Delicious food and friendly service

By TokyoVisitor |

A longstanding neighborhood gem. The food is fresh, well prepared and always tasty. The cafe has good hard cider on draft.

Tasty food and great service

By o2see |

Delicious sandwich made with salmon, marinated onions, tomatoes and lettuce served on a fresh bun. Came with a side of wasabi aioli.

Great cocktails and happy hour menu! Brunch too!

By Claire W |

This place has a lovely atmosphere and even lovelier cocktails! ;) Their waffles are amazing for brunch!

Probably the Best Breakfast Restaurant in Portland

By DMUH |

Outstanding breakfast menu. Great atmosphere. Staff and other guests are really friendly. The restaurant setting "encourages" interaction with other diners. Coffee is really good. In case you're wondering, the founders of the restaurants were chef and writers. Thus, the "ink" in the title. Got this info from the staff; so willing to share.

Good Breakfast

By Pattie S |

Bread & Ink is a good place to eat for breakfast. Quite a variety on the menu. My husband and I split the fried chicken, eggs & potato plate (with a side of sausage gravy). We also got a cinnamon roll. It was good, not the very best I've ever had, but quite tasty & plenty for two. Service was fast & good. I'd certainly recommend it for breakfast.

Cute waiter AND good eating!

By linda m |

The cutest waiter ever made the most delicious non-alcoholic drink off the "special menu!" You can't go wrong with their black bean burger. A lot of food and reasonably priced!

I tried since I live in...

By Kim F |

I tried since I live in the 'hood, but the servers were rude and my fish was charred.

Best Lox and Bagels

By Bill B |

Saturday mornings it is difficult to get a table, but definitely worth the wait for the lox and bagels. Service is good or bad, depending upon the server. It gets crazy on the weekends and service slips.

Delicious breakfast

By patamymom |

We loved our breakfast- everything was delicious and we had a terrific waitress. Good location being on Hawthorne- little Powell’s is down the street. Would recommend it- they have a varied menu so there is something for everyone!

Never been for breakfast ... until today!

By Bryan H |

While my friend was excited to find an "eggless" breakfast skillet, (and seemed to enjoy it), I chose the two scrambled eggs, with potatoes and "scone of the day". The potatoes were undercooked. (Yuck!) and the eggs were nothing to write home about. The scone was actually very tasty ... sliced, toasted (as they prepared it) with a bit of butter and jam. Our server was attentive and good at his job. I was allowed to pick a two top in the corner, which allowed me to talk with my friend away from other noisy customers. Sound is absorbed nicely here, and there's enough room that you don't feel squeezed in next to people on all sides. For the price, in the end, I would expect slightly better food. It isn't cheap here ...

Delicious!

By knitsmcgee |

We came for Waffle Window next door but ended up sitting on the Bread and Ink side of the room. The buttermilk fried chicken was fantastic, and the service was friendly and laid-back.

Wonderful Breakfast

By egs |

Another great spot in a city chock full of delicious places to eat, which is why I love to visit! We enjoyed their pancakes, chicken and waffles and eggs will grilled polenta. My daughter who loves a good chicken and waffles was delighted by the boneless perfectly cooked piece of fried chicken and loved the little skillet offered with a creamy sauce with a lemony parmesan flavor. My perfectly cooked eggs (over easy) were served with rectangles of grilled polenta flecked with herbs and red peppers and I really enjoy a side of warm Chipotle salsa. Go and enjoy!

good place for dinner

By robert E |

I like this place on Hawthorne. it's been around a long time and may not be as trending as other places but the dinner we had was very good. Simple, large portions and done well. Price point was great especially for how much food was severed.

It shouldn't say espresso on the window

By MonikaOregon |

On a cold afternoon, we stopped in for hot drinks. The hot chocolate was not hot. The mocha was essentially cocoa powder stirred into lukewarm coffee. The cappuccino was two shots topped by milk foam, served in an Irish coffee mug--the worst coffee our guest had had in Oregon.

Another Eastside Eatery!

By Grandmago |

Near the cup and saucer who caters to the same type of customers. Decent coffee and sandwiches along with some other menu items!

This cafe (almost) has it goin’ on

By 2peaz |

While in Portland recently we stumbled upon Bread and Ink for dinner. The space has an eclectic feel to it - part diner, part waffle bar, part coffee shop - but that made it all the more interesting. On a Saturday night we were seated quickly and served promptly. We enjoyed some local beer, wine, appys, mains and a yummy chocolate dessert. Although none of the food or presentation was outstanding, it did the trick nicely. We felt the risotto was overpowered by rosemary but the humous and veggie plate and everything else quickly disappeared. Overall, slightly better than average.

Don't miss this place.

By Belinda C |

Had breakfast here. It was amazing. Made to order with almost any substitution you want. Hash browns were perfect, crispy and moist. Line was long but worth the wait. Service was great.

Best fried chicken

By Richard B |

We had a great breakfast of chicken and waffles. The fried chicken was as good as any I have had anywhere. Crispy and moist and seasoned perfectly. The waffles were very good, but very sweet, a bit too much. Good smoothe coffee and the service was fine. Very crowded place so prepare to wait a bit, but worth it.

Good food horrible service

By TBotzon |

I do not like leaving negative reviews but our whole table of 5 was astonished by the terrible service we had for lunch. There was a sign they were looking for wait staff so may be that was part of the problem. We sat down and had our order taken and waited probably over an hour as other people were served after we came in. The waiter-an older man walked by and said gruffly" the kitchen lost your order" and walked away. We looked at each other and waited, and waited. Finally we decided to pay for our drink and go elsewhere. That is when we heard the problem was the crab bruschetta "takes a long time" What? Then the kitchen lost our order. We got some apologies from him finally but that is all. A complimentary dessert or discount would have been appreciated since when all said and done it was about 1 and 1/2 hour or longer for a simple lunch. My mothers order was wrong she got salad instead of fries and no dressing on the salad. Another order was charged extra for blue cheese on the salad and she did not get it. The crab was delicious but not worth the wait or treatment we got that day. I hope things improve!

Lovely Cafe

By Elizabeth D |

When ever I am in Portland, I visit the cafe. LOVE the food, healthy portion sizes and a great selection. Exceptional service. It's a small cafe so just be patient - it's worth the wait!

Excellent Sunday breakfast

By Candy |

Found this place on the Internet and it is a gem. I had the chicken and waffles, very good and hubs had the biscuits and gravy and he was very happy. Service was excellent, especially considering it is Portland where service is generally meh, Will go back and save some time to explore the neighborhood, looked very interesting.

Cosy Dinner with Great Food

By Maggie O'C |

My husband and I walked in to this darling spot on Hawthorne last weekend. I hadn't been there in years. I had a festive ginger cocktail and my husband who doesn't drink was just going to go with water since they don't carry n/a beer. Our server wouldn't hear of that and brought him a fizzy ginger concoction of his own which was really good. It's actually a big deal to get that sort of service for a non-drinker. The fried chicken salad was so good, the dressing added flavor but didn't overpower the greens. We split it and it was huge! My stuffed pork chop was really good and I loved the mashed sweet potatoes. My husband had the steak skewer which would have been really good if he hadn't eaten the composed butter in one bite thinking it was a piece of seafood. I don't know. The service was good, friendly, unintrusive, fun. Great date night and we needed one! Thanks Bread and Ink!

Great Breakfast Spot

By CanucksFan1953 |

If you're in the funky Hawthorne neighborhood you can't go wrong with breakfast at the Bread and Ink. There were four of us and we all ordered egg disnes, scramble and omelets. These are simple dishes but they did them right, including some very tasty potatoes. Weekends can be crowded so come early or get it to go at the adjoining Waffle Window

Not going back

By lmfinley |

The food was good. Vibe was as if we were still mid-Covid. Shabby and cafeteria like. In need of some tlc for sure. Peeling paint and old spills

Great!

By Wilson C |

My family and I stopped in for lunch. The food was tasty and prepared well, and I can't say enough about how friendly the employees were. Would recommend for sure.

Yummy Chicken & Waffles

By marie g |

First time in the city of Portland. Stumbled upon the Window Waffle location and found out Bread and Ink is where you stand in line and order, get your own silverware, water and pick up your food, then bus your own tables. The chicken and waffles were great! We also ordered the banana strawberry waffles but were missing the bananas. Strawberries were old, good amount of whipped cream though! Busy street, no parking. We will be back to try other items on the menu. Or at least order those yummy chicken waffles!

Don’t bother

By pete |

Horrific service, like no service at all!. No beer but one. The teenager was ignorant about everything in the place, and the apparent owner seemed completely out of it.

Not really worth a wait

By PocketBob |

This place has a loyal following, but I wasn't that impressed. Portions are relatively small and the price is what I would consider above average for breakfast. If you order a breakfast entrée and a cup of coffee, together with tip you're looking at roughly $16 - $20 per person. You could feed a family of four two times over for that price. This would all be fine if the food was of the "How did they do that?" or "I could never make this myself" variety. It's not. Biscuits were average. Egg dishes showed little inspiration. Potatoes seemed (not sure) vendor purchased and not homemade. And due to portion issues, I was hungry afterwards. Service rose to the same level, i.e. average. In summary, although it has a nice neighborhood vibe, it's not worth waiting for -- not worth the time nor the money.

Bohemian Fare & Great Food

By cher2116 |

You could just drink water and people watch the day away, but the food is freshly made and delicious. Had chicken wrap and fresh made fries. Service is good, somewhat slow and inconsistent on speed. But on a sunny weekend who's in a rush. Recommend highly.

Good breakfast and nice staff !

By anne m |

The perfect place for a large breakfast! Prices a very decent for the quality and amount of food. The staff is kind and helpful and it has quickly become my breakfast HQ in hawthorne!

Waffle search

By David L |

Just a short one, great food (belgium suger waffles and egg; sunny side up) and very good sevice. Celebrating buying a house in Portland area, wish my wife and kids were here.

Best chicken and waffles!

By Joana P |

We came here one day for breakfast at the waffle window which is in the same facility but we decided to sit down and look at the menu. You can order the waffles on the waffle window menu with a small fee. We ended up having the chicken and waffles. WOW! We have gone back 3 times just for them! They come out with a lemon aioli dressing on the side that is to die for. The breaking is perfect bc it's not too thick and the chicken is so juicy. My favorite breakfast so far!

Two visits. First incredibly good, second insultingly bad.

By JojoDaisyDaisy |

I went here first on a Sunday morning for brunch. The place was jammed, but the hostess found me a table for one almost right away. A nice young man came to take my order, he was friendly, brought the coffee quickly and delivered the food piping hot. Chicken and waffles, delicious! Went back the next day for breakfast. The place was pretty empty. Brusque waitress took my order, deposited a dirty, sticky water jug on my table and left. I asked her for a clean water jug. Without saying a word, she removed the jug and left. I asked for eggs sunny side up. The waitress plopped the plate down on the table and left before I could say "THESE EGGS ARE BROKEN!". I mean who serves obviously broken eggs to a customer? I managed to get her attention and she merely said she would get her manager...so I waited, and waited and after five minutes I got up and left. I rally wanted to like this place.

Best breakfast I have ever had. Sorry, Mom

By llarsLosAngeles |

Try the waffles. I figured since they had a waffle window, they might have wonderful waffles. Not disappointed in the least. Crisp on the outside and soft and vanilla-flavored on the inside. The best breakfast I have ever had. Plus they make their own syrup, not any bottled, maple-flavored goop. It is flavored with a spice. Unique and just plain wonderful. Their coffee is strong, high octane and the contrast of sweet waffles with their Joe is absolutely wonderful. Waffles also come with a side of fresh fruit and whipped cream. The restaurant looks out on Hawthorne Street, where there is always a parade of harmless characters. Even saw a guy go by in a old fashioned, big wheel bicycle. Fine dining!!!

I had high hopes for this place having heard many good things. Sadly, disappointed I am. The polenta potato smash...

By KyleDPDX |

I had high hopes for this place having heard many good things. Sadly, disappointed I am. The polenta potato smash looked good from the description, but was the strangest polenta I've yet to lay eyes upon. The smoked trout smash was acceptable, as long as smoked trout wasn't what you were looking for. I finally did find some, but it didn't have much of a smokey flavor, if any flavor at all, to it. Lastly, the mimosa was good if you need to increase your vitamin C intake (i.e. lot of OJ, not so much sparkling wine).

Nice lunch with friends

By lizzard333 |

We chose the Bread and Ink Cafe for lunch this week. The menu is varied and the interior is comfortable. The service was only ok, a bit disappointing - bit the food was very good once it got to our table.

A regular stop for us in Portland

By 44Boppa |

Bread and Ink is known for its waffle window. But it should be equally known for sit-down service inside. Located in what we were told is a former Rexall Drugstore, this place is run by people who obviously take their jobs seriously. They remember us even when we have not been in for six months or more. The menu portions are generous and we have never been disappointed.

Best burger

By justgo64 |

Found this gem on the east side, we were starving. The portions were plentiful and the burger was really really good. Husband had fried chicken which was great as well. Ambiance is fun and the location is in a cool neighborhood. Also enjoyed a local pinot grigio, hey it was vacation. Menu had lots to choose from, makes me wish we lived closer to enjoy the breakfast.

Funky breakfast joint with a waffle window!

By U8923CWlisah |

My husband said the waffles were awesome I had the biscuits and gravy with eggs which was delish! Great place in Hawthorne neighborhood, the Waffle window was super cute and next time I am gonna try the waffles. Great place to check out, you won't be disappointed. Our waitress was really sweet and great about refilling our coffees and waters too.

Great neighborhood find !

By Denisecott |

This was a great place that had really good food and good service. We shared their two signature dishes- waffles with fresh fruit over top and whipped cream and chicken and waffles with a side of cardamon sauce, and both were delish ! We will go back. Parking needs to be on one of the side streets, but with lots of shops along the way, it doesn't bother anyone at all !

Not bad breakfast

By hockeyaw19 |

Ate here on a sunday morning before heading to seattle. I had the ABC egg scramble dish that was fine and my wife had french toast. I also got a cinnamon roll which was huge but average on taste. We went at 12 and my wife wanted lunch food, but we were told breakfast is sold until 1230. It was a fine breakfast - but nothing extraordinary.

Perfect Brunch, Romantic Dinner

By Paul N |

The cafe atmosphere is nice and the eggs benedict were great served with slightly crunch hash browns and excellent mimosas. The night before we had clam linguini which I think could have been tastier with seasonings but we did return the following day so they do get so much right. I loved the scallops wrapped in prociutto as an appetizer. The wait staff is efficient, friendly, and professional. What's not to like?

We really enjoyed our lunch💚

By mroland61 |

We dropped in for lunch. Saw a fresh food cafe and stopped in. So glad we did. Everything was delicious & fresh. Would highly recommend.😊

Always Unbelievable

By SizzleBean |

This restaurant is always well worth the visit. I was wanting a nice brunch without the excessive waits that Portland Brunch spots are known for. I went in and was seated immediately! I got a scramble with fresh tomatoes, spinach and cheese and it was everything I could ask for...not to mention the HUGE biscuit with homemade berry spread. When they brought out the spread I thought, a little excessive...but, by golly...that jam holder was completely empty by the time I finished! Another thing I love is Chicken and Waffles...and if you get the waffles they are known for them! You won't ever regret them. They are pretty sweet, though. Overall, you can usually find easy parking in the neighborhood, and the food is amazing. There is a lot of shopping around there as well, so you can make a whole morning out of your trip to Hawthorne!

Best Waffles ever, everything else is good too

By BromleyJules |

We ate here twice, once from the waffle window and had the best tasting and loveliest waffles $5 can by. I had the avocado, bacon and Jalopenos one, and my wife had the Canadian, just awesome. We also are inside for breakfast 3 days later and this was great also. We had the omelettes and two eggs any style service, value and food was excellent. The Strawberry jam that comes with your choice of bread is the best we've ever had, so full of fruit and just like your Nana use to make.

Clumsy cafe food, average quality for spendy lunch

By B V |

too rich too fried too clumsy lunchtime fare, though the salad was dressed well, small protein portions and spendy lunchtime pricing equalled an average at best experience on the occasion. Bread choice was ignored in favour of a sugary bun for the iny salmon 'burger', the club sandwich was waaay too rich and fries were greasy, unimpressed at this price point

Eggs and salmon

By SailorHR40 |

Great breakfast place, the eggs and salmon with briani bread or bagels are favorite. Coffe is strong and the service is friendly. we drive from Beaverton every other month.

Great place!

By volley321 |

This is one of my favorite restaurants. We usually go for breakfast and sometimes we do end up with a bit of a wait but it never anything unbearable and it's worth it. The food is always amazing and the staff is great. I frequently recommend this restaurant.

I enjoyed a wonderful brunch here!

I enjoyed a wonderful brunch here!

a bit spendy for the portion size, but creative entrees and good food.

Great brunch

By Tanis R |

Popped in here while we were in the Hawthorne District today, as they were still serving brunch and that was what he wanted. Great little café right on Hawthorne that is ripe for people watching. Service was prompt and attentive: our waitress had to come back a couple of times because their menu is SO good that I absolutely couldn't make up my mind. I settled on the popcorn shrimp salad, and my partner had an omelette, hashbrowns and a scone. His scone was so good, with hints of lemon, and came with a nice strawberry jam. And his main meal came with homemade ketchup! It was a really tasty touch and he devoured everything quickly. My salad was full of sliced almonds, dried cranberries, fresh orange and the aforementioned popcorn shrimp which I know isn't good for me, but it was damned tasty. Another great touch was that the gentleman that seated us immediately brought over a carafe of water, and when my partner ordered coffee, our waitress simply left him a small pot: very thoughtful. Overall we took a chance on another restaurant and were very pleased. And I must say that I was eyeballing other peoples' meals and they looked great as well.

Crowded and worth the wait...

By Linda W |

I can't believe I said "crowded and worth the wait"; I hate waiting. The coffee is outstanding the breakfasts are truly, really to die for. My picky, diva of a sister practically licked the rhubarb strawberry jam out of its little container. I went with freinds; we all got something different and everything was outstanding.

Excellent breakfast!

By LJP99 |

We thoroughly enjoyed our breakfast here. The service was great and the short, estimated wait was very accurate. The menu choices were varied (healthy egg breakfasts to th decadent waffles - I snuck a taste of my daughter's serving and they were delicious!). The best touches are the homemade condiments and the local art on the walls. They us feel welcome with our young child and offered her crayons and paper. We were only visiting Portland, but we would be regulars if we lived close by!

Waited way too long for anyone to take my order

By ELBSeattle |

Pros: great location. Great-looking, varied menu. Con: I was seated and sat at the table for 15 minutes without anyone coming to take my order. This is WAY too long to sit without being acknowledged. It's not like my table was in an out-of the way place, either. I was right in front of the kitchen window. Waiters and other staff walked by my table dozens of times. I know it's cliche to say 'you have only one chance to make a good impression.' But it's true. And Bread and Ink blew it.

Birthday Brunch.

By SassyGirlJenna729 |

I brought my nephews here for a birthday brunch, their choice. The food is delicious, the portions hearty and the service excellent. We sat in my favorite round table at the back of the restaurant and had a great time eating and people-watching. Great experience, as always.

Way to treat a group of 8

By Mary R |

Our large family was hungry for breakfast and Bread and Ink Cafe was our destination. Food was delicious, service was great, and the menu has something for everyone! Thank you!

Great breakfast, great atmosphere

By Greg W |

Went here for breakfast since my grandson loves their waffles. This was my first time. I had the chicken and waffles which I never had before. They were great. We also got high marks for the apple omellet. Everyone loved their food. You definitely have to try this place.

Good spot on Hawthorne

By Anthracene |

Cafe/restaurant rather than bar vibe. Great food and service. A little expensive, but worth it (and happy hour prices are very reasonable). Good luck parking, though!!

Delicious Risotto

By Ariella35 |

I come here occasionally as I have a child who attends the nearby Japanese immersion school in the neighborhood. Mostly the food served is very tasty, brunches especially being popular and note worthy though there is often a wait. Once in awhile something isn't quite up to my expectations. The drinks ie cocktails in particular are often a tad light on the alcohol in my opinion. I had a "front porch" drink recently, that despite the lime and blackberries was without much flavor. However, I was there on Saturday 8-18-2012 and ordered the Caprese Risotto dish. It had all kinds of heirloom tomatoes, fresh cheese and plentiful basil. It was simply wonderful! And I'm picky about Risotto as I like to make it at home. The fresh bread was great as well. My friend's pesto shrimp pasta was also enjoyable and delicious. The hand made ice cream was a good end to our meal as well. Overall I enjoy a lot of the menu, the wait staff has always been informative and kind, and you get to enjoy the quirks of the Hawthorne neighborhood out the big glass windows during your meal. Which is the proverbial "keep Portland weird" experience if you're new to the city.

Great find!!

By Donald J R |

While in the Hawthorne district the other day, a friend an me went to the Bread and Ink Cafe, What a find!! I had such an enjoyable time while I was here, that i had to write about it. The service was friendly, the atmosphere very nice and the food was remarkably delicious. I went a friend, his recommendation, and I am really glad I did. We had the bread and butter which came to the table. If you are like me, I love bread, and this delighted in it's texture (crusty crust and soft on the inside) and it came with butter pats. It was so good that my friend and me got a second basket. We both ordered the the grilled whrimp sandwich. It was on cibatta bread (more yum) and had a sauce, that while made with raw egg, was very delicious. The shrimp were cooked perfectly, tender and delicious. It came with a mango salsa, your mouth watering yet? There is also a choice of a side, fries, soup or house salad. We chose one of the soup selections, zucchini provence, and it was a cup of some of the most delicious soup i've had in a long time. The only regret I had, was that I had to leave, however, I'm going back. We didn't have the waffles (this time) for which I heard they are known for. Especially the chicken and waffles. This is of course a good reason for a return visit. But then I don't really need one. In fact as i finish typing this review, I'm considering going back. Please do yourself and those you love a favor, and go here.

Perfect Happy Hour

By avidtravs3 |

We loved the happy hour here. Tried three different things (Argentine beef, lemon pine nut meatballs, and veggie and hummus plate) and all three were fabulous and very reasonably priced. Nice selection of beer and ciders too. We would highly recommend this place! We sat outside and enjoyed people watching on Hawthorne Street.

Unique Breakfast and Reasonable Prices

By Sommer75 |

This restaurant is known for its "Waffle Window" which looked very busy but we went inside where we could sit down and enjoy some very flavorful and unique breakfast fare. I had the pancakes which were light and silky smooth with a cardamon syrup which is very good. The others had the fried chicken and waffle. The fried chicken is simultaneously crispy and moist and the waffles were perfectly caramelized on the outside with a light steamy freshness in the middle.

New Favorite

By rnpruett |

In the heart of the Hawthorn district. We stopped for lunch and were really happy we did. Salads and sandwiches we fresh and full of flavor. The Waffle Window is in the side street and their customers were also seated in the Restaurent. Full bar with good selection of wine and beer also. Great place to watch the ever eclectic passer buys.

"Old Faithful!"

By Richard B |

After I recently moved back to PDX, I wanted to go exploring some of my "old haunts" with a good dining buddy. We landed at BVrean and Ink...after another fave had no seating (it was a last-minute effort, BTW). WOW, was I pleased with how this little old neighborhood standard had just "aged gracefully." The food was "uber-comfort," and perfectly matched to the chilly night...warmed and pleased both palate and tummy; "classic "man food!" YUMMY! The service was nicely provided by a very pleasant young lady...so friendly and caring. The prices are right for the food and atmosphere, and I left after a great dinner, good dessert, washed down with my favorite pilsner on draught. GO to the Bread and Ink and enjoy an old-fashioned comfort meal simply and professionally prepared!

We'll be back again

By anilif |

A co-worker suggested that spot, knowing I like bloody Mary's. They were delicious, just the perfect amount of spice. We also got breakfast, my husband and I both had omelets. I had the apple, onion, bacon with roasted potatoes, Excellent! He had the ABC omelet and hash browns, he inhaled them, so I know they were great. We also had toast with a strawberry jam that was fresh and chunky. Our waitress was very attentive, they bring a carafe of water to the table, which is a nice touch. Check out this spot!! I'll be back to try a waffle.

Breakfast with the family while visiting from Bama

By Beverly B |

Absolutely loved this place! Unrushed atmosphere with a relaxing vibe. The food was so delicious, everyone was happy with their choice. Will definitely be back to try everything on the menu. The chicken and waffles are phenomenal as well as the strawberry dream waffles served with bacon and eggs. Take a special coffee to go. The food was served quickly in spite of a steady flow of business. Great place to enjoy good food and company.

Late family breakfast

By Jessica K |

There is inside seating. Order at the counter, pick up at the counter, self bus tables. Good breakfast selection, with a nice take on the waffle and fried chicken dish. Seemed like the place had a lot of orders for takeout and less people sitting to eat. We enjoyed our meals.

Brunch

By AMPSTCA |

My wife and I shared a crab Omelet and half order of waffles. It was perfect. The crab cake and the waffle was excellent.

Great breakfast and kid friendly

By David D |

We stopped by with two children, 3 & 7 yrs old, and the food, service and atmosphere were all great. While chocolate chip pancakes were not on the menu, the chef was able to find some chocolate chips and make them as a surprise for the kids. The fruit covered Belgium waffles and omletes were fantastic.

Delicious late lunch

By BldrHts |

My friend and I ventured over to Hawthorne Avenue to check out the neighborhood and wandered into this restaurant. What a find!!! The service was fantastic and the food-amazing. My friend had the chicken and waffles and I had the waffle special: belgian waffles with strawberries and whipped cream with a side of special cardamom syrup. The best ever.

Great selections, huge portions

By Wanderlust |

Stopped here for brunch on our last day. Huevos rancheros were delicious, as were the biscuits and jelly, French toast with bananas and the fruit covered waffle! The fruit covered waffle was probably the best of all. All of the portions were large and filling. No wait for seating, small wait for food. Try it!

Great brunch

By Dian P |

Their homemade bread is terrific - thick, not dry, rich. Love it! Eggs Benedict superb. Had a romantic dinner the night before so we went back. Recommend.

Good lunch

By Cindy Z |

Had a sandwich and fries, Loved the Ketchup, they make it here. I ate the whole jar. Can't remember the sandwich.

Good food!

By Judith M |

This is another of the Hawthorne area's fine restaurants. It has a sort of nuevo cuisine feel without being too stuffy.

Fun atmosphere with above average fare

By Ryan.W |

I enjoyed the atmosphere and staff of this restaurant. Went for Sunday brunch with friends; service and food good. Only comment: a bit of tang in the hollandaise sauce for the Lox Eggs Benedict. Maybe a tad too much lemon? Would return.

waffles and seating

By skifood |

nice to be able to have waffles within the shared restaurant space, and order other foods off the menu. everything was well made, fresh and the waitress was exceptionally friendly and helpful.

Great Happy Hour

By Edward H |

This is the very first restaurant we patronized in Portland seven years ago — we were actually on the hunt for the home we now own — and it remains a tried and true Hawthorne Blvd. staple with well prepared dishes and helpful service at fair prices. But I write now to report that Bread and Ink's happy hour is as much a bargain as any in Portland with decent portions of excellent options and $2.50 pints of draught ale.. The menu is on line at http://www.breadandinkcafe.com/Desserts.html

Ummemorable burger; terrible service.

Ummemorable burger; terrible service.

Good fried chicken & waffles

By Jules B |

Good atmosphere if it's busy but otherwise an average cafe. Food is good, especially the Fried Chicken & Waffles.

Very nice menu.

By Lynne S |

We had planned to eat at the Waffle Window but it was rainy and cold so we went into Bread and Ink. The menu has a lot of interesting dishes and you can also order waffles from Waffle Window from the inside and have a nice warm place to eat. We had a great breakfast and split a waffle for dessert. Bread and Ink is in the Hawthorne District and there are lots of interesting shops to explore.

Not what it was

By Gabrielle P |

Really chaotic slow line. First you have to wait in line and order your food, then find a table (hopefully). There is no table service, you get your own water, silverware and food order when it’s ready. My family ordered skillets that were pretty good, though they were served in a bowl which was a little odd. The English muffins weren’t even toasted as they were still white and the coffee was burnt. The waggles used to have the most delicious carmelized sugar crust, now it’s just a subpar waffle, it wasn’t even worth eating more than a few bites. This is not the tasty breakfast spot I remember, not going back

...and it hasn't changed much since 1970. Nice open space in an old Portland retail building from the streetcar age, still make good bread on site (before Grand Central and Ken's and Pearl Bakery we used to go here simply to buy a good baguette), still make good meals. Still have butcher paper on the tables so you (or your kids) can draw or write poetry. Bread and Ink used to be a cooperative, maybe still is.

If you can get a waffle - do it!

By KendraTravels |

I never realized this place was separate from the Waffle Window but I'm glad I know this now. We went recently and had a great breakfast here. I stuck to the waffles though. Waffles with fresh berries and cream. It was excellent. My son had chicken and waffles - also great! I'd love to check it out again soon.

Love, Love, Love

By asq15 |

As you can tell from the title, I love the Bread and Ink Cafe!! The food is great and there are options available from the Waffle Window next door. It can get a little busy so early arrival is good or you can expect a bit of a wait (but it is well worth it).

Thanksgiving blessings

By jlevy49 |

A wonderful Thanksgiving meal at this friendly cafe was delightful, though a bit rushed. The chanterelle mushroom soup was superb, the traditional turkey plate and fixing well-prepared (and enough for lots of left-overs) and the apple crisp dessert perfect. The place was packed though not overwhelmingly noisy. It made for a relaxed and sumptuous holiday meal.

Varied foods, really nice location

By Hella B |

I went there twice the past few months - once because another place I was at had too long lines. Food is quite good, decent prices. Convenient location for drivers and users of public transportation. You can choose from a breakfast and a lunch menu - a big + for many of us. I am told their hash browns are awesome - may be worth asking your waitress - is this the cook today who makes the really crispy ones or can the cook who's here today make sure to do that? Learning experience: If you order a hash, does it come with the famous hash browns or another kind of potato? (I ordered one of the hashes expecting the awesome hash browns but it turns out this one had different potatoes in it. We ordered a variety - salads, omelette, burger, and everyone was happy. We are planning to go back for the chicken and waffle and to try the drinks. Great go-to.

Great salads and desserts

By shaq2003 |

Enjoyed a delicious fig and goat cheese salad. Also had a great shrimp sandwich. The chocolate layer cake, Pots de la Creme, Portuguese Flan and Salted Caramel Ice Cream were all delicious!

Excellent Breakfast Expierence

By William B |

I happened on this establishment while in Portland on a business trip. I was greeted by friendly wait staff that were attentive and professional. The service was spot on and prompt. The menu selection is diverse and I plan on returning to sample more of their delicious offerings. The quality of ingredients is excellent and the food and atmosphere there was great.

Spectacular Brunch

By LRT66 |

We felt a whole lot better about visiting Portland after having brunch in this restaurant. The neighborhood of Hawthorne is the "quintessential" Portland neighborhood. Yes, there was a wait for brunch on Sunday at noon, but only about 20 minutes, and it was certainly worth it. I had the special frittata: covered with heirloom tomatoes, arugala and lemon herb ricotta. This brunch came with choice of bread or a scone...opted for the cranberry scone and it was perfect. My daughter had the special pancakes with berries, lovely, lovely. You will enjoy it!!!

Pretty good breakfast. Great coffee. Uncomfortable seats.

Good food, kinda rude

By Heather W |

We get there and people were waiting, which is fine but they were so unorganized. They didn't have a hostess or anyone near the front door. You just stand there waiting for someone to acknowledge you. When someone finally walked up to me she was beyond rude, I told her how many people and she just walked away, how am I suppose to know what to do...follow her...stand there...what. We sit finally get seated...from there things were fine. The waiter was nice, wasn't rude which was refreshing. The food wasn't to bad. But if you can I would avoid it.

Cute, but service was disappointing

By Aaron M |

The location of this cafe was great. It's right on Hawthorne and they have huge windows which are perfect for people-watching. My issue is that on the two occasions I've been here, I have been ignored after my order was taken. No checking in, no offering refills, we had to get up to ask for the check. And they weren't even busy. There were two other couples in the cafe at any given time. Granted, we didn't order a lot, so we weren't a super-lucrative table, but a check-in would have been nice.

Comfort Food

By Timothy C |

Like a comfortable old shoe, Bread & Ink serves up solid food and drink in a warm and friendly atmosphere. From a good array of burgers and sandwiches to breakfast served until 3:00 pm, you will be rewarded with good service and tasty food. Well selected wine list and rotating craft beer taps.

Similar to Cup & Saucer...

By mnymarkf777 |

Similar to Cup & Saucer. This place has a tendency to fill up, so get up early and get a window seat!

Great food, interesting atmosphere

By Newfoundlander_7 |

I had visited this restaurant a few years ago for breakfast, and was delighted to see that it was still there - lunch this time. The food was great, and there was an excellent selection available; cost was not extravagant - the bread served with the meal was to die for; service was top notch - definitely a place to revisit when in Portland

Breakfast from Heaven

By gregduff |

Four years ago my wife and I discovered this amazing restaurant by accident. It is a funky place that does a great job for breakfast. The Hawthorne District of Portland is pretty funky so this place fits right in. We were in Vancouver, WA this weekend and drove the half hour for breakfast. I am glad we did. My wife had Pearl Sugar Waffles and I had Frisian French Toast. They were great and way too much food. I do recommend reservations if you get there after 8:30 or so in the morning. Our server told us he had been there 31 years so I am sure he will be there when we go back to the Bread and Ink next time we are in Portland.

Chicken and Waffles!

By helena218 |

I came here on a recommendation from a friend and I was not disappointed. We had a relatively large group so we tried out a bunch of different items and kindof passed them around and shared. Chicken and waffles were truly incredible (especially the maple syrup and the parmesan dip), the burgers were tasty and cooked the way you want it (yep medium rare instead of the usual charred through you get other places), macarooni and cheese that was super tasty, and the best lemonade ever!

i have tried to like it...but something is always off with both the food and service. mediocre.

Very tasty, worth the wait

By aabothell |

Came for breakfast with friends and had a great time. Chicken and waffles were great, although the waffles were a bit on the cold side - the chicken was fantastic. Well worth the wait (and weight) :)

Bread and Ink is great for an outstanding breakfast.

By Milestogo007 |

My brother recommended we try Bread and Ink and I am glad we did. The food here is very good, the service was great, and I really like how they leave a coffee pot at your table so you have plenty to drink. The menu has a lot of variety and options. On this day I chose the biscuits and gravy with the two eggs and a side of bacon. Everything was outstanding. My brother had the crab cake benedict which he enjoyed. Prices were reasonable. I highly recommend eating at Bread and Ink.

The waffles are more than you think.

By kell28 |

When I think of waffles, IHOP and frozen ones come to mind. Well, this place makes a much different one. It is like comparing a pond to the Pacific Ocean. They serve it with the best of other things, including...surprisingly...chicken. Service is also great. Go early or you will wait.

Very good food; slightly overpriced.

By Britt K |

My mom and my sisters and I were in Portland to explore. We ended up at the Bread and Ink Café while wandering Hawthorne Boulevard in search of dinner. The place was not very full, so it seemed perfect. Our server, Richie, was friendly and very helpful, although he seemed a bit distracted. We ordered the Dungeness crab and pine nut bruschetta for an appetizer, and it was delicious. Really rich and tasty! Two of us ordered the housemade blackberry basil lemonade to drink, and, for me, that was the highlight. It was so incredibly refreshing, and the flavors were perfectly balanced (not too much berry Ratatouille steak salad, ribs, and the shrimp sandwich. The spaghetti sauce had WAY too much garlic in it (one of the reasons for the rating of four), but the meatballs were excellent! The steak salad was "good", the ribs "messy but yummy", and the shrimp sandwich was "tasty, but there were only four little shrimp" (another reason for the imperfect rating). All in all, it was a good dinner, but not an excellent one.

Nice place to relax on Hawthorne St.

By bobandpeg97232 |

The food is great and the staff friendly. We had a wonderful dessert also. We had a wonderful evening.

Formerly The Hawthorne Cleaners

By Philwaukie |

I was one of its first customers, 30 years later it's still a fave. Eclectic menu with surprises, fairly attentive service. You won't go broke but in the past couple years we've noticed a decline in the value/price ratio. Used to be able to doodle & write on the "tablepaper," whilst downing baskets of warm bread (hence Bread & Ink), but not now. It was unique, it's not now, but if you haven't been, what do you care? You'll still find great meals in a nice room.

Tremendous breakfast - friendly staff

By Robsski |

A bit of a Hawthorne institution. The service is efficient and friendly and the food is freshly made-to-order and very good. Impressive spot as this cornerstone of the renaissance in Hawthorne has been banging out three meals a day for the past 30 years. We went for the chicken and waffles and one of the excellent omelettes with hash browns, smothered in their homemade fresh tomato ketchup. They do freshly baked, warm Cinnamon Rolls which literally melt in your mouth. Do check out their adjoining "hole in the wall" Waffle Window for takeaway Belgian Waffles. Try a waffle ice cream sandwich with fresh fruits of the forest & whipped cream. WOW! Many just queue at the window for a takeout, especially on lazy late Sunday mornings.

Best chicken and waffles I ever had

By MargMotelMgr |

During the course of a week long visit to Portland we tried so many places; from food carts, breakfast places, fine dining dinner locations. This was one of the best meals we had all week. Your fried chicken was the tops; moist, tender and just the right amount of crust.

Good Breakfast Place with a Lot of Options

By RedbeardTraveler |

We had an early breakfast here and were pleased. My breakfast was the Ham and Cheese Omelet with Roasted Potatoes and my dining partner had the Chicken and Waffles that he really liked. Service was good without being overbearing and I probably had the best cup of coffee that I've had since visiting Portland. Crazy, i know! Give this place a try. Like most good breakfast places in Portland, they get busy quickly.

Loved their Happy Hour

By Kj S |

My sister and I dropped in for Happy Hour while shopping on Hawthorne. She had the Dungeness Crab Bruscetta which she really liked. I had the vegan squash soup and a greek salad both of which were wonderful. Our waiter was friendly and gave us great service. Prices for dinner were much higher but I'm sure that it would be worth it just from the items we tried. The restaurant itself is relaxing with a nice vibe and simple decor. I would definitely come back again for Happy Hour.

Nice stop if you're in the neighborhood

By IdahoPug |

After a venturesome morning of wandering the Hawthorne district, including a full view of an illustrated man (stop in Hawthorne Ink and ask to see the tats!) my companion and I stopped into Bread and Ink for lunch. We were seated immediately and the waitress (who sported some ink of her own) brought us some pretty good coffee. We examined the menu and decided to honor the PNW by ordering the grilled shrimp burger. These sandwiches came to us on good sized ciabatta buns, filled with plump shrimp, fresh tomatoes, and crisp greens. The side dishes (curry soup and Caesar salad) were also fresh and tasty. We watched the passersby doing their part to Keep Portland Weird. I know there are a lot of restaurants in this neighborhood, but this is a great one to stop in and feed the fresh food need.

Mediocre at best

By Miinerva |

I'm not sure where to begin, except to say that my son and I will never make the mistake of returning. The food was mediocre at best. I ordered the migas scramble, and my son ordered the chicken and waffles. The food was overpriced for what it was. Before eating at Bread and Ink Cafe, I thought that Denny's was the epitome of bland tasting mediocre food. Now in retrospect, Denny's looks good, and is not as expensive. The silverware placed on the table had dried crusted food on it. I had to ask numerous times for salt, pepper and sugar as our table was lacking it. The 2nd page of the menu was missing printing, so the waitress had to bring another. Basically, it was a let down. There is a restaurant a block away called the "Cup and Saucer" that is delicious, friendly and more cost effective that I would recommend any day of the week.

blech

By bluemoon777 |

Love the location--but parking is HORRIBLE!!! Cold, wet day--wanted cozy food, and warm friendly service. WE CAME TO THE WRONG PLACE. Had a nice table by the window--Server was rude and pissy. We tried to laugh but it wasn't funny. Ordered blintzes--remember--warm, cozy food? Was thinking I would get a side--baked apples--something/ Plate arrived--hmmm--lots of white plate-- then I noticed 3 rectangular thin bars the size of a business card--lined-up in a row--drizzled with something brown--and sprinkled with powder sugar. Odd--I was expecting these generous, entities of filo-like dough bursting with a cream cheese filling--hot and golden-- and the sweet-smell wafting through the air. WRONG--there were warm--okay--about 2 bites each-- not sure of filling--not that there was much-- service was slow and pissy, and food well--disappointing is an understatement--and it was expensive. We left cold, hungry, and very unhappy.

Breakfast, lunch or dinner -- good choice & variety

By JWP8 |

Alas, we didn't try their famous waffles in our two visits. But enjoyed the pot of coffee at our table, excellent poached eggs in a.m. and burgers, Caesar salad and clam linguine in the evening. Good and timely service. Very pleasant ambiance.

Good Food at Lunch

By Pat D |

We had lunch here. The food was very good. I had a salad nicoise which had a nice variety of salad items. My husband had the brisket BBQ sandwich which he raved about. My only quibble is that it took awhile for someone to take our order and then again to bring the check. This would be a nice place for a leisurely lunch.

Best bialys in the city

By Allison V |

One of the best brunches in the city in the colorful Hawthorne neighborhood of southeast Portland! Omelets, scrambles, fried chicken and waffles...

Expensive, average food

By Lauren M |

On a slow Monday at noontime, we got coffee quick but had to ask a few times to get water. French toast that I was excited about from the online menu apparently is not served after 1130 on weekdays, which seems pretty arbitrary. They did customize a scramble for me to include salmon, but that made it $16. Pretty pricey for an average scramble. It did come with an above-average biscuit. There are a few vegan options. My friend said the chicken & waffles was good. Next time I'd skip the restaurant and just get some waffles from the window.

Delicious and unique as Portland!

By coolmammaa |

Place is very pleasant and service was great! I had a mushroom omelet with raspberry toast which was phenomenal their coffee was top notch and the experience was 10!!!!

good stop on hawthorne

By decham |

stopped in for a lunch. the crab bruschietta was quite good, as well as the shrimp burger. service was good, and seated at a table by window provided amusements fom the street theater always present in this zone. a conspicuous person across the way offered free therapy on his cardboard sign. many local shops proximal same. the knife shop just down the way will get another review, but positive, to say the least. if you are in this area of portland, check it out.

A great little lunch spot

By alig0925 |

We visited Bread and Ink for a late lunch. Our server was pleasant and popped by to see how we were doing frequently. My husband and I both ordered salads and they came out quickly. The food really hit the spot and the service was excellent. .

Great cafe

By deanosor |

Great cafe in a funky neighborhood. Great breakfasts. My only problem was the wait. There were so many people the wait was about an hour.

Lunch with family

By afyrfytr |

Had lunch with family here today, some had the daily specials, others items from the regular menu. Everything was great, I had breakfast, wife had a salmon sandwich and salad, brother had a shrimp sandwich, another had chicken and waffles, lastly sister in law had a grilled chicken salad. All big portions at a reasonable price. Then we split a couple desserts, both very good, no beyond that!

Amazing!

By Hartimage |

Best place we visited on Hawthorne Street - hands down! Everything here is the best. The service, the food, the originality, the vibe - can't say enough good things about this operation!

The best fluffy waffles!

By Heather S |

For breakfast and happy hour, Bread and Ink rocks. They're known for their waffles, and they have a daily special for each (with fresh, seasonal fruit). On warm days, you can also get their waffles at the Waffle Window, which is part of Bread and Ink, just not in it! I also appreciate their happy hour: good food, cheap!

No indoor option-just a order pickup window

By medfordnjmom |

Disappointed -just a waffle window and a few outdoor seats! Looks like they are doing renovations inside the restaurant. Didn’t see anything on the website about they though!

A quick stop in for lunch

By Kevin N |

We had just arrived in Portland and were pretty hungry. We noticed Bread and ink and were attracted by it's charm. I have nothing negative to say about this place as the food was excellent as was the service. We were there for an early lunch so it was not too busy. Our waitress was very pleasant and really helpful. It was a fantastic start to our trip and i would recommend this restaurant to anybody wanting really good food.

A great brunch choice on a holiday

By dstalcup |

Choices were limited on this past Independence Day at 2:30 p.m., but we we're glad to see that these guys were open for a return visit, as we we hungry. We ordered a few stiff and well garnished Bloody Mary's ($7.75 each) to get our appetite going, followed by a brisket eggs Benedict with poached eggs and roasted potatoes ($14.50), and a migas (sunny side up eggs together with tortilla chips and a side of hash browns ($10.95). It was all nice with coffee and attentive service, $50 with tip. It's always good to have a late breakfast, and you can count on them being open, even on a holiday when most other places were closed.

Great location and food

By zuni P |

Really liked this spot. Close to all hat is happening in the SE Hawthorne district. Curried chicken was fantastic. Swiss mushroom burger was great. Good coffee.

Cool atmosphere and good food

By SeattleTef |

You have a choice of a waffle from the outside window or you can sit down inside and order food and cocktails. My family split a BLTA and burger with fries and we each had a side salad. The food was very good, the burger was cooked perfectly. The service was ok and we enjoyed our time at the Bread and Ink.

Seemed like a nice place ...

By Jeff Z |

We tried to get into a few places. The Screendoor and Mother's had lines out the door, wrapped round the block. Decided to try here. When we were seated, everyone around seemed to be enjoying their food and everything looked good. Our waitress took our order and they took a while to get it to the table. It was cold. We waited a while before eventually digging in, since our waitress never came back until after we had finally finished. Disappointing, really. Held such promise, but we will give this place a miss in future.

Reasonable place to eat on Hawthorne

By cumbria_lake |

We ate there early (just after 6pm) so the place was fairly empty. The atmosphere is fairly flat and the check-in lady was a little brusque but the waitress was friendly and helpful. The food was good. My wife had two fairly ordinary starters but they were very well-presented and she really enjoyed them. She also had good things to say about the Negroni. Beer choice is pretty good. We would certainly go again but probably later in the evening, although its a great place to people-watch the Hawthorne passers-by!

What a great tasting suprise!

By Kim S. |

We were in Portland visiting and stumbled upon this place for breakfast. The food was delicious and the service was great! Would recommend the chicken fried chicken.

Even the leftovers were scrumptious

By Janis L |

The cashier in the Sellwood New Leaf Market suggested a visit to Hawthorne during our Portland stay. We really enjoyed window (and actual) shopping and just taking in the local vibe. My sister/cousins were hungry and were tempted by the Waffle Window around the corner, but ultimately opted for an outdoor table at the restaurant. I dashed across the street for a haircut at a local salon. I returned with a more manageable mane just as they were wrapping up the leftovers. My lucky day! I was treated to a super moist piece of fried chicken and a bit of crispy waffle (YUM!) and some mac and cheese that my sis described as the best she'd ever had. Was she ever right! It was delicious. My cousin had had the roasted fig and gruyere cheese salad, but alas, had finished every bite. My loss. I can't comment on the service (there have been some complaints registered by other reviewers) but my kin had nothing but praise for this place.

Tasty waffles and chicken

By Ottawajester |

Stopped in for lunch. Service was quick with the kids' meals arriving very quickly. The chicken and waffles were delightful - fluffy and sweet waffles with tasty chicken in light batter. The salmon sandwich special was very good as was the popcorn chicken salad and the breakfast hash. I would recommend you take a pass on the fried oysters and salad. A bit noisy as sound echos quite a bit. Would however recommend you stop in. Well worth it.

Great burger !

By Dave R |

We went for lunch here, had the mushroom and Swiss cheese burger and soup Both delicious, great service... Real good comfort food. They have an amazing breakfast menu also....try this place Great value and cozy room. If to busy Try the waffle window outside, part of the restaurant

Disappointed

By TnEShlaes |

It has been a few years since I has eaten here and I was sorely disappointed. I had the green chili pulled pork omelet and it was tasteless. I had to add lots of hot sauce for any kinds of taste and the pulled pork was tough. Not at all what I expected. There were chunks of green chilis in the omelet and a green colored sauce on top but no flavor. The homemade buttermilk biscuits were good. Service was not up to par as I was ignore by several wait staff for ten minutes before anyone acknowledged I was there.

Excellent Hawthorne neighbourhood breakfast spot.

By Norman B |

Made a reservation online the night before which simplified things for a busy Sunday morning. Service was efficient. The restaurant had already scored points with me after I ordered coffee for myself by providing a full pot for the table with sugar and cream in containers instead of individual servings in those stupid and messy packets. My wife and I split the Belgian Pearl Sugar Waffles with slices of apple covered in the house cardomom syrup. Absolutely delicious. I had a side of moderately seasoned and very tasty sausage patty with mine. My daughter had the Skillet Scramble which she thoroughly enjoyed. The coffee was good. Wife and daughter on the other hand had blackberry mimosas which they said were excellent. Nice ambiance although it is quite noisy. Overall, a highly recommended neighbourhood breakfast spot. Can't wait to try it for lunch and dinner.

I love the food, service and convenience.

By kell28 |

Great food. We went twice for breakfast, waffles are great, jam is even better and all the food (it comes in large portions) is great. On our next visit to Portland we will go for lunch and dinner. Service was prompt and friendly. Also, they make their own Catsup with its own texture...be sure to try it.

Chicken N' Waffles!

By DestinationAZ |

Absolutely, hands down, one of the best meals I've ever had in my life! The chicken tenders were spicy and juicy, the waffles had the pearlized sugar in them and were perfectly cooked and sweet, and the awesome sauce that comes with it, you only use a fork to be nice. You'll totally want to devour this deliciousness!

Hawthorne Blvd's Comfort Food Wizards!

By FlyingCapricorn |

While traveling around Portland neighborhoods for work I realized I needed to eat. I drove up and down the Hawthorne Blvd and saw this was one of the busiest places so it must be good. Well, it was and is! I wanted breakfast for lunch since my oatmeal didn't do the trick earlier in the day. I settled on the grilled black bean cakes (yum!) with poached eggs and roasted potatoes. The comfort food kitchen wizards delivered me a very good breakfast lunch. The friendly service from several people on the floor only made this quick lunch stop a pleasant one. The oh-so usual hip Portlanders only made it that much more local and one to recommend to others. Thank you!

One Word: French Toast

By Blahblahb |

Well . . . maybe that was two words. Great menu, great fresh food, a bit pricey -- $30 for breakfast for two. But overall just what to expect from an iconic Portland eatery. People watching alone worth it (but Hawthorne Bl has its own cast of characters). A lot of people line up at the outside Waffle Window, but we sat indoors with no wait.

Yummy in the Tummy

By Kathy D |

I had the waffles that seemed encrusted with something (like carmelized sugar) and covered with apples and whipped cream. So Good! The pumpkin spice latte was the best ever!!! We went on a Sunday and had a few minutes wait--not bad. This place is busy and it's worth the wait! We will eat here again next time in Portland.

Lox and Bagel Rocks

By Pamela D |

Love Bread and Ink Cafe. Have dined there for years off and on. Well done classic Jewish food to French.

Bad service!

By Tourist |

Good food but terrible service! We never were asked if we wanted anything to drink, and after our food was delivered our waitress never came back to ask if we needed anything. Very slow, not enough servers. It took about 1/2 hour after we ate to get the check. Servers were not very friendly.

Great for Hangovers

By Gorancito G |

I visited this cafe with a bunch of friends during our long weekend in Portland. We were initially attracted by the waffle window that we noticed the day before. There eas a short lineup to get in but we we were easily sat a table lrge enough for our party of six. I ordered "Max's Mixed Breakfast Skillet". It's basically skillet with ham, bacon, chorizo and roast potatoes - no eggs. That's how they describe it in the menu - all the stuff you want and none that you don't. It comes with a choice of toast or scone or biscuit, with a most amazing raspberry jam. Excellent breakfast for $10.25. You can add eggs as a side for $3.50. It's a great, vibrant, location.

Taking Cafe's to the Next Level

By Sam DeLiso |

Indulge yourself in this "elevated" corner cafe's creatively on-point offerings, laid back service, and well lit location. I'm a proud, self proclaimed Biscuits & Gravy snob who would gladly return for the same serving only a day later, having thoroughly enjoyed the perfectly portioned mound of 2 fluffy biscuits slathered with sufficiently spiced, housemade sausage gravy, scallions, and 2 eggs anyway you like it (plus a great deal at only $9.99... almost unheard of). Incredible flavor, definitely made the top ten out of hundreds tried. My girlfriend, equally if not more picky than I, ravaged her plate of the black bean Benedict accompanied by their savory home fries/chopped potatoes and garnished with a tantalizing mango salsa. Let's not forget their lengthy list of innovative, booze infused breakfast beverages (some non-alcoholic too), including several concoctions of their own along with unique twists on traditional favorites, such as the blackberry basil Mimosa...mmm! Can't wait to return! I would highly recommend this establishment for a quiet, low-key morning meal, a hyped-up hipster outting on Hawthorne, or whatever you're in the mood for....great neighborhood if you hadn't noticed while starting at Google maps. Thanks! Best, ~S

The best fried chicken ever, Leige waffles to die for

By Julia D |

The best breakfast you will ever eat: fried chicken and Leige waffles. The chicken is white mat, and several with lemon Parmesan sauc on the side for dipping. Great coffee!

Don't upset the wait staff

By Ken M |

I went for a quick dinner the reviews were mixed but thought to try it. I ordered the pasta with salmon but when it came ..the fish must have been out to sea. I mentioned this to the server and she said she did not hear that..okay mistake made.. no biggie.but thereafter acted like a death occurred. Seriously make it right and move on. By a drink or offer too..the food was good the drink as well but the service? Go to subway..not the portland that I know..

Cheap and fast dinner

By Michelle159263 |

I have gotten dinner here multiple times and have always loved it. There are delicious pastas and a great burger but what I appreciate most is that I've never had to wait for a table when I've gone for dinner. Though it is crowded for breakfast and lunch, around 5.00 happy hour starts and nobody's there. The food is always fast and hot and the house-made sodas are to die for.

Beyond Delicious

By honeymooner09 |

I ate here last week for the second time, in town visiting friends. I came back for a reason...it's very very good! Both times I've been here I've come for breakfast. Their espresso is rich and perfect. We were seated right away, surprising I thought for a Saturday morning, the rush seemed to be focused on the walk up waffle window on the side of the building. I ended up getting the Belgian Pearl Sugar Waffles with fresh peaches. Wow! Love people watching from the window, too!

A great place for brunch

By Greg W |

It's all about the waffles at this restaurant and I don't think you can go wrong. I had the scramble and it too was very good.

Second breakfast

By Eugene E |

Great waffles! Sunday brunch breakfast menu only but it's worth the "second breakfast". I want to return for a different meal.

great food, nice atmosphere, friendly people

By MIchelle D |

Had a wonderful breakfast here. Food was very high quality and delicious. Service was excellent. Would recommend highly.

Interesting cusine.

By YueYou |

Interesting tasty food. I believe I have actually expanded my own cooking efforts because of dishes I have tried at the Bread & Ink.

Great Cafe for Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

By PaulParks |

I mostly come here for breakfast, but I think their lunch and dinner offerings are a good value too. And the atmosphere is inviting at all times of day. Good coffee and espresso. Some creative menu items as well as well done standards. This time, she had the fried oysters. They were great. I had a skillet. They did not fail to skip the potatoes and give me extra spinach just like I asked.

YUMMY!

By Stephanie A |

Their biscuits are to die for! Delicious breakfasts for not a ton of money! My friend was in love with their bacon :) next time I'm definitely trying their waffles!

I think the waffle window and the breakfast would be better than dinner at the restaurant.

By Daniel D |

My wife and I received a gift certificate here for Christmas and finally got around to checking it out. Overall we were dissappointed. We ordered the grilled shrimp appetizer, the mac and cheese and the fried chicken. Both the fried chicken and grilled shrimp were burnt. The flavors weren't bad on the parts that weren't burnt, but unfortunately most of it was. I don't know if they were going for a blackened cook on the food, but unfortunately it just tasted burnt. The Mac n' cheese was really good though it needed some salt which we added and it was much better. The Mac N' Cheese was the best thing we ordered. Overall, I hear the breakfast is pretty solid so maybe we should have come for that. We did not have the waffle window but we have heard good things about that as well. We won't be back for dinner but possibly for the window.

My husband chose this restaurant for his birthday. We had a delightful fried oyster appetizer, Gulf shrimp in a wonderful sauce, and delicious fried chicken in a panko-type breading. We celebrated the birthday with Bread and Ink's special cassata (Italian wedding cake) and a bottle of wine. Bread and Ink's house bread was delicious as always. Service was excellent. This restaurant can be a little uneven, but this particular meal was wonderful.

Quick friendly service and tasty food

Had the chicken and waffles. Add a bit of hot sauce and it was amazing. The Bloody Mary is also house made and very tasty. The black bean cakes have a great texture and flavour

Wonderful place for lunch! Can't wait to return!

This was one of the most delicious lunches we have had on our travels. My husband had the fried oysters, while I had the popcorn chicken salad. My husband said these were the best oysters he has ever had. The popcorn chicken on my salad was incredible...nothing like what I had imagined. We tried the Mango Coconut Run sorbet for dessert, which my husband loved...it was ok for me. Service was great, atmosphere was perfect for an eclectic part of Portland. We can't wait to go back!

Good choice for a relatively upscale breakfast or lunch on this stretch of Hawthorne.

Funky and vibrant reataurant

We found this restaurant on Easter Sunday 2013 at around 11am. It was very busy, being Easter Sunday and all, but after a short wait we were seated. Very funky vibe here. Kinda bohemian/earth child/hippie/new age. Really friendly servers too! My wife had waffles (yup, waffles) with fresh strawberries and whipped cream while I had fresh dungeness crabcakes benedict (eggs benedict on crabcakes). Delicious! The eggs were perfect and the crabcakes were very tasty. Also had a very tasty polenta. Will definitely visit again on our next trip.

Superb eatery in the heart of Hawthorne

Excellent food, excellent service. This morning I had the opportunity to dine at Bread and Ink in Portland Oregon. The food is Vegetarian with many Vegan options. I ordered the Black Bean cakes that come with poached eggs on top as well as an excellent salsa, a side of roasted potatoes and home made ketchup really made this dish. My date had a beautiful fruit bowl with fresh fruits from the area. The service was fantastic. Water was kept full and the staff was considerate and prompt. Overall, the homemade food was to die for. I will dine again.

Huge and satisfying lunch

This is a very funky but friendly place on a funky street with hearty, tasty food in huge portions. Had a tasty turkey club and great fries that left me almost too full. A great Bloody Mary with a virtual salad of spicy veggies on top was excellent!

Dependable

Whenever we need a good solid meal, we are sure we can get one at the Bread & Ink Cafe. Happy hour has some substantial dishes, which seems to be rare in Portland now . Dinner is always well prepared food, from pastas and burgers to King Salmon. Great for breakfast, where you can get the standards and some more imaginative things, plus delicious waffles.
