We went there before the original chef left and we praised this restaurant around the world as the best German food outside of Germany. Went again two weeks ago and one more time today. Please fire your "Deutschen Koch" and get the first one back. This restaurant is becoming another joint what calls itself German cuisine. Beer is good, goulash soup and sourdough bred is also good. Other food tastes bland and is soaked in greasy oil. Please make it German again. .....

Service was pretty good, but our food was terrible. The potato pancakes were like hockey pucks and tasted like they came out of the freezer. My husband’s bratwurst was just awful and the schnitzel tasted previously frozen as well.

With an extensive beer menu and two large bars, Brauhaus is always a fun spot. The decor is very detailed and attractive. The staff is always friendly and accommodating. The pretzels and other German-style food options are an excellent combination with all the excellent beers available.

A great selection of sausages from central Europe. We did not try any of the other entrees but saw them served. Ridiculously copious portions. Excellent food, cold brew, good service. Highly recommended

We had several very good German beers from Andechs. I had the goulash soup with a side of spaetzle. It was still very spicy even after mixing it with spaetzle and potatoes. The beer was a necessity to balance the spiciness. My wife had the smoked trout and asparagus, both of which were good.

After having seen Michael Symon and a buddy of his on TV enjoy a couple of brews and German food at Brauhaus Schmitz a while ago, I resolved then and there that I had to go there! It wasn't hard to talk my wife into it, as she wanted to see the Liberty Bell! Brauhaus Schmitz is about as German as you can get without flying over the "pond" and actually going to Germany. They have at least 34 German beers on tap, the food (read wurst and German style meats) are as close as you can get in the US, and the décor and ambience is really really close to that in Deutschland. Ask me how I know, I lived in Germany and did things German for seventeen years, and have a masters degree in the German language and literature. I'm still trying to do things German, only now here in the US! You can be sure that when Nick is behind the bar, authentic German festival music will be filling the air! As mentioned earlier, there are 34 beers on tap, and 50 different types in bottles. And wherever possible, the beer is served in a glass from that brewery! I mean, how great is that! The "Schnapps" list contains 23 entries! The menu is extensive, and includes the classics such Wiener Schnitzel and Zigeuner Schnitzel, a Wurstplatte (my favorite), and even Spanferkel (roast suckling pig) for 12 folks (minimum). The backroom of Brauhaus Schmitz is ideal for Spanferkel parties, Fasching parties, or any kind of party. The architecture and decorations are reminiscent of a beer hall in Germany. The service staff are attentive but not pushy. Angela, Rob and Nick were all outstanding. The folks at Brauhaus Schmitz make a large effort to promote things German, e.g., on Saturday mornings, they host the German Soccer League Fan Coalition (BundesligaFC), where German Soccer league fans get together and watch German Soccer stream live. They also provide advertising space for German language and culture immersion classes for children and adults in the Philadelphia area. The bottom line is that Brauhaus Schmitz is a gem! I recommend it highly for the ambience, beer, food, service, and beer!

Girls' Day in Philly led us to Brauhaus Schmitz because one of our crew is from Germany and she loves to try German restaurants. She was not disappointed...nor were the rest of us. We had a great bartender who was very patient and had all the answers while we asked questions about different beers. Their beer bible is quite extensive and you'll wish you had a few days to just sit there and try whatever catches your eye. We decided on snacks. I had the pretzel with beer cheese. It was good, but it was kind of tough, maybe microwaved or just not revived well in the oven. The beer cheese was great because I could actually taste the beer and it wasn't too salty. My German friend got the currywurst and was super-happy. The sausage is homemade and I believe they said the curry was, too. She let me steal some fries and they were the best I've had in a while. My other two friends shared the charcuterie selection of meats/cheeses/bread and German goodies and were beside themselves with the taste sensations. The place is gigantic so if you walk in and the front room is full, there is probably space in the back or up in the loft. Everybody we came in contact was friendly and professional. All I can say is that if my friend from Germany says "I want to come here every time I visit Philly!", that's all you need to know

My friends and I went here the other weekend as the dinner to start off my bachelorette party. The staff were not only dressed in cultural dress which was super cool but also so friendly and did a great job taking care of us. The drink selections were very extensive which made it difficult to pick. I ordered the chicken schnitzel which was so lightly breaded and was honestly the best I've ever had. When it was time for dessert a couple of people from my group got Apple strudel and someone got schnapps. Everything was so good!

Always looking for German style restaurants (I'm a born German) when traveling. Found the BEST so far in Philly last weekend. Second generation of German chef has the best food I found in 20 years in US. A lot of restaurants call them self "German", but The Brauhaus Schmitz is the REAL deal. Went there twice in two days

Food was delicious, beer was great and service was fast. The tables had all silverware and napkins which was very convenient!

This place can get busy to make a reservation on the weekend or during special events. You can do it on open table. This place has a great atmosphere. The drinks are plenty and the food is great. We sat for dinner and had great, fast service. They have some rare German beer on tap and bottle. We will be coming back. Some nights there is live entertainment.

Stopped by here after visiting Magic garden Fast friendly service...excellent beer selection....air conditioned on a hot day Enjoyed the liver wurst....sampled the sausage...and our vegetarian friend loved the spätzle Great stop!

I visited Brauhaus last night for dinner. Once again it did not disappoint. Everything from the garden salad to my Kroketten were on point and the bier just topped it all. This was the 2nd year in a row I visited Brauhaus for an early birthday dinner and I'm thinking about making it an annual tradition. Love it!

My husband, his sister and I dropped in while visiting Philadelphia. We were looking for a good German dinner and we got that and more. Two of us each ordered schnitzel and what a meal we got! The size is 3/4 of a dinner plate - enough to share and too much for a single person. Absolutely delicious. Husband had sausage (2) and they were so thick but he ate all. Even saved room for dessert and the apple struedel was just as delicious. It was a great time. The wait staff were very attentive and lovely. Love the wood interior. Could use some German music.

Last night eight of us, all adults, revisited Brauhaus Schmitz on South Street for a family night out. Once again, after ordering adult beverages, the various entrees were well-received by all. Wurstbrett (sampler of sausages: potato salad, sauerkraut, six sausages) was deliciously enjoyed by two of the guys, and the rest of us feasted on Wiener Schnitzel (Breaded & Fried Cutlet, Lemon, Parsley French Fries, Haussalt), Jager Schnitzel (Bacon Mushroom Gravy, Spätzle Braised Red Cabbage), Rahmschnitzel (German Schnitzel with Mushroom Cream Sauce served with Green Beans and Spatzle) and Schweinshaxe (Pork Shank with Potato Dumpling). Unfortunately, at dessert time, while the Brezelauflauf (bread pudding , caramel, malted whipped cream) was very good, the Butterkuchen (pound cake, sweetened butter, berries, whipped cream), which several of us had ordered, arrived as if it had been in the kitchen way too long. After asking to talk with the manager, he removed those from the bill, and also comped the coffees which were ordered. Service was efficient if not overly friendly, and we all wished she had left the bread and bread plates once dinner arrived, and wished that she had come back periodically to check if we needed anything.

This is an authentic German restaurant. Although I am personally not a big fan of German food, my dining companions loved it. Two of the people had the Wurstplatte and the Wurstbrett, which were a selection of sausages. They said they were very good, but they were a very large portion. A third person had the Schweinshaxe (Pork shank). It also received rave reviews. To follow the apples strudel was excellent.

Love, love, love Brauhaus Schmitz. If you’re a fan of German beer like I am, this is an excellent choice for you. The selection is extensive and the bar staff is friendly.

If you were to walk in here and cover your ears you'd insist you were inside a cozy, traditional German bar. Everything here is built to perfection and the most phenomenal bar atmosphere you'll fine outside of Germany. The beer list here is nothing short of exquisite. A tremendous amount of effort has clearly been put into curating a diverse and exceptional beer list. They've got every appropriate glassware for every great German beer from the kölsch glass to to the tulip glass to liter steins and even beer boots!

After seeing some German restaurants on TV recently I wanted to try one out for myself. While planning a quick trip to Philly I found Brauhaus Schmitz located not far away from sites that were going to visit, with the good reviews I couldn't not try it. I have no idea what anything authentic German should look like or taste like, (except maybe automobiles) we all loved the food and ambiance. The service was good and the Ayinger hefe weizen beer was wonderful. We had everything from schnitzel to sausage to rouladen was excellent. I also loved the Gurkensalat and will be learning to make that at home. Our kids also like the apple soda. Pricing was good, just over $100 for four people's entrees and beverages. I have paid that for much lower quality food. I wish we lived closer, there is so much more on the menu I want to try.

We decided to visit this restaurant after seeing it on Burgers, Brews, & Ques on the Food Network. This restaurant did not disappoint as the food was amazing and they had an extensive list of German beers. We started with the soft pretzel, which was pretty large and tasty. Then we ordered a bratwurst sandwich and brauenwurst sandwich with sauerkraut. The sandwiches were a good size and the roll was small so it did not take away from the wurst. Both wurst were packed with flavor and the brauenwurst had a nice snap when biting into it. The draft menu had about 6 Oktoberfest beers, which is what we were interested in drinking. The beers come in 4 sizes up to a liter. The interior of the restaurant was very charming and decorated to look like an Authentic Brauhas. We will definitely return when in the mood for great German food.

Visiting with friends from the area and they suggested brauhaus for dinner. It ended up being the best meal of our whole trip! Homestyle German food.. Very hearty and filling. Most of us ordered the smaller sausage plate (2 choices of house-made wurst and 2 sides) and beers. Our waitress was friendly and knowledgeable even though we were one of the last tables on a Sunday night. She was very helpful when we wanted to pick some schnapps for after dinner. Definitely a must-visit!

I came upon this restaurant on a whim. I was in nearby Cherry Hill, NJ for a rowing regatta and on my downtime decided to take the PATCO into Philly. I saw this place on Tripadvisor and decided it was the perfect place for a late lunch. It's a good thing I showed up when I did because I got one of the last available tables on a Saturday afternoon. Unbeknownst to me, the Champions League Final was being shown on the giant screen. Within 20 minutes of my arrival, this place was a hotbed of activity. I managed to get my beer order in quickly. My food order took a couple of extra minutes as the waiters were overrun with beer orders. It was pretty comical to witness. I got my food order in and was served just before the start of the game. The food was excellent. I haven't had a good goulash for a long time. The Wienerschnitzel was just as I had hoped and I had a great time dipping the schnitzel and chips into the goulash. Despite the busyness of the restaurant, the service was as attentive as it could be and couldn't be more pleased with my meal. I would venture back to this restaurant the next time I am in Philly, however, I will be sure to make a reservation next time. Either that or I will ensure that there are no championship games scheduled.

I am a frequent traveler in Germany, and adore the active, convivial and slightly-crazed atmosphere of the beer halls in Bavaria. Substitute football in the background, a slightly younger crowd and change to English, but leaving everything else in place, and there you have the character of Philadelphia’s Brauhaus Schmitz. Patrons here are a mix of locals and travelers, all gathering purposefully to mingle and be raucous (but civilized!). The German beer selection (and knowledgeability of the bar staff) is second-to-none for being in the US. Cuisine is decidedly Bavarian and authentic, creative and sublime. My party of four was here during Restaurant Week in January 2018, and we sampled everything on the menu. Nothing disappointed, and all was excellent. Bierkasesuppe, gulasch, kroketten, rotkohlsalat, sauerbraten, schnitzel ... oh my! Then there are the servers in dirndles ... bright smiles, cheery attitudes and very personable ... and so charming! Kudos especially to our own, Gina D., who was very attentive and helpful in suggesting and describing details of all the food offerings and beer varieties. I will not forget her, and will look forward to returning to Brauhaus Schmitz when I return to Philadelphia. Vielen danke!

Family decided to return to the Brauhaus Schmitz to celebrate two birthdays. We were all looking forward to this meal since eating here a year ago. Food was delicious ... schnitzel, sausage platters and yummy side dishes (spaetzle, red cabbage, sauerkraut and German potato salad). Our female server was very stiff and not at all welcoming or friendly. She failed to ever offer us the chance to order a second round of drinks (monetary loss for the house). Another problem was the fact that she removed the bread from the table prior to dinner being served...really??? Their bread is one of the meal’s highlights. The women all ordered the pound cake ($8). What came to the table was a 2” square of inedible garbage ... I say this because all four of us took a bite at the same time & we all made the same “yuck” face and spit the cake out. The female who brought the cake to the table (not our server) was so incredibly rude that we called for the manager. We explained the dilemma ... rude employee and inedible dessert. Although he removed the cost of the dessert, he was somewhat flippant in his response to us by laughing and stating he would make the chef eat the cake. I hope that Mr. Hager looks into these issues. I don’t see us returning anytime soon.

I recently ate at Brauhaus Schmitz as part of a function. The food was delicious, waiting staff very attentive and friendly and there was an extensive selection of beers. Staff wear authentic Bavarian dress to set the scene. Brauhaus Schmitz worth a visit if German food is your thing!

If you are hankering for some real and tasty German fare then this is the place. Looks small from the outside but inside there are 2 bars and an upstairs. We sat at the bar and chose a beer from their extensive beer list and had a glass of wine from their not so extensive WBTG list. Ordered food and the portions are generous and nicely plated. We order pig knuckle with kraut and the large knuckle was crisp and meaty the was in should be. Our other dish was two wursts with kraut and potato pancakes. Sausages are housemade as is the kraut. Prices are steep with pints starting at $6 increasing to $12 and wines start at $10 for average wines at best. Having said that I would return based on the beer selection, atmosphere and quality of food. If you want German, this is the place

The food at this place is great. After a trip to Munich I never thought I would find schweinhaxen in Philadelphia, I was so wrong. They also have a great beer selection. 🍺👍

Our party of 8 had a great time at the restaurant. The German food was prepared well and was delicious. The beer was also cold and tasty. Our waitress was very friendly however the service was a tad on the slow side. Overall we had an excellent time and all agreed they would happily return in the future.

I could tell they were trying to be as authentic as possible when the kolsch I ordered came in a proper kolsch glass instead of some sort of stein. I had a kaesewurst and she had pork schnitzel. Both were excellent. Both had the spaetzle as a side.

Fantastic German food, great beer selection and great location on south street. Great for a night out with the guys, or a family dinner. We try to get here at least once every few months despite living over an hour away, its that good!

Wlked in here after walking all morning for some liquid refreshment. They have as good a selection of German beers as I have ever seen. The draft selection is fantastic and they also have a great selection of bottle beers. The waiter, Jason was just great and let me try 4 beers before I made a selection. Glad we dropped by and had this liquid experience.

We were looking forward to trying this restaurant, the beer was good. The pretzel and bread were also very good. 2 people in our party order the Schweinhaxe. There were both so salty they were inedible. When we pointed that out to our server , he ignored the issue and told us to fill out a comment card. SMH. I will never go back.

They have a huge selection of German beers to choose from. The only thing we ate were the pretzels, apple strudel and spaghetti and meat ball ice cream (yes, I said spaghetti and meat balls ice cream) Everything was excellent and so was the staff.

On a lazy Saturday afternoon we were craving some good German Food and beer as my friend hadn't ever tried German food. They had live entertainment that was pleasant background music especially with the windows open. We had the sausage platter. The potato salad was excellent. I'd go back.

TLDR version at bottom I have been here about a dozen times, and every time I go, I'm glad I went. The Schnitzel is thin and crispy, and not too greasy. Very authentic, if sometimes a teensy little bit on the dry side. The Käsespätzle is delicious & very authentic, but for me could always use more cheese (I like it super-cheesy, like my jokes). The house salad is a delicious mix of different greens and a delicious dressing, which I believe is made in-Haus, and the most charming little round croutons. The sausages are all made in-Haus, and are also very authentic, right down to the extra-knackig Knackwurst. But because Munich is like my second home, I am partial to the Weißwurst (white Bavarian sausage), served with dark sweet mustard. At some point I want to take the Meterwurst challenge, but I don't know if that will ever happen. The Kartoffelsalat (potato salad) is restaurant-style, which means a vinegar dressing although dressing, although I prefer country-style with bacon, served hot, this version is still very authentic. The Rotkohl/Blaukohl/Blaukraut (braised red cabbage) is about standard, but the Sauerkraut is definitely 5-stars. Unfortunately, I can't get kids to eat either one, they still have young taste-buds; they'll grow to appreciate it when they're older. The manager is a very personable young man, and usually willing to accommodate special requests. In summary, the food is always impeccable and unquestionably authentic. I do have 2 small complaints, and realistically, the management can't really fix these things, at least not cost-effectively. 1. Most of the staff members do not speak German. Only the last visit there were there staff members I could speak to, and two of them at that, which is two more than most times I visit. 2. (This is the least important thing, but they used to have it) Tracht (traditional clothing) was at one time the staff uniform, but now only appears around Oktoberfest time. While disappointing, I completely understand not having it. It is cost-prohibitive, and really not that big of a deal. Tbe decor of the restaurant is amazing. The entrance is like a Riesenfaß (giant barrel) They have even got a wood-plank Stammtisch (trunk-table, and there's a while thing to Google about that word) obviously made from a large tree trunk. Then there are the wall hangings, which are almost all in German. The bathrooms off of the big dining room are the ideal bathrooms, every stall is its own little room. The selection of beers is probably good, although I can personally never have them when I'm there, because it's always with people from work. There is metered parking on the street, but often hard to find. Take public transit or a car service. TLDR version: Great, authentic German food at reasonable prices, good, friendly service, German beers on tap. Excellent bathroom in big dining room. Highlight=sausage. Hit "like," if you did.

Parking was hell but the food was really good. Food was alil pricey but we enjoyed our meals. Definitely enjoyed my schnitzel and my mom have a sausage plate. Yummy! Great list of beers also!

We went here on a Saturday night to celebrate my parent's 65th wedding anniversary with my parents and my brother's family. First, I was surprised that we were able to find parking on the same block, because South Street is a busy street. Lucky, I guess. There is metered parking, $2/hour, using a nearby kiosk (that takes credit cards). Second, we were able to get a table right away, even though we had no reservation. Why? According to my sister-in-law, they recently expanded, having purchased the building next door. So the place is a lot bigger than it looks. Inside, the atmosphere is a converted store with a lot of exposed brick walls. The entrance has some old cubby holes along one wall and framed posters along the opposite wall. A large bar dominates the main room, and a second bar can be found in the next-door seating area as well. I didn't go upstairs, but it looks like there is seating in a small balcony that overlooks the main bar. The drink menu features a HUGE selection of German beer, as well as mixed drinks and a small wine list. Menu is what you would expect from a German restaurant with lots of pork, sausage and schnitzel. Every one except me ordered the schnitzel (choice of pork, veal or chicken), which was pretty good. I ordered the sauerbraten which was OK, but not great. Most dishes came with 2 sides, and serving sizes were generous. Actually, the side dishes deserve special mention, because they were all very good: spätzle, sauerkraut, rotkohl (red cabbage), cucumber salad. Service was very good. For dessert, the apple strudel is worth trying. Prices? Most entrees are in the $20-$25 range, drink prices are reasonable. I wouldn't recommend this for a family with children, but I would like to come here another time with just friends (and a designated driver).

I am of German descent and my girlfriend is learning German, so we wanted to find a nice German restaurant and we were lucky enough to find one. I wish there were more German restaurants because German cuisine is quite good. The restaurant looks like a typical Biergarten in Munich. The menu is in English and German. The food is delicious and reminds me of food I have had in Germany. An excellent restaurant and will continue to go here in the future.

We really enjoyed our early dinner at Brauhaus. The beer menu is astounding, with 30 or so German beers on tap (and more in bottles). The food was delicious (although the goulash was a bit bland). The pork schnitzel was well prepared (both as entree and in sandwich); the sides (sauerkraut with bacon, red cabbage, spaetzle, potato pancakes) were absolute wonderful. And we couldn't have asked for more solicitous service from two servers. This was a great find! For good solid German fare it can't be topped.

Authentic Bavarian brauhaus with an amazing selection of German beers! Pretty reasonable prices as well.

We only had time for a beer, but the beer selection was mind blowing, it actually comes in a book. Since there were so many choices, we asked our server to recommend something, and we loved both of the choices he made. Unfortunately we didn't have time to eat, but the pretzels, and cheese plates that we saw looked very good and it smells good in there kind of like sauerkraut, but in a good way. Nice ambience inside too, definitely feels German.

My son and I had dinner there a few weeks ago. The restaurant is very reminiscent of places in Bavaria. Had a pork shank that was on par with many I have had in Bavaria. As best I can tell, its the only place in Philadelphia that offers roasted pork shank. My only disappointment was that they didn't have mashed potatoes. Instead, they served a potato ball (authentic, but not a favorite of mine). The red cabbage was very good as well.

One of my favorite places when I want co fort food, beer and of course an after dinner schnapps. I’m partial to the cutlets, not don’t miss the sausages. Great happy hour specials with inexpensive sausage sandwiches.

Huge selection of German beers. Great atmosphere. Waitress was very helpful with beer list and other items on menu. Everything we had was presented well and tasted great.

I visited this bar with a friend and I enjoyed the large variety of beers offered. The overall environment of the German restaurant was fun and just like "Texas" everything is done BIG - The beers - The Food = BIG! I had a few German brews along with a bratwurst and pretzel. I enjoyed the our bartender who provided us with plenty of samples and educated us on German beers. I will be back to enjoy more of the offerings.

Well, we used to LOVE this place...but...not anymore. The service was good, atmosphere fun, but, food, not so good. Ordered 3 apps, German meatballs, salmon and trout spread, fried kraut balls....I'm really pissed about the meatballs..it was ONE meatball, sliced in to 4 pieces!! How insulting..if you don't have enough of an ingredient, then don't offer it, the smoked salmon n trout was an unappetizing mush of something-gross, the fried Krout balls with sausage was boring. Entrees: rouladen, ONE rouladen with spätzle and red cabbage, ONE ? Really? For that price? Rip off! COD was ok, other entrees were meh...no more, not worth it, and has really gone downhill .

We walked in on a hot day strolling on South street looking for a nice cold German beer and authentic food. Right away we liked the atmosphere and life music. The menu had a nice selection of beer, including three different sets of samplers. It also had a good selection of food. My Husband had a sausage platter which was excellent, but my pork schnitzel was dry and tasteless. The other thing that we did not like is that the waiter did not offer us a kids menu until our toddler daughter refused to eat a soup from a regular menu.

Best beer selection in town and all around. Good tending to nice food of its kind. Excellent treatment from waiters, always willing to advise you and make your choice the best!

Excellent German beer selection, many choice and very knowledgeable server. The bartender for the high tables was very attentive. Carly was able to guide us to choose the right beer for our taste palette. German atmosphere is very inviting. All the food is great. Found the place from Visit Philly 11 Pretzels you have to try. Happy hours is very reasonable, need to sit at bar or high tables for the happy hour menu.

It was quite fun to step and find a high-school German class on field-trip, completing their final exam. At first blush, the place is traditionally German. The menu is certainly traditionally German. The food seems very traditionally German. And had I been in Germany, I'd have been over the moon ... feeling that I was having a traditional, old world experience. But ... I wasn't in Germany; I was in Philly. It felt rundown and tired. The recipes felt like they needed updating. Nothing wrong, just nothing to draw me back. The on-tap offerings were splendid. Service a bit slow and lack-lustre, but kind.

The best thing about the meal was the German grapefruit beer. We started with the pretzel with cheese spread. Pretzel was thin and hard with almost no salt. Cheese spread tasted like it came from the super market. Next the wings with blue cheese dip. Wings tasted like Costco. Blue cheese dip tasted like bottled dressing. Then we shared a sausage plate. Sausages tasted like they had been frozen and nuked. They were very dry, chewy and tasteless. We went because it was rated best German in Philly. Just dreadful

This is the second time I have been to Bauhaus Schmitz. Both visits were excellent. My daughter had chosen to become vegan and was pleasantly surprised a the number of vegetarian selections on the menu. We had the Kase (cheese plate) appetizer. It was excellent quality cheese but a pit pricey and small for the price tag. The spaetzle was excellent as well and is the second time i have had it. My daughter had a vegetarian dish that I sampled and it was fantastic. Entrees are also a bit pricey but the quality is there and so is the portion size. I can wait to go back and try the sausages and wursts. Our waiter was great. He was attentive without feeling rushed and a great personality. Definitely going back again.

We got a recommendation from a local restaurant owner and long time foodie that this place was THE place to go for authentic sauerkraut. So we finally made it here and just WOW!! The bratswere excellent as was the porkchop. And this place serves some of ThE BEST German potato salad I have ever had. The beer list is quite extensive as well and the servers know the beers very well and give great recommendations. My only critique would be about the outfits the servers have to wear. They are way too ridiculous for my liking. But they re friendly and knowledgeable. Pricing is great and serving size is perfect. A definite must if you're here and want some german fare!

Food too dry. Wish they would give more than 100 characters to explain go somewhere else. Bru Craft n Wurst is much better

This place is wonderful. There's a few separate sections, including an open bar and casual dining room, a huge dining room replete with German hunter's decor, and an upstairs with a long table and more. I've been thrice and enjoyed all three areas greatly. From the käsespätzle to the jägerschnitzel and brauhausburgers, there are many heavily satisfying entrees. The pretzels and bread are also scrumptious. We have not yet taken the initiative to have the lighter side of fair, but the salads look very good. There is an endless variety of beer, including a few gluten-free options, and I think it would be impossible not to find something you will love. You certainly cannot go wrong by choosing this place for a few drinks, at the very least. The parking can be very difficult here and make sure you put plenty of time into the meters. The metermaids are extremely aggressive. There is often Bundesliga football to watch in the main hall, which creates an exciting, but relaxed dining atmosphere. The WC's are very clean. No complaints at all.

My husband just stopped in without reservation and were seated immediately. Authentic German sausages were wonderful. I ordered only one sausage and with two sides, was more than I could finish. Our waitress Carly was very knowledgeable about the beer selection and her suggestion was spot on for my husband's taste.

Kartoffelpuffer which was extremely dry. Schnitzel Cordon Bleu…..very dry, also Schnitzel Winer drier. NEVER AGAIN

My family just had a great lunch at Brauhaus Schmitz! The beer selection is amazing, the food tasty and the service excellent. Really great spot for a meal with family or friends. The beer selection is authentic and extensive and the waiters know the beers well and make great recommendations. The sausage selection is likewise extensive and each one we tried was delicious - really liked the kasewurst, the krauterwurst, the speckwurst, the lammwurst, the bratwurst. Also really enjoyed the wienerschnitzel and the smoked trout and the pretzel. Had a great meal and fantastic service and we will be back again!

I love German fare and this place did not disappoint. My husband and I shared the pretzel app, mushroom bacon gravy fried and a potato pancake, all to die for. I ordered the gulasch for dinner which was not the best but my husband ordered the sausage platter and was pleasantly surprised. If you enjoy German food you will be happy

Wife and I went int the city for something unrelated and decided to get dinner. This establishment was on of the few open at 2pm. The server was great and looked really sharp and clean cut. He let me sample one of the beers and suggested the potato pancake. Get the potato pancake. This will sound weird but honestly the pancake reminded me of good Chinese food. Wife agreed that it was really tasty. I was amazed the place had only a handful of people in for lunch. The food was great, fresh baked bread with novelty butter, the sour kraut was the best i've had in a long time. The house salad also looked good. The menu has some expensive items (mid to high $20's) but also more than a couple 9 and 10 dollar plates too. VAST selection of beers.

This is one of my favorite bars in Philadelphia. They have an excellent selection of German beers by the liter and half liter and if you don't know what to get ask the bartenders and they will steer you in a good direction. The food is on the pricey side but you get what you pay for. This is also a fun bar to be at for all things soccer related and they do bus trips to Union games.

Growing up in Germany - i'm very excited to visit Brauhaus Schmitz for any Deutschland Fussballspiel! The Atmosphere is great! Beer Selection is great as well! The only improvements they need is the German Food e.g. Potato Pancakes are too thick & not crispy. The Currywurst doesn't taste like the ones in Germany. Visit Brauhaus during Germany's Fussball matches - if only Germany was just doing better in their Matches like the World Cup 2014.

Went there with my wife and friends. Had mostly cocktails and desserts but the beer choices were outstanding. They had a full offering of schnapps and good appetizers. Overall nice down to earth place to grab good food and a few beers.

This was my first visit to this place, but it will not be my last. They have one of the best beer selections I can remember seeing, if you love German beer. The food is above average and the service was great. We were there for over three hours and we never felt rushed.

We only came to Brauhaus Schmitz for an after dinner drink (or two). We were immediately struck by the seemingly authentic German theming of the restaurant, and were greeted by very friendly staff. There was a lot of good German beer on tap (and bottled), leading to a great choice. Overall, we enjoyed our visit here, having a couple of authentic German beers in what seemed to be an authentic environment.

We had lunch here today and loved it. They have the largest selection of tap and bottled German beer I have ever seen. We had veal weinerschnitzel which came with a choice of two sides. We chose potato pancakes and spätzle. All of it was delicious. If it is cold out ask for a table away from the front door. It gets cold when the door opens. Whether you love German food or have never had it in your life you will not be disappointed here.

We went to Brauhaus Schmitz last weekend and we had an excellent meal. Always great and with the many beers on tap it makes for a truly great German night out. My brother in law who has travelled extensively in Germany was impressed with the authentic flavoring and asked to go back again when he is in town. This restaurant is always high in our list of places to eat in Philly. Love it.

I haven't been to a lot of German restaurants in my life, but Brauhaus Schmitz came highly recommended. I see why. From the décor to the food, this place has to rank as tops on most lists of best restaurants in the city. The servings are "healthy" (read, large), the food is delicious, and it's spacious. When we arrived for a late lunch, the place was very nearly empty. I can only imagine what this place must be like when the joint's a-jumping. I had the Maultaschenpfannle, which is a lot easier to eat than it is to spell. Honestly, I was shocked as to how good the food was! My knowledge of German food begins and ends at sauerkraut (and that's mainly because of the spelling). And while I know Germans can't possibly eat sauerkraut at every meal, I had never really ventured beyond that. But ravioli stuffed with pork, bacon (made of pork, I presume), and spinach? These guys (and gals) might be on to something. Look, pay for street parking and prepare to dazzle ye olde taste buds.

Great dinner at Brauhaus Schmitz. Very pleasant staff. Beer menu was quite extensive, too bad they didn't have my first choice available. But we both found something we liked. The meal was quite good. Seemed to be fairly authentic, cripsy pork and sauerkraut. Apfelstrüdel was really tasty, loved the layered flaky dough. Will definitely return in the future.

Brauhaus was a delightful find. I was offered a seat at a table, the bar, or a high top. The high top seats two side-by-side. I sat at the high top facing the bar. The bar tender took my beer order and left a food menu. They have a large selection of German beers and are poured into proper glasses, depending on the style. I had the Paulaner Salvator. It is a terrific beer. For dinner, I had the Huntsman's schnitzel (Jager schnitzel) made of pork. It came with bacon mushroom gravy, spaetzle, and red cabbage. It was wonderful! I could eat it every day. I started the meal with the soup of the day -- a nice barley soup. Excellent. Only complaint: a two-piece band was playing at the front door. They were very loud and distracting. Should have lowered the volume. This is a must eat restaurant if in Philadelphia! Total cost with three beers: $56 before tip.

We had reservations and we are few minutes late. We were "almost" seated right away - by the time the hostess got us to our table, someone else was sitting there. So, we had to wait about 15 minutes to get another table, but it was ok, because they had a BABY GOAT there to play with!!!! Anyway, we got seated at 6:30, our server brought us water shortly after & then we didn't see him again until after 7pm!! We were slightly irritated, and thirsty. When he returned, he brought more water & we explained to him that we had a reservation at 9 PM somewhere else and we needed to make sure we were done and out of there by 8:30. He was absolutely gracious and promised us that he would accelerate our order to ensure we didn't miss our next reservation. He wasn't lying! Within minutes our appetizers appeared. We got the Laugenbrezel (pretzel w/ beer cheese) & the Bavarian Cambert (fried cheese) - and they were both delicious! For our entrees, we got Omas Kasespatzle ( cheesy potato dumplings, Backfisch (fried cod), Schweinshaxe (pork shank)& Weinerschnitzel (breaded chicken cutlet). They were ALL amazing! For dessert, we had the Pflaumenkuchen (plum cake), Marzipanstollen (almond bread) & Apple Strudel. Their beer menu is about as many pages as War & Peace - which is great if you are a beer lover. There's no specialty cocktail menu, so if you're not a beer lover, come with something already in mind. We were stuffed & happy when we left at 8:30 with just enough time to call an Uber to take to our next reservation!

Have been a few times now, and I have to say it is one of my fave spots in Philly. Have gone for brews and snacks, then as the last stop of the Philly Brew Tour, and both times it was awesome. Took a shot and brought my parents for Mother's Day, and so glad I did. With it being Mother's Day, we made a reservation and were greeted and seated promptly at 12:30pm. They had a special for the holiday where Mom got a beer-mosa on the house - one of three choices: a banana-hefe, a framboise-hefe, and a schwartzbier one. What I liked was as our server came over he made it clear my mom could have anything she wanted off the draft list if none of those were her flavor. Very nice for them to be as open and flexible with their special. Dad and I started off with some great German beers off the draft list, which is second to none. Warm rye and pumpernickel bread was provided promptly, and was served with a delicious creamy garlic spread. We started off with the create our own sausage platter, where we selected six of the nine sausages they offer and all split them. Both the sauerkraut and the german potato salad were delicious compliments to the main, and literally eight of the nine we had were absolutely delicious. With the bread and the sides, man, what a great way to kick off a meal. The draft list continued to impress, and we got to enjoy some very special, unique offerings. Recommendations were well thought out and creative, and they were all hits. I went with the doner kebab, a fave of mine anywhere. Made with lamb and beef, served with a somewhat spicy yogurt sauce and fresh lettuce, tomato and onion, the pita itself was what set the meal apart. The bread was delicious, puffy and generous, and really made for a great entree. I would absolutely have it next time, this was a winner. We contemplated getting dessert from the german pastry offerings, but everyone was so stuffed we just had to call it a day. We had an awesome time, though, and the family at Brauhaus helped to make it a super special day. My mom had a blast, and we will be back for sure. Thanks for an awesome time. Highest possible recommendation.

We recently returned from a vacation in Germany and were craving German food; Brauhaus Schmidt did not disappoint. The beer list was lengthy and I was happy to see a radler on the list; it was tasty and tasted like those I enjoyed in Germany. I was craving pork knuckles and sauerkraut and was very happy to see both on the menu. Both were excellent. The sauerkraut was the best I ever had - had a delicious taste, not bitter at all. Service was good and the ambience got a little more exciting as the night went on. Very glad we finally tried it and will be sure to remember it next time I have a German food craving.

This is a lively place. Our party of six was seated immediately with reservations. The waitress was patient describing the meals and beers. Our food was served quickly and it was a feast. Authentic tasting sausages were my favorite. We will definitely recommend and be back for more.

Friendly staff, extensive German beer list (draught and bottle). The food was excellent and authentic yet accessible. The atmosphere is cool as well. It's a big place but the layout is suitable for busy times/events or quieter moments.

They may have a great beer selection here, but that is just as well since lots of it is needed to wash down the indifferent food. Schnitzels were overlooked and dry. The only food we enjoyed was the side salads.

went today with some relatives, really built it up. after walking around Philadelphia for a couple hours we were ready for some food. when we got there it was surprisingly empty except for the football crowd. sat promptly and the server came over, very nice. we looked over the extensive beer menu and ordered. first sign of problems, after ordering the server came back and the wife was told no ciders, no bottles in the place either. ok reorder. we wait 30 minutes to order the dinner menu and make our selections. ok good until server comes back and says two of our selections are not available. ok make new selections and 5 minutes later told that no the restaurants specials are not available either. so make new selection, not happy but resigned to events happening. ordered schnitzel and expected something thin and broad. well what we got was an inch thick piece of pork, breaded and fried but not a classic schnitzel. spaetzle was dry, slightly burnt. bottom line, server was great, beer was good, restaurant failed us. sorry, truth.

The beers got the stars, otherwise it would have been 0 stars. The food was awful and over-priced, and the service is mediocre. Never again!

We’ve travelled to a Germany many times and our son lived there for a year, so we were excited to try a German restaurant on our visit to Philadelphia. We were not disappointed. From the great bread to the sausages, cucumber salad, potato salad, and spaetzle. On the board with the wursts, I would have liked more potato salad and sauerkraut. If we ever come back to Philadelphia I would definitely try to come back. Our waitress was also very accommodating.

We have actually been here before and had a good experience. I don’t know if they were understaffed or what but we waited 2 full hours for our food to hit the table. When the food did finally come out it was dry and didn’t have the sides that were shown on the menu. It’s a shame because they do have a good German beer selection but they really dropped the ball. I don’t understand why a manager did not come out and address the long food wait time. Needless to say we will never be coming back.

We have visited the Brauhaus many times. It always delivers a good selection of lunch items. Excellent beer selection. The best part is that the waiters know quite a bit about the beer and they let you taste some samples before you buy if you are not sure.Lunch menu is the best. Dinner...not so much.

My Family recently met at the Brauhaus Schmitz during a Family Reunion Weekend in Philadelphia. Everyone enjoyed the variety of food, and they also have a wide selection of German beers/schnapps. My favorite was the standard wienerschnitzel and the desserts were also incredible. The service was prompt and professional, and the vibe is very German also.

Me and my family enjoyed a great meal on a busy Saturday evening. The place was full of people (one group celebrating a retirement). I got a little nervous when I was asked for a reservation, but they were able to fit us in. The menu was extensive offering a wide variety of German dishes. The food was excellent. The Service was fast, prompt, and personable. We truly enjoyed our time here and will eat here again when visiting the city.

We love German food and try to find all the good German restaurants when we travel. This one was the best! We ordered the schnitzel and brats. Both were outstanding and the sides were equally amazing! Our waitress did an awesome job of recommending drink and dinner selections and our food came out surprisingly fast! We loved this place and would go again!

I had heard much of this place but had doubted whether German food would meet my expectations. In the end it’s still German food: direct, no nonsense, uncomplex, BUT it’s fun pleasing food. The rabbit stew was rustic, warm and inviting. It was undersalted but that was easily fixed. The pre dinner bread is fantastic. My daughter’s spaetzle (fancy Mac and cheese) was the guy of the night. No surprise the beer list is great. Service was also very warm. I left wanting to come back and try some more.

Came here for business with an associate. Thought being Oktoberfest it would be the right place. Walked in and promptly seated by the hostess. Asked the waitress about the current beer offering and she said “I don’t know much about beer.” Sat there for two rounds and she showed zero enthusiasm. I got up to use restroom and found a small Biergarten out back that looked like it had potential. Well it didn’t, the bartender ignored us for 20 minutes until I asked if he was closed because he had put all the alcohol away. He said not yet but very soon, “I plan to be out of here at 8:30,” said the bartender. My plan was to order a dinner for each of us since we came out for for dinner. He begrudgingly took our order but ignored our drink request. I was watching the Red Sox game that was already on the TV, I know a Boston fan in Philly. Now the frosting on the cake, while watching the game the bartender hangs up the Haufbrauer Blue and White Flag in front of the TV. “Just getting ready for tomorrow. We have a big day.” I ask are you closing the back room, “yes it’s all done we’re waiting on you.” All the whole there were 35 patrons sitting out here eating and drinking. As I sit here more and more people ask for food and drink which is driving him crazy. Not sure why you would try to close a German bar during Oktoberfest at 8:30pm and tell patrons to come back tomorrow at noon. Every time someone orders something the Bartender sighs and acts annoyed. He has a long week ahead of him.

Visited on a Sunday and then just 2 days later - both for lunch. Sunday was good - food and service. Tuesday was not. Quite a disappointment - food was awful - dry, overcooked. Loved this spot and have been eating here whenever we’re in Philly - not sure if we’ll go back.

This was the least healthy meal that I have eaten for a very long time, but oh boy was it good! Brotzeit (mixed cold cuts) appetizer, really tasty and some items like the blackberry-anise spread that was unlike anything I have had before. Then their specialty, the Scheinshaxe (braised then roasted pork shank dumpling and sauerkraut and dumpling. Tender and flavorful on the inside, crispy on the outside. Loaded with fat and salt, of course, and a lot to eat, but just totally delicious. Neither my companion nor I (both hearty eaters) could finish our portion, and we somewhat regretted having had the appetizer, but we took the rest home in boxes. The service was absolutely perfect--our server was unobtrusive but somehow always knew when we needed a drink refill or something else. My only really minor complaint was that we were given a seat near the front door which was a little chilly on a cold December evening.

The food wasn't very good. It was cold and none of the items we ordered tasted that great. I think it might have been due to us going with a large group and having a buffet style meal. The food of others as we were leaving seemed to look alot better. Therefore I think we could have had a better experience if we ordered individually then their pre made collective food. I'd give it a try if you're interested in good german cuisine no doubt.

Three big Fs: Fun, Filling, Fast! This place is great! We came here during Oktoberfest, and had a great time! The place was thumping with festive music, was alternately decorated for the holiday and was exactly what you expect when you think of a German restaurant. The food was delicious, appetizers were served hot and fast and the food was extremely rich and filling. I highly recommend this place, and am hoping to visit again this year!

My family of 9 visited on a Saturday night. My brother’s German exchange student ordered some of her favorite traditional German food. The service was excellent and the all the food was delicious! I especially enjoyed our appetizer of fried cheese. The atmosphere seemed very German (I have never been there so I really cannot compare ☺️)

They have a novel size beer list and some of the best bratwurst I've had. Service is good and it's not too loud or crowded for dinner. One of my favorite spots.

We are from out of town and made a reservation on AUG 27th for our visit on SEP 26th. We were there at 7:30, the time of our reservation. No tables were available. We waited until after 8:00 to be seated. They alternately told us that there was "heavy walk-in traffic" and that it was busy due to the fact that it was restaurant week (which we didn't know in advance). We thought that maybe when one we made a reservation a month ahead of time to avoid exactly those kinds of issues, that we'd be seated ahead of the walk-in customers, but apparently not so. Because it was restaurant week we were told that we had no choice but to order items from the limited four course restaurant week menu, but also we were told by our waiter that we could order individual items from that menu if we did not want all four courses. We decided that I would order the full menu and that my wife would order individual items. When the waiter came back and took our order he told us for the first time that we both had to order the full four courses or both order individual items from that menu, but that we could not order one full menu and one meal of individual items. We regrouped and hurriedly decided to both order the full four course restaurant week menu. We both ordered the beet salad as our salad course. The waiter told us that there was no more beet salad. OK, we made an alternate selection and also ordered our other three courses at that time, including desert. Before desert our waiter asked if we would like coffee and my wife ordered decaf. The waiter came back and told us that they had run out of decaf. Mind you that this was still well before the time when they quit serving food, but apparently they were incapable of brewing a fresh pot of decaf for their customers. OK, given the take-it-or-leave-it situation, my wife decided to go with regular coffee with cafine. When the waiter brought the coffee he told us that there was no more apple strudel, the desert that we had ordered approximately an hour earlier. No beet salad, no decaf coffee, no apple strudel. Do you think that maybe if we had been seated at the time of our reservation and not over half an hour later that maybe, just maybe, they might still have had at least one of these? I guess it must not matter because no one there was too concerned.

Nice stop on a Sunday afternoon stroll down South Street. So many beers to choose from, I had the bartender pick for me and she did a great job providing an Oktoberfest that my taste buds agreed with. Had a snack of pretzel with crab dip.... no one loves pretzels more than me and this one was crispy on the outside and bread filled on the inside ... not any of that fast food style!

We had reservations for Saturday evening. We were a little early and the man handling the front desk was very accommodating in seating us relatively quickly. One of the people in my party is a huge Hofbrauhaus beer lover and stopped at the bar while we were waiting. He was disappointed that they didn't have his absolute favorite, despite it being on the menu. He did like the substitute the bartender suggested. We were seated in the large back room. Our waitress started out very impressively. She seemed knowledgeable and was very friendly. She even offered one of the people in my party a sample of a particular drink. Almost immediately after she took our order, another server dropped a plate on the floor. I don't know what happened, but right after that, he threw some other plates on the floor and walked out. I'm guessing that our waitress had to take up some (or all) of the slack because the service really suffered at that point. We didn't get our beverages (water, and the aforementioned sample) for at least 15 minutes. We received our food shortly thereafter. We had a problem at that point. There had been two forks and one knife on the table (we were a party of four). One of my party and I ordered soup. There were no spoons. When we flagged down the waitress, she brought one spoon. We had to ask a second time to get the second spoon. She never asked my friend if she liked the sample and wanted to order the alcoholic beverage (she did). The food was...just okay. My friends and I have all been to the Hofbrauhaus in Munich, as well as multiple authentic German restaurants in the U.S. We really didn't enjoy most of the food. The wursts all had a strange taste. The goulasch was quite spicy, but didn't taste like the goulasch I've had in Germany, Austria, Hungary, or in other German restaurants. A bright spot: the tomato cream soup was good. This restaurant was far more expensive than German restaurants that we've enjoyed in Washington DC, Maryland, and Las Vegas. One final issue: when we got the waitress to bring the bill, she charged $3 over the menu price for the second beer that my friend ordered. She adjusted the bill, but it was a kind of bitter end to a not-so-great evening.

Visited with friends. Really enjoyed their good beer and the food was dry good! Our waiter was very good. Would definitely return again! Also had their food at the Redding Market. 😊

Great service, great food, great beer, and great atmosphere. I had the sausage with spaetzel, and potato pancake. The housemade sausages are fantastic.

Went here before the Coldplay concert, and it was great to have all the pre-show beers. As I am not a big fan of German food or German beer, I went because my son wanted to check it out, and I had already had a great lunch. Well....it was fabulous. The service was as good as one could wish, the room was really good looking and the selection of beers was amazing. And, I had four different beers, and while I did not love any of them, I loved the selection and the vast number of choices/differences. In terms of food....another great win. They had lots of things I have never had before, and everything I tried was interesting. My guess is that if you were a connoisseur of German food, you might have a better/deeper understanding if this place was great or not, but for me, I am very, very happy to have gone there. Would I go again?....maybe not, but only because there are many other choices and I like pretty much every other style of food better. However, again, I am very thankful to have visited this establishment, and if you are looking for this style, or something different, give it a run....I am glad I did.

We enjoyed a delicious and filling dinner, and hope to come back in order to sit in the beer hall dining room, which seemed more festive. Our server was pleasant and helpful, although her estimation of how much the sausages weigh was quite incorrect...I think they weight more like 8 ounces each, not four. But we had six varieties and liked them all, especially the one with 7 herbs and the one with lamb. The sauerkraut was excellent, as was the potato salad. Two other folks had veal schnitzel, which also got rave reviews. One had the pepper sauce, which was excellent. The strudel was good. The only downside we felt was the pretzel, which was dense and just not as good as in Germany! And the spaghetti and meatballs ice cream is really not worthwhile. The beer was great of course, as was the selection.

We visited here from out of state and wanted something different. This place delivered. We started with the pretzel with cheese sauce, a new soup- dandelion and I had a vintage German double bock. All very good. The selection of German beers is amazing!! For entrees we had Sxhweonshaxa ( house pork speciality) and Omas Kasaspetzle (German pasta with three cheeses). Both excellent and as good as anything I have had on multiple trips do Germany. For dessert we had the German version of a brownie (a bit dry and not very chocolate) and apple strudel (very good) and a schnapps. We would give this place a 5 but the brownie disappointed and the server while attentive seemed not very familiar with the menu.

Great choice for lunch for a group of us who had all been to Munich over the years. Not just authentic and traditional meat selections, but excellent rothkohl, spaetzle, et all to accompany. Wide range of German bier on tap, of course. Friendly staff who helped with our meal choices, even given our familiarity with the cuisine. Reasonable price, good location on South Street, close to other activities.

The beer list was the best I've seen in the US and can purchase some in Liter sized mugs. The food was excellent as was the service.

Beer is awesome some draft beers only available in the USA here all drafts 4.00. Sausage sandwiches 4.00 with kraut and great mustards Megan bartender one of Philly's best

Went here for a birthday dinner with family. Everything, including beer and cocktails, dinner entrees, and dessert was just great. Even our non-fan of German food was happy with everything.

Walking down South St. and this place was calling me! Beautiful decor, nice & quiet atmosphere great food and great drinks!

I ordered the pork hock dinner which i love . This version was extremely salty ,my wife ordered a schnitzel and itwas very good will try the various sausage dinners next time in Philly

My first night in town, we walked over to Brauhaus for beer and a snack. I enjoy a flight in order to taste a variety so I choose the 101 flight which includes light to dark. All of them were delicious. The snack was a cheese and meat plate but the meats were all so intensely flavorful that it was not as enjoyable as I had expected. The cheeses were all tasty.

Not only one of the best selections of German beer on tap and bottles, but great explanations of the beer types as well. A fun place to go after work. The rye is very good, as were other appetizers including the cheese and pretzel. The local sausage was very good, as was the Brussels sprouts and sauerkraut. And dessert! The Black Forest cake was definitely made with a liberal amount of Kirsch, and excellent. Great food , reasonable prices, and good service. Highly recommended.

My wife and I ate here during our anniversary trip to Philly. We really enjoyed our meal. Our server Alyssa was fantastic. She was friendly and efficient. We had a fun time!

So lucky we found Brauhaus Schmitz! Really different and authentic. We had 10 month old with us and they had high chairs and plenty of room. Plating was amazing and our German combination platter was served on a wood plank and aptly called “Vesperbrett”. See pic. We sat by bar; napkins and utensils along with condiments are on every table so you set your own place setting and if your 10 month old knocks a utensil on the floor you instantly have access to another, lol. They had an authentically costumed one man band in the main dining room playing German music on an accordion. He saw our little girl and played 3 different children’s songs and allowed us to video tape it and it was a hit on my Facebook. Multiple spotless unisex bathrooms marked “WC” with airplane style “vacant - occupied” locks. Ample parking on street with credit card or cash kiosk; $2.50 per hour and you place receipt in window. We found Brauhaus Schmitz accidentally when our Big Bus Tours Guide “Zane” announced it was his favorite place in the whole city. Food was great!!! House salad dressing the best ever. Excellent coffee and deserts. See pics. Service by our waitress bringing food out was textbook perfect and she was in German outfit, but giving place 4 stars instead of 5 as our waitress seemed unhappy to serve us like she didn’t like us for some reason or was really nervous dealing with customers or around children. Just really weird. Definitely going back just will ask for different waitress next time.

We and other family members have been here many times over several years and never had a complaint. This time, however, every dish we had was bad and had to be sent back to the kitchen. On top of this, although the establishment owner was present and aware of the problems with our food, he never inquired of us nor left his seat to see what in the world was going on in the kitchen. Something was definitely not right. At least our server was apologetic, polite, and adjusted our bill accordingly.

My family and I went here for dinner. The place was great. There was a lot of beer to choose from. the food drinks, and service were great. Literally nothing to complain about. Just keep in mind it is a bit on the higher side in terms of price

We were supposed to have dinner there, but had drinks instead because we abruptly had leave. Anyhow. I am looking forward to going back, but in the meantime, looking over the menu, there were all the traditional German foods with lots of variety of Wurst, Pork, etc. There were probably 25-40 different imported beers on draft, bottled or canned. Parking is on the one way street (restaurant on the right heading east). If you are lucky for two hours max, unless you feed the meter again with credit card. Two hours, 5 bucks. Cheap for center city. My only complaint was the beer, (in my opinion) wasn't cold enough, but if this place is authentic, Europeans don't drink beer as cold as Americans doo.

We came here to attend a rehearsal dinner. Had a back room for the event. Extensive beer selection. Buffet of German classics. Only complaint is the Oompa band was a little too loud for such a small space. Had a great time.

My husband and I took a taxi here from our convention center area hotel. We very much enjoyed the traditional german food. We both had the weinerschnitzel and beer. The schnitzel was delicious, beer was great, and the homemade bread they brought out before the meal was delicious as well. We would def eat here again

My hubby is from balt Md his mom use to make sour beef dumplings his fav with tender thick beef & ginger snap sweet sauce fact closest to his mom is silver mini ng company in md.. but too far now to ride from philly! Well been meaning try the philly version here for long time..finally did - as hard to find sourbratten in philly but man this was horrendous!!! Watery sauce texture pure water yikes & beef seemed like flat processed meat not the tender chunk of beef that easily shreds! The dumpling u can choke on.. and at the price in total as a delivery was close $35 .. its pretty pathetic & waste of money… never will i ever … at this place sadly it hard to drive to silver mining nowadays but its head shoulder above this … this is hardly edible. But least we tried it here -U live & learn. Dogs will get leftovers if they like it lol

My husband and I enjoy going to Brauhaus Schmidt for any reason. Yesterday we were in Philly with his cousins from Germany and decided to end our day with dinner and drinks here. As always the staff was wonderful, our waitress Angela was awesome.

My friend and I had 2 different German beers which were excellent! We both had veal schnitzel. It was good but a little too thick for me. Dessert was bread pudding which was excellent. A little pricey but it is South Street! Service was a little slow!

I lived in Germany for 15 months many years ago. Have visited many times since. Love a good German meal, and that is exactly what we got at the Brauhaus. Long list of German beers on the menu. Great German menu, lots of tempting options, both for dishes as well as sides. My husband and I chose the Gulash and a sausage platter with red cabbage and bratkartoffeln. Our friend chose the sausage platter, too, and chose the sauerkraut. Portions were ample, so we got to try both the red cabbage and the sauerkraut. Both were excellent, as were the sausages (we got to try 3). Want to come back and try more of the dishes on the menu. Cute interior.

Met up with friends here and was impressed with the beers and the generous food portions. In fact we couldn’t finish our meals but they were delicious and authentic.

The beer selection is quite sizable, with a few dozen unique German beers on draft and more in bottle. The interior is quite stylish and tastefully decorated with German beer memorabilia, with a large beer garden attached "out back in the pond" if you will. Overall the beer and aesthetic is pleasing. The service is really quite embarrassing however. They have many staff available who mostly stand around and chat with each other. Our server was a very, very friendly guy who was very personable and helpful when he was at our table. Though, he was rarely there, and judging by other tables and the front desk this was a common thing. The service needs dramatic improvement with efficiency.

This reminded us of the typical German beer hall - noisy :). But upside is that the food is good - we loved the sausages, sauerkraut and the roasted pork knuckle. Kids had the chicken schnitzel, which was just ok, they said. The beer selection was fabulous though! Service was also good. Over all, if we start craving for good ole German food and beer, we'll be back!

Never been as impressed with a 'German' restaraunt in America as with this place! Thanks for providing an authentic dining experience with an incredible beer selection! Loved the Brezel and Spätzle!

Parking is not easy near this restaurant. OK, Saturday evening, but we were shown to a table at the far end of the balcony as far away from the restaurant ambience as it was possible to get. The poor waiter had to stoop underneath the ceiling to serve us. Our first two requests for beer were met with "just gone off" The food was ok, typically Germanic without reaching any culinary heights. My chocolate tort never arrived which rather summed up a disappointing evening.

Went with my daughter it was crowded but we were able to get a seat. Beer is excellent with a large menu, and the food was terrific. We shared the large sausage plate with spätzle and sauerkraut .Awesome food and drink and the atmosphere is terrific.

After spending time at the German Christmas market, Brauhaus was exactly what we were looking for! Excellent beer selection including pre-selected flight options. Mix and match sausage entrees that allow you to try up to 9 different sausages. A member of our party did not eat pork, but he was able to find a delicious option that suited his dietary restrictions. Fun spot! Be sure to check out the back bar!

We came here for dinner during restaurant week. It was four courses for $35. We started with 5he dandelion soup (good) and the Hungarian goulash (very good). I had the potato pancake for the second course (not very good and room temper@ture) and hubby had the beet salad (he enjoyed it). For the entree I ordered the fish - the char. It was a small portion, but it was good. My husband had the sausage plate which he thought was OK. We took two desserts home to enjoy although w3 did not enjoy either the apple strudel or the Black Forest cake. Small and tasteless portions.i The service was good. The IPA my husband had was good. My Chardonnay was ok but not great.

Very pleased with a recent visit to this German restaurant on South Street. I wanted to treat an old friend to dinner on a Sunday evening while she was in town. Her choice was an authentic German meal, just like her mom made. We were not disappointed. The food was excellent, both in taste and presentation, and the service was perfect. It was restaurant week in Philadelphia, so we had to choose from a limited menu. I had the Zwiebelbraten (Braised Brisket) with red wine onion gravy, spatzle and braised red cabbage. It was wonderful! When you go, I suggest the Apfelstrudel (Apple). It is to die for. They have a large choice of beers and the overall cost for two was considerably under $100.

Great place! Food was amazing! The server we had wish I recalled his name was so nice. He explained everything on menu to us and beer choices were spot on. They need another few darts for the dart board though lol

All enjoyed the food-all dishes outstanding and the choice of brews unbelievable and knowledgeable staff. The issue was the noise!!!😞 Granted we were there on a Saturday nite but we couldn't have a conversation due to sporting event that was on tv downstairs. In the future I would try a lunch or more aware of sporting events.

Unique menu and beer selection! We loved how many choices there were for beer. Bottles and tap. Tried the flights to start. Sorted by taste. Our table tried them all and everyone found their favorite. Appetizers are awesome. Try the hot Bavarian pretzel with beer cheese dip. Food was delicious and generous. If you are not familiar with German food the menu does describe what it is and how it’s prepared. The staff is friendly and answers questions with enthusiasm. Apple strudel was ok. Cheese cake awesome. Great location right on colorful South Street. Be sure to pay to park on the streets and watch your time limit. Parking tickets handed out quickly. Restaurant was clean and comfortable. No booths. Big banquet size dining room in back. Balcony tables for two overlooking the bar area. We would definitely come back to try something new.

Saurbraten just the way I like, tasty and tender, cut with a fork. Waiter was very helpful with beer list and other items on menu. Enjoyed our meal, remember its german food so it is filling and hearty

Pitiful. Made reservation 1 month in advance and confirmed the day before and the day of reservation. When party arrived (Early no less) we were told our table was given to someone else. Party members had travelled 1-2 hours, not even an apology. I sent this review directly to Resy and never received a response from restaurant.

Visited Brauhaus Schmitz during a recent City Brew tour in Philly. Nice German atmosphere with food and beer options. The German beer was excellent!

try the mixed meat dish, but you will need at least 4 people there is a lot of food...it was a good selection,...nicely washed down with some beer :-)

Very authentic German bar, very friendly staff too. The food was just okay, but the beer selection is wonderful and the service was great. Definitely a great place to go for a drink!

My daughter took us here because she knew I loved sausage. Overall, it was a disappointment. My sausage was excellent, but my wife's chicken was dangerously under cooked and raw inside. Additionally, the new waiter spilled a coke all over my wife. The senior waiter apologized and gave a free dessert but overall the experience was a bit disappointing.

Had my usual: a mixed platter of two wursts (here, weisswurst and a house-made bratwuest) with spaetzle (noodle dumplings) and sauerkraut. Excellent.

What a really nice looking authentic German restaurant in the middle of weirdo south street. Lot's of beers to choose from! The food was good, the portions were large and the wait staff was on point. However, the restaurant was very loud inside and it was hard to carry on a conversation and the music they played was lame and their sound system was horrible which detracted from the experience.

Happy Hour is 5-7 PM great beer at a reasonable price. I definitely would recommend the beer. Food - the appetizers were excellent the Pomme Fritz with mushroom gravy is easily enough for two people and the pretzel and mustard was excellent. We had the weinerschitzel with spätzle and cucumber salad, all of it was good but have had better overall German food in the area. Honestly the highlight was the beer and the prices. The wife had wine, our suggestion is if you think you will be drinking more than three glasses at the table, buy the bottle it is a much better buy and you get roughly five pours which is a much better buy than by the glass. Bartenders were great, offered great advice and just generally great service. Meagan helped us most but the other bartenders were equally helpful and pleasant. I would recommend all beer drinkers give it a whirl.

Had dinner at Brauhaus Schmitz on a recent trip to Philly. Couldn't have been a better German meal. Food, beer and service were outstanding! You'll really like this friendly restaurant with it's specials and huge beer variety. Prosit!

Authentic German cuisine served by friendly and knowledgeable wait staff in an ambiance that recreates a German beer hall very faithfully. Located on the southern edge of the city centre, the Brauhaus has the feel of a neighbourhood hangout which, according to the article posted on the wall, is what the young married couple who own the place, is what they were aiming for. The owners spent two years in Germany working in similar establishments to the one they've opened. A sausage on a bun with Sauerkraut was $12, and a draft from the extensive beer and wine list will cost around $7.

Stopped in on the way home , great location , close to downtown and the river , but parking is difficult to be found !!! The food was great and just as good as I have ate in Germany . But the service was even better . Made up special plates , everything was hot and spent time explaining how they made most of their own food . And the cost was reasonable . This is a must try when in town .

An excellent variety of sausages and beers. I recommend the potato salad, spatzle, and wienerschnitzel. If adventurous, try the rabbit stew.

Having spent spending many months in Germany, I could say thing or two about German bratwurst. I understand that we don't have the same exact ingredients like spices and meat. However, the flavors are way off including some other dishes like jäger schnitzel. I don't think Germans eat spicy sausage like one serves at brauhaus Schmitz. I made two separate visits and both times I was disappointed with their meals. On the other hand, they have an extensive selection of German beers.

We were in this place 3-4 times during our visits Philly last 2 years. It was good food, good service, nice atmosphere. Last night we were there again, the place is still same, crowded but I dont know maybe the chef changed or what, the food was disgusting, we never will go back

This informal restaurant combines standard German cuisine and beer hall fare. The food was well prepared and the service excellent. More than 30 beers are on tap. The restaurant has an eating area in the front with tables and chairs for about 30 people. There is a long bar and a long bench with small tables. The rear of the restaurant has a lovely decorated diningroom. This is a popular place so make a reservation. It can get crowded and lively during televised international soccer matches. You'll be entertained.

Awesome gem in the city of Brotherly Love. Good beer selection, nice feel, well decorated. A friend of our is from Germany and he raved about the food choices. The charcuterie platter was divine, easily enough for 2, and with bread, beer or wine a meal in itself. The music was a surprise.

Brauhaus Schmitz has been in Philly for quite a while. My family and I like to have dinner at this location whenever we're in the mood for German food. They have a huge list of beer available, and all of the German classics. The waitstaff are even dressed as if they were in Bavaria.

Great selection of German beers my girlfriend who knows more about beer then me can get her smokey beer from Germany.Great food good atmosphere nice bar to sit and relax. Bartenders are friendly and knowledgeable about different beers nice draft selection as well.

The German food was spot on! Very authentic. My German aunt couldn't get over how amazing the food and decor was. We ate here twice in a 4 day stay.

Food was fine - some special; some just okay. Service was terrible and weird. Very cold windy Friday night. Restaurant was mostly empty. They sat us right near the door - every time someone came in was freezing. We asked to move to the back of the restaurant - we could see dozens of open tables. There were only 4 of us - waiter literally rolled his eyes and told us it was not possible. We just moved then after speaking to other employees who told us our waiter was a "jerk" and "weird." There were no actual adults on a Friday night shift -- seemed like the staffing of a Burger King. Would never ever return.

This was one of my favorite restaurants during our visit to Philadelphia. It might even be my very favorite! The food, service, and ambience were all wonderful! We made a reservation, although we were there kind of late on a Sunday night, and a reservation may not have been completely necessary, but I was still glad to have one, because we were seated at a perfect table, which had been reserved just for us. Our server was truly delightful. I wish I could remember her name, but she was super friendly, attentive, patient in answering our questions, and took the time to explain many of the menu items to us (she could probably tell we were novices when it comes to German food, haha). The ambience is basically "German beer hall", which is fun. The room is long and narrow, with a bar running most of the length of one wall, and tables along the walls and in the center of the room. There is an upstairs seating area, too, overlooking the main floor. I imagine the room can get noisy and lively when it is full, but since it wasn't too crowded when we were there, the noise level wasn't high, which was great. But definitely the best part was the food!!! So good!!! My husband and I shared the "Six sausage platter", where we got to select six different sausages. Offering such a platter on the menu is a great idea, because so many of the sausages sounded good, and we wanted to try a lot of them! They were all good, and we had a lot of fun sampling them. My favorites were the cheese-filled one and the smoked pork and beef. My husband's favorites were the spicy sausage and the one with bacon in it. We also got the weiner (aka "hot dog"), which was also great, and the sausage with herbs, which our waitress warned us was green in color (she was right!), and which was also good, but I wasn't as crazy about the texture of that one. The sausage platter came with potato salad (SO good!!! We ate it all!) and sauerkraut, which neither of us ate, haha. I also ordered a side of potato pancakes (Amazing!!! Came with yummy applesauce, too!), and my husband ordered a side of spaetzle, which he thoroughly enjoyed. Needless to say, we did not eat everything, but it was wonderful to be able to sample so much yummy food! It is, perhaps, not a place to go if you are on a diet -- but why in the world would anyone choose a German restaurant if they're on a diet? This is a place to just relax, enjoy some amazing German food and atmosphere, and be happy to be in the wonderful city of Philadelphia. We can't wait to return to Brauhaus Schmitz next time we're in Philly!

My boyfriend and I came in on a Friday night at around 10 and the place was pretty much empty. Not that we minded. It's a nice change of pace from a NYC bar, where empty seats/tables are a luxury. I was actually able to breathe here. We only came for drinks and decided on the two samplers. Each comes with four 3-oz. beer samples that they pick. I can't remember which beers they were, but none of them were outstanding to me. In fact, most were a bit skunky. So I'm thinking that these "beer samplers" are really just the kegs of unpopular beer that they couldn't get rid of, and then they'll throw in one popular beer just for good measure. Makes me wonder where all these great reviews come from? Maybe it's from the food...

Not much more to say. The poor service overshadowed the food. But the potato pancake and the goulash were excellent. Unfortunately everyone's entree (7 of them) was cold due to the slow service. Looks like we will move on to the #2 rated on Trip Advisor and hope for a much better experience.

Great German Beer & Food! The service was excellent too! Their beer menu is huge and they offer tastes of the draft beers which was helpful. We were a group of four so we went with: SCHLACHTPLATTE - BUTCHER'S FEAST FOR FOUR pork shank, smoked pork chop, one of each of our sausages, bacon sauerkraut, potato dumplings. Everything was delicious but the potato dumpling. This was a great way to try all the different options and there was leftovers too. If you like German food, this is a must!

I thought I had gone back to Germany. A fantastic selection of German beers on draft as well as bottled. The bratwurst was completely authentic. The service is friendly. I highly recommend this spot.

I really liked it here. It has an authentic German feel without killing you with it. The beer is awesome. The menu has a nice mix of German and American fare. I had the bratwurst and I thought it was quite good. My friend ordered the pretzel and said it was hard but I thought that maybe we were expecting the kind you buy on the street. But other than that, the rest of us loved our meal. The staff was very friendly and efficient.

After nice visit at City Hall in Philadelphia we decided to have few draft beers. We were so thirsty after out trip from NYC that wide offer of good quality draft beer made in craft breweries was our main goal. City Hall guide recommended us Brauhaus Schmitz. The bar is very nice and really big with more separate rooms, their beer offer is really great and most of them are made in Germany. Our bar tender was trully polite and affable and what is more waitresses were dressed in typical Bavarian clothing. Although amosphere was busy we were not disturbed by other guests. Beer which we tasted was fantastic and also food we decided to have was like cooked at home. Hungarian goulash and potatos pancakes were so good as if we had it in middle east Europe were this dishes came from. We can fully recommend also for big groups.

Everything from the food to the atmosphere to the beer was delicious! When the beer menu is bigger than the food menu and everything is still delicious, thank you!

Great fresh beer taste and great german authentic food and beers. Food are very good. Restaurant does offer several great events Starkbierfest, Mayfest and Oktoberfest

I attended an event here recently and was impressed - I did not expect to find a German themed pub in South Philly! Overall, a great atmosphere - the servers all dress in traditional style German dress, the food was excellent (with a sausage / wurst menu!) and the beer was good. Recommended - I'll be back.

On the menu it says this restaurant serves German food with an American flare. We all would have preferred the straight German food. The kasaspatzle was very good- light and cheesy. The sausages were good. The potato salad was awful , we love all kinds of potatoes and potato salads - a good German potato salad would have been soooo much better. The beers were good and the atmosphere was fun-80’s music! Haha! The schnitzels were varied- some liked one better than the other. We didn’t have appetizers or desserts. Would we be back?- maybe. My daughter said she read somewhere on the menu or on a sign that this was voted the best German restaurant in the nation a couple yrs back- I don’t think so....

While the food was descent it was not exactly worth the cost and was rather mediocre as far as German food goes, strudel was room temp, pretzel tasted exactly like super pretzel you microwave from shoprite, I’m not even exaggerating on that one. But what really provoked me to right this review was the incredibly poor service we received from our waitress. When paying this kind of money for a meal I would expect a waitress that at least took notice after 10 mins of sitting and staring into space that we were out of beer and finished our meal. Most importantly she was only serving three or four tables and it was not a packed evening with half the tables open. It wasn’t worth even ordering another beer because we knew by the time we got it, it would have been another 15 mins.
Outstanding birthday dinner
The food, ambiance, and service were outstanding. Christopher and Brauhaus Schmidts took great care of my husband and I for my birthday meal. If you love German beer and food, Braushaus Schmidt is the place to go on Philadelphia.
