We went with another couple 6 weeks ago. The perfect place for a meat eater with a love of german beers. We are older than the yuppie crowd that gathers there on a Saturday night. We were seated in the tightest and darkest corner- unable to see our menu let alone our dishes. Everything we had initially was delicious. Our mains arrived- the men had pork, I had duck and the other member of our group had steak. She had never eaten duck before, I was eating duck as a last trial since lately I had been disappointed with that order but thought I would give it a trial. At some point I realized that our plates had been given to us incorrectly and I was eating the steak and she was eating duck. I was outraged since, as an allergist, food mistakes can be fatal to my patients. She was mortified since she never had had, nor wanted to try duck. When it was brought to our waiters attention he was cavalier and insisted it was our mistake for not having noticed it sooner. Even when I called and spoke with the owner I was disappointed with his response. A word to the wise is that in Chicago places come and go and that the more customer friendly you are, the longer you will be in business. The food is great- the approach to a problem is critical and you failed on this account.

Echo the raves about the food—everything we had was wonderful—all meat cooked to order, sides delicious, especially the beignets. Our table had the duck, pork chop and hangar steak, and all were outstanding. Our server was competent, if not particularly warm. One manager graciously turned down the music which was deafening at one point. The hosting staff was downright rude. Two of the four of us arrived for a 5:45 reservation. Restaurant had only one table (of 20+) already seated, and they initially told us we’d have to wait for the rest of our party at the bar. We politely asked to be seated at the table—we knew the other members of our party were parking—and were kept waiting another 10 minutes while one host asked her “manager” whether she could make an exception to their seating-only-complete-parties rule. The “manager” agreed only after quizzing us as to how long it would take our friends to park. Oh, my. It just wasn’t a welcoming experience. When you are charging premium prices and the food is so good, you owe it to your customers to have top-notch servers and hosts.

From getting seated promptly to when we left, it was a great experience. Even though we did have some trouble understanding our waiter (I think he was French), he did try hard and had a lot of patience when we asked him to repeat things. The meal was fabulous and we did not have to wait for it to appear. All in all, a great time.

Taken here for lunch by Customer small hole in the wall but great food Oysters to start and a great pork sandwich to follow would definitely go back.

Great food. Great staff. Wonderful suggestions from bar and waitstaff for drinks and food. Had a great night. Everyone was top notch. Would give more than 5 stars if possible

I came here to be impressed and this place left me with just that feeling. The service, ambiance, and the BURGER just simply blew me away. I ordered ginger beer and the classic burger. Medium. The meat was 80/20 with the perfect taste one can imagine of fine pieces of tender and fatty juicy parts mixed up and perfectly minced up and made into the most adorable and fattest patty one can imagine. This heavenly piece of meat rested between two soft buttery buns slightly charred to perfection and throw in between were some tender pickles, succulent greens, slightly melted cheese from Wisconsin and of course house made aioli - one bite and I was in another zone of ecstasy. Remarkable juices oozed out from my first bite, and washing it down with my ginger beer all while stuffing my fat face with some beef fat fried fries ---- oh lord have mercy. I normally am not weak in my knees unless it's my moms biryani, but hot damn this burger got me weak. Oh man how can I judge another burger fairly anymore after biting into the most amazing burger in Chicagoland?

I am quite often a single diner and tend to select the bar for dinner. I like the bar for conversation and generally great bar staff service. The bar staff did not disappoint. The hostess though did. There was one person at the bar, seated at the first seat. No other seats at the bar were taken. I was seated directly next to the first diner at the next open seat working from the front of the bar to the back. Subsequent guests were seated to the right of me. In order. This was described to me as the hostesses "system" for seating. I asked to move a couple places (I'm left handed - I would have spent the next hour jabbing the person to my left as I ate given the tight seating). I was reseated after asking for a different seat but it seemed plain that the hostess wasn't warm to the idea. Weird. Having seating hassles is not the way you introduce someone to a new restaurant. Anyway, the food was excellent. The polenta with a tapenade of escargot was creamy and rich. The snails were chopped and I would have liked more of them. I ran out of snail tapenade half way through. The 35 day dry aged rib eye was excellent. Intensely beefy. Worth the seating nonsense just for the steak. I asked for bearnaise sauce on the side, which was thick to the point of being akin to a stiff mayo consistency as opposed to a sauce. It was tasty though. Given the steaks deep beef flavor, ultimately it was really unnecessary. Bar service was attentive and friendly. The other guests who dined at the bar with me, given the close seating and all - were also keen to talk to you and made the evening that much more enjoyable.

I know Chicago probably doesn't need a new steak place but Boeufhaus is in my neighborhood, and it's fantastic. A dear friend and I went there on a Friday night and the service and food were fantastic. We split the short rib beignets, a 65 day dry aged ribeye, cauliflower gratin and pot de creme for dessert. Everything was delicious. It is a little pricey for the neighborhood but worth it. I will definitely go back.

Nice place with energetic and warm atmosphere. Cocktails starters and appetizers were tasty! Steak was just ok in my book. My wife felt the same about hers. Just lacking and a bit overpriced. The desserts were good.

Great Restaurant, Great Service, Great Food! Our waiter Brad was a pro in helping us select our choices. The ambience is very boutique like , the food was outstanding and would highly recommend this neighborhood gem.

Vintage abattoir meats modern dark ambience. Dropped in during happy hour and was not disappointed. Kitchen in full view.

We met Brian, the main Chef and owner... he couldn't have been more open and generous with his time and information 100% recommended..!!

I had dinner at Boeufhaus a few weeks ago with friends and had an outstanding meal. The dining room is small (intimate actually) with maybe 40-50 seats plus a short bar. I had called for a reservation earlier that evening for a 9pm table, and they were able to fit us in. The staff was very friendly and helpful with recommendations, service was efficient, and the menu and wine list are exactly what I prefer for an enjoyable evening meal. The 3 of us decided to share our dishes, and had a few appetizers and a big steak with side dishes as our main course. The focus is on quality meats, and they dry-age their own beef on premise as well as butcher whole animals (the space was formerly a deli/meat shop).

Relaxed but sophisticated feel with very friendly staff. We started with oysters consisting of east and west coast varieties that were expertly prepared . Our group mostly had specials such as the pork chop that was interestingly prepared with farro and apricot; great combo of sweet and toothy crunch. The filet was to die for and was reported as being "melt in your mouth". Please do yourself a favor and order the coffee with the oatmeal cookie dessert. We will happily return.

Chicago is a steakhouse kind of town. If you can't find a four-star steakhouse to satisfy your appetite, you aren't paying attention. One of the best, if not the best, is Boeufhaus. Located at 1012 North Western Avenue in the West Town neighborhood, on the border between Ukrainian Village and Humboldt Park, it is a rarity, a French and German inspired brasserie run by two Irish chefs, Brian Ahern and Jamie Finnegan. Since they opened in 2015, they have accumulated a large gathering of loyal customers. Open from 3:30 to 10 on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, 11 to 3 and 3:30 to 11 on Friday and Saturday and 3:30 to 9 on Sunday, it offers what every steak lover can appreciate. My wife started with escargot, chose seared halibut with caviar and carrots for her entree and finished with apple crumble with caramel, toasted oat and Calvados ice cream. I started with shrimp cocktail, indulged in a 14-ounce New York strip steak with roasted mushrooms for my entree and opted for chocolate roulade with peanut butter, hot fudge, black tea cream and brittle for my dessert. Yes, this beef house is one of the best in town.

Our Chicago getaway experience was highlighted by our dinner enjoyed at the Boeufhaus. Usually I cannot drink wine due to headaches and I have an allergy to onions. One word to the waiter and my dinner was tailor made for me. The food was fresh, interestingly prepared and unusually delicious. Appetizers of East and West coast fresh oysters, miniature gruyere cheese puffs, crudite, fried perch, and scallop brandade rounded our meal starters. Carefully chosen wine selections from Red and White Wines, Chicago complemented our dining experience. The mixologist prepared delicious made-to-order cocktails. Our main course was a 55 day dry aged strip steak perfectly prepared including sides of Boeuf Frites, mushrooms, and asparagus. For dessert we shared Chocolate bavarois and Brandy Alexanders. The finest service and food that I have enjoyed, ever. Compliments to Chef/Owners Brian Sheen and Jamie Finnigan.

Christmas Lunch was wonderful! Had the aged ribeye, tartare, beignets, French onion soup, and more. Chocolate mousse was super delicious for dessert. The white wine was incredible. Will definitely eat there again for special occasions.

Dinner was a disappointment: in a word, stingy. We were so impressed by our first dinner over a year ago that we expected great things on our return trip. This time, we had the fried perch “starter”. It turned out to be 4 deep-fried morsels of breaded fish on a bed of pureed sauerkraut with crème fraiche. Very tasty but tiny for $10. We also had the “market salad”, chopped and roasted winter veggies and fruits with some cheese. Again, quite good but, at $14, not much on the plate. We proceeded to the 22oz. 55-day aged ribeye. It had great flavor and was sufficient for 2 to share but was gristly. The béarnaise sauce came in a tiny dish and disappeared before the meat was consumed. The boeuf- fat fries were delish with their own creamy sauce in a container for dipping. I had the Haus Smash cocktail, a variation on a mint julep, which was good and, at $11, quite reasonable. Lunch 2 weeks later was far more satisfying. He wanted pastrami but with the Reuben sandwich accoutrements. The kitchen accommodated him and he was in heaven. It came with thin house-made potato chips rather than fries. They were excellent. I had the Haus Burger which came with the boeuf-fat fries alongside. The sesame seed bun was a bit too large for the pattie but it was served medium rare and was very good with cheese, frisee, some onions and pickle chips. Portions were large. Service at both dinner and lunch was prompt and cordial. It’s a small and popular restaurant. At dinnertime, they want you to order, eat and leave so they can seat another party. At lunch, you can just drop in and get a table and there’s no pressure to vacate your seat. Parking was quite difficult to find in the evening; we had to circle around several times before finding a spot a couple blocks north on Western Ave (the side streets are all permit parking). Lunchtime on a weekday was different; we saw several spots within a block or so.

We had secured a weekend dinner reservation; we had read about the 55-day aged ribeye steak; we had been looking forward to this night out and we were not going to be deterred by a 4-to-8-inch snowstorm. We made it and were not disappointed. We started with the short rib beignets, shredded short rib meat encased in a thin layer of deep-fried dough. 5 of them, golf-ball size, come in a bowl with a dipping sauce that defines the term "umami". We also had a "market salad" which on this winter night consisted of cooked and raw winter vegetables and hazelnuts diced small in what may have been a buttermilk dressing. It was tasty and unusual. Then the main event, the 22-oz. ribeye, perfectly medium-rare, served sliced on a plate along with the bone. You get a choice of sauce; we ordered the Bordelaise and it came smeared on the plate alongside the meat. For sides, we ordered the boeuf fat fries (de rigeur altho there are other choices) and a medley of roasted mushrooms. With it, a nicely dry French pinot noir from the Touraine region. Great meal. There was not a morsel left on our plates at the end. Sadly, we did not have room for dessert. My only criticism is that all the dishes were highly salted. At 7:30, the restaurant was mostly full, tho there were a few seats left at the bar and it wasn't terribly loud. An hour later, it was full, knots of people were waiting by the door and it got very noisy. Because it's a small restaurant and popular, you are not encouraged to linger. Service was cordial: we were greeted warmly, our coats were taken to be hung up, thanked for venturing out in the storm and our waiter, besides answering all our questions, checked on us frequently to make sure we were satisfied.

Visiting Chicago this past fall, I stumbled upon this place and what a treat it was for lunch. The menu is simple and you basically want to order everything on it. The food was amazing! I had a salad to start that was almost too pretty to eat. My main dish was a sausage dish. Wow! is all I can say, fresh, seasoned to perfection and filling. Our server was great, did not hover over us for too long and gave great suggestions. Will definitely come back to try the dinner menu.

The thing about Chicago is you never run out of good restaurants, no matter what your taste, from sushi to hot dogs to pizza to seafood to steaks. There are many quality steakhouses in Chicago, some of the best in the country, and Boeufhaus at 1012 North Western Avenue is one of the newest and bidding to claim a spot among the best. Open since April, co-owners Brian Ahern and Jamie Finnegan are trying to set a new standard...only 34 seats, no crabcakes, no Caesar salad, no shrimp cocktail, no chicken Vesuvio, no cherry wood, They describe their new venture as a "French and German brasserie." Boeufhaus stands on the eastern edge of Humboldt Park in what once was a Polish butcher shop, across busy Western Avenue from Ukrainian Village. Unique? Five of seven entrees on the menu consist of slab beef seared in a cast iron pan. There were some early blips and bumps and bruises, even some torching reviews, which can be expected, but Ahern and Finnegan seem to be ironing out the wrinkles. My wife and I gave them a few months to get in shape before checking it out. We were impressed with the nuances of the menu and the quality and presentation of the food. We were informed that the wine list is epic but we're not wine-drinkers. For starters, the shortrib beignets and pastrami croquettes and Fleischschnacka (pork sausage) provided a new and tantalizing taste treat. Also loved the Tartare of Boeuf and citrus salmon appetizers. I had to sample the signature item on the menu, the 22-ounce, 55-day dry-aged bone-in ribeye, a one-pound, six-ounce masterpiece costing $60. My wife settled for the 10-ounce filet mignon. I'm reliably told that the 16-ounce New York strip, seared halibut, duck breast and Lardo wrapped veal loin also are excellent choices. In a metropolis where there are dueling steakhouse in every neighborhood, Boeufhaus is trying to find its niche. It certainly is off to a good start.

Four of us went to Boeufhaus to celebrate a birthday. At least three people greeted the birthday boy quite warmly. Off to a good start. Service was also quite good overall. However, our initial expectations were not met. Most steaks are really offered for sharing. My wife and I decided on a steak that was $106 and even though it tasted good, it was gristly and sinewy. Not an easy chew. Quite disappointing. Regardless, the real problem was with the final check. From my calculations we were overcharged by $9 and so I contacted the restaurant by phone and left a message. The Manager contacted me by email. However, after several email exchanges that were unsatisfying, the Manager finally called me. When I first contacted the Manager I thought I was taxed twice but that was incorrect. My error. But when I asked her as to why my service fee was $9 higher than I thought it should be, I was cut off. The Manager would not even discuss this perceived overcharge. When I did my own calculations on the bill, I totaled the food and drink, then multiplied that number by the 22% Service Fee, and then added in the 10.75% sales tax . This is the “normal” way charges are determined. As a result, my total was exactly ($9) cheaper than their total. Something was “off”. Not a real big deal, but the fact that she refused to discuss how they were $9 higher than my calculations, was galling. It was a simple request, phrased politely but receiving only a thank you for contacting them. Why would they blow me off? When all is said and done, there are many more superior steak places in Chicago, and with more reasonable and clear-cut service charges/fees.

This place is absurdly good. I come every chance I get for lunch, which is only a few dollars more than your average mid-level sandwich in chicago. When I take people there I ask them if they would like to have the best cheesesteak sandwich of their lives and so far no one has argued with me. They have a litlte butcher section upfront now so you can take some equally insanely good pastrami home with you.

OMG. Get here quick. This small, cool restaurant in an up and coming Chicago restaurant is not necessarily the spot you would expect to find an amazing steak, but it is. My boyfriend and I shared a 22 ounce 55 day dry aged steak. Absolutely succulent. With the special combination of three sides for $18 (cauliflower au gratin, duck fat fries and mushrooms), it was more than enough food for the both of us. I can still taste the amazing food and can't wait to go back. Service was exceptional too. Only one minor complaints. The loud music. Why? I suppose it is meant to go with the hip vibe and the young crowd.

If steak is what you were looking for, this would be a good place to visit. We had the 55-day aged ribeye steak plus a non-aged New York strip. Overall, we thought the New York strip tasted better, both in flavor and texture. We had the veal sweet bread which was a tad overcooked and the beef tartar which was good, as appetizers. The sides asparagus, mushrooms and fries were good. The rhubarb crumble dessert and the coffee was very good.

I love to try new places especially when I hear good things from friends. I decided to check out the new Boeufhaus on the Northwest side of Chicago. I went with 6 business associates and each had something different. I started with appetizers, short rib bignets, and country pate with sourdough bread. There are five bignets in the appetizer with a small dipping sauce. These were absolutely addictive. No one wanted to share and everyone want to eat them all. Our guests ordered, the Boeufhaus burger, corned beef sandwich, brisket sandwich and steak salad. Some ordered house made fries or chips. We were very delighted by each of the sandwiches we ordered. The steak salad was excellent. One of the best I've ever had. The chef truly is a master cooking meat. My steak, ordered medium rare, was seared on the outside and perfectly red-pink on the inside. Bravo. All of our guests were very vocal that we should make a trip back. My one suggestion to the restaurant is to add a dessert menu. You have an incredible wine, cocktail and coffee list that could easily be paired with a lovely, chocolate dessert.

Truth be told, I flew to Chicago just for the ribeye steak...and it was worth every penny! It most certainly is the best steak I've had to date! It was a wonderful dining experience😊

We booked Boeufhaus on our trip to Chicago as it had come highly recommended to us. Unfortunately it did not live up to its hype. The music was so loud it made it very difficult to talk and was pretty annoying at times. Crank the volume down a little and the experience could have been so much better. The wine list was pretty useless as most of the wines we requested were out of stock. Rather than tell us what they didn't have, I'd have preferred a shorter list telling us what they did have. Nice steak but very expensive for what we got, particularly given the noise and the poor wine choice. We left feeling very underwhelmed which is a shame as we had been so much looking forward to it.

Very good restaurant, very pleasant. Food is very good but a little expensive. Service is excellent. Food menu and wine menu are original and diverse.

A small unassuming west side restaurant on busy Western Ave that serves amazing beef. We came for lunch and were not dissapointed. We started with half a dozen oysters, which were quite nice. The burger was so rich and juicy as befitting a steakhouse and the beef fat fries that accompanied it was icing on the cake. I had the beef on weck which had the most tender, melt in your mouth beef. It comes with house made chips which were hin and crisp. The lunch deal allowed me to add a beer to my sandwich for a nominal cost. We were too full for dessert. The atmosphere was quiet and relaxed as we were having a late lunch. There are a few outdoor tables on the sidewalk screened from the traffic by some bushes. The dinner menu and specials on the board looked great and the bar is quite attractive with the old wooden doors to the refrigerator. Would definitely return.

Wonderful experience here for first-time visitors to Chicago. Worth the trip out of the downtown area. Had a reservation but chose to sit at the bar instead. Don't regret that. You meet more of the staff (in addition to the owner) that way.

I went there with my boss and 2 colleagues in a business trip. We were very hungry and took the 55 days beef piece that was amazing, after a nice starter similar to a French tartare with some kind of balsamic sauce. The ale beer was a good choice and my boss seemed happy with his wine. they were able to satisfy one of my colleague with gluten allergy so everybody really enjoyed this dinner in this small restaurant of Ukrainian village of Chicago. Only inconvenient is the noisy atmosphere but this is common when people start to drink too much and speak loud... Not ideal for a romantic dinner.

The 55 day aged ribeye was exceptional. Service takes the extra step to make sure you enjoy the experience.

A small gem right on Western Ave. I have been here several times now and the food never disappoints. The steaks are great and the sides are always interesting and tasty. A real upgrade for the neighborhood dining scene.

In a competitive market like Chicago, every restauranteur is looking for a gimmick to lure customers, a difference-maker in the kitchen or on the menu that turns hamburger into filet mignon. Welcome to Boeufhaus. As in "beef house." Located at 1012 North Western Avenue, in West Town, in Ukrainian Village and Humboldt Park, north of Augusta Boulevard, Boeufhaus offers classic chops with German-leaning dishes and sides in a sleek exposed brick brasserie setting. It's a steakhouse with a German slant, a French and German inspired brasserie. Opened in 2015, it has rapidly established a reputation as one of the leading upscale restaurants in Chicago. We understand why. It is open from 11 to 10 Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, 11 to 12 on Friday and Saturday and 5:30 to 10 on Sunday. My wife and I decided to sample the lunch menu. How's this for lunch? Shortrib beignets with braised rib and natural jus, green salad with house greens, fine herbs, parmigiano reggiano and onion vinaigrette, French onion gratinee with sourdough and gruyere, 14-ounce New York strip with bearnaise sauce and roasted mushrooms, duck breast with beet, blood orange, dark chocolate, charred cabbage and spinach and apple Napoleon. Did someone confuse the lunch menu with the dinner menu? No, it's just the way they do things at Boeufhaus. With a lot of class and pizzazz.

Great service, spectacular steak. The short rib beignets were so so good. The actual steak was so tasty. Would highly recommend

In the western side of the city, but still very accessible from the Magnificent Mile by car service or taxi and worth the trip. Although it's main draw is the beef, there are many other choices on the menu. But the beef is some of the best ever! The seafood lover in our group had the bouillabaisse , and the beef eaters had the steak frites. All voted that their meal was terrific. The coconut panne cotta as a shared dessert was light and refreshing.

Amazing flavors. We enjoyed the lunch special of a sandwich and beer for$15 and it comes with homemade fries! We agreed on the steak tartare appetizer so fresh perfectly seasoned. The services was timely and attentive. Great relaxing atmosphere.

You know they're serious about their beef when they have glass display cabinet of fresh meat in the entry to the restaurant! A warm and inviting space with exposed brick and wood floors. Nice bar in the back of the restaurant. I started with the Charcuterie Board and it was almost a meal in itself. Absolutely delicious cured meats, pates and sausages.I had the 35 day aged Rib Eye and it was a perfect MR and juicy and full of flavor. The roasted mushrooms were a perfect side dish. The wine list was quite good and the service was excellent. This is such a warm and comforting place with really fabulous food. I can't wait for my next visit

A small and intimate place but the taste of the aged ribeye is larger than life. Atmosphere is very quaint and warm. Very lively place playing great tunes. The aged ribeye steak paired with a Japanese scotch was a great end to my evening.

I came here with my boyfriend for his birthday and we had an outstanding meal. First of all, the service could not have been better. The hostess was very nice and continued to be attentive throughout the night. Our waitress Christina was very knowledgeable and clearly had a passion for the restaurant and the food. Upon sitting down at a cozy candlelit table, we were given rye pretzels with mustard butter- compliments of the chef. Christina walked us through the specials and gave great recommendations. We ordered short rib beignets as an appetizer, the 30oz bone in porterhouse to split as well as 3 sides- boeuf fat fries, spiced carrots, and sauerkraut spaetzle. Everything was cooked perfectly and tasted extremely rich and flavorful. Definitely one of the best steaks we've ever had! The whole meal was complemented by a smooth and delicious Pinot Noir from Denmark (we were intrigued by the Danish origin). And at the end of the night we realized that the two couples next to us were also celebrating birthdays and shared a toast. It was an all around wonderful experience. The taste and quality of food (also integrity of farm to table), great service, and atmosphere make the cost 100% worth it. We will definitely be returning!

Great place for steaks out of the beaten path. It is a gem with great prices for top notch steaks, does not mean inexpensive, but fair. They have their one batch of whiskey, try the old fashioned.

Chicago is filled with steak places and most are excellent but tend to be large and filled with tourists and convention visitors. Boeufhaus is located in up and coming neighborhood (please get out of the Gold Coast via taxi or Uber) that offers simple menu perfectly executed with a light German twist. Service also very attentive. Prices are very reasonable (for a steakhouse). Don't miss on their mini French Onion soup. Perfect for just a taste (might be off menu item).

Many visits, food is superb. Steak is high quality and prepared superbly. Best steakhouse in Chicago. Short rib beignets are a must have. Wonderful, bargain lunch menu. Fantastic small butchers counter during the day. Small but very attractive room. Wine list is odley out of sync with the food. To many trendy "natural wines" not enough inexpensive rustic reds.

Located in an area that is beginning to significantly refresh, this restaurant is worth the trip. We shared two appetizers; Early spring vegetables, house greens, root vinaigrette and the CECI BEAN CAVATELLI. The greens were as if they had just been harvested from the backyard garden and the cavatelli was exquisite, bursting with flavor. We mentioned we were planning to order filet mignon. Boeufhaus' wine expert, Nathan, explained the wine list and recommended the perfect choice. Truly, perfect. Nathan owns Red and White wine shop in Logan's Square. Can you ask for a better sommelier? I think not. Boeufhaus butchers it's own beef and is dedicated to using "responsibly raised animals, and artisanal house-made products in our seasonally-evolving menu." It is a very small place, so reservations are strongly recommended.

We did not know what to expect, but were blown away by the dishes we had here. It was an exquisite presentation and the food was “to die for”! This would be a great celebration restaurant. It is a little more pricey than most, but well worth it. Our waitress took the time to guide us with ordering dishes to share and we could not stop talking about how GOOD the food was!

At last, I made it to Boefuhaus, we were blown away with the quality and creativity of the dishes. The servers could not make it any more pleasant, great team work and energy. Though it is a bit loud, however non of that mattered since the food drinks dessert and service were fanblodytastic!

I would cone here again! Trekking through the snow to get here, I was surprised they were open. I’m glad they were because the food was delicious! Be prepared to spend at least $30 or more for a meal and you will not be disappointed. I had the scallops, duck fat fries, and beef filled beignets- the beignets are a must! I also had the War Pig Foggy Geezer beer — one of the best beers I’ve ever had — over 8% alcohol, so you’ll only need one. The atmosphere and service were great. It had a bar area and probably around ten table. I recommend making a reservation. The restaurant was recommended to us and it still had a nice crowd building despite the snow storm. There’s street parking and the restaurant is handicap accessible. It’s also conveniently located. I was staying off the Red line on Grand and I got there by taking 2 buses, and was dropped off just across the street from the restaurant. I also took the bus back to the hotel by myself around 9 PM and felt safe doing so. You’ll like the experience. It’s German inspired with French infused. Don’t expect typical German dishes because you’ll be disappointed. This is fine dining with a French flare to the dishes. And you’ll love every bite.

Excellent well-paced and perfectly prepared meal. My New York Strip hot medium rare on the spot and the mushroom side was excellent as well. Probably could have gone without the fries. They were....ok. However, you are doing yourself a disservice if you don’t get the short rib beignets as an appetizer. Outstanding. The menu is reasonably priced for the quality. Great steak in a steak town.

Such a beautifully balanced menu. The quality of ingredients shines. The wine list is epic. I just wish this was in Sydney. Apart from the signature steak the freshness and vibrancy of other dishes is fantastic. Go here. Be happy.

The best restaurant in Chicago I have ever been to! This new restaurant has a wonderful decor incorporating the old and the new. The food was absolutely wonderful! I love that the owners and chef were so visible and interacting with all the customers. The spring salad had a lovely light dressing with its beautiful presentation! The short ribs beignets were so tender and tasty! I had the filet mignon that just melted in my mouth. My husband had the 55 day dry aged ribeye- such generous portion with great flavor. We ordered the cauliflower gratin with leek gruyere in a bechamel was light and tasty. One flavor complemented the other. Will definitely go back every time I am in Chicago. Service was great, a team effort

My 4 kids took me to Boeufhaus for dinner two week ago. It was wonderful; best steak I have ever had. Great food excellent service. A bitt pricy.

Located several blocks south of Division on Western, the Boeufhaus appears to be at the vanguard of a gentrification of the neighborhood. Although the Amish Organic food store is across the street, much of the area retains the remnants rundown. Not surprisingly, the patrons that populate this limited menu establishment are not local but are adventurous souls looking for the next hotspot. We had their hamburger and cheesteaks as well as their shortrib beignets. The first two were excellent but the third was just OK. Service was efficent although they forgot our appetizers (we also ordered oysters) but they made up for it by not charging us for the beignets. The decor is rustic and they sell lmeat at the front of the restaurant.

Visited on a Wednesday night after dark. The food was outstanding (do the 55 day dry aged and thank me later) and the bartender was on point with attentiveness and great suggestions. The tartare was also excellent. That said - if you’re not from Chicago (and I’m not) - be prepared for an “interesting” experience when trying to find, park, and walk to the restaurant. There is no lettered sign...just a dark sign with a stick figure cow on it. It’s hard to see at night so you have to look carefully. Took me twice around the block to spot it. There is only public on street parking available. The evening I went I had to park 7 blocks away. Keep your head on a swivel as you walk as the area is “rough” (and I’m being extremely conservative saying that). As I was walking back to my car I noticed TONS of broken glass on the sidewalk next to each car. No doubt this is a high smash and grab area. Glad I had the experience of the outstanding food and service but wish this place was in a better part of town.

Yes, the food was pretty good, but at $150 per person I had expected much better than pretty good. The wine list has nothing under $100 by the time you add tax and service. The beignets had barely any meat, the pate was great, but the toast oily. We ordered three steaks: medium rare, medium, and medium well. But they came out all the same. Because they slice your steak up before serving it, there is no sending it back to fix it. Most irritating was the fact that they brought out the main course immediately after clearing the appetizers. That’s great for fast-food, but not for an expensive dining experience.

We dined on Saturday and were very excited. We began with oysters and cocktails. My martini was not cold enough. We ordered steak frite medium rare and it arrived rare to raw. I sent it back and the new order was also raw. We ordered a nice glass of Bordeaux for 15 dollars per glass and asked the bartender about the short pour and he answered that all glasses are 5 ounces. Very nice place but next time will order a sandwich.

I was in town for Coyotes game against Blackhawks and this place came recommended by marketing person at United Center. This old historical building housed an original meat locker for slabs of beef and the current owners have not lost that long lost art of aging. I had the Rib Eye with au poive’ (?) sauce and just a couple slices of garlic bread,... The steak flavor and texture was awesome! The steak took me back to old school flavor and memories. Have a cocktail before, classic pours SERVED here! ENJOY!!

A very nice restaurant with excellent Service and very good food. I haven’t eaten this delicious meat in a long time - highly recommended.

Just because you wish to be a fancy eatery, does not make it so. This 35 seats place has delusions of grandeur. If your group is big, they require that everyone order their tasting menu at $75.00 apiece (food cost only). The food came and the majority of the 5 courses tasted average and uninspired. The staff ‘s attitude has a haughtiness that makes the worst nose-in-the-air cartoon French waiter look like an amateur. O yeah, they did mention that they are awaiting a fine review by the Michelin folks, right! To be fair though, their beef is of high quality and cooked to the proper doneness. However, there are way too many more honestly priced eateries that offer good, unpretentious food around them to warrant a re-visit to this joint.

Got to say this place has the BEST steaks I've ever had. A wonderful independently owned and dedicated to the finest steaks you can find - not cheap but well worth the price (they also have fantastic lunch sandwiches)

Very small dining room, but great - and I mean great - food. Good beer selection, very knowledgeable sommelier and a pretty extensive wine list. Four of us each had a different cut of meat and they were all tender and tasty. Oysters were fresh, short rib beignets were tasty. I highly recommend, although beware of the prices. Great for a special occasion or if you just want a great steak!

Had an altogether bad experience at Boefhaus - the House of Bad Attitude! From the moment we entered Boeufhaus, we were made to feel unwelcome. We arrived early in the evening and while there was only one occupied table in the restaurant, we were seated in the front area of the restaurant, a rather chilly space, near the door, and facing an empty meat cooler. This would not have been so bad were it not the same space where the employees congregated, chatting loudly enough to interrupt the conversation we were having at our table. We asked the hostess, if there was perhaps another table in the restaurant we could occupy - seeing as it was very early in the evening, and there was only one other table seated in the restaurant. After much hemming and hawing we were told that due to reservations - every other table in the restaurant was already assigned - the only table available was the one where we were seated. Perhaps, but we also got the feeling that she just could not be bothered. And so, we sat there, figuring we would deal with it, as several employees continued to talk, yuk it up, and lurch over us. A few moments later - a couple - holding a reservation - arrived and were seated at a table next to us - about a foot away. Seeing the entire restaurant empty, the couple immediately expressed discomfort - as did we. Two tables occupied in the entire restaurant - and the hosting staff pins this couple - with a reservation - between a wall and an occupied table. I walked to the door, where three employees were lounging around on the counter, and inquired why this was the case. Before I could even explain the discomfort of the situation, a host, different from the person we had dealt with before, held up a chart of the restaurant and said we've already assigned every table - and refused to address the matter further. Boo Bouefhaus Boo! Who cares about the food, when the guest experience is this poor. Not Recommended!

OMG. OMG omg omg. The New York Times ran a seemingly out-of-place review of this seemingly out-of-place restaurant in (of all places) Ukrainian Village. Reservations in hand, off we went (über-ing) to Boeufhaus from our hotel on the river. What a fantastic meal! The seating is a bit tight, but good enough. The staff was great -- with both honestly helpful suggestions from the menu and and unblinking willingness to move us a tale over when, next to us, sat a diner seemingly effusing cigarette-smoke (from his clothes? his skin?). But the meal... We shared a belly clam salad from the specials menu. Dinner was the 35-day dry-aged ribeye (if you love beef, I don't think you've lived until you've tasted this) accompanied by roasted mushrooms (intense) and cici bean cavatelli (from the appetizers). Yes, one of the best meals that I've eaten. Eat here, quick, before you can't get in!

Everything from the beautiful crudité to the pear strudel was delicious. Perfectly cooked steak and great service. Can't wait to go back for lunch to try the beef on weck.

I had some Instagram friends in town from isreal for a food tour .So i picked boeufhaus for the first stop. Went with 3 items only because of eating at other spots . But could have had the whole menu. Great flavors on them all , so beefy taste #porkmafia inda house

A very small and somewhat noisey dining room but the great service and delicious food soon made us forget all about that We started with the short rib beignets which we thought were delicious with the very rich demo glacé for dipping. The escargot croquettes were a disappointment with hardly any escargot flavor but we ate them all. We added a salad which was more of a crudite with watermelon radishes, cauliflower. Pea pods and a soft egg ....very refreshing after two deep fried appetizers. We shared a 20 oz 60 day aged rib eye which isn't as big as you might think once you remove the bone and fat but certainly enough for us seniors! The younger guys next to us had no problem each devouring a whole steak themselves. The steak was the highlight of the meal, cooked perfectly and delicious. It didn't need the bearnaise sauce that came with it. We ended with baumkuchen for dessert...how often do you see baumkuchen on the menu? We enjoyed it with a cup of tea and left very contented. The menu had a great variety of items that I'd like to come back to try. Once again the waitstaff was extremely professional and efficient

This restaurant is very small, but does have a nice bar. I was there with a girlfriend for lunch. The lunch and dinner menus are very different in terms of selections and price. What takes away from the ambiance is that there is an empty meat case at the front of the place. I asked the waiter about that and he said that at some point there are plans to sell meats. The short rib beignets are a great start. The reuben was very good. My friend had the steak frites which she found to be very good as well. The service was excellent. Our server was very attentive. When you make a reservation you are required to submit credit card info. They do state that for parties of 1- 3 you might be seated at the bar for lunch/dinner when you arrive. For lunch I would not consider this that much of an issue, but when the prices for dinner are so high and you are not expecting to sit at the bar, this could be a turnoff.

There were four of us here on a Friday night. We got seated right away for our 6:15 reservation. Server was very friendly. Rib beignets, salad market, and fries were good starters. Two of us split the delicious rib eye steak. All was good.

The food is good and the location is convenient to me…but it’s not downtown and they should not charge downtown prices. But what made the experience the worst was getting the stink eye from the hostess because we were there for close to their “time-limit”. I’m sorry, if you charge that much for a place on Western Ave., you shouldn’t have a seating time limit. For the price, I rather go to RPM.

The food here is excellent. If you want to splurge, the 55 day aged ribeye is awesome, but pricey (more than a dollar per day!). The short rib beignets are awesome. The snails appetizer. which had been highly recommended, was the only miss. Attentive, but not overly so, service. Decent wine selection--could have a few more at the lower end. Warning. They have a French idea of rare-ness. The attached photo is of lamb chops ordered medium rare.

Extremely friendly and professional staff, and very patient with questions regarding the menu. I liked the ambience of the place....kind of hip and intimate with a "locals joint" feel to it. M wife and I each had the 55 day aged ribeye which was fantastic but in retrospect we should have shared just one entree.....way too much food. Not cheap as far as ribeye goes...with wine (glasses) our meal was about $370 including tip, and we were too full for dessert. I would recommend this place but unless you are absurdly hungry share the ribeye...

We dined at Boeufhaus to celebrate my daughter's 18th birthday. Two adults, two teenagers, it was amazing! Appetizers: oysters, lamb ravioli, steak salad - all delicious! I sopped up every bit of sauce from the ravioli after my daughter finished with it. Entrees: filet mignon, scallops, steak frites and a pork special, plus an order of cauliflower gratin to share. I ordered the scallops and if I could have licked the plate I would have, my meal was so delicious! Everyone else enjoyed their meals as well. Great service, tremendous food, I can't wait to return!

second time at this newer restaurant in the Ukrainian village on western in Chicago and I loved it the first time and loved it more last night! their food is special! started out with a little bubbly to cleanse the pallet with a selection of vegetables. onto a starter of short rib beignet and an octopus with lamp ragu (OMG)! then to French onion soup, one of the best I have ever had! onto a strip steak with burgundy wine sauce and the leek spaetzel OMG again! to top it off we had the chocolate pot de something. all brought home with a great French can blend! I will be back!

We had to try out this place as it kept coming up on the radar as a top steakhouse in Chicago. I made the mistake thinking it was in downtown but it turned out to be out in the Ukrainian village. Came up with the brilliant idea to take the bus out as I thought we could see some of the city. Hmmmmm. When getting off the bus I realized we were not in the best neighborhood and had a little bit of a scare. I recommend to drive net time. Nice thing is that they have street parking. Entrance reminds me of a little European butcher restaurant. Decor was rustic but nice. Tables small and close to each other. For starters we had steak tartare, charcuterie and sweetbread. Main courses we shared some of the bone in porterhouse and also had two regular steaks. Have to say the quality difference is night and day. The bone in steaks were probably the best steaks we have had in Chicagoland ever, but the regular steaks were a little bit boring. Sides were nice and delicious but the bone in steaks really took the price

I went here for lunch on the recommendation of a friend and really happy I did. After kind of an odd interaction with the hostess to start, I sat at the bar and was immediately treated like I was a long lost friend. I can't remember being made to feel as welcome in a restaurant as the bartender made me feel that day. Excellent service continued as he guided me through the menu and told me about a great lunch special where a draft beer is $2 with the purchase of a sandwich. I'll take that all day. Sandwich itself was really good. Roast Beef served on weck bread which I learned that day is short for Kimmelweck. It was served with house made potatoes chips. The sandwich and jus were great. The chips were okay. They had kind of an off taste to me that I can't quite describe. Old fryer oil, maybe? Decor is nice. Quintessential neighborhood restaurant. I will definitely be making a return restaurant.

Well , a outstanding meal was had . Put boeufhaus at the top of your next trip in chicago . Had great service , staff was very prompt. Chef is on his game . Let them know the #porkmafia sent ya. Killer stop

We happened upon this place completely by accident but everything about it knocked out socks off! From the short rib beignets (yes, you read that right) to the perfectly cooked and seasoned burger to the beautiful BLT to the milky mousse they had us oo'ing and ahhh'ing like we'd never eaten before in our lives. Best accident all day.

My son and I went for dinner on a Friday night and sat at the bar. It was about 1/2 to 2/3 full. The menu on their website listed old school, traditionally prepared sweetbreads, and that was what set Boeufhaus apart from the many other steakhouses. Apparently the chef had just changed the menu to introduce a more modern recipe. I asked our server if the chef could prepare the simpler recipe, and the response was a short "no", with no explanation as to why not (there could have been a legitimate reason). Sort of downhill from there. My son had the 55 day aged steak and I had the steak frites. Both were OK, but nothing to rave about given the price. Live hundreds of miles from Chicago and there for only 1 night, so regret not trying one of the other highly rated steakhouses. After all, when in Chicago ....

This is a fabulous restaurant that focuses on high quality meats and other accompanying dishes. They have their own butcher in house and cure their own charcuterie. This also makes it a standout. We sampled, family style, three steaks ranging from 35-45-55 days of dry aging, which is rare to experience all at once. You simply must get the Steak Tartar. It was the best I have ever experienced. Not cheap, but worth the money. Definitely call ahead for reservations!

I'm a steak addict and a ribeye connoisseur and Boeufhaus has just taught me how aged beef can be uniquely special. Tucked away off the beaten path of Chicagos main stays - this special place makes some very special flavors. Their steaks are not inexpensive but they are big enough to share. I've visited some the best steakhouses in Chicago and across the States and this one can compete with any of them. Do yourself a favor and give them a try.

I highly recommend this restaurant and will be returning on my next visit. All of the staff were friendly and knowledgeable and went out of their way to make sure we had the best dining experience. The food was exceptional. Try the sweetbreads, the dry age rib eye and the blueberry and white chocolate dessert. I cannot wait to return!
Remarkable cooking
We stumbled upon this inconspicuous place one, and then came back for a second visit because the food was so remarkable. It is high cuisine. very dish is prepared thoughtfully and with imagination, to bring out the flavor and create interesting combinations. Their beef tartar is delicious. We've tried about 6 different small plates, and everything was excellent. It's also a nice stylish atmosphere, perfect for a date. They also have interesting cocktails. It's expensive.
