which was more authentically Spanish anyway. (Huh? I didn't ask him about WWII, when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor). Took more than ten minutes to get the waiter's attention to ask where our bar spigot seltzer was-- oh, the bar was backed up. OK. Place wasn't that busy, but maybe they were understaffed. A few manager types chatting to each other at the front desk- they weren't stressed. Everything's good, right? The actual server/runners from the kitchen were great- clean plates, Mr. Waiter?- oh, yeah, be right back with those- never came. Follow up drink orders. Eventually. Got. To the table. The waiter wanted to know how everything was as we ordered dessert. I told him the food was great, but the service very uneven, didn't know if it was his fault, or other factors. All good as far as he was concerned, though the service was so embarrassingly bad it was funny. I didn't even bother to talk to management this time-- My sense- the people who know how to run a restaurant were simply absent that night. And a happy go lucky, somewhat clueless waiter isn't going to improve things. Shape up. We'll give you another try, but it's not worth the trouble except for the amusement value, and that's at your expense.

Definitely worth a visit

By JWRAustin_TX |

We had Sunday brunch, which starts at 11, ordering two tortillas and a tapa to share. The lamb pinchos moruños were very flavorful, and the tortillas OK. My husband had a glass of Garnacha, which he said was quite good. The crema catalana for dessert had the right caramel crust, a bit less decadent than I remember, but it ended the meal nicely. The restaurant has a very attractive modern interior, quite a bit of parking and the wait staff is excellent--knowledgeable and friendly.

Great small plates and accessible

By arodnick |

We had a large group eat here twice, and they were very accommodating, and the food was good. lots of small plates and yummy things to try. Spanish style tapas and paellas, mostly.

Great dinner

By Barbara g |

We were eight. We had a nice table and excellent, attentive service. The sangria was superb, as was the food, of which we sampled a large variety. It was a little noisy but not as bad as many places All in all, a lovely evening

Good Tapas

By Craiger8 |

Everything here was good and the Paella stood out. Atmosphere is good and the service is excellent. Definitely on our rotation now.

Authentic tapas in Texas? Yes!

By Victoria S |

The chef/owner of Barlata hails from Spain and the authenticity of his dishes is apparent. Barlata is a loud, happening place, even on a Monday night, when we arrived. This wasn't a problem for us, as we were a large party of six (and probably loud, too). It was an after-work drinks and tapas crowd there, chatting up a storm--so, this isn't a place for a quiet, romantic dinner for two, although sitting outside might be a good option in that situation. Our server was very helpful with menu suggestions and we tried a vast selection of small plates and enjoyed two paellas as well. Everything was delicious and we came away very satisfied. The wine list is heavy on Spanish wines, and the Garnacha we drank was fantastic. Lots of fun and terrific food. What's not to love about that?

Second visit confirms our earlier experience. Recommended dining in Austin.

By Waterloonie |

Barlata is a noisy boisterous cacophony of fun and the food is delicious. Great selection of Spanish wines. Service is friendly and professional. Recommended!

New Find in Austin tonight

By michellemarshall2017 |

Started out with Citrus Cured Salmon with melon and sesame seeds! What a beautiful presentation of a great starter dish. I think we could have another one!!! My husband does not usually not praise starter dishes but he loved this. The melons were honeydew and cantaloupe! Great pairing!!! Sorry to interrupt Michelle. I have to say our waiter DJ was 👍! Looking forward to our main course of Paella Barceloneta (Saffron, fish and shellfish)😀 Oh Wow it was absolutely really fabulous l!!! Great overall experience👍😀! (done by my husband..Joseph) Back to me after my husband added his comments...my overall review of Barlata Tapas Bar is beyond excellent. Atmosphere is vibrant! Food was far better than I expected. Restroom was clean. Staff is friendly. We will be coming back!!!

Paella and flamenco dancers equal a good time!

By Dianne H |

We drove all the way across Austin in rush hour traffic to eat paella at Barlata, and it was SO worth it! The hostess found us 2 seats at the bar, because the restaurant was fully booked - it was Flamenco night! The paella was exactly what we wanted, and the seats at the bar were in view of the dance floor. The skill and grace of the dancers were a perfect accompaniment to the excellent empanadas, paella and lemon pudding. And we met a friendly knowledgeable guy at the bar who told us about Spanish culture, history, and cuisine. Altogether a fun and delightful experience!

Sad revisit

By barretta |

We've been to Barlata a good number of times since they opened, but had not been for about 6 months for some reason. This retrospective was a sad one, as the food had deteriorated in flavor and ingenuity. Everything we had stuck to the table, which was not an issue of 'clean' but the finish on our table was sticky. Standards we had eaten before were just not as good. Too many good places in Austin to keep those on your regulars list when they are in decline. Maybe just the bar scene is the ticket? Anyway, it was a disappointment.

Excellent Meal

By lucycan |

Went here for the first time as a party of 3. Super nice staff. We tried about 15 different dishes and most were amazing, a few incredible, and one just good. Nice cocktails too!

Variety of good spanish delicacies, attentive service

By John T |

We went with our daughter and sat at one of the communal tables. It is a festive atmosphere and tends to get loud. Otherwise, the small plates gave us an opportunity to sample multiple dishes. All were excellent with the exception of the octopus. We mentioned it to the server who promptly took it away and offered us anything we wanted on the menu on the house. Would definitely return.

Nice surprise

By SayangMBelanda |

This visit was during COVID so does not represent normal operations. We had a reservation and were seated promptly. Seemed all tables were evenly spread out and only half were occupied. There was only one waiter, as a result the wait times were a bit longer as we would have liked it to be. Food was nicely presented, and most of it was tasty. Interesting lt there was no Spanish Tortilla featured on the menu. The Pitcher of Sangria tasted more like red wine and no fruits were found. All in all Iwould recommend.

A LATA good food!

By MsChuckles114 |

My husband and I are always up for new date night experience so we were happy to find a tapas location not far from home. When I saw my girlfriend, Melissa there with her husband Scott, I knew this place very just be good. She b knows all the good places. We were greeted immediately with a smile and welcome. Our waitress was outstanding, offering suggestions, checking on us often, we were never without something we need. The good was SO good. From mushrooms, shrimp in garlic, peppers, to pork loin and crispy duck, it was all well prepared and delicious! We just have come at the right time because as we left there was a crowd waiting. They must have known it was worth it! We will be back!

Wow, a clear winner!

This pretty tapas restaurant is owned and run by a Spanish husband and wife team, who know their stuff. Very authentic tapas, great selection, wonderfully prepared, and served at the right leisurely pace. The bread was locally sourced and fresh with good chewy crust. We started with the vegetable mousse stuffed baby eggplant which was a terrific mix of flavors, pretty presentation of 2 halved eggplants. Next came the gambas al ajillo, a standard garlicky shrimp sauté (good test of Spanish tapas). The shrimp were done just right with nice bite, not overcooked served in a warm miniskillet with the robust garlic oil, just the right presence as the cooking softens and sweetens the garlic. The grilled Spanish chorizo was simple as it should be to appreciate the flavors of this wonderful sausage (more subtle flavors that Mexican). Grilled pulpo was another of our tests for tapas. The perfectly cooked octopus passed with flying colors. A great bottle of Muga Reserva (reasonably priced for this fine Spanish wine, and one which spans the flavor profiles of our tapas selections). Definitely one of those places we would frequent regularly if we were locals.

Nice place for Tapas

By glennroid |

Went there to celebrate a family birthday recently. We were happy to find we arrived in time to enjoy happy hour prices. Very nice menu, lots of interesting variety. We had Spanish Olives, Ahi Tuna Tartar, Brussel Sprouts, Baked Cauliflower, Pork Ribs and a Seafood Paella. Everything was tasty and served fresh. Service was great and it was an good choice for our celebration.

Good and tasty

By james z |

Had a decent dinner at the bar. The tapas are very tasty and good range of choices. Octopus legs are my favorite and Spanish wine selections pretty good. Worthy trying.

Not worth it

By Russell D |

The worst paella I have ever had. It was fishy. The lamb empanadas were great. The dungeons crab peppers wee also good . Won't be back.

Tapas and more...

By Jorge L |

Like the place, have to congratulate the owners for finding the right formula to charge high for very little food. We started with the empanadas, 5 tiny flavorful pasties, that look more like Dim Sum. Also, we ordered the tortilla with potato, good, nothing special, and again small. To share, we ordered some chorizo, my son loved the selection, calling it the best sausage he has had. We also had the hearts, so tiny that it was hard to evaluate the taste. Third, we ordered the arroz negre. A better sized dish and good to share with a couple of people, we had the large. Overall, good but not great, maybe their prices should reflect that.

Amazing tapas!!!

By kerrycorcoran |

This review is hard to write because we are so many amazing things. A few small downsides they didn't have many veggie or greens on the menu. Would have loved some Brussel sprouts or asparagus. If there's ware just 2 of you, you will be sat at a long table so you are sitting next to strangers. Not a huge deal but you can literally eat off their plates. We ordered Mussels that were the best mussels I have ever eaten. Short ribs that melted in your mouth. Oxtail on top of mashed potatoes and grave, it was amazing! We order calamari it was good but probably won't order it again. Lamb was very good as well. We finished with a cheese board and dessert wine. Great place and priced very well. Would suggest it for just a night out or couples. Probably not the best place for a large group.

Impressive restaurant

By Jacob2920 |

Really excellent tasting tapas, interesting combinations with lots of flavor, can easily compete with some of the great tapas restaurants in Barcelona Spain. A must go. We came all the way from Denmark, Europe and was not dissapointed.

Amazing food!

By W N |

On our way to Austin, the gentleman in the seat next to me suggested my husband and I try this restaurant during our stay in Austin. We were not sorry we went a bit out of our way to try it! Arrived during happy hour, actually found out that Monday had all day happy hour! Was pleasantly surprised with the house Tempranillo. Our waiter Alex was excellent. Tried the clams, lamb brochettes, calamari, and paella were all excellent. Highly recommend!

Good Tapas and Paellas

By Winetex |

We've been to Barlata several times now. The food is solid at this restaurant with a variety of Tapas and Paellas. It is a bit difficult to gauge the amount of food to order but the waitstaff is very helpful and knowledgeable. If you tell them what you like they will steer you in the right direction. The wine list has good variety and mostly a 2X retail price mark-up except for some of the finer wines. Please stop with the high table/backless bar stool trend in every single new restaurant. Yes we know you can seat a lot more people this way but there is no place for handbags (how about hooks???) and by the end of dinner my back is aching.

Excellent

By biggerbettertennis |

Had dinner here last Friday and found it to be very good with creative and fun selections. Blair was our server and found her to be most knowledgeable. She was patient in answering our questions and was spot on with recommendations. This was one of the better meals we have experienced in some time and will definitely go again the next time we visit Austin.

Update--the tapas continue to be wonderful, it is like a cheap "pain free" trip to Spain

By 1234texas |

Chef Daniele Olivella, chef/owner of Barlata, is a great chef and a very nice person. He has done a fine job in this location and his food is excellent. I just have a hard time making tapas a "5." This is an incredibly casual and fun way to have a dinner--as I have written up concerning our most recent trip to Spain. It is not fine dining, and I tend to reserve that for the "5" rating. What we like is his creativity and beautiful presentation of the tapas. The fact that they taste so good is simply frosting on the cake! Whatever you do, do this with friends--it is THE ONLY WAY to really get a sense for what the tapas experience is--just plain fun! The nice wines only enhance the experience. For those readers that have never had tapas is a very traditional Spanish method, this is a great place to start. The location is great--4,000 miles west of Spain, and there is no flight required! The atmosphere is much more attractive than any we have done in Spain, but I do miss the historic atmosphere a bit.... If nothing else, it will make you want t travel to Spain to do your own comparisons! As much as we love Spain, we plan to do this stop more often to keep reminding us of why we like to go there!

Excellent food, Great Experience, Great Ambience.

By JorgeGutiJag |

The food was great so was the service. The owners are really nice people. I strongly recommend this restaurant. Nice ambience.

I don't get some of these reviews, both times average, nothing special

By bradley e |

I have been both as a couple and a group and neither time was outstanding. I was disappointed both times in fact. Nothing stands out and it was good, not great.

Everything is so tasty!

We went there while traveling in Austin. Found this place amazing with the quality and taste of the food. We ordered something like 8 tapas items, all great.

Batting .500 at Barlata

By Johnny ATX |

In baseball you can make millions batting .500, at a restaurant it’s not so great. As reviewed, there were hits and misses. Typical Austin Texas dining out experience, with lackadaisical service (no surprise there). I asked the server for some fresh fizzy Txakolina (a native white grape from Spain’s Basque region), she assured me it would be but I got the feeling that she had no idea what I was talking about. Of course, it was flat (these wines lose their fizz and freshness over night but God forbid a restaurant would open a fresh bottle and lose the wine cost by tossing the leftover wine - when everyone knows most restaurants charge the entire cost of the bottle for one glass of wine). I should have sent it back but I was thirsty and our salad came promptly. Argula, goat cheese and beet salad is a big hit here. It was fantastic. Tangy dressing, a huge portion, the beets were perfectly marinated. Along with that came a weird house cured salmon and melon small plate. I love lox and smoked salmon so I’m not one to complain about fish actually tasting like fish, but this was not good. Fish was just not fresh. We ate half of it and waited for bigger plates. I opted for a safer choice on wine and got the Albarino. It was stellar, a great pick and very fresh. Braised leg of Duck came out. It was dry. Not much point in keeping that item on the menu. Veggie Paella (the “Hortelana” I think) came out. It was outstanding. The rice was perfect, very creamy. Oodles of flavor. Considering how labor intensive it is to make paella at home this dish is worth many repeat visits alone. Server was pretty much just going through the motions so when she came to the table to run the card I tried to opt for a 15% tip but of course the card reader only listed 25%, 20% and 18%. I didn’t want to bother with figuring out 15% while she hovered above me so I left 18% (perhaps I should have just done 10%, an easy calculation and appropriate for my response to not being able to just hit a “15%” button). I do appreciate having card readers at the table. A good investment. Hits and misses at prices that should deliver mostly hits. Welcome to dining out in Austin...

Can't Wait to Come Back!

By d e |

We had an errand to run on South Lamar, so we decided to make an afternoon of it and treat ourselves to lunch at Barlata. We are always looking for new places to eat in Austin, and this spot has jumped to the top of "we have to come back" list. Eddie, our server, did a fantastic job of welcoming us on our first visit and explaining the menu, including the wine options. Most of the items we selected on this first go were his recommendations, and all of them were fantastic! The wine list is exclusively Spanish, with an array of options by the glass. We had the txokolina and the albarino - both perfect for pairing with tapas in the summer. The menu items we enjoyed were: * Romaine salad with romesco, garlic croutons and Idiazabal cheese, It was crisp with a delicate, smoky flavored vinaigrette. * Pa amb tomaquet i peril - Grilled Catalan toast with jamon Serrano. Loved the pureed fresh tomato spread on perfectly grilled bread. * Gambas Ajillo - Shrimp with Garlic/Olive Oil. The spices used in this dish were exquisite! * Mel I Mato - Goat cheese mousse-like cheesecake sitting on top of a walnut torte (with hints of orange, and served with vanilla ice cream, with a hint of sherry. Definitely one of the best desserts we've had out in a LONG time. Each component was perfectly executed, and all together played beautifully together on the plate - a delicious combo of flavors and textures. Thank you Eddie for taking the time to make our dining experience such a memorable one. Hats off to the kitchen as well. We look forward to coming back for dinner soon!!

Barlata: Tapas Not Entirely Worth the Wait

By Gabrielle F |

Over the past decade the tapas trend has continued to grow here in Austin. For those who like to graze, such as myself, the ability to order several small plates and share them with friends is the perfect dining experience. From a romantic evening for two, to a large group of friends, there is a certain old world charm to tapas that is hard to replicate with other menus. Years ago there was a beautiful little tapas bar located on Lavaca Street in the downtown bar district which I frequented often. Sadly, as with many businesses, when the recession of the mid 2000’s hit it became a casualty of the economic crisis. Since that time I’ve been on the hunt for my next tapas obsession. So when I heard about Barlata I was thrilled to make my reservations. Instead of waxing poetic about the food, which in any other review would be my main focus, let me cut straight to the point. My issues with Barlata really have nothing to do with the food itself, which was delicious. If served up in another setting, I would most likely return. However, I doubt I will be revisiting this establishment any time soon. While beautifully designed upon first glance, the owners have crammed so many tables inside that, no matter where you are sitting, on a busy evening, you are mere inches away from the other guests. At one point the woman sitting next to us actually had to invite the waiter to sit down at her table because he was having to stand so close to her to take her order that she was becoming uncomfortable. Talk about awkward… In addition, the customer service was extremely lacking. There appeared to be between six to eight different waiters, but for some reason it took an unacceptable amount of time to receive any portion of our order. The waiters seemed confused, even frustrated at times, visiting each other’s tables, but not responding to people raising their hands to make requests. Most of all I noticed our waiter failed to to check back in routinely with any of the tables assigned to him leaving his customers staring around in awkward uncertainty as they wondered if he would ever return. The energy in the restaurant felt edgy, the expressions on fellow patrons exasperated and annoyed. When expected to pay a premium price for the menu, one expects a certain level of customer service. I’m afraid Barlata has it all wrong. Towards the end of our meal, realizing it was going to be impossible to order anything else in a reasonable amount of time, we decided to take our martinis and relocate to the patio, which has seen better days. The waiter, I suppose finally realizing our irritation, chased us outside with a desert menu. Ordinarily, at this point, I would have said no, but there was one item on the, a manchego cheesecake with fig and peach chutney that sounded rather interesting. Twenty minutes later we were still waiting for the slice of cheesecake. When it did finally arrive, it certainly did not live up to expectations. The restaurant industry is a tricky one to succeed in – there are so many elements an owner must take into consideration from the flow of the tables down to the type of silverware used. Unfortunately a team of solid chefs cannot make up for deficiencies in all other aspects of an establishment. As aforementioned, the food at Barlata is not the problem. Is it the most extraordinary tapas I’ve ever consumed? No, but it was enjoyable. And in any other setting I would definitely give this restaurant another chance. However, my experience was so uncomfortable and frustrating that I will not be dining at Barlata again. If you are still interested in visiting Barlata, my advice would be to call and find out when the least busy night is so that you can have the full attention of your waiter, or sit at the bar.

Sunday afternoon for after concert tapas

By J Craig W |

We decided to get something light after the play and we remembered trying Barleta's once before and we were pleased then. It turned out to be perfect as there was no crowd this early in the day (A little after five) and no problem with sitting at the bar. I asked the bartender how it was on Friday and Saturday nights. 'Packed' he said, "You are here at a good time." We ordered which turned out to be an excellent glass of wine (Happy Hours prices) and Volka soda. We had the beet and goat salad, shrimp and octopus ceviche and the daily palle which was chicken and chorrizo with rice. All of them were excellent. I'm not sure how I would like it when it was crowded especially with the tables in the bar area being community style but if one is outgoing it probably is a good way to meet other people. The restaurant area has regular dining sitting so one can have a dinner for two without having to share the entire table with others. But on this Sunday afternoon it was all great.

'Tapas, Tapas, Tapas" !!!!

By William V |

Barlata is a fun, Spanish experience! After all tapas are what eating is all about. Their small plates are a fun way to enjoy each others company, and try a number of different things. This was my second trip to Barlata and won't be my last. My last visit was for dinner. This trip we went for lunch/brunch on Sunday afternoon and had: Bloody Mary's (spicy and refreshing) Grilled Steak with huevos fritas, salsa bravo and fries (delicious) Romaine Salad with an awesome caeser dressing ( fresh and beautiful) House Cured Salmon ( very tasty) Pulpo octopus with fingerlin potatoes and adobe sauce (Wow, it was sooo good!) This trip we were celebrating a family members birthday, and the service and beautiful presentation made it memorable with great hospitality!

Very good experience

By allabouthappiness |

I had to choose a place to celebrate my birthday while in Austin and stumbled up on Barlata as I was looking for Spanish restaurants. I have to say that their food was great but the portion was unexpectedly small. I understand that they’re tapas and supposed to be small but the portions of tapas in Spain when I visited Madrid and Barcelona were much larger that these. We ordered clams, lamb skewers, garlic shrimp, flat breads, and paella and loved them all, especially the paella with sausage and seafood (the first one on the paella menu). We also had a bottle of Chardonnay which was very good. Barlata had a great deal on Sunday which it offers 50% off all white wine by the bottle. Their Crema Catalana was delicious with a hint of lemon. The atmosphere of the restaurant was also nice and the staffs were friendly.

Amazing Tapas and great happy hour specials

By Ralph N |

We received a recommendation from a fellow passenger as we were flying in to Austin from Albuquerque. He recommended this restaurant very highly. We were not disappointed. The happy hour specials were awesome, and everything was extremely tasty. Prices were very reasonable. The calamari was excellent, as well as the paella. The clams were absolutely amazing, and so was the lamb. Alex was an amazing server and had great recommendations for us. I highly recommend this restaurant.

Phenomenal

By ElvisAndrus |

Every bite was scrumptious. If you were very hungry the price of the dishes given their size would add up and it would be an expensive place to eat. That being said, we went on a Monday where it is happy hour prices all night and did very well. If price matters I would advise going either on Monday or early for the happy hour prices. They offer a flight of four different dry sherries which you just don’t get everywhere. That also made it special. The food was so good I won’t mention any particular dish because I imagine everything is worth it. Ok, ribs were awesome. The service, as you might expect, was both professional and friendly.

Worst Spanish Tapas

By valencia717 |

I am from Spain (Madrid and Barcelona). This place had the worst tapas. The fabada is a smashed bean soup. You cant hardly see the chorizo or morcilla or the fabas. The same goes for the callos. The server was terrible. I asked her several times for a glass of sangria and she kept asking me if I wanted something else to drink.instead of bringing me the sangria . At the end she never brought me the drink but it was charged on the bill. The tapas were brought one by one instead of serving them in groups to share. The tortilla de patatas is so thin that it looks like a Tortilla Francesa (plain omelette) (couldn't hardly see the eggs and potatoes). The price was high compared to the quality of the tapas

Fine Tapas restuarant; great place to share dishes over a bottle of wine

By Hale F |

The restaurant has a great variety of tapas depending on your mood. For appetizers the snapper was light and tart. One of our party enjoyed the Octopus. Recommend the Paella Barcelloneta, seafood. The service was good and the staff understood the menu well.

Best place in Austin for dinner with friends

Always have a fantastic dining experience here and the waitstaff is phenomenal! Can't recommend it enough!

Wide Variety of Tapas and Paellas

By DandDAustin |

Family group of seven with three generations so wide variety of tastes in food. The group ordered fifteen items and lots of sharing made all the food disappear. The family is used to having paella at home so to be honest they preferred the home version. Most of the non-paella items were new to the group and thoroughly enjoyed.

Taste of Spain

By RileyD94133 |

Barlata is a very tasty slice of Spain. All the dishes we ordered were seasoned boldly. The restaurant decor was as loud as the restaurant itself, making it very difficult to have any type of conversation. If the food weren't as good as it was, I probably would not go back.

Authentic Tapas Bar in Austin

By Ginny B |

Just down on South Lamar is an excellent spot for sampling authentic Spanish tapas. I loved it the minute I walked in. The open, modern concept with a traditional Spanish feel. The menu was equally impressive with many options making it hard to narrow it down, but here is what I did and all were home runs: Arros Negre[its similar to a luscious risotto dish], Pincho Moruno [grilled lamb] - the sauce was finger licking good and the roasted beet salad along with a light white wine. It was flawless and I can't wait to return.

Mouth Watering Flavors!!!! 😍

By KathyM63 |

Delicious food! Awesome atmosphere and not to mention incredibly friendly staff! The staff was also super helpful when ordering since my friends and I had no clue what we were doing! They suggested the Ox Tail, the Lamb stuffed Empanadas, whole quail with garlic allioli, patatas bravas, and arroz cacañada! Absolutely everything we ordered was chocked full of flavor! Every bites made you craving wanting more!!! I will advise everyone I know to go check out this place! It's an amazing EXPERIENCE! One for the books!!! 😍❤️

Authentic Spanish Tapas Bar

By ColoradoJ |

Great food, wide variety, reasonable prices, good service. There were three people in our group, and sharing five tapas dishes gave us plenty to eat and a wide variety of choices.

Let down by poor service

By Mistoffelees_the_cat |

This should have been a nice meal - the first few tapas plates came out quickly and were very tasty. The next two arrived 30 minutes later - that was OK. The problem - the wine finally arrived 10 minutes after we finished. Not great.

Very good tapas!

By Keke5 |

I was skeptical about tapas but what a nice surprice! Very good food and wine selection. Try happy hour is possible, save me a trip to Barcelona.

Best tapas I have had for a long time!

By Jorunn W |

If you are looking for an authentic, good tapas place this is definitly the place! The food was excellent, perfect cooked and the flavors were soo good! Would also really recoment the drinks. All in all best place I have eaten on in Austin so far!

Fantastic happy hour menu

By Mike C |

We tried the calamari, pork loin with pickled onions, ceviche and the daily paella. All four dishes had incredible taste. The calamari app was so good we ordered one for dessert.

Service is KING and when its bad.....

By Melissa A |

There was a group of 6 of us at brunch. The restaurant was NOT busy. The waiter "forgot" to turn in the order for one of our party. She asked about her meal after we all received ours and the waiter then told us he forgot to turn it in and that he would do it and get her order out ASAP (it was only two eggs). After about 30 more minutes she asked again and he had nothing to day. To say the least all of us were done with our VERY AVERAGE meals. She left hungry...we all left angry. The manager on duty NEVER even came over to speak with her :(

TAPAS!!!

By travelers1983 |

Barlata is hands down an amazing restaurant! Definitely one of my go-to's in Austin and an absolute must if you're a foodie or lover of all things Espana. I honestly cannot say enough good things about it but I'll throw out a few: Decor and build out is super fun. It's a very interactive, lively environment. Parking is easy with extra in the attached apartment garage as well. There's the main dining area but also a generous bar area to either eat in or wait for your table. In terms of service they're great. If you want to eat fast they can make it happen and if you want to take your time and just chill the waiters are never annoyed when you ask to take it slow. Your water is always full and they offer you new plates in between selections should you choose to not mix flavors. The front of the house is always polite and try their best to accommodate requests. They have several large tables that can handle large groups too. Food wise it's incredible. They have a wonderful range of traditional to innovative Spanish tapas. The bravas are the best I've ever had, including in Spain itself. There's so many options no matter what your diet is you can find something to enjoy. There's cold, hot, rich, hearty and light options. The waitstaff are always very helpful with dish descriptions too if you need recommendations. The paella is superb and we always love ending our meal with one. There are several difference varieties and while I love them all the black paella is hands down my favorite and I believe the fan favorite as well. The desserts are super fun takes on Spanish classics (think smoky almond cake with brown butter ice cream!). Happy hour offers a selection of discount bites that allow you to try quiet a few fan favorites off of the menu. Brunch is a great option as well and definitely something different from the land of migas and breakfast tacos. Drink wise you've hit the jackpot. They have a house mixologist who's created a fun cocktail menu that changes seasonally. They have several beers on tap and quite a few bottle options as well. And of course they offer a wide selection of Spanish wines (rose, white, red and sparkling). All in all a very affordable, enjoyable list whether you're looking for just a glass or an entire bottle. It's great to be able to go to a restaurant and feel at home because everyone is so pleasant. This restaurant really excels in so many ways and stands out from so many other local restaurants. EVERYONE that works there is so passionate about the quality of EVERYTHING and that's always exciting for foodies like us to see and experience.

Great tapas

By SeattleLifejazz |

I've eaten here twice. Olives, roasted peppers, bass with bacon, brisket cannoli, lamb empanadas, ceviche & seafood paella all consistently excellent. Both waiters recommended bottles of Spanish wine which were on point. Both times I could have a conversation with my dining partner. Plus easy parking in the adjacent garage. I returned once and will come back my next time in Austin.

Excellent service and food!

By Shelley G |

If you're looking for something different in Austin, this is your place. Great location in SOLA with a patio. The menu is vast as is their Spanish wine list. We had about 10 Tapas - all excellent!

A little uneven, expensive, but worth a second shot

By JrMushroom |

We came here for a special occasion, and had an enjoyable time and decent food. Nothing on the menu was particularly outstanding, and we actually didn't eat as much as we expected to subsequently (didn't order the Paella as expected). The Calamari and chorizo plates, and one of the salads we ordered in particular were average. We ended with a nice dessert, which left us feeling like we needed to give it a second try. A nice, large corporate-type place with good service and atmosphere for business and special occasions, so I hope it was an anomaly.

Excellent Tapas

By Counterweight |

Had a nice dinner here with my wife recently. Barlata has a good location in the teeming South Lamar section of Austin, not too far south of downtown. We chose Barlata based on a recommendation from friends who live nearby and who love it. We made reservations for a Friday night dinner, we were glad we did as the place was packed when we arrived. The decor is open, friendly and inviting. This is nice but it also makes the place very loud, several times during the evening I had to ask my wife to repeat what she had just said. The tables are also really close to each other, so this might not be the best place to have dinner if you're planning to discuss intimate or embarrassing topics. Our server was very professional, attentive but not intrusive. All that being said, the food was really amazing. We had a couple of their paellas, one with pork belly and mushrooms, the other with vegetables. Both were really good and really well-seasoned. I also had a seafood dish with shrimp. scallops and mussels, the sauce it came in was delicious. I also tried their "Spanish Gin and Tonic", it was a traditional gin and tonic with spices like coriander included. It was good, but a bit pricey in my opinion. For dessert we tried a rosemary cake, we really liked the cake but were not big fans of the sherry sauce it came with. It had been a while for me since I had last tried tapas, I'm really glad we chose Barlata for our meal. You have a ton of wonderful dining options in Austin, and even on South Lamar nearby to Barlata, but I would definitely recommend you consider Barlata for a fun night out with very tasty food.

Paella- is incredible

By markstorey |

I was pleasantly surprised by the personal sized Paella. That way, my wife and I ordered different ones, and shared. I appreciated the approachable wine list, too. We'll return soon!

Basque Tapas

By Todd N |

I live in Oakland, CA, and this was one of my favorite neighborhood spots...until the owners decided to move to the best city in America, Austin! I finally got w chance to check it out. The outdoor seating in Oakland didn't have the oppressive Central Texas humidity, but otherwise, the food is the same. I took some friends last night, one of whom is Basque. Divine. You can't go wrong. We had about 12 dishes and every one was excellent. My only question is, "When ya coming back to the 5 and dime, Jimmy Dean?"

Good tapas, slow service

By ET101 |

My brother booked this restaurant for dinner on a Saturday night, he said it served authentic tapas. I was a bit skeptical but the food was indeed authentic Spanish food, we had been to Spain. The wine list had plenty of European wines, not just US or Chile. They had different types of paella, we ordered the seafood paella and it had quite alot of seafood just like the picture. My favourite was the skewers, you can choose any 3 among the 10 or so choices. presentation of the food was also quite nice, too bad I didn’t take any pictures so cannot share here. The only thing was the slow service. Though it was Saturday night, the restaurant was just about 70% occupied. And yet we had to wait so long to get attention of the wait staff. Think the restaurant needs to hire more staff

Best Spanish restaurant

By Deutsch16 |

The best Spanish restaurant I've ever been to. Delicious octopus that melts in your mouth. Outstanding paella. The crunchy and toasty rice in the bottom of the paella was incredible. The fish stock was prime quality. This has become my favorite restaurant of 2016 by far.

Small plate satisfaction

By Lockmk |

We really fancied an evening of small plates and were keen to see what this highly-rated Austin establishment had to offer. It's location is a little strange, being on a corner of what looks like a strip mall. Nonetheless, parking was easy in the covered lot and the inside of the restaurant was interesting and had a good buzz. Our waitress was knowledgeable and helped us navigate. Everything we ordered was first-rate. I have a weakness for tapas and have eaten it all over the country, as well as in Spain. While not Barcelona quality, I really enjoyed our selections and would recommend. Service was very spotty, however. Our waitress was great but some of the other serving staff, for bread, water and so on were absolutely clueless and we had the wrong food delivered to our table on three occasions. Anyway, this minor irritation aside, I enjoyed our visit and would go back.

South Lamar HotSpot

By Bill H |

Lots of activity at Barlata Tapas! This is a good place to go more than once so you can branch out and investigate the menu. I've enjoyed everything that I've tried, but I really enjoy the garlic shrimp and the bravas (potatoes). They seem to have a very knowledgeable waitstaff who are very patient as they describe the dishes. Food is brought out in stages and wine-by-the-glass is brought out in carafes rather than being poured at the table. It is a lively, loud room with booths, tables, and a large communal dining table near the bar. I'd recommend a reservation, especially on the weekend. Free parking is a plus in the adjoining lot and residential garage. Not a place for a quiet, romantic dinner, but a great place to go with a group of friends.

Barbara for Carlotta

By Charlotte H |

Yikes. So delish. Tapas like in Barcelona. As great. My fave. The short ribs. Redolent flavors. Kale. Eggplant. Chorizo plate. Potates. All terrific. Layers of flavors. Beautifully prepared and presented by Erik. A great waiter in the tradition of Italia. Cheese platter. All wonderful. Joan anguerra la planella wonderful big and earthy red. Thanks again to Erik. Great ambiance. Very cool Austin folks all around.

Amazing Tapas - a must visit

By Perseph0ne_79 |

My husband and I popped into this unassuming tapas bar almost by accident. The menu is authentic and exquisitely prepared- rivaling and besting some of the most popular stateside tapas bars (Jaleo). The drink menu is wonderful with Sherries galore. Excellent afternoon out. We can't wait to return.

Highly recommended dining in Austin. Go!

By Waterloonie |

Four of us had 12 completely different tapas plates to share and each was absolutely delicious. Service was knowledgeable and efficient. The wine list had several dozen Spanish wines to choose from. When in Austin, Barlata is a top choice for dining with your friends. We will return for sure. Highly recommended.

Excellent!

By Natalie P |

Wonderfully, unique dishes. An excellent way to treat yourself and someone you love. Run, don't walk to Barlata.

Overpriced tapas bar featuring some interesting fare

By Wisprof |

Tapas is trendy, so in the U.S. customers can expect to pay. In Spain, tapas are usually free for customers who pay to drink. As people walk from bar to bar, imbibing, they can check out the specialities of each establishment. Of course, afficiandos are not likely to find such interesting fare elsewhere, so be prepared to pay. Our experience was that the wines were three times the price of a bottle in a store and many of the dishes (e.g., paella) were quite average in flavor and preparation. Four of us enjoyed ourselves, but afer several hours we are waked to leave to make room for new reservations.

Authentic Spanish

By Hunt4game |

The food here is very flavorful and always well presented. Service is fast and friendly with enough attention, but not too much. The chef has anew book with his recipes which is a great value! Buy it when there and he will personalize it for you. It’s always busy in the tables by the bar, there is a reduced price menu for food and drinks there.

Makes a Happier Happy Hour

By ndmny |

A well-kept secret in Austin-if you want authentic spanish tapas and sangria, then put this on your happy hour list. The happy hour specials are well worth the visit. The place has ample seating for groups or individuals, and the tapas are fantastic! Each night has a specialty pairing of paella and wine--and the sangria really is superb. Not overly fruity-the right touch of cinnamon and brandy. Would be a great place for a first date or meet with friends for happy hour.

Tapas restaurant with spotty menu

By Sara G |

Tapas (small plates) restaurant on Lamar. We had a few items on the menu, but there were definite hits and misses. The misses: the Mussels with sofrito, peas and pancetta - the mussels were stringy and tasted strangely earthy. The Piquillo peppers with Dungeness crab were overly soft and we had a difficult time locating the crab. Winners were the Pork Meatballs, the plate of delicately shaved jamon Iberico (ham), and the Braised Oxtail ( like a comforting plate of tender pot roast). Server was friendly and helpful with wine selections. Reservations are suggested. Seating is closely related to European standards - if you're bored, you can easily listen in on your neighbor.

Tapas..mostly bueno

By TXDiva2013 |

Interesting plates. Prepare to be adventurous... Not for the burgers and wings set...I highly recommend that you review the menu before you go. You may need to google some of the words...I love to cook and I did Google! Oxtails were the best according to our group of 3. Waitress was a little annoyed at having to explain so many things on the menu...so why assume people know?? I hate food snobbiness. Just write what it is in the menu....if its salted cod just say that....I also had to ask for a drink twice....would I come back... Maybe.

Decent food, excellent service

By Andrea S |

Service was excellent...attentive and knowledgeable of the menu. I thought the food was good, but it didn't blow me away. Menu items we ordered included the beet salad, which was fresh and I really enjoyed it (probably the item I like the best), the cheese plate (typical cheese plate), the bravas (another good item), the snapper (also very good), the paella hortelana (vegetarian, a good comfort food item). We also had the tenderloin and migas, which I thought was bland. I would probably go again, but I feel like there are better more flavor-able places in Austin.

You will need wine with your salt

By ezfish |

A real Tapas joint Austin can be proud of. I love it. Large and diverse menu of tapas and entree plates. Great wine selection. Great full bar. Busy as can be. Good for groups if you call ahead. Parking is a problem. Salty dishes, but delicious.

Nice atmosphere, so so food.

By jode1992 |

Went for dinner with a friend at the recommendation of others. Didn't have a reservation so sat at the communal table which was fine but our table mates were not in the communal table mood. No interaction. The food was good but nothing special. One of us had the lobster paella which came with the whole lobster on top (cracked). Paella was not like any I have had before. Very gummy and brown in color. Tasty but just not great. My friend had a beef plate with french fries. This was much better in my opinion. There were many dishes on the menu that were just a little to adventurous for my palate so perhaps they would have been better?? The atmosphere was good but I'm not sure I will go back?

Great ambiance and delicious food

By worldly12016 |

Friendly staff. Catalan Chef Daniel is well versed in his native cuisine. Food is excellent. Black rice is a must try. Barcelona's Estrella Damm beer fresh from keg.

A fast food like

By Dr-JAS-AUSTIN |

Went for a dinner after reading the good reviews and got disappointed with the food, I believe most people haven't try a real tapas, to begin with gambas al ajillo( shrimp with garlic) was a precook shrimp with garlic, no flavor on the shrimp, then patatas bravas was not close of a real bravas (spicy) taste like, more like potatoes with a tomato base salsa, and finished with lobster paella for 2, dissatisfied with the amount of rice and seafood With the paella, anyway for the price I guess was just ok, I won't recommend to a family or a friend.

Beware of Barlata's "Happy Hour!"

By Lynn H |

We visited on Dec 23rd as a party of 7 and was told that we there during their Happy Hour which we all thought was great...we immediately started ordering items off of the Happy Hour menu but were not aware that we literally had to say the word "Happy Hour" before each item to get the Happy Hour price. The first person in our group to order happened to say the words "Happy Hour" before ordering, but the rest of us assumed since each following item we ordered was on the Happy Hour menu we would also be getting the Happy Hour price (as is the case with every Happy Hour I've ever been to...as long as you order within the time frame that Happy Hour is in and the item is on the Happy Hour menu, you would assume you would receive the Happy Hour price.) So it was quite a shock when our bill came and we noticed that only those the items from the person who mentioned Happy Hour actually corresponded with the Happy Hour price. We asked the server about this and she went and spoke to who I assumed was the manager and came back and said there was nothing she could do since the rest of us didn't actually say we were ordering from the Happy Hour menu. What?! I can't even imagine how this could be the case. For any items that we ordered after Happy Hour was over or for our drinks that we knew were not on Happy Hour, we were totally expecting to pay full price of course, but for all those other items that we specifically chose during Happy Hour AND on the Happy Hour menu it just doesn't make any sense. One of the couples in our group are small business owners in Austin and they themselves have a Happy Hour at their own establishment, even reached out to Barlata's management a few days after this experience to give them time to explain what might have happened before I wrote this review, however up to today they have not received any response. Super disappointing. Unfortunately we will not be returning to Barlata after this experience.

WOW was that yummy!

By Jeff L |

Cool decor, super friendly service. Great recommendations from the staff and absolutely delicious food! It's a bit off of the beaten path but well worth the trip!

Excellent Tapas and Ambient

By NestorChavez |

We tried several tapas and all of them were delicious, You can fill the Spanish touch on every tapa. I also ordered a fidegua but I have to admit that it was not a traditional Fidegua, to me the plate was more an Asian style than a Spanish seafood fidegua but it was not so bad at all. Iberico croquetas was our favorite tapas, the place is colorful and ambient is excellent. I definitely will come back with friends. Ordenamos diferentes tapas y todas estaban estupendas.

Best tapas ever

Wow great food, incredible service, in a fun atmosphere! We will be back again, and again, and again ...., What else Can I say but add this place to your bucket list.

Charged for Restaurant's Mistake

By Jasmin R |

The food and ambiance was incredible, but get this. The waiter brought an order of brussel sprouts to our table. We passed it around and ate them and he came back over to tell us actually those came to the table by accident (the restaurant's fault). When the check came, they let us know that they would be charging us for the brussel sprouts that they put on our table by accident. Really surprised such a great establishment so obviously put their mistake on the customer.

Delicious Tapas

By maggiet0813 |

Been wanting to eat at Barlata for a while now and we finally made it. The place is very nicely set. There are really 2 sections: the section next to the bar has communal tables. This is the area where you can do the happy hour. The table sections you don't get happy hour ( I particularly did not like that). We ordered several tapas and everything was delicious. Papas bravas were great, the cheese plate had 5 different pieces of cheese and they give you a sheet of paper explaining each. A flight of cava was $12. There is also outside seating. Very good. The restaurant opens at 5 pm. The prices are ok but of course the more tapas you order the more expensive it gets. We were 4 adults and 2 kids and the bill was $267 ( with tip). They included the tip so keep your eyes open.

Authentic Tapas

By TS D |

Anyone who has traveled to Austin the last few years knows about the explosive growth south of downtown. At one time it was lined with cheap eats and the obligatory Birkenstock crowd, but not anymore. Restaurants like Barlata, on South Lamar, have moved the high-end, late night dining crowd out of busy downtown and across Lady Bird Lake. If you want to impress a first date or a good friend from out of town go for Happy Hour and split the wonderful Tapas menu. I took my wife and we shared plates of Spanish olives (the big green ones) and Chorizo, one too many glasses of red wine, and the Paella Barceloneta (seafood paella). I think we got out of there for about $80 and it would have been a bargain at much more than that. I have been visiting Austin for over 15 years and I vote Barlata the Best Tapas restaurant in town.

Big rep, average experience

By ronatygress |

The friend I went with told me this place is hot and happening. If so, I don't know why. We went for happy hour and had food and drinks. Everything was ok, but not amazing. Our waitress seemed overworked, my beet/arugula/goat cheese salad had barely any beets or goat cheese, and the paella was gummy. It was also sort of on the noisy side. I'd go back again, but early when it isn't busy. Maybe the service and noise level will be better and the food will feel less rushed.

Tapas for Brunch

By MitchytheKid |

We went on the recommendation of a friend. Saturday brunch. It was most excellent. we sampled a wide variety from the menu. Various egg dishes and traditional paella choices. All with a great Spanish flavor. And, the pancakes are some of the best I have had. Our waiter was happy we ordered them, and we were not disappointed. We were there for Saturday brunch, and I believe the menu is different on nights and weekdays, but I will return.

Good but expensive

By Barbara M |

Was recommended by my host. Went on a Friday night and restaurant was full. Sat at a communal table, which provided a festive atmosphere, especially since I was a solo diner. Service attentive, food good but expensive. I ordered a small paella and glass of wine, no dessert. Overall, a fun experience. Bill including tip was $40.

small plates food

By J E |

Ate here on a week night with a girl friend. Small plates type of place. A bit loud and was difficult to hear my friend who was just across the table from me. Staff was nice and friendly. Helpful since the menu isn't something you see every day. The Tuna had a nice presentation. It was in an old school tuna can. It was cute. Overall everything we had was good. We spent $180 for six small plates, bottle of wine and tip. Has the cool vibe going for it. I will probably bring my husband back to try the food but not for a quiet romantic night. A bit too loud and busy for that. Free parking on the side of the restaurant.

Tasty morsels on the costly side

By tony_in_san_jose |

Well crafted imitations of Spanish tapas presented in fun creative ways. The food is delicious but the portions are small (even for tapas), which is why I consider it on the costly side. Good wine selection and friendly service.

Another YUMMY evening out

By Ang S |

This adorable restaurant is located in the up and coming hot area of SoLa (South Lamar!). Parking can sometimes be tricky, but because we arrived at 5:30, we were able to park in spots beside the building, designated for Barlata and the surrounding retail areas. As usual, you get a warm greeting at the door and a nice young man "welcomed us back" and attended to our drinks immediately. Our server, Maleah was a lovely, professional, warm, helpful employee. She did a great job asking questions of the types of wine my husband enjoyed in order to suggest one of Barlata's wines for him. She was spot on! She laughingly encouraged us to try something different from our previous visit, because that have LOTS that is good. I, however, always tend to fall back on what I really enjoyed. 😁 The variety of small dishes is always exciting. This time around we had: * Romescada Scallop, whole shrimp & mussels w romesco * Grilled shitake mushrooms, glazed e sake, Marin & adobo * Arrosejat de gambes - fried rice paella w gulf shrimp * Duck legs w prune sauce * Fire roasted shishito peppers * Grilled chorizo riojana - w garbanzos and chimichurri Probably a bit much for two people - our eyes were bigger...you get it. The longer the evening goes on, the more popular this place gets. It's so worth it!

Yummy Tapas to be Found Here

By writegirl7 |

A-OK tapas in Austin. Went a few weeks back with a co-worker (we were working an exhibit at SX.) The space is clean, sleek and very inviting. Our waitress was a little cold toward the beginning, but warmed up by the end of the meal. The lobster salad was just average. Not a ton of lobster or flavor and the market price is higher than what's listed on the menu online. I'd highly recommend the beet salad, lamb empanadas and beef short ribs - those were killer.

Saturday Brunch.... Delicious!

By Liz A |

Cannot say enough good about the quality of the food and the service. Food was great. Wish we had a larger crowd so we could have tried everything on the menu! We had the pork belly tapas.... delicious I had the vegetarian paella.... delicious, and my dining companion had chorizo, potatoes, & eggs.... Which she said was delicious!

Like other fine TAPAS restaurants

By verycriticaltraveler |

The atmosphere and food were quite good but there was nothing that really wowed. It was very much like other tapas restaurants I've been to but a little less exciting than my favorites in Boston. Avoid the salad and asparagus. Go for the shrimp dishes, jamon, and the brisket cannelones.

Food is all good, friendly service, somewhat noisy

By CharlieinTexas |

Have not had a bad selection yet -- been 3x over a year or so time period. Try it all. Pace yourself, as if you order too many things at the same time it will all come out too close together. I thought prices were reasonable. Service attentive, servers know the menu, and are friendly (but not annoyingly friendly). When crowded it is noisy. Try to sit on the side if you want to minimize the noise; but can't avoid the noise no matter where you sit.

once again fantastic

when back to this restaurant as i was impress by my first experience , and once again i was delighted, excellent food, when for the brunch and there were some plates that were not serve at that time and the kitchen kindly made it for us, from scratch. food portion had increase witch is great also ,

I really don’t want to say to much about this fabulous restaurant but You must go and enjoy the experience especially on a Sunday night with flamingo dancers and 1/2 price on all the bottles of wine The food was excellent and super fresh and paired fantastically with the wine Pricing fair and the service very friendly and helpful

Great Tapas Bar in Austin

By Erin H |

I visited Barlata this past Monday night with 3 friends. The restaurant was featured on Bravo's Best New Restaurants so we wanted to give it a try. We sampled multiple dishes and had 2 bottles of Spanish red wine and a cocktail each for $98 per person. My favorite dish was the "tin can" with squid stuffed with sausage. The sauce was amazing and the dish was fabulous. Next, I loved the beef short rib Canelones. The lamb empanadas were good as well. Everything was really good. The only thing that I wasn't very impressed with was the Paella; we actually had the paella with noodles instead of rice and it was a little fishy tasting. All and all, it was a great restaurant with great food and service. I will definitely be back.

Loud but Amazing Food

By Shiba_fan |

This is a small restaurant and quite loud when it's busy, but it is worth the wait (if there is one) because the food is so delicious. They have plenty of vegetarian options, and certain items on the menu are seasonal and change fairly frequently. We had an amazing white cold gazpacho that was only on the menu for a short time. The vegetarian paella (hard to find a veg version of this dish!) is delicious. The brunch has lots of interesting options you don't find on other brunches. Everything is shareable, but some dishes are so tasty you will want it all to yourself!

Very good Tapas and wonderful service

By seenewthings |

If you like to dine, with very small plates and in a very noisy place this is the place for you. I would say this is more of a drinks and a small plate. You can get filled up if you order a lot of different plates which we did because we wanted to try it all . Food was tasty but very rich and some very oily. not many veggies. We have eating in Spain and we have had better Paella. But you do get a good taste of Spain. Wonderful service at the table, we did not eat at the bar they had a private party which was so loud! Go early or you will have a wait or book online. Parking is crazy.

Great food and fun atmosphere

By April C |

We have been a few times now and the food has been great. Drinks are a hit and the atmosphere is vibrant (meaning fun but loud!). Try the Sangria and don't miss the ahi tuna and the ham croquettes, they are amazing.

Great food, great staff

By omardlc |

I found this place by searching for a spanish restaurant using tripadvisor. Wife and I had been craving paella and were not disappointed. We had the Barceloneta Paella in small portion only we wished we would have chosen the larger. We also had the grilled flank steak with aswesome chorizo fries. Will definitely return to this spot.

Loved all of it !

By Nathali N |

Loved everything we ordered. We went with Spanish friends and they said everything was like eating in Spain. Would definitely go back .

Authentic Spanish tapas

By Lisa S |

My husband and I are never disappointed with dining at Barlata. Authentic tapas, nice wine list, good Sangria and fun cocktails are always on the menu. We usually get a few small plates and choose a paella to share. The service is top notch...attentive without being intrusive. Our only concern is that the place can be a bit loud with close-set tables on busier nights, but going on the earlier side or on a weeknight and asking for a quieter table works great. Last night we had a cozy corner booth which was just right for dinner and conversation. Highly recommend.

Funky and loud

By Scott M |

Decent food, we had octopus ink paella, which to me isn’t very tapas, they didn’t have a huge selection of small plates which I would have expected with a tapas banded place. Spanish seltzer water was a little salty which was a new experience.

Spanish cuisime in Austin

By Ronald B |

We went to Barlata Spanish Restaurant for dinner on our way back from the LBJ Ranch. Excellent Spanish food. Parking is limited, but after a short wait, we got a parking spot. For “tapas” we ordered fire roasted shishito peppers, patatas bravos, and calamaras fritos. For dinner we had Paella Barlata, Fideum negre, and peach salad with serrano ham.

Date night

This is a great place super fun vibe... Really enjoyed the communal bar tables ... Paella is fantastic and great wine reasonable price too

Pleasant Surprise!!!

By Tim N |

Barlata is a casual dining establishment that serve great Tapas. This restaurant was definitely a pleasant surprise. Waitstaff was friendly and food was fantastic. I would highly recommend the squid ink rice paella.

4.5 :)

By AJ S |

loved this place, we had so much fun, and the basque rose was so perfect! our server at the bar was fantastic and friendly, the food was great and portion sizes great for sharing, and was the closest i've EVER had to authentic tapas in the US. if the noise level had been fixed with some dampers in the ceiling i'd give it a 5!

Good Food but Slightly Overpriced

By Maranda C |

I went to Barlata's for the first time to meet some friends for Happy Hour. We ordered several tapas off the menu to split. We tried the veggie paella, Jamon Iberico, Ceviche, and Roasted Chicken. Everything was good, but at the end of the night I spent $100 and went home and had a bowl of cereal because I was still hungry. The atmosphere was good, the restaurant is nice and in a good location, and the drinks good. I will say the Coffee Caramel ice cream for dessert was fantastic! But overall, just be prepared to spend a lot on a little. Good times, but not the best value.

Good Tapas

By yomofo10 |

The Patatas Bravas were delicious. The tortilla wasn't bad. We also had the paella, which comes with seafood like you would get in Spain. What we ate didn't taste terribly authentic, but it was pretty good. It was also a bit pricey. After not having Spanish Tapas in so long, they tasted really good!

Tasty small plates and tapas

By Rosemary W |

There are a lot of excellent, interesting choices in the menu. Be aware that the tapas plates are very small, which makes it possible to try more things, but also means that you may need to order more than one of the same thing if you are with a group. We had patatas bravas, calamari, an octopus dish, and a couple of other things I don't quite remember. Everything was quite good.

Nice place to hang out with friends

By RockZ |

My first visits and I was truly impressed with the ambiance. Good for dates, double dates and just to hang out with close friends. They have free parking that is convenient. The appetizers are great but a little pricy for the portion sizes. Everything we tried was very good; the lobster paella was so so; could use a little thicker layer of rice :)

Huge disappointment

By Sherry S |

Perhaps I was spoiled by Curate, in Asheville, where I would be happy to dine every single night and where every dish was an OMG moment. I had heard such good things about Barlata, and the best thing I can say about it was that I was completely underwhelmed. We shared about 5 dishes, and not a single one was outstanding, let alone memorable. Aside from the patatas bravas, which had a nicely seasoned tomato sauce and were well-prepared, a mushroom dish "en lata" described as prepared with pine nuts and currants was dull; a shrimp dish that was sent complimentary for some reason came nice and sizzling in the fry pan, but had nothing other than that to recommend it; the boquerones was interesting to look at, but lackluster; the chopped bits of spinach on a flatbread with chorizo were the only part of the dish that recommended it. We left half the mushrooms and a couple of pieces of the flatbread. I will say that portions are large so good for sharing, but, honestly, I wouldn't go back.

All the deliciousness in one place!

By Dorina |

This place had SO much good food! I think our table ordered everything but let's start with what I ordered. Duck leg with pine nuts and raisins - delicious, beer braised pork belly - delicious, Tortilla Espanola - delicious. My friends ordered the mushrooms - delicious, the anchovies with apples - delicious, paella - delicious, a bunch of other stuff - all delicious. I think you see the idea here. It's a little pricey for tapas but I think that's standard across American tapas restaurants. Definitely worth a trip with a big group of friends.

Happy Hour Tapas

By Lynne M |

We've been trying everything in our week in Austin.Love tapas,so I heard Barlata was good.We were there early, around 5:00 for Happy Hour. There was no wait, and they gave us a table by the bar(there are 2 tables,in addition to the bar,for happy hour). We tried several tapas,shrimp/octopus ceviche(it had a cocktail shrimp sauce),really good.Mussels, also a nice different broth with 2 little tiny pieces of crostini.Cheese plate with a fig spread(yummy), and pork ribs with sweet and sour.Everything was good,no complaints.Service was alright,at first it wasnt crowded, then we had a few different servers when it got busy.Prices were very reasonable too

Almost as good as being in Spain

By Chris B |

Wow. I've spent a little time in a few tapas places in Spain (mostly Madrid, and a couple in Granada), and I have to say, this is ALMOST like being there. So much so, that I kind of wanted to ask "La cuenta, por favor", at the end of the night, but I didn't. My wife and I went for dinner and being that we were there during happy hour (5pm-7pm), we opted to sit by the bar and just eat from the tapas / happy hour menu. It was very nice to have lots of items off the menu, and in small enough servings that you got JUST enough. Ok, I could have used a double serving of the oxtail, but that's how tapas are - appetizers, not full meals. The prices for the tapas were slightly higher than what you'd pay in Spain, but really not that far off. If anything, some of the "happy hour" drink prices were - $12 for a fig old fashioned (I love old fashioneds, and figs, so I had to try this. It was pretty good, but $12? Meh). I noticed several reviewers mentioning that the bar is quite loud, and I have to agree. Really, that's my only complaint. And, it's not the patrons that were loud, but the music. All in Spanish (which was to be expected), but deafeningly loud. My wife and I almost had to shout over the music to be heard. We were there early, so I can only imagine when the place is full, and EVERYONE is yelling, it must be difficult to bear. All in all, a great experience, and my wife and I agree that we'll have to make this a regular spot for us. Can't wait to go back!

Surprise find...and a keeper!

By manuel_c_onIG |

We found Barlata by accident really - and were sceptical at first as every possible time slot on OpenTable was available (we later found out that the restaurant doesn't block a lot of tables, so that made sense!) - but just walking towards it, we got our hopes up. We smelled the place. Well, the food. And it smelled...delicious. Upon entering, we quickly noticed that about 85% of the tables were occupied...and folks were enjoying their food! Encouraged, we sat down, ordered a Milk & Honey and a Mai Tai...and then a little bit of everything. While a very modest dish, the bravas are to die for! The pork belly, chorizo, braised oxtail, and lobster paella were also delicious. Service was pretty spot on, the drinks well made (aka not watered down) and the restaurant just had a great vibe. What we loved about this place, aside from the food, was the fact that you can go there on a date night just as well as a fun dinner with friends or family. Definitely a keeper! Can't wait to go back for brunch.

Paella in Austin

By Joey M |

Casual dinner with my wife and she wanted paella. Wait staff friendly, paella was very tasty, but not a very big portion for the price.

Wine should arrive before the main meal is finished.

By Deuteronomy-the-cat |

We came here for our 23rd wedding anniversary so I really wanted to like this place but they really messed up with the wine and speed of service. We had the flight of sherry with our starters and then ordered a bottle of wine before the main courses were about to arrive. ... the waiter did not recommend our choice and suggested we reconsider. The first few main courses arrived as we waited for the waiter to accept our revised choice. ... and we waited. The second round of mains arrived before we could attract the waiter’s attention (the water waiter was most attentive and called the waiter over for us - this guy was great). ... and still we waited. We finished our meal ... and we waited a little more. ... eventually the waiter arrived and apologized (as we had clearly finished eating) and the bottle of wine had still not arrived. In the end we bailed on the wine as we could not face waiting any longer. In summary: this is a great place to go to if you are driving or are perhaps a struggling with alcohol issues ... but not ideal if you would like a nice bottle of Rioja with your meal. 😃😃

a Must do in Austin

What an amazing experience at this little gem. We had an amazing brunch during our ACL weekend. Lovely to meet the owner and she really went out of her way to make us feel welcome. 😊

Terrific Tapas

By beatstew |

Had a High School Graduation Party at Barlata's and it was great. The food was fantastic and there was a large selection. The service started out a bit harried but turned-out to be very good. Everyone enjoyed the place and had fun. I would definitely return. Check it out!

Fabulous tapas and paella!

By Isil D |

Incredibly delicious tapas and paella, and great wine selection. The service is also very good and the ambience is quite edgy!

Ya gotta Barlata

By markstorey |

Oh, my were we ever wowed by the small plates and incredible paella at Barlata! I didn't know noodles could replace rice in paella and I was skeptical because I had spaghetti the night before and wasn't sure I wanted noodles again. Wow, my noodle-stereotypes were blasted by the short, almost crispy noodles that served as a base for one paella. I'll definitely have this one again! Oh, and did I mention that a huge prawn served as garnish? Mmmmm. I can't say why we haven't been to Barlata before now, but I can confidently say we'll be back soon, and many times to come!

Food disappointing

By Doghirch |

We ordered three dishes. The shrimp were tough and not seasoned. The Brussels sprouts were overly salted. The spinach with mushrooms and lentils tasted delicious. It was a surprise. Due to change in management they were under staff but the waiter did a great job being solo and the hostess helped. The food was disappointing.

Busy Happy Hour

By Kyllito |

Food, drinks, and desserts were all tasty and flavorful. Proteins in the food were so tender, whether they were mussels in the paella, calamari fried or in the paella, and the oxtail with red wine sauce. If you are going for happy hour, it gets super busy early and the HH prices are only good at the bar. Friends who had the milk and honey rum cocktail said it was the best rum drink around. For something different, try the Cynat Mint cocktail.

Best tapas and paella in Austin

By Edward Z |

Barlata Tapas Bar has the best tapas and paella in Austin. The owners are from Spain and certainly know how to make a great variety of tapas. We tried 10-12 different plates and they were all awesome, very fresh and with great sauces. The paella was the best we have had with just the right spices and done to perfection. The wine list features delicious Spanish wines. The service is great. I highly recommend the restaurant.

A place to come back to an explore the menu

By VIEQUESBEACHBUM |

Great Spanish Tapas, with combinations of spices that are really well done. My wife and I ate here for dinner for the first time over labor day weekend. I have eaten Tapas in Spain and I must admit as others have that some of the plates are small, with others being adequate. You can run up a big tab here really quickly, so you must study the menu and ask questions. Our waiter was very helpful in walking us through some of the plates The Ham is of course the shining star here so do not hesitate on any pork dishes. The potato disk was awesome, but the lamb was tough. this is the kind of place to come and have fun dining, trying new and different things on the extensive menu. Keep in mind happy hour is at the bar and not at table service, we did not know that when we made the reservation for 6:30, nor did they say that until we sat down. At that point a bit awkward so I was a bit unhappy. They do allow you to bring wine with a $20 cork fee and i would recommend that as the wine prices are high.

Great place for tapas!!

By HARC |

the black paella was awesome, nice taste and delicious. Went with my family for the first time with good expectations and we were all impressed by the service, the kindness and the great dishes they offer. We enjoyed the patatas bravas, gambas al ajillo, and iberic ham. It is in a nice and modern location that reminds you Spain and the sign of the restaurant with the colors you fell in a vibrant place! Don't miss desserts!

Tapas Date Night in Austin

By tsdouglas48 |

If you’re downtown and mobile, you may want to try Barlata on South Lamar. It’s a five-minute ride from downtown and well worth effort. The crowd is sophisticated, the restaurant well appointed, and the food is delicious. The experience reminded me of the first time I took a date out for real sushi in NYC, and how much fun we had exploring dishes we had never tasted before. Well, this could be your great Tapas date night. We missed happy hour, where everything seemed to be half-off, but that didn’t stop us from trying the tasty Spanish olives and cheese plate or the diet-busting Gambas Al Ajillo (shrimp in garlic butter) and, my favorite, Paella Barlata. You can’t go wrong if you’re looking for a fun place to be social and enjoy authentic Spanish food.

A trip to Spain--in downtown Austin

By 1234texas |

As members of the Chaîne des Rôtisseurs Austin, we get to try out some of the new places in town (which has many fine restaurants) soon after they open. Barlata has been open for about 4 months and has already gained a good reputation--deservedly so! They put on a special event for us with 12 different items from the menu. The food/wine was excellent and the service good. The decoration is modern--very nice. This is a fun place for groups of people to share food (small plates) and stories--we really liked it and will return!

Nice selection of tapas!

By JackieCombina |

This was an unexpected find. Very cute place, great variety of food options and nice wine list. I thought the food and service were great. Some portions were small but not a huge deal. This is a great place to bring a large group and share a bunch of things!

Great food, great atmosphere, and great service!

By Noah V |

Came here with some roommates and was not disappointed! I would definitely suggest getting a pitcher of sangria and cheese platter to start your meal. Every dish we order was delicious. I recommend getting the paella dish with squid ink!

Our Repeat Spot in Austin

By Joe H |

We generally like to try new spots to eat in Austin. The dining scene stays fresh and there’s always old classics we have yet to discover. Barlata doesn’t fall into either of those categories. We love to come back here again and again. Patatas Bravas, Croquettas, Gambas, Brussels sprouts y Sangria son nuestros favoritos. Great atmosphere with a nautical theme, love their happy hour deals, and they have Easy Tiger bread too! If you are asking yourself whether to go to Barlata, you should be asking when.

Great South Austin Spot.

By Amy M |

I have been here a handful of times since they opened and then a few times recently. Current food, experience and atmosphere are top notch. Escolar is to die for, and nothing disappointed.

Good Service, Enjoyable Vibe, But only Okay Food...

By Richard F |

I have to say, I'm a little surprised by my experience at Barlata. It's well reviewed in general, the cookbook is very good, and Spanish Tapas rock... so what went wrong? Basically, the flavors didn't pop for me. I went with a good friend from the office who wanted to try the restaurant after cooking several recipes from the book. Getting a mid-week reservation was easy enough, and so off we toddled after a long day at the office. Service was actually very good (it's funny, because some people here have complained, but we liked our waiter a lot), and we were quickly drinking a pitcher of Sangria. Good, not life changing, but good. We then quickly went for Tapas, starting with a pretty broad variety of the offerings. Seasoning was very hit or miss. The Patatas Bravas under-seasoned, the Brussel Sprouts well over... this repeated over a couple of dishes. The Coca was topped by "smoked pork belly" but I couldn't taste the smoke; it didn't add much to the dish at all. We closed out the meal with a cocktail, which was very good; a fig-infused old fashioned, if I recall. Overall, my visit was disappointing. I *really* want Barlata to do well as I liked everything about it except the food itself. Spanish food should really pop and sparkle, and at least the night we went, it didn't do either.

Tapas, paella, lots of great choices!

By John S |

Ambience, great Spanish Foods! They use the best ingredients for their dishes, and preparation is usually great! Only bad experience was the octopus....very dry, think it sat in the window, too long. But have been multiple times, so once is not bad.

Tapas for Days

By BeachLover699 |

We visited this restaurant on a very busy Friday night with our son and his girlfriend. We did have reservations. The place was rockin'. I enjoyed the Sangria very much. I am very picky about a good Sangria, so I suggest trying it. The various tapas that we ordered were very good. My favorite was the vegetarian paella. We ordered it because my husband is allergic to shellfish. I am actually obsessed with how good it was. I would love the recipe. The boy's favorite was the oxtails.

What a joke !

By soyaNice |

Open a restaurant like this in Spain, nobody will go there ! Sounds probably goods for American people who never went to Spain, but as a European, I can tell you that this is barely average, and very very very expensive for what it is ! Waitress advised my friends only the thongs the most expensive, the plates are ridiculously small....I will stop there....

Great selection of Spanish foods

By lovelyone8888 |

I love this place....the food is amazing and waiters are knowledgeable and friendly. My only grip this last time is the romaine salad had WAY too much dressing on it and was a bit soggy. A small mistake at an otherwise wonderful Austin eatery.

Another excellent meal!

By CharlieinTexas |

Ate here tonight with my wife and mom. Early seating, less crowded, so less noise. Service friendly and knowledgeable. Prompt food delivery but not rushed. We all split sardines on flat bread with flash sautéed arugula, had the grilled shiitake mushrooms, Kale with garlic, pine nuts, and currants, and "Arros Negre" (seafood, black ink, paella). Excellent meal. Good value.

Authentic Tapas

By Abroad_with_Ash |

One of the most authentic tapas restaurants I have been to in Texas! The menu had so many items I enjoyed while in Spain. The location isn't exciting the the atmosphere is nothing to write home about, but the food and sangria is great! Go for a casual night out or dinner with friends!

Fun place with GF options

By PJB |

We took friends from out-of-town here for dinner and had a nice evening. The menu has a ton of options. You must be adventurous to eat here. Everyone in our party was happy to try new things. There was a separate GF menu for me, so my husband and I shared plates from the GF menu. The service was a little slow, and they did serve our GF espinaca tortilla plate with a large crouton on one side of it, so that was the reason for the one star reduction in my rating. The Arros Austin was fantastic - we will order a large plate next time!

No Spanish Tortilla

By Linda G |

The main reason I would go to Barlata was to order a Spanish tortilla, which is a potato omelette. This is a mainstay of a Spaniard's existence. They had it for several years, but when I was there in June 2019, the manager told me that they no longer make the main tapa of Spain, a Spanish tortilla. Great disappointment and I no longer have any reason to return to that restaurant.

Mix of American-Catalan cuisine

By Mingo V |

I had dinner here in June 2014 because I went looking for my stepson after studying a year in these lands, the restaurant is an acquaintance of mine from my city of my student days and I tried to see but he was not there. He has created a mixture of the two cuisines very interesting and funy as well as local .

Excellent Tapas

By Ned R |

Been to Spain several times and this very tasty representation of that style of food. We love ability to try multiple small plates. Sangrias solid as were other cocktails we tried. Ran out of room for paella which looked good-next time.

Pretty Authentic Experience

By Vera |

When you feel like Spanish food, but can't go to Spain, this is your spot. They have a nice bar seating and communal seating for their happy hour and regular tables if bar seating is not your thing. There is free parking in the adjacent garage, if all the spots on the side of the building are taken. They also have outside seating. I recommend showing up at 5:00 p.m., if you are coming for happy hour. Around 5:30 p.m., it started to get crowdy in the bar area. The food they served for happy hour is good and I recommend trying shrimp and octopus ceviche, fried calamari, daily paella, jamon serrano sandwich, lamb empanada, or onion blood sausage. I also really liked their happy hour white wine ($5/glass). The only negative comment would be the ratio of cost/portion. While they serve discounted food for happy hour and it looks like a really good deal, the portions are tiny. I mean really tiny (so not as good as it looks). If you compare it to what you can expect in Spain, the happy hour portions would equal to what you typically get for free in certain tapa bars in Spain with a drink order. In some places in Spain, even the free food came in much larger amounts than what they serve for $5-7. I really enjoyed the paella and expected a small portion, but for $7, it was smaller than small. We spent about $50 for 2 drinks and several tapas but did not leave full and I am not a big eater. Bar tender was nice, but she ordered a wrong thing for us, wrong sandwich and when we brought it up to her, there was no attempt to correct it. We thought that maybe they would comp it, but no, no such luck. Overall, I think we will be back, it was just not as good of deal as it looked.

fantastic food

this was a fantastic culinary experience , one of the best foods i ever tested , as close to slain as you can be from Austin , service was great , highly recommended , personal favorites croquetas and dessert hojaldre with fig ice cream

Great Tapas in Austin

By S7139VEjimg |

One of the best tapas places I have ever eaten at. Sangria with Tempranillo base & not the cheapest wine in the kitchen. Interesting menu items. We tried stuffed baby calamari, Spanish sardines, shrimp with garlic, paella Barcelona style, smoked salmon, a great plate of interesting cheeses. We lucked out: Tuesday is half price on all wines. Got a Tempranillo gran riserva for 30 bucks. Attentive, friendly service. Reasonably priced but so good we kept ordering more & more dishes.

WOW!

By pafuri |

We were visiting from South Africa, and love Spanish food- so we go to a lot of tapas restaurants! And Barlata rates right up there. Service was friendly and knowledgeable and staff and management passionate about their offering, and concerned with your feedback. Plus the daily specials are really worth hearing about. We had ham, cheese, mussels and pork belly- plus more- and every dish was really superb. Honestly we wished we could have gone back again, but sadly it was not possible. Portions are a fair size, and the food comes out quickly. But note, they get busy round 19h00, so if you want a quiet, leisurely dinner without too much buzz and noise, book early! Try it- it's fabulous!

Good food!

By Fernando F |

This is a beautiful place! Despite their bad logo (some fish bones), the place is nice. But that is now what matters te most.. The food was good, we had Brisket cannelloni, oxtail, Austin paella, Patatas bravas and ribs... everything was tasting good. They also have a good selection of wine, which is kinda pricy. Cons: hostess didn't seem to be concerd about being nice; none of the dishes were "to die for". .. Bottomline : no major flaws, but I couldn't find anything that would make me go back there the other day. However, I admit that this is hard to find and I would recommend this place.

Great Tapas in Austin

By Erik P |

A huge menus of Tapas. Everything on the menu looked great! We were very happy with our selections. Nice selection of wines and unique drinks. We had a very nicely priced Spanish wine. Very vibrant restaurant. The wait persons were very knowledgeable about the many selections.

Uninspired

By rustycat83 |

After hearing great things about Barlata we made a reservation on New Year's eve. They had a three course prefix menu with limited choices (about 4 selections in each category), so as a group we tried all the options. To a person we were unimpressed. While the dishes were okay, none of them were truly inspired, unique or best in class. Perhaps the regular tapas menu would prove better, but not sure we will be back for a second chance.

Favorite Austin Restaurant

By Martha E |

Barlata has become our favorite place to gather with friends or celebrate a birthday. Fun atmosphere, friendly and great service, and amazing food! Tonight we celebrated three family birthdays with a party of 11. This is a small plate restaurant but everything is so delicious. We started with the Shishito peppers, Bravas (potatoes with spicy tomato aioli, crispy on the outside and delicious!), torta espanola, and meatballs. Two orders of each for 12 to share. Everything was perfect. We then ordered the Gambas Ajillo, chorizo with squid ink (incredible!), two paella dishes - all were perfect. Seven more entree type dishes. Total of 19 for our table of 11. Six desserts were also ordered and they were excellent. After eating here over a half dozen times we recommend ordering a round of first courses to start with - about 3/4 of the number in your party. Then after you have nibbled, decide on about 1/2 that number for your next round. By then we have usually had enough but you can order another round if still hungry. This is the fun of a tapas restaurant!

Great brunch

By leo88copper |

This is our first time to visit and will not be the last one. Ingredients are fresh. We had two paella, Bartala and Arros negre (squid ink) and two tapas, lamb and arugula salad. All are delicious. It is a bit pricey but worth it.

Amazing!!

By Maura M |

If you're looking tapas in Austin, this is the place to go. Great quality food, equally as great service. Tapas are delicious and they offer traditional tapas as well as tapas with an interesting twist. I've never been disappointed here. Amazing!

Wonderful gastronomic experience.

By tinava |

This restaurant was not on my list of restaurant to try while in Austin, but my friend insisted. I am so glad we had dinner there. We ordered a bottle of wine and discussed the various dishes, before settling on a few. First the white anchovy served over pear slices and some delicious Spanish cheese (Idiazabal? Not sure) Perfect combination! I am usually very reluctant about mixing cheese with seafood, but this one worked. It added a touch of creaminess to the salty/vinegary anchovy. Next, raw Escolar fish served with a puree of roasted red, yellow bell peppers and eggplant. The fish simply melted in your mouth and the purees simply added different flavors to each bite. Then, Ceviche made with Shrimp/octopus/scallops in a citrus tomato based sauce. Good portion, fresh taste and plenty octopus (my fav). Also ordered Brandada. Baked salted cod and potato served in a flat pan. I will miss this dish. Very few restaurants know how to prep dry salted codfish. It was creamy, easy to spread on a toast and the balance of fish vs potatoes was perfect. Finally, had the grilled beef heart served with Israeli couscous. This too did not disappoint. The hart was tender and perfectly cooked. We would had ordered a few more dishes, but the portions were good and I was too full to be able to enjoy anything else. The service excellent, we were not rushed, nor pushed to order. The waiter kept an eye on us, but left us alone to enjoy the food, drink and conversation. I can wait to go back to Austin and try a few more dishes in this restaurant. Highly recommended
