Wonderful food in great neighborhood

By Annie G |

The food at Bursa was excellent, but equally good was the service and the atmosphere. The staff was attentive and thoughtful. The restaurant appears to be a favorite among locals in the West Portal area. The combo appetizer plate was incredible, as was the stuffed eggplant. The entire experience was delightful.

Scrumptious Middle Eastern Greek delight

By TRAVELERVIAJERO |

Today was the second time I visited after two years and the quality remains the same. Without doubt Bursa is now going to be a regular place. All the food tastes fresh and the prices are reasonable. Nice aesthetically as well. My ratings is based in comparison to level 5, but if compared within the restaurant category I would pick a 5.

Cozy place for Turkish fast food

By MontereyFoodie |

The dining room is cozy and dark blue. Helpful waitstaff. Large portion appetizers and entrees. Tasty food but limited menu. Wish they had a mezze platter to try various dishes.

Not bad

By Meric |

As a Turkish, I wanted to spoild myself during my trip with some good food and wi found this place and since it has such nice reviews I wanted to give it a try, the restaurant ambiance is nice, staff are kind but food was bit of a disappointment for me, especially the taste of the meat had a smell that i dont like, but still maybe it was just not for me, still one must give it a try!

Delightful atmosphere. Small

By JCrog |

Delightful atmosphere. Small but quaint. Stopped here with friends and was happily surprised by yummy food. Service was good. Had to wait a bit to be seated but they turned the table as quick as they could.

Larger parties friendly

By lovestotravel967 |

This restaurant is very nice for larger parties and they take reservations. Their plates are great for sharing as well.

Fun, fresh, unique

By canadafoodiewannabe |

Wasn't sure what to expect with Turkish cuisine. Mainly a different twist on standard Greek fare. Started with the Baba ghanouj - very fresh and delicious. Pita was fresh and thin so not too filling. Entres we has were the Halibut, beef stroganoff and beef kabob ( two large kebabs) with rice and salad. None disappointed. For dessert had the Chocolate cup with vanilla bean brulee, a perfect end to a great experience.

Best food

We love Bursa. Everything on the menu is a thrill for your taste buds and the service is amazing. Thank you Bursa for being there to depend on for delicious food.

Best in the neighborhood

By Bostonvisitorxx |

Staying in SF for several days at a rental house in this neighborhood. Tried a few other restaurants that were recommended, but this one was by far the best. The fact that it was packed with locals and others was our first clue! The four of us shared the Combo appetizer and really enjoyed all the flavors. I just had crab cakes (another appetizer) for an entree, but others had the Iskender and Adana kebab. We all enjoyed everything (note the Adana kebab is REALLY spicy!). Atmosphere was fun and service was terrific.

Original Choice is crowded market

By MKristian |

We arrived at 7pm on a Saturday and were notified it was a 30 minute wait. Given the bar was full, the owner took my cell while grabbing a drink down the street. A table opened early and he was courteous to hold our table for an extra 15 minutes so we could finish our drink. Upon arriving you notice this restaurant has a strong local following. Their menu selection is filled with a mix of recognizable dishes and original items you've never tried. I'd recommend the combo appetizer platter for first time visitors. It's a generous portion for up to 4 people and it's all very tasty. I tried the Beyti which was like nothing I had had before. It had an amazing presentation with a great mild lamb flavor. I also tried my cousins Musakka which was the most flavorful I had ever had. The other most noteworthy item were the Cigar pastries. Atmosphere was average for noise and tables were close together. The restaurant is fast to serve and is quick when turning tables, but not obnoxiously so. All in all, Bursa would be a regular if I were a Bay Area resident.

Very good and not heavy...

By Keith J |

Very good and not heavy considering how much yogurt was involved.

Greco-Turkish Delicacies in West Portal

By Yog-Sothoth |

We just moved to the neighborhood and are availing ourselves of the many dining options on West Portal. We happened to dine at Bursa on the day we moved in. They squeezed us in with a good will, though the place was busy on a Saturday night (all the WP restaurants seem to be pretty busy all the time, come to think of it). Bursa has an interesting selection of Greek and Turkish beers, none of which I had ever heard of (recommend the "Mythos" for a lager and the "Efes" for a dark beer). Mousakka was tasty, and I actually got lunch out of it the next day - the portions are LARGE. Another time I would go direct for the kebab options.

Incredible Atmosphere - Delicious Cuisine

By JDSoui |

Had a great dinner with my wife along with family and relatives. We had a reservation late afternoon/early evening and upon arrival our table was ready. The group ordered a combo dessert that included hummus and falafel along with other appetizers to complement warm bread, olive oil and a spice that the bread is dipped into. The food and presentation were incredible. The group ordered everything from the shrimp kebabs, chicken, lamb and combo kebabs as well as the stroganoff and Iskender. The spices used and the flavor of the food were truly phenomenal. The only downside from the experience was that for a portion of the meal a group of approximately 10 people had 3 or 4 children with them that made conversation a bit difficult; however, that is by no means a fault of the restaurant. The wait staff and the employees cordial and prompt on service filling up glasses without being asked. Overall Bursa is a place we would continue to support whenever we have the opportunity to visit family in the Bay area.

Mediterranean getaways

By audrey r |

Nice atmosphere. Good baba ghanosh, Turkish coffee. Kebobs, rice, yum........Avoid parking meters and park in neighborhood behind for free for two hours.

Casual middle Eastern food with good quality and flavor

By art-scuba |

It was an easy drive from the valley to find this place on Saturday for lunch. The Falafel is tatsy and perfectly cooked. The side sauces are yogurt based and a bit salty. The dolmah was soft. Red lentil soup was flavorful and heavy. My husband and kid loved the lamb and beef skewers which were so soft.

Delicious

By yttiksm |

I ate dinner at this small restaurant on a weeknight. The food was excellent and the server was very attentive. We had hummus, which came with warm pita strips and they also brought out warm bread with oil and spices for dipping. I had steak kabobs, which came with rice and salad. Very large portions. Would highly recommend this restaurant!

Best Falafel & Grape Leaves I’ve Eaten

By Terese C |

We arrived early as we had our granddaughter and wanted to get her home. Two tables were taken. By time we left ~1 hr later, there were people standing in the doorway waiting for tables to get up. The cigar pastries were wrapped in a fine dough similar to phyllo and stuffed with feta and parsley. They were served with a dipping sauce which was very tasty. We also ordered a combo plate for an appetizer with an assortment of grape leaves, falafel, hummus and other items that I had no idea what they were. The grape leaves and falafel was the best I’ve eaten at any restaurant. The lamb kabob came on two long skewers with onion & red pepper and was very flavorful served over jasmine rice, and a Greek salad. That entire dish was very tasty. I would have to say this is the best Mediterranean restaurant I’ve eaten at thus far.

awesome food, even better service

By Sharon W |

Stumbled upon this gem after enjoying a few at the philosopher club (bar) up the street. The place wasn't too crowded at about 6p, we were sat right away, and started with some wine and some appetizers, at which time we started talking with the owner, who was amazing and took over the ordering and brought us plate after plate of amazing food, along with perfectly paired delicious wines. He was a joy to talk to and we really enjoyed the meal and the conversation. We finished with an awesome dessert, and for no good reason, he comped us a good portion of the bill (and we tipped commensurately) but I was duly impressed as we were visiting as out-of-towners and he really didn't have to do that for us. What a guy! We had a great time and truly this review is past due. Thanks again Bursa!

Good food, very good service

By PammerC |

The food was all fresh and delicious. The service could not have been better, with greetings from the owner and attentive help from a sweet (and beautiful waitress). We dined with three adults, one teenager and one four year old. The waitress was prompt and friendly when the teenager spilled his water (cleaned up with a minimum of embarrassment) and when the four year old was fussy (they have a cache of toy cars that she brought for him to play with).

Delicious food, great service

By Juliana H |

We stumbled on this restaurant accidentally, and can't stop talking about it. Everything was ideal, from the food to the service to the atmosphere. We enjoyed it all--appetizers, great entrees, and some of the best dessert ever. The food was labeled as "Mediterranean" and got a thumbs up from our entire eclectic group: a native Egyptian, two more who had lived in Egypt, one who had lived in Morocco, and four raised in Utah. The service was top notch at every position. The décor and location were cozy, inviting, and interesting. Parking nearby was not difficult. There was a small wait when we arrived, so they took our number and called us when our table was ready. We enjoyed the lovely bookstore nearby while we waited. The entire experience was lovely.

Neighborhood Gem

By LDGM |

When the urge hits for Mediterranean cuisine look no further than Bursa Restaurant. The owner is hands on, meets and greats diners and truly treats them like guests in his home. Atmosphere is casual and unpretensious and the restaurant has a warm feeling. The food is consistently excellent. For groups would suggest starting with their combo platter. Highly recommend the rack of lamb which comes with a pilaf combo and asparagus. Tender and beautifully seasoned. All the kebabs are excellent (my husband is partial to the Kofte Kebab) and come with a generous amount of rice (think it is basmati rice). On this trip tried the Feta prawns which were delicious - tangy and pungent. The wine list is well edited and pocketbook friendly. A pefect place to come solo, a deux or with a larger group. Bursa is very accommodating and have seen many a large party here.

Fantastic Turkish food . One

By Nathalie F |

Fantastic Turkish food . One of our favourite in San Francisco. Chasing place and great cuisine ....

Adequate

By Gregory S |

We rode Muni out to West Portal to escape from the tourists at Embarcadero. The thought being, that restaurants at West Portal must be good because they do not depend on tourists. After walking both side of West Portal Avenue for a couple of blocks, we decided on Bursa Mediterranean Cuisine. We were promptly seated and presented with lunch menus. Service was good throughout the meal. We ordered dolmas appetizer, lamb kebabs, and spicy adana. Dolmas was good. I really like the way the grape leaves are prepared. Lamb kebab was anemic with very little lamb. It was mostly rice. Spicy adana was flavorful but short on spice. It was mostly pita. We will return to West Portal in the future to try a couple of interesting looking restaurants; but, we will skip Bursa.

Tasty and friendly

By iLya K |

This is a very good place! People who work there are very welcoming and friendly. The service is professional and quick. Once you are done with your meal no one will rush you off... The food is very fresh, well balanced and healthy. Flat bread is amazing. They serve great Turkish/ arabic style coffee - Al Hamid, worse a try. Oh, did I mention the ambiance? I loved the interior design! The fabric on the chairs and sofas and the artwork make the chi flow.

Our favorite restaurant in West Portal

By Loungesong |

Bursa has fantastic Mediterranean food. Lunch special is one of the best deals in SF. The owner and manager are very personable guys that will make a memorable meal. House made bread and pita are absolute gems.

DEEElicious Food

By evie d |

I have nothing but good things to say about Bursa! The food is amazing and reasonably priced. Great for locals and tourists. I'll definitely bring house guests here in the future.

Everything is perfect

By muneeramb |

The service is exceptional. The food is delicious. The ambiance and decor is lovely. Dishes I love: Beyti, Kofte Plate (my fav), chicken kabob plate, Musaka, the stuffed eggplant... i think everything actually. Haydari is a super yummy dip. I like this place for a date, intimate close friends or even maybe a family dinner. oh' and its halal. There are not many places that have good food and have pretty interiors that are halal. West Portal is a cute and quaint little downtown area.

Great food; cheap lunch specials

By travelmeisteren |

A friend recommended this place – he’s been going there for years. We had lunch (cheap at $8 per person) and thoroughly enjoyed our food. I love Turkish and Mediterranean food so I was excited. Bursa did not let me down. I had chicken shish along with lentil soup. My friend had the wrap. All were really good. Bursa was a great find for me since the food is very much Turkish inspired and I absolutely love Turkish food.

Bursa SFO

Excellent service, very good skewers served generously. Oh, hummus excellent. We'll be right back. Very good address to spend a pleasant and friendly time.

Delicious!

By Olivia K |

OMG I love this place for take out lunch and also dining with the family. The kofte with mixed lamb/beef kabob with rice is so good! The chicken kabob is so tender and once again the rice is so good! It gets busy during lunch time so make reservations so you have time to find parking. Parking is available, you just need to circle a few times. It's so worth it!

Very nice evening meal. Lovely feel to the place, with attentive polite staff. Lovely wine and nice food, at a reasonable price. I really didn't need the Greek salad as a first course, as the Kebabs come with more than enough salad.

My Favorite Restaurant in West Portal

By TravellingPumpkinPat |

To my dearest friendly staff over there— all of you are doing such excellent customer service. I will recommend To eat Feta Prawns and Baba Ghanouj for appetizers, citrus chicken wrap with fries or kebab with arugula salad. This are just some of my favorite. Every dining experience is a superb. Also the price is just right. That is why I keep coming back.

Excellent food, service, ambiance, and reasonable prices.

By Jeffrey F |

On February twelfth, 2017, I had the best fish meal I have ever had, the haddock entree at Bursa. It was a thick filet, perfectly and evenly cooked, infused with a lemon essence and delicious spices. Absolutely luscious. I am seventy-three years old. I have lived and eaten great fish in Florida, California, Maryland, Spain, Portugal, Mexico, and many other fine fish locations. The haddock entree at Bursa was the best ever for me. A sampler platter starter was really good. Everybody in the party of four was happy with everything from the appetizers to the lovely rice pudding dessert and the delicious glass of port (for only $5). It wasn't cheap but we had a great meal for four with drinks, appetizer, entrees, and dessert for $160 with a good tip. Try it, you'll like it

Mediterranean Delight

One of our top favorite restaurants is San Francisco. Almost every menu item is delicious. Our favorite is the donner kabob and the Staff is incredibly friendly and helpful.

Very good Middle Eastern food

By beannie C |

Pluses: We started with the cigar pastries. These are phyllo wrapped around a mild feta. Very nice. I ordered the rack of lamb and it was fabulous. The lamb was tender and wonderfully herbed/spiced. The asparagus and pilaf sides were also very tasty. The service was excellent given how crowded it was on a Friday night. The Lincourt Pinot Noir, at $42, was a bargain. A lovely Pinot. Minuses: My partner had Iskander, beef slices over bread with a tomato sauce. The beef was over cooked and the bread was croutons, unfortunately. The restaurant is very loud. We could converse with some difficulty. Parking in West Portal was non-existent, so we ended up parking on Santa Clara Street three blocks away. We definitely will be back; we've eaten at Bursa a number of times previously, mostly for lunch, and have generally been pleased. It is our go to restaurant in West Portal.

Inexpensive lovely lunch

By ElizabethStreetMoM |

Atmosphere: Casual; comfortable with well padded booths, friendly, talkative, but not too loud Food: dined at lunch. Enjoyed the Greek salad with shrimp; ample size and many good tastes. Cost: $8.00 for salad was a bargain and $6. extra for warm tasty shrimp was a good buy The service was prompt. I would dine there again while in the West Portal area.

The kunefe is as good as we remembered it

By Staidthere |

Bursa bills itself as offering Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, Turkish food. We feel it offers mainly Turkish food. We had eaten at Bursa twice before in the last five years, and we remembered how delicious was the kunefe. We went again on the last day of 2011. We had stuffed eggplant and rack of lamb which consisted of four chops. Both dishes were very good. Bursa seems much more popular than when we had been there previously. It was hard to get a reservation for prime times, and people were waiting at the door. The noise level went up and down, and there were times when we could not converse because of noise from the long table next to us. The lighting is low and romantic. The bare walls are covered only with paintings, and we wondered if some drapes would dampen the noise. Service was friendly and prompt. The kunefe was absolutely delicious. The price was quite reasonable. On the whole, our experience was very good.

Love me some Bursa!

By Danielle K |

Great food, great service! Love the lunch specials and wraps, although love them so much I'm kinda bummed they don't offer them during dinner :( Seriously only downside to this place! Staff is amazing! Nothing much else to say!

Great neighborhood restaurant

By Julianna2013 |

We love coming to Bursa. They have great salads, appetizers, and kebobs. I have never had a bad meal here, and the staff is very accommodating.

Very good mediterrainian food

By smcrawford38 |

If you are looking for tender meat, delicious hummus, and wonderful wine, this is the restaurant to go to if you're in the city. We were so pleased and happy our friends recommended this place to us. The staff was so nice taking us without a RSVP, even though they were very busy.

Try Baba and Kefta vegetarian! Must visit!

By Bob W |

My best all time favor in West Portal! I would eat there weekly, as it is so perfect. From the service, ambiance, food quality and convenience! This is truly a GEM in SFO!

Wonderful service and Baba ghanoush prepared to perfection

By GFP32999 |

We were a party of three and all made a point to order different dinners to split and share. The friendly, home-like atmosphere fosters that style of eating. We saw the meals were substantial so we just ordered one appetizer of Baba Ghanoush. It was the best I have eaten in decades. It had the perfect blend of flavors, including a rich smoky taste that was still light. It is hard to describe - so I suggest you just try it! Every dinner was great so I can't recommend one in particular. Nice wine and beer selection too. We look forward to returning.

Look Up Mediterrean

By Ted Luehs |

Salads, wraps, kebabs. Located near the west end of the Twin Peaks tunnel. Empire theater across street. Nice atmosphere. Had the Greek salad and an eggplant appetizer which seemed more tomato based than eggplant.

Best falafels ever!

By Valerie |

As a vegetarian I often eat falafel, this was the best falafel I have ever tasted. The hummus was absolutely to die for!

You Will Eat Here More Than Once

By ElDude9 |

Wonderful, tasty middle-eastern fare. Try the kebobs. So succulent and satisfying. They will take good care of you here and you will go back if you can. "Now THAT was food!" said one of our party as we left.

Exceptional value

By Staidthere |

After trying without success to find a parking space near Troya when there was a street fair nearby, we went to Bursa for lunch where we walked in and were shown to a table along the main wall. The marinated shrimp kebab with paprika and rice went together perfectly. The $8 chicken wraps with pickles were delicious with a thick sweet bread wrap. We ordered a kunefe, and it was so exceptionally delicious that we ordered a second one and finished it quickly. We still feel that Bursa makes the best kunefe of all Turkish restaurants in San Francisco. Considering the price, good portions, and friendly service, Bursa provides a terrific value for lunch or dinner. And the kunefe is out of this world.

Great little restaurant in W. Portal

By MandB31 |

Eaten several times at Bursa. Always great food and nice presentation. Service is good, although not always perfect. Restaurant is getting more crowded and more and more folks learn about it. This problem will only get worse now that two popular restaurants in West Portal are closed. Dinner is a little pricey, but lunch is very, very reasonable. Great find and great choice for a nice dinner with family or friends.

Quick Mediterranean Lunch

By Florian B |

Been here multiple times. Always a good place for lunch and a conversation in a setting that feels upscale yet not posh - great place for a lunch conversation.

Always Fresh & Good

By Berlioz D |

Relatively reasonably priced, but, portions are getting skimpier compared to a year ago. And, the salads are with noticeably fewer ingredients. I counted three pieces of stuffed grape leaves in the Greek Salad. Its bad business to keep shrinking portions and the variety of contents.

Delicious food

By scricey |

We went on a Wednesday night and the place was packed! We were lucky enough to get a table without a reservation. The food was delicious, staff friendly and efficient, good wine list. We would definitely return if we visited the area again. If you were going there for a romantic dinner, the decor is good but it was quite noisy when we were there.

Excellent middle eastern restaurant

By bbdn796 |

Delicious, beautifully presented food, friendly service. We like taking visitors and friends there. We even celebrated our anniversary at Bersa.

Great

By Kasac1943 |

Eggplant wrap. Fresh house made flatbread and delicious eggplant, just the right amount of feta. Also delicious lamb kebab. Arugula salad fresh and not peppery.

Delicious, healthy food in West Portal

By BM609 |

Bursa opens at noon (not a moment earlier) and stays open all afternoon and all evening. I love to eat a relaxed late lunch or early dinner there, between the more crowded lunch and dinner hours. They gladly prepare take-out orders too. Everything is delicious! I especially love their chicken kabobs (available all day) and fish entrees (dinner menu). Their homemade pita bread is scrumptious. Portions are generous. Everything is fresh. They have an $8 lunch menu, great value. You can always request the larger-portion dinner size, then take the leftovers home!

Lunch at Bursa

By AverageTraveller1 |

Bursa has brought back its lunch 'personality', something that the West Portal neighborhood would certainly appreciate. Currently, lunch is mainly wraps, appetizers and salads, at $8 an item. Wine, champagne and beer, Turkish coffee and dessert are all available too, so it's up to you to make it a half-hour lunch/brunch or a longer/bigger meal. There are six items (currently) in the wrap section of the menu. I tried the salmon and falafel wraps. A falafel wrap is a classic, of course, and Bursa makes some of the best falafels in the Bay Area anyway. The salmon wrap is a bit of a novelty, and pleasingly so, the way it's done here. Where Bursa scores, over many other good places that serve wraps, is with the subtle avocado-tahini sauce that's in the falafel wrap and the flavorful arugula aioli/auli in the outstanding salmon wrap. Fries are a great (included in the price) option with any wrap. $8 is an unbelievable price for wraps of this quality, in such an atmospheric setting.

Lunch or Dinner -- Fab!

By JeanetteCool |

I have now been to Bursa perhaps 6 times -- lunch and dinner. I have met clients there, gone with friends and with family. The lunch menu and the dinner menu are both interesting and with something for everyone. In my own home, I serve Mediterranean food -- so we know the food culture -- and Bursa has never disappointed. Most recently I had Musakka -- and the vegetables were cooked to perfection. The lunchtime wraps are quite delicious (even though I am not a fan of "wraps" and certainly not calling falafel a "wrap" -- oh well) and the meal portions are sizable. Most recently, the waitress we had was just wonderful -- we liked her so much. She was thoughtful, answered questions and after my personal description of a wine I would love -- she got the info from someone on their staff -- and recommended a wine that I did really like! I will be taking a client there for lunch this Friday--and was just there last week with another client! I like this place, obviously.

Great yet healthy food, and outstanding service

By AverageTraveller1 |

This restaurant serves Mediterranean/Middle-Eastern cuisine. Ambience: Really good. The blue interior walls with the trims give it a classic yet modern look/decor. You can hear the others at your table - the accoustics are good. Appetizers and small dishes: First things first... they get the 'staples' such as falafels, lentil soup, hummus, baba gannoush (and Turkish/Arabic coffee) right. In fact, their staples are excellent. The appetizer plate is a great way to sample a number of them, plus more items like their mercimek kofte (largely lentil-based) and haydari (yogurt-based), both of which deserve special mention. The plate can be shared by two or even four people. Alcohol/Beverages: Their wine selection has some thought behind it. It does go well with the food. They always seem to have good pinot noirs. They also make Italian sodas. And, of course, there's the Turkish coffee, made the traditional way. Salads: The Greek salad is excellent. Bursa does a special version of it by adding dried cranberries and pita-chip fragments. Another excellent salad is the falafel salad - it comes with large falafels (stuffed with a bit of goat-cheese). Entrees: The samakkah harrah (halibut on a pepper-tahini sauce) is outstanding, as is the chicken sautee. Dessert: They have baklava, of course, and it's very good. The kuneifi (roughly described as a slightly salty, cheesy 'filling', a shell of roasted, shredded phillo and some tasty crust) is simply outstanding. For something less sweet, try the flavored rice pudding. They have other, more 'Western' dessert too. Other features: On some Friday evenings, they put on music and belly-dancing. It's fun to see the belly-dancer wind her way in-between tables. Highlights: 1. The service is outstanding. The waiting-staff are mostly long-timers. They scan the tables pretty well and you never have, say, your water not refilled. If you're there way beyond closing-time, they are patient. If there's a bit of a wait to get in, they aren't averse to serving you some wine as you wait, even if there's limited seating at the counter. Bursa's owner, Gihad, seems to be a very familiar and popular face in West Portal. 2. One of the things that make Bursa a classy restaurant is their attention to the 'small' detail. The ingredients are of the highest quality and the sauces and sides that come with the entrees - down to the rice - are evidently prepared with as much care as the entrees themselves. 3. It's possible to eat really healthily here - this isn't true of many, many fine restaurants. Some of it is the cuisine itself. More than that, Bursa's innovation with the salads and solidity with the appetizers make it possible to do so. On some nights, I have ordered a glass of wine, the lentil soup, an appetizer, the Greek salad and a coffee, and been very happy. It's easy to say Bursa is one of the best restaurants in the city.

great!

By Rick C |

Friends who live in the area took us to Bursa. The food was delicious. Service was a bit rocky, they completely missed a couple of items, so one of us didn't get their entre with the others, and one of the salads came late, with the late entre. They were pretty jammed that night, so I'll not throw them under the bus for it. Maybe it's a little bit spendy, but they had no problem accommodating two diners who are lactose intolerant. Portions are right. Not overkill, but about what you would need if you had an appetizer, salad, entree and maybe dessert. We'll be back!

The Middle East at West Portal

By joe s |

We have traveled extensively in the Middle East including Beirut, Istanbul, Cairo, and Damascus. The mezzas here were superb and could be a meal in themselves. The service was upbeat, positive, and friendly. The prices were moderate for San Francisco. This restaurant will be a regular for us on our trips to SF.

Always good

By Brian Groth |

The falafel salad is my go-to and is always a good vegetarian option, but friends certainly like the chicken kabobs.

Below average

By m-sfca |

Overpriced and not worth the cost. The lentil soup was the best part of the meal. The Greek salad was bland and tasteless, it needed more dressing. The salmon was too small and overcooked, dry is the word. The service was good but the food was not. Skip this place as there are better restaurants in town.

Yum!!! Great Mediterranean food

By R v E |

My wife and I had our first San Francisco dinner here together. The atmosphere is amazing! The food was fantastic and the service very good. Prices are a bit on the high side, but worth it for the good food. I would definitely go back for more when in San Francisco.

Bursa has very tasty dishes on a short but well-priced menu. Don't miss the lentil soup, from the owner's mom's recipe!

Great Restaurant

By Gratiaplacenti |

We visited Bursa for dinner tonight and we were welcomed with such hospitality and attention. We waited for our table as the place was full but it didn't take long to be seated. Their staff was very attentive and answered our questions promptly. We ordered Mercimek Kofte and it was very well prepared, full of flavor. We also ordered Adana Kebab and Lamb Kebab, which were extremely delicious, came in a large plate which made it very good value. I will visit again for my next time in SF.

Wonderful food. Great presentation.

By Nancy D |

What could be better than yummy food in a neighborhood where you can find parking? Restaurant receives an A. Only hiccup was we had to ask waitress for pita three times. By the time it arrived our appetizer spreads were 80% eaten. They were so delicious, the bread wasn't needed to enjoy them. (% the bread was good too!)

My favorite in West Portal

By Slow_food_for_me |

I have eaten at Bursa at least 20 times over the past few years. Their service is quick, they are consistently friendly, and their food is delicious. I usually go for lunch, since I work nearby. Typically I will get a wrap with salad. My favorites are the eggplant and falafel wraps with the salmon wrap a close third. I order them with the salad usually, but on occasion with the fries when the craving is upon me. A couple years ago their salad dressing was very tart - almost overpowering. I liked it, but they have toned it down and it is even better now. Their Greek salad is generous and flavorful the cranberries are an interesting addition. I ordered one last week and the women at the next table commented that it looked delicious. The only critique I have of it is the chips they serve on it, which appear to be fried pita. They are tasty, but they are a tad oily for my taste. Their appetizers are great - flavorful and generous, but not too big. I especially enjoy the Baba Ghanouj and Ezme Eggplant. Both are definitely worth the try. I have also introduced several friends to Bursa. All have enjoyed the service and food. After a couple of visits you'll be like an old friend to the help.

Charming restaurant, delicious food, good West Portal choice

By Sharon D |

This is a charming resturant in the West Portal neighborhood. Parking can be challenging but not as difficult as some other neighborhoods in SF. Service was attentive and prompt. It was busy at lunchtime but not crowded. Had lunch and the Kofte wrap was generously sized, in fact my friend ended up taking half of her grilled eggplant wrap home for lunch the next day. Prices are reasonable for the area and for sit down service. Also shared a baba ganoush (garlic eggplant) appetizer and the pita that came with it was so fresh and soft. This is what Pita is supposed to be. Will have to come by for dinner but very recommended for lunch.

Friendly restaurant with well prepared dishes

Pleasant setting with responsive convenient service and good selection of dishes of ample proportions.

Excellent food and service, reasonable price

Our latest visit was with friends. We live in a town just south of San Francisco and have come into the City to this restaurant a number of times ever since Bursa opened. The food and service have consistently been of the highest quality The Turkish dishes are delicious, the kebabs savory, and the side dishes that come with it generous. For instance, the kebabs come with rice and a small salad. The starters are interesting, some standard Mediterranean standbys and some Turkish additions. For a table of four, the combination platter works just fine. For four of us, the tab was $125, which for San Francisco is not excessive (included wine and beer, but without the tip). If you're a visitor to San Francisco, this brings you into a nice neighborhood away from tourist areas.

Great food

American food isn't great so this was a real treat on our trip. Great food and fast service. Very good with kids. The only thing I would have to give out about is that it was raining the day we were there and the floor was very slippy, a warning would have been nice when we came in the door.

Open again for lunch on weekends and with great $8.00 menu items!!

Went to the West Portal neighboorhood yesterday and was pleasantly surprised to see Bursa had just opened for lunch again! The place was fairly full but we got a table for 3 right away. Ordered 2 appetizers, the "Cigar" (feta cheese wrapped in filo dough and deep fried) and the Baba Ganoush (vegetarian eggplant dish similar in consistancy to hummus). The Baba came with this thin pita type bread which was fantastic and warm and the Baba itself had a great char cooked flavor but not overdone. it was so good, I could have just had another serving of that for my whole meal! The $8. lunch menu was quite extensive offering several options for salads, wraps and kebabs. You can order off their full menu at any time if you want to, but with all the choices for lunch and at the $8 price, you can't beat it. We all ordered a different wrap - the falafal, the citrus chicken and the eggplant. Each one came with your choice of fries or a salad. The wraps were excellent! I had the chicken one which had a great citrus/pesto type of sauce and wrapped in their thin warm bread again which was just delicious. My family also enjoyed their wraps. The side salad that came with the wrap was made of field greens with a very light olive oil/lemon dressing. We were so full that we didn't have enough room for desert, but will be sure to save room for that next time, hopefully next weekend!!

You Need to Try the Beef Stroganoff Here

By RuRuRoams |

The things I love about this restaurant surprise me. They have a shrimp and feta appetizer that is delicious and their rice - regardless of what it comes with - is somehow better than rice anywhere else. But the big surprise and the dish that I find myself craving is, oddly, a Beef Stroganoff they serve. Beef Stroganoff and what is, ostensibly, a Lebanese/Mediterranean restaurant. It's made with pickles (I know!) and is served with that heavenly rice. There are no illusions about it being "good for me" so I limit my visits. But, if you're in or near West Portal, it's worth a visit just for that dish. Trust me.

Not really out of the way

Bursa is located in West Portal, a small neighborhood center far from downtown that is known and loved by natives. However, it is less than a block from the Muni K, L, and M lines, so even if you are visiting San Francisco and staying downtown, all you have to do is walk to Market Street and go underground to the westbound Muni Lines. Bursa is really two related meal experiences; lunch is quite different than dinner. At lunch, for less than ten dollars, you will have a choice from several menu items (hint: anything lamb is delicious!) served with rice and salad. For dinner, there are many more Mediterranean influenced choices, at higher but still reasonable charges, especially considering the large servings. There are also many Mezzes, if you are inclined to eat more lightly. I'm still partial to the lamb, especially on skewers, but still pink and juicy. An appetizer of dolmades is perfect as well. There are dessert items, but I have rarely had room to try any. The servings are generous, the wine list is not very long but contains local gems, and the owner is almost always there making sure that all is well. Once, my sister's dish was very salty. We mentioned it and the owner came over immediately, agreed, and offered us another entree of our choice. He also provided dessert at no charge but we has to ask for it to go.

Very good, close to Falafel quality from Middle East

Came here based on recommendation of friend who I was visiting who lives nearby. Very good falafel that is damn close to what I've had in the Middle East!

Rich's Bursa Review

This is a great restaurant. I had Beyta. It was delicious and filling. I also had Falalfel an excellent appetizer. The location is very convenient. The service is outstanding, friendly and smiling. This is my second time eating at Bursa

Good food

We’ve been coming here for years with family, friends and co-workers. I really like their rack of lamb $30 and beef stroganoff. The chicken stroganoff is okay but sort of weird with chopped pickles on top. Comes with rice pilaf and a small green salad. The falafel salad isn’t bad but not enough falafels. Hubby and kids also like their kebab. Their complimentary bread is nice and soft and comes with olive oil and mixed spices for dipping. A nice neighborhood restaurant and staff are always nice. No reservations.

Surprisingly Good Find in the Neighborhood

It's been my experience that many of the West Portal Avenue dining choices have not been very authentic, seeming to cater to the blander palate of white Americans (and I am one of them) who perhaps have not traveled to any of those countries (but I have), and do not have an informed opinion about how dishes "should" taste. I was pleasantly surprised when my friend and I walked into Bursa without a reservation, were promptly seated, and experienced not only some very well-prepared dishes, but exceptional service as well. I should mention that although we had no problem getting a table at about 6 PM, the place quickly filled up, and by the time we had finished, there was a queue outside. We ordered the appetizer combo, which was delightful and quite filling. The breads, as mentioned by other reviewers, were warm and fresh. My friend had the beef stroganoff, which had a very nice sauce. It was inexplicably covered with pickles, which gave it a certain piquancy, but detracted from the overall presentation due to the odd color. It came with a clever pyramid of almond rice and a side salad. I had the moussaka, which was colorful, plentiful, and served in a hot cazuela dish. We ordered one of their One Hope wine selections, of which 50% of the proceeds is donated to a specific charities. The Zin was light, crisp and fruit-forward, and at $30, not much of a mark-up! It was presented with a yellow plastic wrist band. We had port for dessert, and split an order of baklava. Table service was attentive, timely, and exactly as it should be. I'll definitely go back and check out their new lunch menu as well.

Wonderful food, great service

Staying at a place nearby out of several restaurants in this neighborhood Bursa was by far our best experience. Having travelled extensively in Turkey we can confirm that here they serve you authentic , delicious Turkish food and with a service to match - attentive, friendly -these people like what they do and take pride in what they serve - and it shows. I wish I had a restaurant like Bursa in my neighborhood!

Fresh and Delicious

Bursa is in the West Portal neighborhood, a street with 1930's era buildings and shops, intersected by a streetcar line. My companion and I visited Bursa midafternoon. It is bright, clean place, very comfortable. My $8 salmon wrap was simply delicious -- fresh, quality salmon, a large portion served on two wrap halves. I am a big eater but could not finish it all right then. The salad side was a small mountain of visually and tastefully fresh assorted greens. My friend enjoyed succulent grape leaves which were larger than one finds elsewhere. We split a bottle of wine -- $32 for Hess chardonnay, a real bargain. Yep, I couldn't finish the wrap but we did manage to down the wine. :-) For San Francisco, this place is a bargain. Across the street is the Goodwill Boutique where Goodwill sells designer label donations. A number of other shops make Bursa the perfect place for a half day of nosing around shopping and relaxing over delicious food.

Exorbitant Fee for item change

By Gerald J |

I was a fairly regular viistor to Bursa but have not been back since this occured. On a recent visit I asked to change the greens from mixed to arugla, which they use on one salad vs another and was told the fee to make this change was $2.00. The whole salad only cost something like 7.00 and they have nothing written on their menu that there is a fee for making changes to dishes. There are 3 employees in the kitchen it's not like its a Fancy Restaurant and it would take an Executive Chef to make a decision that is going to mess up the line. They are already using the greens for other salads, what is the big deal to put one kind vs another? It's sad when a single location alienates it's customer base. I have always like this restaurant and reccommended it to many people but have also now told people to beware of this over charge on something that should have been no problem. You can go into any restaurant and say you are Gluten Free and they will change the dish for you, but to charge a cusomer to change the greens!! Crazy.

Nice neighborhood restaurant with an array of spice and flavor!

Great wine list. The combination platter appetizers was a nice portion. There is chicken, lamb, beef fixed a variety of ways. The aroma of spices taste great. The Naan bread is freshly made and delicious! I will be back!
