Great drinks and fantastic Jazz band!

By floppyhatgigglinggal |

Want the best? Look no further! Sipped on 100 year old Grand Marnier and enjoyed the band after the best meal ever upstairs! Great beginning to end of the night!

Fantastic Experience

By Ericka F |

Great wine list and steak options! The service was top notch and it was a great experience! We had a party of 12 and the servers handled it no problem. The lobster cream corn was definitely a favourite for our group!

great joint

By Marcusdarnley |

Bohannon's is a great choice for a post-theatre drink and snack. Good food, comfortable atmosphere, excellent jazz band. The staff is professional and pleasant, the menu creative, and location perfect.

Nice place with knowledgable bartenders.

By Catherine C |

Very nice, elegant bar. We had a drink here while waiting for a table in the restaurant upstairs. My husband asked for a Sazerac. The bartender asked what type of rye he wanted and recommended one if he liked it smokey. My husband picked that one. When the bill came his Sazerac was an extra $12 or so due to the different rye so $24 for the one drink. It would have been nice to be warned about that ahead of time. We did enjoy the bar and would go again

Great classic bar!

By DennisG50 |

Enjoy a cocktail expertly prepared either before your dinner upstairs or after dinner on the way home! Great choices with a classy and classic feel to the grand wooden bar.

do not just go for a drink

This is the finest steak house in downtown San Antonio. Upstairs above Houston St across from the Majestic theatre is this gem. Great food, good wine list and capable staff combine for a great dining experience at Bohanans.

Dessert and Coffee

By STEVEN D |

The atmosphere at Bohanan’s Bar is a mix of laid-back vibe and elegance. We came for coffee and dessert to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Their staff is extremely courteous and very attentive which made of a very pleasant experience. We enjoyed the deep-dish pecan pie with vanilla ice cream; it had lots of nuts and was not too sweet. The owner, Mark Bohanan, is to be commended for have such a fine place in downtown San Antonio to go and have a great time.

Perfect way to spend a special Saturday night!

By Melissa P |

Celebrating our 10th anniversary in San Antonio, and we decided to skip the big steak dinner and have some fun experiencing old school cocktails and a meat/cheese block! Wow, we were NOT disappointed! Bartenders were fabulous, especially Tabitha! Jazz was nice and not too loud so we could still talk. Will be back for sure.

great people

Great people and servers. Wonderful atmosphere. Food delicious and lots of options. Dessert was fantastic.

Great

By lovenutrition |

Took my Mother there for a drink and dessert after her 80th birthday dinner. The band played a request for her (she didn't want Happy Birthday). The restaurant went out of their way to serve dessert in the bar to us even though it is 2 separate businesses. Great dessert and drinks!

Worst night

By Maria-Chiara E |

We were seated at our table and it seemed really nice and our first waiter seemed lovely. We were told to take our time to look over the menu and shortly there would be some to order our drinks. We were then introduced to another waiter who was now going to look after us for drinks and food. After the sixth waiter was introduced to use we felt like they drew the short straw to serve us. Our meal took a while to be served and ordering drinks or our meal felt like we were bothering them. Food was nice enough but not good enough to be treated poorly.

No reservations necessary downstairs!

By lovetoteach964 |

Upon reading the reviews and wishing to keep our trip a bit more casual, we elected to eat here rather than make a reservation at the steakhouse upstairs. Just a note, as we sat downstairs someone went up to the steakhouse in a tank top and shorts so I guess the dress code isn't as strict as suggested on their website. We are glad that we chose this part of the restaurant with a speakeasy-ish vibe. The tables had very comfortable chairs. There's also an outdoor area if you choose to sit there. The drinks were tasty and the food and service were good. I ordered a vodka drink with blackberry and lemon while my husband ordered the Gold Rush, which he enjoyed, then our server suggested the Don Lockwood which was a mix of bourbon and scotch. This was not as much to his taste, although he had no trouble drinking it! To eat we ordered a few things to share since so many menu items were appealing. We started with the duck confit eggrolls, and my husband ordered the French onion soup. Then we shared the wagu meatballs and griddled jumbo lump crab cakes. Everything was tasty and I would highly recommend. What we ordered was a perfect dinner still leaving room for ice cream at Justin's on the River Walk.

Best in San Antonio

By JohnTSanAntone |

Simply outstanding. We were looking for an exceptional bar to celebrate our anniversary with some after dinner drinks. We have eaten at the restaurant but haven’t tried the bar. Wife enjoyed mixed drinks (aviation and blackberry gimlet) and I enjoyed some great whiskey (15 year Redbreast and hard to find 18 year Bunnahabhain). All drinks were reasonably priced. Bar had a live jazz band and bartender provided prompt and friendly service. To top it off they brought complimentary glasses of champagne.

ALWAYS GREAT!!

By DD S |

They have a new Courtyard Room with seating on the glass! The Lamb, Escargot, mushrooms and Sea Bass were excellent. The brussels sprouts were overdone and tasteless. Great wine and coctail selections. Superior Service!! Bohannans is at the tope of list for dinner!

Great Beginnings

By ntflady |

Our before dinner drinks were made to perfection and the service was the best. Also I loved the old-world charm of the "men's lounge" look of the bar area.

One of the BEST Upscale 5 Star Bar's Anywhere

By John R |

We were told this was a place to go to for an upscale scene so dress accordingly. Slacks, nice shirt, suit/tie or Tux is welcome. The bar has comfortable seats and couches/chairs for more romantic, private casual seating by the windows. We ordered some wine and had great conversations with "Gracie" the #1 bartender, at least that's what we thought. No matter what you order everything is top shelf. Excellent wine list by the glass or bottle. I would say everything is at least 25% higher here than anywhere else but the service, level of offerings and feeling of serenity is worth every penny. We came here several times during our weeks stay and each time we were rewarded with the same style and servcie. "Adam" is also a great bartender.

Good food

By 121cathys |

We picked Bohanan's based on outstanding reviews and ratings and though the food was great, and our server was outstanding, there were a lot of miscues. Our server kept apologizing that we caught them on an unusual night as they'd had a very large group unexpectedly, but it's off-putting to go to a steakhouse and find out that they've run out of steak. One person in our party was served his steak ten minutes after everyone else as something went wrong with his original meal. And several of our sides weren't delivered at all. They did reduce our bill due to the series of issues, but we'd rather have paid full price for the excellent experience we expected.

Always Relaxing

By Cheryl G |

Yes- the drinks are a bit pricey but well worth it- Prohibition style drinks, evening entertainment and an atmosphere that just puts you in the mode to unwind. Sample the appetizers and meet some new friends. Terrific bartenders & waitstaff are there to please at a moment's notice. Very upscale. Great for starters if you are waiting for your party to arrive before moving upstairs to Bohanan's Steakhouse for dinner. I give this place Five Big Stars! Valet parking available. Within walking distance of local businesses, hotels and Riverwalk.

Oustanding in every way!

By diner809 |

This is the best in San Antonio in every way! It is very elegant and the perfect dining experience for any special occasion. The service was impeccable, the menu was superb, and the atmosphere was elegant! The bar is a special treat before or after dinner with live music.

Great Place to Meet Friends Downtown

By Cindy G |

Love the cozy seating areas plus available seating at bar. Service is excellent with a wide range of specialty drinks.

Excellent as Always

By Grady D |

Excellent, as always. Great steaks with all the trimmings. Very elegant atmosphere and impressive wine list. Impeccable staff. Also, the bar is a great after dinner or after show stop to listen to great jazz.

Perfect birthday dinner/service

By Jane P |

The service, food, and acknowledgement of my birthday celebration couldn't have been nicer. Sergio Estrada, our server, was friendly, helpful, and helped make my dinner enjoyable/special. The window seating was perfect. Drinks in the bar area before being seated was also enjoyable/friendly. The sea bass and filet dinner was outstanding. Thanks to all of the staff!

best food and service in San Antonio

if you are looking for a delicious dinner and fun bar look no further go to Bohanan's. One of the best dinners I have had. Excellent food and impeccable service. They will accommodate anything you desire.

Jazz and high end cocktails

By Wanda75019 |

We came upon this place after dinner on Saturday night. The cocktail list had both classic and interesting and the wine pours were generous. The best of the night was the live jazz. Not too loud, but just right. The clientele is upscale and well dressed. This location will be one of our regular San Antonio spots

Upstairs for dinner, downstairs for drinks!

By Freefire77 |

Drinking or eating, this place has it all! The rich wood and well furnished bar downstairs temps one to stay on ground level, but doing so will have your stomach howling for what is arguably the best meal in SA, located just upstairs. Bring an appetite (and your wallet) for the dining is first class all the way. Ensuring pleasure by starting with the French grilled oysters or the scallops will have your pallet ready for more. Their steaks, of any kind, are faultless and well accompanied by sides. Desserts of many varieties are available and a great finisher to a meal done right.

December 2014 Nightlife Visit

By MattSWine |

This is a review of Bohanan's Bar vice their restaurant, which I reviewed separately under the other listing in TripAdvisor. Love the Bar's ambiance and mood. Upscale feel, warm wood, cozy lighting, good jazz music and drinks and sprawling seating. My tux and my wife's snazzy dress fit right in with the setting. They were BUSY that night, so service was a touch slower than we may have wanted, but it was VERY attentive in approach.

Has great atmosphere!

By Dan M |

We stopped by Dec 19th. We didnt get to have any drinks because it was too crowded and busy.we did walk around and really liked the decor and presentation. Great Jazz band playing. Will definately return when its not so busy.

Classy place with a broad selection of traditional and creative drinks

By BigJon55 |

This is a good place to cool off in the afternoon with friends. Comfortable seating and dark wood, club room atmosphere make it a good place to feel like a “grownup “ as one of my companions described it. The drink menu is extensive and everything we tried was a good choice.

Finally, a touch of class in San Antonio

By lizalot |

I travel to San Antonio often, and I can find great ambiance or great food downtown, but never combined. This place has both. The true secret weapon is their service, which is absolutely top-notch. The bartender, Matt, made turned a gin hater into a gin lover with one drink, a Prohibition-era cocktail called a Fitzgerald. Delicious! Also, many people have told me that some uber-expensive tequila was a wonderful sipping tequila, and they've all been wrong, except for Matt. I wish I remember what it was called. I had a light dinner at the bar, and it was fabulous. Also, I used to enjoy Jim Cullin's jazz band at the now-defunct Riverwalk establishment, The Landing. I was fortunate enough to stumble upon them here & learn that Bohanan's is their regular gig now, and was treated to some great music on top of everything else. Decor is old school upscale, there's a long bar and several cozy seating areas, as well as an outside courtyard. Patrons ranged from young couples on dates, groups of business people, girls night out groups, to retirees. I'll definitely be returning as there's nothing else like this downtown in San Antonio. Note that prices are high, but the quality merits it.

Great food and superb service

By lonestarlizard |

This visit was for a 55th wedding anniversary. I had requested a street view table and that is what we got. From walking in and being seated immediately as well as throughout our meal, the service was impeccable. Megan, our server was friendly and professional. The young man assisting the servers was a gem as well. We shared the Chateaubriand for two which came with potatoes and grilled asparagus. The beef quality was excellent but just a little shy of being medium done. That wasn't a real issue though and we both enjoyed the meal and our dining experience. It was a wonderful, relaxing dinner for us and again, the overall professionalism of the service team members was second to none. I enthusiastically recommend Bohanan's as a must go to restaurant.

Excellent service

By chamilton2015 |

Bar was cozy while we waited for our dining table. They were prompt & offered other services if we were interested.

Beautiful bar and great drinks.

By Lisa F |

We had a round of drinks here before heading upstairs for dinner. Beautiful bar with plenty of comfy chairs and couches. Our waiter was very good and the bartender was very professional. They have some different drinks on their menu too. Had a meat charcuterie plate which was very tasty.

Love the food at this place. Great steak, just a little pricey. Nice atmosphere, with an upscale clientele!

So Gatsby-esque!

We were here only for drinks while bar-hopping in San Antonio. This place is classy! Great cocktails, amazing ambiance and super comfy chairs. They have a dress code so no shorts, etc.

Always My Go-to Restaurant When Family or Close Friends Come to Town

By RABabcock |

My close cousins came to visit San Antonio for the first time and I went with my Go-to restaurant to impress: Bohanan's. We started at the bar where Jordan impressed with his making of a classic Champagne Cocktail to eating upstairs and being serviced by the best Sommelier in the city (arguably the state), Fabian Jacob and had expert and great service by Enrique. We split two appetizers and the escargot & baby arugula were "killer" and we all had 11oz fillets, shared sides (garlic mash, mac & cheese, asparagus, and creamed spinach), and ravenously consumed everything. The wines(red & white) recommended by Fabian were outstanding and the flambé deserts of Bananas Foster and Strawberry Imperial were perfect ending to our fantastic meal. To say I love this place would be an understatement.

Over rated food

By Lacey F |

The food was over rated. Nothing special especially considering the prices. Also it was a very loud place. Had to yell to be heard. Cool bar

Beautiful bar

By Charles V |

Stopped in here on the way to dinner and then again on the way out. Beautiful, elegant, friendly, good service and drinks. Need to stop by on a Friday for the live jazz.

What a place!

By B L |

Top rate service, awesome drinks, tremendous food. We were in San Antonio for a week and went back to Bonahan's three times. Between the martinis and other cocktails (I recommend the Honey Bee), the fine dining service (3 servers covering our table), and even the bar food (steak tartar with quail egg), every visit was a dream. It would take too long to break everything down but as experienced diners, I think we know a good meal when we find one and this is one of them. The hard part is that we have to return home now and deal with the Applebee's-world-of-food and have nowhere to turn. We've been poisoned by the great experience of what a place like Bonahan's has to offer....now what?

4.5-Star Bar with Excellent Food

By Kurt H |

Flew into town tonight, so I had no reservation at their restaurant upstairs and they couldn't fit me in. I appreciate the goal to maintain quality! Wait staff encouraged me to eat at the bar, and I almost made the mistake of passing that option by to eat elsewhere. The atmosphere is a very nice, formal sort of bar with wood wall paneling and ceiling, nice back-bar display. Their tables are rather nice too, cloth napkins, excellent steak knives, etc., so it isn't a bar-like atmosphere. The chop salad was a good starter with a nice dressing. The 7oz filet was very good, tender, done just right. I'm not a fan of french fries for , but the flavoring of these french fries was unique and outstanding. The bread pudding was the top 1-2 I've had anywhere. I'd gladly return.

Excellent gist visit to Bohanan’s Bar, the downstairs venue.

By ron c |

Vidal was a great bartender and server. I started with the sashimi tuna appetizer which was just about perfect in temperature as seared and a nice crust. For my mains I had the 7oz filet medium. For drinks i started with a Moscow mule followed by a mezcal margarita. Since i walked from my hotel on the Riverwalk, i tried the Dalmorec18 scotch to finish the meal.

Bohanan's is in the top 5 restaurants i have ever been to.

By stephen v |

We were celebrating an anniversary so we chose to eat at Bohanan's. Apparently there were several other couples doing the same thing that night. Outstanding food, great menu, service the best we ever experienced. Pricey but it was an anniversary, we will be back!

24 ounce new your strip!

By michiganman09 |

A very nice fine dining experience! I had the 24 ounce new york strip and my wife had the 24 ounce ribeye. Needless to say, we had leftovers. The service was top notch, high class. The food was excellent!

Food good Servers left

By skgcdl |

We had not been to Bohanan's in years because our food was not worth the price last visit, but last night after the REO Speedwagon concert at the Majestic we decided to give the bar a try because of all the great reviews we have heard in the papers. We asked when we walked in if they were still serving food and was told yes pick a table. When no on brought a menu, I went and got one. A waiter cam and took our drink order and another brought us water. After about 15 minutes our drinks came and we said we were ready to order food. The waiter said the kitchen was closed but would put our food order in. The food arrived in a timely manner and a another waitress came to fill our water glass and ran out of water and she was the last person we saw. We finished and waited another 15 min but no one appeared so my husband went to the bar and asked for out ticket, still nothing after 5 minutes so he went to another bartender at the other end of the bar and stood and waited for ticket.

Perfection at a bar

By Psych00 |

I came here on a weekday night and it was not busy at all. The waiter and likely bar manager was quick to great me and make sure I was checked in to the restaurant. He was incredibly helpful in discussing the drink offerings and customizing it to my personal tastes. The level of service and attention to detail was fantastic and made for a wonderful experience before a fantastic meal. If you are dining there, make sure to allow time to stop for a drink before dinner. It is the perfect way to begin you dining adventure.

prime steak?

By rwhouse67 |

disappointed in the rib eye steak they call prime. Will not order a steak there again. Did enjoy the bar. The desert was not exceptional.

Awesome!

By Guillermo R |

Had heard of Bohanan's, and finally made it. From the moment you enter, the bar area is a throwback, very nice. Have a cocktail. Then go to the dining area, beautiful setup. Ignacio was responsible for us, and he was very insightful in regards to the restaurant, history. Helpful and knowledgeable about wine list (some where overpriced), but reasonable prices for the most part. Make sure you order the oysters (they're special), they were very good. My wife had the red snapper which was incredible. I came for a steak, and had the 11 oz filet. I can honestly say it is the best steak I've ever had!!!, I ordered it medium and was perfectly cooked. I enjoyed every bite!!. Do not go overboard with the sides (which were good), because you will not be able to finish them. Unfortunately could not try their desserts, as we were full. Pricey yes, but very well worth it.

Needed Warmth

By SandBetweenMyToes007 |

We got to the restaurant early so we sat at the bar for a drink and to wait for our reservation time. I wasn't sure why the staff behind the bar seemed put off that they had to be there, but when someone would ask about their reservations they were redirected to Did you check in with the lady in the back? It sounded like, I don't want to be bothered with answering a question that has nothing to do with me. Ouch! I guess it would have worked better for that bar staff if that lady at the back walked over to the bar and ask our name and reservation time.

Perfect evening

By tomhenryno |

Bohanan's is the place to be. My wife and I go there at lease once a month for dinner and/or drinks and listen to the South Texas Jazz Band play. The food and service is 5 star.

Awesome Experience

By Snuff a |

Bahanan's is going to cost you money. Know that going in. You will probably want to make reservations as well. Upon arrival, you walk into the first floor bar. Really nice atmosphere, kind of like walking into an old saloon; wood everywhere, nice long wooden bar to sit at along with tables and chairs throughout. If you are there for food, then you will be escorted to an elevator in the rear of the bar. Up you go to the second floor and are greeted by the hostesses. The seating area is white table cloth, fine dining, though the dress code is business casual. We made reservations for our 10th anniversary... they sat us in a 1/2 circle booth that had rose petals laid out along the outside edge. A nice touch and done in a detailed way so they wouldn't be a nuisance. The service was outstanding. Our waiter knew all there was to know about the menu and drink selection answering all of our questions with no issues at all. He had just enough casual conversation so that it wasn't a robot waiting on us, but he didn't linger there talking either. Prompt service on everything from drink refills, to just checking on us. The food was outstanding as well. Escargot was the best. Steaks were thick, cooked to perfection and tender/juicy as you'd want them to be. Our sides were Mac n cheese and baked squash. The mac n cheese was so thick with cheese it was hard to swallow, but then you thought, "That was awesome!" as you took a drink to wash it down. The baked squash was some of the best I've ever had. Came in a mini cast iron skillet for that perfect browning. The sides are basically ordered one per person, placed in the center of the table and served family style. I actually really enjoyed that, especially since I was there for a special occasion. Sharing is good people! The drink selection was fabulous as well. Plenty of beers to choose from and a wine/cocktail list that never ended. Overall, this place is a must for me when I return to San Antonio. Highly recommended.

Across from Majestic Theatre, easy access, light on customers

By Dewey Owens |

Easy access from Majestic Theatre, not many customers on night visited after Majestic Theatre. Staff a bit short handed. Restrooms close and accessible. Service was good but lack of staff hindered quick service. Dessert ordered arrived very late after it was ordered; was told it had to come from restaurant upstairs. Waiter good but over extended. Outdoor seating allowed for smoking, to include cigars.

repeat visit disappointing

By louise8495NR |

Had amazing meal at Bohanan's a few years ago while in San Antonio for a meeting. I went back again during that same meeting because it was so delicious. Could not wait to go back recently when returned to San Antonio. It was not at all the same quality that I remember. They were very busy but no excuse for the slow poke service and the food was just not nearly as good as it had been in the past. I was embarrased that I had bragged about the place to friends and embarrased that I had taken them there for such an expensive mediocre meal. Won't be going back and for the price, I would not recommend. Seems like they have just gotten too busy to handle well.

Why is this Japanese?

By George Q |

This is not Japanese cuisine. Thankfully I was looking for a steakhouse and bar, and this is definitely the place for that.

Terrible service and don't remember the food

By Zinnia queen |

We came here last Sunday evening before the Majestic Theater show for drinks and appetizers. Got in at 5:45pm and were told by a female waitstaff that she'd be right back. hmmm...10 minutes later a guy was asking us what we wanted for drinks, got those ordered and then maybe 5 minutes later put in our food order and told them we were trying to leave by 6:45 to see the show across the street.. Our food had still not come by 6:30pm. My husband got up and found our guy who said he would check on it. At 6:40pm food showed up and we ate what we could quickly without choking to death. All we ordered was the baked brie and the cheese plate - now how long does that take to put together? So eating crackers and cheese as we leave the restaurant and I didn't feel at all bad about spilling some of it. Will never go back. For the price one pays and terrible service, why would one go back?

Best Steak in Texas

By Concierge |

Best Steakhouse in San Antonio. Food, Service, Wine..... simply amazing. Also tried Bohanans for lunch, absolutely fantastic!

Sad service for such a beautiful place

By ChristyBouska |

Our service was poor. Not just slow- poor. Waited over 15 minutes for menus - then drinks were slow. Like rudely slow. Poor attention to our table overall - lacked friendly behavior. Water person and was attentive and friendly as was Matre de. Lots of empty tables so couldn’t figure out what the issue was. Filet was great- red snapper - great. Food was good. Experience was not worth the price we paid. Won’t go back- go to Landry’s - or Texas de Brazil-

One of the Best

By PETERMEX |

Excellent Steakhouse with Prime beef and very good service. At Houston ST near Riverwalk. The Bar is Old School wood all the way. New York style in San Antonio. For a fancy dinner is the place. Special occasion or not always very good.

Best Bartender in San Antone!

Javier, the bartender, was personable, professional, and a lot of fun. Extremely talented at making classic cocktails!!!

A beautiful place

By corsicus |

The bar area is very nice and it's a good place to meet for cocktails. You can actually hear in this bar and it has comfortable chairs and sofas. The martinis were wonderful and ask for the blue cheese olives. It's a lovely place.

Is a Great Bar in all aspects. Luxurios for San Antonio. The service is ok and you can have lunch there. Very good place to have a Drink...

the best in downtown san antonio

You can't stump these bartenders...they know their business. The mixed drinks as well as the scotch and bourbon selections are fantastic. Ask them to give you a hand carved ice ball for your drink.

A cozy stop on a magic evening

By Gabriel H |

While waiting for our reservation upstairs, at Bohanan's steakhouse, we took refuge in the bar during the only snowfall in San Antonio in many years. It was cols outside and the snowflakes were huge! Watching the snowfall from the bar was so cozy, especially with an excellent Manhattan in my hand and an Alexander in my friend's hand. We followed the cocktails with a lovely glass of fresh white wine, whcih we finished in time to go up for dinner. The limelight, the wood paneling, the old classic furniture, the quiet but efficient bartenders, and the little snacks make for a very pleasant and relaxing stop.

Good selection and location

By Lance H |

Nice location with a comfortable, refined, atmosphere yet upscale. I don't drink wine but some friends were quite impressed with the selection. I do drink scotch and I was quite impressed with the selection! The atmosphere has a masculine, club feel to it. The service is top-notch. I love how the serve drinks on the rocks with one giant, crystal clear ice-cube! Try dining upstairs if you can.

Go on Friday nights when there's live jazz.

By Claude H |

Bohanan's has live jazz and Friday nights, and those are the best nights to visit. The place is old-school class and charm, with excellent food and drinks.

Derrick is Amazing at this Bar!

By J E |

We had dinner plans at Bonhanan’s Steak House and heard they had an amazing bar with Derrick, being their amazing bartender, so we stopped in about an hour before dinner to enjoy sitting and sipping at his bar. He was quick to greet us, we told him we heard good things and he asked what we liked in the way of spirits and flavors. He then was off to make a couple of outstanding cocktails, some of the best we’ve had! This place get busy and packed, so get there early if you have dinner reservations elsewhere to ensure you have time to sit and enjoy your cocktail or wine. They also off bar bites and limited entrées here. Highly suggest stopping in, even if only for a drink!

ambiance was Great!

By andrew t |

Fantastic UPSCALE place to enjoy a drink. Valet service was Amazing. They stayed late to ensure we had our vehicle at the end of evening.

What a great place!

By Suzanne A |

Walked in on a whim at 10:00 PM and didn't leave until after midnight. Great classic cocktails, excellent food and fantastic live jazz.

What a great selection!!

By Kim T |

This is one of the best stocked bars we have been to in a long time. They had rare Scotch and Bourbon as well as an excellent choice in unique cocktails. We had a wonderful experience and can't wait to go back!

For a Special Occasion

By MagicKirin |

I took my mother here for her birthday. We arrived early, but there was no problem getting seating. The staff is very attentive but will let you take your time. We started with Grilled French Oysters(their specialty) and tuna sashimi We both had fillets with the Portobello mushrooms and mashed potatoes . The steak sauces was a minute late and they gave it to us with no charge Finished up with a dessert The only problem is the acoustics in the room, which enhanced the noise of two groups of people who were extremely noisy and inconsiderate. This was Monday Nov 20th so you know who you are. But you can't blame the restaurant for that.

Old World Charm

By jdlasser |

If you like to settle into an old leather chair, listen to music, or visit with friends, while enjoying your favorite cocktail, this is the place. I've always liked the old English look of the private clubs of the last century, especially the Lanesborough Hotel in London, and here at Bohanan's, I get the same feeling. Extraordinarily savvy bartenders, friendly, and interested in where their patrons come from. Very comfortable.

Great service and exceptional food

By Opirfr2011 |

We were slightly confused when we entered the restaurant as the front entrance (Houston St. side) was to the bar/lounge area. The side entrance, between the restaurant and an adjacent building, which we were unaware of was for the restaurant on the 2nd floor. Upon taking the elevator to the 2nd floor we were met immediately by a hostess who confirmed our reservation and sat us quickly. Right after she left, our waiter came to our table and provided excellent service from appetizer and drinks to dessert.

Classy joint

By corn180 |

We went here for drinks as it was steps from our hotel and it was just 2 doors down. What a beautiful bar..the woodwork, light fixtures, furniture..just gorgeous. the service was fantastic, knowledgeable about drinks. We had live music that night, a classy jazz band..very cool..a very romantic time. i had an $11 drink..for me that is ridiculous..until i got it..it was the best drink i have ever been served. totally worth every penny. We really enjoyed lounging in the open seating available ..you could choose from leather couches by the music or in a library or various tables, which were set up in a way that offered each table a bit of privacy instead of a room of tables. a very lovely evening and a delicious drink with quality ingredients.

Astounding!

By francatraversa |

Impossible to find imperfection. From the kindness of our guest, Burton, to the decadent dessert, through one of the best ribeye of my life everything was perfect. Great experience. Absolutely to repeat!

Unwind

Time to relax and unwind after having dinner upstairs. The jazz band was just the magic touch we were looking for.

hadn't visit Bohanan's in months, glad to go back to the same, discrete lights, private and romantic ambiance, with superb wines and steaks, the lamb is outstanding the salads, the banana foste dessert, plus a staff that will make sure your visit is an experience.

A Night Of Excellent Service

By Paulette M |

This restaurant was recommended to us and it was not disappointing. It has it ALL, friendly and well trained staff, beautiful table settlings, the most delicious food and tables that over look the street. A large selection of fine wines, great steaks and fish dishes. Our waiter was Preston who made our evening one that we will remember as very special. This restaurant is on the higher pay scale.

Excellent

By Diablu1 |

Went there with the wife while in San Antonio, had heard it was a good steakhouse. The place did not disappoint, from the moment you enter. Have a cocktail in the bar, and then you are led to the dinning room. Had an excellent waiter, that gave us the history of the restaurant, as well as being well versed in the special of the house, and wine list. The steak was the best steak I have had, my wife had seafood. Do not order extra sides (we had the potatoes and asparagus), the portions are more than enough! The restaurant is pricey, but worth every morsel !. I will go back on my next visit to San Antonio.

Upscale yummy

By Aunttabby |

I had the avocado stuffed with crab salad and the baked brie, both dishes were perfect. I took my own gluten free crackers to have with the brie but the waitress told me they did have some on hand. It would be nice to know what gluten free things a restaurant has beforehand as I have to plan what I am going to order. The white wine list was disappointing and the 10 yr port was rough; I've ordered 10 yr port at many restaurants and it was never this poor a quality. That being said, Bohanan's upstairs or down remains one of my favorite places to dine.

best jazz ever

By jefffairfax |

although bohanans steak house is a bust the bar is great--the jazz group playing was the most competent and diverse I have ever listened to in a bar setting what a quality group

Fantastic Ambiance!

We stopped in on the way back to hotel for a perfect nightcap! And a wonderful Jazz trio was playing and capped the evening off to a tee!

The place is a little loud at least it was this night. I have visited many fine restaraunts in my travels. Teh service and pace was on the slow side. I ordered the larger Rib Eye which is my favourite cut. Like most of these high eat meat shops you have to order your sides a la carte. This is a pet peeve of mine. Anyways I did get au gartin which were very good. Others at the table ordered other cuts as well as sea bass. Overall the one comment was my steak was under done. Overall the five of us agreed good, tasty but not enough for what they charge. I will give them another shot but I will try a few others first.

dinner at Bohanan's

Ate dinner on a Friday night. Service was top notch! The dining room and atmosphere was also terrific. Food was very good, not excellent.

Charming steak house

By JPSalik |

I have been to Porter House, BLT, Ruth, Smith & Wollensky & Gallagher. This is a steak house that compares favorably in term of the quality of meat served. We had a Colorado lamb rack for two cooked as prescribed, medium rare for me and medium for my wife, it was delicious. The asparagus and carrots were perfectly cooked. I enjoyed the fried oysters and the tomato with mozzarella were just ok as the tomatoes were not ripe enough. I understand that as in New York the health department may require tomatoes to be kept refrigerated, but green tomato is tasteless. The apple dessert had a lot of dough and little apple, the reverse would have been better. The wine list is extensive and I found a nuits Saint George from Boisset, 2011 that was very pleasant, well balance for $130 that was just above twice retail price that is reasonable for a restaurant. The service was good and the pace just right. We left almost $400 for two, including wine and tips. The decor is pleasant and a charming old world atmosphere. I will go back again.

Old style bar

When you walk in you are back in the 40's with the décor and the drinks. Excellent service and excellent sophisticated drinks. A real New York style bar with real honest to goodness quality drinks!

Bohanan’s Bar

By STEVEN D |

We’ve dine at the Bar before and the bar menu provides for interesting dining delights. Their Dos XX Lager on tap is always cold and refreshing. We both sampled the BLT Sliders, made with Kurobuta Bacon, Hydroponic Lettuce, Heirloom Tomatoes, and House-made Basil Mayonnaise. The plates also came with house chips and pickle. Very delicious overall! Saving room for dessert, we had the Chimney Sweep, made with Vanilla Bean Ice Cream, Ground Coffee with a Shot of Scotch. We as which brand of Scotch was served in the ice cream and were told it was Famous Grouse. We always have a nice time here. There service is always superb and their food outstanding.

Best steak in Texas in my opinion!

By April V |

Whenever we come to San Antonio we have to come here to experience the best steak in Texas! Always deliciously prepared with a professional wait staff who seem to have perfect timing, not intrusive like some other restaurants of this caliber.

Old school bar and jazz

By dwsnoke |

The wine list and the drink list were great. The jazz was classic old school: old guys playing New Orleans style jazz. Couldn't get into the restaurant upstairs but it ended up fine-- the food served at the bar is quite nice (though not steaks) and the music can only be heard at the bar, not upstairs. I like that in their own ads, they list themselves as "swanky"-- that fits the old 1920's decor and overall style of the place.

Old fashioned bar, with good cocktails and service

By Gabriel H |

Located on street level, just underneath the restaurant of the same name, this is an excellent place to wait for your table. A long wooden bar, with bar-stools provides direct access to the bartenders. There are also small tables with comfortable chairs throughout the bar, with wait staff catering to your wishes. Well-supplied with all major liquor and particularly single-malt whiskies, the expert bartenders offer all traditional cocktails, plus a few of their own invention. The list of wines by the glass is limited, but you will find some enjoyable ones. The wines by the bottle presumably are the same offered by the restaurant itself, which is a great wine list.

Music, good food and fine service

By caio591 |

The waiters were all professional in their demeanor and appearance. The bartender took great pride in providing a superior drink and the small bites offered in the lounge were delicious. The night we were there, Jim Cullem (sp?) and his quartet were there playing dixie-land music and they were fabulous. We would recommend this place and will go again.

A Steakhouse Gem

By Mesquite1225 |

I came here to celebrate my birthday. We got there early so that we could enjoy a cocktail downstairs before dinner, and have a table to enjoy the Jazz Quartet while we waited for our reservation time. The wood paneling and ambiance can not be found in too many other places in San Antonio. Ask the bartender for his special margarita creation. The restaurant is upstairs. The elevator to get there is at the back of the bar. This is a very upscale restaurant with pricey dishes and the attentive staff to go with it. It is also a San Antonio exclusive. It is not a chain and it is owned by the Chef. I love the steak dishes here but everything is so good and equally satisfying. Side dishes are a-la-carte and also very fresh and tasty. I have come here to eat before the theatre, which is across the street, but if you call to make a reservation and let them know you need to get out of there quickly, they will try to accommodate you, or let you know if it is not possible.

Great Ambience, Service and Food!!!!

By southtexastraveller |

This place is fantastic place to take your significant other for just about any occasion. The wait staff and general personnel were great. From the moment you walk in to the restaurant you know you're walking into a classy place. My wife ordered a petite filet and I had their ribeye and they were cooked to perfection. They were tender and juicy. From what I could gather from our waiter, they get their steaks from a well known beef company out of Chicago. They serve aged steaks with various lengths of aging - you just have to ask for which one you're interested in. According to my wife, the last time she had a steak this good was when we visited Napa about 4 years ago. As for the mix drinks - they don't short change you in the least bit. My wife a margarita and myself a Wild Turkey with ginger ale. As per the waiter, they prepare their ginger ale drinks with a certain type of ale, but for the life of me, I can't recall what the name was. But, all in all, the food and drink was awesome. I truly recommend this place for anyone looking for a special place that serves it up well.

Great drinks!!

Me and my husband enjoyed great drinks in a great atmosphere with good music while waiting on our table at Bohanan's steakhouse upstairs! Can't wait to return!

They really take care of people with food allergies

By GlutenlessSinCity |

My husband and I had a wonderful lunch at the bar. The bartender prepared some classic drinks for us and they were awesome in chilled "coop" glasses. I have an allergy to dairy and wheat/gluten the bartender went to the kitchen to ensure I would not be served anything I'm allergic to. My husband loved the burger and Maytag lettuce wedge. I enjoyed a terrific steak and crab-stuffed avocado salad. The Napa wines were welcomed as well. Next time we are in San Antonio we will dine there again. We actually enjoyed lunch twice their on our 3-day Alamo excursion.

Fabulous Quartet

By LadyK1941 |

The South Texas Jazz Quartet plays here, and they are THE best modern live jazz quartet. They do classic tunes as well as their own riffs. This quartet makes Bohanan's a must visit during any Fri or Saturday in San Antonio. Gives the bar a real ratpack vibe. Love it!

Great specialty drinks

By Robert G |

I love to come in for a late eveing drink and listen to a little Jazz. The place is normally busy but we allways find seating.

good but pricey

By 350deborahg |

excellent service & food, but pricey for the amount, quality of food--especially for family of 5. nothing really within average income family, but good for a couple on special night out.

Great ambience and perfect drinks

By Duckgumbeaux |

Before our night at the fabulous Majestic Theater, we went to Bohanan's Bar for appetizers and drinks. Everything was perfect. The Old Fashioned was to die for. The chipped ice ball in the drink was a great touch and kept the drink ice cold without diluting the drink. All the appetizers were really tasty and the only reason for the four stars rating was that the hummus was a little too thick and dry to our liking. The taste was perfect but al little too thick for us. The server was extremely helpful and attentive. We will definitely return and probably for a full meal.

In the words of Toby Keith, "I Love This Bar."

By Jamey D |

It's MY kind of place. Just walking through the front door puts a big smile on my face. The bar has a perfect 1920s era charm to it. I love the lights, I love the chairs, and I do enjoy hearing the jazz band play. And that's not even getting into its offerings. Now, I don't drink, but I did order the pork belly sliders, and they were delish! The pork was cooked and seasoned beautifully, the apple jack BBQ under the pork was sweet and savory, and I liked the buns. My father got the short ribs, which I tried at my last visit earlier this year, and they were still good. I think the surprise was the grilled brie. I have NEVER had brie before, because it's bitter, or so I have been told. Bohanan's grilled brie on baguettes and pita was creamy, not bitter, and delicious. Probably the best thing we ordered. The lobster-corn fritters were also good. I also got the Butter Rum Cheesecake for dessert, and saying it was divine would be putting it mildly. Nice, creamy, great flavoring with the rum, and, I have to say, it's one of the best cheesecakes I've ever had. Better than the cheesecake from the upstairs dining room, I dare say. I also got an espresso, and it was good despite the lack of crema (reddish-brown foam that's meant to top the coffee.) You do not need to go to the steakhouse upstairs to get the premium Bohanan's experience. They have nice staff and great food in the bar downstairs, and I actually enjoy the bar more because of its charm. It's a charm that cannot be matched anywhere in Texas. If your just looking for a drink or a good bite to eat, or you have business at the Majestic or Empire, I say Bohanan's Bar is a briliant choice for you. Thanks to my folks and friend for bringing me here tonight.

Wow

By Andrew_Steward |

Best steak I've ever had! Yes it was very expensive but it was worth every penny! Service was out of this world, I've never had 3 waiters for one meal before, I'm about to leave the restaurant $200 lighter (1 person) but I'm smiling all the way home!

A good place for an aperitif before dinner

By Gabriel H |

Bohanan's Bar is located on the ground floor, immediately below the restaurant. Service is friendly and the myxologists are excellent. They offer a few wines by the glass, but their emphasis is on cocktails. There is s brief bu very good bar menu, although if you are going upstairs, leave room for the outstanding food that awaits you.
