Classic and tasty but loud

By Familytravelmaven |

The setting of Bix is alluring... nestled in a small alley in what used to be a gold storage room with high ceilings and a balcony...you are wowed by the ambiance. The menu is eclectic but has at least one dish that will please everyone at the table. I opted for the lamb which was cooked perfectly and removed from the bone before plating. The ceviche appetizer was the best, I could have licked the bowl! My only comment was the noise level. When the Jazz Band started we had to scream across the table to talk. Perhaps some decorative sound panels could help that on the large open walls? Bix is a classic and worth the experience.

Outstanding

By Ron J |

What a great experience. Great dinner and live entertainment in a very old world setting. Staff was very very pleasant. Food was excellent. Drinks were generous. I’m sure you will enjoy the experience.

Hard to over rate it

By KSH50 |

Visited our first night in San Francisco. Food was great - appetizers of "pillow" potatoes and Dungeness crab rolls, with main courses of halibut and chicken "hash." Espresso and Bix's version of bananas foster completed a great meal. A jazz pianist played early, and a jazz trio later. Worth hearing them, even without the food. Don't come to San Francisco without going to Bix.

Could be brilliant

By John Cavanagh |

There's so much noise coming from the bar as the drinkers compete with the singer to be heard that it make quite conversation over dinner impossible. Out starters were first rate but the mains were a disappointment, with such fine ingredients to hand it was a shame, there was little of no seasoning in my lamb and it was bland (sorry) My daughters Chicken hash was sadly tasteless and badly presented. With the prices charged perhaps the chef should taste his food and use some salt and pepper. The dessert chef certainly tastes as they were great, but mains sorry they missed the mark. Sad as its a great place. John Cavanagh 5/10 April 2017

Fancy dinner

By Marishechka |

I booked a table to bring my guests from Chicago to celebrate my Birthday with us. We were promptly offered a table at the center by the piano . It was nice but a little bit too noisy . The room itself felt like a jazz Club since it was kind of dark with dim lights and with 2 levels overseeing the floor. The music was pleasant and as a background didn’t bother us too much . But in opposite it makes you feel special . We ordered a few bottles of Italian Red and starters the feast .The Food choices were good. We decided on appetizer to start . We had a Crab roll appetizer which consists of 4 peaces of white bread with a little bit of crab meet on top. After that each of us ordered a Cesar salad with anchovies . I had Duck with rhubarb , my guests had Lamb with vigors and cheeseburger with truffles and fries. The food was nicely prepared and portions are fine. All the prices for the entries were $35 and up . Kind of pricey but ok. Got the dessert we had bread pudding with chocolate sauce on top. It was reach enough so we decided to share . Overall we had pleasant experience to celebrate Birthday. This place is definitely for a special occasions and not for everyday dinner.

Fabulous Sweet 16 dinner

By Perkidl69 |

Visiting San Fran for my daughter’s 16th birthday and I made reservations at Bix based on a friend reco. We weren’t disappointed. Fabulous service food and wine list. Banana Foster was the bomb! And truffle fries were scrumptious.

Bad Form on reservations

By Robert M |

Still dig this restaurant. I've been coming for many years. With business colleagues and personally. But yesterday I called to confirm a reservation because I could not remember what time I booked. The lady who answered was incredibly rude. She said not only did I not have a reservation that night, but that I had never made a reservation there according to their records and based on my phone number. She said this while I was scrolling through perhaps a dozen previous reservation notifications with the same number I've had for years. She was belligerent and unbelievably confident for someone so wrong. I will still go back of course but it was a reminder of how important it is to have professionals working for you who know how to communicate and how not to piss of customers who've spent thousands of dollars with you over many years.

Romantic dinner with live music

By Mrs AAB |

A great experience and romantic restaurant. Great for a special occasion or date. It’s quite expensive but very busy. The food is delicious particularly the fish and steak. Good cocktails too. Expect to pay $45 for a plate of dinner and also note they add 6% SF offset to the bill to cover staff healthcare. The experience and architecture is stunning. Live music is great.

Cool and unusual place !

By Lucija |

My first time visiting this place, I was so surprised with the inside of the restaurant. So when my friends took me there, from the street you see brick building and blinking sign Bix. It doesn't look promising. Then you step closer and you go inside-wow! Like you are in a movie, with a real person playing piano, lights are dimmed and food is soo yummy! The food IS expensive, but it is worth experience!

Elegant food

By Elizabeth M |

Coincidentally, we (a small group of 4) had a 6:00 dinner at Bix recently, when the restaurant was celebrating its 30th anniversary. The menu was interesting, and each of us ordered something different: sea scallops, lobster/spaghetti, pork chops, and salmon. Not only was the food universally wonderful, we were served complimentary champagne to ceelbrate the anniversary! The service was excellent. I enthusiastically recommend this restaurant.

Birthday dinner for my friends 60th!

By GlobalJZ |

Wonderful experience and a tremendous vibe. Balcony seating overlooking pianist and classic bar. Started with Bix Boulevardier (inspired drink) and had a wonderful meal that was expertly prepared and served. Sommelier was brilliant and offered an expert pairing. After dinner drinks at the bar included aperitif (warmed Frangelico) followed by Norwegian Akavit - all in stock and served expertly. This was a high-class experience!

Loved the music and ambiance - the food was fine

By E1H |

We went on a date. The ambience and live music was fab! For American standards, the food portions are small. The duck was beautiful but could have done with an additional side. My parents had the steak which at nearly €50 we had high hopes - however, he said he was disappointed as was nothing special. Despite still eating our pudding, the waitress dropped the cheque on our table and really made us feel that we had to leave. This was a shame as we still had 1/2 a glass of wine and 30 mins left of our allocated 1.5hr slot!

Nice Food&Jazz

By mauchovarela |

This is a fine place to visit in SF. We were a grupo of five, and had a great experience. The bar is worth a visit by itself. Food was nice, not the best in town, but good enough. The service was personal and friendly. Jazz was beautiful, they deserve a larger stage.

Bix Never Fails To Please

By pamelah580 |

Just love the classic atmosphere and menu. Service was excellent. A must for visitors and locals who appreciate quality.

Great food but lesson learned

By Jsbpgh |

I had friends visiting from out of town and wanted to bring them here. Because they were coming from Europe they were going to be jet lagged. The only reservation that I could get on open table was for 745. The night before we were to go I called and asked if they could seat us earlier. They said to come at 7. When we got there we were told there were no tables available. The so-called hostess was unpleasant and brusque. We were about to leave at 730 when we finally got seated. Even though the food and service were very good the evening was still less than pleasant because of the way we were treated by the hostess. Lesson learned. If you can't get a reservation on line at the time you want to go, then don't go. It will be a long time, if ever, before I return.

Neighborhood Gem

By Deborah C |

Bix will take you by surprise the first time you walk in. Beautiful bar, high ceilings, lovely dining room with a grand piano. Enjoy a sidecar at the bar while waiting on your table. The menu has a variety of appetizers, and the main menu offers a nice selection of delicious fresh entrees. Very romantic!

Feeling hussled

By Notme |

Food was decent. Even though one pays top dollar, they hussle you along in order to turn the table over for a second dinner sitting. The hostess was particularly rude. Within a two minutes period after paying our check, which was more than $450 for a table of 4, the bus boy starting clearing water glasses from the table, then the waiter stopped by and took the napkins and finally the hostess stopped by and asked something to the effect if we were done. When mentioning that their collective behavior toward the end of the meal was poor, the hostess informed me that they needed to seat other clients. Perhaps they need to space the reservations more appropriately instead of rushing their partrons>

On the $$$$ side, but a lovely evening.

By Bryant |

The staff and service were all outstanding. Music was also a lovely touch and provided to the nice atmosphere. Cocktails at the bar were excellent as well (although small). Special duck appetizer was delish, and the burger is also a solid choice. The menu is a bit $$$$$, but I would recommend to anyone looking for a nice meal out on a secluded, quiet street. We will be back!

Blast from the past

By ServiceMatters86 |

Slipping into the door located off the alley, you feel transported back the 1920's. It has a deco - speakeasy feel without the associated cigarette smoke. The menu is not from the 1920's - a modern menu with wonderful choices. The service was great and the live JAZZ piano completed a terrific evening.

More than a restaurant: an exper!ence❗️

By kaibab1 |

If Jay Gatsby were in San Francisco, trying to romance Daisy Buchanan, then he probably could be found in this uniquely seductive spot, tucked halfway down a gloomy alley near the Financial District. Hard to describe, the soaring room exudes glamour (despite some tattily attired guests), romance, sultriness and sophistication. The food is spot-on California, the cocktails perfectly mixed and served, the wine list merits respect, the live jazz-age music soft and sweet and the service is faultless. I'm running out of adjectives.... for good reason. Bix is out of the ordinary and well worth a visit, especially if one has an expense account. Pricey, yes; deserving of a sixth "bullet" in TA's "overall rating?" You bet! All that's missing is the real late Bix Beiderbecke, blowing "I'm coming,Virginia" on his cornet.

Lost it's Magic

Food awful except for burger... Having been there a few times; I realized you can't always go back to some places..

Great atmosphere

By Deborah L |

This is a stunning restaurant, beautiful with impeccable service. The food is a little underwhelming for the price, but I was still glad we went. You’re paying more for the experience.

delightful ambiance

By Tom O |

Bix is not a walk by and drop in place. It is down a small side street, no parking (but valet), no sign evident from the corner. But when you go in it is a classy atmosphere in a delightfully designed space. The restaurant has a large two story open space with seating on both the ground level and upstairs. If stairs are a problem, ask for ground level searing. The lighting is subdued and booths comfortable. The music on a Saturday night adds some conversation challenge. The meal was very good. Our party of four tried a variety of dishes and all came well prepared with good sauces, where appropriate. The escargot was tasty, which I followed with another appetizer of soft shell crab. The lamb entre had a nice rich sauce. We had wine by the glass so each of us could have what we wanted. The service was good. One thing I’d flag came when we split the check. The suggested tip for each of us came with the range for the entire bill, not just for our 1/2. It was just as we were leaving we realized that while this was a good experience, it was not worth a 40% tip, and we readjusted.

Timeless and Elegant

By paul |

Tightly run operation with impeccable attention to detail, crisp service, and superb food. My wife and daughter loved the 1930s vibe and live jazz piano. I appreciated the little things: glassware choice and frequency of ice water refresh, warm and fresh buns with butter at the right temperature, cutlery placement, temperature of red wine served by the glass, etc. Cocktails: the Paloma and Gold Street were both excellent. The food: fried chicken was a home run, I wanted to lick the dish clean; potato pillows fluffy and delicious; steak really meshed well with the the cooked onion and broccolini; cod creamy and light. Highly recommended.

Great atmosphere

By CarolynCraig |

This is a great spot for dinner! I was there for a business dinner but could definitely see why many see this as a romantic vibe, reminiscent of a supper club. Nice piano music, low lights - you may need your phone light when reading the menu. Deviled eggs were amazing and they did a nice job of accommodating a vegetarian request. Lovely drinks as well. For the 12 people that I dined with all gave Bix high marks and all would return here.

Food expensive and only OK

By 1mreeeee |

We thought this was a jazz and dinner club. There was live jazz music, but it was only background music and the noisy sound-level in the room made it difficult to hear the music at all. The menu looked promising and we ordered two of their signature dishes. Both meals were very disappointing, nothing special and very expensive. Service was OK. We were not impressed with BIX and will not return.

The world’s coolest restaurant!

By riokc1800 |

The world’s coolest restaurant still has it! I’ve been many times. You feel you could be in a hip joint from an F Scott Fitzgerald book. The food and service remain top shelf. The bar reflects the legit quality of the place. It exudes hipness. The table side tar tar is worth a special trip.

Very looud, very good apps, fine mains - and an icy greeting

By SFishometome2016 |

We arrived 3 minutes early, for a 6:15 res, to an empty dining room - and were told by the icy hostess that we'd have to wait. She then shows us to the worst table in the dining room - for a res we made two months ago - and insists that's our only choice. Ok, wew're not good enough for you, we get it. A hostess is the 'manager of first impressions' and her demeanor is very off-putting. The apps are all great - well-paced - well presented from the kitchen - and tasty. The potato pillows and cheese sandwich are standouts. The generous portion of bone marrow is perfectly prepared - warning it's very rich. The mains - petrale sole, and pork chops - were well cooked, but could have used a litttle 'someting' - they're very plain. The noise level is very, very loud. I think this is best for a business dinner - rather than dinner for four. It's been around since 1988 (36 years) so much goes right here. Just not the robotic, cold hostess.

Tha ambiance is everything here. A supper club with light jazz.

By William D |

A really neat experience. The ambiance, the jazz playing in the background, and the cocktails. The service was good but I was looking for great.

Romantic

By HppyTrvllr |

Great food, atmosphere, service and jazz. A perfect place for a romantic evening in San Francisco. Highly recommended.

Couples night

By David T |

Pathetic- we were ignored and poorly served - then a hack manager in ill fitted clothes blamed us for their complete lack of civility and quality. Nothing like resting on reputation and doing nothing - despicable behavior and no responsible handling - I hope this makes any change but business and managers seem to make it inspite. No one ready to help

Love Bix

By Morag V |

Every time we visit San Francisco we book here, not disappointed Great atmosphere with live music, I love the bustle and the ambiance of this stunning restaurant Food delicious as usual and staff efficient and helpful Roll on the next time

Food average, service below

By mattpX6956SG |

A group of 15 persons was split on 2 tables with consequence of having not enough space... The service was ok - average. Each vine service ended in having more drops on the table. More than one steak ordered „medium-rare“ arrived medium resp. even well done... The level of noise is very high, discussions are difficult...

Almost perfect

By beverleyspringham |

I so want to say perfect in every way but instead I must say the food wasn’t quite up to the price and the hype. Hopefully it was just a bad night and they normally do better. The location is fabulous on a little lane in a cool district. The atmosphere inside is straight from an F. Scott Fitzgerald novel and next time I would allow myself longer to sit at the bar and enjoy the ambience. The bar tenders are old-school and utterly charming. The live music alone was worth the visit. The menu was classic, in keeping with the supper club atmosphere but the food itself was not in keeping with the prices charged. Waiting staff were attentive and we never felt rushed. The whole experience is well worth getting dressed up for.

Lively and always good energy

By sftraveling1 |

Food is always delicious, great entertainment and historic setting not to be missed. We love getting a seat near the piano and having a long leisurely dinner.

Great experience

While in town for a conference, my colleague and I ate at BIX for dinner. I really enjoyed their pork chop. Atmosphere was great.

Perfect 50th Anniversary Dinner

By sharonannie22 |

We did a lot of research to choose a restaurant for our anniversary celebration in San Francisco and BIX was the perfect selection. The sort of art deco speakeasy supper club decor on two levels is gorgeous. We were seated on the upper level with a great view of the entire restaurant. Service was impeccable and the food was delicious. We enjoyed the smoked trout salad, Massachusetts Sea Scallops, Lobster Spaghetti and the Gold St. Foster for dessert. The recorded and then live jazz background music adds to the whole vibe. The atmosphere is very lively and reservations are a must. Don't miss this place!

You Want Today's Version of a Supper Club?

By TxRose75 |

Bix Restaurant is today's version of the old-fashioned supper club feel. It also reminds one of the "great place on an alley" former times in San Francisco. You enter from the alley-like Gold Street into an atmosphere worthy of dressing up. The main floor has a lengthy attractive bar while the room's dining tables are close together with booths ringing the room. Open stairs lead to a balcony around two sides of the main room, all of which is low lit, creating an intimate and lively sense of time from the past. Against one wall is where the nightly live music is played, a pianist with a vocalist or a trio, jazz being the soup creating the ambiance. We love the food, the drinks, the whole enchilada, but it's not Mexican food. My favorite happens to be the best steak tartare in town!

Great atmosphere at Bix

By 52phantom |

We enjoyed Bix very much, they did everything well. Restaurant has good space, staff very professional, food good - but expensive overall. You get what you pay for!

Lobster Spaghetti & Live Jazz

By dancethrulife |

The level of service from host stand to table, the ambience, decor, live jazz, and of course food and drink are absolutely top notch at Bix. What a fabulous experience, I can't wait to go back. We had a late dinner reservation, but arrived a bit early on purpose to enjoy a cocktail and the live jazz. Excellent cocktails and extensive wine list. Our server was great, friendly and interested in making sure we each selected starters and a main course we would really enjoy. You must try the lobster spaghetti! Just a lovely dining experience all the way around.

It will not disappoint!

By Clare |

This place exceeded our expectations. After reading reviews, I wasn’t sure what to expect but we had the most amazing time. Our coats were taken at check in, we waited at the bar until our table was ready and the bartender was extremely friendly. Drinks were great too! We were seated at our table and they brought a beautiful happy birthday card for my husband. Our food was amazing. We go to a lot of Michelin star places and places with live music. The prices were not at all overpriced. We were surprised by our final bill actually. It seems a lot of people unfairly reviewed this place because where there’s live music, you usually have a set time for the table to accommodate other reservations. Also, the prices are just right for the aesthetic and ambiance of this place. We actually expected it to be a bit more. Service was top tier. He checked on us but never too much and was friendly and knowledgeable. We just kept asking ourselves why this was the first time we’d come. Now we know this place is here, we can’t wait to come back! The jazz was great as well!

Fantastic place for cocktails!

By Maureen L |

We stopped in at Bix for a night cap. What a gorgeous venue! It's a glamorous Art Deco restaurant with live music and exceptional cocktails. Can't wait to go back for dinner!

I don't like anything about Bix

By endofcity |

Made a reservation, turned up on time, table not ready. Waited 45 mins and table still not ready. Arrogant staff, who couldn't have cared less. Waste of time.

Great atmosphere, great food

By Katie_G107 |

I loved Bix! We had a wonderful evening here. The atmosphere is great and the food is yummy. We both ordered the lobster spaghetti and shared a lovely bottle of wine. The live music playing while we ate was just so lovely! We had a drinks at the bar afterwards – be warned, the cocktails are really strong. The wait staff and bar staff were friendly and helpful. I would highly recommend going to Bix if you are visiting SF – we absolutely loved it!

Great old fashioned restaurant with light jazz and an impressive bar

By PrincessMFT |

We booked ahead for this and got a great table right by the piano and base player. Service was good and the menu was big enough to find a few good options which were very well cooked and tasty. Wine list was also quite good. The bar is massive with just about every type of liquor you can think of on display. Lighting and atmosphere is very romantic, especially with the lovely music.

A little bit disappointing

By weirdflamingo |

To begin with the positive: the staff is very well trained, the setting (bar, restaurant, music) is beautiful, the location itself intriguingly out-of-the way. The food wasn't wonderful. One of us had the lamb steak (small), another the scallops (nothing special), 2 others pork (OK but not great). My starter was steak tartare. Only someone who's never had the genuine article as prepared in France would find this version acceptable. I thought it was laughable. Desserts: a sorbet; bread pudding smothered in chocolate; some kind of banana/ice cream/chocolate concoction---all OK but nothing you wouldn't get at a restaurant with many fewer stars than Bix. I was both sorry and disappointed that a restaurant that I remembered as being much better had become so run-of-the mill, yet still with all the accoutrements of its former elegance.

A real find!

By See K |

Bix is located down a small side alley. I loved the location already! Inside it was very nicely decorated in a retro/deco style complete with a grand piano for a jazz pianist. The lighting was a little too dim though. We had cocktails & they were fabulous! We were not looking for a big meal and the small plates were ideal. The bone marrow was particularly excellent and the bread tasty and fresh. The staff was very friendly and the service quick and efficient. It is not cheap but overall a great experience!

Formal but enjoyable

By Travellover6128 |

We had drinks at the bar here. It's a wonderful atmosphere and space and there is a great selection of drinks, although they are on the pricey side. My only criticism was that we felt slightly rushed at the bar. Our check was brought without even asking us if we wanted a second drink. i would however like to go back for food, as the menu and dished looked delicious.

Above and Beyond!

By MrHappyTravels |

This restaurant is absolutely stellar. From the atmosphere and service, to the food it is a wonderful experience. It's truly a classic jazz supper club. Located down a seemingly plain alleyway, if you didn't see the neon sign you would walk right by the place. The location is great needless to say. We were seated upstairs in a booth for the four of us with a nice view of the piano. The service is impeccable from the service staff to the gentleman who fills the water glasses. The atmosphere feels very old world and the decor is brilliant. Now onto the food. We started out with a dozen of the Kumamoto Oysters which are now my favorite. My wife even liked them and she's not an oyster freak like myself. We then moved onto a couple of appetizers which consisted of the steak tartare and the potato pillows, both were absolutely to die for. For our main entrees we had the Chicken Hash à la Bix, Massachusetts Sea Scallops and a Blackened Cod dish. This is fine dining at it's best, truly remarkable. We will remember this place for years to come and the next time we're in town this will definitely be a must stop.

New favourite

By AussTrave11er2001 |

I cannot fault this place. No idea how, but our concierge got us a same day reservation here for dinner and we all had the best time. Sublime food and wine but what makes this place really special is the beautiful setting (check out the pictures - speakeasy style but still very elegant) as well as of course the live jazz. This made the night for us not just another dinner but a really special night out. Our group had people in their 20s, 30s and 60s and everyone loved it! It's places like this that make San Francisco such a classic city

SF Institution

Bix is quintessential SF dining. Excellent environment, great food and professional service. It’s not on the cutting edge of trendy food fashion but comfortably familiar and reliably excellent. Love this place. Love the amazing Mark Stock painting g!

Nix the Bix

By VisitingProfessor_29 |

Bix is hidden off Gold Street and looks a bit like a speak easy when you first walk in. The room is nice and very romantic with a grand piano playing in the background. We were seated promptly and service started out great. We ordered drinks, appetizers and later entrees. Drinks came quickly and were great. We shared two of their specialty appetizers - the devilled eggs and potato pillows. The eggs were very good. However the pillows seemed nothing more than greasy tator tots with a bit of cream Fraiche and roe caviar. The mains (lobster spaghetti and trout almondine) came next. The spaghetti was fine but the trout was a mess of ingredients and it did not work well together. Suddenly our server must have been sentenced to Siberia for there was an extremely long wait until the came for desert orders. After ordering she returned to Siberia - well lets just say that it took a very long time. Then another wait to pay the check. Not sure what happened but there clearly was a gap in service. Considering the high prices, this was not money well spent.

Wonderful Dining Experience!

By DBLT2012 |

The ambiance of the restaurant was set up like an old prohibition style motif with a live jazz band and upscale flair. The mood is relaxed but upbeat. The low lighting added to the mood making it a great venue to bring your date out for a romantic evening. I took my wife and she absolutely loved it! The food was fantastic. I had the duck and my wife had the porkchop. The host, and waitress was prompt and attentive always there to cater to our every request. I definitely recommend anyone visiting San Francisco to book reservations to this spot!

Cool venue, great food, attentive service

By Jose F |

Love this Art Deco inspired restaurant. Great cocktails. I like sitting upstairs to have a better view of the venue. All the appetizers are amazing, I had the open gave burger for dinner.

Just lovely

By adschlaht |

Beautiful restaurant with Art Deco decor and live jazz. The food was excellent. We had the halibut and it was awesome! We came here for drinks a few years ago and were eager to try it for dinner. Did not disappoint!

Great atmosphere

By LaurenJeanne2013 |

Hidden-away location makes this place feel even more special than it already is. Gorgeous old-fashioned space with 2-story-high ceiling, speak-easy style lighting, live music (lounge/piano). Excellent wait staff and very good -- but not excellent -- food. Noisy.

Good but I remember it being better

By Engbandh |

Service is very good and the piano in the background was lovely. Food was good but didn’t match the service and environment.

Below average for the price

By David |

The food was ok but nothing special. I had the tuna (very good), prawn linguini (average) and the chocolate bread pudding (terrible) The decor was nice and the staff attentive but at this price I would have expected far better food - I would have said that it was no better than your average mid-priced family restaurant. I wouldn't go back and was very glad that I wasn't paying

deviled eggs & pana cotta were my favorite even tho the lamb was pretty yummy too!

By fresnotraveler2 |

We were skeptical about the deviled eggs with truffle - but WOW these were pretty awesome. very light and fluffy - only 4 egg halves but was just enough for the two of us. We each had the lamb (may have been a special?) and it was very tasty and we finished with panna cotta that was excellent and light but packed with flavor. We also had a wonderful bottle of Du Mol Russin River Syrah 2014 that was very good.

Bix for the Win!

By Patrick McGee |

Walking down the alley to 56 Gold could it be? It is like walking into another world. The bar dominates the entrance and beckons all to start the experience off correctly. This leads right into dinner where you can select your wine of choice from an incredible list, it is helpful no doubt that Napa is so close. I've been fortunate to visit Bix five or six times over the years and the food is just scrumptious. To top it off the service is what you would expect, nothing but the best. Highest quality!

A Bit Over the Top

By Ronn B |

We were taken here by a local that likes to indulge in more speedy venues. Bix, you could tell, hosts lots of high rollers and at first I was really taken with it, but it got really crowded and we were jammed in by tables and chairs and folks used to having things their way. I think I ordered badly because the swordfish was just underwhelming. However, others at our table were quite pleased. I don't know that I would go there again. For the money I think there are better places in SF. Four stars because of the pomp.

Amazing evening

By Mary B |

We had a fantastic evening at Bix. Great jazz trio plus extremely good quality food and wine. Service was excellent - welcoming, friendly, attentive. A 'must visit' place in San Francisco

BIX is a Gem!

By Daniel M |

BIX is a hidden gem in San Francisco's financial district. If you are looking for a place to dine with class, but without the exorbitant cost, this is it. The ornate bar, wall-length mural, and piano jazz provided an ambience of the Roaring Twenties. Food and service were outstanding—order the Gold St. Foster (Bananas Foster) for dessert!

San Francisco Classic

By Thomas K |

Find out when they are open for lunch, you won't regret it. Try to sit upstairs with the view of the 19320ies bar and frescos. Very friendly and competent service and always good food. Interesting appetizers and choice mains. This is such a comfortable place to sit, drink and talk.

France in ‘Frisco

By RobinFGriffiths |

This French-themed restaurant was humming with full tables and jazz. Superb ambience and evocative decor. The food was outstanding and beautifully presented. The wine list was extensive and well priced. The staff were attentive and professional. A wonderful dining experience!

It was OK, the setting was better than the man courses.

By Charlie W |

I went to BIX on a recommendation. The restaurant has a lovely atmosphere, in a beautiful setting. Overall the service was very very good. The starter (Foie gras as the Special) was excellent. The BIX CHICKEN HASH À LA SPRING was disappointing: it lacked flavour and depth.

Throw back to a bygone era

By mrsfroge |

Love the charm of this place. We had a round booth downstairs close enough to the piano player but not so close that we couldn't carry on a conversation. Both of us had fish that was prepared perfectly. Plus they really do cocktails correctly. This is not a typical SFO restaurant. You feel as if you have stepped back into the jazz era.

Pleasant.

By Courtney54476 |

While the restaurant’s setting was quaint...lovely jazz playing through out dinner...I wasn’t overly impressed with the menu selections. In fact, I was somewhat disappointed because I expected the menu to be the same as what I saw on Open Table when we booked our reservation only it wasn’t. Almost every item I had seen on the app was no where to be found on the restaurant’s menu once we arrived...so that was a little bit of a bummer.

Amazing

So far the best Resto I have been to in SF area. Both classy, tasty, excellent atmosphere. No tourists, just locals, Highly recommended!

Interesting Anniversary Dinner.

By 2Klecks |

My husband chose this place based on TripAdvisor reviews for our 36th wedding anniversary dinner. We took Uber so we wouldn't have to worry about drinking and driving. We arrived on time for a 6:30 pm reservation. The entry was small, crowded, loud and busy. We were seated after just a couple of minutes. The evening kind of went downhill from there. Biggest complaint was way too much noise. We were seated at a table for two but couldn't hear each other talk without yelling at each other. Not a good event! The food was very good. I had the pork chop and it was large and delicious. My husband had the scallops with black truffle fritters and it was delicious. Were it not for the over-the-top noise, this could have been a nice evening. Can't recommend it if you're looking for a romantic evening.b

Horrible service, horrible food, extremely high prices

By Rhonda K |

I actually cannot believe the positive reviews on this company. We came with 5 couples all celebrating our anniversaries. Pre-booked weeks in advance… Dressed up! The waiter seemed to be on something talking loud and fast and jittery. Screwed up up our drinks, appies and entrees…. Elbowed one of our friend who n the head over 10 times as he went past her… our food was not fantastic at all for the EXTREMELY high prices. Lobster spaghetti was unexpectedly spicy and I normally like spicy things. Mashed potatoes were so blah. Anyway we had fun because we are fun people but all in all I feel I should warn other people. Don’t waste your money. Then told us there was 20% gratuity added automatically and that they could split the bill 3 ways but not 5….the manger came and helped us out but the guy who messed up all the orders was outrageously upset. Just a weird experience considering the high end prices and u we expectations.

Spectacular meal

We had a business dinner at Bix and were blown away. The food was amazing and interesting, the service excellent and the whole vibe relaxed and inviting. If you are looking for an interesting menu with a fun atmosphere this is a great place.

Good food, too loud

By 61_IslandHopper |

We had dinner with colleagues from business here. The restaurant is downtown San Francisco and maintains valet parking. The place was crowded despite it was a Thursday night and we were glad we had done a reservation. Guests kept pouring in until after 9 pm. Many guests were well dressed and the restaurant is obviously very popular. It has a historic touch to it. There is a very nice bar area connected to the restaurant and there was live music. For me however the place is too dark and way too loud! We had a plate with different starters and all other mains. The food was very good, however also expensive. The service was very attentive and very nice as well. The menu does not offer a very big choice, however the wine and drink selection is rather complete. If you like some good food and don’t really care about a quiet setting you might be at the right spot there.

Step back in time into a speakeasy

By JVM-Milford-MI |

This place is awesome. Located down an alley in the financial district, you’ll miss the inconspicuous entrance unless you’re looking for it. Once you step inside you are in a place with a classic feel a ton of character. Chilled glasses and bottles of champagne in ice buckets line the bar. The dining room has two levels inside, appropriately lit to create the atmosphere, offering craft cocktails and an impressive wine list. We sat at the bar and enjoyed some suburb appetizers and great service from the bartender. We will definitely be back again. Seek this place out.

A true supper club

By Kay R |

This was my second 'birthday dinner' at Bix and it was just as wonderful as the previous one. We started with cocktails at the bar where the attention to detail is impressive and appreciated. When it was time to be seated, we were offered a choice of tables; they seemed to know it was a special occasion and wanted us to be happy. Service was excellent. We started with oysters, then the endive and feta salad. The black cod and pork chop were both delicious. And the lovely music...such a sophisticated atmosphere ! Energetic but not too noisy to converse in normal voices. Bix is a San Francisco treasure in my opinion.

So much $$$$$ so little food

By KMG |

I've never spent so much money and received so little food. We had the scallops and there were 3 tiny scallops, a smear of butternut squash puree, and something acidic and pickled. The al a carte veggies were to have been en famile (sharable) yet were a single serving. It was disappointing and not worth the money at all.

Great atmosphere

We went here on Christmas eve for a couples dinner. Nice music and great service. Food was excellent.

Nice

My friend and I ate here this past week. We shared the potato pillows, BIX chicken bites, and the sword fish. Nice tasting food a bit on the pricey side.

Nice place to have dinner

We enjoyed the nice ambiance of the restaurant as well as the very good service. the live music was very good. we enjoyed the cauliflower soap, the ceviche and the lamb

Casual biz dinner

By ColeTraveler999 |

Located on a small side street in SF's financial district, Bix is an unexpected treat; fun and light hearted with a jazzy vibe. Food is good, not great but it is the totality of the 'Bix' experience that wins it 4 stars...I encourage you to go!

My parents 50th anniversary

By 425jasonv |

Me and my girlfriend came early to make sure everything was set for my parents 50th. We sat at the bar and we had 2 glasses of wine. All my family showed up and they sat 12 of use. The service was fantastic and the waitress explain the specials and our appetizers were delicious and we talked and laughed and we all had a wonderful time! Our dinners came and everyone enjoyed what they picked. Then the staff comes out with a cake for my parents 50th and everyone in Bix’s was clapping and congratulating my parents which made it very special for them. I recommend Bix’s to any one who wants to go to just go to the bar and just get food and drink (the bar is very long). You will enjoy the ambience, the food & drinks, and the great service you get from the staff! Cheers

Highly recommend

By S0muchfun |

Our clients suggested this restaurant to meet. As our Uber headed down a dark alley I wasn’t sure where we were going. We were greeted at the door and it was like a hole hidden world opened up inside. We were early so we grabbed a couple of cocktails and met a great bartender who made us feel like regulars. Once the other couple arrived we headed up the stairs to a table overlooking the restaurant. What a treat! The live music (but where we were sitting it was not noisy at all), delicious food (we all had something different and all enjoyed it and ate every bite). Definitely our new favorite restaurant when visiting San Francisco.

Classic San Francisco

By Matthew R |

Wow! So many incredible things to say about this restaurant. I absolutely loved the 1930s feel. The food is amazing - not a bad choice on the menu. The service was excellent and very friendly. Loved the live music which was very much in-line with the decor and vibe of the restaurant. Everyone should experience going to dinner here! I had the pork chop and it was delicious!

Classic Martini Lunch

By gropius19 |

Bix is one of the last vestiges of Herb Caen-style San Francisco. When in town, I love to lunch on a Bix Burger and a perfectly made gin martini at the bar. Please note though, they are only open for lunch on Fridays. Once you find the restaurant down quiet Gold Alley, you will be rewarded with a classic, sophisticated, jazz-age space. Bartenders in starched white coats expertly concoct the perfect martini to wash down your burger - I recommend gin. Friday lunchtime is never too crowded and you will be surrounded by employees of the nearby ad agencies and creative businesses in Jackson Square. This is the perfect spot to get a feel of the old San Francisco that is slowly fading away.

After dinner drinks

By rdodge2 |

This place is is just fun. It is located down a small alley which is a little unnerving when you are walking but adds to the charm. Once inside it was like time travel back to the 50’s. Great murals on the walls, jazz band and a great bar. We went for a few cocktails and listen to the band. Bar tender was great and pleasant to talk with. Only saw the food leaving the kitchen not visually it looked excellent. I observed the waiters and other staff visually inspect glass and silver ware to insure it was flawless. This small attention to details you know everything is done properly.

Good dinner

By Kevin D |

Customer dinner, 7 of us had a good dinner, wait staff was ok but really did not go out of the way to make the night special. The food however was excellent.

"Swank" is the right adjective

By James S |

The moment I walked in I used the adjective "swank," which I later saw everyone uses, and for good reason. Located off a small alley, Bix has the delightful vibe of an urban supper club circa 1950 (not that I was born then, but based on black-and-white movies.). I wouldn't have felt over dressed in a tuxedo or dinner jacket (not that anyone except waiters were wearing one.) The atmosphere cries out for a cocktail (or two), which are excellent, and afterwards, who cares whether the food is cutting edge? The menu, too, is a throwback to American cuisine pre-Julia Child. (I was surprised to find no steak on the menu, but there was a very good pork chop.) The wine list had some very nice Bordeaux and Burgundies at very reasonable prices. All-in-all a wonderful night on the town

Food needs improvement

By Sean F |

BIX has long been on our radar. We had heard wonderful things but were a bit disappointed. First the positive. The atmosphere, music, service, and cocktails are amazing. You literally feel like your in the heart of the roaring 20’s. One of the best atmospheres I have encountered in a restaurant in some time. Sadly, the quality of the food, especially for what they are charging for it, is severely lacking. We started with the “Truffled Cheese “Croques”. Sounds wonderful! But in reality they cut up a grilled cheese sandwich with some caramelized onions inside and it was very dry. For our mains we had the BIX chicken hash and House Made Spaghetti. The hash was simply two fried chicken patties, like something you find in a school cafeteria, in a rather good cream sauce. The spaghetti lacked any kind of real flavor and was rather bland. We also ordered whipped mashed potatoes as a side. They had absolutely no seasoning or flavor….simply potatoes whipped up. No butter, salt…..nothing. So, we were very disappointed with the food. Again, the atmosphere, service and cocktails were outstanding. Maybe it was an off night for them, no idea. However, we would likely not return….unless it was just for drinks.

Dress-up date night

By Lisa M |

Pleasantly surprised! Delicious food, great service and swanky-retro ambiance. My only complaints: We had to wait almost 20 minutes after our reservation time to be seated, and the hostess didn't apologize, and they really need to put up velvet curtains during the winter to separate the entrance from the bar and dining room. The cold air funnels through the bar and downstairs dining area every time the front door is opened. It was very distracting and uncomfortable during the meal. This place is a step back in time. Fun to put on a glittery dress and go out on the town.

SPECTACULAR

By Str8Review |

This is my favorite restaurant in San Francisco. It's a hidden gem. The atmosphere is almost that of a roaring 20's supper club. The music is a nice addition. The food is always great and the staff friendly and efficient. We visit Bix every time we are in the city. Make sure to put it on your list of places to go.

Great Place for an Anniversary

By KnickerbockerJones |

I had an excellent anniversary dinner with my husband. He picked the place. We had the Potato Pillows, Deviled Eggs, Ham and Cheese “Croques” and Main Diver Scallops to start. Followed by our main course, Crab Tagliatelle and Duroc Pork Chop with a side of mashed potatoes. For dessert, Pumpkin Crème Brûlée and Gold St. Fosters. All of this was with a half bottle of Rombauer Chardonnay with a few other cocktails along with it. The food was delicious. The portions were great because you did not feel over stuffed and had enough room for all of the courses. The only downside which was not worth taking away any stars was how loud it was. My husband was sitting next to me and we had to raise our voices to be able to listen to each other. Other than that it was a wonderful place to have a meal. I will be leaving this review on the other platforms I use.

One of My Favorite Places

By Jackie O |

Each time I'm in SF I make a point to go to Bix. Definitely not cheap, but well worth it. Jazz piano, jazz singer, art deco interior in a historical Jackson Square building plus creative food makes it worthwhile! The entry feels like an old speakeasy in an alley, and the wait staff is fantastic. Classic bartender who can make probably anything you desire. Dress to impress.

Wanted to love it

By madasa1024 |

First night arrival after cross country flight. Admittedly tired. Had made reservation and when arrived was seated promptly in a center very dark very noisy table. Asked host to move upstairs twice said not available even with tables clearly available. Manager must have been sharp and step in and thankfully moved to a quieter upstairs location. My salmon was excellent, wife’s sea bass dry and daughters chicken hash- weird. Service was professional. Nice bottle of kistler and an excellent female jazz singer made the finish pleasant. One of my brothers favorite places and I can see why people like it here and perhaps we would have more under different circumstances. Cool location so maybe just us.

We felt like we were in an old movie... beautiful atmosphere

By Jessica210389 |

We have recently spent a few days in San Fran as part of our honeymoon. Our hotel concierge recommended BIX to us for our first evening in San Fran and it did not disappoint. The atmosphere and staff were fantastic and our waiter was on hand whenever we needed him. The food wasn’t much to go by, but we’ve found that everywhere we’ve eaten in the US, we are spoilt being British and being so close to Europe and the spectacular cuisines we find over there. Overall a great evening, beautiful wine, live music, mediocre food and an evening that we will cherish.

Speakeasy charm with great live jazz and an unbelievable dining experience.

By mrfixit48 |

Picking this place was a roll of the dice - literally!! And it was lucky 7s the whole night!!! It's a little hard to find but our Uber driver got us there on time for our reservation - in fact, early enough to enjoy a cocktail and the music before being seated. We were lucky enough to get a table next to the trio that was playing. The music inspired us to get up and dance with another couple until we were informed that that was illegal because we were blocking the traffic pattern.

The Way it Once Was

By 007BrianB |

My wife and I attended the Bix for dinner on Saturday, March 2/19. This place is very difficult as we discovered, too get a reservation on a Friday or Saturday night. We started calling a week to 10 days before we arrived in San Francisco. Using the internet booking service was proving futile unless we wanted to eat at 10:00 PM. Our Concierge at the Fairmont (Thomas Wolfe) came to the rescue and got us in for 6:30. We had a wonderful table (booth) on the mezzanine floor with a great view of the bar, piano player and the overall great atmosphere. this place oozes atmosphere and looking around and then at the full mural behind the bar - made me feel like we were in Casablanca or any of the great supper clubs of the 40's and 50's. Even the touch of the piano just topped it off. Great server Hortje and his colleagues certainly looked the part and practiced the art of service to a T!! The menu is small but has a varied list of choices. We had the Lobster Spaghetti which we were told had been on the menu for 30 years. The place has a huge wine menu. The prices are $$$$ high but the service, atmosphere (and jazz trio that starts around 8:30) help to accept the price. The food is very well done and the portions are reasonable! this place is off a little alley that also adds to the experience. All in all a great find. there is a reason it has been around for 30+ years. They do it right!

Romantic Setting with Great Food

By OnAir813933 |

A somewhat of a hidden gem, longstanding lovely bar, perfectly made martinis and wonderful food. Grab a booth up top, and enjoy the jazz downstairs......

Decent for city dinning

By vailwood |

A typical San Francisco restaurant, carnivores welcome, decent wine menu and professional staff. The layout is interesting with two levels of seating, in sufficient space on the table and comfortable chairs. There are some innovative dishes such as black truffle stuffed hamburger, all and all good and plenty, the desert are good. If you are staying or living in the city, go there, but not worth the drive to the city. After a meal, great art window shopping.

Valentine’s Day Treat

By sarak |

Came to this hidden gem on Valentine’s Day and wow! We hung out at the bar first and enjoyed the wine and bar snacks! Next we got the lobster rolls and steak with mashed potatoes and wow! The steak was cooked perfectly. Definitely a steak house restaurant!

Back to the good old days - perfect!

By Michael L |

So refreshing to go to a restaurant that has not lost its attention to its guests, from a wonderful grand piano playing, to personal and profession waitstaff. And the food, absolutely spot on. The real deal for a great dining experience in San Francisco, no shortcuts. Hard to say that about many of the formerly finer restaurants

Absolutely outstanding!!

By RDTOPTORINCON |

This restaurant is everything you could possibly want in a jazz club… Excellent food, outstanding service, beautiful music, wonderful lighting, awesome interior, and everybody is in a good mood and truly enjoying themselves. This makes for a very memorable dinner… Don’t hesitate ... you will love it!

Old fashioned restaurant with very nice live jazz music. Yes the place does get noisy but which one doesn't in SF! The food was excellent and our waiter very friendly. Definitely worth a visit when in SF

Great service & dining room but menu needs refresh

By Redline325 |

Dined at Bix on a Friday night. Arrived at reservation time and was seated right away at a great table on the main floor. The room is beautiful, throwback to the 20's. Service was excellent, mixed drinks came quickly. Great service throughout the meal. For starters we ordered the fried chicken and Dungeness crab rolls. The fried chicken was lightly battered almost tempura style. It's basically a boneless chicken wing in General Tso sauce. Fine but unremarkable. The crab roll was 4 small pieces with not enough crab to match the roll, so mostly tasted like bread. We also wound up with deviled eggs on the house since the server raved about the lobster spaghetti they are known for. We ordered that to find out a few minutes later they ran out of lobster. The eggs were bland and drenched in truffle oil. The menu says "truffle" which is not truffle oil....more on that later. Our main course was the duck breast and pork chop. More truffle oil served with the duck. Just average here, good quality protein but pretty basic presentation and flavor. We also wound up with a free order of French fries since I think the server could tell we were not eating much. Fries were soggy and covered in truffle oil. Please get rid of the truffle oil on everything! It's not truffles! Just used to cover up average bland food with some faux sense of sophistication. So many great meals in SF it's a bummer to get a medicore one, espically at these prices.

Pure Class

By Back_to_Sandringham |

I had dinner here on the strong recommendation of the concierge at the Hilton Union Square. What a terrific restaurant. The entrance is down a dark little alleyway and is only signposted by a small neon sign in bright pink overhead. Once inside it is like something out of the Prohibition. A beautiful lavish old-school room with fantastic paintings, a gorgeous long bar, and a mezzanine with additional tables. The live jazz was at just the right volume: low enough that you could have a conversation over it, but high enough to provide atmosphere. The food was excellent, and the wine list had some very reasonable prices on it. A complete slam dunk. I will definitely be back.

Feel like a local at this really special place!

By Toni I |

Bix was recommended to us by friends who live in San Francisco as being one of their favorite places and it certainly did not disappoint. This is definitely not touristy and is rather like a step back in time when supper clubs were popular. The menu was both varied and interesting, but you might need to use your phone flashlight to read it, as it is very low light in there! Nonetheless, the atmosphere is elegant and sophisticated, yet there doesn't appear to be a dress code, so it's not intimidating in the least. The bar with it's beautiful murals was a happening scene and the tables were completely full by the time we ate around 7:00. We had a wonderful time and highly recommend this off-the-beaten path restaurant.

We felt rushed

By Aha444 |

We went to this restaurant after going there for a drink a couple years ago. We figured we'd give it a shot. I was pretty busy, and I will say the food was pretty good. Nothing incredible, but pretty good. The problem is they're short staffed, and when you get there you feel like you're being rushed from the beginning. In fact, we were told we were taking too long at the end, and we needed to make room for another table. They have live music, but the problem is the schedule is inaccurate. So we actually went there to hear some jazz and the saxophone player, but by the time we finally had to leave, he still had not started. When you're spending this much money at a restaurant you don't want to feel rushed, and we did pretty much the entire time. They just need to hire more people and I guess that's the problem, but we won't actually be back to see it. Thanks.

Bix is mixed

By baywanderer |

Went on a Saturday night - Jazz combo night. Very noisy, very busy. Posh environment. Salad was sloppy and hamburger cooked medium well, I ordered medium rare. Sent it back was fine second time around. A fine night out experience but more crowded and somewhat less classy than I expected, Price wise, it was reasonable value for San Francisco. Service was efficient but nothing more.

One of the Best in Town

By ralphw447 |

Back in 1988 this was a new spot with a hip vibe, great food, terrific live music and a wonderful atmosphere. Well 30 years later this is still one of my favorite restaurants whenever I visit San Francisco. The chef is still keeping it fresh with the current menu-very tasty stuff. Friendly staff great drinks all down a little quiet ally in the middle of all those skyscrapers.

Hipster Paridise

By Ted K |

Bix always had a feeling of decadence. I literally was one of the establishment's first and most regular customers back in ancient history - 1988. I often walked home via Gold Street and was intrigued while it was under construction. Then, like now, it felt like stepping back in time to enter a "Thin Man" movie. The cocktails and food at the beginning were simply indulgent and fabulous. Probably the best date restaurant in SF. Oh the horror, the internet was in its infancy and mobile phones were basically walkie talkies so word of the awesomeness of Bix spread slowly. You could even arrive on a weekend, get a table upstairs and listen to some great Jazz. Hours later it was a rude transition back to the late 1980's as you walked out the front door. Fast forward to now. I have been back to Bix several times in the last couple of years. The “time machine” is broken. Stopped by Thursday night this week. The place was completely jammed. Every table was full, many with what seemed like too many chairs, and the bar area was ridiculous. Wall to wall sardines. And about three quarters of the clientele were male hipsters, complete with closely trimmed beards. My frustration with the current patrons is that they don't seem to be there to experience the restaurant, rather to be part of a scene and to talk loudly. Forget completely about listening to the amazing jazz musicians who still perform there. You can't hear them at all above the super loud conversation happening everywhere. It used to be the people in the restaurant had respect for the musicians and the music and would speak softly when the music was being performed. No more. OK, OK, yes. When I used to frequent Bix in the late 80's I most likely fell into some label of whatever 30 something men were called back then. But the difference is back then the patrons of Bix were mixed. Men AND women of all ages and backgrounds. It felt less like a scene and more like, well, an amazing dinner restaurant. People went for the food and the music. I hear you say, a restaurant can’t choose and discriminate about who frequents it and I’d offer that’s a very good thing. However, Bix could manage significantly better the number around the bar and instigate ways to drop the noise level many decibels. So you might ask, what about the food? Well, I ate there with clients a few months back and I have had appetizers and drinks at the bar on a few separate occasions as well. At our recent dinner, we had drinks, wine, appetizers, main courses and desserts. And we all tried each other's selections. Bottom line, we rated it a B-. Bix has never been inexpensive but unless you are on an expense account it's a lot of cheese for food that doesn’t quite hit the good grade. It felt like the kitchen was simply going through the motions. No wows at all. There used to be wows aplenty. Service was solid but it has lost that air of class that used to match the rest of the experience. Bix has all the ingredients to be great. Location, architecture and decor, music, history and now tenure but it just feels like it needs a reboot. Bring back the passion, focus and magic. Or leave it the way it is and keep collecting on indistinguishable scene that is now Bix. Unless something changes I am on the hunt for a new time machine.

Overpriced and uninspired

By Raymond G |

We were 4 for dinner. Nice location and well seated next to the kitchen. Menu choices adequate but starters were spitefully minimal and overpriced . Potato pillows were minuscule and unmemorable. Waldorf salad like Faulty Towers, small enough to be fresh out of Waldorf. Deviled eggs were tasty and devilishly discreet. Mains were pricy and fish well cooked but no accouterments and the vegetarian option pasta was rather taste deficient. We made a wrong wine choice of Napa Sauvignon Blanc which at $60 was Chardonnay in disguise. Not nice. Fries ordered did not arrive until meal over and tea ordered was 40 minutes late. For a meal over $265 this was very disappointing. We had a much better meal at Fisherman’s Wharf for lunch for almost a third of the price. Music nice but so loud we had to shout to each other. Not a pleasant experience.

What a wonderful dinner. We started with the cocktail meatballs in marinara. They were exquisite. The Caesar salad was terrific. For our entrees, my husband had the peppercorn-crusted New York strip which was cooked to perfection. I had the lobster spaghetti which was very tasty. All the while there was piano playing in the background. A very enjoyable evening. We would definitely go back.

Bix is an enjoyable experience. We were satisfied on every level; great food and wine selections, great service and live music. There is enough elbow room so that diners are not on top of one another. I have enjoyed Bix on past visits and will return in the future.

classic jazz spot in north beach/jackson square

By OnAir27158580247 |

What a great bar/restaurant. It's the kind of place you can't really find in SF. It almost feels like being in a movie. They have live jazz and a great cocktail bar. I've never eaten dinner there, but I've heard the food is good. It's very "classic" feeling. Most of the people I've met there have been in SF forever. You can dress up or be casual.

A great find.

Located on a quiet side street in financial district of San Francisco this restaurant impressed. Fabulous old time bar and great ambience. Service was attentive and food was good, wine list good. The room was just a little too dark, granted they were try to give patrons the speakeasy feel. Decibel level a bit high. Will definitely be back. My kind of old time place to drink or dine.

Best Restaurant in SF!

By FoodGuru914 |

BIX is my favorite restaurant in the city. It is located in an alleyway in the Financial District of San Francisco. Bix is a rather large restaurant, having an upstairs and a downstairs. Both times I have been here, there has been soothing live music that is perfectly relying to listen to during a meal. About the food: I started with the steak tartar, and than had the truffle burger as my entree. I understand that many people do not like beef tartar. If you don't order it, please, please, be sure to try the burger! I am sure that it will not disappoint! Enjoy BIX!

Bix - a shadow of its former self

By BiciFan |

Sigh….. I have been to Bix many times over the years. While my review is focused on my most recent dining experience, it also encapsulates perspective from 20+ years of dining here. In a nutshell: the physical restaurant itself is quite nice, the service is rushed and the food is perfectly adequate. The appetizers are extremely expensive for what you get. My $13 Caesar salad had precisely 4 romaine lettuce leaves to go with the croutons and dressing. Really? Is there a shortage on lettuce? The $29 burger, while good, has nothing special enough about it to justify the price. I can say the same for the bulk of the menu. Running a business in San Francisco is expensive; I get it. I support local restaurants and typically leave a 25-35% tip, particularly when I get the magic combo of great food and great service. Frankly, I would not grouse about prices at Bix if not for one issue: service. Good service or mediocre service both cost the restaurant the same. Over the years, the quality of service at Bix continues to drop. I do not go to a higher end restaurant with the expectation that the staff will try to turn a dinner table in 60 min or less. My dinner was pressed from beginning to end by both staff and management and was really off-putting. That said, the most interesting part came at the end. Within moments of delivering dessert and coffee, the bill was presented. (We had not asked for the bill.) When neither my dinner companion nor I instantly put up a credit card, the waiter started coming by every few minutes and picking up the folio. After a few attempts, the manager took over. Never once were we asked if we would like more coffee or water. I wish I could say this was the first time I had received less than optimal service. Sadly, this is not the case. Additionally, for the first time since the late 1980’s, tonight I walked out of Bix wondering if I will ever bother to go back.

Dinner and live music - Superb!

By The Grazing Wanderer |

As soon as you walk in you know you're in for a treat. The venue has a classy, old school, elegant vibe and has an excellent selection of spirits at the bar. The live music was superb, a mix of piano and double bass. Service was on point. Our hostess, Layla, was very engaging, funny and helpful. During conversation I mentioned it was my birthday in 2 days time and she brought me my dessert with a candle in it to celebrate. A lovely touch! The cevice was fresh and citrusy, the lamd was perfectly cooked and the banana, apple & rum dessert was to die for. Overall a fantastic experience and would reccomend anyone to go. I'll certainly come back next time I'm in San Francisco.

Had a company dinner at Bix where the whole restaurant was booked up for 80pax. Service was great with constant offering of canapes and free flow of wine , champagne. Bix offers a 1920s great gatsby theme with jazz music from a live band . The food was as good as the atmosphere, with a set dinner with appetisers, mains and dessert. All in all , do try Bix when u have a big group or for a romantic dinner for 2, it will be biz at Bix!

Booked this for a birthday- Nice bar ambiance- food was well prepared- Nothing really to complain about- price was about right for the quality and atmosphere- Service was attentive- checked all the boxes- Booked on a Monday and surprisingly place was about 3/4 full- Solid upscale restaurant.

Great local gem

By dartmanbull |

This restaurant been in San Francisco since 1988 and it's a gem, been there a few times, however it's slightly going down hill. Upon arrival waiting for the valet to park the car,the first thing that came out of the hostess door was " you came through the back door" there is no sign saying it's the back door which is right next to the front door. The service is still impeccable the server Nicole was on the ball, however she had a very slow busboy. The only slight hiccup on the service was the expediter dropped the cheese platter on the table without explaining what they were, the toast for the cheese was burnt.

Amazing romantic place

By Atlisaev |

We just loved it. Before the food came we actually discussed that the atmosphere of this place was so good that we didn’t really care if the food was bad... it’s just so super nice and so romantic! Place 100% Service 100% Food 85% Overall amazing !

Just amazing!

We booked a table a month or 2 in advance as we were going to be in San Fran on holiday, I would advise this as it was definitely full when we arrived at 8pm, they were running a little behind on our table, we were a little early also, so waited at the bar and we ordered a drink. We were then collected to take to our table about 20 mins later, we weren't angry in the slightest and were just enjoying the atmosphere of the place and the pianist that was playing. They were so apologetic for making us wait but they definitely made up for it! Our server bent over backwards to make us feel welcome. We got a round of drinks, a third starter to share and our dessert on the house! They don't skimp on portion sizes, everything tastes so fresh and well made. All in all the food was outstanding, the service was excellent, worth every penny! Would definitely recommend.

1920 style but 2020 mentality

By 86swan |

Went here for my Birthday as it has Jazz music and write ups sounded fantastic. Restaurant is lovely, but in 1920's not so many people would have been crammed in, so very noisy and could not hear group playing which was a shame. The food was cooked well and nicely presented. Service was okay but my partner had plate taken while I was still eating so not as high class as you would expect for price paying

Romantic Restaurant

Friendly staff and good service. Food was average however and overpriced. Nice venue and atmosphere.

Classic jazz

By michEagan |

Wonderful find for a late night drink and music! Classic vibe with amazing cocktails and excellent service. Enjoyed a music trio after some piano music on a Saturday evening. Dinner seating up on the balcony looked like a great option, but we we entertained at the large bar with snacks and cocktails.

Ambiance, Drinks and Food Spot On

We had a group of over 20 and had a wonderful experience dining at Bix. The establishment has a nostalgic classy supper club feel. Bartenders were professional and made great mojitos. Food was excellent as well as menu selections. I will recommend Bix to all my friends and family.

Refined, elegant, very good meal

By C-Z-1982 |

Good restaurant in SFO. Classic (jeans ok but wear a jacket on top), great service. Menu is somewhat limited, but we liked that actually; the available choices were actually very good. Wine list not limited! We had halibut and pork chops, both good, pork chops generous and delicious. Wine were pricy and ok, not excellent for price we paid. Overall good experience, restaurant has been here for over 25 years.

Very Cool Vibe & Great Food - 4.5 Stars!

By Ann M |

When you approach down an alley and see the Bix sign you immediately get put into the mood for a very cool dinner. When you walk in and see the jazzy 1930's atmosphere it's definitely kid of fun. The Host and waitstaff were great and the food was out of this world. Our waiter gave us some great history of the building where miner's gold was valued during the rush as well as fun facts about the neighborhood. Really enjoyable. Part of my job is to take my directors to dinners during some of our conventions and I am always trying to find fun and different spots - they rated this one with high marks. They couldn't say enough about the food - it really was fantastic. Simple but perfection. I brought a group of business associates here for dinner. The only reason it dind't get 5 stars from me is because it is quite loud - but in a fun way. With a jazz band playing and the architecture of the building it does make it difficult to have a group conversation. I would say if you have 4-5 people or less it's perfectly fine to hear around a smaller table but more than that and you won't be able to hear everyone at your table. I highly recommend coming here and enjoying a jazzy and cool evening of fine dining!

Jazz + Food

A great place downtown for a wonderful food and music entertainment experience. Loved the American menu. Vegetarian menu is limited. Great ambiance and low noise level to enjoy live music. We will definitely come back.

Cant Miss

There is no place like Bix. It is both an old classic and a novel experience. From the room length double story bar, to the live jazz ensemble, to the classic old comfortable American fare cooked to perfection, Bix never disappoints. It is our go-to special occasion place as well as being our "just because" spot. Bix!

Fabulous

Fabulous food! We had several appetizers and the best pork chop I have ever had. The noise level is quite loud for someone with hearing aids.

Great Neighborhood Jazz Joint

By Davanrn |

We dined here for dinner. Housed on an alley in Jackson Square area. Great space. Live jazz every night. Nice menu. Good wine and drink mix.

Cool place and great atmosphere

By Cuso1960 |

The restaurant has a high ceiling that gives the room character. The food was well prepared and very tasty. We had 3 starters, a wonderful soup and a pasta with lobster that made my day. On top of that a nice dessert that made the evening a success. A great Zinfandel red wine accompanied us through the evening. Only minus was cold expresos served at the end of the meal.

Best dinner setting in SF

By peterteese |

Bix is my favorite restaurant in SF...it combines my most important elements into an amazing experience: ambiance, beautiful bar and incredible service. The food is great as you would expect, I'm biased toward the chicken hash and steak tartare but everything is great. The reason you go to Bix, though, is the jazz piano, the dark and anonymous booths upstairs and the scene at the bar. It's an old-fashioned high time, a throwback that leaves you feeling unrushed and at ease.

Wonderful Place to Celebrate Birthday!

By Markie1 |

Amazing food, amazing atmosphere! Quiet, romantic, very classy! Tucked away on hidden side street that has a lot of history from the Gold Rush Days!

Note ehat we expected

By RayO |

We made a reservation for 9pm, we got there on time and they made us wait for 40 min at the bar. After we sit at the table 20 min passed by until the toke order. After that appetizer cane but after that they take more than 1 hour to bring food. Check was not correct. The place is very nice, music very nice as well.

Couples dinner

By Jlk1000 |

Music was the highlight. Greeted by a not very friendly hostess. Server was very rushed. Had put on reservation it was my birthday and it was never acknowledged. Food was average. Would recommend for a drink at the bar but would not go back for dinner.

Great place, great service, great room, if only food was a bit better...

By Alexej69 |

Just to be clear: this place is 5/5 on every single count (ambiance, service, bar, the jazz band playing every night), but for food. I dined there a number of times in 2018 and 2019, and while I literally love the atmosphere (and will continue to go, because this is a unique setting!), the food has invariably beeh really poor. No fantasy in the menu (just mimicking some evergreen classics, but with poor results), no attention for healthy ingredients, poor execution. I wonder why they just not improve the quality of food: in the hands of an experienced chef, this place could become top in SF and would definitely be a blockbuster. Judging from the crowds that populate it every night, probably I am alone in finding disturbing the contrast between the quality of food (or the lack thereof) and the extraordinary quality of everything else. I will continue going, because I am really charmed by the "speakeasy" atmosphere of Bix, but what a pity!

Unique Dinner Experience

By Steve N |

It was like going into a time machine and traveling back to the roaring twenties. The artwork and decor were amazing and really created a fun and interesting environment. The staff were all dressed appropriately for the time period and the service was extraordinary making us feel special and appreciated.I seldom drink mixed drinks but their creative mixed drink menu was irresistible and I enjoyed a version of a 1920's rob roy.i couldn't resist the fried chicken hash as my main course. Not only was it unique but it was delicious. It waster anniversary and the restaurant was a perfect start to our evening.

Hidden gem with friendly staff and top quality food

By Mau |

A family member recommended this place and I absolutely loved it. The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful. The drinks were amazing. The food was top quality. I'd recommend getting the steak tartare to share and then all of the main dishes are amazing. The atmosphere is very unique, as you feel like you're having a meal back in time.

Great Dinner!!

By DaisyDot24 |

The restaurant was perfect! We went for an early dinner and the restaurant was pretty empty, but filled up as we were leaving. We were seated right away and the service was great! Our server was very friendly, prompt, and polite. The food was all great. The deviled eggs were some of the best I’ve had. My dad had the duck and it look tremendous. I had the chicken hash, it was unique and really flavorful. We will definitely be back soon!

Good food, but too noisy

By YMK01 |

We were a group of 8, placed at a round table. Due to the arkustic we were not able to communicate. We enjoined very much the food. I had a delicious fiken salad, lobster spaghetti and a dessert. All three courses were well tasting and all the suggested wine was good.

Wedding celebration

By cjays7 |

Bix is a very elegant place the service is outstanding full bar with excellent choices of various American quizeen. The food was good. All the appetizers were excellent for dinner My wife had filet mignon and I had the salmon ,salmon needed a little more seasoning but was moist and tender. I do re recommend box if you are in the City

Superlative, would have had 5 stars if not for the noise (on the customer side)

By Peter D |

This is a wonderful restaurant hidden down a little back street. The inside is like a tardis when compared to the outside and the decor is a delight to behold. The service was top notch. We had 5 in the party and everyone selected something different, and all dishes were prepared and presented perfectly. A good wine list and quality cocktails. The only downside is that it is very noisy (on the customer side), so much so that it was hard to hear the pianist and singer from 25-30 feast away. Even conversations at the table were hard. We would go again, but would now know what to expect and act accordingly.

Honeymoon special

By matth3w-williams |

We had a fantastic meal at Bix. The made our night extra special as we were celebrating our Honeymoon! The crab starter is to die for, followed by the fillet mignon was superb. Plus they serve our favourite champagne (bollinger). It is a must for all who enjoy foot food and Jazz!

Wonderful fun evening and setting

By SpringChickenNot |

our evening at Bix was terrific-the setting is beautiful, supper club feeling with great music. I liked being upstairs where you can view music and bar but still be able to visit. ( it can be a little hard at times to hear each other). The mural behind the bar is wonderful as is the other art around.the least interesting item was the crab cakes-everything else was yummy , beautifully served with generous portions. The lamb was tender and wonderfully seasoned, as was the pork chop. The grande beans with broccoli I was delicious and well seasoned and our friends loved the lobster spaghetti. We were celebrating birthdays and received an incredible chocolate with cream dessert that was amazing. Our waiter was lovely and all the service was just right. We'd been quite a long time ago and Bix continues to be a great place to return to.

Superb

Hidden nice restaurant

By hona_tokyo |

This restaurant was recommended by the concierge after not getting a reservation in the restaurant we originally wanted to go. We were not disappointed at all. Great atmosphere, knowledgeable waitering, very delicious food and a valet parking. There was live music but don't count on it a lot.

Outstanding Food | Practice Your Sign Language

By Lisa R |

Bix is located on Gold, an alley situated in what used to be Yerba Buena Cove. It is rumored that much of this area rests on landfill, supported by over 50 abandoned ship hulls. During the Gold Rush, thousands took the trip around Cape Horn for their chance at striking a claim. Once they reached the Golden Gate, were any of these ships going to have sailors wiling to staff a ship to sail back? Of course not. The ships sat there in Yerba Buena Cove, awaiting their second purpose. And so we have one of the most historical parts of San Francisco. Bix honors its past. The food at Bix is outstanding, highlighting the best in our region, including Dungeness crab apps and warm sourdough dinner rolls. You may balk at a $30 cheeseburger until you taste it with truffle fries and realize that every component is so thought out it is worth the money. The chicken hash looks more like a cutlet, but is moist and flavorful just the same. Food alone easily gets five stars. Bix is very dark so one would think that this fact combined with the outstanding food and historical vibe would amount to the perfect place to share a special meal with a special someone(s), The problem is that you won't be able to hear your special someone(s), So yes, go ahead and make that marriage proposal, clasp those two hands together, because you will need to make the proposal in American Sign Language. For everyday diners, just concentrate on the fabulous food and save conversation for another time.

Sublime Experience

By TrindaM |

What a truly incredible experience. The food, service and ambiance was outstanding. The Jazz Duo was a fabulous accompaniment to a sublime venue. Thank you for our special seating and consideration for our Wedding Anniversary celebration. Bix made our experience all the more special.

Magnifique!

By Brenda R |

Bix was a superb place to eat. Expensive, yes! if you want a one night out and will be sure to have delicious food, exception service and nice ambience this is THE place. I had seabass and shrimp in boulibase sauce and it was delicious. Just enough...not scant, not over the top too much either.

Simply Amazing!

This is the Gold Standard of what a restaurant experience should be. Excellent service, great food, wonderful drinks and oh! the Gorgeous Room. There is no better dining experience in SF.

Live music , great food!

By TravelinHeels |

Great spot in FiDi with love jazz music which starts around 8:30. It's great to make the reservation right around that time so you can enjoy the amazing food, ambiance and music! Service: always a 5 star Food: potato pillows with caviar ( a tad oily but yum) 4 stars Ceviche: 5 stars. not your traditional kind that you will see everywhere but as tasty. ( picture is attached) Tomato salad: 5 stars. Very tasty. Gig salad:3 stars. it was very light but not our favorite We didn't order any entree but as for dessert we had their signature dessert. It's a banana ice cream with chunks of banana in a compote. It tastes more like a creme brûlée but 10 times better. Served warm. Neither of us were a huge banana fan but don't leave this place without ordering this dessert! One word a-mazing!
