Shared a delicious, cozy brunch at Broder with a good friend. We were the last table to be seated int he first wave of brunch (so get there early!), and loved the friendly, warm ambiance and cozy decor. We had a tough time deciding what to order, but settled on the smoked trout pytt i panna (Swedish hash) and the friterade applen (apple fritters). Both were great!! Perfect portion sizes, delicious food, very reasonably priced, and lovely service. Would happily return to try the rest of the menu.

We had to wait 40 minutes outside on a Saturday morning but enjoyed the supplied outside coffee. We thought my husband had gotten the best dish -- the Two Lost Eggs were heavenly! And the Aebelskivers with the jam and lemon curd was wonderful too. Look forward to our next visit!

Great breakfast spot. The wait can be long, but the food is well worth it. One of my favorite restaurants.

We went to the Broder Nord location for Mother's Day and had a great breakfast. We were there before they opened which was nice as we were able to get the first seating with very little wait. The menu was very intriguing with lots of drink choices too. Food was great and presentation outstanding. Would go again as it was difficult to decide.

Thoroughly enjoyed the food at this little place just off Division. I had the Smorebrod, where you choose 3 of the several open-faced sandwiches on offer. The bread from Pearl Bakery was excellent. My favorite was the gravlax (thank you, server, for suggesting it). Shrimp Salad & herring were also delicious. Sauteed greens were a delicious & healthy side. Others in my party had the club sandwich & the salmon cakes. I liked mine better but these were also great. Lots of pickled stuff & horseradish, but I love that stuff. Service was OK - a little slow & a little terse, but helpful when asked. For pete's sake, reprint your menus. They look like they went through the dishwasher.

There is not much Scandinavian about this place other than the menu and place settings from Ikea. We had breakfast. It was on the low end of average, and portions were small with more emphasis on cute than good... very heavy on the butter and cream. The service was really poor. We arrived at 9:30 with 4 people ahead of us in line, and did not get served until 11:15. It was not worth the wait. The blairing techno music nearly drove us nuts, and the persnickety waiter was nearly as irritating. We felt more like we were dining in a gay techno club than a scandinavian cafe. I do not recommend this restaurant.

Fantastic breakfast at Broder. Friendly staff, clean facilities, great food. This place is small and busy. Don't be in hurry to get in and out. Note that there is no place inside to wait. Limited neighborhood parking.

We ate here Mother's Day for brunch..great Swedish food, small tasty portions and variety, quality restaurant, small and quaint, if you have to have to wait coffee served next door...lovely experience..will return again

This was one of the best brunch spots I have been to in Portland. Luckily there wasn't much of a wait when we got there, maybe three people in front of us, when we left there was about 14 people on the list. I loved the space inside. It was decorated perfectly, definitely looked like it could have been a small restaurant located in Scandinavia. The restaurant itself is pretty small inside, I liked the layout where you could actually watch them cook your breakfast. I started off with a Danish Mary (or Bloody Mary) you could have had this with aquavit if you wanted. This was one of the better bloody Mary's I've had, really spicy and delicious. For breakfast I got the Lost Eggs. This was poached eggs in cream and spinach cheese with ham covered with baked Parmesan on top. So good and so filling, definitely did not taste too heavy either. I sampled one of the egg bakes and the breakfast sandwich. Everything was tasty and nothing was left on the plates. Everything on the menu looked tasty it was difficult to make a decision. I would definitely have brunch here again, it was absolutely delicious.

It is worth the wait! Impressive drink menu to compliment the food. I had the pear mimosa and a ginger spiced chai latte. The Danish pancakes are delicious, order more than four. The seasonal fruit fritter hit the spot.

The food was spectacular, and I'm a good cook, so I have discerning tastes. The staff were incredible. I have several food sensitivities, so I'm not an easy customer, and everyone was amazing. They went to a lot of trouble to combine items on the menu into something I could eat. I felt cared for. That's pretty special treatment from a restaurant. We had tried a bakery nearby and they wouldn't make any substitutions for me even to protect me from dangerous allergens. I wish Broder was in Eugene. I'd go there again for sure.

This Scandinavian restaurant has a breakfast menu unlike others you’ll see elsewhere. I had the Danish pancakes with the lemon curd and they were excellent. A Side of apple bacon topped it off.

My daughter took us here for Father's Day. The menu is a two-sided sheet, breakfast or lunch, both served anytime. There was quite a crowd waiting outside when we arrived, but self-service coffee, bistro tables and good conversation helped pass the time. The entire indoor seating scheme is one short row of tables and a few counter stools, so it can take a while. Once seated, however, the service was good. Mostly staffed by eager young people, the place has an active, positive vibe. But the food is the real story. Among our three adult party, we ordered these plates: Swedish Hash with Smoked Trout; found to be excellent. Traditional Swedish Meatballs; very tasty indeed, with a unique spice story. Salmon (sockeye) Fish Cakes; much enjoyed, the dill tarter sauce superb. All portions were deemed fully adequate without being wastefully large. The ethnic touches like pickled red onions and house crispbread make a nice presentation.

This was our first breakfast stop in Portland and we were very happy with the choice. Saturday morning wait was a bit long, but the food was worth it. They provide free coffee outside so you may sip as you wait and enjoy the conversation with your friends. The food was very tasty. We had the salmon omelette with walnut toast. The toast was heavenly - this was both my husband's and my favorite part of the meal. It's that good! He had a skillet with golden brown potatoes, eggs and veggies. Very flavorful and tasty food. Tip: make sure to sign the waiting list sheet outside the cafe to put yourself on the list, otherwise they don't know you want a table!

I went there with my family. There were full of people having lunch already. I guess most of them looked like local people. I ordered some food which was a waiter recommended, and all of them was delicious. Thank you for the waiter's selections!!

I've been to Portland twice in the last year and have been to Broder for breakfast both times. We get there early on Sunday morning and beat the crowds. It's worth getting up early for. I love the baked eggs, just the consistency I like for eggs and the bacon is excellent. I really want to try the Lost Eggs next time. Table mates had the Nord Bord, the Uunipuuro, and the Swedish Hash, all reported very good.

We enjoyed breakfast here recently and knew enough to come before it opened. Though we were the first to arrive, nearly a half hour before opening, when it opened at 9:00 the lineup of people was long. We were seated immediately. We found the decor simple and the inside very clean, including the unisex restroom. We sampled the Danish pancakes with lingonberry jam. They were very good. The coffee was fresh, strong, hot AND served with warmed cream. WOW! I ordered the Swedish breakfast board and found the smoked trout a real standout - flakey, mild, nicely smoked. I have never seen harder working cooks and servers. They opened their doors and immediately there's onslaught of hungry patrons. Be prepared for a wait for the food. Don't linger too long at your table when finished. Next door sits another wave of famished souls!

I lived a block from here on Division for years and started coming here in 2008. Anytime friends were in town I took them here (if it was a small group). I've had almost every dish, and each one was extremely delicious and the Bloody Mary's are a must have! I love that it is small because it creates a more friendly environment. When I moved out of Portland I made it a point to try and visit this place for brunch whenever I can. All the friends I've brought here have had nothing but positive reviews. One bit of advice is that it is best for smaller groups, such as 2 people, and anything more will require a longer wait. It just depends if you are the patient type to wait, but it is definitely worth waiting for ;)

We came for breakfast with friends, who have been here before and insisted that we come 1/2 hour before opening. So we were first in line on a cold, rainy morning. Happily, there is a small coffee shop across the street, so three of us went there for coffee and cocoa while one stalwart friend held our place in line. And a good thing, too - since when we came back to Broder's, the line was already around the corner! The menu is wonderful. My husband ordered the Swedish Hash and said it was outstanding. Our two friends ordered the Swedish Breakfast Bord; one enjoyed it and one said it was o.k. but nothing special. I had the baked egg scramble which was very good. We shared an order of fritters, which were outstanding. The place is tiny and we were jammed in, so conversation was difficult. Our server was fun and we had good, although not timely, service. We waited quite a while for everything, and it was hard to get his attention when we needed more coffee or extra butter. When we left, there was still a line gong around the corner!

Forget Ikea, this is Scandinavian food! Great food and friendly, helpful staff. Beware the coffee refills, they'll have you buzzing for the rest of day!! This is a small bit very popular venue so be prepared to put your name on the waiting list while sitting outside drinking coffee! It's worth the wait though!!

Make sure you get a place in line by adding your name to the book outside the restaurant. Staff will come out when a spot is available and call you in. There's no place inside to wait, at least at the SE Clinton spot, so dress warm if it's cold out. You'll have a 30 to 45 minute wait. You might get lucky and find a parking spot in front of the restaurant so you can wait in the car. There were two spaces pretty much continually open right in front. Guess everyone else found the first available spot as they approached and walked, leaving open spaces for others. We were offered a spot at the counter and were glad we accepted. It was fun to watch the well choreographed cooks prepare meals. Plus we were able to narrow down our choices by checking out the goodies in advance. Our waitress was prompt and the coffee served while we check out the menu was excellent. Based on what we saw being prepared, I ordered the most excellent Danish pancakes. They were round, not flat, cooked first over the stove until firm then finished in the oven. I highly recommend them, the lemon curd and jam were perfect complements. We also ordered the lefse potato crepe special and apple pork sausage which too were most excellent. What wasn't so good was the baked egg scramble, an uninspired and flat tasting dish that even hot sauce couldn't improve. Wish we'd checked prior TA reviews before ordering! We weren't the only ones unimpressed. Lastly, we checked the pastry menu just before we left and wish we'd saved room for the scones, cinnamon rolls, and other goodies. They looked fantastic. So did the lunch menu which will rate another visit. All totaled, we were glad we came and would come again maybe once a month or every two months. The wait was worth it.

We came for breakfast and a couple items including the breakfast skillet and smorgasbord. We started with the small donuts with lemon curd which were hot and delicious. The smorgasbord which included some fish, crackers, cheese and some parsnip soup was fair at best. The egg skillet with spinach my spouse had she didn't care for either. The highlight the donuts with curd, for the price however I will have to pass the next time.

First - we had to wait quite a bit for a table to open up for brunch (almost an hour), but oh boy, was it worth it. The food was fantastic and pretty authentic Swedish in my opinion. The kids loved it too and even the drip coffee was decent. We will definitely be back.

I wasnt sure what to expect but I was pleasantly surprised when the Salmon Cakes I ordered were the best I have ever tasted! My four friends were just as impressed with their food-their meatballs were delicious! The portion sizes did not look very big but don't be fooled-it is more than enough to fill you up! The only thing I didn't like at Broder was the cold beet soup-it looked coolly pink but I sadly couldn't stand the taste. Overall some of the best food I had in Portland!

My wife and I have been going here for Breakfast every Labor Day since Broder opened. I don't know about lunch or dinner but their breakfast is great no matter what you try. You also get professional, friendly, service. Something that can sometimes be lacking in attitude oriented hipster Portland. Despite the line to get in, it is always worth it. Plus, you have a great area to walk around after Breakfast.

I enjoyed having breakfast here. The food was good, the service very quick and friendly and the atmosphere is great. I had their Swedish Hash and was really happy with it. The coffee was very good and strong and not light and watery. All in all it was a good visit and I can recommend this place for anyone who wants a savoury breakfast.

Today was my third visit to Broder. The food, the food is so delicious! The service, the service is so excellent. The ambience, so delightful. Started with the hash and shared the Swedish Pancakes. So fine, so good. This is a must stop foods r breakfast in Portland.

We had a breakfast there - eggs on smoked trout hash. Very tasty. I just wish there was just a little bit more fish in the hash (then it would really stand out). The interior was very nice too.

Oh my goodness... Wish I lived in Portland just to eat at this place more!! When we walked in to this stylish restaurant we were warmly greeted and quickly seated. The menu looked so amazing it was hard to decide what to get!! I finally decided on the fruit fritters which comes with sour cream and syrup. So good!! It also came with two perfectly cooked eggs and applewood sausage link. My husband ordered the smoke salmon skillet with comes with a side and walnut toast. He loved his meal too!! Looking around at the other tables, all the food looked amazing! Thoughtfully prepared and with quality ingredients! The dark chocolate hot chocolate was so tasty and my husband's local stumptown coffee was superb. Go here... You won't regret it!!

My BF stumbled across this restaurant when we were in Portland 2 days ago and I am so happy we did! It was a cold dreary day and while we had to wait outside for about 30 min before we were seated it was well worth it! We sat down at our table and ordered 2 hot drinks. I had the mulled wine and he had some sort of hot boozy espresso both were off the charts! The food was off the chain! I ordered the salmon fish cakes and he had the crepes of the day. After all the tables near us started getting their food and we hadn't the server came over to say that our ticket had accidentally not been placed. To make up for that they sent us over a delicious scone and refilled my mulled wine. The food came out about 10 min later and we devoured it. They finished off my sending us out complimentary pancakes AND taking money off our bill! We understand that sometimes these things but the staff here went above and beyond! The staff, the drinks, the food everything here was A+! If you are ever in Portland this place is a must go!

I have been to Broder for breakfast the last two times I have been in Portland and it is really amazingly good. My wife's family is Swedish and she even loves it! The baked eggs are delicious, with the mustard on the bottom of the skillet underneath the omelet above is one of the best breakfasts I can imagine. I highly recommend the place if you are in the East part of Portland on your trip. Quaint little neighborhood feel to the location as well.

We went to Broder on a Friday morning (a breakfast that starts at 9?). The wait was a good 45 minutes but it was worth it. The wait was in the neighboring Savoy tavern which is closed in the morning and filled with waiting Broder customers drinking coffee. The menu is interesting and unique. That alone is worth the trip. The tiny busy place is packed and noisy in a friendly sort of way. The Scandanavian Christmas decor reminds me of home. Service is good. The food is tasty and stuck with me without being heavy. The baked eggs are prepared perfectly. The smoked trout is tasty. I will be back when I have plenty of time and people to waut with. Breakfast is 9 to12 dollars.I wonder where people wait when the tavern is open?

Love Broder and willing to pay for Uber there and back again. Today I thought the portion on the smørrebrød trio was really too small. I left the place hungry--and that shouldn't be.

I'm a fan of Swedish food and was pretty happy to find Broders. Cute, casual and a nice Menu offering everything from ebelskivers to smoked fish and eggs and fantastic potato pancakes. Service is good, fortunately we ate breakfast there on a weekday and walked right in. The food takes a little while so we passed the time with a small plate of ebelskivers. Decor had a pleasant Swedish vibe, cheerful blue chairs, industrialish shelves and geometric sculptural lighting overhead.

Every time I've eaten here, I have a hard time deciding among many enticing main courses and sides. It's a brunchy place, and the food is flavorful and light (which I like). The dishes are comprised of many small parts, which I also like, so you don't get bored with what you are eating. The new location in Northeast Portland is bigger than the old one, and very attractive in an industrial way--very trendy looking. One time we sat at the private table in the back surrounded on all sides by carved wood, and I could have sat there all day.

This is a gem of a place. We went for breakfast, I had the lost egg and potato pancake and my friend had the smoked trout hash, all three were tasty though the potato pancake was a little greasy. We had a short wait for the table (15 minutes) and the service was quick. The food takes a little while, but they have a small kitchen so they can't pump through the orders like Denny's and the quality is not even comparable... so it was worth the extra time. When in Portland this is a must try, you won't be disappointed.

We arrived by 9am on a Sunday. Had to wait, but only about 15 minutes. Nice touch, they had self serve coffee for us while we waited. It’s a very small restaurant. Our table of four absolutely loved everything we ordered....pancakes, lost eggs, three different hash dishes, and potato pancakes. Even the toast was yummy! This is a must go to restaurant for breakfast!

Fantastic breakfast! Eggs and goat cheese baked in a pan. Swedish rye bread and sweet butter on the side. Plenty of fresh, hot coffee. What a way to start the day! Get there early and grab a table by the open window. Watch hipster Portland waking up.

Who knew that Swedish Breakfast could be this outstanding! This is a top 5 restaurant for Breakfast for my wife and I. The "Lost Eggs" are a favorite of my wifes, I am still trying to find a favorite, every time I try something new, THAT becomes my favorite. The seasonal fritters are fantastic, the Unnipurro (finish oven porridge) is unique and outstanding, the Aebleskiver pancakes are perfect for an appetizer (or main meal), and the Bords are difficult to decide over as they are all fabulous. I have only gone to the SE Clinton restaurant. Service is Phenomenal, the wait staff is some of the best in the city for a small breakfast restaurant. The atmosphere is typical Portland, and worth any wait for a table. EAT HERE!

Stopped by for a late Friday lunch. We took seats at the counter instead of waiting for a table, and it was marvelous watching the cooks at work, rarely speaking, in comfortable tandem. Great variety on the menu with options not typical for a diner menu. The hash with smoked trout and poached eggs was delicious. My fellow diners also enjoyed their choices. I would return at any opportunity.

They don't take reservations, and on a Sunday there is a 40 min wait. I love herring and smoked fish, and so I was attracted. However, the food did not quite come up to my expectations. The dish of "three open-faced sandwiches" contained three sandwiches that were so minute, like 2 by 2 inches! The pickled herring tasted like the kind of dried-up herring that you get in a big jar at Costco, not like the herring I was hoping for, pickled in a barrel whole, with head and everything that one has to clean and cut shortly before putting it on the table. The smoked trout dish was a bit too rich, but the actual trout was a bit too salty. The one side I chose was a potato pancake, and that was good. My friend had a cup of blueberry soup that looked delicious, but I just did not want to order that because my focus was on soup. The tea was excellent. Maybe I would come there again to taste other items on the menu and enjoy the tea, if it were not for such a long wait. The whole place has this cute hipster atmosphere, and I understand why it is so popular. However, for me it was not worth the wait.

In the Clinton neighborhood. We ventured out of downtown for this early morning treat before our return to the four corners of the country. Yelp reviews are justifiably phenomenal and spoke well of Broder’s ability to transform smoked trout and salmon into breakfast bounty. Get the Swedish hash with small cubed potatoes topped with two baked eggs, pickled beets and smoked salmon. I flipped for the baked egg scramble with smoked trout, marbled potatoes and stone ground mustard and dill. If you, like me, enjoy a hot grain breakfast, try their uunipuuro or Finnish oven porridge with jam and steamed cardamom milk. You won’t be sorry.

This place is always busy, for a reason...its great. My only wish is that they had a smaller appetizer size Abelskivers available instead of a $10 full breakfast plate. Sooooo good though. Their Bord's are seasonal and hit the mark every time. The trout dishes are amazing. Basically just go check them out, and them check them out again, and then repeat.

It was so good we had to eat there twice. Everything was excellent. The coffee would have sold me on the place but the food pushed me over the top.

Being of Swedish heritage I wondered how Broder would compare to the Swedish food I grew up with in the Upper Midwest. Well darned if I know, because Broder's menu offers mostly more unique choices. I thought that i could make a comparison by ordering their meatballs, which I found to be very good. But then homemade Swedish meatballs and the meatballs at Ikea are also very good. Each a little different, but all very good. My wife really enjoyed her eggs poached in cream that were served placed on a bed of spinach. So the food is very good and service was excellent. Broder is a small place in a neighborhood so I would imagine that it gets crazy busy at times, but we didn't have to wait since we got there before noon on a Tuesday morning. We drove from Astoria to Broder, and i swear that Waze took us on a "scenic" route that sure included a lot of driving around in neighborhoods. It wasn't difficult to find on street parking .... maybe because Broder is kind of a small place. I should mention that it has a great funky atmosphere that one would hope for in a small neighborhood restaurant.

Only had breakfast, not brunch, but all three of us left happily surprised. Good ingredients: trout hash, herbed potato pancakes, open faced sandwiches with pickled duck eggs and veggies, yummy cheeses. Lingonberry mimosas. Bite sides pastries. The atmosphere is quiet, despite being packed. It’s like the place forces you to be on your good behavior upon entering. Conversations are relaxing and the staff was able to be invisible but there when you wanted something. We never needed them. Highly recommended for a civilized experience of the norm in Scandinavia.

We were visiting our family in Portland, OR from the east coast. We decided to go to the Broder Cafe because we heard so much about it from family friends. Breakfast was amazing so we returned for lunch another day. We had the puffy Swedish Pancakes with lemon curd and ligonberry jam and Swedish Hash (potatoes) with smoked trout topped with two eggs and walnut toast. Both were so amazing! For lunch, I had the trio of open faced sandwiches - choices are egg salad, pickled herring, gravlax, shrimp salad and pickled beets with chevre. It was difficult to choose tree - I wanted them all. My husband chose the Swedish meatballs which were absolutely delicious. For breakfast at around 10AM on a weekday we had to wait about 15 minutes and for lunch we arrive close to 3PM which is closing time so they can prepare fr dinner at 5PM. There was only one other table with patrons so we were very lucky to not have to wait. We were so full we could not eat dinner that evening.

There were no tables available so I sat with my husband and 3 teenagers at the bar. We had a great time watching the unique food prep and lightening speed of the cooks. Very fun family dining experience. Small portions; my teenage sons wanted to stop for a burger on the way home to fill up. but for my husband and me the portions were fine. We all ordered different things and everything was good

We had to wait awhile, but it was Sunday morning, so totally understood (no reservation(s)). Parking was not an issue. Cozy seating inside the restaurant, but the food was so worth the wait, absolutely incredible!

Quality breakfast and lunch specializing in scandinavian food. Danish Pancakes and Swedish Meatballs are not to be missed. Excellent service, too

What really sets this place apart is its authentic Scandinavian menu. Apple fritters for breakfast! A million times better than pancakes. Plenty of other choices but only had one opportunity to go there. Great service and coffee. The staff warned us to get there before 9.00 if we did not want a long wait.

Excellent food and cocktails. Service is personal and top-notch. Don't miss the Danish pancakes. Excellent reputation is well-deserved.

Came here recently with my wife, for a stunning breakfast. Well cooked, great flavors and cracking service. It's a busy little place, and we waited for 30 mins on a Saturday morning. I'd recommend getting here early to avoid disappointment. I'll go back. For sure.

Three of us had lunch here and the menus was so interesting and different we ordered six things on the menu, and the menu is small! Every one of the dishes was delicious, except the pastry plate, a selection of various muffins and cookies. This was a real disappointment. Everything else was really good, different than all the other restaurants. We sat in the back booths which are designed like huts and are really unique. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for something interesting, deli joys and different.

We had a great brunch at Broder this morning. There was a little bit of a wait for a table when we arrived at 11, but it was worth it! The coffee was delicious and was refilled regularly by two very helpful waiters. My husband loved the smoked trout hash and I enjoyed the pickled herring on bread. The next time that we go, I will definitely try either the waffles or other pastries. I would recommend for anyone wanting a nice, relaxing breakfast or lunch at a very cute location. I would not recommend taking children there.

We're locals. After hearing about Broder from many friends, we tried it out for Sunday breakfast with mixed and disappointing results. First, the food. Five stars all around! So many options, but everything we had was wonderful, from the coffee to the entrees, including the apple fritters and the lost eggs. We were already planning to come back again to try other options. Sorry, not going to happen now. Service was decidedly spotty and at one point, rude. Granted, the place is busy, yet we were nicely greeted, shown to a waiting area, and offered coffee and water by a most friendly chap. We patiently waited about 30 minutes for a table, were then seated, not knowing that decent service was over. Orders were taken and our breakfast served - so far so good. Then the bill was left before we had finished eating (we paid promptly), and we finished eating. Our plates were quickly cleared. At this point, our waiter told us that we would need to leave because they needed the table. Huh? I have NEVER had this happen. Yes, we had been finished for a few minutes, and yes, there were people waiting, just as we had and had expected to do. All gemuetlichkeit had vanished. Hence the average rating - 5 for food, 1 for service. Won't be back; doubt anyone cares, since they will do fine without my business.

I had the Swedish breakfast platter: rye crisp, salami, gravlax, grapefruit, yogurt & berries, cheese. Very tasty.

Breakfast seems like a religion in Portland, and we had a hard time narrowing down our choices. Fortunately for us, Broder was one of the few places open on July 4. Had to take a $20 cab ride from our hotel in downtown Portland. No public transportation. Restaurant is in a cute little neighborhood. We got their early, before they were opened and while they were setting up. By the time they did open, there was a line (natch). Chose to sit outside. Service was friendly and we didn't feel rushed. Loved our meal here! I got a baked egg skillet with smoked salmon, cheese and scallion. It came with delicious bread and even more delicious apple fritter. My husband wanted to try it all - and so he ordered the "Swedish breakfast bord" which came with bread, meats, cheeses, trout, fruit, yogurt, and even a little chocolate cake - just enough to satisfy your sweet tooth. Definitely worth the trip to the "other side" of the river!

We were surprised at the line on a Monday morning, but the wait (~40 minutes) was worth it. If you want to enjoy coffee outside while you wait it'll run you $3 and it's pretty generic, not on par with the rest of the menu. We stuck to breakfast food even though the wait took us closer to lunch. I had a delicious special egg scramble with arugula, farmer cheese, and bacon and a side salad. My boyfriend loved his trout hash. If you are feeling adventurous try a bloody mary with Swedish liquor, it's definitely different - we recommend skipping the straw and sipping through the salt rim. The two small ceiling fans cant compete with the oven, it was ~75 degrees outside and felt like a relief. The line for the w.c. occasionally got long, so dont wait until the last minute or you may end up dancing in line.

Coffee and adult beverages available while you wait. Packed brunch spot, but the wait wasn't long. Unique breakfast...they even had a breakfast charcuterie board of sorts, and it was amazing! We're contemplating moving to Portland, and if the food scene looks anything like this restaurant, it's definitely making it an easy decision for us.

Went as a single on a September Tuesday early afternoon. Short wait, then given choice of counter or table. Chose table since counter seemed much too warm (near the searing cooktops), but still uncomfortably warm inside. Waiter friendly and informative. Chose the trio of open-faced sandwiches with gravlax, smoked trout, and shrimp options. Plated, it looked small, but packed with flavor. Plus a filling pea salad on side. Liked the sugar cubes included with coffee, very authentic. Finally, I will definitely visit again...on a cooler day.

Went during the weekday for lunch, and had to wait about twenty minutes, which was fine. It's a narrow restaurant, though, so many table are lined up right next to one another. I tend to like more space between our table and the ones around us. Some guy stood over us chatting with friends, rendering conversation impossible for a while, so go with that in mind. Not a place to go if you have problems hearing. The food ain't cheap, but it was tasty, and the presentation was excellent. Beautiful! Could be a bit more vegetarian friendly ... but I get the idea they want to be authentic to the cuisine. Service was no nonsense and efficient.

Really enjoyed our breakfast on Broder. The baked eggs with walnut bread toast were perfectly done and the coffee was strong and hot, the way we love it. Waits for tables are a regular thing but so is the case at all good breakfast spots. Larger groups would be quite challenging so perhaps breaking up into 2's and 4's would be most efficient. The ebelskivers are a sweet treat for the table to share. (Kind of like a puffy pancake popover.)

The small neighborhood restaurant in Portland makes a Swedish style breakfast. We stopped in early on Sunday. I had the Apple Fritters and my friend opted for the Swedish Breakfast. EVERYTHING WAS GREAT! This was a real treat to eat a Swedish Breakfast and the quality of the food was excellent. HIGHLY RECOMMEND YOU GO EARLY ON SUNDAY BEFORE THE WAIT GETS TOO LONG!

AMAZING BRUNCH. Well worth the wait. We will definitely be back next time we are in the Portland area!

This place is small but has lotsof charm. My wife and I both had the Swedish hash; it was very tasty and filling. The service was excellent. Broder has to be one of the best and most interesting places to have breakfast in Portland.

We arrived on a Sunday morning about five minutes after they opened (9:05). The tables are definitely packed in pretty close. We brought three children with us and we never felt like we were rushed or our children were unwelcome. The place did fill up quickly and it was obvious people were waiting next door. As someone mentioned, they do turn up the music pretty loud once the place is filled, but it didn't bother us. Our children ordered the Danish Pancakes and we ordered the Breakfast Bord and an Apple fritter (several pancakes packed with apples) with 2 eggs and sausage. Of these, we were most impressed with the apple fritter. I also ordered the Spanish coffee. Wow, I had no idea! It's essentially a mixed drink with several different types of liqueur, some cognac, coffee, and some other ingredients--and then lit on fire before applying whip cream. No complaints here. The portions are modest and in all honesty, I should have just ordered three of the crown pastries and a coffee drink. All of us were in awe of the crown, which we ordered as an appetizer to hold us over...buttery, warm, fluffy, sweet and perfect. The Breakfast Bord was OK, but wanting. Several small pieces of smoked trout, a small piece of cheese, some peas with diced cheese in a small bowl, some exceptional yogurt, hard tack and small wedges of walnut bread, and a very small slice from a pastry. My wife's apple fritter with eggs was yummy, but also on the modest side. We liked the fact that neither of our meals were unduly loaded down with sugar or sauces. This was also the case with the danish pancakes. They're round, muffin-like pastries and draw their flavor mainly from the accompanying sauces--lemon curd, applesauce, etc. Our kids prefer Swedish pancakes over these. My main question: Where else are you going to find good Scandinavian food in Oregon? And the food it good. We have some more meals to try when we visit next, but I'll definitely double down on the crown and lay low on the Spanish coffee--even though I would love this as an apres-dinner drink. Excellent service..super nice and very attentive--great job!

I get tired of the same old breakfast and this was a treat! I did not have the scones yet are told they are terrific. the smoked trout hash was great. I will go back again for a lamb burger for lunch!

Top notch. Sit inside and watch the kitchen rock out to 80's classics. Really, 2 guys putting food out like clockwork, it's a wonder to watch. Food is great. Staff is wonderful. You won't hate yourself for doing this.

when i walked in, i was told that the wait is so long, they were no longer taking names. it was a cloudy day and had been drizzly earlier, hence the outdoor tables were free. i suggested outdoor seating and i was told if it rained, i would not get a seating indoors. i decided to brave it and yes, it was worth it!' i had the swedish potato pancakes sandwiched with ham, carmelised onion, pickles, gouda and mustard with two perfectly cooked sunny side up eggs. the pancakes turned out to be surprisingly light and thin when i was expecting a heavy, doughy consistency. i loved it! but espresso, oh espresso, it was supposed to be stump town coffee, highly regarded around here failed miserably. portlanders, you need to come to melbourne to learn how to make proper espresso. or go to powell's cafe and do taste what real espresso is like when it is made properly.

This was my second visit to the Swedish Broder Cafe . . both with my daughter . . now she has two boys 3 years old and 8 weeks old . . I have recently moved to Portland to watch the boys while the parents work . . my mother is Swedish and we always make our own sausage for the holidays . . what a wonderful treat to share a marvelous meal of tasty Swedish breakfast . . all 4 of us went at noon last Tuesday . . the waiter was tremendously accommodating . . the 3 yo loved his Danish doughnuts with maple syrup while I gobbled down his lingdonberry jam on my toast . . I swam in my hash and egg dish with smoked salmon and capers topped with pickled beets . . my daughter loved her salmon cakes with pickled beets onions and cukes . . her first dining excursion since the second boy was born . . I must again mention how wonderful our waiter worked with our needs and helped make this dining adventure exquisite . . we will be back again soon . .

We had a delicious breakfast with friends. Space is a premium at Broders, so we were packed in there. It was ridiculously warm inside, and we basically hurried to finish our meal in order to get outside to cool down. Service was good, and it was reasonably priced. We'll go back, but in winter where the warmth makes sense :)

This is an experience best suited for a nightmare. Screamingly loud music with seemingly deaf waiters on a Sunday morning. With fewer than a dozen tables, it took far too long to take the order, fill the order and follow up with more coffee and water. I have to assume that the staff was serving a community service sentence since their contempt for the customers was blatant ... from the music suited for torturing terrorists to the food that any college student could have made in a hot pot.

This was my second visit to Broder, and it was a delight! The hardest part was deciding (sweet or savory? we went with both!). I am a fan of Broder and will return as often as possible, although I wish they would open an outpost in Seattle (Ballard, anyone?).

Certainly one of best brunches I've had. Everything was superb including the table service. Please please do yourself a favor and get one (or more) pastries. The host is a bit of a condescending jerk, but perhaps he is entitled given the long wait. Come earlier or later.

We were pretty excited after Christmas to go to Broder, since its usually extremely crowded with tourists. We live in the area and remembered how good it was. Upon entry the person whom greeted us seemed kinda rude, directing us to go outside to sign up on the waitlist and wait in the cold. I mean, I get it that there's a wait list but no need to be smug about it cause we didn't realize it upon entry. No food is worth waiting in the cold for when there are so many good options around.

This is a place to try new things (unless you are Danish). My wife and I had never had any of the breakfast items before, but the wonderful aromas tempted us into trying the PYTT I PANNA (SWEDISH HASH) and the FÖRLORADE ÄGG (LOST EGGS). Farm-fresh ingredients, expertly prepared and presented -- we both remarked that the seasoning and flavors were so good that we never thought once about asking for salt and hot sauce (which we always do with American breakfasts). You will wait for a table, but it is well worth it!

We went here for brunch and it did not disappoint on several levels. 1. The atmosphere was a cool small cafe with a couple tables outside, but the windows at the front opened to let fresh air in. 2. There is a such a nice range of dishes on the menu from savory to sweet, from somewhat familiar to items we'd never tried before. There is truly something for every appetite. 3. Service was fantastic. Not all over you, but definitely accommodating. 4. The food! I had the smoked trout Swedish hash and it was amazing. Great flavor and way more than I could finish. My husband tried the seasonal fritters. They were raspberry and so yummy! This was a unique, local experience in Portland that we would do again and again!

Just a really excellent experience, from the taking of the order to the plating of the food, and to the smacking of the lips and licking of the fork/spoon/knife/fingers at the end of the meal. We had the Swedish pancakes (fluffy little balls of goodness with lemon curd and lingonberries to put on top) and the Swedish "hash" breakfast. Let me tell you this is nothing (thankfully) like corned beef hash (which I had feared). Tiny little cubes of perfectly cooked potatoes, celery, bell peppers, etc., with pieces of smoked trout mixed in under two feathery/perfectly cooked sunny-side up eggs served in a cute little cast iron pan. Just perfect...everything cooked to perfection, tender, not mushy, trout added a wonderful smoky flavor, eggs were as I said, perfect, tender and silky, with soft yolks, but whites cooked perfectly. Yummy coffee served with small carafes of steamed milk. Service was attentive and friendly. Unfortunately we didn't find this gem until our last day or we would have been back the next day for lunch, and maybe the day after to try another item on the menu for breakfast. Go now, go often.

It was worth the 40 minute wait to eat at Broder when I last visited Portland. The cuisine is totally off-the-beaten-path and not food you'll find in most brunch/lunch restaurants in the U.S. (except perhaps in Minnesota, where Scandinavia is very much alive and well), and the ambience is unmistakably Portlandesque. Well-priced, to boot, and super friendly service.

I’ve pretty much been everywhere for breakfast in Portland and I love me some Broder. I like Clinton street the best for atmosphere and it’s the original. Service can be hipster and spotty. The food is still the main draw. I love the cast iron cooking. The baked eggs, ableskivers, potato pancakes are legit. Expect a wait and plan to nurse a coffee for a little while for your wait. It’s worth it.

Broder is for those with time. Skip it otherwise. After a half-hour wait, we were seated in the center’s multipurpose room extension of the restaurant section of the building. The Scandinavian cultural displays, shop, etc in the building with Broder make the wait for first-timers worthwhile. Once seated, the service was typical for the region. The coffee was better than most. The menu is both what draws customers & differentiates Broder from other area breakfast/brunch establishments. Preparation & presentation were mostly on par with other, similarly priced options with servings noticeably smaller though. All told, Broder is a lovely place to go have an acceptable & not too pricey meal and linger in conversation. The latter point seemed to us to be the biggest draw: the long waits seemed to be because everyone lingers. There was no discernible pressure to turn tables or clientele over at any pace but their own. Ultimately, with so many other choices in the area, we’re not sure if we’ll return but were glad to have finally made the time to check Broder out.

If I could eat here every day, I would. The service is impeccable: frequent check-ins and recommendations; friendliness etc. No sooner had I finished pouring out the last of the water on the table into my cup when it was immediately replaced by a new bottle of water -- stuff like that. The food is amazing: I wish I could try every dish, but what I did try was absolutely delicious. Even the prices are good for what you're getting: it tastes gourmet but ends up being around the price of a Perkins entrée. It's quaint and the tables are close together, but everything about it is impeccable! Highly recommend!

This little nook off a side street south of Division is really a find--exquisite craftsmanship in the dishes in a slightly informal and net-bohemian cafe/restaurant that exudes an attitude of client care and attention to detail in ingredients, taste, presentation, and customer satisfaction. Our group of four opted for the breakfast egg scramble, soup and salad, swedish meatballs, and the lamb burger. Sides of potato pancakes and smoked bacon rounded out our shared feast. Service was spiffy, prompt and attentive. Waitresses were on top of every dish; libation of beers and a few distinct Swedish spirits (the aquavit echoes tickled our taste buds more than once) were welcome. The food service was prompt, accurate, and everything we could have hoped for. The dining room is tight but not cramped, and the badinage and repartee amongst the seasoned regulars never overpowers close and intimate conversation, which is a high point for me. Desserts seemed decadent after what we had for main courses, but the locals around us seemed to have no problem tucking away an array of tiny plates of sweets--but I could not figure out what they were. In any event, I really can't speak too highly of the decorum, care and attention, explosive flavors, and the comfort of this dining room. Just go and write your own review--and take along a group of friends with whom you wish to spend a couple of hours of precious time.

Broder's has a problem. But it's not the food, which is unique, exquisitely-prepared, amazingly-tasty, and very well priced. Broder's problem is that it's way, way too popular for its size, and simply has not learned to scale up its operations. We've been there twice, both times waiting in the bar next door for 45 minutes, where Broder's luckily has an arrangement allowing patrons to relax and order drinks ahead of the meal. But a long wait before being seated is par for the course at brunch in Portland. The problem is what happens when you sit down. Broder's makes its food in shifts, preparing about 8 meals at a time, due to the small kitchen and staff. There are about 12 tables, and that means this is a very small operation. Once you sit down, you're very likely to face a long wait for food, and if you're particularly unlucky (like we were), you miss the 8-person cutoff and will be served in the next round. We waited 30 minutes after ordering before our food was served, and this was after waiting 45 minutes next door. It wasn't even prime time - this was a cloudy Saturday afternoon, and we arrived at 1:30pm. Note that the Pytt i Panna, which is their signature dish, is good, but the Solstice (and likely the similar Swedish Breakfast) is much better. More food, more variety, and less grease. It's really incredible - a shame about the long wait to get it!

We are traveling and back in Portland. We went to Broder on our last visit and couldn't wait to return. They didn't disappoint. Food and service were excellent. A must visit for anyone looking for a place to have breakfast or brunch.

I went here with some old Army Buddies. I make Ebelskivers myself, so it was good to talk with them about how they make theirs. I had the soup special, which was very good. The coffee was also very good as well. I'll go back when I am in town. Traditional European food is always hard to find in Oregon.

We had to wait as a party of 7. Danish pancakes were unusual. Scrambled eggs with gravadlax were disappointing, not much salmon, but lost eggs were good. Service is very slow but nice atmosphere.

We arrived at around 9:30 and waited for around an hour to get a table. One of my friends asked him for an estimated time, and his reply was "I can't make people leave." Very poor service on his part. The host was incredibly unhelpful and if we hadn't said anything, he would have not remembered that we were still waiting. He nearly skipped over us when a table of four became open. However, the restaurant leaves tea and coffee outside for people to wait. Inside, the service was much better. Our server was fast and helpful. I ordered a Lefse (Norwegian potato crepe) and it was fantastic. Loved the contrast between the buttery crepes and the pickles and mustard. I also tried my friend's brisket hash, trout hash and lost eggs. They're very hearty and a great value. All in all, I would advise you to go early. Seating larger parties (4+) may be quite difficult. But I would definitely recommend if you're looking for something a little different or if you love Scandinavian foods.

My brother and I went to Broder. The tiny little restaurant was jam packed early Friday morning. We had to wait a few minutes for a table to clear. Once seated I ordered the Lefse and a side of bacon and my brother ordered the baked egg scramble. The Lefse was like a potato crepe with lox and scallions. It tasted great and the bacon was good also. The coffee was good and the portions are just right. The inside of the restaurant is very relaxing and cool. The only thing that was funny was how cramped it is inside so you hear other peoples conversations. This one lady was complaining about how she paid for her ex boyfriends education and once he graduated and got a high paying job he dumped her for a younger woman. All I can say is we need more women like her, but I said it to myself. I highly recommend Broder for breakfast. I imagine the lunch and dinner is excellent as well.

This delicious little restaurant is in a quaint neighborhood in SE Portland. We wanted to try everything on the menu, but I knew I had to try the Lefse (Norwegian potato crepes), a Scandinavian specialty. This dish was amazing, square thin crepes with layers in between of arugula pesto, bacon, horseradish and a perfectly cooked egg on top. My daughter had the baked egg scramble with a side of sautéed greens which were only lightly sautéed so still crisp and coated with a delicious tart-vinegar sauce. So many other items on the menu looked good, we will definitely return the next time we visit Portland.

A girls weekend in Portland, looking for somewhere new (to us anyway) for a Sunday morning breakfast. We had Broder recommended to us. We arrived at about 9:45 in the morning to a completely packed restaurant. We signed in immediately and settled in for a wait. The restaurant is very small, but it was a nice, summer morning so they were utilizing two outdoor picnic tables. An hour later we were still waiting! I would ordinarily never wait that long for breakfast, but at that point we had already committed so much time, we continued to wait. Eventually, we were seated. The food was delicious, and the prices were reasonable. Our party ordered everything from the scramble, to the meat board, to the open face sandwich. All were very, very good. Would I wait for over an hour to eat there again, probably not. I would absolutely recommend it, and would go again if the servers figure out how to turn their tables faster, or they develop a better reservation system.

We had breakfast at Broder. A gem of an ethnic restaurant on Clinton in SE Portland. Come early if you don't want to wait for a table! The coffee was hot and delicious. The challenge is to decide what to order. I had the Broder Bord which gives you several items. Everything was delicious and clearly house made. You can't go wrong with the choices. If you want to venture away from bacon and eggs, this would be an excellent choice for a "Swede" breakfast.

Perhaps it's what I ordered, but I didn't think my visit to Broder was memorable. I ordered baked eggs, which is just a thin frittata with not a great deal of flavor, served in a very small, flat skillet. The potato pancake was delicious. Others in our party faired better: One ordered the breakfast sandwich which was rich and delicious and the other ordered "Lost Eggs", also very good. Tiny dishes of jam were served with the small round doughnut-like pastries, which were not as interesting as they looked. The breakfast board was very good and would have been an interesting choice as the main dish, but we divided it among 5 people. Not enough. Our table was too small for all the plates, which made dining a challenge shifting plates here and there to make room. When we signed the waiting list at 9:30 on Sunday, we thought the wait would be moderate to long, but it turned into interminable. We waiting about an hour and 15 minutes for our table.

We've traveled extensively in Norway, Sweden and Denmark and have always enjoyed the breakfast. Broder is probably the closest we've come to the same experience in the US. As the name implies, the breads here are hearty old world recipes and a pleasure to eat. If you enjoy the Scandinavian emphasis on fish for breakfast take advantage of it here. Note that the potato pancakes are donut-hole-sweets, not a pancake in the American sense, and for most people do not qualify as a meal. Broder was packed when we visited the day after Thanksgiving, and we were given to understand that while they are undergoing renovation this is to be expected. Be sure to get there early and be prepared to wait, but the wait was worth it.

We were visiting but were with a Portlander who knew about the long wait for breakfast so arrived early. We stood in line a bit for it to open but were seated right away. However, it still took awhile for our food to arrive. The small, round Danish pancakes (there is a good photo already posted with the authentic name) were fabulous and my husband really enjoyed the baked eggs--everything was worth the wait! One of our favorite dining experiences in Portland.

By FAR the best breakfast i have had in portland this year. The dutch crown with lemon curd and lingonberry is perhaps the most amazing "pastry" i have ever had. The smoked trout hash was perfect. The beautiful look of the food, smart plating, and friendly staff take the delish food over the top. I want to eat here every day! A+ bloody mary too!

The food, service, and atmosphere are spectacular. Free coffee while waiting is the best. And even the iced tea was to die for.

Love this breakfast spot. You know place is great when there's an hour and a half wait every day. The bar next-door is part of the restaurant where you can have mimosas and a muffin while you wait. Food is excellent and all locally sourced. They do not use any hydrogenated oils to cook with. Presentation is great most dishes come in the small iron skillet they were cooked in. I tried the smoked trout and eggs which was so unbelievable. And all my friends loved their meals as well. Although I can't remember which dishes they got. This will be my first stop every time I come to Portland.

We waited 1.5 hrs for a table for two, while many tables were cleaned and sat empty. Our server got our order wrong 2xs. And he never checked in until we were ready to go. I was served hot tea in a dirty cup and I had to flag down the dishwasher to get a fresh clean cup. The food was good, but not remarkable or amazing. We told the server kindly and clearly about the service problems. Then he told us, “Do him a favor and never come back.” We were forced to pay an 18% tip. When I wrote down our issues on the receipt and took it to another server so at least someone would know about this servers behavior, she removed the 18% tip. But no offers to deal with or correct the two order issues or his lack of appropriate service or his edict to us. We are two people in our 70s who waited 1.5 hours without complaint for good food but terrible service

While in town for the weekend, we stopped at Broder for breakfast on a Sunday. They have a sweet deal with the venue next door that you can put your name on the list at the door and take a seat with some great Stumptown coffe until your name is called. The place filled up quickly and our wait was still 45 minutes. Once seated the waiter was nice enough to explain everything we wanted and even let me sample the elderflower and champagne. It was so good that not only did I order it with my meal but I bought a botte of elderflower liquor when I returned home. One friend got a bloody mary and my sip tasted delicious, perfectly spicy. The food, while pricey, was good having not tasted much Swedish food. I ordered the Vegetarian Pyttipanna which, while I wouldn't get it again so I could try something else, was good. One friend got a baked scramble, which looked delicious, although she said her potato pancake was a bit mushy. The other friend had the swedish meatballs, which were really swimming in cream (take that as good or bad depending on what you like). Street parking was tricky and we were lucky to grab a spot out front.

Very cool Scandinavian restaurant. A neighborhood favorite where the locals gather. Get the lamb burger. You won't be disappointed they have lefse.

I walked in the doors alone at 8am as they opened after a night of immoderation. I was greeted by a smiling waitress and chef and staring at a beautifully bubbling skillet full of "lost eggs" soon afterwards. Delicious ingredients without much grease or cream; was a perfect start to a day of traveling. Highly recommended.

On a weekend morning you may have to wait a bit outside Broder's (NOT so likely at the new Broder's; I'm talking about the one on Clinton St.), but it's worth it and they put out a pot of good coffee. It's a small place, and we like to sit at the bar watching the cooks, who work very hard over a hot stove. They use a lot of cast-iron utensils for their dishes, starting them on the stove and finishing them in the oven. Their Scandinavian hash, baked eggs, potato pancakes, puffy skivers - whatever you like, it will be tasty and hot.

(This review is of the Nord location.) We generally don't like to wait to be seated in restaurants. But it was a rainy day in Portland (surprise, surprise), so we chose to stay rather than go out looking for someplace else. Boy, are we glad we did! The host was friendly, patient, and efficient. He brought us drinks from the bar while we waited. The room was interesting to look around, and the people watching was fun. But the real show started once we were seated. We've never had food like this! Hard to describe. I had Lefse (Norwegian potato crepes filled with ham, goat cheese, baked eggs, watercress, fennel), and my wife had the Swedish Hash (potatoes cooked with peppers and onions, baked eggs, pickled beets, smoked trout). They were both wonderful! Because of our long wait, our server brought us an order of Danish pancakes (hot, caky balls sprinkled with powdered sugar and sent right from Heaven). We each had a drink (one white peach bellini, one Horatio, pictured) that were each outstanding. (Many of the drinks use genever, a Dutch gin.) The service was cheerful and impeccable. I could go on. Instead, I will reduce this review of Broder to two words: GO THERE!

Brilliant Scandinavian start to the day. Had the salmon hash. Recommend it along with the Donuts. Yummy!

My friends and I ventured here for brunch on a Sunday. The wait was an hour and a half, but you were able to sit in the pub next door and have coffee or order drinks while waiting. Everywhere else of course had long waits so we decided to stay. I am so glad we did. My friend got the Danish pancakes (aebleskiver) and enjoyed them. My other friend got the pytt I panna (Swedish hash) w/ trout and loved it. I got the forlorade agg (lost eggs) which were excellent. The restaurant is very small & cozy. The prices were very reasonable. This is a terrific place to enjoy a hearty breakfast or brunch.

Birthday brunch with my sister---so tasty and the coffee, just the way a good Norwegian likes it! Strong. the baked egg scrambles were delicious but I had to make a choice between that and the aebilskivers. it was hard---protein won out. Had to get there before opening and stand in line.

Broder had one of the best breakfasts I've had in a long time. Do not hesitate to sit at the bar, it's comfy, and personally, I find it relaxing to watch chefs at work. The restaurant has a bustling business on weekend morning well into the early afternoon/brunch time. So this results in a lengthy wait, but I promise you, it is WORTH the wait. Watch out though; if you're doing breakfast on a tight budget, the coffee carafes they have are not offering "free" coffee. Overall, it's traditional european breakfast fare. We had the Baked eggs, I think it had tomatoes, danish gouda, ham and maybe spinach, I can't remember...but OH WOW. This was so freaking good. Had a side of bacon, too. Delish! Crispy and perfect. The service is rapid and solidly good quality. And although the restaurant is a tight fit, it's bustling, chipper, and kind of restful.

Small place, but we enjoyed sitting at the bar and watching them work. Drinks were good, food was even better.

We went for breakfast at about 9:30 on a Wednesday and were seated inside immediately. There were tables available on the sidewalk also. My spouse had the baked eggs with toast and lingonberry jam, I had the "Swedish" met hash with two baked eggs on top. She enjoyed her breakfast and I loved mine. Now that we have finally discovered Broder, it is on our list of places to enjoy again - I especially look forward to trying the Danish smoorebrod open face sandwiches.

Swedish food Bad parking very difficult to find a spot Polite staff and both outside and inside dining. Both breakfast and lunch menu The swedish hotdogs were wrapped in a tortilla and had shrimp and potatoes with pickled vegetables and salad were delicious in different ways. Swedish pancakes and vegetarian hash are good

Cramped seating? Check. Efficient but too-busy-to-be-chatty wait staff? Check. No air circulation at the back tables? Check. But the food. Aaah, the food. The most delicious and atypical breakfast in Portland. Worth the inevitable wait.

If you don't mind waiting in line for breakfast, or eating late in the morning (the place does not open till 9:00), this is an excellent choice for everyone. Lots of delicious heavy carb choices for those not watching that kind of thing, and yummy selections for those who are.

Bellinnis, mimosas, coffee beverages oh my! Scandinavian inspired menu. Had the "lost eggs" and it was amazing. Friendly staff, cool and quiet neighborhood. Go early cause it fills up quick. Support these guys. They're doing good things.

I always thought Scandinavian food was a bunch of small fish, stuffed into the carcass of a shark and left on the frozen Swedish coast for three months. This, however, was definitely not that. The lost eggs are amazing, as is their take on the bloody mary with aquavit. If I could eat this for breakfast every day, I would. Bravo.

Been here twice on visits to Portland. The Scandanavian oriented menu is superbly executed and the lingonberry jam and ableskivers are to die for. Everything good. Small and cozy. The perfect jewel of a brunch place..always a long line with no reservations so make sure you are ready to visit over coffee in their waiting area (very comfortable) next door. Super cute decor as well. We LOVE Broder.

Fabulous place for brunch! We had the aebleskivers for a special treat -a taste of Scandinavia-served with lemon curd and lingonberry sauce. The Farmer's Breakfast Sandwich was an amazing blend of flavors. On a Saturday morning, we had to wait for a table, but spent the time in the adjoining place next door where we ordered coffee, juice, and pastries which made for a delicious way to spend the waiting time. Friendly and attentive service. I highly recommend this unique restaurant. Can't wait for a return visit!

I had something involving eggs with smoked trout and it was absolutely amazing. Really well balanced ingredients which were very well cooked. Lovely little bits of fried potato and beetroot were involved as well. Would highly recommend stopping here for breakfast.

Our Danish guest was impressed with the smørrebrød and the rest of us (3 adults and one child) were more than pleased with our dishes. The dining room was warm. Like most other Portland venues, the cafe does not have air conditioning. The dining area was noisy and conversation was a bit difficult. One of our guests is already planning a return visit with another friend.

Cozy and quaint, casual and attentive service. I scarfed down a perfectly cooked lamb burger and sipped on a Sazerac with a hint of Aquavit (a anise, cardamom like liquor). I jabs been here for brunch. as well and it's killer. Check this spot out it's just the right amount of different.

I had another enjoyable meal at Broder when I was in PDX a few weeks ago. I was alone, so I sat at the counter (no wait--yay!) and chatted with the chef. Making æbleskiver is a skill--and he produces 100s of them in any given week. I had Pytt i Panna (Swedish hash) and it was tasty and the eggs were cooked perfectly. The food barrels out of the kitchen and everyone in the small restaurant--which became packed quickly--seemed to be having a good time.

We waited nearly an hour to get a table at this tiny restaurant for Brunch on Father's Day, but the wait was pleasant because there were picnic tables outside where we could sit, watch the passersby and sip the absolutely fantastic Aquavit Danish Marys. When we were finally seated the service was quick and efficient. We sampled the Swedish Hash, hidden eggs, and ableskiver. Delicious. (Although I prefer by ableskiver recipe because mine are lighter and less caky!) I really liked the warmed cream that came with our coffee.

Everything is freshly prepared at this Finnish restaurant. Baked eggs served piping hot, with several choices, mine was bacon. Cranberry scone was equally excellent. After my wife's class, might go back for lunch! This was our first visit.

Since I am a vegan, Broder was most gracious to help me with my dietary needs. My friends had some great looking baked eggs. I did splurge on a deep fried pancake balls. They were exquisite. I had the most delicious greens with some great toast. I didn't feel left out when my friends were having eggs, bacon, pancakes, etc. It's a very popular place because people wait outside on Sundays to get a table. Seating is very limited but well worth the wait.

We like to try different restaurants in Portland for brunch and this one stands out. Their offerings are unique, creative and delicious! I don't remember some of the names of the dishes but I had the apple fritter with sausage and egg and it was divine. My husband ordered a potato pancake with "bacon syrup" and strawberry cream. It may sound odd but the combination of savory and sweet is something we, as a family, crave for! Who can have a pancake without bacon or sausage, for example? The restaurant is also very creatively decorated. The light fixture on the ceiling is super cool and it just feels like a comfortable and hip place to be in. I'd love to go for dinner soon!!

Having heard about extremely long lines, we chose to try Broder for a late lunch, around 12:45 on a weekday, and we waited only about 15 minutes. I had the Swedish meatballs, and my husband had the trio of sandwiches with tomato soup. I really enjoyed the meatballs, and thought they had a very genuine Swedish flavor - subtle seasonings, and a bit of vinegar flavor. Husband thought the sandwiches, (he chose mostly fish and seafood,) were good, but not great. All dishes come with a small bowl of pickled mixed vegetables. Overall, I thought Broder was a good choice for a reasonably priced meal. We spend a little under $50 for lunches and wine for two.

A cute little, stress little, neighborhood Swedish style restaurant. Had a bit of a wait, but not bad. Tables are very close together, so there isn't much in the way of privacy. Food had good taste and presentation.

This charming and always full restaurant features Swedish menu items and they're done impeccably! I've eaten here several times and have never been disappointed (except when the line was so long that I had to eat somewhere else!!). Exceptional service and even better food. A sure bet for breakfast or brunch - just make sure you get there early enough!!

Broader is a little cafe that serves delicious Scandinavian style food. Their brunch is to die for. Service is fast and friendly!

Stumbled upon this comfy neighborhood type place for breakfast. Fabulous food and service. We would definitely want to eat at the counter again and watch the masterful cook preparing everyone's food right in front of us. Great menu, creative, affordable. Would love to visit there again next time in Portland.

Interesting experience, worth a shot. I could go again for sure.

Amazing breakfast! Simple and clean hip Portland little cafe with a friendly and happy staff. My friend started with a cup of coffee which he says was well made. We ordered the Forlorde Agg (Lost Egg), Ableskiver (Danish pancakes), Lefse (Norwegian potato pancake). Everything was incredible! The Lost Eggs are a signature dish. It’s rich and heavy, and may be best eaten last. The Danish pancakes were fluffy and warm inside, complimented by your choice of jam or custard, you can’t go wrong with either. The Norwegian potato pancakes were savory delicious. Deceptively filling breakfast. Small tables so best if pair or max 4 people at a time.

We came here for brunch on Mother’s Day and were greeted with amazing service and a delicious brunch. It is a small restaurant so there was a wait but the friendly staff made the time fly.

This place is also called Cafe Broder. It's a small place with seating outside. Be prepared to sign in for a table. Today we waited about 15 minutes, but 45 minutes is not unusual. But it is worth it. I had baked eggs that were flavorful and silky. I also ate the porridge that was filling and wonderful. Another person had the porridge. The other had the btreakfast board with meats, cheese and bread. It was all very good. The bill came to $40 and was worth every penny.

Broder has 3 locations in Portland and is only open from 8am to 3pm so plan carefully, should you go on a weekend be prepared to wait in a very long line, but it's worth it. Great Swedish Bords, Gravlax, aebleskiver, great coffee, Swedish meatballs (the sauce is great) and their potatoes..... WOW. Good value, nice place, amazing food

We enjoyed a variety of brunch food!! The hidden eggs were delicious! Coffee was wonderful and available while waiting! Photo of Dutch pancakes!

Small, crowded neighborhood Swedish restaurant with terrific, inexpensive food. Sit at the small lunch counter and watch 'em make those amazing aebleskivers (round pancakes dusted witih powdered sugar), an order of which you absolutely have to have. No matter what else you're eating. Other great things: walnut toast, Swedish hash with trout. Breakfast is served all day but they do have a lunch and dinner menu as well.

Having read how popular this cafe is (and it was Sunday) we went at 0815 (breakfast is served 0800-1500). There were already 5 people there and by the time we left there was only one empty table. We had a wonderful Scandinavia breakfast ... Pytt i Panna a kind of hash with baked eggs with pickled beetroot and walnut bread - delicious. I wished I had had room for some Danish Aebleskiver. I am delighted to hear they are soon to start serving dinners and I will definitely go there next time I am in Portland.

In large part I'm going to echo something an earlier reviewer noted. The food is great all around, though I would still say overhyped. We enjoyd the front end service, as well as the ongoing service. It all fell apart for me when our party of four was asked to leave because there was a long wait behind us. We hadn't lingered, had just finished and paid our bill, and then were asked to move along. That shouldn't happen, period. We won't be back, and are spreading the word.

I was intrigued by the menu. I make lefse but haven't ever had it at a restaurant - theirs was very good, though the lefse is used more as a base for flavors and food vs. being a central component. Everything we tried was tasty and the wait wasn't that long (no reservations, unfortunately). Service was decent - they were clearly busy.

We came there twice for brunch! Very nice place with some very nice food! Ableskiver are awesome- hot and tender, dip them into lemon curd (in fact I would suggest to order 2 lemon curd, since you can choose 2 sides with them. Though lingonberry jam is good as well). Coffee is good there (my caffe latte was just perfect). Smoked trout pytt and panna portion was generous, filling and tasty, solstice bord was gorgeous too (egg was deliciously liquid inside). Great place for brunch. Weekend can be busy- if you didn't make it to be there for the first seating (9AM), come around 10 then- first wave of customers will start leaving soon.

Yes this IS the PLACE to go, we will go back. The food is great, if it’s on a weekend don’t go until, 1pm, we went at 11am, and had to wait One Hour & a Half, now if there were only 2 of us or if we had wanted to sit at the bar, we could have gotten seated much earlier, but there was four of us. If you go on a week day, you shouldn’t have to Wait as long. We went to Hood River and ate at the hotel down town, which has, “Broders” restaurant too and that’s how I found out that there was this restaurant in the Clinton district. There is coffee outside for you to drink if you have to wait and I don’t usually mind waiting, but when it started to hail and my fingers were freezing, ( even though I had gloves on) we asked if we could wait inside, and found out there are a few chairs in front and back by the restrooms you can use, (if you are in back by the restrooms, be prepared to turn your legs to one side or the other so people can squeeze by). I don’t want to discourage anyone from going, I’m just trying to give you some tips, so you won’t have to wait as long. This is a popular place and people were still Arriving even after we ate. Try their swedish pancakes, you’ll want to come back and order them again, because you can’t gst these everywhere!

Pros: Food is outstanding both at breakfast and lunch. Portions leave you full, but not stuffed. Price is reasonable- good value. Cons: Wait can be up to one hour before you are seated and another 30 minutes to get food after you order. Servers tend to be young, pretty boy hipsters full of attitude.

I love breakfast and Broder was recommended by my Portland friends (who also said never go on weekends unless a 1+ hour wait sounds appealing.) Taking their advice, we went at 9:45am on a Monday and got the last open table! It was cozy and friendly so we settled in with our menus. I got the SOLSTICE BORD ($12)- and an array of deliciousness arrived at the table on a plank. It had a poached egg, ham, potato salad, toast with jam, fantastic cheese, rye crisp, spreadable cheese with chives AND a blueberry yogurt parfait with homemade granola! Ahhhh! It sounds like an epic amount of food, but the portions were adorably small and dainty. Next time I'm going for the Swedish pancakes; golfball-sized dough balls that you dip in jam. Yummm, I'm thinking about going back already!

We had a nice meal and experience at Broder. We asked the waiter for a recommendation, and he suggested great items. Do not miss the hot dog topped with a potato pancake and shrimp salad and wrapped in flat bread. Quite a dish. Small portions which I liked because we could try a few things. Plus, our tab for two Entrees and two drinks was $30. That is a good value. We will be back.

I love everything about this place, even waiting outside and sitting on a picnic table drinking self serve coffee until our table is ready. The Danish pancakes with homemade lemon curd...... the Lefse breakfast. I love the lighting and the atmosphere. Its one of those places where its always crowded and you don't mind, its part of the buzz.

Have been here for breakfast two days in a row. Went with my daughter and had to bring my husband the next day. On weekends the waits are crazy. Come prepared with cards or good conversation. Went on a Friday afternoon and sat right down. The Danish pancakes with the amazing lemon curd and berry jam were TDF. The smoked trout hash was delicious as well. Beautiful presentation, cool vibe in the restaurant. Great waiters. Will definitely be back!

I had been looking forward to trying out this place ever since I read about it about a year ago. We went for breakfast about a week ago, but frankly we're disappointed. The menu looked interesting but the food didn't really live up to previous reviews , and the service that day was poor. The smoked trout hash I ordered was swimming in grease and it literally took two dinner napkins to blot it out. I only saw two small pieces of smoked trout, and the flavor did not come through. I ordered the daily cocktail which supposedly came with a sprig of fresh marjoram, but when it arrived the marjoram was actually rotting. I felt that the waiter should have noticed this and not brought it to the table, because it was actually disgusting. He seemed annoyed when I asked him if he thought he could find a fresh one. He also never came back to check about whether the food was okay, and when I mention this at the end of the meal and his attitude was very defensive. He blamed one of the other waiters he thought should have checked for him. Between the unpleasant food and the poor service, I don't recommend choosing this place over the many great Portland breakfast spots.

This place is pretty small. We went soon after opening and there was no line. We had a toddler and it was kid friendly. The aebelskivers (Danish pancakes) are good and fun to share. The egg dishes were also tasty and the coffee was fresh and strong. Service was good and prices were on the high end of reasonable.

Possibly my favorite breakfast of the trip, Broder offers a lot classic Scandinavian recipes. The lost eggs were amazing and not to be missed. Eggs cooked in cream, spinach, and topped with a panko Parmesan crust was absolute perfection. The Ebelskiver (pancake ball things) were so good with the dipping sauces. We went when they opened on a Wednesday and had no issues getting a table right away. I hear that on the weekends they can be packed so plan accordingly

Their daily menu has never disappointed me. If I could think of anything negative, it would be the wait. I would go there more often if I did not have to wait so long every time.

We stopped by For breakfast at Broder. The place is in a residential area. Small but nicely appointed bar and restaurant combo. The food is cooked to order within sight. I had the Farmers cheese with peas egg scramble. It was very tasty. The pastries and potato pancake was good as well. Service was good. An excellent pace to stop fir something different. A little pricy but worth it

We must have had good timing because we arrived at 9:30 on a Fri am and got in right away. Service was attentive and prompt (important when you are hungry in the morning!) but not rushed. Everything our group ordered was fresh, unique and outstanding! Soy (yes! a restaurant that has soy!!) Mocha was amazing!

My babe and I have been coming here since 2016. Ever since our first visit the employees remembered us and always seem to go above and beyond with their service. I can honestly say this place has the best customer service I’ve ever experienced. Hands down. It’s a small joint with one bathroom so it can get crowded with all the people waiting for tables near the entrance. You’re seated pretty close to one another too but it’s manageable. We’ve had some cute conversations with our neighbors. The wait is totally worth it when you sit down for your meal though, so enjoy some coffee that’s outside by the picnic tables and chill. The pancakes are delicious, well, everything I’ve tried has been damn delightful. The second time we came here they actually gifted us some pancakes and asked us how our son was doing. We were surprised & appreciative of the kind gesture. This review is so long overdue. Broder rules and next time you visit pdx or you are a local and want to get a good brunch, get in here and eat a scramble!

Cool neighborhood and local favorite. Creative menu and fresh farm to table. If you like great food, come here.

Great place for breakfast or lunch. Definitely a different than your run of the mill restaurant. Nice atmosphere, friendly staff and a great selection of delicious food. Our group of 3 had the aebelskeiver, thick cut toast and the Swedish Hash (with butternut squash and brussel sprouts). I cannot pick a favorite - they were all very different and excellent! It is a wonderful place to go for a great dining experience.

A Portland friend picked me up from my downtown hotel to have brunch her on a Monday, and we had to wait 30-40 minutes! I loved the granola parfait and the Swedish pancakes. My baked omelette was OK. The "nut bread" was spectacular. Good coffee. Will come back despite the wait.

Broder was a recommendation from another blogger and I was very glad I listened. This place is charming and so cute. I ordered the baked egg scramble with smoked trout, fresh dill and charred scallions. I also ordered a tangerine mimosa, and ÆBLESKIVER, which are danish pancakes (little dough balls). They are served with house-made lemon curd & lingonberry jam. SO AWESOME. The wait was a little extensive, but worth it in my opinion.

Went here on a Tuesday morning and had to wait for about 15 minutes. We sat at the bar and our waiter was probably one of the best servers we had. Next time I am just going to get coffee and Danish pancakes. We had the hash with ham and ribs and lost eggs also. They were all great but oh the pancakes...

The location is small but quaint. Had seen Andrew Zimmern eat here on his latest visit to Portland and enticed us to go. The Danish pancakes (really large donut holes) were fantastic and the Lost Eggs were great too. Shared with my husband. They have the largest selection of aquavit so had to try the Danish Mary with dill aquavit. Everything looked good and well presented.

It's been 2 years since my last visit and it was even better than I remembered! Every item on the menu is worth a try and some worthy of ordering even if you know you won't finish (get the danish pancakes - just order them no matter what) But sitting at the 4 seat counter and watching this tiny kitchen turn out miracles is worthy of the meal price alone. The cook who said he had been there for 3 years, told me on weekends trush he starts with a line when they get there and ends when they put up the chairs. We arrived about an hour after opening on a Saturday and had a 30 minute wait. Standing outside drinking self serve coffee and enjoying the brisk morning, the only complaint was watching other diners feast. Small, old world charm mixed with just a hint of Portland weird. Everyone was friendly, and many of the diners had walked over from the neighborhood. There are now 3 or 4 locations in Portland, so pick your location and head over. Menu has some open faced sandwiches as part of the breakfast offerings. Some lighter and a few HEAVY DUTY meals. Specials are written up on the chalk board. (rotating potato crepe (Lepse)

We went here for a late brunch on a weekend, so it was a bit of a wait to get in to the restaurant, about 10 minutes. Our server was super friendly and informative regarding their akvavit selection (a Scandinavian liquer) and was kind enough to get us a mini flight so we could taste them all. The potato pancakes were super tasty, as was the veggie hash with one exception: it was floating in a sea of butter. I like butter, but it was a bit too much on a July morning in a sweltering restaurant.

I doubt that they need any more 5-star reviews, as they've got a large and loyal customer base. My daughter recommended this place, and we both loved it. A Swedish cafe in SE Portland (BTW, you could eat at great places in Portland w/o ever having to leave the SE neighborhoods), Broder offers so many dream choices for breakfast/brunch afficionados: http://broderpdx.com/breakfast.php Go ahead, I DARE you to choose just one item from that smorgasbord.I had the Swedish Hash w/braised beef short ribs and smoked ham, and it was evil-good. Very friendly service w/just the right touch of hipster mode. If I lived in Portland, I'd probably choose the SE, just so that I'd have places like Broder's right down the street. Easy five stars for me.
Great Scandinavian Breakfast Brunch and Lunch Choices
We come to Portland frequently and enjoy all the breakfast places around the SE Portland area. One that is very different and sure to excite you is Broder's Cafe. We had to wait an hour on a Monday so get there when you are not so hungry and ponder the menu so you know what you want to order. We came for breakfast but after waiting an hour it ended up as brunch. Try to share dishes as the food is too much especially if you get some of the larger dishes like the Danish pancakes or the Swedish meatballs. My spouse had the lamb burger and I had a special hash with ham and beef short ribs meat - PYTT I PANNA (SWEDISH HASH). I like my hash crispy but it came out with too much butter and not too crispy at all - tasty but a little too much fat in it for my taste hence the 4 stars instead of 5. The ketchup is homemade and delicious. The beet salad is excellent. Sometimes we wish we lived in Portland so we can go out to a different place every week for breakfast!!!
