This place rocks French Toast

By 3Cousins |

My husband and I heard about this place on "Chicago's Best" and thought we'd give it a try. The French Toast flight I ordered was really amazing, all different flavors were incredible. The savory dishes they offer for breakfast/brunch look amazing as well. My husband had the salmon benedict, very tasty. When I look back into the kitchen area the staff is smiling and happy to be working together. The service was great even though the place was crazy busy with an hour and a half wait if you didn't get on the list on line. I can't wait to go back!

Birthday

I went for my birthday and it was THE BEST!!! The food cane out fast. The wait for a table was pretty long, but everything else is great!!!

A delicious must

By Catrina C. |

I got the Executive steak and it was so delicious my hubby was jealous he didn't order it too. Made to absolute perfection. The french toast flavor of the week was my favorite cereal Cinnamon Toast Crunch and it too was amazing. There was a bit of a wait but definitely worth it. We just went down to the bar down the street grabbed a few mimosas there until they gave us a call that our table was ready. Very efficient. Bring your own champagne and they will bring you a ice bucket and orange juice. I wishhhhhhhhhhhh we could do this in Cali. Also, its a black owned business so I always try to support my people when I travel. 5 stars all around!

Best Breakfast in Chicago

By SueAnn2288 |

I was visiting my brother in Chicago for a few days, and like any other foodie, I scoped out some good restaurants. This was one of them and turned out to exceed my expectations. The place was very busy even thought it was during the weekday. We checked in and waited inside for about 10 minutes or so. After we were seated at our table, Terrika came by and greeted us and inquired if we had ever been there before. She told us about the specials, one of which was the french toast flight. We ended up getting it and did not regret it. It gives you the opportunity to sample their usual flavors plus their special. I thik my favorite was the lemon....or the mable butter blondie, I couldn't decide! Our omelettes were also superb. We were impressed with the exceptional service, especially considering how packed it was. There was not one time my glass of water was at less than 50%. I highly reccomend this place and if I am ever near Chicago, I will ensure to make a stop here!

the best breakfast

the french toast is so good and the fresh fruit is very taste. The different type of dish is great because you would never put together some of dish.

Superb Breakfast & Brunch

By Richie T |

I truly enjoy meeting with my best friend for breakfast here at least once a month. We definitely keep coming back because of the breakfast foods & great servers. Very casual environment, I have never been very big on sweets for breakfast but their French toast variety I’ve become obsessed with their breakfast foods!! I do advice though if your not an early riser be aware that it is a small place and the wait can be 30-45 minutes but I definitely think the food is worth the wait!!

Amazing brunch and excellent servide

By mossip27 |

Had the best breakfast/brunch of life at batter and berries. Excellent service from all the staff and delicious food - chicken Alfredo was amazing as was the French toast flight. If you’re in the area you need to eat here.

Best Breakfast on a Whim!

By kikionthefly |

Moments after learning that my flight home was delayed, I read about Batter & Berries on the Black Travel Movement Facebook page. Obsessed with making lemon drop martinis out of lemons, I dragged my luggage and made a detour to Batter & Berries. Friday mornings at 10am must be the sweet spot (for a party of one) as I was able to get in without having to wait. I sat at the large family style table in the center of the restaurant just behind the host desk and my eyes danced at all of the cool pieces on the walls. I smiled as I watch complete strangers have food orgasms with each bite. The service was great. The food was spectacular (that potatoe cheesy, hashy thingy gave me life) and I immediately began to dream about how quickly I'd be back. Coming back in August...with my son this time who drooled when I showed him the picture of my blissful breakfast. Enjoy!

A nice, weekday brunch

By Slayerzdude |

I’ve heard a lot of people rave about this place, so I was excited to give it a try. Overall, it was good, but I definitely wouldn’t have waited the hour+ I heard the wait is on the weekend. The deconstructed omelette was amazing, especially with a side of hot sauce. We also got the French toast flight which we okay, but didn’t blow me away. It was mostly just dry. The standouts were the caramel apple and the lemon which both had a lot of flavor. Service was okay, but the speed with which the food came out was the most impressive thing about the visit. Last thing (which is mostly just a pet peeve of mine) staff should NEVER be on their cell phones in front of guests. I would have given 5 stars otherwise, but that’s a deal breaker for me when it comes to service!

Very popular busy and delicious breakfast

By 159jodyg |

Restaurant was full but we were seated almost immediately. Food was excellent. We had blueberry French toast, traditional breakfast and shrimp fajita omelet. We shared among ourselves and agreed the French toast (which they are known for) was the best but the shrimp fajita omelet was delicious also with some of the best shrimp and seasonings I have had. Don't think you could go wrong with anything here. It is loud but the service is amazing and fast. Probably the best waiters we have had in a long time! Definitely worth a visit.

Friendly owner chats with us!

Very nice spot to have breakfast...cheery and friendly...delicious food! The owner noticed our 4 year old twin girls and came over & chatted with us...very friendly...we enjoyed meeting him!

Delicious breakfast, and no wait on a Sunday morning!

By Matthew F |

I'm so glad we went for breakfast here! Looking at pictures before, we weren't sure, but it was all much better. I had the french toast flight and my wife had salmon bennies. So good! Highly recommend!

Long walk for regular waffles

By Kimmvel |

If you in town for a short trip I wouldn't recommend it. They have specialty plates that I'm not sure if they are suitable for breakfast, for example, jambalaya omelet.

Great Breakfast!

By T P |

Breakfast was great. We ubered from downtown to the Lincoln Park area to try this restaurant. We were not disappointed! The place is not really big so there may be a wait. It was only two of us so we didn’t have to wait long. If you are with a large party your wait may be longer. Everyone was very friendly!

Worth The Wait

By QTravelinMan |

We arrived on Friday morning and were it would be a 30min wait. We decided to walk around the area to pass the time. Gave our name and number and got a text after 20min to confirm if still planned to dine. 5min later got a call to let us know our table would be ready in 5min. We arrived and were promptly seated. The place was jammed packed. My lady ordered the Jambalaya Omelete and although I am a pancake man, I took our servers recommendation and ordered the 5 Flight French Toast with a side of Homemade Chicken Sausage. OMG, we were blown away by our tasty and flavorful meals. The chicken sausage was the Truth and the omelete had an equisite Cajun flaver ! It was easy to see why this place is so popular..the food is outstanding. Will check out again on our next visit to the Windy City.

Brunch with girlfriends

By Stephanie J |

This Black owned and operated restaurant boasts about their world famous French toast. I must say our flight of French toast was definitely delicious, filling, a flight to share, a nice variety of flavors! The Lobster Benny was interesting, the hollandaise sauce was a little too salty but the dish was good overall. The Roasted Chicken alfredo omelet was great, the sauce had a peppercorn flair, it was a large portion serve with veges as well. They had a variety of unusual teas which was excellent for me as I am a tea lover. The restaurant was small and there was a wait, but it was worth the wait. You can use the Yelp app to put your name on a waitlist, but not to make a reservation so to speak. The bathroom neat, could use some updating but it was clean. the atmosphere was amiable. Our waiter was awesome, he was patient explained the menu and the specials. He gave great recommendations. It was a great experience. overall.

Delicious Brunch.

By Lauretha B |

Batter and Berries was AMAZING! We throughly enjoyed our delicious meal. There was no wait, great server, the food specials were amazing and we got our food very quickly. We both had specials: creole omelet and Catfish platter. We had 1/2 orders of caramel champagne and caramel walnuts . EVERYTHING was delicious 😋. I highly recommend.

Great place for Brunch food.

By kavlamou |

I wish the place was close to home. Great food , service & quality. The presentation outstanding and the prices as expected. I already plan to revisit this place in May.

Brunch Tuesday morning

By Tim G |

We arrived about 11-11.30 and it was packed with a twenty minute wait. That time flew by and was def well worth waiting. Noisy, gregarious clientele, super, and I mean super polite and pleasant staff, and a great menu. We gave up our table to a young couple with a very new newborn and they were looked after very well. Again, nice to see. Food was excellent. You can expect to wait (for me a great sign that items aren't sitting stewing in the kitchen) but there are things to do that don't involve a phone so enjoy the ambience. Sweet potatoes waffles were a new one on me, and the cheesy hash browns (cheese?!) are something I'll try at home. and, try the hot sauce ....very much home made and tastes fresh and sharp. If (when) we are back in Chicago, we will return!

Best breakfast place to eat

By Trek739026 |

This place is known for there French toast. You don't even need to pour syrup to your toast. This place is very well known and is the only location in the city of Chicago.

Worth coming for the sausage gravy

By Hardeep N |

We had mixed experience here. On arrival, it was very busy so we were asked to come back in 30 minutes which we were fine with. After waiting however, we were very hungry so couldn’t wait to sit down, order and tuck in. I ordered the omelette, sausage, gravy cheese hash and my wife ordered the shrimp wrap with sweet potato fries. When they arrived, one of us was very happy and the other, not so much. The omelette meal was superb! The sausage was tasty, the gravy awesome and the hash was plentiful and pleasant. The wrap however arrived and my wife noticed immediately that in one half of the wrap, there was only ONE shrimp. Assuming that they may have all been placed in the second half, she opened both wraps up and found only another 2 pieces of shrimp. To the restaurants credit, they took the wrap back without any questions and arranged for a fresh one to be made. It arrived about 10 minutes later. But at this stage, I’ve finished my meal and my wife is now starting hers - so much for having brunch together. When the bill arrived - no discount or items removed. Nothing offered by way of comp drinks or dessert etc to apologise. Was slightly disappointed by this.

Amazing food

By Brownie |

This had to be one of the best places for breakfast I have ever visited. Had to get there early but it was worth the wait.

Delicious One-Of-A-Kind French Toast

By SeasonedFoodie |

It’s small, always crowded, and for a reason. The food is good! They’re known for their French toast flights: lemon, pecan, blueberry, strawberry, and a special for the super flight. They always have specials. The homemade chicken sausage and cheesy hash browns are scrumptious. I went with friends and also tasted the seafood egg white omelet. It was good, but it didn’t need the tomatoes. It’s BYOB, but you will have to buy some juice. If you get there by 8:30am, you’ll have no problem parking and shouldn’t have a long wait.

THIS PLACE IS A MUST VISIT!

By remomo |

The breakfast was amazing. We went twice during our stay in Chicago. It is very small with limited seating but the staff was nice and the food was terrific. "The French Toast Flight" was so good that I ordered it both times. You will not be disappointed.

Brunch with great friends

By NellyTito R |

I would of given this place 5stars but the waiting time was crazy 1hr 20min .. We also asked if we could get a cup of OJ since we had our Champagne and was shut down.. Finally we get a cup of water.. We finally get our table and Lesly our waitress was wonderful very knowledgeable and very nice... The food was good and presentation was lovely.. I wish they had a bigger place..

Don't Ask. Just Go!

By General_000 |

On a recent visit to Chicago, my wife and I had a long list of "must-do"s from friends and relatives. Batter & Berries was on that list. Now I'm telling you to put it on yours! We caught an Uber from downtown and had to wait 45 minutes to be seated but, let me tell you, it was well worth the trip and wait. Our host, Timothy, was excellent. He advised us on the menu and was attentive to us the entire time. Now, the moment you've been waiting for; The food is top-notch! I had a jerk pork chop with eggs and potatoes. She had the French Toast and pork pan sausage. It was all so good, I'm not embarrassed to say we stuffed ourselves silly! If you really want to have a breakfast experience and a great memory of your time in Chicago, PLEASE put this on your list of places you MUST visit. You will not be disappointed!

This place is delicious!!!

I have never had a bad experience here! The food is so good and the environment is vibrant! Do yourself a favor and check it out!

Top flight experience!

By susanM757DX |

The French Toast Flight was amazing! Friendly, efficient waitstaff. We waited for the weekday to avoid the weekend wait. But worth the wait even on the weekends! Excellent food!

Don’t waste your time or Tastebuds

By Peaches H |

We came to Chicago from out of town. We called this establishment 1 week prior to our arrival in an effort to best plan our itinerary. We specifically asked the hostess who answered the phone if this establishment took reservations or if they accepted “waitlist” from Yelp. We were told “no” to both options. The hostess said that it was “first come first serve” and we had to put our name on the list in person, only… Upon our arrival we did just that, only to find out that there was indeed a “waitlist” option via Yelp and that we could have joined the waitlist prior to our arrival. We waited for almost 2 hours for a table of 2. When we complained to the current hostess, no accommodation or apology was given for the misinformation we were provided. The hostess was informed that a poor review would be given they shrugged their shoulders and said ok. I do not recommend this place the poor service and the quality of food was definitely NOT worth the 2 hours that we waited. You would be better off going to McDonald’s..

Mid-Western Hospitality

By DGardJr |

Everything from the staff to the food was top notch. One of the staff members noticed that we were outside a little long for the wait and came out to inquire about our waitlist. Apparently something didn’t work correctly but she recognized that something wasn’t right and seated us immediately. The food was amazing, I had Lemon Pepper Lobster Omelet and my girlfriend had the French toast flight. Both totally amazing. I don’t remember my coffee or water ever being empty, they have a great system and cadence to ensure the customers are being taken care of. The seating can be community which some don’t like but I don’t mind. I wanted to eat the chicken and waffles from my neighbor, I’m sure he couldn’t have finished it all. Highly recommended!!!!

Chicago visit

By Stacey B |

This is a great place to eat in Chicago. It was packed the entire time. The wait was insane, but it was worth it. I had a shrimp wrap with shoe string sweet potato fries. Great meal.

A Chicago must when in town

By Jim Beck |

Amazing every time. Their French toast flight is amazing. Ask about the daily specials we’ve had a lobster omelette, and chicken Alfredo omelette.

Amazing food!

By Karen B |

Food was delicious I had the apple cinnamon waffle I thought the price was high for 5 slices of apple and one large Belgian waffle. The food everybody else had was huge and the price seemed right. All the food was amazing and the staff was awesome so very friendly! Well worth the trip! Not a lot of seating so plan for a wait.

Weekday brunch

By MoandMari |

Amazing food! Even during the week there is still a line at this place! But it is worth it! If you can leave your name and a cell phone run an errand and come back; it’s perfect! I have been here a few times, the food it’s always great! Don’t forget to check the board for specials. Service needs polishing, ask questions, English may not be their first language, they will get help if they need! It’s still worth it!

No breakfast "classics" but good nonetheless

By Megan K |

We recently had breakfast here (during the week) while on a trip to the city. Because it was a weekday I'm sure, we had no trouble getting a table and were seated right away. It was still a little busier than I would've expected, but service was quick and attentive. We never ran out of water! I was a bit disappointed they had no "classic" French toast option — only various flavored ones. So I instead switched to their biscuits and gravy (with eggs and cheesy hashbrowns). The eggs were cooked well and hashbrowns delicious. I wasn't a fan of the gravy. It was basically soup and it was a served in a bowl with the biscuits floating in the middle. It had good flavor but it was weird, and I wouldn't call it gravy. My husband had an omelet, which he also really liked, but it seemed like all the fillings were just thrown on top, which isn't exactly what either of us expected. They also have iced tea on their menu, but apparently no longer carry it. (At least that's what the server said.) Long story short, if you're looking for unique breakfast items, this is probably a good stop. Prices are a little high (though definitely in line with similar brunch places); we just felt the food didn't really meet our expectations.

An absolute MUST if you come to Chicago

By Inspire54272258320 |

Batter & Berries was the best meal we had while we visited Chicago. I'm so glad we went. I'm still dreaming about it. You can't miss it. It's a short walk off the Diversey train stop in Lincoln Park, just off the brown line. There menu is amazing, I wish I lived closer so I could go back and try more of their dishes.

Siblings lunch

This food was excellent and although I have heard about the waiting time I the past. We were seated in a reasonable amount of time.

Too busy don’t bother

By Nicole0611 |

We went on a Monday at 11:30. The wait was over an hour, the place is so tiny. People are sitting on top of each other. There is no food that is worth that long of a wait in uncomfortable conditions.

Amazing!!!

By Tara7772 |

This place was amazing! The waiting list was 2 hrs to get inside because of how amazing the food is. We put our name on the list and we went exploring the area. The restaurant called us when a seat was available. Once inside our waiter was amazing. He told us jokes and riddles as he checked on us frequently while we waited for our food. The wait for the food was 1 hour because they had new chefs in the kitchen. We didn’t mind waiting at all. After our 3 hour wait for food, the time had come to finally eat. The food was worth the wait! That maple butter on the French toast was out of this world. I will definitely go there when I’m in Chicago again!

Yes, it's ok.

By dcostopoulos |

Ok. Yes, just Ok. Busy, packed weekend mornings (did not visit during the week but I am guessing busy as well)!!! Long wait times!! If you are lucky enough to get a table for you and your party, good. If not, be prepared to sit at the large group table with 6 - 10 of your newest friends and discuss what everyone has or is going to order. Also, limited waiting space so plan on a little window shopping in the area. Here is my quick recommendation: Get their "special of the day" french toast sampler. Why? Because like I said to start this off, everything about B&B is just that, ok. At least with the sampler you can say you tried one creation that no one else did. B&B not worth the wait. Am I going back? I will drive past and drop off my gf at the door. If she waves to come in, I will go park because that means we can get a table. If she comes back to the car, there is a wait. Again, let me reiterate... "ok".

Busy place, wonderful food!

By AZtoNC1 |

We came for a late breakfast on a Friday morning - the place was super-busy and there was a 30-40 minute wait (will know next time to check in on the website). The French Toast Flight was a delight, and our server was friendly and attentive. Will definitely return!

Lunch

By Ang P |

Excellent, large servings! I had the breakfast wrap with chicken sausage, shared this with my daughter while she shared her strawberry French toast with me!! Yummy!

Worst Cappuccino Ever

By Alex Vera |

The service was good, the server very friendly, we ask for 2 oat milk cappuccinos, they’re with no coffee flavor, only milk. We asked for an extra espresso shot, it wasn’t a espresso flavor. They charged in a total of $16 for the cappuccino and we can’t drink it. Horrible flavor. The Lemon French Toast were very good.

Best Birthday Brunch Ever!

By Tawanda-Grace |

We found this place by word of mouth! 2 1/2 hour wait. Worth every second! The Food arrived Jimmy John's Fast and it was good. I mean Good- Good. Came to the Windy City from Detroit to celebrate my Birthday and Batter and Berries was the icing to my cake. The service amazing. The waiter "Come See Me" was Phenomenal he was knowledgeable and attentive. If you are in the area you MUST try this restaurant and ask for Mr.CSM. French Toast Flight best thing I had the entire weekend.

wonderful experience

By Frag |

our time at this restaurant was filled with warmth, good food, and great company It was a perfect start to our Chicago adventure, and we look forward to returning in the future

French toast lovers beware!

By crashleyrogers |

This place was fantastic. It is very small and can get quite noisy, but it is well worth it! The french toast was the best i have ever had! We went Sunday morning. I would recommend calling ahead or getting there when they are just opening. It can become quite busy. The food was extremely delicious! They also delivered it very quickly which was a huge relief after waiting 45 mins. The service was great! Our server was very attentive. I would definitely recommend this place! Just FYI it is BYOB. We were a tad disappointed when we couldn't get mimosas but the coffee helped wake us up for the long day ahead :)

Soooo delicous!!

By jodiel68134 |

Our waitress at the hotel recommended this breakfast place and OMG it was soo good! I had the lobster eggs benedict, my husband had the "Moving On Up". The cheesy hashbrowns are out of this world. The lobster eggs benedict absolutely phenomenal and my husband was about to lick his plate clean!! AMAZING!!

That maple butter...

By LADONNA G |

The first visit, I had bisquits and chicken sausage gravy with strawberry French toast. Every bite was amazing!!! The second visit, I had the Lemon pepper Lobster with strawberry French toast and I wanted to lick the plate!!! The staff is nice and friendly! Yes, the wait is long but is well worth it!

French toast flight definitely worth the calories

By skatermom59 |

Wonderful breakfast place in Lincoln Park. Busy on a Monday morning. Excellent service. French toast flight was excellent. Lemon was outstanding. Also had the jambalaya omelette that was spicy and really flavorful. Hash browns also very good. Highly recommend

Food is a 5!

By Anna A |

The food is a 5 but I had to rate them a 4 due to the unpleasant hostess. My husband & I try to get out there at least once a month and everything is usually great. Unfortunately this last visit (8/5/18) there were 2 young ladies in the front. One was very polite, but the other one was pretty rude to my husband. I'm not sure if she was overwhelmed and/or having a tough day but she was definitely unfriendly. Everyone else was great including our waitress Jessica. The lobster omelet & french toast flight are a fav!

A Unique approach to Chicken & Waffles

By wilsonderekw |

My wife and I have been on a quest to locate the best "chicken and waffles." As of today "Batter and Berries" has taken the crown. This quaint restaurant (located in Chicago's Lincoln Park neighborhood) provides you with a sweet potato waffle that includes chicken pieces (in the batter). Additionally, the maple butter topped waffle comes with a fried chicken breast topped with hot sauce. The savory, spicy, and sweet flavors mix well, and you actually don't have to use syrup. We were blown away by how Good this dish was. It was a lot of food, so we both had the remaining half for dinner. Great job "Batter and Berries!

Exellent french toast sampler platter

By sammied3000 |

Exellent french toast sampler platter. I loved this place and the surrounding neighborhood. They forgot to bring my shrimp omelet out with my French toast but eventfully they did; however, it was cancelled on my bill. I highly recommend this place.

French Toast Fantastic

By kendralarue |

Batter & Berries knows its french toast. I had the Caramel French Toast. It was very good. I tasted the special, the Champagne French Toast--it was awesome. So light, airy and whipped--perfect way to bring in the New Year. Also tasted the Lemon French Toast. It was good, but didn't top the Champagne or Caramel. Others at my table had the Cluck & Gravy and Strawberry French Toast. I didn't taste either, but they each seemed very pleased. This place is small and draws a crowd. I find most Chicago brunch spots (that aren't chains) go for the smaller spaces. (1) Optics---always looks full which in and of itself draws in people and (2) rent/leasing space costs have to be balanced with hours of operation. If the spot is truly brunch only, the hours are reduced, thus considerations for partial work days must be weighed. In other words, if you are looking for a quick wait and to get in and out, you should arrive early. Otherwise, prepare to wait. Check in and go run errands, or go up the block to Rotofugi Designer Toy Store and kill some time.

AMAZING!

By Jeanine S |

So! 6 of my girlfriends and I came to visit after a reservation to another black-owned reservation was canceled unreasonably. The manager allowed us to join last minute. He was very patient and accommodating. You would have thought the staff would have been rushing us out and making us feel unwelcome, but that was far from what we experienced! Everyone was delightful, fun and professional! And don't let me get into the food! I had the short rib and it was SENSATIONAL! There was not one to-go box needed, because we all enjoyed our food so so so so so much! I haven't been in years, but I have fallen in love with this restaurant all over again and will be back to join with others soon! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

Don’t bother with Batters and Berries

By Arthur458 |

I can not figure out why this restaurant gets such positive reviews. There is no reason to wait 45 minutes or more to eat here. The breakfast items ( such as French Toast Flite) sound great but are really ordinary ... two pieces of thin brioche French toast split in two with a couple pieces of fruit, and a sauce or butter that is not memorable. The restaurant is narrow, crowded and noisy. The only redeeming feature is the friendly staff.

Something new

By keidra01 |

After many referrals we decided to venture out from the downtown area and try this for breakfast. The flight of French toast was good. And the ham was just right. The surf and turf biscuits were just ok but I’m from Louisiana so creole here isn’t quite the same. All in all it was a good meal.

Worth the wait.

By SDot313 |

This place is notorious for having a really long wait and you can't make reservations. Came here for breakfast an a Friday morning around 9:30am and it was packed. Thankfully our wait time was about 5 minutes and we were a group of 6. The food here is amazing and comes out fairly quick. Another nice thing about this place is ots very affordable. The wait staff is great; friendly, helpful and always ready to serve. If you have the time & some patience definitely stop by. It's so worth it.

Best Breakfast fix in Chicago

By Brian |

after a night of partying, best way to recover is to have brunch at Batter & Berries! had the steak omelette and a variety of french toasts! all yummy and filling!

Heat the plates!

By Sandra_BT_Hannon |

Sweet server. Menu explained well. Food beautifully presented and arrived relatively quickly. Coffee refills plentiful. My french toast was cold which rather detracted from the experience- was still tasty tho. My partners steak was good he says. Customers arrive non-stop which is fascinating- many turned away as the place was mostly filled to capacity- time for a franchise guys! Acoustics are terrible here- we could barely hear each over the general noise. Not sure if its worthy of the top Chicago breakfast spot?

Long wait, worth it!

By Lindsay J |

Definitely use Yelp to get your name on the wait list ahead of time. We did that as we left our hotel ... still probably waited longer than it told us we would, but if a wait is that long all these people can't be wrong, right? I got one of the specials - roasted chicken on top of an omelet w/ broccoli, tomatoes and topped with Alfredo sauce and a side of cheesy hash browns. I would never have ordered that on my own but our server suggested it (said it was his favorite). I'm so glad he did!!! Wow, so delicious. My daughter got the pancakes. They weren't anything too special... so I would definitely skip those and go another route!!

Can not recommend this place enough

By JamesIN |

Batter and Berries is 100% worth a visit. We went for brunch, had looked at the menu in advance and all pretty much decided what we were having until we arrived and our server Tim went through the specials - Wow! The food and all the team here are awesome thank you so much for your hospitality.

Just too good

By Uday M |

We went there along with friends for late night dinner and it was really awsome ! We had to wait for some 30 mins in que and then we started with appetisers. Loved food for little more expense

Rich Breakfast

By revlisad |

We were seated quickly on a Thursday morning. The food was delicious but very rich. Many meals came with one or more sauces. Consider sharing a poutine with pulled pork. They are known for their French toast so be sure to ask about their special. Very attentive staff. Bright, happy decor. Tight seating. Vegetarian options. Breakfast, lunch, brunch.

Worth the Wait

By amehen23 |

This was our second time at Batter & Berries. Both times were outstanding food & service. Both times the wait was approximately an hour or so but well worth the wait. The brisket hash was amazing both times. The ribeye omelet & breakfast wrap were also great. Both times our servers were awesome. I would eat here every day if I could.

one of my faves

By msdanistravel |

I love batter and berries! Byob and a french toast flight some sort of awesome omelette and great staff and ambiance! One of my fav places to eat in the city!

Movin' on up to the Big Time

By Taylor B |

The Doc knows what she's doing. How's this for a breakfast thriller? A seven-ounce Linz Heritage Angus ribeye steak with grilled onions and mushrooms, cabernet sauce, two scrambled eggs and B&B cheese crusted hash browns? Or your choice of French toast--blueberry, strawberry, lemon or caramel? Or a banana-walnut Belgique waffle? This is the kind of breakfast you want to wake up to, right? You can find it at Batter & Berries, a bright and spiffy cafe with creative pancakes, omelets and other breakfast treats. Located at 2748 North Lincoln Avenue, south of Diversey, Batter & Berries is the brainchild of Dr. Tanya and Craig Richardson and chef Ken Polk. Open from 8 to 3 Friday through Monday and 9 to 2 Tuesday through Thursday, it offers a different but definitely delicious approach to breakfast, plus sandwiches and lunch fare. My wife and I were tipped off to this culinary caper by a DePaul University administrator who usually starts her day at B&B. I couldn't resist the ribeye with onions, mushrooms and hash browns. My wife chose the strawberry French toast with house-made sausage and hash browns. It's a great way to start your day.

If you are willing to wait

By dorothyrogers1956 |

I really loved this place after the hour and half wait its really small and loud but the food is delicious I had a traditional breakfast while my friend's did pancakes with different fruit toppings everyone really enjoyed their meal worth the wait

This is the perfect spot for brunch!

By Beth S |

We had about a 50 mins wait but it was worth it! My girlfriend and l were visiting Chicago and wanted a good Sunday brunch. We tried the French toast flight which offers a variety of flavours and it's hard to pick a favourite as they were all so delectable! I think blueberries edged the others out for me. The Maple butter was a bonus. We ordered the black Angus steak and omelette which was accompanied by a cabernet sauce and a generous helping of mushrooms plus the cheesy hashbrowns. We ordered our steak medium and it was just perfect, melting in our mouths. One order was enough to share for 2. Washed it all down with a peach flavoured tea very pleasing to the palette. Must comment on the warm, attentive service. Everyone we interacted with was so pleasant. This was a truly lovely gastronomic experience.

Great food with great service.

By Abby A |

The food here is incredible and the overall experience is worth the wait. My pro tip, go about an hour ahead of when you want to eat and get on the waiting list. They will then text you so you can walk around hit one of the places nearby (Heritage Bikes) for coffee while you wait.

Harassment is free at this establishment.

By Bruce |

I went to visit with my girlfriend last week, because of the great reviews they have. As soon as we came in the host made her feel uncomfortable by eyeing her up and down blatantly right in her face. We waited for an hour afterwards and we didn’t mind at all because we were excited for the food. The food comes out and it was delicious and we had no complaints. What happened afterwards was absolutely disgusting. After she went to the bathroom and waited there for a while, some servers and the host kept looking at her and making faces in a sick creepy way. Moments later, the host had the balls to come up to my table and ask me, who is she? She’s with you? Is she your wife? After I responded that she was with me, he said comments like “oh wow you’re lucky, she’s f*^%# hot, look at her...” while looking at her direction. While we don’t mind looks, and we can understand admiring a beautiful girl, we don’t tolerate disrespect. Don’t be disrespectful to the point that she couldn’t wait to get out of there because of the harassment she felt. To the owners I would say, teach your employees to treat women with respect and if they can’t behave like decent human beings instead of drooling dogs, then send them home. Through out all this, I didn’t mention anything to her about this. As soon as we left, she told me how disrespectful, how creepy and how harassed she felt. Never again coming back here, the rape culture in this restaurant is very much alive!

Really Good Food!

By Rick |

We have been here many times. The food is always freshly made. It is a daytime only restaurant and usually crowded because the food is just so good. I love the chicken and waffles here. The portions are generous and the breakfasts are wonderful.

Fun & Delicious!

By Desiree S |

We had a 40 minute wait but after sitting down we were oh so happy that we waited! The food was unique and the best we had for breakfast in Chicago. The service was TOP NOTCH! Not sure how they prepare our dishes so quickly, but we were served ten minutes after ordering! This will be a must have everytime I visit the city! LOVE!!!!

Quirky Fun Breakfast Place

By Designer |

After reading many good reviews picked this place for breakfast and we were not disappointed. Called ahead to be put on the waitlist. When we arrive we would of had to wait fifteen minutes for a table. There was the community table that is first come first serve and two seats were available. As soon as we sat down the coffee was being poured immediately. Very Good service. We ordered our food before the person in front of us and the person to the left. Not sure why, however that would not deter me from coming back. Breakfast was unbelievable and all the waffles and french toast plates that went by looked incredible. They have specials everyday. I had the crawfish benedict and it was fantastic. The cheesy hashbrowns that accompany your meal are another meal in itself. Cannot wait to go back.

A1 customer service

By aquisticsoul |

This is a cute little apot right outaide the city. The wait wasnt as bad as expected. Maybe 40 mins but the food came out about 10 mins after ordering. At first I ordered the chicken and waffle and my taste buds didn't agree with the flavor at all. If you love nutmeg then you will love this dish I ended up getting and suprisingly loving thw caramel french toast...

It's unreal

By BoOrlando |

I've been here a two times now when I visit a friend who lives in the area. She brings her young son and they're always quick the with high chair. I've had the biscuits and gravy both times, this was my wife's first time and she loved the chicken and waffles. The wait can be crazy. We waited 70mins then found out our names weren't even on the list even though they sent a confirmation text. Moral of the story is if they say an hour don't be afraid to check after 30min/45min to make sure things are moving along. Our Server was Nadine and she was wonderful. She gave my wife advice on what to order and checked to see if we wanted fresh coffees to go which always gets high marks in my book. Also the bus boys hustle and do a great job.

It was an experience!

By Elizabeth R |

This is now my go to place to take out of towners for brunch. The wait is sometimes long but worth the wait. If your party is small you could probably get seated earlier. The very first time I went here, a man walked out and said " Now that was an experience!" and I said the very same thing when I left. Get the French Toast Flight to share and one of the specials. Cheers!

Hostess NOT the Mostess!!

By b56pete |

My party of six recently dined at Batter & Berries and although the food was appealing and delicious, the hostess leaves a little bit to be desired. We arrived at 10 am on a rainy Saturday and advised the hostess that I had a party of 6. I was advised that there would be a 120 minute wait. I said no problem and proceed to wait. After waiting a hour, I began to notice that parties of 4 arriving after my party was being seated. I expressed my concern to the hostess. Her reply was that it is much easier to seat a party of 4 than a party of 6. I suggested that it seemed unfair and asked why couldn't accommodations be made by placing a table that seats 2, next to a tablet that seats 4; and problem would be solved. It didn't happen so I proceed to continue my wait. As I continued my wait on a concrete lawn bench in the back waiting area, the hostess came over and said to me "would you mind moving down so our customers can be seated." I looked at her quite bewildered and said "no I won't move down; I like where I'm sitting." I could not believe she was asking me to slide down when there was plenty of room for them to take 3 extra steps and sit on the other end of the bench. And to insinuate that I was not a customer by asking me to move down "so our customers can be seated." Our waitress was excellent and the food was appealing and delicious. If it wasn't for Sherri Shepherd brunching on this day and her visit to our table, this visit would not have been a pleasant visit.

Great breakfast and brunch.

By Lasherdoh |

Great food. However, the location is very very small. We showed up 30 min after opening and it was already half full.. so if you want to eat with minimal wait.. show up early..or show up late. However it is cool that the restaurant tells you the live wait times on yelp...so if you dont have it downloaded..it will be worth the space on your phone just so you are not waiting long. We went in the summer.. would not have stayed if waiting in the cold.. its good but NOT THAT GOOD lol....just saying for those that dont like to wait outside.

Excellent food, terrible service, terrible coffee

By Michelle D |

Excellent food, terrible service & coffee. We were a party of 10, went for breakfast during a weekday. We were treated as an inconvenience by the staff, although there were only 2-3 other tables of guests. It’s not a kid-friendly place either, and it seemed to annoy the staff that we had little ones along. We weren’t even allowed to sit at a table until every one of us was inside the door, although the restaurant was mostly empty. Also, they play loud house music which ruins the possibility of a relaxing social experience- feels almost like a club lounge. Coffee was probably the worst I’ve ever had, does not match the quality of the food, which was excellent and met our expectations based on other reviews. Seems to be a typical case of a restaurant living off its reputation for too long, and not focusing on the overall experience. The staff acted like they were doing us a favor by serving us, rather than doing their job.

No that good.

By Mireya A |

Food was okay. I had an omelette and my kids got French toast. Place is very run down and crowded. People were super friendly. I don’t think it’s worth coming back.

Terrific Brunch

By Peter B |

A BYOB place in which many people showed up with bubbly. No reservations, and the wait was about 25 minutes at 9, and over an hour at 10. The French toast flight was scrumptious, as was the veggie omelet, which came with very good cheesy home fries. Coffee was top notch. A lot of energy. The communal table was fun. Really good.

Interesting little place!

By Robin R |

Not quite sure if it was worth the 90 minute wait, but would give it another try. Seem to be best known for the French toast flight which serves four different French toasts, although they are only half slices. The super flight included the days special French toast, which today was Bailey’s with mint. The waitress made sure to tell us that each batter is made differently, that it’s not just different toppings. She also seemed to be pushing everyone to order it for the table to share, we didn’t, but husband let us all taste. Nephew had the sweet potatoe waffle “stuffed” with chicken and served with a batter dipped chicken with hot sauce. It has a special name on the menu. He enjoyed it very much, loved the hot sauce mixed with the maple better and syrup. It was tasty. The waffle had a good sweet potato taste, not just a hint of it. I had a special for the day, crabcakes Benedict served with a Cajun hollandaise and cheesy hash browns. The interesting thing is that it wasn’t served on any type of bread. The crabcakes had a good flavor and seemed to be mostly crab. They were a bit softer than I had expected. The poached eggs were good. The one complaint we all had is that the food could have been hotter, which my husband mentioned to the owner. Thinking about the meal later I thought it would have been nice to have some sort of garnish on the plate- a little fruit. After our long wait the waitress seemed to rush us a bit and we didn’t even realize there was another side of the menu. All in all though good food, nice people.

Loud but worth it

By Sara D |

We went to Batter and Berries on a Sunday morning which is probably the busiest time of the week for a brunch focused restaurant. However, we only waited about 25 minutes and they send a text message when your table it is ready so we took advantage of that to walk around the neighborhood. The place is small, which is not unusual in the city, and the noise level was incredible. This was mainly from the number of people packed into the place and not necessarily from the music. The service was speedy and knowledgeable. I had the special which was a blood orange french toast and my husband had the french toast flight. Both meals were delicious. I like my food a little warmer and was surprised that it was room temperature but that was probably from the cooler toppings. All in all it was worth the wait!

"Busy Weekend"

By jaylbay |

We had been here for breakfast before on a weekday and enjoyed the neighborhood atmosphere, so we decided to visit again on a Sunday late morning..only to find out the wait was hours, not minutes, to be seated. When our name was called we decided to have lunch instead and we're not disappointed with the sandwiches and sides that were available. Next time it will be a weekday!!

Delicious

By lashawndajohnson24 |

The strawberry French toast is off the meter!!! And the homemade pork sausage was spicy and delightful!!

Good Brunch

I went on Mother's Day, the wait was shorter than first quoted which was nice! Our waiter was knowledgeable and funny. The food also came quickly and was very fresh.

Really Good Food!

By MARIENNE P |

We have been here many times. The food is freshly made and it is made with love. It is a daytime only restaurant and it is often crowded because the food is so good. People travel from all parts of the City to dine here. Although dishes may sound like dishes in other restaurants - they are NOT because they have a unique twist. I don't like chicken but I love the chicken and waffles here. The portions are generous and the breakfasts are wonderful. The only downsides are the crowds and, because of them, the sound level is quite high.

Batter N Berries is the Best!

By adjua |

When I was last in Chicago, a friend told me about this restaurant, so, six of our family members, including a two year old, decided to try it. It’s not a huge place, but it’s a great use of space. Be sure to check the hours of operation because it’s a popular place. The staff is very warm and friendly, and particularly made me, an out of towner, feel very welcome. I had chicken n waffles, and, of course, tasted everyone else’s food, too. The plates were generous. My sister eats mostly vegan, and she found plenty of options. I assure you, it’ll be the first restaurant I visit when I return to Chicago!

GrEaT Food 😋

By Willa C |

While visiting family and friends, we decided to go grab brunch and it was AMAZING. Anyone who knows me well, knows I LOVE TO EAT 🍽 I apologize for not telling everyone about this great eatery sooner, but life happens. Even though I’m delayed in this post PLEASE go visit. You will have to probably still wait in line but the wait was worth it! Forgot what my meal was 😜 other than French toast and spinach. I also had a mimosa that was just as great as the food. Great spot… do yourself a favor and give it a try. Sorry again this is Delayed… I’ll blame Covid just like every other business 😆 (just kidding…actually I’m not)

Nicely Battered and Seasoned Fried Chicken

By Dionna S |

My husband couldn't stop raving about the chicken and waffle. The fried chicken is seasoned perfectly, and great house hot sauce. Outstanding customer service, made us feel like important people. My cousin loved the banana and walnut waffle. Oh, and the french toast is excellent, perfect balance of sweet and salty taste..had the sampler. Great job!!!!

Loud, did I say Loud!

By Lorenzo C |

When you hear a lot about a place you can’t wait to go! I usually temper my enthusiasm because I don’t want to be disappointed! We arrived early Saturday morning at 8:30AM and it was already packed. Short wait, and it was loud! We were seated in a window area and that was great! Our waitress was a little scattered and when we enquired about our order she said oops! Short time later we received our food which was abundant, flavorful and yummy, yummy! Waitress not withstanding, noise level not withstanding, this place is highly recommended! I had the lobster omelette and the French toast Flight! Good! My wife had eggs Benedict! Good! Others had chicken sausage and a special! Good! Coffee was poured plentiful and was good. Take away’s: get there as early as you can, talk loudly like everyone else and make room later for your take home leftovers! Highly recommend!

Extremely Popular

By Clinton E Ward III |

Wow! Who would have thought that during a Tuesday morning, the business would be so busy. We now understand why... Our server, Tim, was extremely friendly including a server, Usime, that was not ours; our server also was very knowledgeable of the specials. We both had the Jambalaya Omelette special with Chicken Andouille and good sized Shrimp, that was absolutely amazing! It was served the BB Hashbrowns w/Cheese. My wife also had the Strawberry French Toast while I had 12 Grain Wheat Toast. We both had Coffee, refilled regularly along with water. A bit pricey, but a gem.

Best breakfast ever!

By Tish S |

My family and I were visiting from TN and visited this place due to a recommendation from another family member that lives in Chicago. It was AMAZING! The service was top notch and the food was OUTSTANDING! The French toast is to die for! Our waitress Sheena was very knowledgeable and gave great recommendations. It’s worth the wait! Tip: go on yelp and join the waitlist ahead of time.

Best Brunch in Chicago

By Komo P |

Affordable brunch spot. Long wait time is worth it. The french toast flight was perfect. They also have a seasonal french toast. Their grilled cheese was really good too with their homemade salsa.

Refreshing customer service!!

By Stephen J |

This place is amazing to see. The staff are so kind an accommodating. The space seats...maybe 90 and they don't compromise service for the spacial deficiencies. Because of this, the wait can be from 30-90mins depending on how many you want to seat. The food is always amazing and they have a constant variety of options. SUPEREXCELLENT RATING!!

Good Vibes and Good Food

By Jami W. |

The food was soo good!! Our Server Tusiime went above and beyond to make sure we had a great experience. Everything that he recommended was good. I would recommend getting there early because it's a very popular breakfast spot. We waited about 30-40 minutes before we were seated. It didn't take long for them to bring our food out and it was hot/fresh. We'll definitely be back the next time we're in Chicago!

First Visit...Won't Be My Last!!

By TexasDiva007 |

After reading so much about Batter & Berries, I finally had a chance to experience it for myself. Happy to say, I was not disappointed! One of the highly recommended menu items is the French Toast Flight. This is a sample of strawberry, blueberry, lemon, and caramel French toast. I was offered the special flavor of the day, sangria toast. They were all delicious!! Besides great food, the staff is friendly, and the atmosphere is very upbeat. Be sure to check them out!!

Great Breakfast fare and service.

Great breakfast choices and the food was excellent. There was a bit of a wait but it was worth it. The fruit was very fresh as well as their fresh squeezed orange juice.

Small restaurant packed with flavor!

By GlobalExec |

What a culinary experience! Fresh, innovative and delicious menu selections (I had the catfish) that is served in a modest setting with outstanding, attentive service and overall incredible experience.

Love this place

By JaimeG360 |

Crowded and noisy at 11 in a weekday, but it's because everyone was enjoying the food! Cute little place. Great variety without a huge menu. Love the French toast "flight," option- b/c you get to sample all the berry flavors. They also had maybe 4 additional specials- smoked salmon Benedict and lobster omelette. Delicious! Highly recommend.

Outstanding

Service was tremendous. I had the waffle sampler plate (with 4 styles). Excellent. Extremely busy on a Monday mid-morning. My group of four was well pleased in all respects.

Brunch!! Sooo good!

By Laura C |

My friend took me here for brunch my first full day in Chicago. It was a Friday morning and we still had a 45 minute wait but it was worth it!! We ordered the salmon Benedict and caramel apple pie French toast. Shared both plates and walked out of there ready to start my day. The staff and the owner are very welcoming and make you feel like you’re part of the family from the minute you walk in until you walk out. I definitely recommend this place if you’re in Chicago and you will not regret it.

Great food but not a relaxing way to enjoy brunch

By Ryan C |

Walk past this place most mornings and the line is always out the door and waits upto an hour. We managed to get in early on a weekday and only wait 20mins so not too bad. The food was pretty fantastic, and the service good too, its a little pricey which I understand as it's super popular and the food is the delicious but the coffee is just average and doesn't need to that price, especially as in most diners you might have 3-4 refills but here you're kind of rushed all the way through so barely finish 1. Overall, I would go again if wait was short but not worth an hour. For value for money, there are other options nearby

Great location and food at the Riverwalk

By Yolanda H |

The French toast flight was absolutely delicious. My husband loved the chicken and waffles. The chicken sausage was flavorful.

Great food

By Wvhofdc |

I was in town from DC, and on a recommendation from a friend I went. Said from being told we would be seated in 20 minutes, which turned in an hour the place is a must try. The food was great. The pancakes had a ton of flavor, and other in my party raves about the French toast. Will return if I am back in the Chi.

Plenty of food in a fun, noisy environment

By Jeffwithtwoels |

I don't know how you like to wake up: if you need a quiet place to have a meditative start to your day, then look elsewhere than Batter & Berries. This place is always jumping, and has been jammed every time I've gone. That said, if you want a place that's noisy, lively, full of people, with food that comes in large portions, this might be the perfect place. I suspect that a fair number of patrons are having wake-up cocktails to help undo their partying of the night before: the drinks look sizable. Lots of different kinds of pancakes, waffles, egg dishes, etc. to explore. If you want to wake up to a party, this might be your perfect choice.

OMG! Delicious!!

By Sonia S |

Very quaint spot, staff was great and the owner stopped by our table to thank us for visiting. Definitely recommend when in Chicago. They are known for their French toast; however we chose the lamb chops (melt in your mouth delicious) and the crab Benedict (full of lump meat crab, no fillers).

Always Worth It

By Andre Thomas |

I've been here twice so far, the second time being my birthday, which fell on a Sunday this year. I got to B&B at 10:30, put my name down and waited two hours for them to text for my party. After being seated, everything was great! I've loved my meal both times, and everyone that came with me could say the same. Service was great, and the place does get loud when it's filled-but no big deal. In my opinion, the food was for sure worth the wait and I'd wait again.

Worth the wait (and you WILL wait)

By Thom-Shap |

This is my go-to breakfast/brunch spot every time I'm in Chicago. Of course the French toast - I mean, at least get a side order of the lemon, if you don't want to be seen as a heathen, and maybe a side of their cheesy hashbrowns. They will show you instagram-worthy, jk actually instagram pictures of all of their specials and detail everything. If you aren't planning to eat again that day and the poutine is available, get that. The sweet potato waffle that comes with the fried chicken is divine. Really, you can't go wrong with anything here.

Best to go during the weekday!

By Eugene W |

This is a restaurant that requires building in wait time before being seated. On the weekends, 1-2 hours of wait time is possible. You usually can get in in less than an hour during the week. Whichever, the food is amazing. Little things like crab or lobster omelettes are from another world. They have family style seating also that is fun. You meet other people by discussing the various dishes that everyone is enjoying. Thanks God it is off of the beaten path. Otherwise, they would have to triipple the size of the place!

Good food, but noisy

By winwhelan |

I had been getting some emails advertising this place, so I thought I'd try it. I ended up not staying because it was very crowded and very noisy. Obviously it was good because so many people were there.

YOU MUST EAT HERE!!!

By JulyJubilee |

I’m a french toast enthusiast and Batter and Berries has the best french toast!! All of the food was good. Long wait but worth every bite!!

Amazing food!!

By Megan M |

Food is amazing here!! The French toast flight is a great shared dish for 2-4 people and then you can each get something savory on top of it! I had the breakfast sandwich and was blown away by how tasty it was! Highly recommend! Also I was extremely impressed with the tea options. You don’t see that many places and it was very appreciated!!

Brunch

By jet_set_jeree |

I had seen this place on black ink Chicago and so many times in my travel groups. I just had to try it while in Chicago. I am so glad I did. The wait was over 2 hours, but my friend had us placed on the list while we got dressed. We were seated as soon as we got there so no biggie there. I wish I could remember our waiters name because he was sooooo awesome! He told us riddles that kept us guessing and gave recommendations that turned out great! I will definitely be back. Can’t forget that you get to bring your own alcohol for your mimosas. That was a first! I loved it...

Overrated

By Miss M |

first time visitors(From GA) and food was lacking. I was told drunken chicken was a special with deglaze bourbon Bbq sauce.. please stop telling customers that due to it's an off putting cheap BBQ sauce that I wouldn't recommend putting on any food. Shame on them to charge $21.00. And that sweet potato waffle and chicken with was double fried which wasn't requested. I'll pass on that as well. Don't believe the hype the menu changes often from what's being told to customers so don't be surprised if visit.

Flight Of French Toast

By Iruela11 |

I had the Flight of French Toast, it was delish. The dish did not even need maple syrup as the butter was made of maple syrup.. We did have to wait 45minutes, but it was worth it.

Invisibility is my Super Power!!!

By Ketsup OnPizza |

Looks like Sci-Fi can be Real since Invisibility is my Super Power. Really! I'm not joking. I now know how it feels when your super power is malfunctioning and no one sees you because you stayed invisible. Considering this is my second attempt to eat here (the first try was a bust since it took so long to get a seat and to even order because they forgot me so I left), they are pretty consistent at least with me when it comes to service. This time I made sure I was their very 1st customer once they opened up what with limited seating and all. Nothing fancy for me so I went with "The Traditional" (2 eggs, B&B cheese crusted hash browns, and a choice of bacon). During the whole hour after ordering I couldn't believe my eyes when all the other diners got their food while I twiddle my fingers. I tried to keep myself occupied by browsing on my phone but I was just so so hungry. I was speechless! I was invisible again! They forgot my order. After that I decided to leave..again! As soon as I got up..here comes my order. Seriously?!? I walked out shaking my head. Move over Bilbo Baggins. Step aside Harry Potter. I don't need the One Ring or Harry Potter's Cloak of Invisibility. No need for a serum either Hollow Man. There's a new Boss of Invisibility in town. That's ME! So to all you folks out there. Beware. If you don't wanna end up like Scarlett O'Hara saying "As God is my witness, as God is my witness they're are not going to lick me. I'm going to live through this and when its all over, I'll never be hungry again. No, nor any of my folk. If I have to lie, steal, cheat, or kill, as God is my witness I'll never be hungry again!" BE VISIBLE!!!

Eat Here!

By Alonzo B |

When in Chicago, eat at Batter and Berries. The French toast flight (lemon, strawberry, blueberry and caramel) is a must have. I had the Executive steak which is a ribeye served on top of omelette (I had mine scrambled) with onion and mushroom gravy with cheesey hash browns. The homemade hot sauce was EVERYTHING! Excelkent food with excellent service. Leslie was our server and she was awesome with suggestions and very friendly and funny. I look forward to going back.

Worth the hour and a half wait

By carla482015 |

Me and my daughter took the blue line and brown line to get over here on the north side of chi' town to eat breakfast. there was already a line outside and the wait was an hour and a half. my daughter wanted to leave but I said we have traveled this far to eat here we staying, so we copped a squat outside someone doorstep next door, and someone came out twice and we moved twice and sat back down and started playing M.A.S.H about four times. it was a Friday morning 8-10-18. the chef brought daquari French toast outside for us to sample just before we were texted to be seated. we were seated in the middle with random other people that were either single or two or three , so the table sat at least 10 people. I ordered coffee right away, wish I would have thought about drinking it outside, that's something they could ask the patrons next time do they want something to drink while they wait. Kendra ordered water and a fight of French toast(lemon, strawberry, blueberry, and carmel), I had a lobster omelet that was the bomb, it had asparagus, crab I believe and the best sauce, with cheese hash browns. I was stuffed after I left and everything was seasoned well, so the hour and a half was worth my wait.

Fantastic breakfast and delightful service.

By Christine P |

This is a fun place to grab breakfast in a cool neighborhood. I had a hard time choosing between two specials - the lobster omelette and the pineapple rum French toast. I usually opt for savory, but figured I’d change my routine and go with sweet since French toast is their signature breakfast item. The French toast was delicious! I don’t think I would have gone wrong with the omelette either. My server, Tusiime, was attentive and fun. He asked me a riddle every time he came over. The coffee was good, I was able to get seated right away, this was a great breakfast treat.

Best meal we had in Chicago this trip

By Edge W |

Wait was shorter than we were told, and the table we were shown to was near the kitchen and a bit quieter than front area. The menu was a treat in itself. Choices were tough to make. Then Timothy brought our attention to the specials board--now choices were tougher. One chose an egg dish; two chose French toast, and I opted for lamb chops. All came with potatoes. All were superb.

We went here twice in our 4 day stay in Chicago. I am a breakfast person. I loved each meal. Lots of flavor. The place is small but when you get your food you will not care. The staff was great. On the second day our waitress was horrible but the food made up for her attitude. They have staff for water..coffee and even to bring out your food. So I didn't get why she couldn't get it together. But there was a help wanted sign...so maybe she was new? Overall the food is amazing.

Worst place to go when you’re hungry

By Henk S |

Despite what you would expect given the reviews and long waiting lines, this is NOT a place to visit and certainly not a place to eat. You can’t make a reservation. You have to go and get yourself on the waiting list. That in itself is OK, as long as the staff would be honest about the actual waiting time. We were told that we would have to wait 90 minutes, but probably less. It took 2 hours and 20 minutes when we were asked to enter the restaurant. It then took them another hour to serve our orders. The food was OK, but nothing special. Certainly not worth the tremendous wait. As this is a BYOB place many guests take this opportunity to empty multiple bottles to kill the time (and get louder after each glass). I wish I had brought my booze to lighten my suffering.

Do Not Get Chicken Fajita Omollete

By Nomad57521433124 |

Chicken fajita omelets was very disappointing. I knew it said deconstructed but I wasn't expect completely dry. This is the absolute only item I would NOT RECOMMEND. Some kind of sauce matters. I think it should just be taken off the menu. I can't see how to improve it? Maybe a fajita type sauce...maybe smaller pieces of Vegetables? Maybe the chicken chopped smaller?....

I want to give it 6 stars

Without a doubt my most favourite experience in Chicago. It’s the people. Yes the food is amazing, but the staff are out of this world. Be aware of how busy it can be. We rocked up on a Sunday at 10 and there was a 30 minute queue. Came back Monday at 9am and it was very quiet. Tuesday at 930 and it was very busy. So I’m not sure when to tell you to go. Just be prepared for a potential wait. Back to the food. Its incredible. Had the toast, omelette and also breakfast sandwich. It’s worth coming back a few times to work your way through. It’s so tasty. Large portions but take home available. Service joyous and efficient. Constant refill of coffee and water. It can be loud but to me, that’s what makes the place. The atmosphere. The fun almost secondary to the food. Need I say more? Awesome. Thank you.

Decent food, slow service, insane wait times

By sm28185 |

Thankfully we were able to get in line through Yelp, as I would've regretted waiting for an hour plus otherwise. We were seated within a few minutes of checking in after having been in line for about 70-75 minutes. Unfortunately from there, it took another 10 min to get glasses of water and another 5 min before our waitress greeted us. The team was friendly in general, but the different periods of waiting were a little rough. The "We're Movin On Up" Executive dish was pretty solid and very filling, but the sauce that was used in the dish definitely didn't taste very breakfast/brunch-friendly. It kinda threw the rest of the dish off a bit. Having seen a lot of pictures of the Cluck-N-Gaufre (Goof) dish in other reviews, I had fairly high hopes for it. Unfortunately, it ended up being the most disappointing of the dishes. The hot sauce flavor of the chicken was actually very tasty, but was overshadowed by the almost burnt texture and dry taste of the breading/chicken itself. The Caramel French Toast was the highlight of the meal, and adding some cut up bananas/strawberries made it even better. The food in general was good, but between that, the insane wait times, and the average service, I don't see myself coming back.

Flight of French toast

By meliss1830 |

Disappointed in food and the service. Came here on a Saturday morning before the zoo. The wait was about 20-25 minutes. We were sat down and were brought coffee right away. We ordered a slew of dishes because we wanted to try several things. We ordered the short rib dish, flight of french toast, chicken/ gravy and 2 omelettes. Our waitress was Sheena and she was great at first. We got all but one dish and that last dish took forever to come out. It seemed like the waitress or kitchen forgot about it. We were about to cancel the order after 15 more minutes of waiting when it came out. Don't know what happened and it was not explained to us. I overheard another table had a problem with a dish coming out as well and had that part of the meal as comped. Nothing for us. Only added an extra star because the flight was the only thing that was appetizing.

Yummy, Tasty, Worth the Wait

By N.C. |

We visited here (9/8/19) on a Girls Trip. We added our names to the online Waitlist before we left our hotel downtown. Once we arrive we were around 30th on the list. It took maybe an hour or less to get seated. While waiting we walked down to street to a Spirits store and purchased some Rose' to go along with our Brunch. The food was really good. The French Toast flight was the highlight for me. I had the spicy chicken and waffle, but I think there was a bit to much going on with the waffle?. My friends enjoyed their meals as well. Our server was nice and very entertaining. This is a must stop for those visiting or living in Chicago.

Home of the world famous French Toast Flight

By Taylor B |

When we are at home in Chicago, my wife and I don't usually go out for breakfast, certainly not as often as we do when traveling from coast go coast. But we make exceptions. Batter & Berries is one of them. Located at 2748 North Lincoln Avenue, south of Diversey, it is open from 8 to 3 daily, a bright cafe with a big yellow sign and yellow door out front and a menu filled with creative pancakes, omelets and the house's signature item, the world famous French Toast Flight. The husband-and-wife team of Dr. Tanya and Craig Richardson and chef Ken L. Polk opened Batter & Berries in 2012 and it has been a raving success ever since. No such thing as a negative review. My wife ordered Polk's version of a Belgian waffle, called Blueberry Belgique, with blueberry, lemon and spice batter, fresh blueberries and blueberry cream smothered with 100 percent pure maple syrup. In her view, a Belgian waffle never tasted so good. I couldn't resist the house speciality, the French Toast Flight, a sampling of strawberry, blueberry, lemon and caramel French Toasts made with locally baked brioche and soaked in 100 percent pure maple syrup. At Batter & Berries, breakfast has a whole new definition.

Delicious!

By Denise G. |

The food here is absolutely delicious. Would it warrant the almost 2 hour wait for a table? Maybe. That would be my only downside to this establishment. Maybe expand to a larger location to accommodate the large amount of people that come here. I would advise anyone to come here and get your name on the waiting list and then go run a few errands. But I can see why this place gets packed because our brunch was spectacular (Super Flight French Toast and Biscuits with Gravy were to die to for). We will definitely come back on our next trip to Chicago.

Long waits - worth it!

By Daisy3421 |

We waited 30 min. By the time we finished eating the wait time was an hour and a half. Not sure a I would wait that long but this place is pretty dang good. Maybe the best I’ve had in a really long time. It’s small, and LOUD. They probably need to figure out some sound reflectors or something - we sat in the front windows and we couldn’t hear each other talking (there were only 4 of us) so if you want a quaint time to visit this isn’t the place for conversation. But it’s a great place for chowing down on great food.

Great/Unique Breakfast Food

Love the French Toast sampler Always good. My wife had the Chipotle Shrimp Omelette. It was expensive, but tasted great.

Get here Quick! The Best Breakfast!

If you are blessed enough to be serviced by Twoseme (Two-See-Me) Jackson, you are in for the time of your life. He is FULL of life & riddles. He is "anointed" to Welcome and Serve! As fast as he can talk, he listens to WHO you are and makes amazing suggestions accordingly. Great Service is icing on the cake, the cake is the phenomal food. It is simple with a twist. They always have super specials that include savory surf and seafoods: lobster, shrimp, short ribs, etc. We chose the standards, that flavor wise are anything but standard, they're superb: Large pillowy Buckwheat pancakes. They have that nutty deliciousness without the heaviness that can sometimes accompany. They were topped with Blueberries and Strawberries and delicious Maple Butter, which I believe is also in the batter. The Flight of French Toast is a RICH medley of goodness, topped with fruits, nuts, zest a luxuriously whipped scoop of cloudlike butter. The bacon is thick cut and crisp. The Chicken Sausage is homemade. The eggs are fluffy and can have a bevy of cheeses if desired. We also requested the super flavor packed Garlic Hot Sauce, which they should bottle (with real chunks of minced garlic.) It is a BYOB but plenty of juices. We had straight Cranberry & a thick mix of Cranberry and Pineapple. Parking is street parking. Join the waiting list immediately. Bathrooms are CLEAN! We do not easily give 5-stars but two Chi Town restaurants DESERVE all-star kudos, Batter & Berries is defined one of them (the other is Virtue)!

Delicious experience!

By Sandy K |

What a great restaurant!! Coffee cups and waters were kept full the entire time. The food was amazing! From chicken and waffles to strawberry French toast, nothing but exceptional taste. Bacon ordered crisp and eggs medium were cooked to perfection. Would recommend this restaurant any time you are in Chicago!

Wanted to have a good midday meal, got a great meal. We have been here several times and it a great place to go. Excellent food and service, menu choices are enough to be give a good selection, specials add to the experience. We will be back.

A Must!

By Tamika B |

My family visited at the recommendation of my sister in law and we were not disappointed! I had the chicken and waffles. My son had the French toast special and my husband had the salmon special! Everything was superb! There is usually a wait so be prepared! The server was genuine and attentive! One of the managers talked with us for a while! Very customer oriented and friendly! We will be back! 10/10 recommend!

French Toast Flight

By Andrew D |

They are known for their french toast flight and for good reason. You get 4 different types of french toast, each one more delicious than the last. The prices are reasonable and the decor and atmosphere are great. Note that it can get loud so if that is not your scene maybe go somewhere else.

A real experience!

A very family oriented atmosphere! Me and my girlfriend enjoyed a nice Sunday brunch with my niece. Their menu offers a variety of breakfast and lunch items that are delicious, and will defiantly exceed your expectations!

Please open location in North Burbs!

This Breakfast was off the charts! It was worth the Hour and a half drive! We had a energetic server Tusiime and he regaled us his funny riddles and daily specials. The lemon French toast with candied walnuts was life changing! The salmon croquettes with eggs taste just like moms. If you can’t decide like me half orders are available ..so you can have the best of both worlds.

Must experience!

We had a wonderful experience! Excellent food and wonderful staff. They do not take reservation so we put our name in and were told an exact time to be seated.

No words to describe!

By Kevin F |

Such a delicious place! Food was super fast, and amazingly delicious! There is a reason this place is marked as one of the best in Chicago! It is a little small inside so loud and cramped is expected, but it's so worth it. The wait staff is amazing, and we even had the owner stop by to say "Hi" and just tell all of us (At the community table) how much he appreciates us for coming. It was just an overall great experience and the food is amazing!

Addicted to those potatoes

By Alexandra B |

I’ve been here a few times and never been disappointed! First of all Timothy is an angel of a server and always gives the best service! Now, the food! Everything I’ve had here is to die for!! The omelets come with cheese crusted potatoes that are so delicious and addicting. I recently had the chicken Alfredo omelet that was on special today is out of this world. Not to mention decadent French toast. Be sure to order some to share with the table and you’ll be counting down the days until you can visit again.

Great breakfast/experience

Always our go to breakfast spot whenever family and friends come in town! Food is just as great as the service. Never disappoints!

Eat here!

The most amazing food but my server Tusiime was phenomenal. Well versed on the food served, and kept his entire section bought into him. This review could easily be more about him than the food. Definitely will return and highly recommended!

Chicago

By onthegoladi |

I visited Chicago for the first time this past weekend and I yelped this restaurant and ....this place was AMAZING. From the customer service to the food!!! It was worth the 45 minute wait. Tucmee (I know, I butchered the spelling, sorry) was a awesome waiter. He was very attentive and welcoming. Also, I believe the other gentleman may have been the manager/owner, he was very pleasant. I love to see owner's engage with their customers. This establishment is highly recommended by myself and my friend. I will definitely be returning to Chicago and Batter and Berries. #LasVegas

Great Food

By Tanya T. |

Our wait was less than ten minutes and the waiter was friendly and tried to make the experience fun (but I am not good at riddles and was not in the mood to solve things...every challenge made me uncomfortable). The food arrived in a reasonable amount of time, even though the place was packed -- every bite was delicious. The noise levels can be above average but it is worth a visit.

Great food but insane waits.

By Sandra D |

The food is very good but the waits are crazy. It is crowded and noisy. Fun to go once or twice but too much of a hassle to make a habit of it.

Worth the Wait!

By Palmtreesinmyblood |

As South(west)-siders of the City my husband and I naturally got all turned around looking for a parking space. North-siders would have just Ubered. One of us should have first gone in and put our name in the queue but we'll know better next time. We received a "Head this way!" text and finished our wait inside. This was equally a delightful way to view menu items, and torture as staff passed by with mouth-watering concoctions. We politely refrained from snatching anything. When our server discovered it was our first visit to the restaurant he regaled us with a brief history, his menu suggestions, and even a couple riddles to solve. Fun! We enjoyed a waffle sampler with coffee until our own meals passed under watchful eyes to our table. It was our first visit but definitely not the last!

Impressive service and food

By miumiu700 |

We got a recommendation from Facebook. We waited for an hour for a table but we were impressed by the service. It's worth the wait. There are a lot of staff and they all went out of their way to deliver the best service possible. Along with the great food quality I will forever recommend the place for everyone I know.

brunch solo

By chattygirl7491 |

Came for brunch on Saturday. i am visiting Chicago on my own since my husband is working. Most have been friendly and helpful. Some professed foodies i met last night said this was a must try for brunch. i made my way there. it was crowded and loud. Cute little place cheery decor and everyone having great time .. chatting and laughing. its byob and a few brought champagne and oj. i didn't make reservations but they seated me immediately at the end of a table where several separate couples were seated. my husband would have hated being seated so close to strangers but being alone and more social... i was fine they are known for their French Toast and several to choose from ... never fear you can choose to order THE FLIGHT OF FRENCH TOAST. so you get one piece of several ... but lady next to me clued me into The SUPER FLIGHT. you get an extra which is oreo. omg. it all was so good. service was fast and efficient. when they saw i wasn't using my knife and spoon they swiped it off the table without a word ... huh never had that happen. bottomline great brunch!

Delightful Experience

By Scenic70291 |

We understand this is a very busy place at breakfast time & on the weekends it can have an hour+ wait, so we had a really nice late weekday breakfast with no wait. Small with only a dozen tables, the place is busy with a lot of hussle bussle! Simply decorated, the restaurant has a homey, comfortable feel with lots of attention by the staff. We shared the Super Flight and Spinach Omelet; both were cooked to perfection and served piping hot. It is a little pricey but probably average for Chicago. We lik d the place and will be back with friends!

Best French Toast

By Dee T |

This was a great place to visit on my business trip to Chicago. The decor was cute, the view was nice and the French Toast was damn good! The Flight consisted of Blueberry, Strawberry, Caramel, and Lemon French Toast. There was one extra which was the flavor of the week, Mango Margarita which I passed on. I’m sure it would have been just as delicious. My friend ordered the Spanish Omelet which was also very good! If you’re visiting Chicago, be sure to stop by! It’s located in the Lincoln Park area.

Saturday Morning Brunch

By Camille R |

Don’t walk…run here!! We visit the city of Chicago often but never took the time to try this place out while in town. Batteries and Berries exceeded my expectations. The wait wasn’t long at all due to adding our name to the waitlist ahead of time. They’re known for their French toast sticks, and I see why. It was literally the most amazing French toast I’ve ever tried in my 41 years of life. Our waitress was friendly, patient, and knowledgeable as well. They don’t serve alcohol but it is BYOB which is an even cheaper option! It’s also black owned, which makes me even more inclined to support. I’m telling anyone who’s willing to listen about this place in the future. We’ll definitely be back next time we’re in town.
