Good atmosphere

By Serge G |

I heard a lot about speak easy places and maybe had inflated expectations. You need to reserve a table and they send you by mail a password (bit you can also drop in without the password and sit near the bar). It was dark and romantic atmosphere with good old music but nothing special to describe like 'hidden gem'. Cocktails and other spirits from around the world form a sizable alcohol menu (no food of course). I tried some whiskey based cocktails (e.g. Holy smoke) and they were good. Good place to drink something in meditation mood or to have undisturbed chat with somebody.

Authentic Vibe

By Nikki D |

I've been to quite a few speakeasies in various cities and this is the first that actually felt like one. I like that you get an email with a password to get in, and that it isn't labelled outside, nor is there a bouncer waiting by the door. The atmosphere inside is cool, and a nice place to grab some interesting cocktails with a small group or your significant other. The only thing keeping my review from 5 stars is the service. Luckily, they didn't adhere to the 1.5 hour time limit for us (probably because it was a week night) as there wouldn't have been time to get a second drink if they did. It was that slow. And then another 20+ minutes to get the check.

Amazing hidden bar

By 517sachad |

no sign on the street and if you know the secret password you'll discover a very private speakeasy in an old library. great cocktails. great service. awesome place. you'll surprise your friends/clients

Fun and different

By BosDad |

I found this place on Trip Advisor and made a reservation for myself and three colleagues. Days later they were still talking about it and had posted and tweeted to their followers back home. The drinks are crazy expensive but well made and unique. I wouldn't go every night, but I would take out of towners there again for a memorable time.

Amazing cocktails

By Thwamy |

Really cool speakeasy with a dim, chill setting. The bartenders were very kind and the cocktails we had were unique. Definitely going back.

Amazing atmosphere and exceptional cocktails

By BibliotecariaJen |

I have been raving to everyone about our visit to Bourbon & Branch. We went early in the evening, and there were several other couples, but it felt like we were the only ones there. They have amazing classic jazz and swing on constant rotation, giving the place a great atmosphere suited to a speakeasy. Each cocktail we had was superbly crafted and well-balanced. The spirits list was exceptional, but it was difficult to want to order a neat spirit when the cocktails were so good! I only wish I were closer to SF so that I could experience this place again sooner!

Amazing place for drinks and a true speakeasy

By bengold90 |

To access Bourbon & Branch, you will have to reserve online, and then, you will receive a password to use in obtaining admittance to the speakeasy. Then, at the entrance, which does not look like anything, on a corner, you will be asked to provide the password to gain entrance. When inside, you will be taken to a booth where you can enjoy homemade drinks, with nice quotes below each drink describing further the drink. There are two bars within the bar as well. One called Wilson and Wilson, where you can have seats for a small group, and the other bar that you gain access through an hidden door being a library. No photos, no cell, quiet place with amazing drinks, I would recommend selecting one of the traditional drinks and one of their seasonal drinks. Whatever your poison is, they have a drink with it. Most drinks are strong but extremely good.

Overrated

By emmawilson88 |

We booked this bar well in advance and we're excited to try somewhere different, I understand there's a password and its secret and there are two entrances, however he staff didn't seem to know which was which and sent us between the two doors twice before we were allowed in. Finally once being seat, it was nice however nothing overalls special or worth the price or hype

Very cool place

By Dpf |

Even though I smelled like a 100 year old barrell of wisky the following day, it was well worth it. Proper cocktail bar. And now I know why Don Draper was constantly rubbered, after having a couple of old fashioned's

Wilson and Wilson Detective Agency

By maxpaste |

We made reservations for the Wilson Detective Agency speakeasy within Bourbon and Branch. It was a small bar with maybe 10 seats at the bar and another 12 or so seats at small tables. We enjoyed the theme and drinks .

Deliciously Crafted Cocktails

By jessaza |

This place was the perfect spot to kick off my fiancé's birthday celebration! Make sure to make reservations in advance, a password is needed. We arrived a little late but no fuss was made. It was my fiancé's 31st birthday, so I knew the concept of this speakeasy would throw him for a loop. Overall, he loved everything about it. The ambiance is cozy and mysterious. We absolutely loved not being able to use our phones during our time there and wished more places were like this. The seats were a little too cozy, but overall it was a perfect set up. The drinks are absolutely delicious and hella strong! Everything we found on the menu was under $15 and to us, that was a steal! Coming from Miami, we're used to $15+ cocktails. But not here, Bourbon & Branch has a heavy hand in crafting delicious cocktails. We both left very happy, to say the least. I'd definitely recommend this experience to everyone visiting the San Francisco area. Make reservations in advance! You need a password to enter.

Very cool

By SrqJP |

You must do a little online detective work to get your private invite but it's worth the kitschy speak easy scene. Great cocktails and ambience, and a nice respite from the louder and obnoxious packed trendy impresarios.

Unique date night!

By MooseMeanderings |

Unique experience right from getting the password to leaving out a separate entrance. When we arrived at the unmarked door we were greeted by a gent in period garb who whispered to us to follow him inside. Perused the extensive menu and tried a few different libations each. Romantic and fun night out. Helped to facilitate the date night atmosphere as no photos allowed so our phones stayed in our pocket. Only downside and it is a minor one- was that is was hard to read the menu with it being a dimly lit venue. Highly recommend this experience at least once but with the breadth of the drink list it would be great to return several times!

Seriously cool

By Eric |

You have to get a hold of them via email and they give you a password to get in. Its dimly lit has really cool décor, its a mellow vibe. Everyone is chatting and enjoying their drinks, which they only have a few. Which really doesn't matter because they are all good. If you're that person that likes to be on their IPhone machine all the time, do yourself a favor, don't go. If you're that bro that wants to take shots and hit on chicks, don't go.

A must!

By Tania |

This place was recommended to us by a friend. Booked online and the earliest we could get in was 11.30pm on a Wednesday evening. Great little dimly lit hidden bar with awesome atmosphere. No street signage and secret password required to enter. It’s like stepping back to the prohibition era. Deliciously crafted cocktails which were all strong. A must do whilst in San Francisco!

Excellent Experience!

By Jeff B |

Cool speakeasy vibe, very good drinks, excellent service, fun way to spend a late evening enjoying cocktails! Be sure to make a reservation to get the full experience.

If you love cocktails you must go!!

By RachaelRS530 |

I found this place online while planning my husband's birthday trip. He loves different cocktails and a speakeasy sounded like such a cool and unique date while there. I'm so glad we did it! You have to make reservations, but they email you a password to get in. They have rules online, but they weren't hounding people. It's dark inside, but it was nice because it makes you talk to whoever you're with. It's romantic but also fun. Our waitress was really nice, I wish we would've gotten her name. It's a must do if you like craft cocktails.

Fab little speakeasy!

By Kite_90 |

Try to go to a speakeasy in each city I travel to and this was one of the best. The atmosphere is set from as soon as you find the door and buzz the buzzer to enter and every member of staff keeps up the prohibition feel throughout the time there. Amazing cocktails! Thank you Katie for brilliant service and lovely experience! :)

Great place to decompress

By familytraveler368 |

Went in with my wife. Nice, dark ambiance plus a cocktail or two and you’ll soon forget you’re in the middle of a bustling city. The drink selection is good. The flavor is better. And the price is reasonable considering you’re paying for the experience as well as a cocktail. I love the fact that de-screening is one of their house rules (no phones). This really allows you to focus on the company you’re with instead of the little glowing screen and the outside world. In making a reservation - I think you really get what they claim to offer: a good drink that takes a while to get to you. I highly suggest you give it a try - at least once. Just go in knowing that Bourbon and Branch simply offers you a nice “watering hole” with some tasty “water”. It’s up to you to bring a positive vibe, some good conversation and pleasant company.

Wilson & Wilson within Bourbon and Branch

By moowliscious |

We reserved at table online, I needed to alter the time and date and emailed to do so. I received a quick reply saying this was no problem. We arrived bang on time for our booking and have our password to the guy on the door. He looked confused and said that wasn't the password for the night. I showed him the email so he rang a doorbell, a lady came to the door who we told the password, she looked equally confused and asked for my confirmation email. Once I'd Shen her this she disappeared inside, returned a few m s later and said that's fine, someone had given us the wrong password. Glad I had the email on me...... Once inside we were led through Bourbon and Branch which looked nice. At the back we went through a door into Wilson and Wilson. This was smaller than Bourbon , with seats at the bar and a few small tables opposite with a metal stool either side. Not very comfortable , but when you're limited to 1.5hrs there I guess they don't want you getting too comfy. There were 2 male mixologists behind the bar, one came out to give us the menu (a missing person file) and explain the drinks types too. He was friendly and patient with our indecision. I opted for the Night Gardener and my husband the red scarab. My drink smelled absolutely Devine, I wish they could bottle the scent as a perfume! And tasted just as gorgeous For our next drinks i had the forgotten man and my husband a bourbon from the extensive menu. The forgotten man also had such an addictive aroma, smokey and strong. It tasted warm and comforting. We will definitely go back here, the atmosphere was just what we like, no loud blaring music and no over the top loud people. Just a shame the stools and tables aren't a little more comfortable. After an hour we were ready to get up and move. No photos to go with my review as on the website it says no mobiles. My husband is blind in one eye and needed to use the light on his phone to see the means as the bar is so dark. This didn't cause any issues at all.

Loved it!

By emptynesteralmost |

From setting up our reservation to walking out the door at the end of our visit this was an easy, pleasant experience. Such a fun way to get to a Speak Easy! We tried a few different drinks that were explained to us beautifully. Great staff and interior. Would visit again!

Fun and unique experience! Tasty cocktails

By Whitney S |

Reservations need to be booked ahead of time. We received a call to confirm our reservation earlier that day which was nice. It is conveniently located not far from Union Square area. It's feels like a real live speakeasy. From the street it is discreet. We entered and it was very dark inside, and followed the hostess carefully because candlelight was all that was available. The menu is a bit confusing but the waitress did a great job of explaining it. We ordered off the Fresh and Fancy page. These are their sweet, and more citrus type drinks. The cocktails were delicious! The four of us played cards by the candlelight and had 2 rounds of drinks. It was a great time. Our recommendations: Seasonal Whiskey Smash (seasonal flavor was melon - yum!) Cucumber Gimlet, and El Camino.

Speakeasy in SF? Yes!

By mummblingme |

A mysterious journey into the back room library is what we found through a hidden door in this oh so fun, small and dark emporium of spirits (we mean the booze). Our bartender was a bit put-offish at first, but after we talked to her about what whiskeys she had and our interest in flavors she opened up. She then created a flight of unusual bourbons for us, while we perused the shelved books and people watched a diverse, but laid back crowd. Liked it so much, we did this twice in one week while visiting SF.

A dismal experience saved by great drinks

By Jyoti L |

We made our reservation at Wilson & Wilson (the secret bar at the back of Bourbon & Branch) and had a password specific to it. We arrived about 15 minutes prior to our reservation time. Side note: It's not at all hard to find this door. Just look for the long line of people and the doorman. Not exactly a secret speakeasy. After waiting 30min, it was now 15min past our reservation time. Once we were taken in, we were seated at B&Branch despite our W&W password. We reminded the hostess who said that it's too late to go to W&W now. Needless to say, we were quite disappointed. The ambience inside was nice and the drinks were utterly delicious. This would have been a great place to visit about 5 years ago but now is overrun by visitors. Not sure I'd go back but those drinks were damn good...

Fun in the dim light

By JohnnyBoy10001 |

From the first moment it was fun. The reservation came with a password and even we old folks had our age checked. The drink list is extensive and fun. The rye flight and the scotch flight were the big hits. On the way out we saw the sister bar, the library as we snuck out to avoid the cops. The staff helped make it fun all the way through.

A must visit place in San Fran

By BendRNA |

The Bourbon and Branch Speakeasy was a great bar to visit - old time prohibition feel to the place and the "secret" bars are fantastic. The drinks were very special - old time drinks updated with special ingredients and only fresh juices used.

Really Good Cocktails!

By AvWriter |

We have found a couple of these gems - the Berry and the Rye in Omaha for example - not a speakeasy concept, but a specialist in cocktails. Then there is Club Arcada Theater in St. Charles - speakeasy concept, but no really unique cocktails. This place was speakeasy AND unique cocktails! We each ordered 2 - they were tasty and strong. We tried their Club Cocktail, and Dollars and Sense first. They both had Orange Bitters, and were smooth. We moved on to a Silver Fox (very light on the tongue and in my opinion, dangerously tasty - you could get in trouble with one or two of these and a Brooklyn 2.0, which was a really neat Manhattan as far as I can tell. This one had a cherry in the bottom of the glass, which somehow had pulled some of the bourbon with it, so the last sip with the cherry came with a strong flavor of bourbon! The cool thing about these drinks is they were from the past - taken from various bars and what not - with the history in the menu. We had to move the menu to the lamp on the table to read it, it is quite dark in there. The mixologist was a master, and you do have to watch her, or you'll miss part of the fun. I watched her assemble a drink - she was very fast and very efficient. At one point, our server was occupied with other customers (one of whom had am arm around her waist?) and the mixologist came down to take our second order, which was appreciated. She was obviously trying to keep things moving. The hostess / master of ceremonies moved us efficiently in, after checking our IDs. Have yours out to save time. Make a reservation - it's the only way you get in, since you'll need to know the password. We were seated in the main area, and went over the rules. It was easy to follow them. No loud conversations, no standing at the bar, no smoking, no ordering of a cosmopolitan, you know, the usual stuff, oh, and no cel phone calls. No worries. The Anti-Saloon League sign was kind of neat. The door is unmarked. Watch for the hostess to go through a secret door on the end of the bar closest to the door. It has lighted bottle of booze in it. Neat stuff. Good drinks, fair service, great mixologist, great time!

Loved it

We had a themed birthday party here and it did not disappoint. I really loved the vibe here and we all had a blast. I look forward to coming back

Excellent drinks and environment

By Kim R |

Came for late night drinks with colleagues after an event. It is everything you expect. I did a little recon the day before to make sure I knew where we were going. It really is unmarked, big black door. When my group and I arrived the next night, I rang the door bell and it took a few minutes before someone answered it. They did ask for the password. We were escorted in and seated right away. It was on a Tuesday and it wasn't busy at all. We were a party of six and they seated us in a booth. I will say that it was very tight in that booth. The booths are probably better suited for a group of four. The menu is very overwhelming, but in a good way. Lots of options. The lighting is very dim and since we saw someone get yelled at for having their cell phone out, I didn't dare pull mine out to use the flashlight. Thankfully, each table has a little lamp. It came in handy. Keep in mind that there are no food options. Just drinks, but the drinks were so good. I had the cucumber gimlet which is often recommended in the reviews. It did not disappoint. AND on top of that, they were some of the most affordable drinks I had the entire week I was in traveling in California. I can imagine it might be more fun if there was a crowd in the place. Like I said, it wasn't busy on that Tuesday night at all. Our staff was very attentive and very informed on the menu. This was fun and all of my colleagues enjoyed it. Put it on your list when visiting SF!

Delicious drinks, and perfect ambiance.

By meandmymarguerite |

Worth the expense of the drinks - they're perfect. They're endless. Ask for the library / sneaky exit to experience the amusement of their set up - the bookcases all send you to different exits, all unmarked from the outside. The staff were knowledgeable and friendly - bartender and servers. The hostess had the perfect stoicism required for the charade of it all. If I had endless cash to spend on booze, I would go here over and over.

Awesome atmosphere

By HellaNorCal82 |

This is one of the neatest places I've ever experienced. A speakeasy?? I didn't even know that this existed so close to home. From having to give a password to get in, to the dim lighting and the workers, it felt authentic. My friend and I ordered the same drink and they tasted nothing alike....that was probably our only disappointment (I had a much better experience than my friend). The service was a little slow, but it's expected since it was a very busy Saturday night.

Speakin’ Easy

By Deborah E |

You ever go to a place that just captivates you? That was Bourbon and Branch for me. From the moment we arrived at the unmarked door and were greeted by the mysterious server we were entrenched in the mood of the speakeasy. The dark interior, with lively era appropriate music enhanced the experience. The cocktail list is extensive and the drinks are well prepared and presented. I love a good negroni and the Bourbon and Branch version was delicious. We took our second drinks through to the library. Also a fun room with a slightly different mood. If you’re in SanFran go to the Bourbon and Branch, enjoy a few pre or post dinner cocktail and speak easy. It’s worth the price of admission.

Amazing Drinks! And friendly mixologist!

By Jilara |

I will definitely be back. I opted for a reservation at Wilson and Wilson early on a Friday night (6:30) and was interested to see how this bar operated. I had heard of Bourbon and Branch, but I was intrigued by the detective theme. We arrived a little early, and there was a fellow stationed under the Anti-Saloon League sign who rang the buzzer for us. A woman opened the door and asked both for name and the password. She disappeared, and was back a few minutes later to escort us in. We entered via Bourbon and Branch, and it was impossible to see anything except flickering candles (the only light source) after the brightness outside. Adventure! We stumbled through the dark, and through a passage to Wilson and Wilson, which had better light due to the frosted front window. It was cozy and intimate, and we sat at a table instead of the bar (we were offered a choice). They brought us a dossier in a folder. At the back, there was a list of cocktails, mostly themed after famous detective tales, for the most part. They were divided into lighter drinks, standard cocktails, and apertifs. We opted for a flight, to split between us, for an initial experience. Our first choice was a larger drink, so our friendly mixologist, who explained the cocktails and the system to us, said she could split it into a "Nick and Nora" (Charles, obviously!). Thus we each started with our own glass. This woman was fantastic, entertaining to watch, as she deftly mixed drinks, sometimes with a shaker in each hand, like castanets! And was great at explaining the nuances of each drink. Ultimately, we had a 3-drink flight and a single. My husband, who normally just drinks mai tai's, swears by everything he had, and declared them the best drinks he'd ever had. Strong and delicious! It was also refreshing to be in a bar where you can hear your companion and carry on a conversation without shouting. No photos, no cell phones, quiet atmosphere---wonderful! When you are through, you are escorted into the Library Bar. While there, we chatted and made some new friends. The whole experience was great!

On Point, Very Deep List of Cocktails

By IowaTraveler76 |

We booked our reservation on line, fun schtick of having to use a password, seated promptly, very dark inside, cool vibe. Very deep list of cocktails of all sorts, broken down by spirit. Very tasty, enjoyed two cocktails each, then were led through a bookcase to a 'non-secret' bar next door. More open, well lit next door with the same cocktails available, and few others featured. Despite a little rough neighborhood, very cool spot I would highly recommend for craft cocktail enthusiasts.

Throwback

By Colin J |

A speakeasy. Dark, romantic, intimate. Boozy creations that were fantastic. I would never have found this place without the assistance/direction from a local, but I hope that people are searching for experiences like this. I'm sure that anyone who enjoys a good drink and great moody music to enjoy the company of your company would love this place!

Loved the mystique!

By tobo347 |

What a fun experience! Love the fact you have to have a password to get in. Once inside, the atmosphere is as you'd expect of an speakeasy...dimly lit and quiet. The bartenders were great and the cocktails are top notch; don't go expecting to get a beer. Highly recommend for a cocktail before dinner.

Best cocktails in town!

By 77jojo26 |

Loved this little gem of a place. We opted for the 3 course cocktail option, the drinks were incredible and by far the best cocktails I've ever had. The bar staff were friendly and had some fantastic stories. We ended up staying all night! Genuine speakeasy atmosphere!

A quiet night

By Joy W |

I was so excited to go back here, as I loved it on a previous trip a few years ago. We were literally the only people there for the first 45 minutes or so. However, the Warriors were playing in the Finals that night, so that might have been why it was so dead? Drinks were good, very strong. Both visits, they give you a dossier about a supposed possible murder that occurred at that location, but not really sure what to do with it? They didn’t seem to be hints, no actually mystery to solve, kind of seemed like a cool idea executed only part of the way as the serving staff didn’t really guide you what to do with the info

Very cool, casual spot

By metalkpretty1 |

Fantastic place, very casual, darkly lit, cozy little speakeasy. The cocktails were so, so good. I’d definitely recommend this place.

Fun and interesting spot!

By AndyECV |

Wife and I were in the city to see a musical and she had made reservations for us to check out this cool spot in the Tenderloin. We are pretty street savvy so the area and late hour didn't really concern as much as it probably should have but once there it was a very cool experience. While we were waiting for our Uber car in front of our hotel we met a couple on vacation from Atlanta and they ended up joining us... our reservations were only for two but went for it without notifying them ahead of our arrival that two more would be coming. We arrived at the door and the young lady that answered the door made no hesitation to accommodate the extras in our party. She also made sure the outside bouncer was near us anytime we were outside to keep the beggars and vagrants at bay from us. Inside was very dark and quiet. It had a really cool vibe and found that we will have to make a few more trips back to explore every hidden bar within the walls. Drinks are great and in line price wise for what they offer, and being in a large city like SF. The waitress was fantastic she gave the four of us a complete walk thru of the very extensive drink menu. I happened to spill a drink and she offered to replace it on the house... very kind and very unexpected. We had a great time and will be back to explore more of the other bars within. Definitely worth checking out if your looking for a great cocktail in SF.

'Be Careful What You Wish for!'

By Paul T |

I was recommended Bourbon and Branch by The Masses who Frequent 'Trip Advisor' as the Current Trend with 'Speakeasy' Bars has Suddenly become more Mainstream as I've been to Some Others Elsewhere in the UK and Germany. You have to make Advance Bookings in order to get 'The Password' to Enter Otherwise Likelihood is 'No Admittance'. Locating The Establishment is Not Difficult To Find 'Unmarked Door with Doorbell' as the 'Norm'. But A Couple Found The Bar around The Same Time As Ourselves and Just Turned Up with 'No Booking' and had ' No Password'. This Will Not Get You Entry Alone Just Finding the Bar. You Need 'The Password'. I Like The Bar. The Staff are Pretty and Courteous or They Were To Me and I Do Not Want To Give It 3 Stars as Delightful and Quirky and ' The Score' was based on 'The Experience As A Whole' because I 'Asked Prematurely as Only 1 Cocktail In at 'The Time"about the 'Other Bar'. But It Would Have Been Better to Have Been Forewarned Once you Choose 'This Option' Thats It Exits Only Through A Rear Door as Alternative Option once Inside 'The 'Other' Bar' I Think Was Called ' The Library'.The Cocktails are Lovely but I made the Mistake once Inside if there is Another Bar which there is and there is Nothing Wrong With it but You Cannot return to the Main Bar once Inside and 'The Cocktail Menu' is Also More Limited. It did not Particularly Bother Me as ' Happy To Stand'. But We had a Table for 2 Booked In The Main Bar Section for 2 Hours and was Not Told You Cannot Return and No Seating Room Available to Me After I had Entered ' The Other Bar' as It Was Already Full Seating Wise. My Wife was not Pleased as Expected as It Was Our 10th Anniversary Needless to Say 'She Chucked Her Toys Out Of The Pram' and did not want to have a Cocktail and Stand Around Once In as Nowhere to Sit. No Lady Luck or Sods Law Sprang to Mind. Transparency Once In Would have helped as The Young Lady Serving Almost Looked Surprised when I Asked About Another Bar, But She Just Said 'Yes There Is I Will Take You There And I will Close your Account In Main Bar First'. In My 'Subconcious' That Should Have Rang Alarm Bells but Thought Nothing Of It at The Time. A Little Bit Cheeky and A Bit Naughty on her Part for not Relaying this Info to Me. But Ultimately My Mistake as I Possibly Over Researched 'The Venue' and Was Ultimately My Downfall for The Evening as 'My Wife Was Annoyed and Upset as I Had 'Sacrificed My 'Table For Two' by this Conclusion of 'My Experience'. as 'In The Doghouse' With ' The Wife ' after this 'Outcome'. But as I say 'Be Careful What You Wish For'...

Great drink, but not at all a true speakeasy atmosphere

By SLSigafoos |

A friend and I booked well in advance to visit Bourbon & Branch on New Year's Eve as part of a week-long tour of restaurants up and down the California coast. We were excited to try what was advertised as a traditional speakeasy, and were intrigued by the number of rules they sent, which made the place seem exclusive and shrouded in mystery. The atmosphere was nothing like we expected. If you want a traditional bar, then by all means, go here. The drinks were great, and the prices were fair. However, decor was like any other bar (in fact, I've seen other bars decorated far nicer). The ambiance was dark, and loud. They were playing 90s boy bands. Chatter could be heard from every table and bar stool. There were people in there being given permission to take photos with their phones (e-mailed rules said no phones allowed). The drink menu slightly saved my impression of the place, so like I said, if you have no expectations of a true speakeasy and jazz age music, then this is your place. If you're expecting a speakeasy experience, there are others way ahead of this one on the list. The waitresses were also clearly not interested in asking us if we'd have more than one drink, either, so they also lost points there.

Awesome hidden bar

By Alex_19751 |

This bar is an awesome hidden prohibition era speak easy esque bar, it's quite hard to find, look out for the Anti-saloon league advertising board and then the non descript wooden door underneath. Entry is strictly via booking only and you need to give it name and the 'secret code-word'. Inside it's a very dark bar with a no mobile or photography policy which is refreshingly very nice. The drinks menu is great they serve some lovely cocktails and very thorough extensive list of bourbons and single malts. They play music fitting with what I would imagine the prohibition era would play and staff are dressed in 'peaky blinders' style clothing. When you have had a few nice drinks in here, pop next door to their sister bar 'The library' which is more casual and no bookings required. Both were very nice experiences. I would visit here again and recommend it to friends and family

Really cool spot

By Rachel R |

Found this place online over the weekend and really enjoyed it. Cool speakeasy vibe and solid cocktails. The "revolver" was my favorite. Fun place to check out.

Great cocktails but lacks service

By NAD2707 |

Had a reservation with set seating time for a few weeks so I found it pretty strange that we had stand in line outside for so long. A speakeasy is usually a bit more under the radar with staggered times to avoid long queues on the street. Our waitress gave no assistance with the huge menu even when we asked for input. Cocktails were good but cost not worth the below average service.

Delicious cocktails

By BeasleyE |

We visited Wilson and Wilson within Bourbon and Bach. The clandestine way you enter the premises adds to the whole experience. My husband isn't that keen on cocktails but after his visit here he's a convert. We ordered from the three course menu and we're sat at the bar which meant that we could speak to our bartender about the cocktails and identity which would suit our pallets. Each was delicious with flavours woven together expertly. The plans for a new cocktail menu and the regeneration of the original speakeasy in the basement mean that I would definitely visit again for their 10 year anniversary celebrations and at any other time that I might find myself in San Francisco. Even though we don't like whiskey ourselves the bar tender had an expert knowledge of them and the selection available would surely excite any whiskey lover.

Unique; a step back in time

By Michelle V |

Bourbon and Branch is a unique cocktail bar with a the unique added component of being a speak easy. We had our password and enjoyed strong cocktails in the dim lite rooms. What a fun step back in time to see what history lies there.....

Amazing, Exciting, Unique!

By Simo |

At our first day in SF we spent our evening at Bourbon and Branch. In fact, I don't need to say that much other than its just a great experience. This bar is so beautiful, its drinks so tasty and its staff so lovely. I don't want to spoil, so just go there. Thank you for this experience.

Kind of a let down

By pr7169 |

A lot of hype drew us into this place. The whole "Speakeasy" idea is kind of cool; you are given a password by text or email and then show up at the reserved time. But the inside is nothing much to speak of -- very dark, gigantic drink menu that is difficult to read, and the service is only so-so. Our waitress couldn't even find the Scotch we ordered, said they had no source of hot water for a hot toddy (which was our second choice), and we found the whole thing overpriced. We really wanted to like it, but wouldn't go back.

Worth a visit!

Book in advance as it gets booked up! You need a password to enter which they email you on booking! You also get a list of rules to follow! Staff are awesome! Drinks list is endless, ambience and decor are amazing! Cocktails are a must range from about $12 upwards! So worth it!

This is a hidden gem!

By MeeShellMidwifeRN |

This speak easy is a hidden gem! Must have a reservation and a password to enter through the unmarked wooden door. You will receive a list of rules including no cell phones or cameras. Dark and intimate, like going back in time! Bar menu (no food at all) has over 70 page menu with amazing and unique hand crafted cocktails, whiskey, bourbon, and other spirits. Fun time, should definitely give it a try!

Very unique place to get a drink...

By mjzalord |

Just a unique place all around, from the fact there is no sign out front, that you have a password to get in, to a menu that has hundred of drinks for you to choose from. Dimly lit, romantic spot. Highly recommend.

Fun Speakeasy-like Experience

By Joe R |

I'll be honest... This came near the end of a very long week in San Fran. A week full of very late nights and lots of schmoozing with potential customers. So, I wasn't in the right mindset for visiting the Wilson & Wilson Detective Agency at Bourbon & Branch. Nevertheless, I had a fantastic time! The mixologist was superb. He was knowledgeable, intelligent, unassuming, but also blunt and direct. He crafted interesting drinks and took pride in his art. I'll be certain to return to B&B to try a different room if I ever find myself back in San Francisco for a few days.

Pretentious and falls short.

By Ian F |

Note that this review is for Wilson & Wilson, which is within Bourbon & Branch. Sadly it doesn't seem to have its own entry. B&B still has a special place in my heart, though I haven't been to B&B proper -- I went back to try W&W. I wanted to like Wilson & Wilson, but it was pretentious and fell short. I wanted a flip, so the bartender recommended "Deadline at Dawn". It tasted unbalanced to me - the vanilla was too pronounced, and its aftertaste still lingers. To his credit, the bartender recognized I wasn't happy, and asked what he could do to make it right. Kudos. However, when I said I'd love to stick with a flip, and asked if I could get a rebel flip (they have a great bourbon selection) he said they only did drinks from the menu. I asked if he could re-make the drink without the vanilla infused bitters, and he said they "didn't do alterations". If you're Dandelyan or American Bar, you'd have perhaps earned the right to be that pretentious, but even at Dandelyan I've never been told "we don't do alterations" or "menu only". A great bar will work with you, explore what flavor profile you enjoy, and come up with something to match your desires. I've never had more fun than a night with Mikey Ball exploring some super creative drinks after we talked flavor profiles. This fell so horribly short. If you're going to stick to a strict menu and not allow any alterations, why don'y you just go ahead and batch it all. You might as well. tl;dr: I really wanted to like Wilson & Wilson. Nice space, nice ingredients behind the bar, but I left after 15 minutes and three sips of a drink.

Neat spot!

By monicaRN |

Cool spot to check out if you're into the speak-easy vibe and swanky, well made cocktails. This place has zero signage out front, just a door and a doorbell. You will need to make a reservation (we did so easily on Yelp about 45 min before arriving on a Thursday evening). They will confirm your reservation via email and give you a passcode, which will be required for entry to the bar. You'll be seated in an intimate booth, with VERY dim lighting. Their cocktail and spirits list is lengthy, but quite worth their high price tags. Definitely worth a visit!

Exquisite drinks!

By steviepandme |

When we first arrived, there was a small line, which took away from the cloak and dagger experience. When we got inside though, the atmosphere was very dark, literally. We couldn't see where we were sitting. Once our eyes adjusted to the dim lighting, we were greeted by a well informed and friendly waitress. Our drinks were out of this world! They were well prepared and well thought out. Don't ask for substitutions as I was told that they're specifically made with those specific ingredients. Some of the speakeasy rules didn't quite apply as some patrons were on the loud side. However, we had a fantastic time, and you will get your money's worth!

10/10 whiskey cocktails, 4/10 everything else

By CocktailFyre |

By the name you know what to expect. The bourbon cocktails may be the best I've ever had, and that was a shared opinion in our group. The bartender however was a bit of a jerk. Service was slow. The whole place had a smell that makes you wheezy. The whole song and dance to actually get in in the first place hits an early anti climax. But if you like a good bourbon, neat or in a cocktail, come here.

Not so speak easy but enjoyed it!

By jimuk530 |

Went here in June 2018. Love the concept which was well played out by our greeting host. We were then taken to our booth and provided with a menu by our server who explained it very well. I’m not a lover of cocktails but I chose one with Laphroig whisky which was very nice. My wife loves them so she was spoiled for choice. I then had to choose a Scottish Whisky flight which included a well chosen mix of drams at a reasonable price. After we were finished, we paid up and were taken into “The Library” which was a separate bar where you could continue drinking but it was quite busy with only one server behind the bar so after waiting a short time we left. The one complaint I have in the Speak Easy bar was it was too noisy. I didn’t expect that so either the concept ends after you get in or we were unlucky to be there with other noisy guests. I thought perhaps to maintain the mystery, a staff member might have the responsibility to maintain the “speak easy” concept as to enjoy that was one of the reasons we booked. That said, we enjoyed it and would recommend to others.

Unexceptional drinks, exceptional attitude

By Zoran S |

The pretentiousness of this place shows that the speakeasy trend has run out of steam ... sort of like a 40 minute prog rock ballad. Came here on a recommendation from several industry friends, only to be greeted with tremendous attitude. Asked to sit in a corner despite bar being empty. Unenthusiastic server went through routine spiel about menu then disappeared. Had to get up to order drinks which were OK, but not exceptional in any way. Finally seated at bar only to be insulted by rude maitre'd with bad teeth. Drinks in second Library room undrinkable. With so many great drinking options in town, spend your time and money elsewhere.

Amazing library bar but..

By jonathans1863 |

Great bar with amazing drinks but if you want a better a experience make a reservation for Wilson and Wilson and it’s a speakeasy connected to the same bar. Enjoy !

Exciting cocktails

By katnip_21f |

Make your reservations for this sexy speakeasy and enjoy some fabulous and creative cocktails. The cocktail menu is massive, grouped by primary liquor type, and runs the flavor spectrum from sweet to spicy to smoky and beyond. The atmosphere is sexy and intimate, but reservations are required.

enjoy prohibition with a cocktail in hand

By Kathryn R |

We really enjoyed visiting this place. We made a reservation and we were able to show up with our complete party and be taken into the bar area for some cocktails. The menu was a little daunting, but there was something on there for everyone and having all the ingredients listed helped everyone to make their choices even easier. Definitely a place to try out!

Drinks were ok, server was GARBAGE.

By Txrangers2012 |

Visited SF with 5 co-workers. All service industry. So I understand making the guest's experience as enjoyable as possible. That's how I make my money. If you have a good time, I have the best chance to be rewarded. Everything was going fine until the end. Asked for separate checks on a Monday night. At first we were told that they could only separate checks 4 ways evenly at the max. I questioned this asking--so there is no way we could just get our drinks on separate checks? Response and I quote "Well I could, but I'm not gonna." I would never ever tell a guest this. I might not like splitting a table's check. It might be a minor inconvenience. But in the grand scheme of things it really doesn't matter. This particular server should find a different career. She was a blemish on an otherwise great stop in SF.

Average bar with not much of an atmosphere

By dollyshols |

Went to Wilson and Wilson here after seeing it online as one of the best places to go. This bar is within the Tenderloin area which in itself is not great so best to get a cab there and back. You have to book and it gives the allure therefore as a selective place, the cocktails were nice, bit overpriced but theres not much of an atmosphere in this tiny bar

A place lost in time

By Dolores G |

We got to the "Wilson & Wilson Private Investigator" web page through a friend's recommendation. ..we booked our interview for 10 pm that day. We got to the indicated door ( no signes or refrences available in the outside) and a guy opened and asked for our names and ID's!!. as soon as we got in, we felt as travelling back in time...great place, an easy chat bar...We immediately loved it!..fancily decorated, the best set to get you in the appropriate mood. The cocktails list was just amazing! I think I read drinks that I didn't have idea that existed!! Ours, were sublime!! After we were done with our drinks, the waitress invited us to go to the "library "... what can I say... we just love this kind of places that invite you to play being somebody else in some other time and enjoying great drinks at the same time!!

The perfect date!

By Erin V |

My partner and I went here twice during our trip to SF. The first time we had drinks in The Library- you don't need to make a reservation, you just need to know the password. Service was amazing and the bar was dark and quiet. The drinks are out of this world! We went to the other bar inside the next night- Wilson and Wilson. We had a "full course cocktail meal' and were blown away. It was fun, sexy, and romantic!

1 Star For Both Of Us

By ElevenZeroSix |

So- it's empty inside at 7p. Except that is for a group of ladies that walk out just as I'm coming up to the door. It's just me- desiring to go to the bar for Pappy Van Winkle as I am in town for a few days and heard this is the place to go for it in San Francisco. No- I don't have a reservation. But I figure what's the harm in asking to be let in anyway to get my Pappy fix. Guy at the door says they are not accepting walk-ins. Ladies turn and look at me and say without my prompting them "hey let him in it's completely empty inside". Door guy says "no we're not accepting walk-ins today sorry". So I get one star for not getting a reservation, but you also get one star Bourbon & Branch for taking yourselves way too seriously. Hope that works out for you. Oh and folks, turns out the Union Square Hilton right around the corner has almost all Pappy vintages along with some pretty good other selections at the top floor Cityscape bar. Awesome view as well.

Fun and Boozy!

By Carol L |

This "speakeasy" was a blast! There's a password and a doorman and the interior is dim and old worldy. Cocktails are great and staff knowledgable. Loved the decor. Be sure to book!

Unbelievable cocktail list!

By Katie T |

Go prepared to read the cocktail list for 20 minutes to pick something out! The waitress was good in explaining the menu. Wished they offered small plates. The atmosphere was dark and very vintage speakeasy. Cocktails a very reasonable $12-15each. Would definitely return and it was easy to find, but the doorbell and password added to the secrecy!

Something unexpected and greatly enjoyed.

By Lance_Wanderweg |

Don't look for a sign as there isn't one. Reservations are required and fill up quickly on the weekends. However, if you plan ahead and get that coveted reservation along with the requisite password, you will be rewarded with an enchanting experience. Stepping through the weathered door at 501 Jones leads you into a 1920's time capsule. The customers speak softly and the drinks are crafted and served with pride. My wife had no inkling of the where we would be enjoying a drink after a show and was thoroughly surprised and enchanted by what we found. The lighting is dim and the booths are cozy, but that all adds to the experience. Our server was well versed with the extensive cocktail menu and made two wonderful recommendations. The drinks themselves were fantastic. This is a place to unwind, relax, and engage in an uninterrupted conversation. Keep the cell phone off and enjoy your companions.

Unique Spot with great drinks!

By Amy E |

We loved this place! Great vibe and even better drinks. Felt very authentic prohibition era! I tried 2 drinks from their Au courant section which updates frequently. Try the "seersucker"! The area of town was a little rough but it was worth the trip to try something different! Make a reservation and go! :)

Perfect start to the evening

By Emz5 |

It's dark and you have to read the extensive menu by a small light but the atmosphere is brilliant. Not located in the best of areas so be prepared to get a little hassle whilst waiting to go inside. The bar staff are attentive, funky and know their stuff. We managed three cocktails each and each one was sublime. What I really like about this place is there are no phones allowed so people have to talk to each other! Imagine that. Definitely recommend if you like somewhere off the beaten track and isn't full of pretentious folk.

Violence

By Nicola F |

We were recommended the bar by some colleagues who are local. And we loved it on arrival - quiet but buzzy, lovely barman and great drinks. Sadly though, all that was lovely inside doesn't make up for the horrendous scene I witnessed outside. I'm aware that this part of San Francisco has developed a dreadful problem with homelessness. I'm not local, so I don't understand how this came about and the impacts. However, nothing excuses testosterone fuelled violence. While I was outside I saw a member of staff not just knock down a guy for a reason unknown, but continue to punch and kick him once he was down. And then wear his 'success' like a peacock to the rest of the staff. This was the most distasteful part. The male staff universally seemed to be amused and proud of their colleague. I was appalled. We left immediately afterwards.

Brilliant Hidden Gem

By shanlin123 |

Fantastic bar hidden from view just the way a speakeasy should be. Don't order a Cosmo and be ready for umbrella free cocktails that taste AMAZING. Secret rooms, great staff and interesting menu. One for the adventurous 😊

Great little San Francisco experience

By Marc |

Visited B&B last month on my Birthday with my wife for a couple cocktails before we headed out for supper. Overall was a great experience, it’s nice to do something a little different once in a while and this was just that! Wasn’t sure how the “house rules” would go over but it plays well into the whole experience they are going for. Our waiter was friendly and knowledgeable and could see the bartender putting a lot of effort and talent into the cocktails we had ordered. Would go back for sure and recommend to friends. lol below it says “upload photos” Well we followed the rules and left our phone/camera out of our hands for the entire visit.

Brilliant concept, great cocktails, just could have played on th speakeasy theme a bit more

By stu2303 |

We read up about this in advance and were very excited about a real speakeasy experience - giving a password on the door to get in, hiding in what looks like an empty building, having amazing cocktails - sounded totally cool. To a large extent it was - the cocktails were brilliant and service lovely. However the door staff didn't really play the role at all when they asked for the password, so lost a bit of the magic there, then people kept going in and out of the emergency exit from the room we were in, which again you wouldn't do in a speakeasy. If they had paid a bit more attention to detail, this would have been an amazing 5 star experience, so it was slightly disappointing. Still though, a brilliant adventure.

A Highlight of our trip to SF

By Mypo |

From getting the password , to finding the venue, this place was a delight, The atmosphere was dark and dusty and secretive just as it should have been. The drinks menu was vast but our waitress guided us through and we had some wonderful drinks. Loved it Loved it

Just a gimmick

By Helmut |

The drinks are pretty average compared to other bars around the globe I have been to. Not being able to read the menu because the lights are set to 'basically off' gets pretty old, too. Reserving for 7 to be told that the table only fits 6 (and that would be 6 skinny people) reeks either of arrogance or incompetence. I want good drinks in a pleasant ambience, not Disneyland. Not going back...

Kewl Speakeasy Bar in SF

By Jaime O |

If your in SF and you want to visit a bar with a speak easy feel to it then visit Bourbon and Branch....you must RSVP the place gets crowded even on a Monday. There is another secret bar within the bar which you need to RSVP also if you would like to go but that bar is open on certain days. We also had a drink in there library.....cool place.

Awesome cocktails in fun atmospherr

By Hitcher84 |

Went to Wilson and Wilson, which is part of this set of bars. Reservations are highly recommended. The bar was relatively small, maybe 20 seats. We each had a cocktail flight. All the cocktails were delicious with lots of different flavors. Had the Maltese Falcon, Red Sciarrone, and Charlie Chan. Three cocktails for $35 or so. Not a bad deal. We were there for about two hours. It was fun watching them make the cocktails, many of which were made with spray bottles, eye droppers, and one with a lighter. No food or snacks here. They also have an extensive liquor list, especially whiskeys. Many were over $100 for a 2 ounce pour, but they also had several for $12-15 per pour that looked interesting. I would definitely recommend and would like to come back and try more cocktails.

Fun place with greak drinks

By Jason V |

Their twist is they are trying to be era-specific about the liquors. They say Bourbon wasn't drunk much and that they have few selections of it. Thus she suggested a Whiskey-based drink. She nailed the first drink, but the next mint-julep-inspired drink was a hit and a miss--not terrible but just not great. Still, good to try something new. Look at your spam folder for the confirmation, because that's where the password went for me. Worst-case is you ring the bell and give them your last name from your reservation.

Secretive and Fun!

By Sean F |

This place is not your normal bar. It is hidden, quiet and the cocktails are works of art. The idea behind the experience is to have you step back in time to a forgotten era when having a drink was actually illegal! Bourbon and Branch nails it! The start out, you must make a reservation. When you do an email is sent out confirming your spot, providing the address as well as your password. No password- No entry. Upon entering you really feel like you have stepped back in time to some hidden room. 20's music plays, the atmosphere is dark and quiet ( cell phones are not allowed). We got lucky and Manny was our bartender. Clearly a master of his craft, he expertly prepared our drinks and never let us down. Each drink was delicious and unique, truly something not experienced in a regular bar. If your in the Bay Area and would like to try something new I highly suggest Bourbon and Branch. It is an experience that you will not soon forget. Also, for all you history buffs out there, Bourbon and Branch was actually a real speakeasy during the prohibition era! Lastly, this place does not serve beer or things like Jack & Coke. These are craft cocktails so if you go be prepared to try something NEW.

Fun little drink spot!

By Clint M |

I popped in for a cocktail one night by myself. Very cool history of the building and the speakeasy. I'd love to go back next time I'm in town. Delicious coctails as well.

Fantastic!

By emily116 |

Fantastic experience! We arrived at an unmarked door at 11pm for our reservation. Expect to use a password to enter. It's quaint and quiet with lots of secret rooms and passages. We felt as if for a moment we were back in the 1920's. They have a very extensive drink menu. Don't plan on ordering a Cosmo or rum and coke. Try the Gypsy or Louisville Slugger. They have a cool "library"bar where I believe you can go without reservations, however, trust me, you'll have more fun in a hidden room of theirs, so get reservations! I will definitely go back!

Bourbon and Branch Pre-dinner cocktails!

By igor5959 |

Tried this establishment out and had a good time. Some serious whiskey/bourbon selections; as well as scotch and tequila. Our server Katie was able to guide my wine quaffing wife to a couple of different cocktails which she enjoyed. I had a couple different bourbon drinks that were tasty and potent. Try the "Heavy Artillery". Spent about $15 per drink, but they had a lot going on and bartenders took some time to prepare so we thought it was worth it. Probably about what you'd pay at your hotel bar but much better. Reservations needed, they open at 6. We got there about 10 till..and had a good 15 or so people behind us by the time the door cracked open and we were asked for our password. It's in the Tenderloin, so a little scruffy but not like old Tenderloin. Stepping into bar from street, you won't be able to see squat for a few minutes until your eyes adjust. It's a neat little joint. Got an Uber in 90 secs to our dinner reservation upon leaving. No standing at bar, and you are restricted to 90 minutes there. Cell phones OFF.

The emperor's new bar?

By Nick P |

Went here after work with a group of about 10 for drinks.... Usual as reported entry procedure knock on door give password - nice gimmick. Pros - cool and very tasty cocktails, staff super friendly Cons - has forgotten what the place actually is.... Somewhere to get a drink. We arrived before 6pm and we here the first group through the door. Only 10 of us it was 6:40pm before the last person actually had their drink in the library bar. Felt really bad for the other groups one of 6 and another of 4 that walked in with us because they would have waited for an hour for their first drink. Overall nice experience but possibly more hype than substance.

The speakeasy inside a speakeasy: best cocktails I've had

By Chris L |

We got a reservation for "Wilson & Wilson Detective Agency", the speakeasy hidden in the back of the speakeasy "Bourbon & Branch". Oil lamps, no cell phones, please keep your voices down, velvet wallpaper: a carefully cultured environment that contributed to my pleasure in having elaborate cocktails. You get an hour-and-half and they turn you out, so it's very much a contained experience, but you also get good attention from your server. The service was excellent, and the cocktails were stellar: layered flavors and inventive combinations. The seats are the bar are cluttered with wood at knee height, so I found the seating uncomfortable, so I happily stood for our spell there. In the Tenderloin in 2018, so watch where you step on the way in.

Wonderful, artful bar with a fantastic cocktail menu

By Herbie51 |

We found the Bourbon and Branch on Atlas Obscura and it suggested the prohibition speak easy set up for a different bar experience. We were not disappointed. I have been back twice and enjoyed the ambiance, the service and the drinks. If you go online to the web site you will be provided with an opportunity to make a reservation. When you reserve you get a password that will give you access to the club. Once you are in you are ushered back to a time when drinking was not something you were supposed to do. It really is set up as a prohibition era establishment complete with rotating book shelves, basement spirit basins and a false front to fool the alcohol police. Lots of fun and a really extensive menu of cocktails made by really good bartenders. A great stop when you have some time to kill but go online to make your reservation. You will disappointed if you just show up and try to gain access.

very good

By Ema H |

I booked this for my husband and we loved it. Dont forget your ID or you will not be allowed in - luckily we were literally in the hotel round the corner so i nipped back and they let us straight in. You need to book in too - cant just wander up and get in. The cocktails are expensive but you can only stay 1.5 hrs anyway. The atmosphere was excellent - certainly would recommend. (they don't do food - just cocktails)

Cool craft saloon

By gdclark |

I was in San Francisco for a meeting and stayed at the Westin St. Francis in Union Square. I had seen this previously when taxiing to the airport. There is an intriguing sign for the Anti Saloon League, which prompted an internet search and voila, Bourbon and Branch found! Others obviously know about this wonderful establishment as I am as unable to get reservations but was able to get into the library on a Friday night. Neighborhood seems a bit iffy, but since there was a line to get in, I felt safe. Inside the library are standing tables, a bar, and a few seating areas. It was packed on a Friday PM. After a wait at the bar, I ordered an old fashion with Michter bourbon. It was one of the best old fashions I have had. The crowd was young and apparently well-off. It was a courteous, friendly group but not quiet as I read about on their website. Old fashion was about $15; given the quality and size, this seemed appropriate. Overall, I would consider this a find and will be back!

Fun, speakeasy and dark!

By Keven O |

My wife, daughter and her husband all visited on a Saturday night in January. It's not too hard to find as some might lead you to believe. Just look for the "anti-saloon league" sign on the corner. The imposing bouncer by the unmarked door will tell you you're in the right place. One of servers comes to the door, takes your name and the password (reservations are a must for he speakeasy) and quickly disappears leaving you on the sidewalk for a moment. She returns and invites you in. There are maybe 6 tables. The room is very dark. The tables are small, barely seating the four of us. The cocktail menu is extensive. There are no traditional cocktails on the menu although I suspect they would make you anything you wanted. We each ordered 2 drinks. All of them were made with premium ingredients and tasted great. Our server was knowledgeable. I told her what type of drinks each of us liked and she recommended the right one for each of us. There was no rush. We sat for almost 90 minutes dipping and talking. The only complaint would be the noise from the adjoining bar which was a little off putting with the ambiance of the speakeasy. Highly recommended for something different.

Good cocktail bar

By Hayley D |

Make sure you make a reservation and get the password!! Going to the effort will be well worth it. Bar tenders are lovely and know their mixology!!

Amazing Artisan Cocktails

By goislands |

i visited on a week night - pleasantly busy crowd - but perfect night to sit on a bar seat directly in front of the bartender (who happened to be the GM and an amazing craft mixologist). He not only made me two drinks which were a perfect fit for my picky palate. It was really an absolutely amazing experience to watch him mix over 100 cocktails from memory, measuring every ingredient to specific 1/4 ounce increments. Get a reservation and enjoy the fun of a throw back speakeasy with the character of San Fran and truly amazing cocktails on par with any world class cocktail lounge. Great work team!

Best speakeasy experience

By Dennis D |

Great experience, as they focus on the unique and secretive experience I won’t go into too much detail. The experience is entertaining, focusing on the speakeasy style, as you can only enter though a password and by following specific house rules. The bartenders are friendly and very experienced, the environment is calm and relaxing. A must go and comfortable, tasteful night out.

Spectacular service and drink offering

By Justin M |

This was a fun speakeasy experience. Once you get in, the bartenders are friendly and knowledgeable. The atmosphere is divine. The "no photos" rule makes for a great vibe inside. I appreciated feeling like I was personally being taken care of, and like I was valued as a customer.

A lot of Drinks....

By Olga R |

If you are looking for a unique drinking place. This would be one. It has an extensive drink menu. Over 40 pages! Too many to chose from. Staff was a bit harsh, not sure if that's the atmosphere they were going for. I would consider this a "checked it off my list" item. Not sure I would go again.

Speakeasy experience

By BooBuskano |

I love bespoke cocktails. I make my own at home. On our visit to San Fran, we decided to check this place out after dinner. We did not reserve so we were ushered to the Library, gave the doorman the password and were let in. The room was perfect. Right down to the tin ceiling and 20s jazz playing. The cocktails were very well done. Perfectly balanced. I always ask bartenders to make me something they think I would enjoy. My hope is they will try something off menu. The only (very small) thing that was lacking was more of a sense of adventure by our bartender. A very small complaint but it would have pushed me to 5 stars. Definitely will come back.

The Best Cocktails

By cferrufino |

This speakeasy styled bar (no food, just carefully crafted cocktails) goes all the way. The decor is intimate. The drinks are creative and varied. The cocktail list is pretty substantial, presented in a format that organizes the drinks by type (flights, over ice, fruity, etc.), and within the types, they show their takes on the classics (e.g. Manhattan's) vs. B&B inventions. I took my husband here for his birthday, and we were not disappointed. The drinks were perfection -- served as described. They were creative and well executed. The ambiance is dark, quiet in terms of crowd noise (at least while we were there, which was perfect for talking), with great music adding to the speakeasy feel. Service was optimal. Prices were moderate, and dare I say, even on the lower end considering the complexity of the drinks, especially when compared to other establishments in SF. We're looking forward to going back the next time we're in SF.

Amazing hidden gem

Fancy speakeasy, great service and even better drinks. We had a great time there, greatly recommended! No pics, no smartphones, just enjoy your time there.

Awesome “speakeasy” type cocktail bar but . . .

By TheScottRose |

The feel and vibe is great. The whole “password to get in” and location in the seedy Tenderloin adds to it. Each cocktail was top notch. My only complaint would be the attitude of our server. He looked like the lead guy from Pitch Perfect and was not very friendly. Now the extra info you need to know. The main bar (the one requiring the password) is not really a bar but rather a collection of tables that seat 4. There is NO bar / lounge atmosphere or mingling of any sort. It’s true speakeasy - when you had to hide your presence. But no worries. That is all fixed by passing thru the secret “wall” of books into the Library. Much more like a bar. It’s open and they make most of the same drinks. There is a side entrance directly into this part but then you would miss the secret door. I didn’t get to visit the detective agency part or the underground. Maybe next time. Don’t be put off by the location (although be careful when you exit into that area). Enjoy.

Love it

Got a reservation and had the secret instructions. Interior was pretty cool and drinks were awesome. Pricey but very nice

Ok speakeasy

By lchez55 |

Ok speakeasy with good cocktails. Music is way to loud. Drop the volume and change to jazz maybe and it's a happening spot. I like the spot but feet they are trying too hard

Birthday party

By Nelda W |

My daughter rented the back room of this place for her birthday, it was so fun, We all dress in our flapper dresses and enjoyed drinks and appetizers. It does not look like much on the outside but when you go in it's like stepping back in time. Oh don't forget to get your password to get in.

Fun Speakeasy

By annarc6 |

I’ve never been to a place like this, and it was fun. You must have a reservation, and you are given a time to come and a time to leave. There were pages and pages of specialty drinks. I had to tell my server what type of drinks I liked, and he selected for me. They were great! No cell phones allowed—I wish more places had that same rule! No food. Just drinks!

Great place

By Tiffine |

Drink selection and staff are nice. Takes a little extra planning because you need to book ahead but well worth it!

Unusual experience

By Gill |

We had not made a reservation and so we went to the bar not the restaurant area. It was an interesting experience. They do not do any non alcoholic beer but they did a great ginger ale. The location is not in the most salubrious area of the city

Pretentious speakeasy slightly hard to find. Make sure you are paying attention or you will walk past. Great cocktails

A quiet reprieve from the San Francisco hustle-and-bustle

By Laurel M |

My husband and I are calling this "the bar for introverts". We made reservations and stopped by on our recent anniversary weekend celebration. We thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere and "speaking easy" in the dimly lit corner table we were given to enjoy our drinks. The drinks are priced well and there is a wonderful variety of "old-school" cocktails available. Our waitress gave us an excellent overview of the extensive menu. We will definitely be back!

71 year old refused entry as no ID !!!

By AlisonS917 |

We arrived promptly at 6 pm and duly gave the password for our booking. We were a party of 5 visiting from the UK and this bar came recommended. Initially we had to wait for an extra 5 minutes because they hadn't finished setting up for the evening and then another 5 minutes because they had to get the music working. When they were finally ready to let us in the one person in our party without ID was 71 years old and was refused entry as she was unable to "prove" her age. As tourists we don't routinely carry our passports around with us and the 71 year old was not driving in the USA so didn't have a driving license with her. This was patently ridiculous and we quite happily went elsewhere and spent an obscene amount of money at a different bar. The lack of common sense approach in this case = 1 star. Flattering but absolutely ridiculous.

Fun

By David W |

We went to this venue and ore booked the Wilson and Wilson bar at the back. The place is decorated well and the cocktails were amazing and very strong. The bartender was very friendly and really knows his craft. The bar had a great atmosphere and they do 3 cocktails for $35 each one getting stronger. This is a great place to go to do something a little different. Make sure that everyone in your party has ID or they will not get in.

Fun Speakeasy Theme

By Loves2Travel2gether |

A family member and I discovered this place after asking at another nearby drinking establishment. We had drinks in a room that is apparently sort of an "annex" to the main speakeasy that they call "The Library." We had no reservations, no passwords, etc., but must have hit it at the right time because we were admitted right away. Quiet, dimly lit, what looked like a number of premium cocktails but also a great assortment of quality bourbons and scotches. I found this to be a pleasant change of pace to some of the other drinking establishments in SF because you could actually have a conversation without having to shout at other members of your party. This isn't a place to come for cheap drinks -- fine beverages served in a great atmosphere, and priced accordingly.

Slightly pretentious

By Elizabeth P |

Looking forward to this but let down by the doorman attitude. We were given a password for entry he informed us to go round the corner 2nd door left. Next doorman was very pleasant let us enter a dimly lit although great decor bar area. This seemed pleasant until our 1st doorman appeared through one of the locked doors apparently from the area we had just been refused entry he proceeded to approach 2 different couples and take them through to the other area. We finished our drinks and left rather spend our dollars in somewere we felt welcome

Over Hyped

By Michael B |

Sorry but the place is over hyped , they have a good idea however it's very dim inside and I guess they are trying to make the feel of a speakeasy, I understand the concept but the drinks are over priced and the 2 guys at the door don't fit the bill for an old speakeasy. We went there because a bartender from close asked if we had been there to see so we left his place to check kit out, had one drink and immediately headed back to where we were , better atmosphere and drinks, no need to mention the place as it's not important , bourbon and branch is is ok for a quick stop to check it out is all , you will get bored.

back to prohibition era

By Walter H |

You really need to know the address in order to find the door. The bartender is very pro, and list of cocktails is impressive. The quality is good as well. Worth visiting, but I wonder what you need to do in order to get to the other side of the inside door? was not even in a mood to find out that time, but look for it.

A Fun SF Experience

By Catherine-Rose M |

Bourbon and Branch offers a very unique and fun atmosphere! A very authentic speak easy feel and excellent cocktails. I booked the reservation online several weeks in advance, and would recommend anyone do the same. You will receive a password and a list of rules to follow. The service was good at a very enjoyable slow pace. I did wish our server had a bit more knowledge of each drink and its contents. As I mentioned there were several rules (no cell phones, pictures, etc.), my one disappointment was that a large group was not following the no camera and "speak easy" rules and became very disruptive. Eventually they were asked by staff to obey the rules. Although I wish there were a few snack options on the menu, B&B is a definite San Fran must!

Romantix

By COEyeDoc |

Visiting the city for a romantic weekend and this served as a delightful apres-dinner drink location late one night. Reservations are a must and just the fact that you have to plan your night in advance is a romantic touch for a long time couple. The atmosphere is VERY relaxed and you will have the background for a very intimate conversation and sensual drinking experience as the cocktails are sublime and the choices are made from only the best liquors. An hour here is plenty after a long dinner. Contrary to other reviews, I felt the surrounding neighborhood was just fine but having grown up in a city may make me bias. Enjoy this and share with those you feel will treasure this old school gem. Seems simple but would have given 5 stars if they had minimal bar snacks like nuts or pretzels - some of us need food to make our alcohol go down smoother.

Great drinks in a quiet escape!

By Jessie E |

The drinks were excellent quality at a shockingly reasonable price (especially for SF). They have an extensive menu of classic and prohibition-style cocktails and the mixologist made some great recommendations. Be careful if going alone/at night. It’s on the edge of a questionable neighborhood.

Second visit!

By Elyssa M |

Being from DC with some really cool speakeasy bars, this does lack the cool secretive feel as there is usually a line outside. You will need to make a reservation in advance if you want a table. We were seated on time and our waitress was very attentive. Her drink recommendations were a bit off based off our tastes. I requested floral and my cocktail was rather sour. In other speakeasy bars, they custom make cocktails but here they very much stick to the menu. It’s a cool vibe though and the drinks are rather strong, just be firm in your taste preference and ask questions.

Novel concept. Superior cocktails for the adventurous.

By AlwaysUpForGoodFood |

I wasn’t sure about the no phones and the 90 minutes for the reservation but I was glad we experienced this unique place. It’s for the cocktail enthusiast or bourbon aficionado. The menu was daunting but the bartenders were very helpful. We enjoyed watching the cocktails being made at our bar seats which was more appealing than a table with a waitress; many ingredients went into each drink and were well shaken. We got the last two slots but the place was pretty empty for the second half of our stay. I couldn’t handle a third cocktail to get the 3 drink discount. My favorite was the Pinkerton. I would recommend going once, some may like it often, but for me, once was very good but enough. Good if you want to talk. Hooks for handbags but didn’t see anything for coats.

A great speakeasy

By lm55417 |

Wilson and Wilson Detective Agency is the speakeasy side of Bourbon and Branch. Reservations are required and they do limit the number of people who can enter which is refreshing so it's not crowded or loud. The cocktails were all fantastic and the service was good. Our only two complaints would be the table we sat at was facing the window - which you can't see out of - instead of facing the bar. And the stools are HORRIBLE. They're not comfortable and they are difficult to move. Would go back anytime I'm in SF again.

Great cocktails!

By B3achL0v3R86 |

The only open reservation for Bourbon & Branch was for 11:30pm. After Yelp told us to also check out Wilson & Wilson, we were able to make reservations there for 10:30pm. SO glad we did that. Wilson & Wilson has all the bourbons your heart has ever desired. From the Antique Collection to all the Pappy's, the selection of rare liquor alone should draw you here. Complete with the speakeasy vibe, fantastic cocktail selections (3 for $36), and great bartenders (we had Mo last night), Wilson & Wilson is my cocktail heaven. We ended up canceling our reservation for B&B so we could just stay here and sip the night away. PS: always belly up to the bar!

Super cocktails and authentic atmosphere

By Pebbles111 |

Lovely traditional, speak easy style cocktail bar. Booking is required as numbers are limited and a password is requested to gain entry. Interesting, candle lit decor. It is really dark inside which adds to the atmosphere however, because of the dim light I could not read the cocktail menu at all and had to get someone to read it to me! Mobile phones are strictly not allowed so I couldn't even use my torch for some light. A bit embarrassing. Super cocktails especially the signature Gin Gimlet and reasonably priced for a US City. Overall, a lovely evening and a great experience...

Quirky bar, amazing cocktails- speak easy!

By Reena000 |

This is a must for SF! It looks like it's in a dodgy area combined with no obvious signage ( playing on the 1920s prohibition theme) but don't let this put you off. From booking an table, to finding and knocking on a random door to providing ID and a password for entry, this place is just so quirky! Once in, the bar is stunning, so dark and moody- loved it. Loved the cocktails even more- the Barney Barnato is just delicious.

Wilson & Wilson Detective Agency - must book

By Kevan W |

Inside Bourbon & Branch is a ‘speakeasy’ within a ‘speakeasy’ - Wilson & Wilson Detective Agency, which is only accessible by secret password. You have to book in advance, there are limited numbers allowed into this inner sanctum (about 20) and you can only get an hour and a half slot; and every minute was a superb experience. You can get a discount if you order three cocktails from a menu - an Aperitif; Main; then a Digestif. I ordered: Aperitif - ‘The Maltese Falcon’ - Perry’s Tot Gin, white sugar, lemon, aperol, lemongrass, sparkling wine & sesame oil - very, very smooth and a perfect Aperitif. Main - ‘Strangers on a Train’ - pineapple dickel Rye, Roobois rum, lemon, dry vermouth, honey, angostura and kaffir - very decadent. Digestif - ‘Pinkerton Knob Creek bourbon, coffee, cranberry orange, angostura & tobacco- mind blowingly good. All of the above were crafty by the exceptionally talented Didi who was a true artist in her craft of making cocktails. Whilst you are inside Wilson & Wilson there are rules re no photos, no phones and how long you can stay. Before my time was up I was determined to have a good Bourbon, so after some excellent advice I decided upon the once in a lifetime experience of Colonel E H Taylor Warehouse C Tornado Surviving 1st and only barrel bourbon from Leestown Kentucky; the bourbon in this barrel survived a direct tornado strike on the distillery in 1881, so despite the huge choice of bourbons to choose from, this had to be the one. WOW - I have never tasted anything so sublime in all my life and am very unlikely to ever again. It was burnt cinnamon, Demerara sugar, maple syrup, brown butter, toasted wood and candles orange all blended together like soft maple. Alongside my tasting glass I was offered a small container of distilled water to add drop by drop with a small pipette; but there was no way I wanted to dilute this nectar in any way. Funny thing, having ordered my Colonel E H Taylor bourbon I was allowed to stay as long as I wanted and also allowed to openly take pictures. Not only was the bourbon totally off the scale of anything I’ve ever had before, the whole experience in Wilson & Wilson is one I will treasure very fondly.

Hidden Gem

By Hayley H |

If you like dimly lit, cosy hidden bars, this is a must. There is another bar within this bar, but you to reserve this prior to visiting. However if you can find this bar, it’s worth a visit. It’s like stepping back into the prohibition era.

Great fun!

By Richard E |

We read about this Speakeasy before visiting which made it all the more interesting. Great decor and extensive drinks list so you really will be spoilt for choice. The service was really quick and the staff were really helpful. I felt that the drinks were reasonably priced and great quality. What we didn’t know was that you could pass through a secret door into the library next door which is also a Speakeasy. All this was great fun and highly recommended.

Amazing Speakeasy in SF

By James P |

Top notch speakeasy in SF with excellent bourbon offerings. Some of the best whisky cocktails I've ever had with a wonderful ambiance to match. Even if you're not the biggest whisky fan, there is a drink for everyone here.

Very Cool Atmosphere

By Sherry B |

We loved being asked for the password, and having our IDs checked. A very cool dim candle lit interior with a dazzling 70+ page menu. Our server walked us through it, he was nice and kept his distance. We selected a Bourbon flight $24 and a “free range” sour drink $12. A pricey afternoon for us but a fun tome. It is very dim inside so it’s fun to watch newcomers try and find their way. The only negative is that there is no second entry so every time the door open a very bright shaft of light comes in, a velvet curtain would be cool, and a little snack as simple as nuts, cheeses or olives would be a nice addition.

Wilson and Wilson.... Great experience

By Johnny O |

Wilson and Wilson, which is a separate room within the Bourbon and Branch bar, was a great experience. You need reservations and a "password" to get in. This is a cocktail bar that focuses on the craft of the cocktail. This isn't your regular bar with crappy alcohol. DD and DJ were the bartenders when we went. They are well versed in different drinks, different brands, what each brand tastes like, etc. Amazing level of experience. I appreciated the great experience, conversation, and quality of service they provided. Do yourself a favor and try this. After our experience we were walked into a different room, the "Library" bar. Had to go through a door after pulling on a library book! Really cool.

Whispers of Whiskey

By LA Art Advisor |

Such an AMAZING experience! You whisper a word that opens a door, and walk back in time to the 1920s. The rooms of the bar are deeply dark, so dark that you almost miss the red velvet wallpaper lining the walls. The menu of craft cocktails was almost overwhelming, but we were gently guided by our wonderful waitress who’s knowledge was unparalleled. The list of top tier spirits was impressively curated and each drink was masterfully composed. This was indeed a true “speakeasy” experience that I highly recommend. Helpful Tips: - There are 2 sides of this establishment. “Bourbon & Branch” is the speakeasy that requires a reservation and password. “The Library” is the regular bar that is open to the public if you do not have a reservation. - You need a reservation for the speakeasy. I recommend getting a reservation as soon as possible because even a week out they may be booked.

Great atmosphere, and awesome drinks!

By Sondra W |

I love this place. The atmosphere is set back in Speakeasy times, and to get you in the mood, lays out rules. My favorite rule is no cell phone. The drink menu is a bit intiminating at first glance, but once you understand it, you can navigate fairly quickly. The atmosphere is dark, and the music sets you back in time. The drinks are wonderful. The flavors that come through are exactly how described. I really enjoyed the whole experience.

Great concept beautiful bar slipped a little

By Andy C |

Read trip advisor and decided to take my wife for a gourmet cocktail evening. Loved the concept and the bar looked great but it was late on a Tuesday evening. We booked 11:30 and the email explained the ins and outs, patience for drinks custom made and quiet with no phones, loved this. Waitress was attentive to start and briefly explained the drinks menu but then left to browse and choose. Would have liked more individual attention to help us choose a cocktail since we didn’t get it quite right to start so then moved onto straight whisky and straight rum. Took long time to find our whisky, forgot ice, no major. But then just gave us the bill at 12:30 only 1 hour into our time slot, no explanation. Lady behind the bar at this stage was engaging with a group of friends talking very loudly whilst standing at the bar. Against the mantra of the bar, one girl was very loud and then we just paid and left. Nice place good potential just let us down a little, felt like they gave the concept lip service late on a Tuesday. Will probably try again earlier when next in SF.

I bet it wasn't this difficult in the 20s!

By Bridget W |

I visited San Francisco recently and researched some bars in the city to check out while I was there. I've always enjoyed the idea of prohibition era and especially the speakeasies of the time. When I learned about bourbon and branch I thought this could be a unique experience to relive the days of old of backstreet drinking dens and the roaring 20s. We booked our time slot for the bar on line which in hindsight was not really in keeping with the prohibition rules of etiquette but such is the world we live in. I got the time slot and the password and thought this was all part of entering into the spirt of it. What really killed the experience for me was being refused entry at the door for not bringing ID. As a 35 year old tourist from Europe the days of being carded are unfortunately long behind me but being carded at a speakeasy was a real buzz kill.  I do understand the "rules" however it really did take away from experience I was hoping to get from such an establishment.

Wilson & Wilson

By a5c3e |

My husband and I made reservations online for a late night drink at Wilson and Wilson, a smaller bar within Bourbon and Branch. My husband took advantage of a deal where you select 3 cocktails from a listed menu for a fixed price. I had one cocktail then selected a tequila to sip for the rest of the evening. The ambiance is perfect, and the drinks are amazing. It was enthralling watching each of the bartenders create the many different cocktails. They were extremely knowledgeable yet offered no condescension. It was a great experience and we would love to return again soon.

A brilliant night out

By glasgowlassy82 |

What a fun night! Everything we expected and more with wonderful cocktails and surprises along the way. Staff fantastic and even met a fellow Scottish barman along the way. Huge thanks again for fun night.

Excellent cocktails

By lovestotravel177 |

Bourbon and Branch did not disappoint! From the secret password required at the door to the impressive drink list, this place is a must-see while in San Francisco. I had the tequila flight and it was excellent. One tip, take an Uber or Lyft there because the area is a bit sketchy and you might not want to leave your car outside.

So cool!

By sunny0402 |

This place is so cool. Love how sketchy we felt ringing the buzzer and giving our secret password to get in the door. The cocktails were delicious!!! (I tried an egg white cocktail for the first time and..YUM!) The atmosphere was awesome..This place is great!!!!

shhhh...it's a speakeasy

By anita e |

Beautiful decor, secret rooms and divine beverages make this place a hip hangout for a night out. Loved it!

Neat experience, but have had better drinks

By e_swanson86 |

The experience was fun and for that... I would recommend it for someone to try. The drinks were expensive and not the best tasting. In my opinion they tried too much artistry in their drinks... I'd enjoy more normal drinks. I wouldn't visit again.

Speakeasy! Like going back to the 20’s

By Gipperland |

Really good (and strong) mixed drinks. Not much in the way of beer, but they make up for it the whiskey selection. Really cool atmosphere. Be sure to “go to the library “. That’s the room behind the moving bookcase. So cool!

Great drinks and atmosphere

By sphynxtraveler |

A girlfriend and I went to Bourbon & Branch and had the best time. Our waitress was great and took time to explain the menu. I had the Heavy Artillery (which has 3 liquors that are 100 proof), which was very good and well worth the $14. They also serve beer for those that don't do hard liquor. Definitely a great date night place. The only down side is that is the noise level is not controlled, so it really isn't as quiet of a place as I had hoped. Will definitely recommend and return.

Horrible experience. Lacks dignity. Not worthy of your money

By Bacinac |

If customer service is a essential to your enjoyment do not visit Bourbon and Branch. I’ve never given a one star review but this place is the worst customer experience I’ve ever had in my entire life as a global traveler. My group was treated like garbage by a self aggrandizing overly pretentious staff. Everyone more important than the other and all bent on bullying you. We were rule abiding customers but were asked to leave at 75 min into 90 minute reservation. Staff over-reacts to any question. A little courtesy goes a long way. This place has none. Please don't come here.

The cocktails are fabulous!

By 144Y |

Fun place to go for pre dinner drinks. Great selection and even have great alchohal free drinks. We ordered seven different cocktails. Shared between four of us so we could try a variety. Six were amazing. Already to go back. Take a cab to avoid being followed and bothered by the beggars. We walked from the St Francis Weston and it's an easy walk if you are street wise and don't the characters along the way. They will try to give you directions and they expect a tip for their help. So don't let them engage you in any conversation. It is worth the cultural adventure!!

surprise

By Josh2019 |

What an amazing experience! Fabulous cocktails and great service. Its quirky, secret, dark, luxurious and a must when you visit San Francisco. Its also owned by an Irishman.....What more can I say.

Hidden speakeasy gem

By littleve |

Very cool place. I had a great experience so much so we went back on night #2. Cocktails are great, you can tell they are truly homemade and ingredients are well sourced. I loved the atmosphere of being dark, old music and speaking easy. No cell phones allowed. The main bar is of course a little more fun, but this requires a reservation and if it's tourist season you need weeks in advance. The library next door does not require reservations but seating and the menu is limited compared to the main B&B bar. We were there in the middle of the week and got reservations the same day. It's worth a stop, for the cocktails and atmosphere. Reasonably priced for an SF bar.

Unique experience

By KDHews |

What a cool place. One drink was better than the next. The service was great and so was the atmosphere.

This was so much fun

Great experience, Ian was a superb server and very knowledgeable. I will go again and again. The variety of drinks plus the speak easy atmosphere made it a real fun experience

Speakeasy with Bouncers, Passwords and Hidden Rooms

By JeriLG |

We had been told of this place and decided to give it a try. We did not have the highly encouraged reservations. We met the hostess prior to opening however and she encouraged us that she would take us back to the library. We returned later with some friends and got past the doorman with the password. The hostess greeted us and indeed walked us past dark, intimate, groupings. A wall of books opened up a secret room (I am sure there are more) and we were led to a bartender making amazing cocktails. Great experience! Will get reservations next time.

Great venue and great drinks

By Lyons_Jamie |

Everything was 5 star! The cocktails and the service was immense, we particularly loved the Delicious Sours and a had a lovely chat with staff at the end of the night. Word of warning for European travellers, bring ID as Californian Laws mean they can’t let you in without it. If we’re back in SF we are definitely coming back here!

Fun atmosphere

By mel260 |

The theme/atmosphere is very fun. I was a little disappointed by the password entry as it was not executed to prohibition theme- they just took 2 groups in at once to be seated and we didn't even use the password. The drinks were good but expensive. I liked that they don't allow phones- that was a nice touch and a great way to unplug. Overall we had a good time but know you will be paying for the atmosphere, as the drinks are small and pricey.

Innovative cocktails in fun, quirky atmosphere

By FamilyGuyLA |

So it gets complicated. See, there's this Library style bar. But there's a speakeasy called Bourbon and Branch through a door on the right hand side. And there's a speakeasy speakeasy in the back of the Bourbon and Branch speakeasy. Wilson and Wilson Detective Agency is a cool, quiet and friendly speakeasy. To get in, you MUST make a reservation (thewilsonbar.com) and time is limited to 90 minutes, although you can stretch it if it's not busy. The drinks are unique and excellently crafted. A few were not to our particular taste, but they were innovative, such as one that used fennel (I know, WTF) but it was really good. Their drink menu is set up like a food menu, with starters, mains and dessert. You don't have to order all three, just pick and choose and all drinks are $18.00. The atmosphere is quiet elegance so chatting amongst friends is easy. Pro: Innovative and tasty cocktails, a fun menu structured like a case file and a nice decor. Con: Pricey. The drinks come with added tax and one of those BS San Francisco surcharges for whatever, so figure out the door you're at $25 per cocktail Quirky: The address is 501 Jones Street but, naw, you can't actually enter at 501 Jones Street. I mean, that would be too easy. Instead, go around the corner to O'Farrell and there's an unmarked door next to The Crosby. That's the entrance to the Library, there's a semi-hidden door on the right to the Bourbon and Branch speakeasy and let them know you're there, and they will escort you to the Wilson and Wilson Detective Agency.

Poor service

By Linda L |

We have visited Bourbon & Branch 2 times before, and had an enjoyable time. The concept is a fun one --- when you reserve, you are given a password to use in obtaining admittance to the speakeasy. In the past, staff have been talkative and the atmosphere was fun. On this visit, however, we were seated in a tight booth and were served by a brusk and rude waitress. She recommended a drink that was unpleasant, and when we shared that it was very sour she offered to "replace" the drink with another one that was sweeter. She immediately took away the original drink with only a sip gone. Indeed the new drink was improved. However, when she brought the bill, she charged us for both drinks(which was expensive at $14) and claimed she had not said she was "replacing" the drink. Sadly, this visit ended up an unpleasant experience based on the experience with the waitress. I doubt we will return.

Great drinks and atmosphere

By Joe P |

Me and my wife visited here early on in the evening as it booked up so fast, you can't go unless you make a reservation first. But I'm so glad we did ! Service was perfect and the staff really knew their stuff I had a great rye old fashioned and my wife had a perfect cucumber gimlet just to name a few of the 8 drinks we had haha. I would go back time and time again !

Meh.

By Ligaya M |

Decided to start a girls night out with drinks at Bourbon and Branch. After entering through the main entrance we were escorted to our table. The bar atmosphere was cool, retro, but very dark. The bartenders were busy making drinks and not very welcoming. We were seated in an upstairs alcove overlooking the bar. Our waitress then handed us drink menus (a heavy book with pages of drinks) and told us to keep it down....not a great start, especially for seven ladies looking to have fun in an empty bar. In any case, we found the menu very overwhelming and asked our waitress for some guidance. She seemed annoyed by our question and then preceded to give a very cursory description of each section and then got snappy when we tried to use our phones to shine a light on the menu (we couldn't read anything it was so dark). She then disappeared for quite a while. We finally ordered a round of drinks and then waited again. We decided we should order our next drink when she brought the first one to make the most of our allotted 1.5 hours. She finally brought our drinks and when we said we'd like to put in our next order, she said we'd have to wait. Seriously. I have never had such difficulty with ordering another cocktail. In any case, all would be forgiven if the drinks were fabulous, but they were mediocre (I had the Creole Cocktail and the Brooklyn 2.0 and also tried sips of the other girls' drinks...nothing special). We didn't have a place to put our drinks (we were sitting on cubes) and didn't even get offered water. Not a great experience. We decided to go to the Red Room in the Clift Hotel after...much more fun, great cocktails and they were very happy to serve us!

Great speakeasy

We entered through a fake bookcase and the drinks were amazing. I would especially recommend the Moscow Mule and any other drink!

Overbooked and let down

By SarahLovesLemonade |

We enjoy trying unique little places which is why we booked bourbon and branch 7 weeks in advance for a Friday night for myself and husband who were visiting from the uk. We arrived and were told we couldn’t come in as it was a private event. I explained that we had a booking. They asked to see a confirmation (as if to catch us out), I showed them the email that we had booked on 15th May for a 29th June reservation. They acknowledged this but said we couldn’t come in anyway. Obviously a private event had been booked after we made our reservation but no one bothered to get in touch to let us know our booking was cancelled. They gave no apology, just that we should maybe try next door at their sister bar Wilson and Wilson instead. This bar is completely separate and they wouldn’t honour our booking either. Absolutely terrible customer service, they could have resolved this by accepting their mistake and speaking directly to the sister bar to allow us entry, instead we were told to try again another night. We were only in the city for a couple of days and didn’t have time to come back, nor would we want to after being misled like this.We did the right thing booking in advance but there was really no point as they let us down anyway. Very disappointed and complete waste of time.

Wilson and Wilson detective agency

By Dino |

Bourbon and Branch is excellent but this time we got reservations to the smaller bar within B&B called Wilson and Wilson. Drinks were amazing, atmosphere was fun and relaxed, bartenders were informative and friendly--overall a great experience.

Interesting Place

By divya92 |

We walked place the place and didn't even realize, Google Maps isn't helpful either. The place itself is in a questionable not very safe area. The place itself had a cool vibe, the normal bar was having a singles night which seemed lively. I was there for a private event and the hosts were very friendly and accommodating.

Now I know what a speakeasy is

By Luis S |

Never had to make a reservation for a bar before but it was definitely worth the extra planning. Drinks were the freshest and tastiest ever had and has now spoiled me for what to expect from a cocktail. The host gave us a quick tour as we were leaving through the door disguised as a bookcase that revealed yet another cool bar. Make time for this s place and you won't be disappointed

Great Cocktails

By Yorkie_Traveller |

Had read about this place before visiting SF and sounded pretty cool, not too far from our hotel we gave it a go. Went to the wrong door originally but the staff were very accommodating and helpful. We had not booked but were lucky enough to get in midweek. Cocktails were great. Would return.

Not the "Speakeasy" you are looking for

By Sandra O |

Not at all the "Speakeasy Experience" they claim to be. Very loud and their menu is way to large. The managers should keep better track of the employees and not allow their bartender friends to overtake the establishment. Very disappointed and wouldn't recommend for anyone seeking that true "speakeasy" feel.

Bourbon Cocktails

By cristaoconn |

I had high expectations for this experience. My husband is a bourbon collector and I thought it would be a nice surprise for our anniversary night. We had a little trouble locating the correct door to enter, but once we found it and said the password, we were transferred into the era of prohibition. Dark and quiet. Not very busy. My biggest reason for the 4 stars was our server. I understand she was playing a role, but she did not seem happy to be there. She was not welcoming or very personable. Drinks were expensive, but that was expected. We ordered the Imperial Eagle and it was fantastic. I personally don’t drink too much bourbon, but I loved the complexity of the drink. We only stayed for 45 minutes. Although a very unique experience, we simply enjoy a more lively and upbeat type of environment.

Fun spot for date night

Bourbon and Branch is a great spot for a drink with friends or a quick date night. The cocktails are works of art, week-balanced and tasty. The vibe is 1920s speakeasy. For extra fun, make a reservation for a booth.

Great drinks, great staff

Awesome place for a casual drink. No reservation actually needed but knowing the password helps get you in.
