French Delight

By Martin Y |

This terrific restaurant is in my neighborhood and I frequent the place. It has hearty french food with a broad variety of menu items. It's interior decor is a mixture of rustic elegance. Candles burning everywhere, comfortable seating and not too difficult to get into, however I do recommend reservations. It's right at the gateway to Kennsington.

A Very Happy Thanksgiving.

Wonderful food, excellent service. Our waitress Socoro was perfect. And I am not easy to please. Very romantique ambiance .

We had an excellent evening.

We had an excellent evening. The food was wonderful. The drinks and win were delicious. Post dinner chocolate martini was amazing and Jamie was a suburb server! Thank you, Bleu! We’ll be back!

A little Bit of the French Countryside

By imub4ur |

Upon walking in, you will be taken by the French decor, it truly is unique. I don't know if it is accurate, but it felt like it to me. We started with Tarte Chaude au "Reblochon" an appetizer I would recommend. My wife had the duck, which she loved and I had Coquilles St. Jacques. Not being a fan of mussels I was reluctant, but the waitress assured me that there were only a couple. In fact there were four, but they weren't bad eating and I liked the dish. For dessert we shared a mango bread pudding that was fabulous. Iced tea was Earl Grey and super weak.

Do yourself a favor and eat here now!

By Holly F |

Fellow travelers: do yourself a favor and eat here now! This is definitely a new favorite! We visited here a yearish ago for brunch and loved it. We had always talked about going back, but just hadn't made it happen... until this week. Monday was my birthday and my man knew I would be super excited to try Bleu Boheme for dinner. We were not disappointed! It is such a cute and romantic place. Service was on point. Jorge was attentive, kind, and gave us great recommendations. The food was delicious! Jorge brought us a fresh loaf of bread and butter. We had the gnocchi, mussels, and pork. Dessert was a flight of deliciousness - mousse, ice cream, and cream puff. Yum yum yum! We will be back!

Oh la la: Amazing French feast in a romantic setting

By Kate M |

Hands down the best dinner (start to finish) I've had in at least six months, if not more. Highly recommend Bleu Boheme for special occasions, or just for dessert and drinks, either will be worth your while. To start, we each had a specialty martini off of the cocktail list (Basil and French martini) and the cheese plate. Both martinis had just the right amount of booze and mixers. The cheese plate had a very unique variety of cheeses, some of which I'd never had (which is a rarity, given that I'm from the Dairy State), but the fresh honey comb and fig were the absolute perfect compliment to any of the cheeses. For our entrees we shared the Boeuf Bourguignon and the Fletan Oscar. I've been to countless French restaurants (here and in France), and Bleu Boheme's Bourguignon was probably the best I've ever had. Likewise, the Oscar (halibut) was so delectably prepared it tasted almost like lobster. Just to die for. While we probably did not have adequate "room for dessert," we ordered the Gateau au Chocolat (flour-less chocolate cake) and the Glace au Chocolat Blanc (white chocolate ice cream with a fresh berry and strawberry confiture) anyways. Wow, just WOW. While either of the desserts was amazing on its own, when you combine them it is what I like to call a mouth orgasm. If only there was a Bleu Boheme in DC my life would be complete . . . (my waistline, though, tends to disagree).

Terrible experience

By azmim |

I read all the reviews on Trip Advisor. We were so excitted to go and try out the Happy hour menu. When we finally got in, we were informed that the happy hour menu was different this week because it was Restaurant week. The bar is in a separate room from the restaurant. They had about 7 items on the list ... all marked up to $10.00. Only a few items from the regular happy hour, calamari and one type of mussels. A salad for $10.00 (no meat, just salad) plus other SIMPLE items. What a disappointment and waste of our time. We traveled about 35 miles to get there, it is difficult to find parking and they won't let you in a minute before 5pm, not even for a drink. If you want good French food, go to the French Market Place or Bernard'Os. Their food is excellent, the staff are very professional and they are happy for your business.

Excellent Meal Kensington

By GaryDawsonDesigns |

My Confit de Canard came with two legs instead of one leg and one breast but that was a bonus for me as I prefer darker poultry anyway. Also a very nice polenta cake with goat cheese and black kale with mustard sauce. We opened the meal with a Delas St. Esprit Cotes de Rhone rosé that was just perfect. My friend enjoyed Raviolis Maison and when he generously invited me to try one I was extremely impressed. Interestingly the pasta was transparent as though it were a cellophane noodle type pasta, intriguing and really tasty in that the pasta did not overwhelm the stuffing...rare with many raviolis. I wish there were a 4.5 star rating, this possibly could have been a 5 star meal but I'm pretty reserved in giving that 5th star as my rating system develops. I will definitely go back to Bleu Boheme!

Yummo

By lbalon |

We have been there more than once and have always enjoyed it, but this was the first time we went for Brunch. I had the Duck Confit hash with eggs in a red wine sauce and my husband had the traditional Eggs Benedict. The amount of food was more than enough. When it came out both my husband and I didn't think that I'd be able to finish....but it was so good I ate it all!

Nice, local place

By ItalophileTrav |

My husband and I dined here with friends (locals to San Diego scene). They picked this restaurant, and we had a wonderful time. Hint: Parking is difficult, so make certain to arrive early for your reservation. Ambience: Really lovely. Intimate setting with low light and close seating. We were worried about that at first, but it ended up being just fine. Decor is eclectic, but put together well. Staff: Friendly and helpful. Not pretentious as with many french restaurants. Bar: Good drinks and bar fare. We arrived in time for happy hour on a Friday night and were pleasantly surprised. The choices were limited, but worth a try. Food: Excellent for the most part. 3 of the 4 of us raved about our entrees. One friend thought theirs was average. I had the beef bourguignon and thought it was very good. Return trip? Possibly.

the chef never ever tasted onion soup...!!!!

By Claude7592 |

I went last night for the happy hour and I never had that kind of experience.... the Charcuterie you could see the sunset thru each piece of it and just 10 pieces on the plate that give you 1 dollar a piece....!!!! the onion soup was not on the happy hour list but for 13 dollars a tiny bol of broth not tasting at all onions but something else, the chef might never ever taste a really one... the onion tart was tiny but ok, and the service was very nice and good...

Romantic French Bistro

By SDTraveler515 |

A romantic neighborhood French Bistro. sit in the bar or the large room to the left of the bar. Great comfortable window seats. A candle lit restaurant, I love the candelabras on the bar--unique. the food is good, I love the French Onion Soup and the Salad, delicious French Fries, Steak is tough, Mussels are wonderful. The ambiance is perfect. Parking is difficult.

Great Find With Bohemian Feel

By nadiwo |

Went to Bleu Boheme to celebrate a birthday and we were pleasantly surprised with the atmosphere and food. I ordered the mussels aux moutarde (which they are known for) and they were absolutely delicious! service was good, ambiance was wonderful with candelabrs covered in melted wax burning on all the tables. The only criticism I havevis that it was very loud and a bit difficult to carry on a conversation, aside from that we all had a fabulous experience.

Happy Hour at Bleu Boheme Kensington

By dcmalo |

Find yourself enjoying delicious appetizers at reasonable prices! I particularly enjoyed the duck pate plate...AND the happy hour martinis at half price - or full price are very tasty. Do try the Basil Martini! The croquettes are yummy too! A not to be missed restaurant in charming Kensington.

Delightful Sunday Luncheon

By Sharlene T |

My mother had been reading Julia Child's biography, "My Life in France", and expressed a desire for French food. We hadn't been to Bleu Boheme in quite some time, so off we went. What a delightful visit. We sat outdoors on a sunny January day, and immediately ordered Mimosas - of which they have an extensive selection at a fabulous Sunday brunch price ($4). We tried the pomegranate mimosa, and it was wonderful, in fact at that price we ordered refills! I ordered a traditional french sandwich on a baguette, served on a board with pommes frites and salad...it was fabulous. Mom ordered boeuf bourguignon and loved it. Great way to spend Sunday afternoon in San Diego!

Very pricey for what you get.

By Jason V |

It seems prices have gone up since a few months ago. They charge premier prices for good food. I've had the escargot many times, but now it seems as though they only have escargot gratin, which is disappointing. The service is always very good. Go for happy hour.

One of the best French restaurants in San Diego

By Eddie Travels |

QUICKIE REVIEW Yes, it is a must try. I have to say it is the best French restaurant that I have had in San Diego at this time. Perfect for a dinner date with an actual candlelit (not battery operated!) dinner. If budget is tight, come during restaurant week. FOOD Here is what I tried: -Croquette de crabe (appetizer) - description is in the name -Steak tartare (appetizer) - smoked New York steak -Boeuf Bourguignon (entrée)- angus beef cheeks -Confit de Canard (entrée)- duck leg -Gateau aux Trois Fromages (dessert) - goat crème cheese cake -Mousse au Chocolat (dessert) - chocolate mousse If you are a seafood lover, definitely start your meal off with croquette de crabe. Simple yet delicious. Conversely, the texture of steak tartare was not for me. I am sure many people love it and will rant & rave about it. Just was not my taste. Boeuf bourguignon, I have never had angus beef like that before. When I stuck my fork into the meat, it went through it like a hot knife through butter. I mean it was just falling apart from being cooked so well. Soft and savory are the words that come to mind when I think of this dish. This is a must try. Confit de canard, duck to another level. The skin had a nice, sweet, crispy, caramelized flavor to it. On the inside the meat was juicy and tender. The lentils that came with it perfectly complimented the taste. I almost ordered one more just because I did not want it to be over because it tasted so good. This is a must try. For both desserts I will say they are both really hit or miss. If you are feeling adventurous, try the goat crème cheesecake--something different. PARKING Parking is a bit non-existent as this restaurant sits on the corner of a street. However, you do have a few options. Directly behind Blue is the Chase bank parking lot. Not so much in the day time but if the bank is closed, it is fair game. Three businesses over you will find Ponce's. You have their parking lot along with the neighborhood it connects to. SERVICE Service was good. Our waiter checked on us frequent but not enough to be annoying. PRICE You are paying a bit of a premium here but it is well worth it. You should expect to pay around $100 for two. TIP Menu changes weekly here so check their website to see if what they are offering that week is for you. Definitely worth a date night. The ambience screams romantic. Not too many places will give you a real candlelit dinner. A welcomed bit of nostalgia keeping things simple. Go to their bathroom. Not so much for the bathroom experience but they have all their awards and accolades posted right before you go, which is pretty cool to see.

Great French Restaurant

By Jon_Hbg |

We enjoyed the 3 course meal 5-6 pm discount. $30 per person for appetizer or salad, Main dish, and desert. We loved the Beef bourguignon also know as beef Burgundy. The escargot and chocolate mouse were delicious!

Favorite spot in our new neighborhood

By Lucky1Sarasota |

We recently moved to San Diego and have fallen in love with this place. Whether eating outside, or dining at the bar, we have loved eating and drinking here. Happy hour specials from 5-6 can't be beat. Unless GiGi hasn't made you a martini, you haven't lived. Love, love, love this place, it's staff, and patrons.

Great as ever

By David B |

We've dined here a few times in the past, then not for about 2 years, and had dinner at Bleu Boheme this weekend. It was as good as ever in all respects. Our friends had the escargot and shrimp dish, and a mussels dish. Both excellent. Mussels are one of their specialities, and they did not disappoint. My wife had Coquille St. Jacques and I had a delicious pork chop. Our dining experience made us eager to return soon. There's a bonus: the funky, homey and wonderful little Ken Cinema, which shows art films, is across the street. So it's a wonderful way to spend anafternoon and evening, seeing a great and interesting film and having a great dinner.

Anniversaire Superbe

By KatrinkaSD |

Like going to France without the jet lag! Not only wonderful food In a charming environment, but excellent, attentive, even loving service to new customers on the occasion of their anniversary. Always wanted to go there. Never should have waited. Every morsel was an experience and cooked to perfection. As absurd as it sounds, even the after dinner decafe coffee was divine! I would try anything on the menu, just follow your heart’s desire. This restaurant is a community treasure.

Good food, nice atmosphere, rather expensive

By pbridge1300 |

They have succeeded with their ambience -- comfortable bar, charming interior. Good, solid menu, Frenchy feel. First courses start at $12 and go to $20; soups and salads start at $12 and go to $22 (salade chevre with duck confit); mains start at $24 and go to $30. They have a lot of spectacular competition at that altitude, and the prices feel disproportionate to me, so we go here infrequently. Steak frites, $30??? The Farm House is every bit as good, much better priced, and not corporate. Your mileage and credit limit may vary.

Stellar setting, service, menu selections, preparations, and wine

By CaFoodRepublic |

A wonderful neighborhood restaurant in an older part of this venerable town. Though traffic is a bit on the heavy side out front, early evening seating outside is worth considering, with sweaters and area heaters on demand. Service was smart, punctual seating, leisurely ordering and course pacing. wonderful appetizers, great French wines (we did a Marc Bredif Chinon). Mostly appetizers and small plates, which are always on sale before 6 p.m., but quite generous in their size. Exceptionally great flavors in the pate, escargots, salads, Gnocchis, calamari, raviolis, and onion soup--its hard to see how you could order anything that would not be exceptional. Deserts of creamy Creme Brûlée and the chocolate mousse with another half liter of house red finished the meal off splendidly. Exceptional house staff. Interior of the restaurant is roomy, inviting, old world charm, and quiet as well. Will return again and again.

Awesome French Restaurant

Great food with wonderful smiling service. Their prix fixe menu gives you a great way to try the food at a decent price. Parking can be difficult to find. I'd recommend making a reservation.

By agbells |

friends told me that i should check out Bleu Boheme for french food and that they have really good mussels. I came here for their happy hour last week and I thought all their mussels were happy hour price, instead only the mussels with garlic and cream broth was the only one in the happy hour menu. From the happy hour menu we ordered that mussels, croquette, escargot, and a rum smoked salmon carpaccio. I really wanted to try the mussels in saffron broth, so I ordered that anyway from their regular menu. The croquette was really good, inside the potatoes it has little bits of smoked hams; the croquette was super crispy on the outside and it was not oily. An order comes with two croquettes and they are drizzled in bearnaise sauce. the carpaccio had really nice cuts of rum smoked salmon (generous portion too) and on top of the salmon it had shaved fennels, baby arugula salad with capers and lemon zest tossed in this champagne vinaigrette -- it was really refreshing! the escargot was just okay. I've had better and this one did not come in shells; it was already de-shelled escargot; drenched in this garlic and herb butter. the mussels with roasted garlic cream and white wine sauce was tasty. each mussels were plump; however the taste of this broth was not as strong as the saffron. The saffron one was just so fragrant and flavorful. I wish the saffron broth was in the happy hour menu. Actually i wish they put all the mussels back in the happy hour menu so i can taste everything! Happy hour is definitely a good deal; and you can totally get full from it. Can't wait to visit Bleu Boheme again and try other items from the menu.

Birthday dinner for my husband

By joandodge |

My husband loves French food and although we live 30 miles from this restaurant, I had heard such good things about it I decided to drive him there for his birthday dinner. We had a 7:15 reservation and were immediately seated at a nice table for two. Our server, Faith, took our champagne cocktail order almost immediately. They were delicious. We ordered the Charcuterie Board for an appeitzer. It had a lovely selection of cured meats, pickled vegetables, mustard, honey and a divine pate! Faith came by to ask us which item we liked best - the pate, of course. We ordered a bottle of Pommard, a wine Faith was not familiar with. She went in the back and asked the chef and other servers if they knew much about it. She came back with glowing reviews - so Pommard it was. We asked her if she liked to bring a glass of her own and we would give her a sample, which she did gladly. Husband had the rack of lamp with a Salade Maison. I had a salad with goat cheese the the Moules et Frites. I love mussels and these were splendid done in a light mustard sauce. You have the option of several different sauce preparations for the mussels. Husband thought the lamb was perfect as well. The chef came out to greet us and thank us for coming as did the manager. They made us feel so very special and it was our first visit. Imagine how they treat the regulars!! Faith brought birthday boy a dessert of gingerbread with berries and carmel ice cream. He was in heaven noting that the French know how to do dessert - never too sweet. It was a wonderful evening and we vowed to return again, if only to have the great mussels!

Good restaurant.

I tested several times this restaurant, I always liked, It is one of the restaurant or I pass at the time of my voyages to San Diego. The service is good, I like to eat with the bar.

Great ambience! Nice date spot

By Jared |

My girlfriend and I came here on a Saturday night to spend our Valentines Dinner and were both satisfied with the restaurant. I had reservations for 7:15pm and we were seated as soon as we came into the restaurant which was even 5 minutes early. She had the Salade de Chèvre Chaud and she said it was really good. It comes with a whole cooked chicken thigh on the side. I had the Steak Frites and it was impressively tasty. I asked for it to be cooked medium rare and it couldn’t have been any better! We both had 1/4 bottles of wine which they have a pretty good wine menu to choose from. This spot is a really nice place to take your significant other and it is not that expensive but moderately priced. Our serve Jorge was awesome and met our expectations!

Best Mussells in Town

By Ann M |

I'm very partial to this place, as it is right around the corner and so convenient. Chef/Owner Ken Irvine knows his French comfort food and covers all the traditional dishes you would expect from a French restaurant - coq au vin, Beef Bourguignon, escargots, and the best onion soup. The Confit de Canard never disappoints, and the Tartare de Saumon Fume is beyond delicious. Literally any fish dish is a winner, as they source the freshest ingredients. The neighborhood favorite has to be the mussels and French fries. You have a choice of broth, all of which can be soaked up with the crusty warm bread provided. The "pommes frites" are cooked in duck fat with lavender - soooo tasty! The best value is during nightly Happy Hour, when drinks are half off, and the mussels and French fries can be had for $10.95 instead of the usual $24.95. The serving size is somewhat smaller, but I still can't finish it all. The service is awesome and the wait staff very knowledgeable. It helps that they have a low staff turnover. Try the basil martini!

Just a pleasant evening with my special someone

By NewportAndrew80 |

This restaurant is what it is. Casual, authentic, and unpretentious. A job well done by all. Service and cuisine- both outstanding, simple with grace. The ambiance is quite breathtaking. Share with someone special. Enjoy!

Excellent food, poor service

By southerncal10 |

Third time we've been here. The food has always been excellent, fairly priced. However, the service was very disappointing-we waited 25 minutes between first and second course despite speaking to the waiter and maitre de. Also, very noisy, hardly able to carry on a conversation.

Perfect honeymoon dinner

By sunlovers91730 |

Had our post wedding dinner at the Blue Boheme and so happy we did! Our waiter Ken was awesome. The food was outstanding. Reservations were spot on and we even got a phone call the night before asking if we had any seating preferences. The entire staff was superb. My husband stated his scallops was the best meal he has ever had...it was that good! Highly recommend for any occasion, so much fun!

Cozy French restaurant

By Deborah B |

My husband and I were looking for a quite, upscale restaurant for date night after work. The Bleu Boheme was just right. Located in a walking neighborhood with nice ambiance. Once inside, you feel like you are in another world. Cozy, refined like walking off a street in Paris. The service was excellent. I had Branzino cooked just right. My husband had Coquille St. Jacques- quite different from the traditional and too salty, but a nice dish. A la carte entrees. We happened to be there on a night when select wine was buy one (for dinner) and get one for 10 cents(to take home). We went for the deal and enjoyed the wine very much. The dessert menu was tempting but we opted to go across the street to Moosie's for ice cream!

Stopped in for a delicious Martini!

By Vet3X |

Great French resturant, with a bar! We walked by and decided t walk in, had just finished lunch at another place but sat by the bar and enjoyed a delicious martini!

French delight

By MarcelaMinvielle |

This French restaurant is delicious. Everything we had was amazing. During the evening we selected the menu and for a fixed price we got an entry, a main course (AMAZING moules) and a dessert. I will definitely come back again. The service was super friendly, the place is beautiful and the food delicious.

Always great food. Excellent mussels!

By Cielaklvr |

We are so grateful to live within walking distance to Bleu Boheme in the San Diego neigboorhood of Kensington. This restaurant never disappoints and consistently serves up some of the best French comfort food. The eight different varieties of mussels are out of this world and are a must have as an appetizer or entree for ever visit. All the French favorites can be found here along with delicious, creative daily specials. The bar offers an impressive wine list and daily happy hour. Reservations suggested, especially on weekends. Outdoor patio seating is also available. The staff is very attentive and friendly. Popular with locals, Bleu Bohem is a definite winner! Check out their website for menu and reservations.

Wonderful French Restaurant in San Diego

By DonaldBouchard |

My wife and I heard that this neighborhood French restaurant was very good and we were waiting to go for a special occasion. We went on a Wednesday night and had a fantastic meal with attentive, friendly wait staff and excellent food. My wife had the onion soup and the Filet Mignon de Jumeaux and I had the Tarte Chaud and the Flétan Oscar. I also recommend the Bleu Martini. We actually had an error with what we ordered and the manager remedied the situation above and beyond what we expected.

We love this wonderful restaurant located in Kensington San Diego:)

By Dave T |

My wife and I actually had our first date here! (5 years ago) We had an experience here that we now recreate weekly. The staff are just delightful and knowledgeable about Chef Irvine's latest creations.... btw he insists that we just call him 'Ken.' So humble and sweet:) Insider tip: Happy Hour with amazing mussels and superb Martini style specialty drink is 5pm-6pm daily. Get there early or go on the weekdays like my wife and I do.

The service is great. Food was okay.

By Michael M |

I’m saddened to be leaving a 3 star review for this restaurant as I recall having had two good experiences with the dinner and happy hour bar drinks, when I first moved to San Diego (about 13 years ago). I brought my partner here for a birthday dinner. We sort of ended up here last minute as he couldn’t decide on which restaurant he wanted to eat at until we remember Bleu Boheme, and the positive experiences we had here. We were lucky enough to score a spot in their customer parking, around the corner. Without reservations, there were no available tables inside, however, we were able to get a table outside next to a heat lamp. Our waitress was amazing - super friendly, personable, and just wonderful. Service was superb. The busser was on top of everything. We had asked for the heat lamp to be turned higher as it was pretty chilly out, but we’re told that the heat lamp was on high, however it wasn’t putting out higher flames like the other ones. The busser and I just assumed that the heat lamp was kind of broken. The reason for my three star review is mainly the food. We ordered the La Charcuterie, which came with a nice selection of 5 meats, a house made duck pate, and a pork terrine. We also ordered the Escargots de la veiled Ecole, as escargot is a regular appetizer we enjoy eating out or make at home. Unfortunately the escargot here was not like any I’ve had - at any other French restaurant in this city or in Paris. The escargot were over cooked and was served in a bath of creamy oily broth. It was not very tasty nor appealing. For our mains, we ordered the Entrecôte de Porc (a bone-in pork chop) and the Steak Frites. Bone-In pork chops are one of my favorites, but this one was different. The texture and taste was like eating ham. It was the oddest thing ever. I’ve always had my bone-in pork chops cooked medium, where it’s juicy and tender throughout - never like ham. My partner’s skirt steak was okay, but the caramelized onion was a bit on the saucy soft side and didn’t quite enhance the steak much. For desert, we order the Profiteroles, which was nice. Our server was so awesome, she was able to lip read me telling her secretly that it was my partner’s birthday and surprised him with a chocolate birthday dessert - candle and all. As I had prefaced this review: Service is wonderful here. Wish the food we had was closer to the level of service from hostess to table.

Not up to the hype

By CoronadoCarol |

We had heard rave reviews from friends about the mussels at Bleu Boheme. Well, they were a disappointment. We had two different preparations, both of which were OK. BUT--one portion had 9 mussels, the other had 8. That's in the I don't think so department. The bread was good and fresh (I would have preferred a baguette over brown bread). The fries--well, to me they smelled like soap. To my companion they smelled like lavender. Turns out they are made with herbes de provence, including lavender. I like herbes de provence when lavender is not included--but I definitely do not want my french fries to smell and taste like lavender. The service was excellent. The place is somewhat dark and dingy. The bleu martini was fine.

C'est bon

Hadn't tried BB in awhile. Went with another couple on a Saturday night - early (7p). We arrived early, and were pleasantly seated right away in the "main" room. I brought a bottle of wine; Sarah asked about cocktails, and if she could open the bottle so it could breathe. We said yes, thanks, to both. We had a sparkling rosè suggested by Sarah - dry and bubbly; just right. Salads were fresh, delicious, and just the right amount of dressing. BB has about six variations of fantastic mussels; my wife chose the cream with white wine - huge, moist, tasty, and plentiful. Two of us had ravioli 'maison' (several mushroom varieties in a very fresh ravioli in a cream sauce - yummy! Sarah (and a redheaded waitress whose name we never got) did an outstanding job of keeping us happy. Try this French bistro in Kensington - you won't be disappointed..

Overpriced and poorly Served

By gary7272 |

Went there last Saturday night with my significant other. Was immediately struck by the high prices($6.50 for bread, $15+ for a cup of onion gratinee soup). However, that is not the issue. My partner ordered a salad and specifically requested no Roquefort cheese. Of course it came with the cheese. I slowly ate my soup while we waited for the correct order. We both ordered the salmon. Mine was lukewarm, but I started eating it anyways. When I got to the center portion it was raw. I had to send it back to be cooked. The waitress, who was quite nice, said it was because the filled was larger than previously cooked salmon fillets. At previous restaurants, especially ones that cost over$50pp(without wine). An apology for the 2 screwup would facilitate an offer of a complimentary desert or some type of compensation. Here a manager came over and thanked us for letting him know about the issues. Shortly thereafter the waitress brought over a desert menu to give is the opportunity to spend more time and money. No thank you.

Wonderful French Bistro

By Monica H |

We had such a nice time the first time we went, we had to go back! The food is excellent, the atmosphere takes you back to the streets of Paris. I highly recommend you try Bleu Boheme!

Wonderful ambiance and fantastic food!

By steveprez |

This is a nice French restaurant in the Kensington neighborhood. Inside is a warm, casual, atmosphere with a nice ambiance. More bistro than fine dining. The wine list is extensive with a decent number of wines sold as 1/4 or 1/2 bottles. The food was fantastic across the board. Perhaps the best rack of lamb I've ever had. Highly recommended.

Like a French bistro

By Burnie D |

We have moved to San Diego and found this French Bistro near our new home. They have happy hour in the bar area from 5 to 6 and the bar has small tables and is perfect for 2 people.A house martini that is really good is the Basil Martini. I had the Pate plate and it is good but not great. We shared the Calamari and it was really good. My wife enjoyed her onion tarte. Our server Angela was a delight. This is a fun place.

not worth the money

By Josefina G |

Read a lot of reviews on this restaurant. Expensive , not worth the money, The gingerbread with ice cream was so so. The salmon was overdone ,lots of creamy sauce. We prefer Vincent's on Grand or Bellamy's. The decor is charming......absolutely french!!!

Loud & Loud

By ctschiltsch |

Our party of 10 had reservations for New Year's Eve at the Bleu Boheme. The restaurant did a nice job of creating a seating in a square formation as we had requested. The intent of having this kind of seating arrangement was that it would allow us to talk with all members of our party whereas seating us all in a row would not facilitate that kind of conversation. I give them credit for that, but here is the problem. It is so noisy in the restaurant and the acoustics are so bad that we actually had to yell just to speak to the person seating next to us. This fact alone made the whole evening of dining out with friends a bust! At one point in the evening they even began playing background music, this only added to the din and even the staff realized this and turned in off. The food was fine (limited New Year's Menu) , somewhat overpriced for what you got and decidedly not worth a repeat visit with that noise level. The service was very good and I don't blame the wait staff for the lack of ambiance. This restaurant needs to decide if it wants to be an upscale French restaurant with food and prices to match or a noisy bar/hook up place with food and prices to match. We were very, very disappointed.

Wonderful neighborhood restaurant

By cabotip |

We were a large group celebrating a friend's b-day. The ambiance and décor is very country French, on the rustic side. Loved the French music, specially Charles Aznavour. I recommend the scallops(superb) and the gnocchi with vegetables(delicious). The crab cakes and charticurie plate you can pass. Filet mignon tournedoes and halibut Oscar, highly recommend it, but could do with a bit less of the mornay sauce. Crème brulee and profiterole highly recommend. Prices are reasonable not over the top and they have a nice wine selection, but not too extensive. There is plenty of parking in the neighborhood, you just have to walk a bit, which will help you burn what you ate and also browse around Kensington area. Bon apetit!!!

consistently good

By laficabella |

I have not eaten everything on the menu , but what I have had is good value for the money and always tasty. they now have Foie gras back on the menu, just to inform those of you that long for it, and also those who are boycotting places with Foie Gras. The portions are just right, and recently, I had two starters, gnocchi with duck and bacon which was scrumptious and a salad with faro and other goodies. My friends had Moules, which they loved, and these are a specialty and come in two sizes (1 and 2 lb) in a variety of sauces, with frites or with salad. The sour dough bread is to die for as well. Their wine list is excellent, and for those of you who like Paso Robles wine, you will find a good selection of those wines. They have a happy hour at the bar, and people line up for it, so I assume the bar scene is nice. The noise level is very acceptable, so that you can have a conversation. I hear the brunches are excellent as well, although I have not been there for brunh.

Wonderful service and food

By Nancy D |

The menu variety was excellent - a choice of small plates and full meals. I had the lobster crepe - would make a great appetizer to share, but perfect for a meal as well. Hostess and wait staff were attentive and kept drinks and bread basket full for the duration of our meal.

Solidly good

By David B |

Our usual routine is to see a film at The Ken (an cinema that shows indie and art films), then have dinner in the neighborhood. The ambiance, service, menu are all excellent. It isn't cheap, but this is fine dining and worth it. For some reason, my entrée (pork loin) and the Fries, were overly salted. If I were to have noted this, I'm sure they would have addressed the problem in a satisfactory manner. So, a suggestion might be to tell the waitress or waiter to be sure that the chef goes light on the salt.

Dissaponting anniversary lunch

By Forkandcase |

Came in to celebrate our anniversary - this was our second visit here after a really good lunch 4 months ago...something must have happened since- The good: fantastic bread and butter (which we had to ask for since they forgot ), the mimosa pitcher was good too. The bad: we ordered moules, the steak sandwich a salad and the crab eggs Benedict. The crab cakes for the eggs were overly salted and it made it almost inedible, the steak for the sandwich was so overcooked my 9 year old said he was eating rubber not meat...the meat also had a strange smell (gone bad?) my moules were ok but extremely garlicky and oniony...We couldn't wait to get out...We ll re do our anniversary lunch somewhere else.

BEST FRENCH FOOD IN SAN DIEGO

By Cary L |

Bleu Boheme is our "go to" restaurant for French bistro cuisine. They do a consistently excellent preparation of all the classics, from onion soup to beef bourguignon to steak frites to various mussels dishes. Also a nice and reasonably priced wine list, as well as excellent cocktails. The staff are friendly and attentive, and the dining room is comfortable (if just a bit loud). Ask for a table in the main dining room, rather than in the front room by the bar. Ample street parking is available. Note: The restaurant is easily wheelchair-accessible, and there are handicapped parking spaces in front and in a public lot across the street.

Delightful Mussels

By melobeam |

The skinny: Parking- street, after hrs bank behind building Decor- simple, love the candles Restroom- clean single Coke factor- perfectly carbonated, in a glass Service- very friendly Food- great My mom and I came here for dinner one night and what great ambience this place has!! It's on a street with several other terrific looking places if only we had had the time to explore! After you order, they bring you a large loaf of bread that is steaming hot and comes with creamy butter but don't fill up! The plates are generous and the food is so good. I had the mussels which came with frites (fries) and I used the bread to sop up the white wine and garlic broth that cooked the delicious mussels. My mom ordered the ribeye which was huge and we had to take most of it home. That also came with fries and a lovely salad. I would totally come back here next time I'm in San Diego.

Will be back !!

By Travelbug60750 |

Accidentally ran across this restaurant when we were going to the movie theatre opposite; what a fortunate discovery! Loved everything about this place...the ambience, the outstanding service and wonderful food. I had the special for that evening: seared scallops on a bed of couscous with diced vegetables...full of flavour and positively delicious. My dining companion ordered only a starter (the crab cakes) which was practically a main course in itself, and, equally delicious. Have already recommended this restaurant to everyone I know...

French Does Right

Love this place. The ambiance is perfect for a quite meal for two or a small gathering. The (French) onion soup is just superb. There's usually an interesting special too. Any time we are in this area, we try to have dinner here.

Really enjoyed the Steak Tartar and Steak fries, tender and delicious. The fries Were fried in duck fat and had parm cheese sprinkled on top yum.

As good as the first time!

By Mike M |

Our kids had taken us here before and on a return trip my wife and I decided to go again. Are we glad we did! Just as good as the first time! Which is to say outstanding. Food is great, ambiance is great, wait staff is very friendly. You will enjoy Bleu Boheme. We skipped appetizers and had mussels instead. They were exquisite. My wife had the lamb ravioli and I had the haddock. We finished with sharing a Nutella crepe. Go and start your own memories at this quaint little restaurant.

Birthday Party

By Nita199 |

We had a dinner party here last night and it was AMAZING! The service, the food - everything was excellent. Everyone in our party of 11 said their food was excellent. I ordered the Beef Bourguignon and it was delicious, delectable and meltingly tender. I highly recommend this restaurant!

Nice dinner

By Worldwatcher |

This is a very nice restaurant that really does its best to bring a little piece of Fance to San Diego. The service was good. The food was also good but nothing too special. I had the coquille St Jacques for an appetizer that had a rather sweet rose sauce. For the entree I had the mushroom ravioli which, guess what, had the same or very similar rose sauce as my appetizer. I really do not like it when kitchens do that. This place is not inexpensive.

Perfect French, Low Key, Not Pretentious!!

By mrevent |

I wanted to treat myself to the Blue Boheme experience having heard so many wonderful things about it. I started with a Basil Martini made with Pinnacle Vodka from France, of course, fresh muddled basil and a hint of citrus. I loved this herby cocktail. With that I had the escargots. The happy hour menu had Escargots with herb garlic butter, Pernod and tomatoes, the dinner menu had Cassoulet d'Escargot snails, mushroom, fennel, leeks and shallots with provençal butter. Mine was evidently the offspring of their coupling, I for sure had fennel, leeks and shallots, lots of butter and with a hint of cayenne and paprika, wow, some heat. With the Sadie Rose sour dough wheat bread it was so sopable I wish I'd had a dozen escargots but I'm glad I moved on to try other things. Next was the Croquettes du Crabe with remoulade and saffron aioli, two crab croquettes on maybe a jicama slaw with arugula and cherry tomatoes. I was thinking Sancerre with it but my server Angela had me try, from the Vins Blanc au Pichet menu, the Delais St. Esprit 2016 Côtes du Rhône Blanc and I was sold. Then it was the pièce de résistance, Chef Ken Irvine's special this evening, foie gras torchon with roasted black grapes, honey pear puree, rocket greens and fresh warm brioche. With that, again Angela's recommendation instead of my usual Sauterne, was the Lillet, is a wine-based aperitif produced in Podensac, near Bordeaux. It's a sweet and fruity dessert type wine. A good pairing but Angela said try champagne next time and see how I like it. I can't say enough about the restaurant, ambiance, service, and OH THE FOOD! If I were truly crazy I could do this ever other week maybe or until I'd exhausted the menu

Great happy hour menu

great mac & cheese, great service

By mailboxblondie |

had the mac and cheese as an app and it was soooo good! also had the soup and too sweet in my opinion, so i was a little dissapointed.had the boeuf bourginon and it was very good(not amazing)- dessert was profiteroles and they were AMAZING- i couldve eaten like 50 of those little things! Service is excellent atmosphere is great and super romantic. I would recommend and return, but it is very expensive so be aware! my tip: go when you can get the bohemian menu! it makes it a much better value, also remember wine prices are by 1/2 and 1/4 litter(so prices arent quite as bad when you remember that) still- with two 1/4 wine orders, appetizer of mac and cheese, and two boho pre fixe menu choices our meal was still 98(before tip).

Great french cuisine

By joe D |

3 different orders of mussels (dijon, blue cheese and other), all terrific. Yellow fin special excellent. The desserts were incredible. Chocolate mousse, creme brulee de vanilla well awesome. Wine list very good and service was top notch. Will go back when in town again.

Gem of a restaurant.

By Dory92064 |

Cute French 'bistro' type restaurant. Interior is causal & comfortable -- love the candles which adds a romantic touch. The 'Champagne Cart' is a very nice touch and a great way to start begin the evening. The waitress we had was friendly & professional. And the food is well prepared and flavorful -- no disappointments. There were three of us and we shared the Tarte Chaude au Reblouchon -- very good rich flavors, easily shared by two; the lobster crepe which my husband enjoyed (although the crepe looked thick) and my daughter had the Crab Croquettes , three large delicious croquettes easily shared by all three. For main dishes we enjoyed the Red Snapper, the Branzino and the Duroc Pork ribeye -- all very good. For dessert we shared the Gingerbread w/caramel ice cream. I love gingerbread and this was the best I've had -- the caramel ice, although good we didn't think paired well with the gingerbread -- a simple vanilla ice cream or an unsweetened shipped cream would have been better. We shared the brioche bread pudding, which was good, but a little two sweet for my taste and the coconut sprinkled on top detracted from the flavor of the bread pudding. All in all it was an enjoyable evening with very good food. We look forward to our next visit and trying difference items on the menu.

Tremendous disappointment

By pbridge1300 |

We've been eating at Bleu Boheme since the night they opened. We've brought friends for special occasions, and we've eaten light dinners at the bar many times. Over time, we went less often, because prices climbed, and quality fell. Recently, they blew it completely. They had advertised a special menu for Julia Child's birthday, sounded great. $60 prix-fixe, and we also ordered fairly expensive alcohol. Here's how it went: Fish soup with red pepper rouille -- tasty, nice. Best dish of the evening. Moules a la Bernaise -- three mussels sitting in an odd, gelatin-y cream. The chef must have learned a different Bernaise than I did, but regardless, Bernaise does not set like gelatin. Odd but not terrible. Pissadeliere Nicoise -- a few white anchovies over lightly carmelized onions, sitting on a sheet of pre-made, frozen puff pastry. Zero flavor. Well, that's not entirely true -- there was a tiny dollop of tapenade on top, which was nice. The rest of the dish, the dominant element was fat in the onions and in the puff pastry. Poor. Lobster Thermidor -- goodness, I had no idea it was even legal to harvest lobster that small. Or that they could be overcooked until they were that rubbery. Overcooked, with a bland drizzle of vague brown mushroom something. Lobster Thermidor is a very dated dish -- you hardly ever see it anymore, but it can be lovely, delicate, rich. This one was blah, and very overcooked, and we sent it back. Terrible. Fallen chocolate souffle -- more cake-like than I would expect a fallen souffle to be, and frankly, I don't think it ever actually was a souffle, but it was tasty and nicely presented. Service -- our watiress was waiting on far too many tables -- I think she had the entire room -- and she vanished into the kitchen for very long periods of time. But she was pleasant. The bus boys brought out courses while we were still eating the previous courses, and stood waiting, with the dishes in their hands, for us to finish, Then there was an unexplained 40-minute wait for the main course, which felt very odd after the frantic speed of the previous courses. No adjustment was made to the bill, despite our sending back the main course. I asked to speak to the manager, and the chef came out. When I told him our concerns, he argued, told us we were wrong, then took a token deduction off the bill. I responded by paying what I thought was an appropriate amount (too much, in retrospect), in cash, and by handing a generous tip directly to the waitress, in cash. So, a disappointing evening, when we had been looking forward to a very special evening. Poor food, poor service, and an argumentative attitude from the chef/owner, who had lost control over his kitchen, and who was unable to handle the dinner rush. Bummer. Here's the ultimate insult: I am not a fan of Cohn Restaurants (although I am grateful for the Cohn's civic contributions). Two years ago, at the old Thee Bungalow, they put on a Julia dinner, and my wife persuaded me to go. Their food was much better than that offered last night by Chef Ken Irvine.

Romantic French Restaurant

By Susie1028 |

Bleu Boheme is a charming, cozy, and romantic candlelit French restaurant located in the historic Kensington neighborhood of San Diego. They have the best happy hour around, from 5-6 daily, bar seating only. Drinks are 50% off and there are deals on food, too. I love their mussels and a basil martini served up by the fabulous bartender Gigi.

French country dining in Kensington

By PtLomafoodie |

First visit taken during restaurant week. Plenty of empty tables on a week night, but the hostess had us wait for a table. Then had a loud talking group of 3 sit at the table next to us. Puzzling when we could have been spaced further apart with all the unused tables. Dining Room has hard surfaces and was quite loud. The dripping candles on candlestick at each table was a nice romantic touch. Mussels not as good as other French bistros. the top portion of mussels were dry, as if the broth had drained to the bottom of the pot long before it reached the customer. Rustic sourdough bread was warm , fresh & quite good. The moist salmon was excellent on a bed of spinach & a cream sauce with diced tomato. Save room for dessert. I highly recommend the chocolate mousse with berries. The waiter did recommend a delicious Chardonnay from France that was oaky & buttery that was not on the menu. Kudos to the waiter.

Go to neighborhood bistro

By Winehen |

We've been here several times over the years since it's close to our home and we love French food. I've never been let down, lunch or dinner. They serve several varieties of mussels plus the traditional French standbys. They do a very good job with fish too. I'd recommend it to either visitor or local.

Delicious Food in a Fun & Loud Neighborhood Spot

By Joseph L |

I found Bleu Boheme to be a very charming restaurant, with good service and wonderful food. A family member recommended it and I'm very glad we took her up on it! Great service by Angel(ic)a and the food was wonderful. There were five of us so we had the menu fairly well covered. Everything was nicely presented and was expertly prepared. The restaurant has a cozy charm to it, though it was extremely loud. This gave the place buzz but I much preferred it later when there were fewer diners. Nice looking bar that many people (neighbors?) seemed to be enjoying on a Friday night. Can't say when I'll be in San Diego again, but I would definitely return. Good job all around.

Blah Bohème

By groupwww |

Disappointing in every way: moules frites au harissa with absolutely no hint of harissa; confit of duck on too sweet lentils, profiteroles that are cream puffs split in half with a bit of vanilla ice cream in the center and a drizzle of chocolate sauce. The service was in line with the food.

A very happy, Happy Hour

By Countrygal74 |

A wonderful happy hour with a wonderful selection of mussels and wine at great prices. Attentive service and a relaxed atmosphere. Arrive on time or miss the busy happy hour offers.

Low Key French

By Fosterjlf |

Very good French food in a busy neighborhood. A step up from a bistro. Many small plates, large number of moule choices plus larger entree plates. Charcuterie was nice with enough for three. For entres we had salmon, ravioli & steak/frites. All were expertly prepared & tasty. However, the cheese gnocchi with the salmon did not work for us. Wine list while usually very good seems to have less whole bottles available than in the past. Warm gingerbread with ice cream was superb. Service was prompt & accomodating.

Restaurant Week!

By joandodge |

Going out to eat during Restaurant Week is almost like going to a restaurant on Valentine's Day or Mother's Day. Food's usually good, but the service can be rushed and spotty. Not at Bleu Boheme!! We made a reservation for 9:00 p.m. at this lovely French bistro where we dined several months ago. Unfortunately, I have recently broken my leg and am getting around in a wheel chair until fully healed. No problem whatsoever at Bleu Boheme. They seated us at an easily accessible table where I could transfer myself into their chair. Our server, Faith, was immediately attentive helping us select a suitable wine for our dinner choices. I had the mussels Provencal for an appetizer and my spouse had the charcuterie plate. For entrees, he had the pork ribeye and I had the chicken dish. I would have had the fish selection, however, it was halibut and I'm not a fan of this fish. For dessert I had the crepe stuffed with crème brulee and he had the chocolate mousse. Everything was FABULOUS! For me, especially, the mussels and I love them. Fortunately, mussels are a staple menu item for Bleu Boheme. Faith took extraordinary care of us, but was not intrusive. We dined leisurely even tho the restaurant was fully booked up. We didn't feel like we were crowded or rushed whatsoever. Not an easy feat during Restaurant Week. Please try this restaurant - everything is truly prepared exquisitely and the service is impeccable!

Pretty Pricey for a Neighborhood Restaurant

By Sooz C |

We love the ambience and decor! We were surprised how busy it was on a rainy Thursday so would suggest reservations. That said, while the mussels and salad were good, it is pretty pricey compared to what other restaurants in their same league charge.

Don’t expect French food here

By A A |

Excellent atmosphere just as expected when booked for our special occasion. Super nice touch from the Resturant having prepared a signed birthday card upon our arrival. Service was impeccable. Bread was fantastic. Now… the food unfortunately was a big disappointment. Onion soup served warm. It had floating dry herbs that changed the flavor to something else. Why was it sweet, I never understood. The “fondue” was simply a warm chunk of cheese - not much prep there. Steak frites - meat cooked ok but again lacked the French touch - felt as if it was made in an oven with tons of overcooked onions. Welted arugula did not help the plating nor the flavor. $230 for 2 left us underwhelmed and a bit sad for such a place - it must have been nice at one point. I would have a chat with the chef to see what happened to his/her motivation.

A true treasure

By John K |

This is up in Kensington, a little out of the way, but wow! What a discovery. Went with a friend and I was truly impresses with the service and stunned by the food. Had pork ribeye and was the best I have ever had. Really recommend it. Well worth the time to get there.

I am not joking!

By Bernard C. La Borie |

Actually, I do not know where to begin. The food experience at Bleu Bohéme was absolutely unacceptable for a gourmet restaurant. This was my first time at this eatery and I had such high expectations. The place is so charming you just expect the kitchen to put out delightful food. I had the escargots de la Vielle. I’ve had escargots hundred’s of times, and this was the worst I’ve ever had. First of all, they were lukewarm! They looked like they were left over from a previous dinner. Tiny, rubbery in a sauce that was so inappropriate I was in disbelief. No hot butter, garlic sense to it at all. My main course was Poulet Roti! It was as tough as shoe leather (It made Costco roasted chicken like it came from the French Laundry). Not an ounce of juice or flavor! Just disgusting. The French beans on the side were cool at best and the mashed potato base was horrible. There is absolutely zero excuse for a high-end restaurant to put food out like this! The manager was gracious and didn’t charge me for the chicken dish, but this is not the point. I walked out of there paying over $150.00 (there were two of us). The overall food preparation and quality should never have been presented in such a fashion. The owners really need to evaluate their entire kitchen operation. Many professional people work in a kitchen and for this meal to have been presented to me was a complete failure of the system. Oh, and by the way, they are so impressed with their wines by the glass (carafe) program yet failed to even have a white or red burgundy offering! And this is supposed to be a “French restaurant’. What a horrible experience. It has to go down as the worst gourmet restaurant experience I’ve ever had! I would have been happier going out and buying 150 dollars with of lottery tickets.

Nice restaurant and good food!!!

Good service, good food and fresh fish. The "tarte chaude Reblochon" was delicious as well as the "Pate et terrine du chef".

Great find away from downtown

By CMJ475 |

Lovely small neighborhood restaurant away from downtown. Can eat indoors or out. Small but good menu. Moules & frites are the main attractions. Other choices too for the nonseafoodies. Lots of great appetizers (big) and salads too. Mussels were terrific and the fries even better. If you like moules & frites this is the place. Nice attentive service. And profiteroles!

Wonderful French food, great atmosphere

By NVTravelers |

Was in SD during the week of July 20th for a week of training. Since I was on my own, I wanted to try the local fare, and somewhere new each day, and I really had my heart set on a French restaurant. Picked this place based on the reviews, and it was pretty near my hotel in Mission Valley. Location is great - located in the quaint neighborhood of Kensington. There is parking for this restaurant, but it's pretty limited. So, like most of these neighborhoods in SD, there's mostly street parking - but didn't have park too far, and the neighborhood seemed pretty safe. The décor and atmosphere were great. There's like a bar area, and I think it has regular seating too, but I was put in the neighboring section - seemed a little quieter and more relaxed. Since I was by myself, I was put in one of the two seater tables in the window - ended up loving my table. Had the choice of a chair or sitting in the window seat - while the chair would have given me a view out to the street and people watching, I choose the window seat which was really comfy - great to sit back and relax in with a glass of wine and to read my book. The food was delicious too! Would definitely recommend this place on the food alone - I thought it was great. Prices are a little steep, but that's pretty typical of a French restaurant - well worth the price though. Check out the prices before you go though so you're not surprised. I happened to be there on a Tuesday, and they do their Bohemian Menu all day Tuesday - this is a great value for all of the food that you get. Unfortunately, the items that I wanted were on this menu, and I ended up ordering from the regular menu. As an appetizer, I got the Coquilles St Jacques - sea scallops in a wonderful light sauce. And as my main entrée, I got the Poulet Montrachet - chicken breast wrapped with prosciutto, with gnocchi and a goat cheese mushroom sauce. Normally I don't eat this much food, but it was so delicious, I ate almost all of it. The crusty bread that's served complimentary was also really good - and rustic tasting too, if that's possible. Everything just had really good flavor. Service was pretty good too for the most part - pretty attentive, until there was a shift change. Then my little lonesome got forgotten about, and the manager ended up having to take care of my bill. On the whole though, this was a great experience, wonderful food, great atmosphere. Definitely would recommend this to anyone looking for a great place to eat in SD.

Not up to their usual standard

By boomerdog2 |

Although we have been to this restaurant many times and have had good experiences, yesterday we went for lunch with another couple and had a disappointing meal. The other lady and I both had the smoked salmon sandwich, the dish I usually order; the salmon was very soft and mushy, not the fine texture it normally is. When we complained to the waitress, she very condescendingly said, "It id not grilled salmon, you know!" We both left most of the sandwiches and will probably not be back for some time.

One Night Ony

By julienM3514OY |

Went here for the special Christmas Eve Menu. Without wine, the bill for two was $160.00 including tip. This restaurant has a nice atmosphere and good service, but the food portions are tiny and mono-flavorous as if they came out of the same pan. My first course was lamb ravioli: three Mexican-hat-shaped dumplings with a knot of lamb, swimming in a supposed Beaujolais reduction that tasted positively Asian. My companion's plate contained 2 gumball sized crab cakes with a dot of white sauce on the top. The main courses: for me, Boeuf Roguefort with haricots verts & mashed potatoes. The meat; tender, plain and salty. My companion's: Salmon Béarnaise with 5 tiny halves of rosemary potatoes and 4 halved cherry tomatoes. Anyone could have pulled off this dish with minimal training in the kitchen and $13 for Whole Foods ingredients. The dessert followed: Gateau aux Trois Fromages and Pain d'Epice. The cheesecake was about the size of a small arrowhead with a chunk already missing from poor cutting in the kitchen. The gingerbread was nothing tastier than what you might find at Ralph's (read: sugar!) Frankly, the name of the game here seems to be getting the food cost down to the minimum, running it all through the de-flavorizor and placing it in front of well-heeled San Diegans. In France a meal like this would cost about 50 euros tops and you wouldn't go again.

Say Chèvre

By VerandaKitty |

An LA Times writer says that we shouldn't order just plain old goat cheese. In fact, she says we should "say chèvre." That's pronounced "shev hruh." That's exactly what I did at Bleu Boheme, a cozy little French restaurant in the Kensington area of San Diego. The salad is called Salade de Chèvre Chaud and is a beautiful bowl of mixed greens with goat cheese, grapes, shaved pear and mustard vinaigrette. This fabulous salad of very fresh ingredients was only $14.50 in the generously sized lunch portion. An extra delight was the freshly baked bread. The restaurant was quite noisy at about 1 pm, but by 2:30 the place was almost empty on a Sunday afternoon. My friend and I went elsewhere for coffee and dessert. The Bleu Boheme closes between 3 and 5 pm, then reopens for dinner. Parking is available on the street.

French Bistro Ambience a 4 Star; Cuisine almost as good!

By ahdenton |

We dined here for Restaurant Week. If you are looking for a charming authentic French Bistro type experience with stone walls, melted wax dripping from candelabras, and outdoor sidewalk seating with twinkle lights, then this place is for you! It was a perfect place to get out of the normal rut of usual suspect restaurants and try something charming and different in a new neighborhood for a fun date night. If you stick to the traditional French cuisine, you will have the best luck i.e French onion soup, etc. I was excited to try the mussels as I had heard so much about them here, but they were a bit too fishy in smell and taste (I know they're mussels, but still...) The service was great and we were sitting next to a table full of French speakers, so that's always a good sign at a French restaurant. It's not the best French bistro I've ever had...somewhere almost near the top, but not quite the sublime French bistro dining experience I was hoping for! P.S. I don't recommend the Cote de Rhone on the wine special...it was very tart. But otherwise, the atmosphere makes up for everything and it was a very enjoyable evening overall!

When we need a unique experience

By Jay A |

The chef/owner has spent many years in France and his experiences influence the menu. We found the front room too noisy and complained later. He offered us a different, quieter room for future visits. This place has a bistro ambiance and a bit of funkyness as well. It is warm, cozy and interesting with a serious staff, wanting to please and provide a unique dining experience.

nice evening

Very nice bistro with romantic atmosphere and good food. Our service was attentive and thoughtful. The small plates were really almost main course size. The steak tartar was certainly a meal and was great. All the main courses at our table were very good. Great ginger bread desert.

Les Moules Frites Extraordinaire

By CindyClarkBar |

Bleu Boheme is charming as can be. You'll feel like you are tucked in a corner cafe in Paris. Service is attentive, but not rushed. Wine offered in "pitchets" provides the option to taste several wines from their great wine list. And the bleu cheese martini was the smoothest ever. Les Moules Frites options are so vast, it keeps bringing us back again and again. Don't miss the homemade chocolate mousse - must save room! Stroll to Bleu Boheme and enjoy an evening in Paris!

we visited this resturant while visiting my brother who lives in San Diego and just one block away from this amazing resturant, the food was as good as you can get, French Cuisine at its best, a simple must visit resturant if your within a 15 mile radius this place is simple worth the travel , a 3 course meal and a bottle or two of petit Chablis , to die for, miss this and you will regret it.

We went with some local friends here for happy hour last night. We were blown away. I have never eaten such delicious muscles....ever! Good Tues 3 course dinner

By sdgt625 |

This review is based solely on the items on the Tuesday night 3 course dinner . Sampled the snails appetizer dish - loved the snails themselves - very tender , good texture . The sauce that it came in was a little too spicy. Also tried the patè , which was outstanding . For main , my duck leg dish was awesome - the duck meat tasted perfect . I sampled my friends steak , which was good but not wow. For desert , the white chocolate bread pudding was amazing , but the profiterole was disappointing- it looked and tasted like a cream puff. Good value overall , pleasant setting .

Visited this place with extended family on a trip to San Diego. An atmosphere, food selection, quality of a food and wine, service deserve nothing but exclamation marks. You will be treated well and guarantee to have a memorable dinner

Evolving Menu brings a touch of Paris

By SOCALGourmet |

When we recently took friends from Washington, DC, to Bleu Boheme, we could not have had a more enjoyable evening. From ice-cold martinis to scrumptious desserts, all of us enjoyed every appetizer and entree. Ken Irvine continues to evolve and enhance the menu, and old favorites have been replaced with new favorites. Other than one spot in Paris, and two in Brussels, no one does a better job with 'moules' -- try the Mussels au Champignon with wild mushrooms, bacon, shallots and white wine -- bodacious! A new favorite was the Fletan (halibut) Oscar, sautéed with crabmeat, thin asparagus, a tomato garnish with baby yellow Yukon potatoes and a very delicate Bernaise sauce. If you like the parts; you'll love the whole entree. And, as always, very personable staff and great service. Enjoy!

Food and atmosphere!

Really fun evening at Blue Boheme starting with the amazing atmosphere and ambiance, great place to celebrate, be seen or have a romantic evening out. Service was casual and friendly if a tad slow, just a little too long to get water and drinks and once they were ordered again, just took a little too long. They did an excellent job of coursing out our shared appetizer, soup/salad and then mains. The Planche (meat and cheese charcuterie board) was the absolute all star of the evening with 4-5 gourmet meats and another 4-5 gourmet cheeses, great picked veggies and a delicious pate. The Salad Tomate ancien, with buratta was delicious but if I had to find an issue, some of the tomatoes were a bit mushy. Two ordered the French onion soup which was declared good, but not as good as last time, and may have been missing some seasoning in the broth. Two had salmon which they enjoyed. The duck leg confit was good but could have been physically hotter and needed a bit of seasoning- the star of that plate being the goat cheese polenta and sautéed garliced greens. Filet for steak frites was excellent. Desserts were very good and the tasty, anniversary mouse was appreciated. Nice wine list and well mixed cocktails. Price not for the feint of heart but well worth it, definitely a special evening out

Not Impressed..C minus

My major problem with his place was the service. We were seated outside as we requested. It was only 5 pm and it was still nice outside. Menus were presented quickly. A short time later our waitress came to take drink orders. Two glasses of water and a glass of wine. Oh my!! Drink service was so slow.. I didn't time it but I should have. (Mind you the restaurant was not busy.) Our orders were taken. Two in my party ordered from the prix fixe menu. 3 courses for $30 was a good deal.... I found no entree on that menu that appealed to me and had difficulty finding something I wanted on the regular menu. The selection is not that varied. The catch of the day was farm raised which is not my idea of "real seafood". The menu said "Maine sea scallops" but, when asked, the waitress said they weren't from Maine! I settled on a macaroni and cheese type of dish. I started to time things now, just out of curiosity. We were served bread a few minutes before our delayed drinks. After our orders were taken, it was 22 minutes before we were served our salads. (We all 3 ordered the same so it wasn't complicated.). We leisurely ate our salads and waited and waited and WAITED. The person who FINALLY took our plates...26 min. after we finished...asked, "Did you order anything else?" I responded, "Well we thought we did." It was so incredulous I forgot to time how long it took to get our entrees!! They arrived, we ate, we finished, we waited. By the time we got our check, we wanted to be gone!! I got out my credit card and took it, with the bill, inside. The fact....they were SLOW. Our opinions, the menu is limited, the prices are expensive for what you get (the prix fixe is the exception) and the food is mediocre. There are many very good restaurants in this area. This isn't one.

2 Times to get it right

By Howard R |

Arrived at 6 for restaurant week. Personable hostess gave us a table right away. We ordered a bottle of wine while perusing the menu. We ordered the Moules A La Crème d ail and the La Charcuterie for our appetizers. They arrived in a few minutes along with a loaf of fresh bread and creamed butter. Both were excellent and the Mussels were in abundance. For the main course, it was a New York Au Poive ($6 more) and the Entrecote de porc. We then waited and waited for the entrée to arrive. 40 minutes later they were placed on our table. Both meats were way undercooked, nearly raw so we sent them back. In the interim the manager brought us a tray of appetizers to apologize for the wait and the raw meat. Since we had finished our bottle of wine the waitress brought a small pitcher of house red. I am impressed with this. The second round appears and is cooked and delicious. Meats were tender and cooked perfectly this time. I am not fond of my meat portion placed on top of the sides. I want to see my food all at once. Maybe picky but are they hiding something? Sides were spinach and mashed potatoes in a heavenly sauce that covered the entire plate. Nice size portions as well. Both our deserts were wonderful and complimented the meal nicely.

One of our favorite restaurants.

By Trojanox |

Had a really great lunch here on 12/31/11. Nice beer and wine list, with my only knock being Strauss Tower 10 as the only beer on tap... And with such a nice bottle list I was disappointed that the only beer on tap was so different than most of the list. On to lunch, where I had a very good Saumon Fume sandwich with a side salad, and my wife had a pretty savory mushroom crepe. ------------------------------- 2nd visit just as good as the first... if not better. We had a couple smaller plates to split. Typically we steer away from Calamari, since various restaurants seem to have very similar takes on the dish. For some reason we ended up going for it and we're glad we did. It's not that it was considerably different on the most basic level, but the amount of polish made it outstanding. What stands out the most is the addition of the capers... made the dish, and not something you see everywhere. We also had a small order of Moules and Frites, also pretty outstanding. After our small plates we decided on a Nutella Crepe. Maybe it's been too long since we've been to Paris, but this was like travelling back... to that first crepe under the Eiffel. Sounds a little over the top, but that's exactly where I was after that first bite. The service was wonderful and I withdraw my comment about Strauss Tower 10 from the first visit. Although I have no idea what was on tap this time around, I no longer care. This is a great restaurant and we'll be back.

Haute cuisine. Delicious

By 27xoros |

We went there of our Thanksgiving dinner . We had been there before. The food was excellent. We usually have a fantastic waitress. That night the service was so so, I do not think the waiter was professional. He did his best.If you change an item in the menu lat your customer before your serve them.

Paris in San Diego

By Hera M |

The complimentary bread and butter is amazing at this place. It reminded me of the bread from the French countryside complete with heavenly whipped butter. We also had the Boeuf Bourguignon-fabulous, Salade Maison-excellent, French Onion Soup-just ok, Steak Frites-just ok. Both desserts were also just mediocre, Profiteroles and ChocolateMousse. The ambiance is super cute. From the outside to the inside, it feels like you just momentarily stepped into Paris. I would love to return and try other items from the menu next time we’re in San Diego.

Very expensive there are better options

By coronadolrm |

The prices are over the top for a casual restaurant serving good but not fantastic French food. San Diego has several other French restaurants that serve better food for substantially less money.

Great French Bistro

By TheAnvil |

If you're visiting San Diego and are I the mood for some great French food, look no further. This is your spot. The food is amazing, the service is great & the prices are reasonable. Highly recommended! Good wine list as well.

Great French Restaurant in Kensington.

By A. Vinnie V |

Bleu Boheme Restaurant is a wonderful restaurant in San Diego in the Kensington neighborhood. Very warm and rustic feel. Staff is great. Great cheese and meat plates. Great selection of wines. They have a nice Happy Hour. On a nice day sit outside and enjoy a nice lunch or dinner. Great place for a date.

Every birthday and anniversary

By Bryson |

We absolutely love Bleu Boheme!! Chef Ken has been so kind to us to help us reserve their dining room for our wedding dinner 3 years ago. Since then we’ve always come back for our anniversaries and birthdays. They have a great happy hour, but come early! The bar fills up quick and parking is difficult as they share a lot with other local businesses. For restaurant week in San Diego this place is always a great value. I love the pork and steak dishes they serve and I am always happy with their charcuterie board. The desserts are fabulous all year round. All in all, no place can beat Bleu Boheme for our nice and casual dinners.

Bleu Boheme continues to please

By David B |

This is about a recent visit to Bleu Boheme. We have been here a couple of times over the past couple of years, and have not been back for close to a year. The experience the first couple of times was very good, as was the case with our diner there last week. The ambiance is relaxing, cozy - candles on the tables that give a soft light. Service is overall good. I had the pork dish, which was excellent. Others had the evening's special, which was a steak creatively prepared. We all had salads, which where pretty good. There was an order of mussels for the table in a wonderful sauce. The menu said that the mussels were imported from France; I wondered why they didn't serve fresh, local mussels: Carlsbad has a mussel farm, and the mussels are every bit as good as the ones that were served. There was one issue that I would like to address: the specials were close to $40, which is about $10 more than the next most costly entree on the regular menu. I thought that the dish, while very good, was somewhat overpriced. Certainly, the server should have, when describing the specials should have stated the cost of each. However, this review is about a fine meal, in a fine restaurant, that has maintained consistently high standards and continues to provide an excellent experience,

Wonderful experience!

By dianne p |

Absolutely fantastic food and excellent service! My son and daughter in law had their wedding reception/dinner here and everything was delicious, perfectly prepared, and beautifully presented - and that was for a party of 50!!!

Great local option

By Mark P |

Interesting to read the other reviews. If your primary purpose is to have a great dinner, well-served, with someone you love or would like to love--this is a great option. The food, from our perspective, was wonderful--the sweet potato soup and the New York steak with butter-poached fingerling potatoes were especially noteworthy. The service was very attentive without being invasive. When we let our waiter know we had tickets to a movie at the Ken across the street, he made a point of expediting our order. We struck up a conversatoin with the couple at the next table--the son and daughter of one of the people who helped get the "Kensington" street sign put up. We've lived in the neighborhood for five years and had had Bleu Boheme on our list for most of that time. So glad we finally had our first meal there. Highly recommended.

Sunday Brunch

By AuldMoney |

We've had brunch at BB before, but that was a few years ago. And since we love going out for Sunday Brunch, we thought we'd give it another shot, since it's only a few miles from where we live. It's a charming restaurant, but for those looking for a quiet meal, just know that it can get loud in the main room. My entree was very good, the omelet was cooked perfectly and there was just the right amount of cheese, bacon, etc. My gf's benedict left her a little disappointed. The english muffins were not very tasty and she left 1 1/2 of the two that came with her dish. We also started with some nice warm bread (which came with butter and jelly - it was not jam!). I'd give the food, ambiance and presentation four stars. We also ordered coffee, which was terrible. For a restaurant that buys local and sustainable products when possible, I wish they would use a local coffee roaster. SD has some great new coffee roasters (Coffee & Tea Collective, Cafe Moto and Revolution Coffee Roasters). The reason for the Average rating was for the service. Maybe our server was having a bad morning, who knows. Everyone has a bad day, so we'll give it another shot in a few months and maybe sit at the bar next time.

Great Food, Great Service, Needs a Few Paintings!

By Mary B |

We visited last weekend on the recommendation of a client who lives in the area. First of all, Kensington is a great area to simply drive through because of the charm of its architecture. I used to dine quite frequently in the previous establishment. My friend chose the mussels, and I chose crabcakes. We were both happy with our choices. What was irrisistable was the crusty brown bread, though. I also enjoyed having wine from the Cotes de Rhone, since I have pleasant memories of it. The collection of melted wax candlesticks was interesting and there were a few huge bouquets of colorful flowers. Perhaps I am a little biased, because the previous restaurant had lovely paintings on the walls. In my opinion, they would nicely contrast the very, very brown walls.

We want to be time after time.

By profgold |

We ended up going for happy hour in the bar and it was terrific! Great service, great food and great drinks. We tried five of their appetizers and everyone one was excellent. We have also tried dinner there and have been very pleased. The only problem is that it was a bit crowded. We almost didn't get any place at the bar.

Simply Superb

By sflambert |

This was an absolute treat. From the 4 different sauces available for the moule frite to the moderately-priced but well-balanced wine list, this is what a French restaurant is supposed to be. The four of us ate on the sidewalk patio. Traffic noise was a little distracting, but it was a perfectly warm summer evening, so we didn't mind. The highlights were the lobster crepe, mussels and the duck confit. Service was prompt and friendly

Tres Magnifecente

By sasaut |

We had a wonderful meal, all of our meals wer great! The french onion soup had a sweet spanish onion flavor, very nice. The brie, apple and lardon tarte was beautifully served and tasted fabulous. The beef dishes were quite tender and flavorful along with the crispy shallots. For dessert the creme brulee crepe was the winner. The bohemian menu (prix fixe) was a very good deal at $24 and included entree, small plate and dessert. Our server was friendly and the ambiance was perfect french.

Best Mussels on the Planet

By lab007 |

Well, the best mussels I have tastes on this planet. I love mussels. The ones they have here come in a dozen or so different broths. We had the blue cheese, the mushroom and tomatoes and the mushrooms/bacon. All were incredibly wonderful. You;ll get a nice sourdough crusty bread for dipping. We went during happy hour (5p-6p) and arrived early enough to sit outside on a beautiful San Diego afternoon/evening. The place gets packed for the happy hour specials, so don't be late. Total bill for 3 plates of mussels (and the fries are some of the best) and a half bottle of wine: $60 including tip. And a thanks to the servers, who work off their fanny.

Oooo la-la, C'est Magnifique!

By Lori C |

In a word, "wow." Love martinis and good wine? Love beautiful, romantic settings? Love ambiance? How about great food? Terrific waitstaff who pace the meal nicely? Creative dining? Then Bleu Boheme is for you. I went with 3 others and we all ordered martinis and mussels. I had the basil martini which was amazing and the provencial mussels with a fabulous sauce. Oh, and did someone say dessert? Chocolate mousse? We all left feeling happy and satisfied.

Great Food in Charming French County Setting

By Nancy J |

Bleu Boheme is a restaurant we have reserved for special occasions. Some dishes are pricey. For mussel aficiondaos, the mussel dishes they feature are popular. Staff has always been accommodating.

Nothing to get excited about

By mr49phil |

Just visited there on June 3rd, this was a birthday dinner for my neighbor whom is from France. We had 3 different orders of moules fritts and none of them were more than average in flavor. I have to admit, last June we were in Belgium where the dish is very popular and served almost everywhere and generally excellent. One of the orders was with a sausage and mussels and the sausage seemed to have have the look and taste of a chopped up hot dog, very dissapointing. I will admit that the fries were very good. Service was well below average, The waitress seemed to be indifferent, she never came back to fill our water glasses, pour more wine from our bottle ( the corkage fee is $15 which is a little pricey for the quality of the restaurant). She took our order and pretty much left everything else up to the rest of the people working there to service our table. During the meal some of our used utensils were taken away with the different courses and never returned. We had to flag people down so we could have silverware to eat with and refils on beverages. We dined at 5 PM so the poor service was not related to a busy time of day. We did have desert and it was without a doubt the best part of the meal. For the prices they charge, the food should have tasted much better, basically it was generally bland. Service left all of us with the attitude that this is a first and last visit to this establishment. If you want better tasting French cuisine and good attentive service, try Hexagone in San Diego.

Competent, inventive, pleasant, intimate, relaxing ambiance

By David B |

Somewhat pricy, but not overly so. Wine list, a little high. Corkage was $15: I recommend bring your own wine. Onion soup, at $9, was just OK. The salads were pretty good, but pricy at $12+. My wife had the lobster crepe, pretty good, delicate flavor. I had pork loin, which was very good. Food plated and presented quite well. Atmosphere is dark, subdued, quite relaxing. Definitely a come back to place.

Finally open

By JimmyJackk |

My wife’s birthday was suppose to be in France today but we know that couldn’t happened so we went here because as of Thursday it was allowed again. Food was lovely service was great and everyone social distanced.

Very nice great atmosphere

By EuropeCosmicTravel |

Decided we wanted french for dinner and gave the place a go. A little disappointed they didn't serve authentic french cider but they have an extensive wine and beer menu. Started with the cheese platter which was a lot of cheese. We had the crab cakes as well but they were a bit bland. The pork dish was phenomenal though the spinach side dish was a little sweet. My fiancée had the scallops which were perfectly cooked and he loved the mushrooms. Ended the night with a rich and delicious chocolate mousse. Overall a nice place with great atmosphere. They do have a small Parkin go lot out back but even that is full at times. I wish you could hear a little music in the back room where we were seated but the nice window seated made up for it. Definitely reccomend if you don't mind the price tag. Portions were good for the price and service was very friendly and attentive.

No AC

By Bill E |

This place is great for happy hour. However when we were there, no AC was on or they don't have it. We almost left because it was so hot. Actually there was a party of 4 that came in and said out loud "oh no AC we are not staying."

Dependably good French food

By Robert L |

Mussels are the star here for us, but all classic french dishes very good. We have been there maybe 25 times and never dissatisfied

If you love mussels this is the place to get them!

By born2bwild |

There is no one place in San Diego that has as many different recipes for "moules" (mussels) as does this restaurant....and they are ALL great! My mussel loving friends and I all order different kinds and then share them. Mussels in savory saffron cream, mussels in rich roquefort, fabulous mussels with wild mushrooms and bacon, mussels with spicy sausage...and if that isn't enough, they even have a cassoulet with mussels! Of course, no respectable mussel dish is complete without pomme frites and the french fries at Bleu Boheme are also outstanding. A good wine selection tops off all that I need for a wonderful meal and a fun evening.

Awesome atmosphere and service

By theimig |

The ambience in this place is nice and romantic. Appetizers were not good including French onion soup and crab cakes. Entrees were better but we did not save room for dessert. Overall the food was underwhelming. If you're in the Kensington neighborhood, would recommend Fish Public strongly.

French oasis!

By Mickey M |

My friend and I were searching for lunch on an extremely hot day, and she really wanted moules frites. We knew Bleu Boheme would have 'em...and did they ever! Made six different ways. Fantastic basil martini. The ambiance is great, a lovely place to relax and enjoy the incredible food, drinks and surroundings. We will definitely be back for more! After all, they make moules frites six different ways!

Excellent French Restaurant in San Diego

By George M |

Wow... Blue Boheme in the Kensington area of San Diego is unique and wonderful. Excellent French cuisine in a suburb of San Diego. We went for dinner and enjoyed cocktails with our pate dish which included both duck and pork pates each prepared differently. We ordered both a pork and beef filet prepared in a typical French manner with excellent sauces and fried shallots. If you are in need of an excellent French prepared meal when you are in San Diego make a point to visit Bleu Boheme.

Delicious, interesting food

By Joann A |

Food and servers were wonderful. Menu was imaginative. Meals took quite a while to appear. Warm, fresh bread and butter helped.

French Food in San Diego

By dlombardi |

Loved our visit to Bleu Boheme. It brought back memories of Paris. We will definitely go back. Food, service and atmosphere were all great.

Atmosphere & Lemonade A+

By LindsayRose |

Loved the atmosphere and house made lemonade. But arriving 30 min to closing, even with a reservation and ordering quickly, the staff seemed anxious to get us out. The music was turned up more loudly and the staff from the kitchen kept sticking their head out to see if we were leaving. We weren't the last table there, and our ordering was interrupted to greet and sit another table, then to help another table. So my family had given their food orders and gotten their wine before I even got asked what I wanted or given anything to drink. Also, the menu lacks a bit but the bread and duck were great. I'd consider changing the sides on the duck but my sister-in-law liked it.

As San Diego locals, this is one of our "go-to" places

By ScotProf |

About once a month, we go to the Ken Cinema. Aside from the good movies shown there, there's an additional advantage - it's about 100 yards away from this excellent French restaurant. So, whenever we attend the Ken, we dine first at Bleu Boheme. It is reliably excellent. Service is friendly & efficient. Food great. Beer terrific. And they serve wine by the quater & half carafe, which is perfect. I've seen some so-so reviews posted this past few weeks - mainly during "Restaurant Week", apparently. I wouldn't judge a place based solely on that. Judge it during the other 51 weeks of the year......

Great

By DonaldandDaphne |

We were here on our second visit to San Diego, and we were taken their by our friends. It was delicious. It was small and intimate, and had great food.

A real Frenchman would be hurt!

By bdrivers |

Well, this place fills its tables and tops the lists so I must be wrong. But there is little resemblance to good French cooking and the dinners served here. The floors look like a warehouse, the toilets are pretty tacky but I guess you don’t go there for that.meals were swamped with cheap vegetables to add a bulk or maybe hide the shortcomings of the main part.wine list extensive but overpriced. And it is a real enigma, lovely ladies in dressy cocktail tops or dresses yet people with clothes bought in poundland snd scruffy sneakers eat alongside each other. Service went AWOL for us. Our waitress vanished into the dark after taking the order and we had to chase the busboy to get any service.meal took far too long Pricing is vulgar ,I mean $15 incl tip etc for a bowl of onion soup which is as cheap as chips to make.and they don’t even give you a proper soup spoon as they don’t have any,I ask you! Kiss goodbye for at least $150 for two courses each and a bottle of wine Still as I said it’s very popular ,just a shame people don’t know about real French food. Pull your socks up,you have to be capable of better!

Birthday Dinner with friends

By Pablo C |

Went to dinner with 4 of our friends to celebrate a birthday. We had reservations right when they opened and there was a line already at the door. I believe that happy hour started at open time. We had a table towards the back of the restaurant, but with a slight view of the outside. The waitress was very prompt, courteous, and knowledgeable of their menu. We ordered ordered ordered our drinks and then our meals. They had a price fixed menu offered from 5-6 PM, so we decided to order from that menu ($32 per person). This was three courses (appetizer, main, and dessert). Food came out pretty quick and the taste was on point! They also provided bread for the table. We had an enjoyable night with friends and the restaurant was a hit! Will return in the near future.

Not one of my best meals ever but very very close

By JimmyJackk |

Terrific restaurant. Superb service. Had Gnocchi appetizer and it was terrific. My wife had the Poulet and loved it. Our friends loved their food as well. Great atmosphere. Sat at the table for over 2 hours and hardly anyone came and went. European style dinning experience. Will return again soon.

it's ok

By Nari L |

This place was ok. I think it was way too hyped up for me. I came here on a Fri night with my bf. We opted to sit outside bc we had my dog. We came here for Restaurant Week. I honestly think I have had better French before. We got the Soupe a l'Oignon Gratinee which is like a French Onion soup but with Spanish Onions instead. This was really good. We also had the Coquilled St Jacques which was really good as well. For the main we ordered the Fletan "Oscar" which is a local halibut which was good but not amazing. I had the Supreme de Poulet Farci which was a chicken breast roasted with Chevre goat cheese. This was disappointing. It lacked flavor. For the dessert we had the Mousse au Chocolat which is a dark chocolate mousse with berries. This was good but not amazing. I'm not sure if I'd get it again. We also got the profiteroles which were more like ice cream sandwiches. This was better than the mousse, I think. All in all, it's dog friendly which is a plus. This place was really busy too. Maybe I just need to order some other things to like this place better.

French restaurant with many of the standards, but lacking execution

By jim41752 |

Ate here tonight. This is a French restaurant with many of the standards in a normal French restaurant, but it seems lacking in quality, as well as the general execution of the restaurant. There is no prix fixe menu, and when i inquired about it, the waitress seemed perplexed by the concept--this is a big no-no if you present yourself as a French restaurant. Since i had never eaten here before, i ordered the Duck confit. It was disappointingly undercooked. Service was a bit slow, on top of it. The profiterolles were just fine, however. This doesn't really warrant a second visit.

Excellent ambience, outstanding waitstaff, great wine selection

By JanKnee |

Everything but the food is outstanding. The food is underwhelming. Go for happy hour; go somewhere else for a meal.

Mussels were delicious!

By Shuhan C |

My boyfriend and I were in San Diego for a couple of days and decided to try this restaurant. We got mussels à la Crème d’Ail style. It was delicious! The mussels were big and plump and the sauce was to die for. The frites they gave with the mussels were alright. I used the complimentary bread to soak up all the sauce instead. For entrees I got the lamb dish. I liked the lamb, however, the merlot sauce was way overly salted. I tried to wipe some of the sauce off of the vegetables to try them but it was just too salty. My boyfriend liked his pork dish but he felt it was nothing special. We both loved the white chocolate ice cream with fresh berries though. I would go back just for the mussels again and try a different entree in hopes it would be better.. and less salty!

Ok Food....

By Nick L |

Ok food, turn off was the huge bug we found in our main dish. Restaurant was nice to take off the main and a dessert, but would have a hard time recommending the restaurant.

Great French Restaurant in Kensington..

By A. Vinnie V |

Bleu Boheme Restaurant is Great French Restaurant in the Kensington area of San Diego. Nice and welcome staff. Love the bread and butter. Nice bar to stop and have a drink and a bit to eat. Nice seat outside as well.

When can we go again?!?

By highdesertwanderer |

I loved this place. The food is delicious and amazing. The drinks are reasonably priced with a decent portion. One of my pet peeves is a martini served in a glass that is the size of a cordial, well this place gets it right. The serving size is reasonable and well made. Let me get back to raving about the food!! We were a group of 6, we had a bunch of stuff from the menu and all of it was excellent. All of us agreed that we needed to plan our next visit soon. Start with cocktails in the bar, then head to the dining room. Don’t be rushed, relax and enjoy the experience and the bread is awesome. I can’t wait to go again. As with all my reviews, if you liked it, please hook me up with a helpful vote!! If you have any questions, I am glad to answer them!

Would be romantic were it not so noisy

By Staidthere |

We were able to find a parking space only a block away, on time for our reservation at Bleu Boheme. We were given a lovely table by the windows. Almost all of the tables were occupied at 7:30 pm, and many of the wait staff were running. The bread and butter was very tasty. We shared confit of duck with pasta. An unusually large part of my wife's half of the confit was fat. The Brioche bread pudding was more dry and dense than we expected. My wife had a glass of sauterne that was sweet and just right for her. Our waitress was very helpful and enjoyable. We didn't see any children in the restaurant. The atmosphere seems romantic with candlelight on each table, offset by very loud background noise of diners' voices bouncing off the glass windows and hard stone walls. We felt the bill was competitive. Our total experience was between average and very good.

French favorite

By Fosterjlf |

The menu covers France fairly well. Mussels to beef bourgone. Wine list has some reasonable French wines. Food prepared well. Service knowledgeable and efficient.

Food + Ambience make a perfect night!

Forgot how good this restaurant was until I went back for Restaurant Week! Loved every course: French Onion Soup, beef dish and an unbelievable cheese cake. All...EXCELLENT!! And the restaurant is perfect....felt like a romantic French restaurant. Will definitely not wait a year to go back!

Even if you don't drink martinis like me - love this. Food is excellent, superb service! The bread! Goodness! We used to make a lot of these dishes now we just come here.

Good French Food Tucked Away in a Nice San Diego Neighborhood

By WCiardiello |

Bleu Boheme is in the Kensington neighborhood. We enjoyed outdoor seating on a quiet Sunday night. The server was charming and efficient and the food was very good. The onion soup was rich in cheese and onions and the mussels in cream garlic sauce was superb. I just wish they served the crusty bread In traditional white instead of whole wheat, as sopping up the broth would have tasted better. The Beef Bourgiugnon was well flavored and tender while the vegetables retained some of their crispness. The two-filet dish was perfectly executed with the beef cooked as filet mignon should be--neither under of overdone. Nice chocolate mousse to top it off. Great selection of beers.

Great food in a nice atmosphere

By Krivokrasov |

We had a very nice meal during our San Diego visit. My wife had the lamb chops and I had the Boeuf Bourguignon, and both were excellent. A very nice spot for a great meal!

A bit of a wait... but food was good.

By Mytravelbucket |

I was eager to visit the Bleu Boheme as it had been recommended several times to me. A few years ago I traveled to France and sampled excellent french food first hand. There is an expectation set for this restaurant as reservations are highly recommended to be made several weeks in advance. We made our reservations within a week and arrived right at opening. At 5:00pm there was a line of casually dressed patrons patiently waiting . Most went to the bar for Happy Hour. On the website the photos of the restaurant and interior give the impression of an elegant, small specialty place. I was surprised the hostess was dressed very very casual. But friendly. The interior although very quaint is on the rustic side. Table settings are nice with white tablecloths and candles. At our visit we were immediately shown to our table and then we waited. After ten minutes or so our waiter acknowledged us and took our order. We were hungry and so very happy the waiter had brought a freshly baked loaf of bread and creamy butter to enjoy with our glass of Merlot . The Boeuf Bourguignon is definitely reminiscent of Paris. Tender meat, vegetables and a rich sauce. The serving is large so we took some home. We also enjoyed the Salade Maison. Fresh, crisp butter leaf lettuce, beets, sliced almonds,a delicious vinaigrette and a tasty tapenade crouton. Our favorite entree was the Steak Frites, cooked medium well accompanied by shoe string fries. The restaurant has weekly specials and a great wine list. We sampled the Profiterole and Pain d’Epice. Both were perfect with the French Roast coffee.

You won't be blue if you dine at Boheme

Dine in for a special evening meal. The ambiance is yummy with dripping candlelight and tablecloths. It's cozy but hip, not stuffy. That being said, it isn't particularly quiet either because there are a lot of hard surfaces, brick walls, concrete floor etc. The outdoor seating is on busy Adams and a quieter side street. However, in the evening, the street isn't as busy as it might be during the day so if you're ok with a little traffic noise, go for street side seating. The menu says it changes weekly. It doesn't except for the specials so don't worry that you won't be able to try everything if you return frequently. They specialize in mussels which were very yummy. $25 served in a pretty large pot with a top to put the shells in and a generous serving of delicate pomme frites. They also provide a warm moist towel to clean your sticky mitts with when you're done. Nice touch. The basil martini, their specialty really is as good as they say. Fresh picked. Yum. A bit pricey but then most cocktails are over $10 these days no matter where you go. If you prefer wine, they have a nice selection. If you simply want to snack, they offer a good selection of fromage and charcuterie as well as small plates. We didn't even peruse the dessert menu but given the main menu, I imagine it's delectable. Expect to drop a few $$$ and enjoy your meal.

Almost perfect!

This was our third visit to the restaurant and it was just as good as our first two experiences. I did think the service was a bit slower than before, but maybe they had less staff than normal. We brought two people who had never been there before and they enjoyed their dinners as well. For appetizers, two in our party split a salad, I had the french onion soup, and my wife had the onion tart. For entrees, we had the chicken, pork ribeye, filet mignon, and the mussels. For dessert we had the profiteroles and the warm gingerbread. Everything was cooked perfectly. I do think that both of my choices could have benefited from a little more salt, but it was easily remedied at the table. Bleu Boheme is an excellent restaurant with excellent service. I do highly recommend making a reservation. Each time we have been there, it has gotten rather full.

I've been wanting to go here for a long time and my birthday was the perfect occasion. The ambiance is lovely, the wait staff helpful (and funny when my brother was being a wise guy) and the food well worth the price. My dinner companions ordered the mussels for an app and even though i don't eat mussels i tried one and thought they were awesome. the broth it was in had us all dipping our bread into it to sop up every bit. We also had a tart app with carmelized onion and we knew we were in for a great meal to follow. the waiter made fine recommendations to go with our meals and everyone was very satisfied with their meals. I had the petite filet with two sauces - both so delicious. My husband had the beef bourgenion (not sure on spelling here) that was so large he took some to lunch today. One of our other guests had the halibut special and was just as pleased as the rest of us...i will definitely be going back here next time we decide to splurge...

Cute and Colorful Cuisine

While visiting friends in the area, they brought us for dinner on a Saturday night with reservations. The restaurant is located in a quaint section with other culinary choices. Parking was easily available in an adjacent parking lot and there was some seating outside and in front of the restaurant. We were seated in a section that appeared to be a recreation of a French chateau. The female server was excellent and offered prompt service. We were even offered the happy hour choice of a $30 prix frixe menu. Our friends opted for the option with choices of 3 course meal. My husband and I ordered a la carte and we ordered a bottle of red to share. The food was delicious but I found my Gnocchi a la Parisienne with bacon to be somewhat salty. My husband was somewhat disappointed with his Coquilles St. Jacques which was also pricey and small portions. The dessert was the best. All in all, we would definitely return and order different items off of the happy hour menu. The total for 4 was $230!

Good Eats!

We tried one item from each course, all were great! The gnocchi melts in your mouth! The salmon tartar was zesty and lemony flavor. The crepe with Nutella was the perfect end to the meal. They have heaters on the patio which helped when it got chilly out. It was also easy to find street parking.

You know the circle above you fill in where it says "Is this one of the best meals you've ever had in a restaurant?" I filled it in. Ken Irvine runs a great eatery. His food is amazing. The happy hour is awesome, The atmosphere is great. The staff is attentive, friendly and professional. They have an awesome menu and everything is perfect. This place wins award after award. The mussels are a house specialty and are included in everyone one of our orders. These guys know how to prepare meat in general! Beef, Duck, Chicken, Fish, Lamb. Definitely the favorite for my wife and I.

This is a big deal restaurant - with prices to match - but the food is incredible. I had the short ribs and they were cooked to perfection. Service is excellent and ambiance lovely and like most restaurants, not quiet. Not cheap either so read the menu right to left and watch your alcohol selections.

Reliable French bistro fare

By JimdagOG |

One of my top five favorites, Bleu Boheme delivers reliable French bistro fare that my entire family likes. The wait staff is knowledgeable, friendly, and responsive. Be sure to make reservations for dinner regardless of the day of the week. Unfortunately, Bleu Boheme is no longer open for lunch (try Cafe Bleu in Mission Hills as an alternative). The wine list is adequate, but I prefer to pay the corkage fee and bring my own, or score a nice bottle of bubbly or Pinot Noir across the street from Village Vino. Highly recommended.

Wonderful!

What can you say about this place other then..... It's great! Don't think you are going to walk out spending $20. It's spendy but very very good. Flavors of the food and wine selection to notch. Staff is on point!

Sophisticated French Experience

By Ken H |

This is a great special occasion restaurant that turns out excellent dishes of traditional French cuisine in a quiet, efficiently run setting. With the stone walls and dim lighting, the mood of Bleu Boheme is that of a country auberge. We started with the traditional French onion soup and an exceptionally delicate butternut squash soup. The crab cakes, served at room temperature on a bed of greens, were highly seasoned and dappled with a contrasting rémoulade. The mushroom raviolis, served on a bed of sautéd spinach, were more substantial than those served in a good Italian restaurant and the white wine sauce understated. The hearty whole grain bread that came with the entree was unlike any bread available in American supermarkets--heavenly! The service here is most attentive without being intrusive in any way.
