This is like a trip to SE Asia. The only dish I tried on my only visit was bun bo hue soup, which was rich, spicy, nuanced and delicious.

Go for the bun bo

By ouchfirehot |

There are only two items on the food menu - bun bo and pho. Skip the pho and go for the bun bo. The pho is kind of different. The bun bo is spot on. Portion size is very large. As other reviewers mentioned, it includes the pork knuckles and congealed blood. But also a ton of different pork cuts. It's pretty spicy too. The service was utilitarian, as a lot of vietnamese restaurants in town tend to be. I'd say four stars for food, two for service.

Great Place for Pho

By Latino_Loco |

We went to Bun Bo Hue and really liked the Pho there. The food was great and the owner was very friendly. The food was good and really different from other Pho we have had. I would recommend this place to those who would like to try the southern Vietnamese food.

Still the best bun bo Hue!

Every time we visit Portland, we go to Bun Bo Hue! This remains the best Bun Bo Hue I've had, outside of Vietnam. I've reviewed this place before, but I thought it deserved a second shout out! The owners/staff are super nice, too. Man, this is soup to dream about. Nothing phony about this place. Just delicious.

Amazingly Authentic Bun Bo Hue!

By Kim T |

I was looking for a place to have this special Vietnamese noodle soup. I saw reviews and it was mostly good. The decor was ok, with hard booths, seating 4 people, as tables lining a small restaurant and two large tables in the center of the restaurant. It was a bit awkward having a whole both to myself, but what can I do? It was a ”seat yourself” place, I think. The server didn’t really greet me and it took some time to get to me, but it seemed like there was only one. I got their special Bun Bo Hue at medium spicy (small size, $9) with rare beef ($2) too. I was served a tall glass of cold tea. It was ok. The noodle soup came with a fish sauce & chili dipping/extra sauce, side of veggies (basil, bean sprouts, sliced cabbage, spicy herb?, slice of lime, and strips of swirly veggies). I was really impressed with the veggie and sauce already because that is darn authentic (except the cabbage)! The noodle soup had slices of pork with skin, small pieces of pork hock, the rare beef, beef flank, pork slices, Vietnamese ham slices, and pork blood squares. This is very authentic! There were bits of all these meats. Many places that serve this dish have only the beef flank, pork slices, and ham; there is no extra fish sauce; and the veggies are only bean sprouts, lime, and basil. I, of course, added all the veggies and squeezed the lime in. I mixed everything and placed a bit of everything in a spoon with some broth. It all tasted fantastically like home, and Vietnam! I couldn’t believe how good and authentic the broth was. Every little detail from the meat, veggies, and broth was so familiar and delicious! Of course the medium spicy was a bit too spicy for me, so I struggled a bit, but it was wonderful. I have been looking all over Vancouver, BC for this authentic taste (we have many, many Vietnamese restaurants), and I finally found it in Portland! Because I added so many veggies, I added the extra fish sauce for more flavour and it was all so delightful. Overall, this was the best Bun Bo Hue I have had, besides home and in Vietnam. I highly recommend this place if you want a true taste of Vietnam and are really adventurous. This dish is actually this ”weird” and had been tamed down a lot in practically all restaurants, so it’s rare to see it so untouched. I am giving this place a 4 because the service and decor of the place isn’t the greatest, but the food and the price is just fabulous!

as real as bun bo hue gets outside vietnam.

haven't had Pho this great in many years. order the eponymous bowl your first visit, "with everything, plus raw beef"... even the plate of unfamiliar herbs and veggie condiments is totally authentic. some ingredients in the "with everything" may be off-putting to fussy eaters, but each was really delicious and worth a little adventure. try the yummy steamed sausage in banana leaf, too... unlike anything i've had. place looks alike a hole in the wall, but clean, and the family who runs it makes you so welcome it doesn't matter what it looks like. they are clearly interested in serving the real deal, and it works. i can hardly wait to be in portland again to dive into their fantastic soup!

Hole in the wall

By OishiMizu |

This hole in the wall serves amazing bun bo hue Vietnamese noodle soup. It used to only serve that one. Over the years, it has gained popularity and upgraded cleaner, more comfortable and more menu items. But I still go for the bun bo hue. Hot spicy noodles, great flavors, friendly service!

Awesome!

I just got back home from living in Hue for the last 2 years. This is the best, most authentic Vietnamese food I have found in Portland. It's not much for atmosphere or curb appeal but the food is perfect. Most of the clientele was Vietnamese and Vietnamese American which is always a good sign. My suggestion is to be adventurous, and learn that there so many more soups in Vietnam than pho. Great place!

High recommended

Pass by this restaurant on road trip. Amazed by how authentic these noodle soups are!! Highly recommend!

So good!

Delicious! Four of us sat down to bowls of beef and pork. We all loved it. Really appreciated the simplicity of just two menu items too. Focused attention like that means that what they do serve is pretty much perfect.

Truly authentic Bun Bo Hue

By _tomnguyen001 |

Well, there are many places around Portland that serve this soup from the central part of Vietnam. This one takes the price, though. Tiny place - probably about 6-8 tables. The menu is small but hits all the favorite. However, you don't come here for other choices... Their Bun Bo Hue is just sublimed. Gorgeous broth, spicy just right and thinly sliced beef with the small pieces of pig knuckles. Of course, you can ask for the pig blood cube on the side (or not at all). The price point is good. For the special bowl, it sets you back $ 12. Just a great bowl of soup - probably the best in the US

The best noodle of this type in Portland

By Xuan V |

I came here like every time I want this type of noodle. This is one of the best restaurants in Portland to me. The owners are really nice and friendly. Customer service is professional to me.

Best bun bo Hue, why else would they name the restaurant that way.

By John Sowell |

I've been coming here for nearly a decade and the family-run Bun Bo Hue serves up one of the best soups in Portland. Forget pho, bun bo Hue with pork and a spicy broth shines so much greater. Bun bo Hue gets short shrift in pho crazy Portland. I've had some great bowls of pho in town, but they don't compare to the bun bo Hue here and the mi quang at Rose VL, one of the best soups I've had in my life. Just slurping the bun bo Hue broth would be a highly pleasant experience. But the meats and fish cake and noodles round out this soup to make it a complete meal. Some people downgrade this restaurant, saying it's lacking in decor. That may be the case, but wall hangings and chintzy tchotchkes are not what I look for in a restaurant. I'm interested in the food, man. And this is a place that excels at that.

Seriously?

Maybe it's because I have such great Pho at my disposal in California, but I can't believe people think this place deserves such great reviews. I came here with a serious pho craving and was pretty disappointed. I love my hole in the wall family places, but I did not like this place. An expressionless lady came to take our order. She slapped my friend in the shoulder when he didn't say what he wanted during the rotation (kinda funny, and totally an Asian thing to do...but still). Then when the food arrived, she removed the chopsticks from my black friend's hands, and gave him a spoon and fork (again, this was pretty funny...but just because he's black doesn't mean he can't use chopsticks...he is from the California Bay Area). Anyway...food was so so...service was...well...we got served. I wouldn't go back. I wouldn't recommend this place.

Best bun bo hue

By Mary Q |

This is the best bun bo hue I've had outside of Vietnam. Authentic right down to the pork knuckles and congealed pork blood (which, despite how it sounds, is very yummy). Delicious. I'm giving this a 5 for atmosphere because even though it's not slick like many American Vietnamese restaurants, it actually feels like a restaurant in Vietnam, which is where I want to be when I'm slurping my noodle soup. If only there were a rooster calling somewhere in the background.

My wife loved the place

By Woodcrest55129 |

Best Bun Bo Hue she had in a long time and she loves Bun Bo Hue. Good service. T you are there for the food, not the decor. My daughter had it to but with fewer spices
