A+!

By Ali B |

It is my first time visiting San Francisco, and I'm so grateful to the manager of another restaurant in town who pointed us in the direction of this place! There's nothing on the outside to draw attention, and it feels like a locals only spot... Which is great to be away from the usual touristy stops! Highly recommend. Just the right amount of food. 👍🏼

It can be hard to find since there are no signs, but the burgers are worth it

Small Restaurant, Big Find!

By Jim K |

The Brazen Head was recommended to us by the hotel we were staying in. We were not sure what to expect as we were told it was Italian but I would call it more American fare than Italian. We had Grilled Pacific Salmon Filet with sweet basil beurre blanc (with baked potato and sauteed veggies) and Petrale Sole with Thyme and Cherry Tomatoes (with Chive Mashed potatoes and spinach)entrees and they were both well prepared and cooked. All topped off with a slice of carrot cake. All in all this was a great dinner as far as the food was concerned. The restaurant can be a bit noisy as the bar is integrated into the restaurant area. So if you are looking for a quiet, romantic dinner this might not quite be the destination. But if you are looking for a solid dinner with good service this would be a fine selection. And a note... they do not take credit cards. Only cash or debit.

Dinner

This place is a gem, you can barely see it though and it was right across the street from our motel. They serve dinner until late ,which is a plus if you are trying to get alot of sightseeing done during the day.Was very dark in there so I was not able to see how it really looked, there were alot of old pictures on the walls and the ambiance was nice.Service friendly, the food took quite awhile to arrive, but was worth the wait. The drinks here are strong Would eat here again.

A hidden gem!

By BayAreaGal |

I sure wish we discovered this place earlier--it's consistently terrific! It's a small, dark and cozy London-style restaurant with only ~15 tables. At first glance, it looks like a cool neighborhood pub for a beer, but who knew the food would be so delicious??l Although they offer high-brow fare on the menu, my husband is positively addicted to the burger. He says it one of the highest quality in the city. No pub grub here! The fish specials are always a delight. And we love that it's open late. Only problem is getting a table during dinner hours since the place is small, and the bar is always crowded. This is our "go to" restaurant when we want great food but want to wear jeans, go casual and "lay low".

Food is to die for

By Oceanguest |

We stumled upon this restaurant by chance just because it was on the visinity of our hotel. But it was one of the best restaurants we visited in California. Service was amazing - they gave us a table even though we havent booked ahead. And food was out of this world.

Late night

By Rolf A |

A wonderful neighborhood restaurant with a late night kitchen. The wine list is reasonably priced and suits the menu's prices. Both the chicken and filet mignon were very good, even by San Francisco standards.

Great food and staff and a good place to meet people

By Marathonman13 |

I was introduced to the Brazen Head by a friend who lives in San Francisco several years ago. I go there every year when visiting friends and my mom. I haven't had a bad meal (the menu isn't gigantic like some places so is not trying to be all things to all people - several good choices and they do them well - I think I had an eggplant dish which was very reasonable and a great portion - maybe even an appetizer I think. There beef is very good also) there yet and the staff at the bar are very good people - attentive and good conversationalists - so I almost always sit at the bar. This last time I was on my own and met 3 really interesting people who I had long conversations with. This has happened while sitting in the restaurant area also which had a very cozy intimate feeling. It can be quite busy as it is a very popular spot and does not have a sign outside so you have to know the address or that it is on the corner of Buchanan and Greenwich. I don't remember if they take reservations but there can be a lineup so hang out on the bar first and strike up a conversation. It is a fun lively place and a must if you are in the city and like the Marina district which nowadays is hopping with great pubs restos and interesting shopping on Chestnut. Just superb!!! They also own Liverpool Lil's which is maybe a mile west and also has a cool atmosphere with a patio in good weather and larger bar/pub area with small restaurant seating at back - again great atmosphere and lively crowd.

WONDERFUL!

By Diana P |

When my husband and I visited San Francisco, I was in a wheelchair because of a broken leg. Hubby found this "hidden" little place, and asked if it was w/c accessible. He was told to call ahead 20 min, and it would be. (Hmmm???) So we did. When we got there, the owner placed a little home-made ramp just wide enough for the wheelchair to make it over a small step into the dining area. The prices were surprisingly low for SF. We ordered the small fillet mignon. Oh My !! It was plated beautifully---like a 5 star restaurant---and tasted like it was from a "10 star" restaurant ! BRAVO to the chef! There were so many places to go for dinner in SF----but this place was so very wonderful that we went back again the next evening. Thanks for a delightful experience, all.

Good Pub Grub

By AcePortland_OR |

A local place with convivial atmosphere. Decent pub grub in a characterful setting with neighborhood history.

Great place with an old world feel

This is a small place that serves GREAT food. The prime rib was cooked just right. Nice and pink with great flavor. The water we had was just great! The menu is full of all the right things. You cannot go wrong.

Local attraction

By pammundell |

I love this little place. From the outside you would not know there's a restaurant inside. I think this is definitely a locals favorite. Service is great and so is the food. No frill good American meals. And the price is very reasonable. The atmosphere is small, dark, cozy and authentic.

A hidden gem of a steakhouse!

By aamaris13 |

We had the NY Strip and the 5oz field mignon and they were amazing (the mashed potatoes and green beans were delicious as well). This place is one of the few locations open late and their food is delicious. The service is equally wonderful. A gem!

Old school, perfect every time.

By Triphoss |

Another great experience at brazen head. We love the menu and the staff. One of the few places left to just relax and enjoy dinner and not feel guilty if you are there late. I'm a big fan of the prime rib with a side of the pepper steak sauce! The bar staff pours a mean Manhattan, the waiters are always on point. Brazen head never let's you down, just don't try to rush it! If it takes 45 min to get a table... Just have another Manhattan and settle in.

Love their hamburgers and I love there isn't a sign!

1st Time After Living in SF 12 Years!

By Neilly R |

Amazing food, culture, ambiance. Small (11 tables??, and a bar) unmarked 'salty' awesome place. First time at this establishment 12 years living in San Francisco!! I will not belabor a review. If you are not feeling satisfied, happier, more 'cuddled' after a drink and meal here..... then you're in a comma. Perfect little long-standing neighborhood place that hits the mark on every mark. I'ld be willing to bet there are more satisfied customers who leave here than the alternative! It's a place I'm considering leaving my estate towards its preservation, seriously!

Great Place!!

By Old Dad |

Excellent place, nice little pub to have a quick one while we wait, and excellent prime rib. 100% happy Price was reasonable for the service and the great food.

Hidden Treasure in SF

By Babs B |

This is the best totally hidden place you will ever find. If someone didn't show it to me I would have never seen it. There's no signage or markings of any kind outside the building. You need to know where the door is. If you can find it, I guarantee you will love it. The food is fantastic and staff over the top friendly. It's in the Cow Hollow area of San Francisco on the corner of Buchanan & Greenwich. A very intimate little family owned bar & restaurant with a bartender named "Jimmy" whos been there for years. 99% of their business are locals, not tourists. So shhh let's keep this place our little secret . Don't tell anyone else ....

Comfortable, neighborhood gem with great pub fare

By stan w |

My wife and I love the Brazen Head for the warm welcoming atmosphere and consistent pub fare that we have experienced during visits over the past decade and a half. It is a neighborhood gem - with no signs outside - with patrons included all ages - young children to old folks and everyone in between. This is not what you would call high-end gourmet dining, but excellent comfort food, tasty, and moderately priced. My wife had beef bourguignon and the flavor was outstanding, although it appeared more as a beef stew. I had boneless prime rib; some of it was a tad chewy, but much of it melted in my mouth. Note that it takes no credit cards. We will return the next time we travel thru San Francisco.

Sit at the bar if you can

By Patty L |

We enjoyed watching the bartender while we were eating. I had the sirloin and my husband had the pork chop. Both were wonderful. This is a neighborhood bar, it doesn't even have a sign out front.

Cool Neighborhood Restaurant-Bar

By LarryWilder |

We were given the name of the Brazen Head by a diner at Danko's a night earlier. He said you "must go" and see what a real SF place is like. He warned us... "there is no sign on the building, so keep your eyes open for the address." He was right, it was hidden and special. The outside of the place is well kept and the inside is what you'd expect from a "hang-out". The walls are decorated with sports-stuff. Great bobble heads, lots of signed baseballs and neat old pictures. The food was hearty and well prepared. The menue was a nice offering of fish, meat and basic vegetables and dessert was not disappointing. If you make it to San Fran you should try the Brazen Head.

Awesome dinner

By Deb G |

Our dinner was just awesome. Service was excellent, efficient and quick. Only problem was the excessive noise from the bar patrons. Would recommend to anyone looking for wonderful food at a reasonable price.

Old-school local hangout with excellent food

By Laura H |

Brazen head is tucked into a non-descript corner of the Marina district and doesn't put its name on the door. You step inside into a small restaurant with old, dark wood paneling, a cozy bar, and an old-fashioned attitude. Hipsters and bros are welcomed but please don't act like doofuses, you'll kind of make a fool of yourself, because this is just not that kind of place. Service and other patrons are warm and friendly and there are regulars at the bar. The food is fine but I go for drinks and a snack and some ambience - nothing wrong with that.

Surprisingly awesome local dining establishment

By Nelrak |

We stayed at Capri Motel and got on Trip Advisor for restaurants close to our hotel. We happened to be 80 feet from Brazen Head, even though we didn't know it. There is a menu by the door but other than that very little indications of what was behind the doors. We were shocked to find a very quaint yet alive dining venue passed the doors. The food was great and so was the service. The lighting in the dining area was not very bright but it added to the ambiance of this eatery. The bar was kind of loud due to Golden State was playing in the NBA Playoffs while we were eating but guess that would be expected. I would suggest anyone wanting an above average meal dine at Brazen Head and enjoy the experience as it is a unique one.

Nice place to Eat

Nice cosy bar and restaurant serving decent food served by willing staff.Quite expensive mind you everything is in San Fran

Hidden gem

By Janice D |

A nondescript little bar restaurant near our hotel, we called in for a drink a couple of nights ago and had the rib eye sliders, delicious. Last night we had dinner there, I had the petite fillet mignon and my husband had the pork cutlet, both were delicious. Tonight (our last night in SF) we called in again, salmon sliders and the Brazen burger along with a couple of drinks, friendly staff, nice atmosphere, definitely recommend this place.

Disappointed

By Denisa T |

Nothing extraordinary. It is quite overpriced. I do not recommend the place for a gourmet experience ...

A little sheltered harbor in the midst of San Francisco!

By bazi43 |

Great intimate atmosphere, wonderful food, and often rockstar sightings. This place has limos lined up around all the corners when the big rock bands are in town. Great food & an extensive bar. What's not to love?

Great Food and Late Dimning

By Jim A |

We got into SF late and went here for dinner at about 10:30. The food was excellent and it featured great service

Great quiet spot with solid food..

By Done_with_shoveling |

We loved the atmosphere--low lighting, wood paneling and nice wooden tables; great old school vibe. The food is solid, although I did not find it superb. We had a really nice server. We went here right when they opened with our toddler and they were very accommodating in terms of a meal for him. However, I would say that we left at the right time as it is clearly not a restaurant designed for small children.

Great service, great food!

By Selena C |

Great service and amazing food -- love that there seem to be so many regulars who love this place! Cozy spot for a nice long dinner. No reservations so arrive early and if you have a big group, it's probably best to call ahead and talk to the staff -- they're very friendly and accomodating despite the no reservations.

A local gem

By AlbaBL |

This was our second visit to Brazen Head and we love this little pub. It fills up quickly when they open and if you want the Prime Rib, get there on the early side before they run out. All meals were enjoyed (prime rib, steaks, burgers) and the service is excellent. If you pay cash, you can avoid the credit card fee they assess. Can't wait to return.

Excellent find!

By AKim |

Great place for dinner! Loved the vibe and ambiance there. Food was delicious - 3 of us had the prime rib & 2 of us had the chicken marsala. All delicious!! The French onion soup was soooo good! Our waiter was Brian - he provided attentive, quick (without rushing) and friendly service. Parking is tight with this place being in a primarily residential area. We got lucky & found a spot across the street. If I did not see a picture of the front of this restaurant, I could have missed it because it does not look like a restaurant. We were happy to find a great restaurant away from the busier areas of the City - Embarcadero, Union Square, Fisherman’s Wharf - and we will be back!!

Great find!

By Laurel T |

We had dinner here a year or so ago. Found ourselves in the Marina area, late, and I think we Yelped it. Really don't remember how we found it, but were so glad we did! The atmosphere was vintage English pub and so was the food. It was delicious, and seems that our family party of five got out for a surprising low price. As a side note, when we returned to SF last weekend (our son goes to USF so we're sort of frequent visitors) we stayed at the Capri Motel right across the street. It's also a good, if noisy, bet. This time we didn't have dinner at the Brazen Head (too many things to explore in "The City!") but did finish a very late evening there. The neighorhood is quite the party place on Saturday nights. The bar is a quintessentially English tavern and I think it must look exactly like it did when it was built so long ago. Killer White Russians, by the way - thanks bartender!

Over Cooked Prime Rib

By davmar97 |

We ate dinner here on a recent week night. We both ordered the corn and crab chowder and the prime rib. The chowder was lukewarm and the prime rib overdone and dry (ordered medium and medium rare.) The table and bar service was very good.

Lovely Friday night meal

By McGookie |

Brazen Head was recommended by a friend who'd lived in SF, and was every bit as good as he said. Friendly, low key and good food, who could ask for anything more?

Great food, great service

By 4thturn |

Not exactly a tourist spot and that's part of what makes the Brazen Head a great find. It's a dark, speakeasy sort of interior with a great staff and some very good food. For the complete experience you need to sit at the bar and chat with the bartenders and locals, they'll treat you like an old friend. We had a great time watching Game 7!

Where everybody knows your name...

By bbchea |

A reasonably priced neighborhood bistro featuring outstanding steaks and a full bar. Locals pack this place nightly. Tourists, on the other hand, seem to have no idea where it is. Why? For one thing, you'll need a car, or better yet, take a cab since parking will be a problem. And don't bother looking for outdoor signage, because there isn't any. But you can't miss it...there will probably be a line out of the door. So make a reservation. Cheers!

I really like this place. Visited late on Monday night, 10 pm) but I had great food, great drinks, good talk with the bartender. 👍

wow - much better than we expected!

By jackie w |

we were staying at the motel just across the road - and asked if there was anywhere locally where we could eat. So we walked in - 20 yards from where we were staying - Saturday night - WOW! - it was buzzing - one bartender (because the other one had been stuck in traffic) doing the most amazing service all on his own. The first time in my life I had a "dirty martini" (when they put olive juice in with the gin/martini) - he had such a sense of humour, so that, no matter how long you had to wait at the bar (and it wasn't that long) no-one complained. The other bartender turned up and ended up carrying out a drunken teenager (literally carrying him out onto the street) - everyone cheered. We asked for a table and got one within 30 minutes - the food was really good - and yes, maybe a bit pricey, but we were so entertained. - and - yes, slightly dark - but it was absolutely not a problem - we had such a good time there. The food was very good - I had fish, husband had meat and it was all delicious - wines good. You get what you pay for in California, and we certainly got value for money and some good (free) entertainment We liked it so much that we took our californian friends there for a last drink the night after - great atmosphere

Excellent Dinner

By Larry Y |

I have no idea why anyone would give this establishment less than 5 stars. My wife and I had steak and both were made to perfection as we ordered, as well as the rest of the meal. The young waiter was friendly and with excellent service. The atmosphere is a friendly neighborhood place, where you can take your family and enjoy the evening meal.

Unbeatable atmosphere!

By Fester14 |

Great place for a romantic night out to get away from fast food and fishermanns wharf.. The interior is like an old ship and the food is pretty good as well.. I had a nice steak! Maybe Brazen head should update their beer card and get some more beers and there was only two tapped beers.. It seems like the place where good beers will fit in...

I have discovered the place by chance since there is no sign or anything out. Small but cosy and some great food. Open till late hours.. good single malt collection..

Don't miss Brazen Head!

By vamshillingford |

You won't find this place without having found it on Tripadvisor or similar. It sits on a quiet corner about six blocks from Fishermans Wharf. The welcome and attentiveness is second to none, and the food is excellent. Well worth taking that short walk away from the Wharf and the expensive tourist traps.

A little disappointing

By MichaelClothier |

I am staying in the area with my parents, after reading a few reviews though this sounded a good place for dinner. My mum had a salad, listed were tomato's but none showed up they were out. My dad had an Angus Ribeye Steak, it was not overly tender, was undercooked and generally didn't taste great. My meals were ok, I had the tuna tartare, and a beef stew. They were out of tap beer I ordered so had a bottle, I ordered a red wine, they were out, so had to choose another. Service was good, just lacking in the food and drink department. Mood of place and general feel was good.

Hidden treasure

By andioverton1 |

I called ahead for a reservation and learned that they don't take any, but they asked what time and how many. When our party of 5 arrived, a table was waiting. "You sounded so nice on the phone!" said the bartender. From excellent drinks, to a waitress who took no notes then served our orders, including various shared dishes without a glitch, to the superb food, who could ask for more?

Wonderful Old San Francisco!

By Liz W |

Such a wonderful old San Francisco restaurant! Cozy, intimate with great service and delicious food! We each ordered something different - scallops, chicken Marsala, shrimp scampi, and a hamburger- everything was prepared perfectly and served hot. We ordered the pork belly and mushroom tart appetizers which were delicious. Attentive service topped off the evening. We will definitely return our next trip to San Francisco!!

Wonderful!

This neighborhood eatery was well beyond expectation! Food, spirits and staff were excellent, especially for the moderate prices. Highly recommend!

Friendly and Cozy Cow Hollow Neighborhood Bar

By Gene B |

Have been here twice now, once to sit at the bar where the regulars and bartender were extremely friendly, then back another night for a hefty and delicious dinner. It's small, intimate, dark but also very lively and friendly. Excellent place.

Memories!

By Urban Dog |

Some long time friends finally let me join them at the Brazenhead. It had been decade since I was last there. It is a warm and welcoming neighborhood restaurant that treats everybody like they belong. The dinner was excellent and I hope to go back.

We came for the Prime Rib!

By Chummy2242 |

Get there early as they do not take reservations. Please be aware that they will not seat you unless your entire party is there. Large portion; food was okay.

Favorite Hideaway

By mmb198 |

I returned to San Francisco after having lived here several years ago, and was so happy to see that the Brazen Head is still thriving. Very small, local watering hole with a limited but delicious menu. Bartender and waitress seems to know everyone who walks in the door. A great find, and reasonably priced.

A Lovely Restaurant

By Dougeejay |

We were staying at the Motel Capri just over the road from the Brazen Head. We had no idea it was there until walking back from Fishermans Wharf early one evening. We noticed lights on and people sitting eating and lo and behold it was a restaurant! Earlier in the day we had walked straight past! We ate there the following evening and luckily we got a table straight away. Fabulous interior with an old pub feel to it, it's not a big place but it feels intimate thanks to the decor and lighting. A very warm welcome from the staff and our waitress was really nice and attentive. We had cocktails followed by a lovely meal and a bottle of wine. It was the last night of our trip and really crowned off what was a lovely holiday. It's not the sort of place you would eat if you have young children with you but for couples and adults it is well worth a visit.

The Brazen Head - Not Just Braised!

By karlsL3847HC |

The Brazen Head's non-descript speakeasy entranced doesn't hint to the great drinks and very good food inside. With no visible signage it's an easy place to miss, but once inside its raucous atmosphere there's no mistaking you are in for great SF libations and food. Table wait was about 45 minutes so we opted for two spots at the bar. Michael our bartender slid up soon as we sat down and asked for our drink orders Mojitos and martinis were the drinks to be had. They were served cold, clean and made fresh. The dinner menu is typical for American cuisine of steaks and roast, but there are daily specials and some restaurant favorites worth trying. I had the fresh oysters as a starter and braised lamb prepared in a savory reduction with fresh new vegetables and baked potato. The lamb was well prepared and portion size was very good. My wife had the prime ribThursday special. The dinner came with salad, baked potato and steamed veggies. The prime rib was tasty and well prepared. Perhaps not the best I've had but very good for the price point. We shared a bottle of the house red; believe it was a Sonoma Valley Petit Syrah. Not a bad first night's dinner in SF. Price point was about average for SF and that area. The nostalgia of old style SF is well preserved at the BH so worth a visit.

No Trip To San Francisco is complete without a visit to The Brazen Head

By Chris H |

I first came to the Brazen Head 9 years ago. Some locals took us there. Not only have I been back several times on my subsequent visits to San Francisco, but often go there more than once during a visit. Located in Cow Hollow, don't look for a sign 'cause there isn't one. The Restaurant is small and the bar consists of a handful of stools. Not sure if they take reservations but there isn't much room to wait if they are full. Often times we have chosen this place for late night dining. I have tried several items on the menu and ALL have been terrific. However, no visit to the Brazen Head or San Francisco is complete until I've had the NY Strip Pepper Steak. They also make a great martini. As mentioned previously, the dining room is intimate - which pretty much describes the whole place. It has a vibrant noise level but nothing over-powering. We've never experienced even the slightest hint of bad service. I would highly recommend this restaurant. My last visit in San Francisco consisted of a day and a half and, staying in Union Square, I made time to go by and have dinner. You should to.

Late Night Dinner

By SanMijas |

looking for a restaurant to go to after Beach Blanket Babylon we came back to the Brazen Head near our hotel on a recommendation. Enjoyed the atmosphere, service, and the food was good. My petite filet mignon was very petite but for a late night dinner was perfect. The scampi was also good.

Great late night open pub

Had a really great meal here. Nice steak and very friendly staff. The price was good, so the bang for the bucks is good here. Kitchen is open to 1am.

Great food, good drinks!

By RichardHogg |

If you didn't have the address you'd never find this place. All it has is its building no in the door. It only takes Debit Cards or Cash, but they do tell you this when they greet you. The beer & cocktails are good & the food is excellent! We shared oysters for starters, then I had the surf & turf, my missus had the Salmon & my daughter a chicken burger. All very very nice. The service was excellent too. Only downside is that it's too dark. We had to use the torch on our phones to see the menus. There's ambiance & then there's just plain dark, this was slipping heavily to the latter. Still I'd highly recommend it 😃

Eric and Mike: as cohesive as a Swiss watch

By TopLeaf |

We were staying just down the road, and we were told, 'perfect bar to have an affair in' since it's a neighbourhood bar and they don't advertise out the front! So we went in and had a couple of drinks and were simply impressed by this well done bar. Think hardwood interior, good commingling of diners and bar patrons areas, not loud, but not quiet and a couple of TV's in ace you were interested in the game. Overall we liked the feel of his place and will probably have 'one more' before we head out of SF.

Intimate , Good food & atmosphere

By Ned Maguire |

This small local restaurant one block from Lombard St. is intimate and private. The menu is somewhat limited but the food is very good and the Martinis are excellent. Service was friendly and attentive. Prices very reasonable for an "In Town" restaurant. Just bring cash or a check; they don't accept credit cards.

Rude & Prejudiced service by the host

By Mobile55240956693 |

Four of us visited this restaurant for dinner on a Monday evening, and unfortunately, our experience was far from satisfactory. We waited over 45 minutes for a table despite the restaurant not being particularly busy. There was an available table for six, but the host chose not to seat us there. When I inquired about the rationale, I was told they don’t accept reservations and seat guests on a first-come, first-served basis. However, it didn’t make sense to hold a larger table for a potential party of five while seating two guests at a table meant for four. The host's behavior and lack of empathy, combined with their body language, felt almost prejudiced against us, as non-white patrons. This incident occurred at 8:45 PM on a Monday night. Regardless of the quality of the food, the value of a dining experience heavily depends on how patrons are treated, and unfortunately, this treatment will eventually affect the restaurant's reputation. This place had always been a family favorite whenever we were in the city, so this experience was especially disappointing. Moving forward, I would prefer to support other restaurants in the neighborhood that are more caring and attentive to their patrons.

Great Food Great Prices

By Linda L |

Although there is usually a wait for most of us who come here as tourists during Fleet Week, it is well worth it. For diners, the atmosphere is intimate and cozy. For the bar, there is a friendly crowd of neighborhood locals. Inside are small dimly lit lamps on rustic tables where you are handed a pleasing menu and wine list with reasonable prices. It's quite comfortable here and hours of conversation, good food and wine, can make you stay longer than you planned. The food is quite good and there are many delicious choices from appetizers to entrees. I'm sure you'll be keeping this restaurant on your frequent dining list.

A fairly hidden little taste of America

By James G |

Stumbled across this place using TripAdvisor Offline (a godsend). A magic little bar, moody lighting, polished wood, and a barman straight out of the 1950s, coming out with cliche bar talk, towel swung across his shoulder. We only had dessert which was a tad too small for the price paid, but it was nice. The mains looked great, and very affordable however. As a pair of American obsessed Europeans, the place felt very legit, which my partner and I thoroughly enjoyed.

Cute and cozy little place

By Nikki A |

We got in late to our motel next door and were pleasantly surprised when we got there. The food was really delicious. The atmosphere was casual and we felt like we were in someone’s home eating. Would recommend, we went twice during our 3 days stay!

Excellent prices, nice dinner selection, quiet out of the way, neighborhood treasure

Cool location, not really busy, seems like a "real" San Francisco location, not full of tourists. Does not have a sign on the outside, you have to know where you're going. Don't take credit cards, so bring your ATM card or cash. Good wine list. We've been going there for years when in the Cow Hollow area.

Small, cozy bar/restaurant, with great food, good service and reasonably priced. Rarely have to wait more than 10-15mins for a table. Only takes cash or ATM, no credit cards.

THE BEST OF THE BEST!!!!

By betsybubbles |

It is a tiny place and I mean tiny. A bar more than anything and I don't drink. There was nothing tiny about tasty food, it was enormously delicious!!!!!!! We all loved it!!! The Pepper steak is the signature dish and it was great!!!!! The prime rib , excellent!!!!! The Beef Bourgingnon, (?) phenominal! The meat ball appetizer the best, as were all the sauces ! We loved everything we ordered! We can't wait to go back!

Average restaurant, quirky decor.

By SamiKnight |

We ate here late one night on a recommendation, we walked in without a booking. The restaurant is very dimly lit, but was full of people and looked nice enough. Our server was very friendly, and brought us the wine we ordered promptly, it was a fantastic bottle, the Jade Mountain Merlot. i highly recommend! Unfortunately that was the best part. We both ordered the shrimp scampi which was disappointing. The shrimp was a good size but tough and tasteless, the sauce also tasteless and the rice under seasoned. I'm not sure i'd eat her again, unless caught in a pinch late at night (they serve until very late). It was a little to dark, and a little too expensive for what we got.

Hidden Oasis!

By Teresa S |

Located one block from Lombard on Buchanon it doesn't even have any signage or Open/Closed in window! Nothing but a welcoming glow from the windows. The decor is Irish Pub-style filled with locals and friendly, efficient staff. The food was very tasty and beautifully presented. We ordered the arugula appetizer salad with pecans, apple slices, mandarin orange slices and goat cheese crumbles to share. The salmon had a creamy sauce with capers. I ordered the petite filet which was much much smaller than any I've ever received. It was seasoned perfectly and truly melted in my mouth but left me wishing for more. More than a little pricey. Make sure to bring cash or debit cards. CREDIT CARDS ARE NOT ACCEPTED.

Surf and Turf, Baby!

By cxjsparks |

I have been to Brazen Head irregularly over the past several years, usually to join friends for a drink or two, usually before going to other locations in the Marina (specifically La Barca, but they are closing soon, so who knows after that?). I have been there once before to eat and enjoyed it, so decided to go again. This time around I went with my friend Tania. We started with the dungeness crab cakes. I must say that I LOVE crab cakes, and these did not disappoint, down to the slightly spicy sauce they included. Of course I wish they were larger for the price, but really, they were incredibly delicious. (And really, the size is fine. I mean, it is an appetizer, right?) We also shared a caesar salad. I wanted to try the baby spinach salad, but Tania wasn't interested, so we went with a classic. If you like caesar salad, you'll enjoy this one. Nothing particularly special, but good. For our entrees, Tania selected the grilled Pacific salmon filet from the regular menu while I chose the surf and turf from the specials menu. I've never had surf and turf before, and I really wanted to try the lobster. Tania very much enjoyed her salmon. She said it was cooked well, and the seasoning was just right. I absolutely loved the surf and turf! Definitely a meal I will try again, even if it's at a different location. Again, of course, I wish there was more to the meal, the lobster tails (2) were on the small side as was the petit filet, but every bite was delicious! Truth is, it was enough food, especially when you've already had appetizers/salad/soup, and know there are veggies on the plate as well. And it's a good thing there *wasn't* more of it, because I would've left over-stuffed. As it was, I was able to enjoy every bite and not feel too full afteward. We in America tend to think the bigger the better. More and more I appreciate when restaurants make our portions smaller and smaller. Yes, of course, we can always take some home, but really, is it ever as good the next day? Not usually. (Doesn't mean I don't still do it, but I don't go out so often that I can't splurge a little each time and fully enjoy the meal that night without worrying about taking leftovers home.) For dessert I ordered a molten chocolate dish. I didn't know exactly what to expect - it was recommended by my friend, but it wasn't what she had thought it would be. It was delicious, so I really didn't mind that it wasn't what she expected. Even though she's not allowed to have dessert right now (religious fast), she had a taste and said that she also very much enjoyed it. I tried to coax her into having more, but she said no, she was being good. I didn't push it. The service was good. Not absolutely terrific, but good. I was using a coupon, and as I presented it early, I think there was a tendency to not be as attentive to our table. The waitress wasn't especially friendly, despite the fact that I kept saying thank you and smiling. The reply was more "mmmm hmmm" and no smile than anything. As a side note, the bartenders (when we friends sit at the bar on non-eating nights) are quite fabulous! Michael and Mia are great behind the bar, very accommodating, and fun to talk with. If you find yourself in the Marina, definitely one of the places to check out. They serve dinner until, I believe, 1:00 a.m. (Call to confirm, but I think that's accurate.) At any rate, a late-night kitchen. Oh, and it's a very low-key place from the outside. It's one of those places that if you don't know it's there, you won't know it's there. No advertising, no bright lights, very old school, and very nice. It can also be very romantic - dark lighting throughout. Bon Appetit!

Very nice place to have a meal

By Des T |

We had two meals in this restaurant and enjoyed them both. The staff are very helpful and the food was excellent with a good selection of drinks. We eat at night so the atmosphere was very dark, romantic and inviting!! All in all an excellent out of the way place to have a meal if you are staying near Lombard Street.

A Surprise Place

By Quasarsoujourner01 |

My brother and I decided to meet for prime ribs and we selected this place. Brazen Head doesn't take reservation and when we drove over to the neighborhood in Marina, San Francisco, there was no outside sign or advertising board for this reataurant. The place was packed when we walked in. There was a bar next the dining area. Lighting was dim and the area was small. It would sit about twenty persons, that's why it doesn't take reservation. Customer service was not bad. Servers and host were very friendly and cordial. Orders were promptly taken and not too long, all our prime ribs came. They were about 12-16 oz cuts. We wanted them medium rare. The bill came and it was what we expected. Not bad for a hidden gem in the Marina neighborhood for prime ribs!

What a gem!

Lovely restaurant, only visiting SF for 4 days but I am so glad we found this place. Simple menu but everything we ordered was delicious! Wouldn't hesitate to recommend.

Romantic Late Night Dinner in San Fransisco

By Ro22sS |

When all the other night spots have closed their kitchens and you're lucky to get pretzels at the bar, this off beat little corner restaurant will welcome you in and offer up amazing eats after 11pm. Great mood lighting, atmosphere and ambiance was perfect. Perfect for a date night or top secret meeting. We had the prime rib sliders, meatballs, spinach cranberry walnut salad with complimentary sourdough bread. All so good! Server was polite and very professional. I will make it a point to return to this spot again!

Not bad

By Jackie L |

Saw this reccommended on TA and as it was just around the corner from our hotel thought we'd give it a go! The food was very nice but also expensive for what you got. The room was very small and the tables crammed in. It was too dark to read the menus and it was very loud and noisey - far from being romantic as described in other reviews! The staff were friendly. They take cash only!

Awesome food!

By j09839 |

Love the atmosphere and the food; however, they will not split checks. My coworker and I have visited this establishment often but tonight we were told they would not split our checks per policy. We are on business travel and are on per diem, therefore our checks need to be separate in order to be paid by our company. We were refused. Move into the 21st century!!!

Great Local Spot

By 860Vetman |

When traveling we like to visit places where the locals go. Staying at the Coventry Motor Inn the desk clerk suggested Brazen Head. What a nice place it was, a homey feeling while being many miles from home.

Terrific

By Sharon W |

What a find, thankfully I had done some research and since we stayed on the next corner it seemed like an easy place for our first night. The Brazen Head has atmosphere that is perfect for adults the service excellent and the chef creates wonderful meals using fresh produce that he enhances to give us the best dinner we have had so far on our holiday. Heirloom tomato and Burrata salad,Mushroom Vol'au'vent,Steak and Halibut all exceptional.

More like Raisin Head

By Luke Wahl |

Extremely expensive, not filling amount of food, lack of sides included with any large entree, unnatural combination of high prices, small portions, and slow service. We got rather cold waiting outside for our check too. It was a complete fail even with a very warm welcome and friendly staff happy to seat us outdoors with the inside full. Oddly they couldn't tell us how long the wait would be, hey we are from the Midwest. We often hear of long waits and at least knowing it's popular is something! Surprisingly the high reviews across Yelp and Google Maps didn't line up for us here: the small menu serving even smaller portions of below average meats couldn't amend our expectations for this city's legendary eats. Coming from the Midwest where big steak and bigger people are everywhere, us five guys were surprised to notice the only sized part of this quaint corner restaurant was, well of course, the dollar signed digits. That wasn't a concern at first but quickly became the main one; we couldn't figure how chef managed to forget additional sauces, gravies, a little complimentary bread to fill in the extra space, or anything like potatoes. We were extremely hungry after a long day of seeing the Bay Area so you'd think even average food would taste fantastic. I personally couldn't fault my meatballs appetizer for flavors. Easy to eat and rich combination of three animals but the twenty dollars and no toppings it added to after tax and tip seemed unfair for three small scrumptious spheres. The burger looked a winner too since it disappeared quickly across the table from me. However the others who did the special of the day, Guinness lamb shank, and two getting the main prime rib mentioned a subpar experience. Lack of flavors, thickness, little to compete with even the basics we are used to. The infamous Texas Roadhouse came to mind as a minimum in expectations for steak: they cover a table with a properly sized prime rib and an assembly of sides for half the price of Brazen Head. Sure the atmosphere, overall quality, and refined setup isn't the same level but I've had three prime ribs from Texas Roadhouse. I have to admit they're plenty fine for the price point. I'll be so bold to say Brazen Head has got to be better than the most cheap of national beef house chains. When 240$ across five guys gets dropped for dinner, the steaks (ha!) are way higher. Sadly we figured out too late that the desserts seem to be the thing here! Might have to try again and go for the last menu which offered near as many options as the first one!

We walked right past it...glad we didn't miss it!!

Love this little bar/restaurant. Was one block from our hotel and easy to miss...so happy we saw it. Fun place, great food, friendly people!

Spot on

By Ian M |

We called in for drinks and food and chose to sit by the bar. There is a very full range of drinks and the food we had was really tasty, well cooked and presented. The barman Dan was friendly and helpful. The whole place had a nice atmosphere and I'd heartily recommend it.

Nice food in a quiet not touristy area of San Fran

By NickLacasse |

Nice little gastropub in Liberty Village in San Francisco away from the touristy places of the downtown area. Dark room but your eyes get used to it after a few minutes and it makes for a very intimate setting for a nice dinner! We kept it simple with 2 orders of Filet Mignon cooked exactly as requested with a nice Bearnaise sauce to go with it, along with a nice bottle of red. Always a good sign and you notice a lot of locals enjoying their meals! We loved the place, we loved the food and would love to go again when our travels bring us back to San Francisco!

ditto to what everybody else is saying... a little known gem.

By syd barrett |

I meant to review earlier and forgot. My girlfriend and I visited SF back in Sept 2016. We stayed at the Coventry Inn on Lombard, so just 1 block and short walk away. I forget who recommended Brazen Head... either a local, or the Coventry Inn manager. Because otherwise we would've missed it. Not the typical SF touristy place at all. Just the opposite, which was exactly what we were looking for... It was totally laid back and cool. I think it was a Tuesday night, so not very crowded, but a steady stream of "regulars". We sat at the bar and it was a perfect blend of eclectic locals... and I mean that in a good way. Old, young, racially diverse, etc... not overly friendly and annoying, but open to meeting new people and engaging in lively conversation. We absolutely loved it and had a great time. And as others have said, we appreciated the "old school" feel of the place. Took the advice of the bar folks and had the New York Strip pepper steak, which was cooked perfectly at medium rare. I'd have to look at the menu to remember the appetizers, I just remember they were excellent as well. Our biggest regret was that we were only able to go once, as the next day we were taking off Monterey & Big Sur.

Intimate pub with a great atmosphere

By Duzzy |

We dined here a couple of nights and enjoyed both experiences. Staff very friendly, atmosphere was great and food was very nice. Maybe not a place for young children but if you are looking for a quite intimate place to dine this is it...we also enjoyed the afternoon drinks and mingling amongst the locals, plus it's full service till 1am, bonus when doing night tours to Alcatraz

A HIDDEN GEM

By AEBBrenham |

Not easy to locate this wonderful restaurant on a quiet corner with no obvious sign visible, yet well with the effort. Wonderful comfort food. Try the Grilled Garlic Bulb, Crab Cakes, Grilled Salmon, and Double-cut Pork Chops. All are flavorful and nicely prepared. Unassuming and friendly sevice. Nice Bar.

Great Place, Slow to Order

By NorCalGoyo |

OK, I love this place, I've been coming here since the '80s. I first ate here when I was a law student with a boss after work who thought the restaurant's name had some naughty associations, and then for first dates, and then any time I wanted a decent meal at an hour when most restaurants were closing up. I once brought my 12-year-old son here when he was in the San Francisco Boys Chorus and sang with the SF Opera, and got out late. Can't argue with the food, or the booze, or the overall vibe or the like. In fact, I always feel a bit of buzz returning because of the good times I've had here in the past and its feeling of grown-up sophistication. BUT: crikey, it can be hard to get a waiter's attention to put in an order, even for drinks. Granted, most times when I go to the Brazen Head it's late, and I admit I may be a little cranky and on edge from being famished or in need of liquid refreshment. The last two times I've gone, though, I've felt like I'm going to have to stand on the dining table and wave my arms to get the waiter's attention. Last week when my wife and I went, the place was maybe one-third full, and waiters had time to chat with patrons they were serving, but it was 10 minutes before anyone came over to say hello, offer to take a drink order, etc. That's a bit of a buzzkill. A very nice hostess had seated us (and warned us repeatedly not to trip over the riser into the dining room) and then disappeared, and we felt stranded. And of course when the waiter did appear at our table to take our order, he was friendly and efficient, the food and drinks rolled out, and our little world was once again in good order.

Your Must Stop in SF/Marina

Great place, do stop in and see them, serve late, food outstanding and the barmen are possibly the best in SF.

Melting Fillet Steak

By Nigel S |

This little gem of a restaurant was so good we went back the next evening! If you get the chance to go I heartily recommend the fillet steak, I can honestly say that I have never ever had a more delicious piece of beef in my life! Staff were great, prices fair and ambiance good although we felt it was a little on the dull side(a few more lights may help)!

Small intimate restaurant/bar. Eddie the bartender is knowledgable and friendly with great recommendations. The fillet Mignon was perfect and the French Onion Soup rivals though I've had in top restaurants in Paris. A must visit!!!

Great neighborhood bar/grill--but no credit cards

By DulceVida-TX |

I dined here with a client in March 2013 Brazen Head is a great neighborhood bar, with a really intimate feel, like you've stepped back to a time where everyone stops off for a drink between their bus stop and home. It's got a great throwback feel to the Mad Man time of cocktails. It's also just like that in another regard....no plastic. They take cash or a debit card. Amex? Not so much. So for that reason, I can't rate them better than average. In today's age, taking a credit card isn't hard, my yard guy takes plastic--so the lack of this most basic of amenities surprised me. That said, the service was fantastic, the barman was great, cocktails were perfect. They had 8 different rye whiskey options, that's amazing. Veal was fantastic. Wine list was really limited. It was made up of good options, and priced reasonably, but was short. And the wine I did order, came out as a different vintage, they were out of the 2007, and subbed the 2008. Same price though.... Would I go back, absolutely. Will I complain when I go back that they don't take plastic, YES!

amazing food

By Debra O |

This is a small local restaurant that is known to locals and people who have been there. We found it by chance. The food is amazing and the service is top notch. We were a party of 6 and seated promptly and serviced right away. All were extremely pleased with their food choices. Happy, happy customers!!

Good food and drink, good prices

By Mr_Camblor |

Went here for one drink which turned into a few drinks and dinner as well. Wife and I shared a double cut pork chop which was perfectly cooked and a great price too. Staff are very friendly without being overly familiar and the guy behind the bar was incredibly personable. Was speaking to another guy at the bar from out of town who always comes here when he's around and I can see why. Nineteen thumbs up, would definitely while away an evening here again.

Old World charm and you leave feeling like family

By Marla B |

My 1st visit was so exceptional, I have been back 1 more time since. My friend introduced me, otherwise I don't think I would know anything about it. It's so unassuming and has no sign outside. My guess, it's a neighborhood gem and what a gem, it is. I love the feeling of an old speak easy inside. Kind of dark, dark wood, curtains on the windows, low lighting @ the tables, quiet ambiance, very intimate, which makes one want to speak in a quiet voice. It's a very "meaty" menu, which isn't usually my go to place. But I had to try the meatball appetizer and oh my, they are delicious and the sauce, it has to be scooped up by the extra bread. 2x now I have had the burger, as it's so dang good and huge. Each time I have taken half home as it's so filling and always cooked perfectly. Great wine list both by the glass and by the bottle. Service is exceptional and so friendly but not intrusive. The servers make one feel very welcome. Good coffee and my friend and I both love the fact it comes in it's own little silver pot. Feels so elegant. I can't say enough good things about this restaurant and I will be back when I'm craving an "off the hook burger" with a starter of meatballs.

Well i loved it!

By Jade M |

This is such a cool little place. Awesome intimate atmosphere, dark and cosy especially on a cold night. Had a few drinks at the bar while waiting for a table. Loved all the candles and soft lighting. Had the ny steak which was delicious, and tasted my friends chicken marsala that she was raving about. It was soooo good. Probably the best marsala ive tasted. service was great, I would definately take people here on a visit to san francisco.

Great spot

We were staying at the Coventry inn on Lombard street, this place is only a few feet away. What a little gem, very small but great atmosphere. Very good menu and food, excellent staff. Low level jazz music in the back ground what more could you ask for. Large wine, beer and drinks selection. Highly reminded if you are in the area

Excellent food, excellent service, extremely expensive. Have the house special pepper steak.

Hard to find spot

By Nancy W |

We were looking for a place to eat late and had been to Liverpool Lil's in the distant past, saw that they were closed and this was listed as a "sister" restaurant. We drove by but saw no signs so were a little apprehensive. We went in to find a great spot for a late dinner and drinks with famiiy we were visiting while in SF for a family wedding. The food was amazing and surprisingly reasonable. We were quite happy and have already recommended to other family members who will be in the city on business soon.

Very intimate small pub. Very good steak. Liked the quiet atmosphere and the friendly staff. Worth a visit

Can't Wait to go Back!!

By Anjanette M |

Little known - getting more well known by the day! Nothing to dislike! They don't take credit cards, but recently started taking debit cards I heard. They don't advertise, but you can find them on Google Maps or YELP. BRING CASH$$$ NO RESERVATIONS! Didn't bother me, I loved the Appletini at the bar while we waited!!

One rude bartender

By Julie M |

I've never been treated so rudely by a bartender, and I'm 50! Older guy with a beard I think. Unfortunately, have loved this place for 20 years but won't be back. Am a Bay Area native and have lived in SF for 20 years. Am a nice, normal person. Girls' night on Sat. night before Saint Patty's. One friend ordered drink, me as DD ordered club soda, tired friend ordered tea, got heck for it, so order club soda, too. We were "accused" of being from San Ramon and basically for being lame for not ordering drinks - several times. Wrong on many levels. Wow.

Tiny, intimate neighborhood gem that won't dent your wallet

By Alan A |

Enter the door of the Brazen Head at the corner of Buchanan and Greenwich streets (there is no outside signage) to be greeted by a friendly, accommodating staff, and ready yourself for a memorable dinner at a reasonable price. Dimly lit with dark wood paneling, the atmosphere feels almost Disneyesque, except for the fact Brazen Head is real, not imaginary. Some have said the escargot is likely the best they've experienced anywhere in the world, with apologies to Andrew Simmern and Anthony Bourdain. Simply baked in garlic butter and parsley, Brazen Head foregoes the pesky, useless bread crumb topping used by so many, to leave you with an exquisite pool of bread dipping nectar after consuming the snails. Beef is the star here, offering roasted, boneless 10-ounce rib eye with sides ($33 as of this writing), a 10-ounce filet mignon ($35), and a 12-ounce New York pepper steak (($30). Street parking is tight, and public parking garages are a few blocks away. Pull into the retro Motel Capri across the street from Brazen Head and ask for parking. The most recently parking fee of $10 seems well worth the convenience.

nothing really memorable!

By tony d |

We went there for the first time after 20 some years, the place still pretty much look same, dark and somewhat cramped. The greeting was pleasant, the server was so mechanical, the bus boys were pleasant and efficient. The food was really nothing special for the price. Rather a disappointment for the visit.

Great Food But...

By JUDITH S |

This would have been a 4 or 5 star rating except for one problem: we were seated outside and the party next to us had their dog with them. Our server and the person who delivered our meals both petted the dog repeatedly and one of them shook hands with the dog. I don't mind the dog's presence, but I do mind my food being served by someone who has been petting a dog. My experience working in food service, tells me hands were not washed after the doggy interaction.

Pleasant Neighborhood Bar and Restaurant

By James L |

Brazen Head is within walking distance of my hotel. I’m from the East Bay here in SF working for a couple weeks. After looking at reviews on a few restaurants close to the hotel; I choose Brazen Head. Good choice, I enjoyed the experience at the bar. The bartender is a pleasant guy with interesting conversation. No draft beer; however, good choice of bottled beer and ale. I had the Chicken Marcella for dinner. It was very good. Different than I’m used to. The Chicken Marcella was in a white sweet sauce. I’m used to a red savory sauce. I’ll be back again this week or next to try another dish. On a side note, it probably would not be appropriate for me to say the hostess and the owner (?) are stunning. So I won’t.

Hidden gem for the locals

By Bikedibley |

Directly opposite our hotel (Capri Motel) was the Brazen Head. No signage or indication at all that it was a restaurant. Not even an open sign. We only realised it was a restaurant upon recommendation from a local bar up on Union street. It has yellow awnings with mostly closed Venetian blinds on the corner of Buchanan and Greenwich. We found the door and sheepishly walked in at around 6pm. It was mostly empty but we were met with a big smile on the waitresses face. She welcomed us and served us promptly but without rushing. It wasn't long on this Tuesday night that the restaurant filled up to capacity and we could tell it was a popular spot. We had surf & turf at around $34 per head for our main which was average for a good quality S&T, so not particularly expensive but not cheap either. It was a simple meal with Fillet Mignon and two small lobster tails, finished with green beans and sweet potato. The meat was stunning and having ordered it rare, was cooked perfectly. We have no reservations what so ever with the quality, value or service. Love how hidden away they are, yet clearly popular.

WHAT HAPPENED TO THE SERVICE & FOOD?

By betsybubbles |

3 Of us dined at Brazen Head, Wed. night, 3/7/12. We had the worst waitress. She brought me the smallest piece of Prime Rib I was ever served anywhere and it was cold!!! I asked for no garlic on my veggies and would like the carrots and squash, with baked potato. The potato was warm, the squash was missing and the carrots were tasteless, raw and like eating it right out of the fridge. The waitress didn't return for me to send dinner back until my friends were finished theirs. I was given the delicious pepper steak next, excellent, cooked perfectly and superb. The rice was inedible, the carrot returned partially rotten, uncooked, tasteless and still without the squash. The waitress told me my list was so long and she didn't have a paper or pen to write it down. ???? Isn't that HER JOB????? Is it really too hard to remember no garlic, medium rare , carrots & squash without brocolli? The prices were way up from the last visit, also! Took away the specials too! The garlic mashed potatos were overpowered by the garlic and inedible I was told by my friends. The hamburger one had was nothing special. The meatball appetizers and the prime rib sliders , 2 of them, were also good, I was told. By the time my entree was served, I had eaten all the bread from hunger and my friends had a long wait for me to finish. I am soooooooo disappointed and will most likely not return. Higher prices , poor service and cold raw food is unappealing. Also it is too dark , why??? Those tiny dirty lamps on the tables with the BLACK shades all scotch taped together have to go!

Atmosphere and Food!!

By Hope Webb |

Wow! The best meal I’ve had in quite some time. Amazing staff, the atmosphere makes the dining experience something special, the food.... everything comes together to make one perfect dinner experience. The veal piccata was to die for, prime rib excellent as was to be expected and the lobster bisque was Devine! 100% recommend going out of your way to find this hidden gem!

The Best Little Pub in San Francisco

By Mithril013 |

This little corner pub resembling a typical English corner pub was recommended to us by a gentleman in the bar of our hotel. With no previous knowledge of the Brazen Head we decided to celebrate our Silver Wedding here purely on that recommendation and that of the hotel Concierge. To say that we were not disappointed is an understatement. The food was excellently prepared and served by a very efficient waitress (Brianne) and the 'Matre De' Eddie and Barman Jimmy added their own brand of banter and wit. It wouldn't be right for me not to mention that my wife is not really a steak person but she ordered the Angus Steak and she thought it was the tastiest, tenderest, melt in your mouth experience she had in a long while, well who am I to argue. If she's happy I'm happy!! My meal was equally tasty and tender but I couldn't get a word in! Following our meal we managed to grab a couple of stools at the bar, not always an easy thing to do as they seem to be commandeered by the 'locals' (and why not, it's their pub after all). We were soon embroiled with the regulars and had a fabulous evening. That was my wife hooked, and she insisted on a further two visits with me enjoying the fact that it was her decision to return!! Our further visits were as equally enjoyable as the first and we were sad to leave. If ever we return to San Francisco I know which Bar my beeline will lead me to.

Hidden gem!

What a great find! This place is small but really is a great dinner spot. Their prices are so cheap!! Bottles of wine were so affordable and dishes were priced well!! The escargot was delicious. We also tried the scallops and the ahi tuna tartare. Amazing!!

Local Gem!!

By JoseSF |

I heard about this place from some friends of mine and that it was good and a local favorite. I got invited to dinner one day and oh boy it was good. I love their drinks as they're not too strong. The appetizers were awesome and the food was excellent. The waitress (sorry i forgot her name) gave us a phenomenal service! I work in customer service industry so i know when i see one. She was very attentive and took care of us. I like how the place is, quaint, easy and chill. It really is a local neighborhood favorite. I would definitely come back to this place for some appetizers and drinks with some friends as it has the casual feel to it yet an elegant taste and service.

Taste, no frying!

By Vincent 27 |

By chance, because in front of our motel, we tested this busy bar restaurant, which is a sign Atmosphere and staff at the top, but above all excellent dishes with taste and refined, for US. Not the usual grayon or pasta or pizza. So good, we went back on the second night I recommend to Europeans and French in particular For the hardcore, there are also some dishes with various fried bases

Good food

By Cheryl A |

This restaurant was close to our hotel so we decided to give it a try. The food was delicious but we weren’t impressed with the atmosphere. I had a filet and it was cooked perfectly. My husband had shrimp over spaghetti which he enjoyed as well. Service was good as well.

A little gem in the back streets of San Fransisco

This is a fantastic find. Think old fashioned British pub with the most fantastic food and service. Because there are no reservations you might have to wait a little while for a table but it is well worth it. The food is gorgeous. There is not a massive menu but I recommend the steak. The ambience is noisy and pub- like but the atmosphere is good.

The Chicken Marsala is amazing. Try the escargot with their delicious garlic bread.

Great value for money well worth it

Best Buffalo Burger you'll ever have.

Right at the West Portal Tunnel you will find this great spot. There is some parking but it's great if you are taking Muni. The burgers are beyond good, cooked how you like and they are big and juicy. Their other food and condiments are good too plus the neighborhood is awesome. Fair warning...it is pricey.

Local!

We stopped in here one night on our vacation to have a couple of drinks. What a GREAT place! The bar tender, servers, and host were all very friendly and personable. Listening to people at the bar you could tell this was a locals kind of place. They made a GREAT Manhattan! The food menu looked great...next time we will go for a meal. If you need transportation... DON'T TAKE A CAB! Download an app called 'Lyft'. We used this service everyday at least 2 times. No complaints! Great way to travel, cheaper than a cab and we never waited more than 5 minutes for a pick up! Happy Traveling!

Old school menu - awesome drinks

By eastsacgirl |

This was our 4th time here. Love, love the atmosphere. All dark, romantic and kinda old time gangsta feel. Sat at the bar this time and orders apps. Escargot, carpaccio and onion soup. Snails/raw beef was pretty darn good but soup wasn't up to par. Had very little flavor and crouton was a soggy mess. Bartender/owner was just a delight. Made the best martini I've had in a LONG time. Finished up the night with some port and good conversation. Have had their dinners before and they're not too bad plus they serve until 1am which is totally cool. Better know where it is because there's no signage outside and they only take cash or debit card.

Quaint dinner

The food was very good, known for their steaks, the service was quick. We were staying at the Coventry Motor Inn and they recommended this restaurant which was right around the corner, one block from the Coventry Motor Inn. It had no name on the outside but was told that the food was good and they were right. The tables are set up with little lamps, very romantic. Not a big place but nice. I had the prime rib sliders and they were delicious. My cousin had the steak with baked potatoe.

I think the meal we had at this restaurant easily qualifies as our worst in 2017. I ordered a filet mignon with sauce béarnaise and my wife a soupe à l’oignon. My “sauce béarnaise” appeared as a white sauce with lemony scent. They must have washed the egg yolks, to get them white, replaced the white wine vinegar with lemon and forgot the tarragon. I complained and no apology was offered for serving a different sauce. The filet itself lacked any signs of a Maillard reaction, no browning, and although served medium-rare, it lacked in flavor that a higher cooking temperature would have imparted without overcooking it. My wife’s onion soup was not made with the required Gruyère cheese, but with some rubbery and tasteless succedaneum. Reader: do yourself a favor and walk two blocks over to Alegrias, for a good meal.

Disappointing experience -Foodies stay away

Not the place I expected? We liked the idea of an out of the mainstream pub atmoshphere but the cash only (or debit cards) policy is offputting. Diningrm atmosphere was cozy but at 9PM it was still very loud! I thought we were going to an Irish Pub and after a day of being tour guide to our out of town friends, a pint of Guiness was in order. I was actually shocked that the bar only has canned Guiness and none on tap. I thought there was an Irish slant to this place? Only other two beers on tap- an amber red and Heiffweisen (sp?). The menu was also a cultural confusion. While it did offer varied meat and fish selections it was definately an Italian influence?? The waitress was slow and not very helpful. She was one of those just the facts jack kind - and when we could have been offered alternatives or suggestions she gave us the robot like response. Like we asked- what is the Penne pasta like?- she repeated back exactly what the menu said. I got the house-specialty pepper steak and it was on the level of a steak from a midlevel chain restaurant. Mashed potatoes were not right? and cream spin boring. The Salmon dish was okay and the rice was blah. The ceasar side was pretty good but one of our party ordered the ceasar with chicken and it came out with no chicken. They sent it back while the rest of us let our food get cold waiting for a remedy. Manager asked us how everything was and when I told him he thanked us for letting him know. Great, but a comp drink for my out of town guest would have maybe smoothed over that awkward diner experience of being the one holding up the rest of the party from eating. I won't go again, nothing there to go back to in a city of much better choices.

Great food, Great place

If you can find something you like on the menu (which shouldn't be too hard), you will regret not visiting this lovely little restaurant.

The right atmosphere

By Mr DLPB |

Brazen Head gets the atmosphere right was dim lighting (you might need a torch to read the menu) intimate tables and shuttered windows. Steak was nicely cooked and the draft beer, unusually served with lemon, was delicious. All for $40 for one which was great.

Great local restaurant, amazing bar

By Wayne J |

Eric, the bartender, made the experience here even better. He was very knowledgeable and very friendly. It’s right in the middle of the community area and so I also talked with some of the locals. The menu Was very good, we all had steaks. Overall the meal was good. I most deafly would go back here. Sidenote, they do not take reservations.

Low lights, very intimate. Delicious food and amazing Moscow Mule. I couldn't have just one! Nice selection of wines. Great location, near Lombard Street.

Delightful

By Carole A |

Based on previous reviews and it being across from our motel, we decided to try it and we were very glad we did. We came early and were fortunate to be seated immediately because people just kept coming. And I can understand why. It’s a delightful place to eat. Fine dining it’s not and they don’t pretend to be. The restaurant is small and tables are close but the folks working there are great and the food is very good. My guest had the prime rib( they’re noted for this)and I had the petite filet. Dessert was very nice and it was nice to be able to have a glass of port to end my meal. Wine by the glass is typical with the usual choices. All in all I would highly recommend this restaurant . Not easy to find. Of course that’s why you have Waze.

Truly Symphonic

By metachimp |

This is literally a hidden pub. The largest (and only?) sign is inside the pub, behind the bar (and less than 2 sq. ft. in size). If trying to find it by night, the wooden doors are lit by yellowish lights. Enter with boldness. Once inside, the staff buzz around with symphonic coordination and practiced expertise that harkens to ages past. There is not a computer in the building, and they don't even take credit cards (debit or cash only). When you order food or drinks, your wishes are personally delivered, through word of mouth, to the hands that prepare it. The register behind the bar is literally an antique. The fact that they operate with such care, efficiency and excellence is truly a miracle... Or the result of years of practiced coordination. I very much enjoyed our visit. The cocktails and food were caringly made. The staff are there because they want to be there doing exactly what they are doing. Some of them have been there 30+ years! This type of place is simply not reproducible, and it does not "scale" well beyond its small size. It is a unique and beautiful gem, lovingly crafted in small quantities, that should be thoroughly appreciated for what it is. Don't miss out.

Old San Fran charmer

By Fox-Williams-TX |

We ate an early dinner here last night after a Sonoma wine tour. My husband and I split the 10oz filet with creamed spinach and potatoes. The steak was cooked perfectly, buttery and tender, creamed spinach was spectacular! The ambiance is old San Francisco with oak lined walls and dim lighting. Very minimal seating and no name on the front of the building. (Yellow building with green awnings.). Wonderful and quiet dinner spot!

The SF place to meet people Great Prices Opened Late

By ann w |

Here is the place to meet good quality people that have good jobs. Very good food. I have been going there ever since it opened. Excellent, cheaper than you can buy and make yourself. Everyone I know has met their husbands and wife there. If you are alone, you can go there and sit at the bar and make friends and meet people. I don't drink, but I know that it is the best bar in town. This is a long term owner that is at the restaurant 30 years or so.

Hidden Gem, Quirky but excellent

By Charlie_Jane00 |

This is a slightly eccentric bar/restaurant. As far as we could tell the name of the establishment features nowhere on the outside. The service was excellent - welcoming and cheerful. The barman is a character - warm but not "in your face". The whole place has a lot of character, and whilst fairly dark (even the barman used a torch at times) had the best ambience of our eating experiences so far this trip. To be picky the menu was not overly imaginative but the food was tasty, tender and nicely cooked I had a really nice wild mushroom soup, ribs (excellent) and cheesecake (ok but not remarkable). My wife had tacos (tasty), skirt steak (tender and served "rare" as ordered) and a baileys cappuccino. Total cost incl 4 draft beers, $103 before tips.

Very Disappointed in your Front Staff

By Terry S |

I love the Brazen Head Rest. I have been going to the Restaurant for Many Years. I had not been to the Rest. in a number of years. After a wonderful hike at the new bridge park 2 couples decided to try the restaurant for an early dinner. We arrived and had a cocktail at the bar. Great Bartender, Good Drinks and great people to chat with. We had a pleasant dinner. I left the restaurant and realized the next morning a forgot my beanie that my son had given to me for Christmas. I called the next day and the woman who answered the phone told me they had the beanie and she would hold it for my sister to pick up the next day. She also repeated to me it was a nice cashmere beanie. I was thinking they would hold the beanie for me .When my sister went to pick up the beanie they told her it was no longer there. She was told they leave lost and found in a bags open to the public and the staff on a Shelve. I called and was told the same thing. Maybe it should have been held behind the bar for safe keeping if someone called to pick up an item. Really poor policy. No one seemed to care. "Yeah this is what we do." So disappointed the hat met a lot to me. So please be careful with your belongings. Not great customer service from the front house. Thanks

Great restaurant, great atmosphere!

By Bob1949 |

We stumbled upon this atmospheric restaurant/bar at 10pm on a Saturday night after a recommendation by the hotel we were staying at that is just diagonally across the road. It is dimly lit, romantic, buzzing with atmosphere and serves food until 1am! Even on a Saturday night we were able to get a table and it was so good we returned on the Sunday. The first night we had the Chowder and a salad to start followed by Mussels on the Specials menu and the New York Strip Steak, one of their specialities. All excellent! The following night, on my wife's recommendation we again had the salad with tangerine, pecans, goat's cheese and spinach followed by the Fillet Steaks. All of the food was delicious and even late on a Sunday there was a good vibe, the service was attentive and friendly and the prices were very reasonable. The restaurant doesn't have any big advertising signs outside but simply 3166 Buchanan. Highly recommended.

# 2 in the Nation

By Arnold C |

Had an excellent dinner at the Brazen Head. This is a pub/restaurant with excellent service and no reservations. Parking is tough but the Prime Rib, Medium rare, was excellent and # 2 compared to Ray's Cafe in Kalihi, Honolulu. Beats out in order Broadway Prime, House of Prime Rib; San Mateo Prime, Ruth Chris, Mortons, and Outback.

Local bar all the way

By jeanne d |

We have been going to the Brazen Head for 20+ years. It was my local bar when I lived in San Francisco. We dined there last night and it was so great to see some familiar faces among the staff. They serve bistro type food; great apps, soups, salads, and entree's. It is a small intimate place to dine alone or with friends.

Local Steakhouse

By Jeff R |

This is a place most folks will never get the privilege of dining. It is a local restaurant in the Marina District of SF that you could walk past and not even notice. Not so much obscure as simply there, due to the lack of signage or other obvious identification. Almost like a private home or hideaway. You don't need to know the secret handshake or password to get in though, just show up. Reservations are not accepted, nor are credit cards. First come, first served and cash or debit cards are the preferred method of payment. But the experience is well worth it. The first thing you notice is the comfortable, homey, rich ambiance of an established restaurant. There is a fully stocked and nicely appointed bar, soft lighting, comfortable seating, excellent staff and delicious food selections perfectly prepared. A wonderful combination to enjoy.

Remember Monroe's, our City's favorite?

By William S |

Years ago, Monroe's Restaurant was San Francisco's favorite secret. Seating 40 people, this eatery was the home of well-oiled locals and important guests from around the world. Regulars like Herb Caen, Ed Moose, Scott Beach, Prescott Sullivan, Nate Thurmond, Rick Barry, would consistently visit this jewel. It was dark, romantic and the food prepared by chef Josef ' Garcia was 5 star. Brendan O'Donnell, the maitre' d, would welcome all the regulars who were escorting their "nieces" to dinner. One night, while I was at the intimate bar, I had a nice conversation with Allistair Cook. ..............................The Brazen Head is a throw-back to Monroe's. A small intimate bar, romantically dark, yet dimly lighted, 30 person capacity with many menu items that remind one of Monroe's. Our visit brought me back to the fun days of San Francisco. Escargot, ($12.00) 6 in place, amply buttered was a winner. The bread basket needs amending. Soft crust French doesn't make it! The classic Caesar, ($7.00) was fresh, crisp and cold. I had Prawns-Scampi. ( yes, you're correct. It's either Prawns or Scampi, not both). ($19.00), served with a meuniere' sauce, buttery and opaque-ly tender. The vegetables were par-boiled then finished at presentation. Pork Loin chop,($18.00), served with creamy yellow potato and a mango-mint glaze, tender, moist and very good. The New York Pepper Steak, 8 oz. ($20.00), medium rare was considered favorable by one of my guests. We washed the repast down with a Simi Cabernet, ($40.00). Our wine charge was surprisingly picked up by a guest at the bar. The guest was a regular at Monroe's for years and recognized us from the old days. Patricia, an attractive waitress was fantastic. She was happy to spend time with us, amused by our sense of humor. The Brazen Head, San Francisco, Marina District. ....Visitors and locals will not go wrong here. No reservations and they accept cash only, but the wait staff will advise you prior to service. 3166 Buchanan Street, near Union Street. Street Parking is at a premium.

Great local favorite

By Patty D |

If you're looking for a place that the locals go to, this is it. There's no sign on the door but it's worth finding. Cozy atmosphere with good food (meat heavy) & service. If you just want a cocktail the bar is great too. (if there's room). I wouldn't recommend it for vegetarians or kids, although all are welcome, but we meat eating adults love it. Bring cash or debit cards- No credit cards! Enjoy!
